The capitol building is not yet completed. The 3-storey structure which is supposed to be the center, is at the back of the facade as posted by "ptfndr". Some more 2-storey structures similar to the facade (front) will be constructed at its back to form a quadrangle. The third floor of the 3-storey buildg is the Ibabao Hall. Miss EVRAA competition was held there last year. The capitol is state -of-the-art and the most modern in the whole of Samar island.:cheers:

^^ hi Catar city, do you have any news if there will be an upgrade of the terminal building and runway of Catarman airport? because 3 airlines are operating now in this airport and nagsisiksikan ang mga pasahero kung halos magkasabay ang time ng arrival at departure ng airlines sa airport..... and also should this airport be totally closed to the public because until now ginagawa syang pasyalan ng mga tao during afternoon or night...
sinasabi ng iba dahil umaga lang daw dumadating ang mga aircraft, paano kung magkaroon ng afternoon flight jan?

April 6th, 2009, 11:18 PM
^^Nope. I don't have any idea of a fortcoming expansion of the runway and renovation of the Catarman Terminal Building beaucse that's the concern of the national government. Ang pagkakaalam ang DOTC ang may responsibility diyan thru ATO. The best the LGUs can do is to make proper representation and constant follow up.

TACLOBAN CITY, Philippines – A radio reporter was killed when a 10-wheeler truck hit the passenger van she was riding early Tuesday morning in Samar province.

Bernadette Acedera of Manila Broadcasting Corp.’s dySM in Catarman, Northern Samar, died immediately. She was the lone fatality.

Acedera, 29, who was from Mondragon town, Northern Samar, was reportedly pregnant. She was on her way to Tacloban City to visit her husband when the accident happened in Barangay (Village) Pahug, Pinabacdao, Samar.

Senior Inspector Severino Solis, Pinabacdao police chief, said the passenger van Acedera was riding was crossing a one-lane road in Pahug village between 12 midnight and 1 a.m. when it was rammed by the ten-wheeler truck owned by a Tacloban City ice plant and driven by Nestor Calves.

The van, driven by Reconsider Molino, had six passengers and left Catarman around 8 p.m. Monday.

"The fatality was seated at the front seat and it took us some time before we were able to carry her body outside the vehicle," Solis said in a phone interview Tuesday.

A still unidentified male passenger of the van sustained serious leg injuries and was brought to an undisclosed hospital in Tacloban City.

The other passengers of the van, who sustained minor injuries, were identified as Elmer Pasha, Jerome Bang, Jeanette Dancer and Rachel Unmade. The driver of the van was able to jump out of the vehicle when the accident happened, Solis said.

Calves, the truck driver, who is detained at the Pinabacdao police station, will be charged with reckless imprudence resulting in homicide, physical injuries and damage to property, Solis said.

Bobon Beach Resort (BBR). Brgy Dancalan, Bobon, N. Samar 8 kms away from the Capital. This caters mostly to foreign tourist. Mahal daw dito yung Malacanang Suite nila costs P3,000.00. Doon ka na lang sa katabing Villa Alabado, mura lang.

This is a retirement village for foreigners at Brgy Magsaysay, Bobon. They call it an international community. Maramin na daw sila dito and they prefer to stay at "Bahay Kubos." No wonder - a foreigner driving a car or motorcycle and lining up at ATM machines at downtime catarman or even at NORSAMELCO paying electric bills, is often seen.

Looming at the background is the historic Mountain- Mt. Bubuyaon. Due to its distinct shape , the spaniards called it as "Palapag Mesa" or "Mesa de Palapag". But the locals viewed it differently. To them it looks like an iverted banca, that's why it is sometimes called as "Nabaluto". According to history, the mountain was made as a refuge to the local hero, Juan Ponce Sumoroy and his group, from foreign invaders. Today the place is reportedly made as a refuge to armed forces against the government. The mountain has a wide plateau on top and is located in betwen four municipalities - Palapag, Mapanas, Catubig and Laoang. It has one and the same shape when viewed from all four corners. That's why it is thought that the area of the palteau on top is circular. According to some DENR people, the palce has a great potential for tourism industry and just waiting to be explored. It has some caves, falls, springs and lagoons aside from its thick rain forest.

The unseen 'beauties' of Northern Samar
FUNFARE By Ricardo F. Lo Updated March 30, 2009 12:00 AM

Full many a flower is born to blush unseen.

