qailord May 22nd, 2011, 07:30 AM Hundreds demand justice for slain mayor at funeral (http://newsinfo.inquirer.net/7879/hundreds-demand-justice-for-slain-mayor-at-funeral)
CALBAYOG CITY, Samar, Philippines—The streets of Calbayog were filled with yellow ribbons and confetti as its slain mayor was laid to rest Saturday afternoon.
At least 1,000 people in yellow shirts, many of them from far-flung towns in Samar, joined the funeral march that brought Mayor Reynaldo Uy to his final resting place at the Saint Ignatius Cemetery, about a kilometer away from the city center.
“Justice for Mayor Ining Uy” were the words printed on their shirts.
One of those who joined the funeral march was 63-year-old Elena Sanchez from the island town of Tagapul-an, Samar.
She said that like many Samareños, she wanted justice for slain mayor and his family.
“He was a very good leader. He took care of us, poor people by providing us projects that benefited us,” she said.
The police have yet to arrest the lone gunman who shot and killed Uy, a stalwart of the Liberal Party in Samar, inside covered multi-purpose hall of Hinabangan town, Samar, on April 30 despite the P2 million bounty offered by the family.
Superintendent Elizar Egloso, information officer of the regional police office, assured Uy’s family and supporters that the police were doing everything to solve the murder.
“We have no breakthrough yet as no one has surfaced to help us identify the suspect (sic),” said Egloso in an interview by mobile phone. “But we assure the family of Mayor Uy that we will not stop until the (killer) is arrested.”
The casket bearing Uy’s remains was brought from the City Hall to the Saints Peter and Paul Cathedral in Calbayog for an 8:30 a.m. Requiem Mass and necrological service that lasted for nearly four hours. The Mass was officiated by Bishop Isabelo Abarquez assisted by about 30 priests from the Diocese of Calbayog.
In his Homily, Abarquez condemned the killing of the mayor, whom he described as a well-loved doctor and leader.
“He was not just someone, but a somebody among his folks… a somebody among his constituents and a somebody among his colleagues in the House of Representatives. His death is not a defeat but a victory,” he said.
An emotionally charged necrological service followed the Mass.
Among those who spoke were Iligan City Mayor Lawrence Cruz and Representatives Mel Senen Sarmiento of Samar, Raul Daza of Northern Samar and Teddy Casiño of the partylist group Bayan Muna.
Casiño described Uy as one of the leading figures in Samar who fought against forced disappearances and extra-judicial killings.
Uy, he added, was one of the few courageous leaders who opposed the assignment of former Major General Jovito Palparan in Samar.
“Who would have thought that he would die in violence,” Casiño said.
Daza cautioned Uy’s supporters against resorting to violence in their quest for justice.
“I am calling for calm and sobriety. Let us not go on with the cycle of violence. Violence is counter-productive,” Daza said.
Uy’s daughter, Rosa Jessica Uy-Delgado, said they never thought that such a tragedy would fall on the family.
But she said she hoped her father’s killer would be punished.

Shot taken upon reaching the falls. In the picture are my two guides who patiently helped me get a motorcycle, find another way to the falls when I decided not to risk my life traveling in the worst road I've ever encountered in my life, and cross the river.

What the locals call "Embudo." This is a funnel-like part of Kangpongkol although medyo malayo ito sa falls.
But I wouldn't recommend it to my friends yet. I will have to wait na ma-semento nang maayos ang kalsada doon before I tell my friends to visit it. And I hope magawa ang road doon soon.

Ang falls na nasa Seven Hills ay yung Busay, which is just a 5-minute walk from the road. Will post here a photo of Busay next time.

Long shot, approaching Kangpongkol Falls.

Shot taken upon reaching the falls. In the picture are my two guides who patiently helped me get a motorcycle, find another way to the falls when I decided not to risk my life traveling in the worst road I've ever encountered in my life, and cross the river.
http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5268/5753634102_953b520602_z.jpg
What the locals call "Embudo." This is a funnel-like part of Kangpongkol although medyo malayo ito sa falls.
But I wouldn't recommend it to my friends yet. I will have to wait na ma-semento nang maayos ang kalsada doon before I tell my friends to visit it. And I hope magawa ang road doon soon.
Thanks Miss N for the nice pics of Kangpongkol Falls, this is part of Brgy Happy Valley. I didnt know na mahirap pa lang puntahan ito. One thing I noticed the waters are tamer during summer. the pic that I had was taken during rainy days hence the water seems more violent that create rapids.

