Congressman Erbie Fabian the other day declared that the Laban ng Demokratikong Pilipino (LDP) Party is at a lost right now.

Fabian emphasized that even Mayor Celso Lobregat who chairs the LDP is not keen on the direction of the party especially in the forthcoming general elections.

We are still on a wait and see attitude on what stance our national president Senator Edgardo Angara is going to take, Fabian stressed.

The congressman hinted that the reason why the Adelante Zamboanga Party was formed because the LDP is fading.

Right now I am still with the LDP but I am not sure what will happen tomorrow, Fabian said.

He said if there is no clear cut view where LDP is heading, then he might really end up running as an independent candidate in 2010.

Fabian emphasized he will still gun for the congressional position in District 2 this coming elections. (Nonong Santiago)

by Nonong Santiago

Councilor Lilia Nuño the other day disclosed that she favors to simplify the process of providing medical assistance to the poorest of the poor in the city.

In last regular session, the City Council already passed a resolution calling for the establishment of a one-stop medical assistance center for the poor.

Councilor Mel Sadain, author of the resolution said why are we going to give the poor the run-around if we really want to help them.

Nuno said indigent families who are being given medical assistance by the city government are still complaining about the arduous process in trying to get assistance from the city government because they are made to go from one place to the other.

I understand the plight of these poor people who are trying to acquire the medical assistance from the city government. They have to come to the City Council, then to the mayor's office then to the Zamboanga City Medical Center then to City Health Office, alyi pa lang ta kaba ya diila sen na pasaje, Nuno emphasized.

The councilor asked Mayor Celso Lobregat to set up a one-stop shop where these poor indigent people can go and ask for the needed medical assistance.

She called on the mayor to authorize either Dr. Romeo Ong of the ZCMC or CHO Dr. Rodel Agbulos as the signatories to make it easy for the poor individuals to seek medical help. (Nonong Santiago)

Beng shares blessings to Sta. Cruz children

Congresswoman Beng Climaco of District over the weekend hopped to Sta. Cruz Island to spend time and share blessings with school children in observance of the blessed month of Ramadan.

The congresswoman visited the Silsillah Dialogue Movement-run school in Sta. Cruz Island and conversed with the children, who as young as 10 years old were also strictly fulfilling their obligations in the Qur'an to fast and to make sacrifices during Ramadan.

I was amazed at the children below 10 fasting. We visited the Silsillah School and distributed school supplies. This is our way of supporting them and sharing as they prepare for Hariraya, the lady solon mused.

The school children were delighted by the presence of the congresswoman and her staff and the goods that were distributed to them. Several times in the past, the congresswoman have visited the island and also shared some stuff to the children as a show of gratitude and in line with her advocacy to protect the rights and welfare of the youths.

Today, we congratulate our Moslem faithful in the celebration of Eid-ul-Fitr, we thank them for the opportunity of sharing Iftar, Climaco said as she prayed for peace in our midst, as according to Islamic teachings, the second holiest hour is before the Pagbukah.

The congresswoman has been hosting Iftar, the breaking of the fast during Ramadan for students in the Western Mindanao State University and the Ateneo de Zamboanga University said since she was the city's vice mayor said. She likewise had the opportunity of sharing Iftar meal with the Filipino Turkish Tolerance School officials. We also thank the different groups who invited us to be part of Iftar in the grand Pagbukah.

Personally, the congresswoman admitted, she learned forgiveness and mercy as we thank the groups who allowed us to journey from Ramadan to Eid-ul-Fitr.

Climaco celebrated her birthday last September 7, on the eve of the birthday of Mama Mary. Muslim leaders, such as Congressman Munir Arbison of Sulu, aver people, such as Cong. Climaco, whose birthday falls during the period of Ramadan this year, are blessed.

The Muslim word celebrates today, September 21, Eid-ul-Fitr, the culmination of Ramadan, a month long period of fasting and personal sacrifices. (Ryan Sta. Teresa)

Jimenez to city hall: Allow candle vendors to use booths

http://www.zambotoday.com/uploads/jawo.jpg

Councilor Cesar Jawo Jimenez called on City hall yesterday to provide or simply allow the candle vendors at Fort Pilar to temporarily use booths similar to that being provided by the Coca Cola company.

On Tuesday, the City Administrator Office led by Asst. Administrator Elmeir Apolinario demolished more than 40 stalls of candle vendors near the shrine.

After seeing the condition of the candle vendors during the heavy rains yesterday, Jimenez said that he pity the situation of those poor people who are just trying to earn a living.

The problem is not solved by simply providing 2X4 table and umbrella because the weather condition right now is extreme. When it's not raining, it is too hot, and when it rains, it pours, Jimenez said.

I really pity those people. They go there everyday and they stay there until night time. Makalastima gayot el diila situasion. Ta muha gayot sila si taman ulan.

Jimenez added An umbrella with one table is not enough. It's really inconvenient for them. I just hope these people will not get sick. I really pitty their sad plight.

Earlier, City Administrator Antonio Orendain Jr. said that Mayor Celso Lobregat allowed the utilization of the vacant area fronting the walls of the Zamboanga State College of Marine Sciences and Technology (ZSCMST) at the left side of the shrine.

It was learned from City Hall, to ensure ample space, the temporary stalls will have a uniform size of 2x4 square foot-tables and a huge umbrella for vendors to sell candles and other religious items.

Jimenez questioned the timing of the demolition since the entire people of Zamboanga will already be celebrating Hermosa Festival in honor of Nuestra Senora La virgen del Pilar in just a few days. Porke man sila bien apurao bungka kunel mga stalls? pwede man era after Fiesta Pilar yalang. He described the demolition of stalls of candle vendors at Fort Pilar as anti-poor and cruel.

