Plane turns back as passenger complains of chest pain

ANN - Saturday, December 25
Manila (Philippine Daily Inquirer/ANN) - A female passenger who complained of chest pains in midair forced a Zest Air flight en route to Catarman in Northern Samar, Philippines, to turn back to the Manila domestic airport on Friday morning.

Zest Air flight Z2290 had just left the airport at a little past 10 am when the passenger, identified as Consorcia Balando, complained of having pains in her chest, according to the media affairs division of the Manila International Airport Authority.

Captain Al Carloto immediately decided to turn the plane back upon learning of the woman's complaint, and radioed the Manila Control Tower to seek priority landing at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport runway.

He also requested that a medical crew be on standby at the tarmac to give the passenger immediate medical attention, officials said.

The passenger was given first aid by a crew member until the plane landed safely at around 10:48 a.m. A team from the NAIA Emergency Medical Services rushed the passenger to the San Juan de Dios Hospital in Pasay City for treatment.

Maybe you are referring to Catarman River. Other bigger rivers are Mondragon, San Roque, Pambujan going to Silvino Lobos, Victoria, Gamay and of Course Laoang going to Catubig-Las Navas, the biggest and longest in the province I think.

Thanks anyway for appreciating our province's nature. Tama ka, the rivers not only in our province should be preserved for long. If you may not have noticed there is an island inside the Catarman River just in front of the town proper. the island is constantly expanding that it may seem too good to be habitable. I believe that the expansion is being caused by siltation brought about by soil erosion from nearby river banks. I'm afraid of its long term effects it might block the natural flow of water hence may cause flooding to the town specially during typhoons and rainy season and nobody it seems is anticipating its adverse affects. The new Mayor anyway plans the island to be part of the Catarman River tourism development.

Bakit mo naman nilagyan ng Catarman? hindi naman sa Catarman ito. Catarman has 2 existing diversion roads and an additional one is being proposed:
1. Dalakit-Molave (bypassing Brgy Dalakit and runway from Allen)
2. Balud-Bankerohan (bypassing the town proper from Laoang}
3. Bankerohan-Dona Lucia, Mondragon ( to bypass UEP to decongest the university during peak hours)

The existing diversion roads are much wider than those shown in your pics. and there are sidewalks being constructed. These two diversion roads make some visitors think that Catarman look bigger in area than Catbalogan and Calbayog, at least from the point of view of my office-mates from Tacloban.

i passed by a lot of bridges going to the Catubig-Las Navas area. I don't see as many as those wide rivers in Cebu... even wider than Loboc in Bohol, i think.

Ah I see! FYI the Catubig River has many tributaries. One of the most famous is the Pinipisakan Falls in Brgy San Isidro, Las Navas at the end of the main river near the boundary with E. Samar, hope you've been there.

Hirap kaya ng roads doon... sana pagawan na ng roads..

Hindi na ganung kahirap ngayon malaki na ang pinagbago ng highway doon. . . though not yet completed the highway is about 30% concreted.

During my visit to Lapinig last September 2010, I was a bit shock when I saw a brand new Hi-Ace at Pangpang Port lining up for the Palapag-Lapinig route. We were told that there are 3 units of this kind plying the route.

re: Pinpisakan Falls... I was not able to visit the place due time constraints but I will go there hopefully next year... i saw a pic of the falls and it is pretty...

Tama ka specially those from Catubig, Las Navas and Palapag. Generally people from that area are known to have fairer skin than their counterparts from anywhere else in the province. Mas nauna kasi sila naabot ng mga Kastela (Galleon trade).

It's very low passenger load for a 76-seater Q400 aircraft.
I'm not sure if it's only for that day. It's not only for Catarman, as I also noticed the Cebu to Cagayan de Oro has also very few passengers.
It might be because of only few people travels during new year's day..

US-based Deep Ocean Power to diversify business in Phl

MANILA, Philippines - US-based Deep Ocean Power Inc. (DOPI), one of the world’s largest producers of ocean power, plans to diversify its power venture in the Philippines, a top company official said.

