Mukhang wala pang updates sa McDo-Calbayog. It was on the 2nd quarter last year that they scouted for a site. Preferred nila yung along the highway for drive-thru. I just dont know if nakakita na sila. But for sure daw they will be opening a store here. In fact, dapat late last year pa yun. But accdg to my source mukhang Ormoc muna then Calbayog and their tentative site daw is in front of PNB-Calbayog.:)

P1.134 B infra project to stir development in Samar’s first district

By NINFA B. QUIRANTE (PIA Samar)
February 23, 2009

CALBAYOG CITY, Samar – The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH)-Samar First Engineering District Office, Calbayog City is all set to implement various infrastructure projects pegged at P1.134 billion consisting of roads and bridges construction and rehabilitation.

This was bared by District engineer Virgilio Eduarte in an interview by the Catbalogan media on Thursday.

Eduarte added that the district has advertised five projects totaling to P178 M for public bidding this February which are considered as pump priming projects.

An allocation of P20M is intended for Carayman-Naga section with one kilometer-length. Another project the Naga-Burabud section with also one kilometer stretch also costs P20M. Still another P20M is intended for the Cagsalaosao-Gadgaran section.

The diversion road is said to ease the worsening traffic condition along the National Highway within the city proper and is also expected to promote the speedy development of trade in the province.

Rehabilitation of the damaged national road along Calbayog-Catarman runs 5.44 kilometers that amounted to P98M. Said project will help the residents and motorists speed up their mobility.

Another project, the construction of Baruz Bridge worth P20M will link Matuguinao to Gandara, a fulfillment of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo’s promise of connecting Matuguinao to the growth center and at the same time ensure the immediate delivery of farm produce to the market.

DPWH aims for the total development of the First District of Samar. (with reports from M. Gomez)

Agas-Agas bridge

http://i42.tinypic.com/2uo6on6.jpg
Dec 8, 2008

The Agas-Agas bridge is being built near Sogod in southern Leyte.

The national highway was clinging precariously to unstable mountain sides and was getting washed out from time to time by the heavy rains.

This bridge should eliminate the landslide dangers and keep the highway open and safe by bypassing the problem areas.

The Japanese company Sumitomo Construction LTD is the main player in putting this project together.

The previous route was carved into the sides of some very steep mountains that often collapsed during the heavy rains in southern Leyte.

These landslides would shut down the entire National Highway system so this solution should make the road more stable and safe. When complete, it should stretch across a gap around 350 meters in length.

from Abuyog and Capoocan towns to Tacloban are waray speaking areas, Leyte,Leyte and Calubian are mixed cebuano and waray, the rest of the island are cebuano speaking, some of the southern leyte towns are mixed with Bol-anons..

nope because Leyte was known as a waray speaking island..not knowing that majority living in here are Cebuano/bisaya speaking people...most of the people who asked me where i came from, i said leyte, then they reply 'ahh waray diay ka?..leyte means coming from the island of leyte because leyte is well known than southern leyte, and it is very long to answer 'southern leyte', diba..like 'taga Bicol ko" rather than "taga Camarines Norte ko"..or "taga CdeO ko bai" rather than taga Cagayan de oro ko bai..:lol:

considering to the cebuano speaking residents of Leyte island, mas damo it makakayakan ngan nakakaintiende hin waray than waray speaking people to speak cebuano.that was my observation when i was in leyte roaming around leyte island for more than 2 years as a sales agent..ang trend mangud kun asa kasagaran muadto ang mga tawo especially mangumpra or magshopping or magprocess sa mga papers, tua bya padulong sa tacloban..so ikaw kung muadto ka dapat naa kay gamayng kumpyansa nga makasabot ka sa mga tawo nga imong giadtoan..something to do with influence..:)

http://leytesamardaily.com/templates/ja_teline/images/logo.gifOver 400 cave enthusiasts to join 9th Caving Congress
TACLOBAN CITY - Over 400 cave enthusiasts from all over the country are expected to join this year’s 9th National Caving Congress with Tourism Secretary Joseph Ace Durano as the main guest.

The opening of the weeklong event, which is the first to be staged in the region, would he held in the city with the participants proceeding immediately to the main site which is in Basey, Samar, Jayson Garrido, president of the Philippine Caving Association, said during a press conference.

The 9th National Caving Congress is scheduled from May 11 to 15 with the participants to be house in an elementary school in Basey. Participants coming from the United States, Canada and some European and Asian countries are also expected to join on this congress.

“This is a big event for us. We will not only hold a mere congress but also make a tour among nine caves in Basey like those in Sohoton and Rawis,” Garrido, who is from this city, said.