Monday, May 23, 2011
THE mayor of Calbayog City who was killed in Hinabagan town on April 30 was given a funeral Sunday inspired by that of former President Corazon Aquino.
From the City Hall, Mayor Reynaldo Uy’s remains were transferred to the Saints Peter and Paul Cathedral where a funeral mass, which was officiated by Bishop Isabelo Abarquez and assisted by almost 30 priests from the Diocese of Calbayog, was held at 8:30 a.m.
The church was filled with hundreds of mournful supporters who wore yellow shirts with “Justice for Mayor Ining Uy” print.
The victim’s family, the officials and friends who came to attend the funeral rites also wore yellow shirts. Yellow ribbons and confetti filled the streets of the city.
The mayor’s funeral car was decorated with yellow flowers of chrysanthemum, daisies and orchids.
Abarquez, in his homily, said that he joins the grief of the family of the slain mayor, whom he described as a well-loved doctor and leader. However, his life “ended so tragically,” the bishop added.
“In my personal capacity as Bishop of Calbayog, I condemn this killing,” Abarquez said.
Abarquez also called for Uy’s family and the people of Samar to avoid violence, as it will only spur another evil.
“We do not encounter evil with another evil. Let us strengthen our faith in Christ because this is the only way we can avoid further violence,” he said.
The bishop stressed the need to be wary of violence, rage and revenge, as they will only bring the people of Samar to nowhere.
“That object knows no other motives. It breeds worst anomalies in our personal, social and political lives. Let us void that logic at all cost,” the bishop said, referring to the possible violence that would erupt as an offshoot of the killing of Mayor Uy.
A necrological service followed after the mass where officials, including Iligan City Mayor Lawrence Cruz, Bayan Muna party-list Representative Teddy Casino, Northern Samar Representative and Deputy Speaker Raul Daza, Samar first district Representative Mel Senen Sarmiento, Board Member Eunice Babalcon and Calbayog City Administrator Emerlito Montealto, delivered their eulogy.
Uy’s eldest daughter, Rosa Jessica Uy-Delgado, delivered the response on behalf of the family.
Daza, who has been friends with Uy for 25 years, said Uy was the only official in the history of Samar visited by a Philippine President on his death. President Benigno Aquino III paid visit Uy’s wake on May 5.
Daza, in his eulogy, asked the supporters of Uy to observe calm and sobriety amid distressing times.
Sarmiento recalled his personal and political relations with the slain mayor.
Casino acknowledged the mayor a “tunay na aktibista sa puso at prinsipyo.”

Ang falls na nasa Seven Hills ay yung Busay, which is just a 5-minute walk from the road. Will post here a photo of Busay next time.

Yung franchisee is my friend Irene, parang initially lang this semester is two year courses ang offered nila while their permit for the four year courses sa CHED is pending. But they were assured na by July lalabas yun kaya probably second semester may four year courses na sila or next school year.

But they were assured na by July lalabas yun kaya probably second semester may four year courses na sila or next school year. That's good to know. Mas magiging active ang campus scene ng Calbayog with the presence of ACLC. In our case, ACLC upped the ante in sports.
Sa tingin ko Ormoc ang may pinaka-active na college basketball scene sa Region 8 with ACLC and WLC offering full scholarships, allowances, gym benefits and even free lodging for non-Ormocanon players. Matindi rin ang recruitment nila ng ibang players as far as Cebu and Bicol. Sigurado ako mangyayari din 'to sa Calbayog.

Sila lagi nananalo eh.

Incidentally, ACLC and WLC will face off with two Cebu university teams in an open basketball tournament as part of the Ormoc fiesta celebration. Sorry for the OT.

Miss N May 27th, 2011, 12:35 PM Suddenly, nahalukay ko itong pic from my hard drive. The tshirt that the person is wearing is one of the shirts that discovernorthernsamar's website (http://discovernorthernsamar.com) recently gave away for free to promote Northern Samar tourism and to promote the site as well.
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-CCVgAkGXv14/Td97f0ev3FI/AAAAAAAABto/-NqzLx_CLHY/s400/nortehanon-shirt.jpg
In front, it reads: NORTHERN SAMAR IS MY PARADISE
At the back, it reads: MAKE IT YOURS, TOO! and then under that is the URL of the website in smaller font.
It's our small effort and contribution to the tourism of Northern Samar.

