Genesis sees higher profits in ’10

AFTER having taken over in April the management of the luxury playground Misibis Bay Resort on Cagraray Island and Hotel Venezia in Legaspi City, hospitality-management firm Genesis Hotels & Resorts Corp. (GHRC) sees higher profits this year, with more establishments coming under its wing. The firm has 14 properties under its management and is setting its sights on expanding to Hainan, China.

Both properties, which are owned by the Sunwest Group, are in Albay. GHRC is an enterprise of recently retired Philamlife president Jose L. Cuisia and Richard L. Lee, president of Universal Motors Corp. It already manages Sunwest’s hotel in downtown Legazpi called Hotel St. Ellis. In an interview, company president Miguel G. Cerqueda said he projects a “15-percent increase” in their net income from 2009, with the summerseason having boosted the revenues of many of its managed properties. Aside from this, he said the diversification of the firm into allied industries such as laundry, telemarketing and information technology (IT) has helped pushed up the bottom line, but declined to give specific figures.

Company subsidiaries handling these allied operations service not only the parent firm’s managed properties but also that of other hospitality establishments in the country, such as the laundry needs of deluxe hotels and fine-dining restaurants. It also markets the privilege/discount cards of major hotels.

Its IT subsidiary Fiesta Pacific Inc. sells hotel management software, a “cost-effective, one-stop solution to fit the various needs of hotels,” helping other hospitality establishments organize their reservations systems, accounting, points of sale, etc.

“For a 10-year-old firm, we’re doing extremely well,” said Cerqueda. GHRC investors include prominent local businessmen and personalities such as Perry Uy, Paulo Campos Jr., Simeon Yeo, Carlos Ortoll and Pablo Garcia, currently the board chairman.

The firm will actively promote Legazpi City as a “convention city,” with the completion of several conference facilities such as that of the Hotel Venezia that can accommodate 500 persons. Hotel St. Ellis, on the other hand, had converted an old movie house into a theater that can function as a mini-convention hall.

Cerqueda said that for Misibis Bay Resort and Venezia, his task is to enhance the offerings of these establishments and improve their profitability “without sacrificing amenities which have made both properties distinct from other establishments.”

He added it will continue the resort’s subscription in the prestigious Small Luxury Hotels of the World brand, a listing of the 500 best small luxury hotels in over 50 countries. The firm also manages another high-end resort, Bellarocca Island Resort & Spa, in Marinduque.

Aside from the takeover of the Bicol properties, GHRC recently launched Astoria Boracay (formerly Boracay Gold Crowne Resort) in Aklan; the Antel Spa Suites Hotel on Makati Avenue; Las Casas Filipinas de Acuzar, a heritage destination in Bataan owned by New San Jose Builders chairman Jose Acuzar; and One Tagaytay Place Hotel Suites in Tagaytay City.

They will launch the Toccare Spa within the Antel Spa Suites in July, operated by the owners of The Olympia Spa in Makati City, and open the Hotel Ciriaco in Calbayog, Samar, on July 28.  In July the firm will “soft-open” the Midas Hotel and Casino.

Wag ka lang mainggit who knows pagnaging sucessful sa Calbayog ang Hotel na yan baka sa Catarman naman. Alam nyo naman ang Calbayog at Catarman ay parang twin sisters. Pag meron yung isa di nag tatagal nagkakaroon din yung isa. FYI yung may ari ng Ceriaco ay may ari din ng Cenimar na marami din ang investments sa Catarman. It is a town roughly 15 km north of Borongan. The road that leads to the unused airport marks the midpoint when travelling from Borongan. Quaint scenes along the way, and it is admirable how the rivers are kept pristine, with the mangrove swamps that are the nurseries for the fishes green, lovely and productive still. But most of Samar's rivers are in this condition. One can only hope they will stay that way.

catar taga calbayog city samar ak..saan ba itong san antonio? maganda itong lugar puntahan?

One of the island towns of Northern Samar located between Capul island and western part of N. Samar. Sa Victoria ka sasakay ng motorboat in 15 mins. Maraming taga Calbayog ang nagpupunta roon. Kadalasan mga seminars and conferences ng mga govt offices doon nila ginagawa.

