SAMARCOCO is located in Brgy. Malajog, Calbayog City. They have their own port there where international ships regularly docks. Capacity wise this is the largest oil mill in Samar. What they have in Catarman is only a buying station of copra. This is their website http://samarcocoproducts.com.They also have a plant in Dipolog City and an office in Quezon City..

Wrong. SAMARCOCO-Catarman was not established as a mere buying station. It only stopped its oil mill operation because of the higher rates of electricty charged by NORSAMELCO than SAMELCO in Calbayog. Somebody told me that thier cost of electricity was higher in Catarman than in their Calbayog plant which was supposed to be the main plant. That's why their operation was reduced to being a buying station for the time being. But I do believe that their oil mill operation will comeback in due time. FYI COMI has also its own port in San Jose. It is a subsidiary of GLOBE COCO one of the biggest if not the biggest oil mill in the country. It has several subsidiaries/branches nationwide including one (1) in Tolosa Leyte,

By the way can you get pics of the new public market and bus terminal

I got a message from him today on facebook. He said he would talk to his boss and see about getting me in there to take pictures this next weekend (12th or 13th of March). I guess it's a bit more difficult to get inside than I thought. If I can't get inside, then I'll be sure to take pictures of the outside and surrounding area.
Did anyone find out anything about the mall? In Bagacay or not? I haven't heard anything confirming that it wasn't going to be here. I have a cousin that works in city hall, not sure which department though. I can ask her and see if she knows anything, but can't promise anything there.
:okay:

I was wondering why there are so many repeat pictures on here?
Seems all that does is take up space that could be used for something else.
Of course there could be a good reason for it too. I've never been involved with a website that had 'threads', so they are still a bit confusing to me, right now.

Samar guv turns down proposal to have EVRMC annex in Catbalogan (http://Samar guv turns down proposal to have EVRMC annex in Catbalogan)

TACLOBAN CITY- The proposal to have an annex hospital of the Eastern Visayas Regional Medical Center in Samar should first be consulted to her.
So says Governor Sharee Anne Tan-de los Santos when asked on the proposal of Representative Mel Senen Sarmiento to put up an annex hospital of the EVRMC on the province.

“He should have told the province first on his plan,” de los Santos said in a chance interview on Saturday here in Tacloban.

“Unfortunately he didn’t do it. We only learned about his proposal when it reached Congress that is why we have opposed his bill,” she added.

Sarmiento, a political opponent of the governor, has proposed that an EVRMC annex be constructed in Catbalogan City due to the alleged poor health services of the Samar Provincial Hospital mainly due to lack of medical supplies and staff.

The Samar solon also argued that with an EVRMC annex in the province, the people in the province who need medical assistance need not go to Tacloban where the EVRMC, the largest government-run hospital in the region, is located

“They should have informed us first with regards to his plan so that we can discuss with him or tell him if what our opinion on his proposed bill is,” de los Santos said.

She also revealed that even the Department of Health is not in agreement on the proposal of Sarmiento.

Having an EVRMC annex in Samar would only drain their financial resources further, de los Santos said, referring to the reason of the DOH why it also reportedly opposes on the plan.

“I don’t know why he made such action and why he wanted to pass the responsibility for the management of the hospital to the DOH,” the Samar governor added.

In earlier interview with Rep.Sarmiento, he explained that said proposal to make the CDH as an annex hospital of the EVRMC to serve patients from the first district of Samar to include those who are from Northern Samar.

Sarmiento added that he had also considered the long travel time that patients would need why he made the proposal. (ROEL AMAZONA)

^^ oh no?? bakit naman?? the proposal of Cong. Sarmiento is one way of declogging EVRMC :(

It seems. Catarman is the melting pot of the 24 municipalities in the province. Mison nga meron din taga ibang province like Masbate na nag in-migrate dito sa Catarman just to eke out a living.

My mom owns a shop in the public market and I just want to ask if the stall arrangement will still be the same, Can you also ask her if gaisano will be built in the old market or in bagacay

FYI, according to city hall people, Gaisano Mall will be built in the old public market while the property which they bought in Brgy. Bagacay will be their warehouse.

City hall is of the moment waiting for approval from COA of the contract price and finalizing some docs.

