In my opinion, Borongan, now being a city could also claim as City of Waterfalls because it has more or less ten (10) waterfalls within its territory and most of it are easily accessible.

marami talagang waterfalls dito sa Samar, but take note @catar that Calbayog was "OFFICIALLY DUBBED BY THE DOT" as the "City of Waterfalls", but still, other cities are claiming that they are the City of Waterfalls, marami ang mga waterfalls dito sa Calbayog na hindi pa discovered, kasi a large portion of the city is part of an all jungle land called Himalandrog, in that area maraming waterfalls, yung problema lang ay hindi accessible ang area na iyon

Yups! I know that and I do not contest that. sinasabi ko lang na yong ibang cities ay may karapatan din na tawaging City of Waterfalls yong lugar nila kasi karapatdapat naman. Hindi naman pwde imonopolize ng isang lugar lang unless kong sila lang talaga ang qualified na tawagin. Maari tama ka rin na maaring maraming falls sa Himalandrog na yan pero the fact is, undiscovered pa sila at mahirap abutin. Paano mo naman maka count yon kung ni picture at pangalan ay di pa naitatala ng city government. Kahit nga yong isang magandang falls dyan na Tarangban Falls sinasabi ng mga taga Calbayog sa Facebook na mahirap daw abutan, mga almost 3 hrs pa ang lalakarin kaya yong iba natatakot pumunta roon. Seguro dapat gumawa ng paraan ang City government para mapuntawan ng mga tao ng matiwasay ang mga falls na ito and in order to live by its name as the City of Waterfalls. At ito naman ang siansabi ko about Borongan, maaring marami din ang hindi nadidiscover, pero yong mga napuntahan ng tao katulad ng mga na post dito ni borongan, mga more or less ten (10) yon. At karamihan sa kanila ayon sa web ay madali lang puntahan at magaganda rin katulad nung sa Calbayog. Meron pan ngang isang falls na sa gilid lang ng river. Kaya sinasabi ko na may karapatan din ang Borongan na sabihing City of Waterfalls dahil city na sila ngayon at maraming magagandang falls na napupuntahan ng mga tao.

Catarman relocation urged

PALO, Leyte, Philippines — The Mines and Geo-Sciences Bureau (MGB) said on Monday that residents in landslideand flood-prone areas in Catarman, Northern Samar, have long been advised to relocate as they are in danger of being wiped out in the event of heavy rains in the future.

MGB Region 8 Director Roger de Dios said there have been identified landslide-prone areas and floodprone communities in Catarman in their office’s recent survey.

De Dios said the MGB-8 survey team that conducted the geohazard assessment and geologic mapping found out that 11 of the 23 communities surveyed were prone or vulnerable to landslides “due to steep slopes, weak rock formations and past landslide incidents.”

He identified the 11 communities as Cag-abaca, Cal-igang, Doña Pulqueria, Imelda, Macagtas, McKinley, New Rizal, Tinowaran, slope regions of UEP Zone 1, Sitio Norsarc of UEP Zone 3, and Washington.

De Dios said the team also found that almost all of these 23 barangays are prone to flooding that may last up to three days with water possibly going up the height of 1.5 meters.

PALO, Leyte, Philippines — The Mines and Geo-Sciences Bureau (MGB) said on Monday that residents in landslideand flood-prone areas in Catarman, Northern Samar, have long been advised to relocate as they are in danger of being wiped out in the event of heavy rains in the future.

MGB Region 8 Director Roger de Dios said there have been identified landslide-prone areas and floodprone communities in Catarman in their office’s recent survey.

De Dios said the MGB-8 survey team that conducted the geohazard assessment and geologic mapping found out that 11 of the 23 communities surveyed were prone or vulnerable to landslides “due to steep slopes, weak rock formations and past landslide incidents.”

He identified the 11 communities as Cag-abaca, Cal-igang, Doña Pulqueria, Imelda, Macagtas, McKinley, New Rizal, Tinowaran, slope regions of UEP Zone 1, Sitio Norsarc of UEP Zone 3, and Washington.

