Zoro, wala pang commercial flight jan sa Guiuan Airport eversince... pero meron ngayon jan mga private chartered flights especially for tourists going to Calicoan gamit yung small airplanes..

**During WWII, Guiuan was the hub of military activity both by the Allies and Axis forces. On the year 1944, by the American Forces (USAFFE), it became the biggest Naval depot in the whole of Asia...
Because of Guiuan’s strategic location, the airport became the place where the Enola Gay, the American Bomber airplane carrying "Fatboy" refuelled and bombed Hiroshima in Japanese crippling the Japanese Imperial Forces and in effect signalled the weakening of the Japanese Army.

The Guiuan airfield originally had two runways, but only one remains operational today.

If wikipedia is accurate, Tacloban's DZR is the longest (2,138 meters);
Guiuan Airport is only 2,094 meters.
Calbayog Airport - 1,476 meters
Ormoc Airport - 1,409 meters
Catarman Airport - 1,350 meters
Maasin Airport - 1200 meters
Catbalogan airport - 1200 meters

I think Wikipedia is not correct because the length of Calbayog Airport at present is already 1675 meters. And DOTC has already bidded out the concreting of additional 400 meters this year with 21M budget. Na-open na nila yung bids last February 17, 2009. FYI.:banana:

PGMA’S Super Region Projects in Eastern Visayas dominate the 2009 DPWH 8 Infra Program

By Philippine Information Agency (PIA 8)
March 10, 2009

TACLOBAN CITY – The 2009 DPWH Infrastructure Program is an indication that President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo is indeed serious in making the Super Region concept of development, a reality.

Most of the P60 Billion budget allocation for the DPWH Region 8, are for super region projects in the different provinces of Eastern Visayas. These projects include urgent national arterial, secondary roads and bridges; rehabilitation, reconstruction or upgrading of damaged paved national roads and foreign assisted projects.

Included in the urgent national arterial, secondary roads and bridges are roads to complete the President’s Eastern Nautical Highway, and improvement of access roads to Airports and RORO Ports.

Also included are roads addressing critical bottleneck, infrastructure support to tourism hubs and spokes; roads to support peace and development in Mindanao and other conflict areas, roads to address traffic congestion and continuation of unfinished and ongoing bridges.

President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo’s priority projects were observed to be included in the 2009 DPWH Infrastructure Program. These include the Himay-angan-Silago-Abuyo Boundary Road with P56 Million allocation; Taft-Oras-San Policarpo-Arteche Road with P29 Million allocation; Rehabilitation of Allen-Malaga Section with a funding of P250 Million; and the P345 Million funding for the concreting of the Palapag-Mapanas-Gamay-Lapinig Road, concreting of Laoang-Lapinig-Arteche Road and other projects that will connect Northern Samar to Eastern Samar, among others.

Also included are the foreign assisted projects like the rehabilitation of the Maharlika Highway from Calbayog to Tacloban; and Agas-Agas bridge among others.

The data taken from the Department of Public Works and Highways in Region 8 revealed that among the road projects to complete the Eastern Nautical Highway are the concrete paving of the 11.61 kilometers Biliran Circumferential Road with 9 sections namely, Mainit-Murang Section, Ariquin-Julita Section, Pawikan-Baso Section, Bilwang-Mapuyo Section, Baganito-Madao Section, Bool- Patag Section, Virginia- Marvel Section, Look-Habuhab Section and Guinapundan-Pinamihagan Section, with a funding of P209 Million.

Also in support to PGMA’s Eastern Nautical Highway, is the improvement of access road to RORO ports particularly to Naval Port and to Maripipi Port, with a P10 Million funding.

In the province of Leyte, P20 Million has been programmed for the improvement of access road of the Tacloban Airport. About P132 Million has been allocated for the improvement or concreting of Access Road to Ormoc City Airport and access road to Ormoc Port; roads to address critical bottleneck particularly road opening and construction of missing links of national road at the Albuera-Burauen Road including bridges at the Albuera Section; and the construction and completion of ongoing bridge project, the Tagaytay Bridge and approaches at Kananga.