qailord May 27th, 2011, 02:33 PM OSYs help maintain Samar national roads (http://www.pia.gov.ph/?m=1&t=1&id=34809)
by Alice Nicart
CALBAYOG, Samar (May 27) PIA – About 50 out-of-school youths (OSYs) await job description order as they find short-term employment at the Department of Public Works (DPWH), First Engineering District, Calbayog Samar.
Administrative Officer II Ma. Nenita Gomez informed that the JOs will be deployed each to some 3.5 kilometers as their work assignment where they are expected to cut off the grasses and other roadside maintenance work.
She added that District Engineer Virgilio Eduarte preferred the OSYs in the nearby localities as well as other marginalized males for the short-term jobs in answer to the directive of Public Works Secretary Rogelio Singson.
The laborers who will serve as augmentation work force to the District’s regular maintenance crew will be funded under the Motor Vehicle Users Charge (MVUC).
One JO, Marvin Rontos of barangay Nabang Oquendo District proudly said that the P250.00 daily earning is a big help to his family and expressed his gratitude to Engineer Eduarte for hiring him. He also said that, if he would be able to save, he might enroll again come school opening.(PIA-Samar/Alice Nicart)

Samar will be par with other tourist destinations in the Philippines... what Samar needs to attract investors is to establish peace and order and build better infrastructures specially roads, Sayang... the island alone is already beautiful how much more if ma develop :)

yup. some head of office are being assigned to a different office department. may kontrata na ata ang gaisano sa calbayog matagal na, ang lgu nalang ang hindi pa nakakatapos sa kanilang part. sayang nga lang kasi kung ganyan sila kabagal baka mawalan ng interes ang mga investors:ohno:. but if ever na mgtatayo din ang gaisano sa catbalogan or catarman mas batter sana if they'll prioritize to put it in catarman kasi ang catbalogan malapit lang sa tacloban.

puwede naman sa catbalogan, macaca-atract sila ng costumers sa mga motoristang dumadaan sa highway, which is an advantage of calbayog ang catbalogan, being pasded by the vehicles plying to manila via maharlika highway