Through its local unit Deep Ocean Philippines Inc., the company is targeting to put up several wind and solar power plants in 36 sites all over the country.

DOPI vice president Jonathan Wong said they are looking at developing between 10 to 300 megawatts of power capacity in each site, depending on the company’s evaluation for each location.

“Each site will be used not only for OTEC (ocean thermal energy conversion) but for on-shore and off-shore wind farms and solar energy as well, if it is determined they are suitable for such technology,” Wong said.

OTEC makes use of the temperature differential between the warm surface waters of the oceans, heated by solar radiation, and the deeper cold waters to generate electricity.

He said DOPI is ready to operate its first plant in the Philippines but declined to give further details on the project.

“The company is in the process of finalizing the implementation of the first power plant, hopefully by the middle of this year,” he said.

DOPI has been awarded service contracts by the Department of Energy (DOE) to explore 36 sites covering 910 prospective blocks or 73,710 hectares in Ilocos Norte, La Union, Pangasinan, Zambales, Occidental Mindoro, Isabela, Aurora, Masbate, Antique, Negros Occidental, Negros Oriental, Zamboanga del Norte, Maguindanao, Sultan Kudarat, Sarangani, Misamis Oriental, Surigao del Norte, Davao Oriental, Davao del Sur, Sulu, Southern Leyte, Northern Samar, Eastern Samar, Ilocos Sur, Sorsogon and Albay.

Earlier, local DOPI chairman Alberto David said they are eyeing between 10 to 20 MW of ocean power in Panay and Mindoro.

“There are possibilities in those areas. So after three years of studying for the ocean energy service contract, we narrowed it down into two-one in the island of Mindoro and one in the island of Panay,” David said.

The project cost, David said, would likely reach about $2.5 million per MW as the facility will be base-load, which means it would run on a 24-hour basis.

My trip from CEBU to CATARMAN - January 1, 2011
We're only 18 passengers on that flight.
It's very low passenger load for a 76-seater Q400 aircraft.
I'm not sure if it's only for that day. It's not only for Catarman, as I also noticed the Cebu to Cagayan de Oro has also very few passengers.
It might be because of only few people travels during new year's day..
i rode 2P MNL-Cebu-CRM last Oct.26, and from Cebu to Catarman leg, more than 20 lang din kami.

Kung lucrative nga ang Ormoc-Manila route bakit naman tatangalin ng airline ang ruta nila doon? baka nga nagkakaroon din ng tumal sa pasehero ang ruta na yan kasi malapit lang ang Ormoc sa Tacloban. Am sure na maraming passengers din ang na prefer ng malalaking aircraft. At saka hindi decision ng provincial managers ang pag tatangal ng ruta decision yan ng company sa pamamagitan ng kanilang Board of Directors.

Actually 90% filled ang Airphil most of their two-year stint sa Ormoc. Naging matumal nung napadalas ang cancellation ng flights. Kasi dito sa Ormoc ang pinu-pullout nila pag nagkakadeperensya ang aircrafts nila sa ibang lugar. Natural matu-turn off ang mga pasahero sa ibang lugar at di na uulit.

Hirit pa nila poor visibility daw dahil walang runway lights airport dito. E ba't di na lang nila ilipat ang sked sa umaga? :bash:

I experienced that last Oct. 11, 2010 na byahe namin pauwi ng Ormoc. Nagkaaberya yung papuntang Busuanga ata yun at lilipad sana kami ng 12:50 noon hayon hindi natuloy kasi ginamit pa-Busuanga yung aircraft namin sabi ng airphil staff. Na-delayed kami ng almost 5 hours kaya hayon sa Tacloban na denivert yung flight madilim na kasi hindi na makapagland sa Ormoc Airport. Almost full yung flight namin that time. :ohno:

Yung sked ng Airphil Express dito sa Ormoc ang problem hindi pasahero based on my observation at makakaturn-off parati nalang delayed yung flight nila or sometimes diverted pa. Sana ginawa nalang nilang umaga yung flight dito alam naman nilang walang landing lights ang airport sa Ormoc. I hope babalik sila dito or another airline will serve Ormoc. :)

Calbayog Airport Dosen't Have Runway lights. Tacloban Airport Has Runway Lights.

don't compare tacloban city airport to calbayog airport because tacloban is in leyte which is one of premiere city in the philippines while calbayog city is just like a 1st class municipality although it is a city,then samarenos are more passive than leyteno, although were all WARAY but there more cebuano-bisaya which is progressive personality, look at cebu city,lapu-lapu,mandaue,dumaguete,bacolod,etc.. there more intuitive for growth with infrastructure and tourism. look at samar bounty of beauty more than any place in the philippines but still slow progress and the 3rd largest island in the philippines with one city, luzon has more than 50, mindanao 20, negros 17 cebu 4-5
, and sorry to us because borongan and catbalogan is a capital town.

^^If you back read the posts, there's no one comparing Tacloban airport to Calbayog Airport... yeah, we all know that Samar provinces belongs to the poorest provinces in the country.. but that's not the problem of the people who live there. it's the problem of its leaders and the national government why we are like this right now..they need to educate our people and train/fund them for livelihood.
One of the issues why some investors do not put businesses in our place because of insurgency (ang dami sating NPA)...palaging brownout din satin.
But I'm still optimistic that our time of progress is coming these years.. Unti-unti na nating napapansin yan ngayon... Wag lang masyadong negative.. let's just hope and pray na magagawa ng mga leaders natin ang kanilang mga tungkulin sa bayan.:cheers:

Ano bang kaguluhan dito mga kaforums? Its relentless rain here in Northern Samar particularly Catarman. more than 24 hrs straight of not so hard but continues rain. Some parts of Catarman are already flooded. All flights were cancelled. I dont know for the rest of Eastern Visayas if the same weather condition. I expect local leaders to declare state of calamity during the next business day.

Nasa Access Road ang bus terminal in between Catarman Public Market and Balud-Bangkerohan Diversion Road. Am sure na mas magiging mas maganda ang Calbayog Bus Terminal, kasi mas malaking budget at mas maganda ang plano pang city na kasi. Pero ok na rin para sakin ang Bus Terminal na to for a Capital Town like Catarman. It's an all-purpose and has wide and sufficient space for all vehicles around.

^^ i believe wala namang may nagsabi na hindi feasible ung airport sa Ormoc.. :)

Regulated naman yata ang rate at hindi lang based on the whims of the airport admin. Hindi magkakapareho ang rate kasi hindi naman po lahat ng airport ay pare-pareho ang classification.

Salamat sa Diyos at tumigil na ang ulan. Sumikat na rin kunti si haring Araw. Kaya lang bad news for travelers to Tacloban via Lope De Vega. South road is not passable to 4-wheel vehicles due to land slide as posted by pthfinder. One meter na lang ang natira sa portion ng highway na yan and only a motorcycle can pass the area.

you have a good point on the comparison bet Bicol and Samar. Let us accept the fact that the biggest market for all agricultural product is Metro Manila. due to proximity of Bicol to Metro Manila the farmers can easily sell their products at lesser cost. So the farmers are encouraged to plant just anything that can be sold in the market. At hindi lang yan mas malaki ang Kapatagan ng Bicol at mas malaki naman ang forest area ng Samar. Hindi rin totoo an mas marami ang NPA Bicol kay sa Samar. Di ba only lately ilang malalaking Campo ng NPA between Northern Samar, Eastern Samar and Western Samar provinces ang natunton ng militar? meron pa nga silang natagpu-an na Hospital for their comrades. na shock pa nga ang militar dito

This is South Road going to Calbayog via Lope de Vega. Buses Jeepneys and Vans like Grand Tours, Turbanada should now travel via Allen

^^Sana maayos kaagad ang highway na yan..kasi pag matagalan ang pag-ayos nyan mahirapan masyado ang mga pasahero na gustong pumunta ng Catarman to/from Calbayog pag mag-via Allen sila.parang balik sa dati, magiging 3 hours na instead of 1 hour lng hehe.