So wrote Thomas Gray in Elegy Written On A Country Churchyard.

Unlike Gray’s flowers, the “beauties” of my home province, Northern Samar, won’t “blush unseen” for long. Slowly but surely, local — and, soon hopefully, foreign — tourists are starting to appreciate my province’s rich natural resources that consist of old churches, virgin beaches, refreshing (rustic) scenery, historic bridges and other natural attractions thankfully featured in the province’s 2009-2010 calendar distributed by the Provincial Tourism Office in Catarman town.

Travel leisurely by land (roads in Northern Samar are well-paved), you can catch glimpses of Warays weaving colorful tikog mats; or selling dried fish, pili candies, piniato sweets, pinangat and other mouth-watering delicacies.

Northern Samar is “Kuratsa Land” as its governor, Raul Daza, aptly puts it, referring to the courtship dance usually performed by newly-weds at the reception, allowing friends and relatives to pin bills on the bride’s gown and the groom’s Barong Tagalog.

Here are the province’s 24 towns and some of their attractions:

• Allen (mayor: Laureana D. Suan): Balwharteco (the port area), the Nikit Festival and the Wayang Wayang Resort;

• Biri (mayor: Jaime S. Garcia): The Biri Rock Formation (backdrop of Regal movie Ikaw ang Lahat sa Akin starring Richard Gomez and Maricel Laxa);

• Bobon (mayor: Benjamin L. Jao): Old Colgante Bridge, Lulugayan Falls and Holy Name of Jesus Parish Church;

• Capul (mayor: Ignacio V. Cascano Sr.): a 16th century church, Capul Lighthouse, Abak Beach and Moro Poro Islet;

• Catarman (mayor: Alita E. Rosales): Macagtas Dam, Our Lady of Anunciation Church, White Beach and the University of Eastern Philippines campus;

• Catubig (mayor: Ma. Cristina Ladio-Vicencio): 18th century church (nearby is the Battle of Catubig Marker) and Sakay-Sakay fluvial parade;

• Gamay (mayor: Timoteo T. Capoquian Jr., M.D.): Gapo Beach, Matikawal Falls, Bag-ot Falls and Canawayan Beach;

• Laoang (mayor: Madeleine M. Ong): Onay Beach, the old St. Michael Church and aerial view from the Batag and Solar Lighthouses;

• Lapinig (mayor: Romualdo D. Menzon): Canawayan Beach, an old lighthouse and fisherfolk with their rich harvest;

• Las Navas (mayor: Arlito A. Tan): Pinipisakan Falls, Sakay-Sakay fluvial parade (in honor of the Sto. Niño) and the Ginagatusan Falls;

• Lavezares (mayor: Quintin B. Saludaga): Nuestra Señora de Salvacion Marine Park, Rapac Beach, Shrine of the Risen Christ and the Talutang Festival;

• Lope de Vega (mayor: Erlinda P. Cinco): Abaca plants (and stripped abaca fiber), coconut plantation and other greeneries;

• Mapanas (mayor: Felipe L. Laodenio): Mayong-Payong Beach, Sulop Lake and Maylemon Lake;

• Mondragon (mayor: Ismael C. Bugna Jr.): Malobaroc Beach Resort and St. Claire Monastery;

• Palapag (mayor: Ricardo M. Daiz): Rakit Dakit Rocks, Bangkulis Festival at Talolora Beach, old church bell and old church ruins, and the Sumuroy Wharf (where the Sumuroy Monument is);

• Pambujan (mayor: Rogelio S. Tan): Caohagan Island, the old Pambujan Church and Paninirongan Beach;

• Rosario (mayor: Basilio L. Miranda Jr.): Verdant rice fields, hot springs and the town’s famous crabs;

• San Antonio (mayor: Renato R. Collamar): Lagbangan Lake, the beaches, Manoglaya Festival and the caves;

• San Isidro (mayor: Conrado G. Avila Sr.): Canauayon Island, Bukana Falls and Busay Falls;

• San Jose (mayor: Damian T. Luzon Jr.): Mangrove plantation and the Pangilala Island;

• San Roque (mayor: Andre L. Avalon): San Roque Beach, Bangon Falls and Malarag Falls;

• San Vicente (mayor: Franco B . Francisco): Pink Beach, Panagat Festival, Sila Island, Mahaba Beach and Island Cave;

• Silvino Lobos (mayor: Edmund S. Gillamac): St. Isidore the Farmer Mission Center and the Amphitheater;

• Victoria (mayor: Nicolas C. Purog Jr.): Spice of Life Beach, Mawo Steel Bridge, Budoy Falls, Candominga Cave and San Abner Falls.