This event is being supported by the regional office of the Department of Tourism and the local government of Basey under Mayor Wilfredo Estorninos.

Tourism Regional Director Karina Rosa Tiopes said that this is a kind of event which enjoys support from their department as this would not only help showcase the natural beauty of the host area but, more importantly, preserve the natural-made attraction.

“Our role here is not only in the promotion side but also help in the preservation of our caves,” she said.

The tourism regional director said that the region’s caves, particularly the Sohoton National Park, are enjoying a relative good number of visiting tourists.

Mayor Estorninos, who was present during the press conference held at the DoT-8 office, said that the Sohoton National Park is not only a safe haven among tourists but also a spectacular site.

The Basey town mayor said that for the past years now, Sohoton has become the top attraction of their town. Last year, close to 2,000 tourists, both local and foreign, went to Sohoton National Park.

Garrido said that protecting our caves is not only for the sake of attracting tourists but also for the good of the entire eco-system.

“Preserving our caves is good for the entire (eco) system. And one of the important aspects of a cave is that it is a good source of a ground water and we all know that we cannot exist without water,” he said. (JOEY A. GABIETA)

Funding complements, supplements Gandara-Matuguinao road project

By NINFA B. QUIRANTE (PIA Samar)
February 23, 2009

CATBALOGAN CITY, Samar – With the steady pour of funding sources for the Gandara-Matuginao road project, it won’t be very long before Matuginao town is re-connected to the growth center in Gandara town.

http://www.samarnews.com/GIF/gandara_matuguinao.gif

In an interview with the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), Engr. Virgilo Eduarte bared that one funding came after another to steadily support the on-going road project to Matuguinao.

On July15, 2009, President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo led the inauguration of the Sto Niño Bridge in Gandara town. Considered as the biggest hurdle in the obstacle course called Gandara-Matuginao road project, the bridge brought hope to the once abandoned dream of pursuing the rocky road.

But with the attention of national leaders being focused, Eduarte said that the Department of Agriculture (DA) allocated some millions from the Farm to Market Road Project.

Still another funding worth P25M will stretch the rocky road more, nearing its final destination called Matuguinao.

As some more smaller bridges need more funds, Representative Reynaldo Uy of the First District also vowed to set aside funds if only to complete the road network.

DPWH also supplied the information that some P20M has been set aside for the completion of Barruz Bridge.

A health worker who hails from Gandara informed PIA that construction is going on in the road stretch.

In a phone interview with Vice-Mayor Aran Boller of Matuguinao town, he said that once completed it could really spell a big deduction in the freight of their farm produce. It will not just be cheaper but faster because for thirty minutes, the trip is over compared to the boat ride for four hours. Boller also disclosed that Governor Milagrosa Tan is interested to fund the road for another P22M.

Earlier on, Matuguinao Mayor Carlos dela Cruz articulated his wish for the rehabilitation of the deteriorating road to finally reach this heart of Samar.

Some residents still recall when Matuguinao town was still linked to Gandara through the road network constructed by Rolito Go, but big floods destroyed the road and cut Matuguinao town from the road network. Matuguinao folks resorted to the Gandara River for transportation.

But the mayor himself admitted the more expensive freight is charged by boats.

With this new development and the steady flow of funding from the national government through various means, the 20 kilometer road will be completed soon enough to usher economic activities in the area.

SEAIR HAS STOPPED FLYING TO BORONGAN!!??
I just got informed that SEAIR has stopped flying Manila-Borongan route for economical reasons... But not sure the specific reason..why???.. Is it due to high fares that's why only few are patronizing them? (Low profits). Or is it due to any political issue? :ohno:

Hope it would not happen to Calbayog and Catarman as 3 airlines (PAL Express, Cebu Pacific and Zest Air) are competing in these routes.

calbayognon
March 3rd, 2009, 03:53 AM
I think that would not happen to Calbayog and Catarman even if three airlines are serving there because the passenger traffic is high in these areas. These airports were served by both Pal (in the late 70's and 80's and early 90's before the Fokker 50 was phased out and Asian Spirit -90's and up to present-Zesr Air)

I arrived in Calbayog last Monday via Cebu Pacific from Manila. We were 67 (passenger capacity of ATR is 74). And PALExpress 59 (passenger capacity of Q400 is 76). And come to think of it Daily ang PAL and 3x ang CEb Pac. Halos sabay kasi ung boarding ng dalawang airline sa terminal 3. Nauna lang ang PALExpress so i had the opportunity to count the passengers. Margin of error siguro plus or minus 5.

pthfndr19
March 3rd, 2009, 10:40 AM
^^ that's good for Calbayog and Catarman... we have more passengers hehe...