Mukhang malambot talaga ang pinatungan ng highway na yan.. wala man lang bato.

3. No Spamming. Do not deliberately create repetitive posts or threads in the same forum. You may do so in 2 separate forums, at the moderator's discretion and as long as it is within the forum's content.

4. No Advertising. No creating threads or multiple posts of any kind about your own site, a product you sell, a group you belong to etc, without prior approval of the site Administration. You will not advertise or solicit other members to buy, sell or peruse any products or services through this discussion forum. Chain letters and junk mail are strictly prohibited. Doing so will likely result in a ban.

5. Respect Privacy. You will not violate a person's privacy by publishing information that could be considered private and personal without first having obtained that person's permission.

6. No foul language in any portion of a user's title, signature, location, etc.

7. Thread titles should be uniform, kept short, simple and concise. As has been noticed, it seems that thread titles are now being unnecessarily used to serve as status symbols.

8. Bumping of threads (outside Samahan) will strictly be monitored and should consist of a post with "substance" or something that could add value to the thread. It has been noticed that even if the thread has been idle just for a few minutes/hours, members who have "nothing-better-to-do" will bump them to the top just to keep the pace of the thread quick. It seems that there is a competition with the thread numbers. Remember that looks at quality over quantity. Consistent commission of this will result to a "Reset" of the thread number.

9. In an effort to become more reader friendly, SMS typing will not be allowed. Proper capitalization is also encouraged. Something like "WeLcoMe to EverYonE!" isn't pleasant and refreshing to the eyes. Violators would be given their appropriate sanctions.

Please remember, this site exists first and foremost for members to discuss and share information about the world's skyscrapers, cities and urban environments. Everything that falls outside the scope of this is secondary. SSC is an online community, and just like in real life, everyone has to be responsible for their conduct. The staff have dedicated themselves to making this a pleasant and conducive environment for our members, and only ask that our members play their part to keep this place harmonious and successful.

***Discipline and Moderation. All SSC staffers have carte blanche authority with regards to discipline and moderating the threads in their forum. However, the following denote our intended procedures:

When encountered, we will generally lock an offending thread or delete offending content and may choose to PM the forumer(s) involved with a warning/explanation. Addditional problems can result in a Brigging from SSC for up to two weeks (during this time, a person can only view the forums and cannot post or vote). Further disciplinary problems will likely result in a forumer either being banned from SSC permanently. Brigged forumers are not to re-register another account while brigged. If caught, all accounts will be banned. Likewise for forumers who register multiple accounts to vote in polls etc.

Buti nalang, Samar is the only island in the entire country that is geographically aligned with luzon and mindanao. If we look at the Philippine map, parang naging tulay ang isla ng samar sa isla ng luzon at mindanao, this, samar can capitalize on.

I have no doubt that Samar will be successful ang progressive in the future, it's only a matter of time mga kaibigan.

Thanks for the kind words for Samar. Pero sakin Ok lang naman kung anong situation meron kami dito sa Catarman. Hindi ko naman minamadali na maging highly urbanize kaagad ang lugar namin. Mas gusto ko nga yung ganito. Dito ko nalalasap yung urban living na may pagka rural din. Simple living. Walang traffic jam, walang pollution, fresh air, fresh foods (sea-foods). You can move from one place to another with just a motorbike without encountering any traffic jam and you can park just in any appropriate place. You can go to work within few minutes. During week-ends You can go and relax in any of the available resorts in town within few minutes. I could have opted to work in Manila because I studied there but I preferred to stay for good in a semi rural/urban place here in Catarman.

Hindi naman binaha yung buong downtown, yung ibang part lang ng Bay-bay 1, kasi katabi ng Lo-om River, at tsaka yung Brgy. Taboc, yung sa other side ng Lo-om River. Yung pangatlong River sa Borongan ay yung sa Can-abong, which separates Brgy. Bato and Can-abong.