Better still, instead of just looking at the pictures, visit the province.

By RG Cadavos

Maasin City, Southern Leyte -- At least 35 delegates from Maasin City left here to attend the 6th National Rover Moot to be held at the Boy Scouts of the Philippines (BSP) Camp Samal, Tumauini, Isabela on April 14-19, 2009, Maasin City staff Zaldy Olita reported this morning.

It was learned that the said event is expected to be participated in by more than 5,000 rovers, roverettes, scout officials and local government officials representing the 10 scouting regions and the BSP Local Councils throughout the country.

Maasin City sent scouters 15 years old and above mostly Sangguniang Kabataan members to include SK Federation Presdient Ronalyn Epiz with City Mayor Maloney Samco, selected department heads and city officials.

The week-long activity with the theme “Scouting: Creating a Better World” aims to improve leadership skills and ability to work as a team, and teach them to appreciate the cultural and historical heritage of the host province. It will also prepare the participants in performing services needed by the provinces, municipalities and barangays and learn them to practice daily good turns to instill a sense of social responsibility among rover scouts.

Meanwhile, Olita quoted Mayor Samaco who presented Maasin City to host the next National Rover Moot to be held in Sitio Danao, Barangay Malapoc Norte here, where the Regional Boy Scouts Jamborette was held last year. Series of preparation are still on-going to qualify to be the host city, it was learned.

DPWH speeds up completion of Calbayog-Gatanguit Road Project
By Philippine Information Agency (PIA 8)
April 8, 2009

TACLOBAN CITY – The Department of Public Works and Highways in Region 8 is fast tracking the completion of the Calbayog-Gatanguit Road, a report at the DPWH website stated.

The project which is part of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo’s SONA commitment is aimed at rehabilitating and improving the economy of Calbayog City and the other municipalities in Samar province.

It would be recalled that President Arroyo is determined to fulfill her SONA commitments before her term ends in 2010.

The project consists of improvement and widening of road; upgrading and widening road tracks and shoulders; building better drainage facilities and slope protection; and building road safety devices alongside the existing 52.7 kms road, along Maharlika Highway.

The road project also includes replacement of two (2) bridges and rehabilitation of thirteen (13) more bridges located along the Calbayog-Gatanguit road section.

The Calbayog-Gatanguit Road Section is under Package III of the Arterial Road Link Development Project and entails the improvement and upgrading of about 52.7 kilometers of existing road. The project, Director Angelito Twano informed started in November of 2006 and is scheduled to be completed by August of 2009.

Considering that Samar is located in the country’s typhoon belt and runs along the route being passed by commuters from Luzon to Mindanao and vice versa, the road network is constantly subjected to destruction, and deterioration of roadways and shoulders, thus, the DPWH took immediate actions in rehabilitating and improving the road section.

DPWH Secretary Hermogenes E. Ebdane Jr. said that taking immediate actions are necessary in improving the national road net. He also added that the DPWH does not only rehabilitate or reconstruct roads immediately but also continue producing new, lasting, safe and efficient roads and bridges to be more convenient.

Arroyo to inaugurate nautical highway's eastern seaboard route
04/14/2009 | 11:00 PM

MANILA, Philippines - President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo will inaugurate Wednesday the enhanced leg of the oldest roll-on/roll-off (RORO) route of the 919-kilometer land and 137-nautical mile (sea) Strong Republic National Highway (SRNH) Eastern Seaboard trunkline.

A Malacañang statement said President Arroyo would also inaugurate other ports and road components connecting the Strong Republic Nautical Highway (SRNH) Eastern Seaboard line.

The new Eastern Seaboard route starts from Pilar, Sorsogon and runs through Masbate City and Esperanza town in Masbate in Bicol.

It then traverses Naval and Maripipi towns both in Biliran, San Ricardo in Southern Leyte and finally ends in Lipata, Surigao City in Surigao del Norte.

The old route that forms part of the Maharlika Highway, also known as the Pan-Pacific National Highway, was constructed during the time of then President Ferdinand Marcos.