This is the problem when it involves government property kasi ang daming proseso. Unlike pag private, once nabayaran go na...

Calbayog has 157 Barangays with a population of 163,657 (NSCB data-as of August 1, 2007). What is included here are the barangays within the city proper and its vicinity. My only question here is, what is the criteria in choosing or considering these barangays as part of the urban center? They did not include Carayman and Palanas which is very near the city proper.

Civil Aviation Authority to install Precision Approach Path Indicator in Catarman airport
CATARMAN, Northern Samar, Mar 10 (PIA) – Governor Paul Daza is elated over the assurance of Director Andrew Basallote, chief of Air Navigation Services of Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) of putting up a Precision Approach Path Indicator (PAPI) in Catarman Airport. This was learned from the Provincial Information Office.

A PAPI is a visual aid system or light arrayed alongside the runway which provides guidance for the pilot with a safe and accurate glide slope in its final approach to the runway. This will also help the pilot in approaching a runway with very poor visibility.

In a report taken from Sylma Lutao of Northern Samar Provincial Information Office, Daza stressed the importance of installing a PAPI for the safety of travelers as well as of the community, to reduce cancellations of flights in the future.

Report from Provincial Tourism Office disclosed that on its Monthly Actual Load Factor data, 38 of 624 flights to Catarman from January to December 2010 were cancelled while 149 were delayed due to lack of PAPI installed in the Half-a-Century old runway of the capital town of Northern Samar.

There are three airlines carrying passengers that fly Catarman-Manila and vice versa route: Air Philippines (Daily) , Cebu Pacific every Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays, Zest Air on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays with Air Philippines also flying to Cebu-Catarman route and vice versa during Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.

The people of Northern Samar gladly welcome this new development in the Air Transportation. http://www.pia.gov.ph/?m=1&t=1&id=21510

My mom owns a shop in the public market and I just want to ask if the stall arrangement will still be the same, Can you also ask her if gaisano will be built in the old market or in bagacay

I was told before that the people who have stalls in the old market will get first priority in the new market, but I'm not sure if it's further based on seniority or not. I'll try to remember to ask again.
I'm hoping to be taking those pictures tomorrow, March 13th.

That could be true, but I heard, from a city hall official, that the mall still could be in Bagacay because the bidding has not begun yet. The new City Hospital has priority and it is up for bid either this month or next. Supposedly the City Hospital is to be built somewhere between Marju Krisel and the Airport.
Just what I heard now, nothing official, but it came from a city hall official.

It's nice to see that the local officials in Catarman are rehabilitating their streets. Their streets kasi are terrible sayang yung magandang building kung eyesore ang kalsada. One more thing pala they should also put in place a good drainage system kasi sayang yung rehabilitated streets kung yung tubig stagnant pa rin it will cause erosion. Catarman is easily flooded because of poor drainage system.
Good urban planning must be prepared considering that it is growing.

Catarman Airport badly needs this, especially so that pag poor visibility cancelled palagi ang flight doon katulad ng nangyari last December. Grabe, my cousins (Calbayognons) na nagvia Catarman were not able to spend Christmas with us.
I agree. Kahapon lang sakay ako dapat ng Airphil going to Manila. Tapos hindi naka-land ang plane. Eh dapat kaninang morning may commitment ako eh :( Ang nangyari, today at 7:30 lang nakaalis :( :( :(

Accounts by my friends who grew up in Allen that when they were small the rock was not too close to the house at the right side owned by the Cabacangs. ONe of the Cabacang siblings recounted that the rock is constantly inching up towards their stairs every year. Now the rock have expanded towards the street.

Allen people also recounted that the rock was a foot away when the existing street was concreted. In reverence to the growing rock local officials decided to preserve the rock even if it constantly poses hazard to motorists.

http://i557.photobucket.com/albums/ss11/catarcity/Allen/IMG00848-20110121-1540.jpg

Do our rocks really grow scientifically? Hope that any scientific explanation would dispel the long-time belief and reverence by the locals towards the rock.