Yung tulay na nagcoconect sa Brgy. Bato ang Can-abong ay nasira yung sa may side ng Can-abong, motorcycle lang ang nakakadaan sa ngayon.

yung river sa left side not sure kung can-abong river ang pangalan. pero yun yung pangatlo at yun ang nasira ang tulay...maraming na-stranded/

Monica Sacay, 16, a native of Kananga, Leyte, continues to hold on to the chance to become the next singing sensation as the "Star Power" search brought down to five the remaining finalists during the first live telecast this year.

Monica is now being tagged in this singing search as the "Charming Biritera" together with other top five finalists: Angeline Quinto as the "Pop Belter" from City of Manila, K-La Rivera the "R&B Sweetheart" from Canada, Krissel Valdez the "Soulful Diva" from Davao and Akiko Solon the "Sweet & Sexy Siren" from Cebu.
Being a part of the Leyte Idol talent pool, Leyte Governor Jericho "Icot" Petilla has extended financial assistance to the rising star to boost her chances of becoming Sharon's Next Female Pop Superstar.

The governor said starting a career in showbusiness is no easy endeavor and needs a lot of personal expense to build up her own name.

"We would help our own talents in any way we can. We are proud Monica have made it this far proving that our local talents can really compete in the national scene and make it big," Petilla said.

It was learned that the governor himself has asked his employees in his private-owned businesses to vote for Leytes singing star to increase her chances to figure in the top four and reach the grand finals for the said search.

Meanwhile, according to Loloy Loreto, who manages the Leyte IDOL talent pool, this is one of those opportunities that the provincial singing search would like to provide to the local talents exposure in nationwide singing search, possibly pass the qualifying round and hopefully making it to the top.

"We are very happy and very proud shes doing good in the search. Landing in the Top 5 is already a big feat as it is. But if she wins the title, it would be very, very big honor indeed, not only for Monica but for the Leyte IDOL itself, the program where she started her dream as a singer," Loreto said.

to catar city sounds like catarman city (for future), i dont believe that youre from gamay,let's be honest from what place we're coming from, every pacific town residents of northern samar like laoang,palapag,mapanas,gamay and lapinig knows about the myth of araw city,this is ridiculous and funny story for those people who's not from east of northern samar(pacific towns).

Kay nakita ko an mga picture san Larik Falls, Tarangban Falls, ngan Bangun Falls and they're all in Barangay Tinaplacan. How far is the barangay from the town proper? Waray ba issue san security?

Speaking of burger. It seems that burger cafe/ burger stand business is thriving here in Catarman inspite of the presence of Jollibee. About 4 years ago, an enterprising guy from Calbayog who was a former employee (baker) of Park N Go - Catarman, put up a business called "JANN BURGER". Now I observe that the business has already expanded to 7 stations/branches in Metro-Catarman, 2 in UEP, 1 in Dalakit and 4 in downtown. Its rival "BURGER CAFE" which was established earlier than JANBURGER has maintained just 2 locationS 1 in downtown and 1 in UEP. Jann Burger has also expanded to Rawis, Laoang, Bobon and Lavezares. What a fortunate enterprising guy, am sure he will soon become a millionaire, "Pag may tyaga may linaga"

Lucky guy. Congrats sa kanya. Baka nga ngayon pa lang ay millionaire na siya eh ;) Napansin ko nga ang Janburger nung December. At 24 hours sila open! Or at least the one I saw just near San Lorenzo Ruiz school. Kasi pagkakatanda ko past midnight na kami dumaan tapos open pa rin.

@adriel: umaraw na rin dito sa Catarman mula pa kahapon. Nagresume na rin yong mga flights after almost 2 weeks na panay cancelled since Jan 2.

I Wish We could create a thread about gaisano calbayog (Just like some opening malls ex.SM MALL OF ASIA CEBU & ROBINSONS NRA CEBU.)