It is the oldest among the Ro-Ro highways that first connected Luzon to the Visayas and Mindanao. It starts from Matnog in Sorsogon and passes through Allen and Dapdap in Northern Samar, Liloan in Leyte and Lipata in Surigao.

The Maharlika Highway link is to be further enhanced with the launch of the new Eastern Nautical Highway as it will further spur trade and commerce between and among the islands not covered by the old Maharlika Highway.

On Wednesday, President Arroyo would board a RORO ferry at the Lipata Port in Surigao City (Surigao del Norte) to San Ricardo, Southern Leyte. The sea trip will take about two hours.

While on board the RORO vessel, the regional two-on-one media interview with Mrs. Arroyo will take place, with the theme "Infrastructure Projects in Full Swing."

Upon arrival at the San Ricardo RORO Port in Barangay Benit, President Arroyo will inaugurate the P420-million San Ricardo Ro-Ro Port Development Project. She will then take the inaugural drive-thru of the port road link from San Ricardo to Liloan.

After that, she and the Ro-Ro caravan will then motor to Tacloban City via the Sogo-Mahaplag-Abuyog Road and will pass by the on-going construction of the P870-million Agas-Agas Viaduct Project in Sogod, Southern Leyte.

Pier 1 of the viaduct or bridge is nearing completion. It is about 70 meters in height with 17 leaps, each leap measuring 4.5 meters high. The second pier of the bridge is 50 percent completed.

The RORO caravan will then proceed to the Leyte Provincial Capitol front road inauguration.

President Arroyo will inaugurate the newly-completed Naval Port Development Project in Biliran Province. The P9.9-million Naval Port Development Project includes a Ro-Ro ramp and a new passenger terminal building.

She will then send off the RORO vessel for the two-hour trip to Masbate. She said the SRNH further enhances public access to various tourism areas throughout the country and offers an alternate and cheaper route for transporting goods from Mindanao to Luzon. - GMANews.TV

surigao is only a second class city but the income it has generated for the past three years is more than what the first class city has required. it even applied for a HUC status but the plan was never endorsed by the district representative bec. of its population problem.

New Southern Leyte port to spur tourism, economy
By NESTOR L. ABREMATEA
April 17, 2009, 5:36pm

Barangay Benit, San Ricardo, Southern Leyte -- Southern Leyte Rep. Roger G. Mercado said the opening of the newly completed Ro-Ro port in San Ricardo, Southern Leyte will be a great help in pushing tourism and the economic development of the region.

The lawmaker and Southern Leyte Gov. Damian G. Mercado led local officials in welcoming President Arroyo to the formal opening of the P71 million port here that will cut travel time to Mindanao.

"This new Ro-Ro (roll on, roll off) port will cut short the travel time by sea to Lipata in Surigao City by three hours as the travel time now is only more than one hour compared to the Liloan port that we used to do before," Rep. Mercado said.

He lauded President Arroyo for helping fund the port project as part of the Nautical Highway to help the public and traders transport their goods to other parts of the Visayas and Luzon.

Mrs. Arroyo formally opened the port by boarding a passenger vessel Wednesday that docked from Surigao City accompanied by Surigao Rep. Francisco Matugas, DOTC Secretary Leandro Mendoza, DTI Secretary Peter Favila, DPWH Secretary Hermogenes Ebdane Jr., and LTRFB Chairman Alberto Suansing.

Mercado said the Liloan port, which used to be entry point to Southern Leyte, will not be abandoned and will still be used by cargo vessels.

The new Ro-Ro port can also provide shorter travel time to Bohol and Camiguin islands, Mercado added.

Hello Catbalogan & Calbayog!

Recently my friend and I went to Catbalogan City. Just for the smoke belching test. Isa nalang kasi yung dito sa Tacloban kaya cars are piling up. So my friend decided to have the test at Catbalogan nalang. And since di pako nakka punta jan, sinama na nya ako.

Well, it was my 1st time there in Catbalogan City. 1st kong nakita is yung aerial view ng city, since parang nasa mataas na part yung entrance to city proper. After hours of rural scenery 1st impression ko is. Wow! Civilization! It’s just like Tacloban from above. And when we got to the city itself, nakita ko yung Provincial Capitol nila. Same as Leyte din, but a bit smaller.