Yes because for a very long time. . .The elected Mayor is not aligned with the elected Congressman and Governor even during the time of Marcos. Hence, most of the time, LGU Catarman is left to fend for itself and lesser aid is being allocated for its development. Most of its street in the town proper are more than 40 years old and badly needed rehabilitation. LGU funds are not enough for the needed infrastructure. it needed the pork barrel of the congressman and the much larger IRA of the province. Calbayog does not need an aid from the province because its IRA itself is more than enough to finance its urban planning and new infrastructure projects every year.

At present the newly elected Mayor belong to the same party with the Governor and Congressman in the 1st District. Most of the ongoing infra projects around the town today came from the Congressman thru the DPWH. With the new teamwork, I can see that developments could bring Catarman to greater heights.

tungkol naman doon sa gaisano. the reason "daw" kung bakit ngkakaproblema cla mgtayo sa old public market is because the old public market was loaned before by the city. im not expert with these kind of matter, but what i've heared is its because of amortization problems daw. the gaisano representatives was in calbayog kasi kahapon to have a meeting with the local government; ill try to get a clearer info about it next time. and i also heared that the other Gaisano (don't know which gaisano) is going to build a mall/dept store in catbalogan city.^^

2 Ateneo grads top bar exams

By Philip Tubeza
Philippine Daily Inquirer
First Posted 04:52:00 03/18/2011

Filed Under: Board Exams, Language, Education

MANILA, Philippines—Students from the Ateneo de Manila University bagged the two top slots of the 2010 bar examinations, with Atenean Cesareo Antonio S. Singzon Jr. placing number one.

Associate Justice Conchita Carpio-Morales said 982 of the 4,847 takers, or 20.26 percent, the lowest in nearly a decade, passed the exams. The passing grade this year was 72.5, said Supreme Court spokesperson Midas Marquez. (Go to www.inquirer.net for a complete list of those who passed.)

“Better luck next time for those who did not make it. Sometimes, luck plays a big role in the exams,” said Morales, who announced the results before a crowd in front of the high court.

Family of lawyers

Singzon, who comes from a family of lawyers and was the valedictorian of his class, had a grade of 89 percent in claiming the top spot.

“He comes from Catbalogan. His great-grandfather was a lawyer and so was his grandfather and his father. All of them reputedly bright,” said remedial law bar examiner Rodrigo Lope Quimbo.

“Ari is also a very bright fellow,” he said, also noting that Singzon’s grandmother perished in the MV Dońa Paz tragedy in 1987.

Second place went to Filemon Ray L. Javier of Ateneo de Manila (with a grade of 86.95 percent) while Paolo Carlo C. Tolentino of the Arellano University got the third slot (86.8 percent).

Janette R. Ancog of Ateneo de Davao University landed fourth with a grade of 85.9 percent while Johana T. Sunga of Ateneo de Manila placed fifth with 85.85 percent.

No shutout for UP

Students from University of the Philippines took the sixth to eight slots in the top ten—Krizelle Marie F. Poblacion (85.65), Maria Christina C. Ortua and Krystal Lyn T. Uy (both tied for 7th place with a grade of 85.05 percent), and Joanna Eileen M. Capones (84.8 percent).

William Benson S. Gan of Ateneo de Manila took the 9th slot with a grade of 84.75 percent while Glenn C. Carampatana of the University of San Carlos and Darren L. Salipsip of Arellano University both tied for the remaining 10th place with similar grades of 84.55 percent.

“Praise to God! Praise to God!” cried out Nilda Mallari after seeing the name of her youngest daughter Ianne Joy on the list of those who passed the exams. Her daughter cleared the bar on her first attempt.

“I prayed. I went on a pilgrimage to Our Lady of Manaoag. I prayed before the (Black) Nazarene (in Quiapo). My entire family prayed. Even the bishops prayed for her because she’s a good child,” said the proud mother, tears of joy welling beneath her eyes.
“She’s a working student. She’s a good child. She deserves it. Thank you, thank you,” Mallari gushed.

Those who passed will take their oath at the Philippine International Conventional Center in Pasay City on April 14. One of them will be Margarita Navarro-Gutierrez, daughter of beleaguered Ombudsman Merceditas Gutierrez.

Brush up on English

For those who failed and are thinking of taking the exams again, bar examiner Quimbo offers this advice: Brush up on your English.

“When I read some of the answers, I was like ‘What did he say?’ Many of those who got a grade of below 50 did not know how to write and speak in English,” said Quimbo.