Also included in the Roads to complete Eastern Nautical Highway projects in the Region is the P2.5 Million access road to Baybay Port in Baybay, Leyte; P50 Million rehabilitation of Daang Maharlika; the P23.8 Million concreting of Maasin Port, Access road to Maasin Port and access road to Liloan Port; and the P13.5 Million concreting of Guiuan Airport.

Furthermore, about P30 Million has been programmed for the Roads to Enhance Tourism particularly fo the concreting of Basey-Sohoton-Borongan Road leading to Basey Cave and National Park; while in Eastern Samar, P308 Million has been programmed for infrastructure support to tourism hubs and spokes from Borongan to Guiuan, particularly, the Borongan-MacArthur section with exceptions, and MacArthur-Guiuan Sections with exceptions.

The list of projects for the Region, is as long as the desire of President Arroyo to fast track the needed infrastructure support in order to align Eastern Visayas to the Central Visayas Super Region which is being envisioned to become the Tourism hub of the country.

PGMA "Serbisyo Muna" to host jobs fair in Maasin City (http://positivenewsmedia.net/am2/publish/Cities_And_Towns_23/PGMA_Serbisyo_Muna_to_host_jobs_fair_in_Maasin_City.shtml)

MAASIN CITY, Southern Leyte, March 12 (PNA) -- The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE), in coordination with the Philippine Overseas Employment Adminsitration (POEA), will be conducting a Local and Overseas Jobs Fair at the City Gymnasium here on Saturday, March 14.

The jobs fair starts at 8 A.M. until 5 P.M., according to Labor Officer Mario Tictic. This is in support to the People's Government Mobile Action (PGMA) Serbisyo Muna, one of the priority projects of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo to help the unemployed and diplaced workers land a job.

PGMA Serbisyo Muna, under the guidance of Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR), will cater to applicants who want to work overseas as well as for local employment.

Applicants are required to bring along their resume, training certificate, employment certificate, if any, college diploma, National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) clearance, passport for overseas applicants and other relevant employment documents, Tictic disclosed in an interview.

A Call Center Company (APAC) will also join the one-day jobs fair, hence, interested applicants as call center agents and human resource staff are invited to apply, Tictic said.

At least six employment agencies based in Tacloban City and two service centers for local employment have confirmed to participate in the jobs fair. They are the 10th Story Placement Agency Inc.; Mother's Way Employment Agency; New Era Placement Agency Inc.; Pacific Meditterenian Int'l Manpower Agency; Treasure of Hope Int'l and Unijobs Int'l Manpower Services Corp. for overseas employment.

For local employment, the participating agencies include APAC Customer Service Inc. and Leyte Academic Center.

Tictic said that the one-day affair will be also coordinated by the local government unit.
After Maasin City, the team will proceed to Northern Samar on March 19. (PNA)

The runway is also a park, lambingan lane, jogging lane, highway, etc.
I think this is the bad tradition of the Catarmanons. Nakasanayan na kasi nila to noon pa. :ohno:
The municipal government should stop or close this to the public for the security of the people and airport; for its improvement..
Why not create their own park or playground? Napakalawak ng Catarman, pwede silang maglagay sa kahit saan... Or the best way is they should transfer the airport to other place.

amazingly, i cant really imagine how the town was planned putting an airport in the middle of the downtown..

A highway intersects the airport para..kaya ganun..you cant blame people if they are looking for a shorter route goin to the other side which was divided by the airport..

One remedy is to relocate the airport..

magkano ba ang budget ng isang airport at isang magarbong park..i think u should not have to equate both coz theyre different..well thats ur own opinion..the better is to have pass a resolution prohibiting the public of any use of the runway(of course except for the real purpose:lol::lol:tugpahanan hin idro:lol::lol:)..good to have to create a beautiful and spacious park for public use, diba?....