De Dios said the team also found that almost all of these 23 barangays are prone to flooding that may last up to three days with water possibly going up the height of 1.5 meters.

Iloilo ships 36,000 bags of rice to Northern Samar, 2 cities





ILOILO CITY, Jan. 3 (PNA) – The rice sufficient province of Iloilo through the National Food Authority (NFA) has shipped 36,350 bags of rice, which is part of its surplus production last year, to the province of Northern Samar and the cities of Catbalogan and Calbayog.

NFA Iloilo Assistant Manager Miguel Aguirre said that they transported the rice in order to help meet the deficiency in the consumption of the people in these areas beginning of this year. The rice worth more than P65 million was shipped on board MV Cristina 5 on January 1.

“They needed our assistance because of the rice deficiency in Northern Samar and Catbalogan and Calbayog cities so we transported the rice,” Aguirre contended.

Aguirre said that in fact the NFA Iloilo continues to mill rice so to be transported to other provinces and cities that have made a request.

December of last year, the NFA also transported rice to Tacloban which was also experiencing rice insufficiency. (PNA)

In a statement, Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Undersecretary Cristino Panlilio said those areas are “endowed with white beaches and natural attractions that could endear tourists.”

“By bringing in tourism investments in those areas, we would be able to alleviate poverty in those areas,” Panlilio said.

He cited the province of Aklan that used to be poor. But with Boracay Island, the province has become one of the prime tourist destinations of the country.

For Eastern Samar, Panlilio cited the Calicoan Island, a white beach and a surfing destination that is part of the historical town of Guiuan. The island is a strong tourism attraction because of its natural beauty.

Guiuan town has an idle American-built airport that can accommodate planes to land in.

At present, Eastern Samar can be accessed by a two-hour ride from Tacloban City airport. But there is not enough accommodation in the province.

Panlilio said that for regular flights to come to Eastern Samar, it must have 500 available rooms for visitors. It was learned there are only 100 rooms available in that province.

For eastern Leyte, the DTI is confident the area would become a prime tourist destination.

The eastern part of the province has a modest number of accommodations particularly located in Tacloban City, the regional capital. (REYAN L. ARINTO)

Matagal na nila ito dapat ginawa. Why only now? The beaches and the natural attractions have always been there. Hindi naman sumulpot ang mga ito ngayon lang. Had they acted years ago, siguro as of this time progressive na ang part na yan ng Samar. The people would have long been reaping the benefits from efforts like this.

Borongan City Council approves P400M budget for 2012

BORONGAN CITY, Eastern Samar, Jan 17(PIA) -- The Sangguniang Panglunsod (SP) of the newly converted city of Borongan has recently approved its 2012 budget of P412.7 million.

Report revealed that of the total, P27.7 million goes to the office of city mayor, Ma. Fe Abunda for her Barangay Development Programs.

Earlier, the city mayor mentioned, among others, that she will focus on the construction and rehabilitation of flood control projects in some barangays, even those in the poblacion.

“Thanks to our new Internal Revenue Allotment (IRA), this time, I can implement more improvement projects for the place,” the mayor said.

The new IRA will also facilitate the appointment of the newly created chiefs of offices for: City Environment and Natural Resources Office, Information Office, General Services Office, Office of the Veterinarian, Cooperative and Development Officer, Population Officer etc.

The budget will go to the following: road widening - P5 million; improvement of public market - P4 million; improvement of Hamorawon Park - P5 million; purchase of new vehicle - P2.5 million; construction of covered court - P2 million, health centers - P1 million, drainages - P15 million, and day care centers - P2 million.(PIA-Eastern Samar/aenicart)

Wow ang laki. Yan ang nagagawa ng pagiging city. Tiyak na marami ang development ang Borongan at Catbalogan in the years to come. Tiyak din na mapagiiwanan ang Catarman sa m ga urban centers in terms of Public Infra development.

Eh ako nga na taga-Norte na, natakot na ako magbiyahe ngayon dun. Dati, mag-isa akong bumibiyahe dyan. How can we encourage people from outside Northern Samar kung hindi natin ito ma-address?