Madami rin bang passengers going to Calbayog or Catarman?

Capul is an island-municipality in Northern Samar where the dialect is Inabaknon; similar to an Indonesian dialect.. People there are called Abaknon or Capulenos.. Its neighboring island-municipalities of San Antonio and San Vicente; and some parts of the municipality of San Isidro in mainland Northern Samar are Cebuano-speaking.

Gov`t pushes EV as top tourist destination, says PA Nierras

TACLOBAN CITY-The Regional Development Council (RDC) has created a committee that will advance Eastern Visayas’ bid to become more prepared in the promotion of six tourism development areas (TDAs) identified under the country’s super regions master plan.

With the creation of the TDAs, the region expects to draw half a million of tourists in the next few years, Presidential Assistant for Eastern Visayas Cynthia Nierras, who also chairs the Regional Tourism Coordinating Committee (RTCC), said.

The RTCC was created as an affiliate committee to facilitate the harmonization of plans and development efforts of various stakeholders in the region. Tourism development, along with agribusiness and information and communication technology was identified as priority of the RDC.

Under the Central Philippines Tourism Super Region Management Plan adopted by the RDC last year, identified as TDAs are the Samar – Leyte Interface (Tacloban-Basey), North Western Leyte (Ormoc), Northern Leyte (Biliran), Southeastern Samar Island (Guiuan), Southern Leyte (Sogod Bay Area) and the North Western Samar (Catarman).

The RTCC is planning to launch the promotion component of the program during Leyte’s hosting of this year’s Palarong Pambansa on April 26 to May 2, 2009.

“This is the best occasion to do the soft launching of our promotional activity…all the

17 regions of the country are bringing delegations of at least 500 each,” Nierras said.

The presidential assistant for the region said that all local leaders within the TDAs would be formed into a committee that would implement the regional plan.

“National government can support but maintenance task should be delegated to the local government and the community as well,” Nierras said.

According to her, the program would further boost the campaign of the Department of Tourism (DOT) in the region, under Director Karina Rosa Tiopes, to make the region among the country’s top tourist havens.

“This is to help the DOT in pushing tourism development in the region. We have been encouraging memberships from the six provincial governments, state universities and colleges and the private sector,” Nierras said.

Nierras said that the region has many tourism attractions but remain largely undeveloped and unknown.

“We will come up with regional action plans that will identify doable interventions to make us prepared. We have to bring this down to local government units involved,” Nierras said.

Based on the listing of the regional office of the Department of Tourism, attractions in and around Tacloban City include the Santo Niño Shrine; Leyte Landing Memorial Park in Palo, Leyte; Sohoton Natural Bridge National Park in Basey, Samar; and the San Juanico Bridge.

The Biliran area has offshore islands with white sand beaches, mountains, waterfalls, hot springs and rice lands. Southeastern Samar Island area, on the other hand, includes Calicoan Island and Matarinao Bay.

The Sogod Bay area offers opportunities for viewing whale sharks across Sogod and Liloan Bays. In addition, there are several reefs, walls and caves in Sogod Bay and around Limasawa that have become popular dive sites.

Biri and Las Rosas Islands, which have good snorkeling and dives sites, were spotted as priority for tourism development. Northern Samar has an advantage with its port with regular boat services to Luzon

Ormoc City has developed as a resort area catering to leisure and business visitors from Cebu. In addition to its beaches, there is also the Lake Danao National Park on the hills just east of Ormoc City and the Leyte Golf and Country Club.

Aside from Nierras office, also included as members of the RTCC are RDC tourism sector representative, DOT, National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA), six provincial governments, Leyte Chamber of Commerce & Industry (LCCI), academe, Department of Trade & Industry (DTI) and the German Technical Cooperation (GTZ).

“Tourism covers a big scope. Membership will be expanded to involve more people in the tourism promotion efforts,” Nierras said.

Agas-Agas Bridge to Boost EV Tourism (http://www.abs-cbnnews.com/nation/regions/03/05/09/agas-agas-bridge-boost-eastern-visayas-tourism)
By JENETTE FARIOLA-RUEDAS, ABS-CBN Tacloban | 03/05/2009 3:35 PM

Tacloban City - On a tour of infastructure around the region Wednesday, Public Works Secretary Hermogenes Ebdane Jr. expressed confiedence that the Agas-Agas bridge in Southern Leyte would help boost tourism in Eastern Visayas.