Since I have this urge of knowing the city, I’ve decided na mag libot2 sa downtown area alone. Well, it’s just like downtown Tacloban as well. Pro I got this impression na para siyang malaking merkado. Tri-nay ko din sumakay ng pedicab. Cute kasi pedicab nila dun. Mind you! Maggaling mag maneuver yung mga pedicab drivers nila dun! pinontahan ko din yung central mall. And nag lunch kami sa isang resto. The food was nice. I forgot the name nga lang.

Over all experience was nice! Hope to be back soon and see more developments.

Umasenso tayo Eastern Visayas!:)

Biliran PNP brings policemen closer to the people
By Lanie Pitao-Tupaz

Naval, Biliran (17 April) -- PPSupt. Leonardo Cesneros who took the Biliran Police Provincial Office command in January this year fulfilled his promise of bringing the policemen closer to the people in order to encourage them to report criminalities in the community and consequently maintain peace and order in the area.

In a radio interview with PIA Biliran staff over Radyo Natin Naval yesterday (April 16), it was learned that the PNP Provincial Office had already launched the "Friends of Biliran" program where policemen during their vacant times are encouraged the make visitations in the community such as the parish priests, church organizations, and schools.

Policemen also act as parateachers in school in their "Teacher ko, Pulis ko" program.

In this program, policemen take the place of teachers who go on leave of absence so that children of school age learn to be comfortable with and trust the police.

Col. Cesneros is also implementing the Barangay Peacekeeping Operations under LOI Kabisig to empower the people in maintaining peace and order in their community.

Barely three months since his assumption to the Biliran Police Provincial Command, Col. Cesneros reported 100 positive operations in the entire province of Biliran which involved 39 apprehensions of illegal fishing; 30 apprehensions of illegal gambling; 4 apprehensions of illegal drugs; 5 apprehensions of loose firearms; 8 apprehensions of illegal logging; and 14 arrests of wanted persons.

To avoid being implicated in a difficult situation later, Col. Cesneros advised the people who are currently involved in illegal activities to stop while they are still free and be spared from being convicted.

To the police force, Col. Cesneros reminded his men to respect the "PNP Badge of Honor" which stands for honor, justice, and service. (PIA Biliran)

Feature: Coconut industry, least affected by global crisis, faces different challenge (http://www.pia.gov.ph/?m=12&r=&y=&mo=&fi=p090423.htm&no=68)
By Erna S. Gorne

Southern Leyte -- The global economic crunch may have shaken also the agricultural production in Eastern Visayas region particularly the coconut industry yet manageable, Department of Labor and Employment Regional Director Forter Puguon disclosed in an interview held.

Director Puguon said that the effects of the global financial crisis on SC Global Coco Products, the leading coconut oil mill in the region which is based in Baybay, Leyte, may not push for the company to retrench its 22 - personnel, however, takes its toll on lowering their coco oil production.

According to their report to DOLE 8, since there were no more subsequent orders for coco oil from the direct buyers of United States, a major market, so far, forced them to lower their production.

The coco oil company then eventually resorted to the reduction of their working hours instead of laying off their workers, Director Puguon reported.

However, the coconut industry, by and large before the global financial crisis, was facing another challenge when prices of copra trend is usually sliding downwards. That major copra products - buying countries like China, among others, may take probable moves to shift to other sources of oil such as palm oil, Puguon added.

DOLE distributes medical kits to nurses under Project NARS (http://www.pia.gov.ph/?m=12&r=&y=&mo=&fi=p090423.htm&no=67)
By Erna S. Gorne

Southern Leyte -- The 50 nurse–trainees employed with Project Nurses Assigned in Rural Service (NARS) in the province each received medical kit to equip and enhance effectiveness in their services from the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) Regional Director Forter Puguon in time with his recent provincial visit here.

Director Puguon disclosed that each nurse-trainee was given medical kit containing (2) pcs peritional forceps, (1) pair surgical scissors, (2) pcs digital thermometer, (1) pc flashlight, (1) pc penlight (5) pcs cord clamps, (6) pair sterile gloves and (25) pcs tongue depressors.

The province of Southern Leyte is a beneficiary to Project NARS being considered among the 1,000 poorest municipalities in the country according to the Department of Health recommendations. In Region 8, the project qualified 115 municipalities with 10 poorest municipalities identified in Southern Leyte, Director Puguon said.

The 50 newly graduated and licensed nurses employed by the national government shall be receive Php 8,000.00 stipend every month from the Department of Labor and Employment, however, they have to work closely with Department of Health and the local government units they were assigned. Five nurses were deployed in each municipality.