I've heard that the Uy Famiy, one of the wealthiest businessmen in Catarman and the owner of U Petron, Tsiban Bar and several buildings for rent, will construct a 40-room hotel in Bankerohan just accross the bridge and opposite Tsiban bar. Just dont know the type or class of the would-be hotel.

^^Wow, nakakataba naman ng puso. Ako, my heart belongs to Region 8 kaya kahit saan ako mapadpad basta Leyte-Samar at home ako. In fairness bay mas bustling ang Calbayog kesa Ormoc siguro dahil mas malaki ang land area at population nyo. Mas malapad mga kalye n'yo, mas neat ang bricked sidewalks at mas maganda mga decorative lampposts n'yo. :cheers:

About Monterey naman, ewan ko kung matatawag bang branches dito. May isang main sa tapat ng Centrum, may isa sa loob ng Gaisano at isa sa loob ng Yuvallo's Hypermart. :)

A few more pics of Lilliputan. You need to wear sandals if you want to enjoy the clear waters here; otherwise the rocky bottom will get you. Good for snorkeling. Samar still has unspoiled beaches, virgin forests and unpolluted air that are gone in most parts of the country. How much lucky are they, envied by visitors from other provinces for the richness of their nature's endowment. We always hear people say that Palawan is the country's last frontier, but Samar has a strong case for claiming second.

At low tide, individuals of the species Homo sapiens sapiens gather seashells. In the foreground are members of the Chordate Aves having their fill too. One luxuriant environment serving as an ecological niche to different creatures. The richness and bounty of the waters seems incongruous to the fact that this is a popular place for swimming for the locals!

But do the Samarenos have it in them the courage and vision to preserve and protect the environment? Already In this resort I see flotsam that were very clearly thrown by patrons. And while travelling to Tacloban at night, in the far distant the crimson telltale signs of slash and burn agriculture sear the sky, and sear the soul as well.

A few more pics of Lilliputan. You need to wear sandals if you want to enjoy the clear waters here; otherwise the rocky bottom will get you. Good for snorkeling. Samar still has unspoiled beaches, virgin forests and unpolluted air that are gone in most parts of the country. How much lucky are they, envied by visitors from other provinces for the richness of their nature's endowment. We always hear people say that Palawan is the country's last frontier, but Samar has a strong case for claiming second.

Yes if you may realize, Catarman has three (3) sub-urban centers: Downtown area the commercial hub with more or less 15 Barangays; Dalakit area the seat of the Provincial government with more or less 10,000 inhabitants the biggest in the province in terms of land area and population, and UEP-Cawayan area with a combined population of around 10,000 excluding the students.

I dont have any updates about that. But, i think apektado yan kasi that would be the future site of Gaisano which is the old public market. Nweiz, lets wait and see na lang muna. Try ko pag uwi ko this July kung may masagap me na update.

Update sa Gaisano, they were in Calbayog daw last Tuesday according to my source. They surveyed the site na and they are just waiting for the new public market to be finished so that they can start the construction. Lets keep our fingers crossed na wala nang political interventions na mangyayari that will keep them away or delay their plans.

Successful naman yung concert. Puno yung venue at masaya at d parin kumukupas ang boses ni Marco Sison. Namismeraize nga GF ko nag kiss pa nag selos na nga ako he he he, joke. . . yung susunod nilang invited guests sina Hajji A, Nonoy Zunega, Rey Valera at Rico J of course in separate occasions.

Oh my Gosh!! I was really nervous this morning when our Cebu Pacific flight from Manila which took off at 610 am bound for Calbayog, returned to Manila and landed at NAIA due to some aircraft problem according to the pilot. Maupay na la we landed safely.

An hour after we boarded again the same aircraft and maupay nala liwat we landed safely in Calbayog. But, everytime nga nag shake an plane grabe akon nerbiyos.:)

@catar city: Malapit na ang fiesta ng Catarman. May idea ka na ba kung anu-ano ang mga activities? Parang tahimik pa kasi. Siguro dahil transition pa ng local government. They used to hold yung Rayhak festival although I think di pa yun considered na festival ng Department of Tourism. Pwede bang kung may mabalitaan ka tungkol sa activities ay paki-pm na lang ako? Or pwede rin naman po dito mismo sa forum. Medyo nasa malayo lang kasi ako sa ngayon at di ko naman makontak ang munisipyo ng Catarman. Salamat!