It would be better that they should relocate the airport to another area since catarman has still vast undeveloped areas. The runway should just be converted into a bouvelard or a major arterial road. They should think forward cz who knows Catarman might expand and become a major metropolitan in the near future.

siguro in the near future that would be nicer..as of now, parang hindi pa gaanong bigat ang air traffic sa catarman..with that case, the local government should have make an ordinance punishing people who trespass or even sa paggiba ng mga fence sa airport..ano ba naman sila:ohno:, thats a public property....:)

Two alleged NPA rebels dead, soldier hurt in Samar clash
Agence France-Presse | 03/15/2009 4:43 PM

Two leftist guerrillas have been shot dead and a soldier wounded in an armed clash in Samar island, the military said Sunday.

Government forces retrieved the bodies of two New People's Army (NPA) gunmen and four rifles after the gunfight near Calbayog City on Samar island on Saturday, a military statement said.

The 5,200-member NPA has been waging a Maoist guerrilla campaign for 40 years.

By Ninfa B Quirante (http://www.pia.gov.ph/default.asp?m=12&r=&y=&mo=&fi=p090315.htm&no=02)

Catbalogan City (March 15) -- This quaint island town of Zumarraga celebrated its 146th founding anniversary yesterday through grandiose activities.

Presidential Assistant for Eastern Visayas Cynthia Nierras with the Department of Health (DOH) Regional 08 Director Edgardo Gonzaga, Assistant Division Commander of the 8th Infantry Division (8th ID) Col. Eduardo Del Rosario, Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO) Ms Zeny Delantar were some of the guests spotted by PIA.

Also present were Vice Governor Jesus B Redaja who sat at the Presidential Table hosted by Mayor Neil Edwin Figueroa with his parents former Mayor Neliptha Figueroa and former Congressman Catalino Figueroa.

According to the program distributed to the media that covered the festivities, the week-end affair ushered an agro-trade fair on March 2; inter-agency sports tournament on Marrch 4; Karatada han Samar symposium on Teen age Reproductive Health and Search for Mutya ng Zumarraga.

A medical-dental Outreach Program also took place on March 9; Environment Day on March 10, 2009 that featured solid waste recycled products: Senior Citizens Day on March 11 and marathon and boxing on March 12, 2009.

If the week was loaded with several activities, this culminated in a more grandeur festivities which heralded the festivitals of the municipality.

Despite the unholy hours, guests forego their lunch until two PM in favor of the dancers who gyrated and swayed to the raucous beatings of improvised bamboo instruments and drums.

The dancers wore colorful costumes and paraphernalia symbolic of their celebration. The crowd that witnessed the event spilled the gymnasium.

A bit of the town's history

Based on accounts, the town on March 13, 1863 became an independent parish by a virtue of a decree from the King of Spain.

Originally, the town before the Spaniards came was called Kawayan, as bamboos teemed the island then. In 1848, a Spanish friar set foot on the place. This Spaniard discovered that the locals have organized a local governing body and obeyed the rules in the village. The place was then called BUAD, derived from the local dialect, Binuwaran, a term used to mean the diggings made by wild pigs. A group of dancers depicted the Binuwaran festival where dancers don pighead costumes and danced like pigs do.

Zumarraga, got its name from the birthplace of the Spanish priest assigned in the town, Rev Fr. Martin Yepes, who was born in Zumarraga, Spain.

Past forward to the present

Presently, Mayor Neil Edwin Figueroa, a young blood is trying to propel Zumarraga into new heights by welcoming programs and projects that could help its citizenry like the Department of Health (DOH) which provided for boxes of medicines for the operation of two Botika ng Barangay in Magaan and Tubigan barangays.

DOH also cited Figueroa for his support to the program.