"The project suits the Japanese technology. You are very lucky because this will help you boost tourism in the region and so we will be adding some amenities here for the visitors," Ebdane said in an interview.

The Agas-Agas bridge, a viaduct standing approximately 1,000 feet from the ground, was seen as a permanent solution to the natural movement of loose soil aggregates in the area. It is being constructed to prevent landslides in the area especially during rainy days, which may result in damages to life and property.

The construction of the Agas-Agas bridge started in 2006 with an allocation of P995 million.

As of now, the bridge is 78 percent complete, and will be finished within a year. The bridge is also one of the road network priorities of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, which will serve as a link connecting Luzon and Mindanao through the Lilioan Ferry Terminal.

The fastest way and convenient is via Calbayog.Sumakay ka ng barko to Calbayog. Palacio shipping lines has a regular trip CEB-CALBAYOG-CEB. When you arrive in Calbayog, you proceed to the terminal, maraming bus and van papuntang Catarman. Almost 2 hours ang trip.

pangutana: unsa ka oras abot sa cebu?..kung buntag ka abot cebu proceed nalang ka fastcraft via ormoc about 8am, abot ka ormoc at 9:30, tacloban 11, then lunch ka, then proceed napod ka van direct catarman para madali, abot ka didto before sunset..:)

how much is the fare from Cebu to Calbayog via Palacio Lines..then Calbayog to Catarman din..

My wife is from Malitbog.. i love the place.. especially during Holy Week.. anha gajud me diha.. We go shopping at Sogod usually or in Maasin.. but mostly Sogod jud kay morag doul ra man.. too bad.. they still dont accept Credit Cards for transactions.. hehehe.

During long holidays, well especially Holy Week, since most of the moneyed and popular names in Malitbog like the Escarios, Averasturis etc... would find solace in their hometown during these days likewise with Cebu or Manila based professionals.

I love the tranquil, the calm seas, the visits to relatives as far as Padre Burgos and to the town proper. We love to join the procession, hahahayy... naka ka miss... since 2 holy weeks na yata wala me kaadto kay na busy ga jud. We hope to go there again this coming Holy Week... Wait for me and family.. Malitbog!!!!

Libagon to Maasin is more of Bol-anon than Cebuano

Bol-anon dialect is a by-product of the Cebuano Language. So it is safe to say, that either Bol-anon, Surigaonon, Cagay-anon... still a Cebuano.

Upgrading of Guiuan Airport nears completion, PA Nierras says

By Philippine Information Agency (PIA 8)
March 9, 2009

TACLOBAN CITY – The Guiuan Airport Development Project which is a SONA commitment of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, will soon be completed, Presidential Assistant for Eastern Visayas Hon. Cynthia Nierras informed.

The airport is seen as the key to the coming of more tourists to the island paradise which is being promoted by no less than President Arroyo as a major destination in the Visayas.

Presidential Assistant for Eastern Visayas Cynthia Nierras

PA Nierras said that she recently inspected the project, particularly the ongoing construction of the perimeter fence, asphalt overlay of runway, and the installation of Single Phase electrical Line with a contract amount of P105.998 Million, and she was told that the work will be completed in April of 2009.

During the February meeting of the Regional Development Council of Eastern Visayas, the Project Monitoring team reporter said that the construction of the perimeter fence, asphalt overlay of runway, and the installation of the Single-Phase Electrical Line is ongoing with a contract prize of P105.998 Million.

The construction of the Apron and Taxiway was completed in September of 2007. Additional concreting of Apron and Taxiway was completed in January of 2008 while the Passenger Terminal Building was completed in August of 2008.

The Guiuan Airport Development Project has an estimated project cost of P155 Million and so far, P10 Million and P15 Million was allocated in 2006 and 2007 for the construction and concreting of Apron and Taxiway and rehabilitation of the Passenger Terminal Building. An amount of P130 Million has been programmed for 2008 for the construction of the perimeter fence, site acquisition and construction of access road, completion of apron and taxiway and asphalt overlay of runway.

The Guiuan Airport Development Project is a priority project of President Arroyo in line with her super region concept of development where Region 8 is part of the Central Philippines Super Region envisioned to be the tourism center of the country.

In Region 8, the Calicoan Islands in Guiuan is being developed as an important tourist destination. A sanctuary of privacy and indulgence highlighted by tropical landscape and surrounded by the relaxing sound of the ocean – this is how Calicoan, will win the hearts of local and international tourists.

Calicoan Island boasts of miles of white sand beaches. With powerful swells rolling in from the Pacific over the 10,000 meters Philippine Deep, Calicoan is a surfer's paradise.