Project NARS have two batches, with 6 months in each batch and 5 nurses in every municipality, and the status of employment is contractual, it was learned. The qualifiers will work in the assigned hospitals such as the Salvacion Oppus Yniguez Memorial Hospital, Pintuyan District Hospital and Liloan District Hospital for three months while the remaining three months will be assigned at the Rural Health Units, it was learned.

The new project, NARS was launched by Pres. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo last February 9, 2009, as part of the pump priming strategies under the Economic Resiliency Plan of the government to mitigate the inexperienced nurses and increase accessibility of health care services for the marginalized and poor sectors of the country.

Allen downtown
http://i557.photobucket.com/albums/ss11/catarcity/townproper4-2.jpg

The growing stone/rock at downtown Allen. It was observed by residents of downtown Allen that the stone is steadily growing as time passes by. It is reverred by the townsfolk hence, it is not being demolish by the Muncicipal government even it it is already encroaching towards the main street of downtown Allen. At the right side of the picture is the house of my officemate. She herself has witnessed how the stone grew since she was a child. The stone is now inching up its way towards their doorstep. The first time I saw the rock, hindi pa siya ganung kalaki at hindi pa siya nag eencroach towards the street at hindi pa siya dumidikit sa bahay ng officemate ko. Maybe thier is a scientific explanation for that. However another officemate also from Allen have a hair-raising experience about the growing rock. I don't know how true it is but I bet on her credibility. May kakambal pa nga raw itong rock na ito- about 2 kms away north at Brgy Calarayan. Growing din daw.

Villa Conchita beach resort at Brgy Calarayan, Allen. The alleged other twin of the famous rock can be visible, partly submerging in the water at the far-end of the resort .

This area was totally razed down by a big fire in 1998 that affected 5 blocks of the commercial area in Catarman. This area looked like a ghost town after the fire. Malamang parang ghost town pa rin ito noong 1999.

I think this is just a residential house. The house was apparently named after the British ship HMS Centurion. the ship which defeated the treasure galleon of Spain Nuestra Senora de Cobadonga near Cape Espiritu Santo on June 20, 1743. Cape Espiritu Santo is in Palapag locally known as " Uwakon". Maybe the owner of this house is aware of history. Incidentally there is a pension house/restaurant in Palapag named after Cobadonga.

Yea! Ptfndr you are right. Thanks for the correction. Sorry guys for the mistake. Ang subject naman kasi ng tourist is the Lighthouse in Batag Island and other sites of Batag which is near Laoang Island. At may label ito na view from parola. A Famous Personality from Borongan

http://www.boyabunda.net/boyabunda//images/boy-abunda/boy-abunda-king-of-talk-02.jpg

Eugenio "Boy" Abunda, Jr. aka. Warren Pineda (Mr. CHikadora) is a Filipino talk show personality who dubbed himself as "The King of Talk" in Philippine Showbiz.

He was born in Borongan City, Eastern Samar. When his father (Eugenio Abunda, Sr.) died, he dropped out of school and tried odd jobs to survive.[1]

He later found a job in Metropolitan Theater as an assistant stage manager and became an assistant to Conching Sunico, the administrator of Metropolitan Theater who taught him about public relations. After two years, he put up his own PR company called Backroom, Inc.

Boy Abunda was also one of the pillars behind the early years of Probe.

While doing PR consulting jobs for GMA Network, a network executive at the time, suggested that he try television. Soon, he became one of the hosts of RSVP, a late night variety show co-hosted by Dawn Zulueta, and subsequently, Startalk, an entertainment talk show. MANILA, Philippines—Cebu Pacific (CEB) will suspend its four-times weekly Manila-Catarman service starting May 9 because of unresolved airport safety issues.

“Since we started operations last February there had been three runway incursions by both people and vehicles. Since these incidents remain unresolved despite our repeated request for action by government agencies we have decided to suspend our flights to Catarman in the interest of passenger safety,” Candice Iyog said CEB’s vice president for marketing and distribution, said in a statement issued Tuesday afternoon.

Catarman is the capital of Northern Samar province.

Iyog said the Catarman operations would resume if flight safety were assured and if the runway were properly secured for commercial operations.

“We take safety seriously and cannot operate under these conditions. We are working closely with our colleagues in CAAP (Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines) and local authorities to resolve these open issues,” Iyog added.