CALBIGA, Samar—Amazing stalactites, stalagmites and other natural formations, bats, spiders, snakes, blind fishes and crabs. What more can be discovered inside the Calbiga Caves complex in Calbiga town in Samar?
For nearly a month, some of the best European speleologists and cave divers led by Matteo Rivadossi, accompanied by local spelunker Joni Abesamis Bonifacio and three other Samareños, explored the Calbiga Caves in April.
The expedition aimed to confirm an earlier theory that the municipality of Calbiga, and possibly the whole Samar Island, is crisscrossed by underground rivers. Organized by Odissea Naturavventura, it was a team up of two Italian caving associations, Gruppo Grotte Brescia.
It had permission from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) and the municipality to explore the caves.
The team included geologist Guido Rossi, filmmaker Alessandro Gatti and Gigi Casati, both cave divers; Panizzon Stefano Lillo and Merigo Davide, both cave explorers, all Italians; Frenchmen Tristan Godet and Jean Paul Sounier, both cave explorers; Belgian Marc Vandermeulen, cave diver; Slovenian Rok Stopar, cave explorer/doctor; and Russian Maria Tikka, cave explorer.
Rivadossi, Rossi, Sounier, Godet and Lillo had been to the Calbiga Caves in 2009. They discovered the 6-kilometer Camparina-Ludi Bito-Burabod Cave, which has many branches connecting to a long and beautiful underground river.
Also in 2009, a three-member team of foreign cave divers—Americans Bruce Konefe and William Hudson, and German Thomas Bodis—found the Lurodpon Cave after diving into a submerged cave passage through the Langun-Gobingob cave system.
Cavers’ destination
A favorite destination of cavers, the Calbiga Caves can be reached in one and a half hours on a foot trail from the town proper. The system covers 2,968 hectares and is said to be the largest karst in the country and one of the largest in East Asia.
It has 12 caves, including Gobingob, Langun and Bitong Mahangin that boast of giant columns of stalactites and stalagmites, unique rock formations, underground water courses and springs.
A team of Italian speleologists, who first explored the cave system in 1987, said that Langun, the main cave, has a chamber that is 270 meters long and 160 meters wide at its largest area, which can easily fit three football fields.
Gobingob, on the other hand, has a huge hall with beautiful stalagmite, stalactite and flewstone formations, while Bitong Mahangin has a single dry tunnel at the bottom of which lies a lush forest.
A protected area, the Calbiga Caves complex is the habitat of rare species of blind crabs and the 7-centimeter hypogean blind fish. At dusk, hundred of thousands of bats hover over the cave entrance.
The Italian cavers also noted in 1987 that the Calbiga has a “truly exceptional hydrogeological karst,” swallowing more than 20 watercourses.
Farther east, near Barangay Caamlongan, is another cave system called Canyawa Cave (Devil’s Cave), which was discovered and explored in 2002 by a team of French and Italian cavers. It consists of 15 galleries of distinctive features and underground rivers.
Bad weather
The latest expedition targeted the Langun-Gobingob, Camparina-Ludi Bito-Burabod, and the Lurodpon caves, as well as the Calidungan and Balogo springs. But bad weather prevented it from achieving good results.
“Sadly, 45 days of rain caused the river to become murky with zero visibility. It was then impossible to check in Calidungan,” a lake fed by the Magtingol River, according to Rivadossi.
He says the final result of the trek was “the reconstruction of the underground hydrographic net(work) from the inlet of Palaspas River into the 10-km cave system (Langun-Gobingob) to Balogo Spring.”
While waiting for the weather to improve, the experts went to other caves in Pinabacdao and Matuguinao, both Samar towns.
Still, Rivadossi says the adventure had been a fulfilling struggle “to pass through caves and enter into the vast world of nature’s magnificent phenomena!”
He explains that the team sought to see the unexplored side of the earth where no satellite or robot can ever do.
Passion, intrigue
“The cavers are not paid for their extraordinary curiosity. The intrigue on the magical possibilities and the search for new discoveries in the underground river (from the top to the spring) have become their passion for years,” Rivadossi says.
With the exploration, he adds, it is possible to make a deep investigation about the biology, hydrology or geology of the Calbiga Caves.
Mayor Melchor Nacario recently received word from American researchers from University of Texas that they wanted to study the complex in relation to climate change. They did not give details, however.
In studying climate change, some scientists are said to have explored caves to inspect stalagmites—known “archives” of the climate history dating back to tens of thousands years—in a particular area. The caves hold records that may give clues to climate change.
Stalagmites are formed as rainwater, mixed with calcium carbonate and other elements, makes its way through the ground and onto the cave floor, creating in time a column of rock.
Scientists would cut open the stalagmite, study its chemical content to determine the relative moisture of the climate at various periods in history, starting from the the oldest layers at the bottom to the present at the top.
If the American scientists push through with their plan, the Calbiga cave network may also tell what happened in the past in relation to the present.

Laoang is currently a second class municipality according to BLGF of the DOF. walang ibang agencia ang nagbibigay ng classification ng mga LGUs sa ating bansa. Pls check your source. Ang population ay kailanman hindi pa umabot sa 80,000. if you look at NCSO's records its population gradually increased from 47,000 in 1995 to 54,000 in 2000 to 56,000 in 2007
ormocanon June 4th, 2011, 03:02 AM Would like to ask about that big project multi-billion peso project in Catubig. I heard na ita-tap daw ang ilog into a huge irrigation system. Can someone please provide details, and if possible, photos? Thanks. :)

malaki pala rin ang population ng Laong I think kapantay lang sila ng population ng borongan, so it is the center of trade of the eastern part of northern samar, may mga banki ba doon?

matagal nang may plano ang mga banko ng magtayo sa Laoang kaso ang downtown nya ay nasa island mahirap ang pagtrranspo ng money from bank to bank kasi sasakay lang sa bankero very dangerous and could be an easy prey to bad elements of society. kaya walang commercial bank ang Laoang sa ngayon. Kung magagawan lang ng tulay ang Laoang its economy would surely soar to new heights.

Yup HCAAP project yon.

1995 ay tapos na ang 1991 na sunog sa laoang na lumamon ng brgy. baybay ang cbd ng laoang...almost 200 chinese businessmens go back to legaspi and sorsogon, brgy salvacion alone in 1980's has around 20,000 population before the crash of a german investor...laoang proper got 28,000 at that time, add those remaining 48 brgy that has more than 1,500 population of the smallest brgy and that was e.j. dulay or lanobe...laoang was once the biggest municipality of northern samar next to the biggest city of calbayog in samar island around 180,000 on 1980's...since the last fire of 199, laoang has plenty of empty spaces as seen and evidence near the pier and bangkerohan pier...