Under the rules, an examinee who gets a grade below 50 in any one subject is automatically disqualified even if his average is 75 percent or better. And Quimbo said it was not just a matter of grammatically incorrect essays.

“If it were just some grammatical mistakes, I would have let it pass. No one’s perfect. But the problem was that some of the words they used were really wrong. They had no sense. They did not make any sense,” Quimbo said.

“The reasons why a high number of examinees are disqualified vary. The most common, I think, would be the inability of the examinee to express himself in English. Because the law is written in English and because advocacy needs to be in the English language, the examinees must be able to answer questions in English,” Quimbo added.

My friend who went there brought a bottle of pinkish sand from Sila beach as her souvenir.

@makatiprime yes. that is lao-ang proper. you won't find pedicabs there but tricycles only to go around the island. i have heard a lot about caohagan from my relatives in pambujan that it's really beautiful but never been there.

@catarcity are you in northern samar right now? im actually in pambujan but i'll be going back to tacloban sometime next week.

@catarcity ok i'll try to take a pic of the new municipal building here in pambujan.
By the way, the 3rd pic of Caohagan island that you posted looks familiar. They've been there so many times na kasi.

@qailord i think the most visited by tourist in northern samar is Biri.

@makatiprime Caohagan Island is under the jurisdiction of Pambujan, Northern Samar. It is adjacent to barangay Paninirongan of pambujan. The island is protected and considered as marine and bird sanctuary and also a dive site.

Yung Eastern Samar may claim that it is Calicoan, Samar Province may claim Caluwayan and Northern Samar may claim Biri or San Antonio.

As for Northern Samar only, Biri is suppose to be the number one destination in the whole province. It is in fact the Icon destination of the province. But local picnickers prefer San Antonio because of proximity and facilities.

My friend who went there brought a bottle of pinkish sand from Sila beach as her souvenir.

Wow! Tarnate Island! A friend of mine from Manila had an adventure dyan sa mga islands na yan, hop lang siya nang hop, hanggang makarating yata siya ng Leyte. I saw his photo of the high school there. Ang ganda ng view.

I also have a cousin who gave me a small bottle of pinkish sand. Yun actually ang naka-engganyo sa akin to visit Sila Island. And it also made me realize that I have to know every nook and cranny of Northern Samar :)

And from Tarnate, may masasakyan ba ako to San Isidro or Victoria?

They shooed away an investor and it cost a life pa. Kawawa naman yung security guard.

I have all those links to my pictures because for some reason it doesn't give the "copy URL" anymore. This was the only way I could figure to do it right off hand. It does take up a lot less space and loads quicker.
The first few are pictures of the new market and bus depot. I still haven't been able to get inside though. Still working on that.
The next set is the Marcial's Grille.
The last 2 sets are the new sign they are putting on the Ciriaco Hotel. A progression set of pictures.

Papuntang jubang, Capul ka na lang mas mura kasi. kainis talaga ang airphilexpress. avoid as much as possible! i had a horrendous experience last week. manila-cebu-catarman suppose to be. arrived in cebu at 6:15AM, airphil used a320 from manila. Then the cebu-catarman leg got cancelled. no food provided and next flight of the same route is 2 days after so no choice but to get on the cebu-tacloban flight. cebu-catarman was suppose to leave at 10AM. Cebu-Tacloban was also suppose to leave at 4:15PM, but got delayed and we left only at around 6:30PM on a very worn out looking inside and out turboprop. Then we had to do the 6-7 hours or so overland trip to catarman on a dilapidated van.

So puwede akong mag-San Isidro-Sila Island-Jubang Bay in Capul? Even my friends from Luzon would want to visit the place. Wala ba talagang lodging inn dun? Kahit lang yung pinaka-modest sana.

If ever, mga nasa anong range kaya ang price kung maghire ng boat from Tarnate to mainland? Pag pumupunta ka ng Tarnate, how do you go back to the mainland?

Thanks in advance :)

kainis talaga ang airphilexpress. avoid as much as possible! i had a horrendous experience last week. manila-cebu-catarman suppose to be. arrived in cebu at 6:15AM, airphil used a320 from manila. Then we had to do the 6-7 hours or so overland trip to catarman on a dilapidated van.

yeah..