'wag nyo nang iboto ang mga ignoranteng govt officials dyan!

CEB suspends Catarman flights due to airport safety issues

Cebu Pacific (CEB) will suspend its four-times weekly Manila-Catarman service starting May 9 because of unresolved airport safety issues.

“Since we started operations last February there had been three runway incursions by both people and vehicles, as such, we have decided to suspend our flights to Catarman in the interest of passenger safety,” Candice Iyog said CEB’s vice president for marketing and distribution.

Iyog said the Catarman operations will resume once flight safety is assured and the runway is properly secured for commercial operations.

“We take safety seriously and cannot operate under these conditions. We are working closely with our colleagues in CAAP and local authorities to resolve these open issues.” Iyog added.

CEB started its ATR72 service to Catarman last February 14 with scheduled flights every Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday.

In the meantime, CEB will increase its Manila-Calbayog flights to daily, up from three-times weekly to accommodate the affected passengers. For more information affected passengers may contact CEB Reservations at (02) 70-20-888 to rebook their flights.

“We hope that this issue is resolved soon so we can resume our flights to Catarman and continue to offer our trademark low fares.” Iyog emphasized.

Bad news for me yung info na yan. Kung walang ka competensiya ang PAL Express baka taasan ang airfare nila. You know guys I blame it to the Provincial Leaders because. The situation is not the problem of LGU -Catarman alone its the problem of the entire province and the two cong districts. They have all the powers to restore security and safety of the Catarman National Airport. But they do nothing. Puro politica na lang at papogi ang ginagawa ng nasa capitolyo at congresso. These people deserved to be cursed. Though our house is in Brgy Dalakit and far from the Poblacion, I favor the suggestion, that the runway has to be closed to the public once and for all. permanment Security Personnel has to be installed, that they place should be completely prohibited to any public use other than, as a landing field. That means prohibition even to early morning joggers and midnight honeymooners. All that our politicians need is their genuine concern for everybody thru political will and nothing else.

FINAL RULING
SC: 16 municipalities can’t become cities

MANILA, Philippines – The Supreme Court has denied with finality appeals to reverse its ruling that declared as unconstitutional laws that converted 16 municipalities into cities.

Voting 6-5, the court voided the following Republic Acts: 9389 (Baybay City in Leyte), 9390 (Bogo City in Cebu), 9391 (Catbalogan City in Samar), 9392 (Tandag City in Surigao del Sur), 9393 (Lamitan City in Basilan), 9394 (Borongan City in Samar), 9398 (Tayabas City in Quezon), 9404 (Tabuk City in Kalinga), 9405 (Bayugan City in Agusan del Sur), 9407 (Batac City in Ilocos Norte), 9408 (Mati City in Davao Oriental), 9409 (Guihulngan City in Negros Oriental), 9434 (Cabadbaran City in Agusan del Norte), 9435 (El Salvador City in Misamis Oriental), 9436 (Carcar City in Cebu), and 9491 (Naga City in Cebu).

“In view of the denial of the second motion for reconsideration, no further pleadings shall be entertained. Let entry of judgment be made in due course,” the high court said in a three-page resolution.

The court had voided the said laws converting the municipalities into cities in a resolution dated November 18, 2008.

The court said the municipalities were not exempt from the income requirement for cities of P100 million.

The income requirement for cities was raised to P100 million from P20 million after Republic Act 9009 amended the Local Government Code. The laws converting the 16 municipalities into cities were passed after RA 9009 took effect.

The court said “limiting the exemption only to the 16 municipalities violates the requirement that the classification must apply to all similarly situated.”

The high court made the ruling following a petition by the League of Cities of the Philippines, saying a wholesale conversion of municipalities into cities would reduce the share of existing cities of the Internal Revenue Allotment (IRA).

Yung Catarman- Calbayog via Lope de Vega road is a smooth road. Foreign contractor {china estate}kasi ang gumawa walang local. In less than an hour or 45 mins by van nasa destinasyon ka na. You dont need to pass Allen anymore unlike before.

Mabuti pa ibaling na lang natin ang ating sama ng loob sa ating mga leaders dito sa unique na rock formation na to sa Capul. To the locals Capul island looked like a ship with a rudder-shaped {Timon} rock formation at its tail-end. Thats why the locals called the place Timon-timon.