Dogs to search for cocaine bricks in Samar

Fully-trained police dogs will be sent to Samar to help recover cocaine bricks that are part of the two tons of illegal drugs dumped by a drug syndicate last year.

On Thursday, Director General Jesus Verzosa, chief of the Philippine National Police (PNP), ordered the deployment of K-9 units to Samar and nearby areas to help recover cocaine bricks.

More or less 470 kilos of cocaine, with a street value of P2.3 billion, have been recovered since news about the dumping of roughly two tons of the illegal drugs was reported in December last year.

“The deployment of K-9 units will be a big help in recovering the remaining cocaine," said Verzosa.

He urged local residents not to sell any illegal drugs they might recover. “They should not sell them because if they are arrested, the case that would be filed against them is non-bailable," he explained.

On Wednesday, a certain Adelina Pidlaw turned over some two kilos of cocaine bricks to the local police in Dolores, Eastern Samar.

Last month, five Samar residents landed in jail after they were caught with 33 kilos of cocaine bricks in a series of buy-bust operations in Borongan and nearby areas.

A report from the Anti-Illegal Drugs Special Operations Task Force (AID-SOTF) alleged that some residents have been selling the cocaine for P40,000 per kilo.

The same report revealed that some of the cocaine bricks have already reached Metro Manila and nearby areas.

Earlier, a police sergeant was collared for selling cocaine bricks in Pasig City while a couple was apprehended for selling two kilos of cocaine in Bacoor, Cavite.

In December last year, a report from the United States revealed that some two tons of cocaine from South America en route to Hongkong were dumped off Samar province when the transporters sensed that the contrabands have already been compromised.

Police anti-narcotics agents believe that many cocaine bricks have been recovered by local residents but most of them opted not to report these incidents to the police, with the intention of selling the illegal drugs. – VVP, GMANews.TV

Nice shots. Cegurado ka bang nag tail sa parade? nag tail din kasi ako sakay ng aking motorsiklo. Kasi nung nasa may Park n Go nako galing downtown hinarang ako ng traffic police dahil kasalubong ko ang parade so kumanan ako papuntang Capitol road kala ko makalusot papunta sa bahay namin. So sumonod na lang ako sa parade hanggang makaikot sila. baka ikaw pa ang nakatabi ko noon habang nakatail ng parade. Sayang kung sinabi mo lang sakin na mag aatend ka ng fiesta sa Dalakit na invite sana kita he he he.

Guiuan, one of the oldest urban centers in Samar Island. Sabi ng Lolo ko, Nung nandyan pa ang mga kano pumupunta sila ng Guiuan from Lapinig gamit ang maliit na bankang de sagwan at walang makina. Ilang araw daw nila binabaybay ang karagatan sa kahabaan ng Eastern Samar.

Guiuan may not ring a bell for some..however, it sets significant events in history. In 1521, Ferdinand Magellan first set foot on Philippine soil in Homonhon on his way to discover the Philippines.

During WWII..the American Forces used Guiuan as a supply depot, the air strip, piers, bunkers from the war are still visible nowadays..in fact, US Navy cadets just made Guiuan a part of their educational tour...

i don't think that fact is an intriga. i guess its because Catbalogan is after all the former capital of Samar , AS IN ENTIRE ISLAND OF SAMAR WHEN IT WAS NOT YET DIVIDED INTO 3 PROVINCES. unlike Calbayog na CHARTERED CITY lang, and would Not have passed the normal requirements of becoming a city kung hindi nga lang nagkaron ng special law para maging city.

also, a city/place could go into recession but it could rise up once again and redevelop. so for me, Catbalogan is Catbalogan and Calbayog is Calbayog. bahala na kayo to interpret it the way you want to.:lol:

SUSTAINABILITY which is the most important. Urban planning may also be added (infrastucture etc.). Accessibility by all modes of transportation (land, sea and air)

@BOBLUZ, i went home last week sa Calbayog bakit close pa rin ang Royalist Bar and Resto, akala ko nag opening na sila.

Hindi yan sa Catarman, ss Las Navas church yan bagong painted nga yan eh. Sadyang ganyan lang ang kulay gray kasi ang napili nilang kulay. Maganda sin sa loob ng church.