In her speech, Nierras urged the townsfolk to do something to revive the glorious days when Zumarraga supplied Tacloban City with its fish consumption. Zumarraga as an island prides itself with its rich aquamarine resources.

Its One-Town-One –Product as assisted by DTI, NEDA, DOLE, SSU and other agencies is rock oyster fermentation (locally known as sisi). This has given Zumarraganhons livelihood.

Culture of rock oyster is also propagated in the island.

And a toast to the future

With the promise of close partnership of PA for E Visayas Madam Nierras and Zumarraga's youthful leaders Mayor Fiegueroa and Vice Mayor Emeliano Hernando, Jr. additional programs to address and strengthen the educational, health, nutrition and other basic services in this beautiful kingdom by the bay could just be the order of the day! EXPENSIVE and lifeless.
These are just a few of the false impressions about modern and contemporary architecture, according to young architect and developer, Buck Richnold I. Sia. As a staunch advocate of “modern” design, he is determined to rectify such myths.
Panagbenga 2009 blog
There is no better way doing that operation than through what architects refer to as their “living billboards”: their own projects. One of Arch’t. Sia’s creations is a two-storey house, which he completed last year. It has a total floor area of 155 square meters aand is built on a 146-square-meter lot in a subdivision in Mandaue City. This shelter redresses modernism’s initial delusions.
“Construction cost is relatively based on technique and material specifications and not with the style. We employed efficient construction techniques and we chose materials that were truly fitting for the space, as long as quality was not compromised. Also, we believe the space we have designed speaks a lot of how we maximized wgat the tropical climate gives. It radiates a lot of sunlight and cross ventilation so the space is comfortable to live,” says Sia, who is also the principal architect and managing director of Zscape Development Corporation.
More than just being “well planned and designed”, the house looks spacious than it actually is considering the lot size limitation. Dynamism is achieved through uniquely juxtaposed angles and edges. This dynamism is best experienced inside, according to the architect. And there’s the cantilevered stair tread, which would surely be an interesting “conversation starter.”
Apart from collaborating with up-and-coming Cebuano architects, Michael Litang and Arbet Cadayona, in this project, Sia says that what makes this house “Filipino” is its habituation to existing natural conditions.
“We have always looked into the adaptability of the house to the local climate. That is very important in designing a house, modern or not, to maximize the strengths and minimize the weaknesses of our climate,” he said.
The house proves that excellent modern and contemporary architecture can be achieved even with a minimal budget. And there is an ageless appeal to this style. Moreover, its intangible qualities can suit best the needs of its local-based user and adapt perfectly to current site and climatic conditions. Expensive and lifeless? The reasons are gripping enough to make a second thought.

Going to Biliran is just 45 mins to an hour drive. That is if you use your own car. Never been there but my father's been there many times. I've heard and seen on tv (TripNaTrip ABS-CBN) about Biliran. Definitely woth visiting. Accommodations are not that pricey so why go somewhere else. Lets just help our own region boost its tourism industry.

Hello peepz, I'm a newbie here.:wave:I was surprised and pleased to learn from this forum na meron na palang malls sa Catbalogan and Borongan. I'm just wondering bakit wala pa sa Calbayog. Nakapunta ako sa Calbayog late last year and it is a bustling city. It has 2 branches of Mercury Drug samantalang kami dito sa Ormoc 1 pa lang. It has also wider streets than our city. IMHO mas deserving ang Calbayog na magka-mall. Of course deserving din ang Catbalogan and Borongan pero mas unang naging city ang Calbayog at mas marami pang tao kaya nagtataka ako bakit wala pa siyang mall.:)

That is also my query. i dont know why...
Kahit isang Gaisano Department Store lang...
Better kung mall...
Meron na ding mga foreigners na nandyan sa Calbayog...

May mall sa Catbalogan? I think Centro is just a department store. The last time i went to Catbalogan wala pa yung centro na yan. hehehehe

Calbayog deserves to have a mall since its the 3rd most populous city in EV at malaki yung potential