Councilor Jimenez also questioned City Hall's statement that it is conscious about time element and it has to implement the project the soonest possible time.

"I am really surprised with that statement. We have more than 2 Billion worth of important projects delayed and the money is just sleeping in the banks. El siminteryo asta ara nuay pa. El bus terminal, manada mas importante projects taman delay aura 15 days extention lang ta pidi mga vendors abla sila conscious sila na time?", Jimenez ended. :applause: -(Hader Glang)

[i'd still vote for you in dis coming 2010 electons, mr.Jawo.
Just get out of the LDP. then i'm 100% sure!]

NFA to double rice, corn purchase in Zamboanga Peninsula (http://www.pna.gov.ph/index.php?idn=2&sid=&nid=2&rid=230761)

ZAMBOANGA CITY, Sept. 21 (PNA)--The National Food Authority (NFA) will double the volume of palay and corn it is buying from the farmers in the region after President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo recently approved giving of additional funding to the government’s grains agency.

President Arroyo approved last week the release of additional P6.2 billion to allow the NFA to double the procurement of palay and corn and push up the farm gate prices in the different parts of the country particularly in Mindanao where prices have recently softened.

NFA Assistant Zamboanga Peninsula Director Rolando Maravilla said they are targeting to buy palay and corn from farmers in the region worth P340 million for this year.

The NFA regional office covers the provinces of Zamboanga del Norte, Zamboanga Sibugay and Zamboanga del Sur and the cities of Dapitan, Dipolog, Isabela, Pagadian and Zamboanga.

Maravilla said they could purchase as much as 400,000 bags of palay and corn from farmers in this region with the allocation of the additional funding given by the President to the grains agency.

He said they are buying palay at P17 per kilogram and P13.50 per kilogram for white corn.

He disclosed that the buying price for yellow corn has dropped to P10 per kilogram.

He urged the farmers to sell their rice and corn produce to the NFA and avail of the incentive the agency is giving to them.

Farm inputs are given as an incentive to farmers who prefer to sell their rice and corn produce to the NFA.

Maravilla said they have rolling stores going around the provinces and cities in the region to buy the palay and corn produce of the farmers.

He said will no longer worry about the expenses they would incur in transporting their produce to the NFA since “it is us that will be going to their farm.” (PNA)

OIL DEALERS are happy kasi mas malakas un kain ng tricy ng gasolina than taxi now a days kasi converted ng mga taxi into LPG^^ which mean pag napatay un mga tricy sales of this big3 will a dramatic fall^^ around 25%?^^

that's a good idea. but I doubt if our LGU can impose it to them. Especially, when election period comes. If there's a candidate that would impose a policy regarding these kind of problems maybe I'll consider him/her.

kya nga di last tym the tricy operators dito nag condemn sa nagpasa ng batas about converting the tricy into LPG and one reasons ay mas malaki na raw ung magagasta nila pag ni convert ung Tricy into LPG im sure may nagbaback up sa association na to na wag ipa convert into LPG....and kung ma convert man only Pryce Gas ung makikinabang sa LPG convert :lol::lol::lol:

^^and ung fare sa tricy grabe halos sumakay kna ng taxi samantala if u ride taxi from Mandaue to lahug ang singil sau sa metro nasa 50pesos lng pero kung sumakay ka sa tricy dito sa Zamboanga from tetuan to San Jose they will get about 50pesos din kakaloka parang taxi:lol::lol::lol:minsan sinasabihan ko ung driver manong parang taxi kau kung sumingil and take note mas mura sa ibang lugar kaya minsan nakasimangot ung di tag rito pag sumakay ng taxicles este tricy:lol:

Regional Development Council endorses DTI projects (http://businessmirror.com.ph/home/regions/16407-regional-development-council-endorses-dti-projects.html)
Regions
Written by Bong Garcia Jr. / Correspondent
Wednesday, 23 September 2009 20:39

ZAMBOANGA CITY—The Regional Development Council (RDC) has favorably endorsed the three projects lined up by the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) regional office for this southern port city.

These are the 4th One-Town, One-Project (OTOP) Mindanao Island Fair 2009, the 2nd Mindanao Investment Conference (MiniCon), and the Philippine Business Registry (PBR).

DTI regional director Nazrullah Manzur said the RDC has passed a resolution favorably endorsing the three projects of the DTI during its 129th meeting recently held in Pagadian City.

Manzur said the OTOP fair will showcase the newest line of handicrafts, delicacies and various products from all regions in Mindanao.

The fair, which be held from October 9 to 12, will also feature side events such as business matching, garden show and technological demonstrations.

Manzur said the 2nd Min iCon is jointly organized by his office and the Mindanao Business Council.

Themed “Steer the Wheels to Progress, Invest in MindaNow,” the 2nd Min iCon is scheduled for October 9 and 10.

The third project presented by the DTI at the RDC’s 129th meeting is the PBR. It was presented by PBR project manager Whilner Morales of the DTI central office.

Morales impressed upon the participants the urgency of improving the Philippines’ competitiveness, particularly in the area of starting a business.

Zambo readies for Tourism Week
Updated September 22, 2009

ZAMBOANGA CITY -- Everything is set for the week-long observance of Tourism Week aimed to raise awareness on the potentials of this southern port city as a tourist hub.

Mayor Celso Lobregat said the Tourism Week celebration scheduled from September 20 to 26 will kick off with the 10th Drum and Lyre competition at the Paseo del Mar.

Lobregat said ten elementary schools will compete with each other for the title.

The participating elementary schools are: Ayala; Ateneo de Zamboanga University; Baliwasan; Boalan; Lunzuran; Sangali; Sta. Maria; Tetuan; West Central School; and Western Mindanao State University.

Lobregat said there will be free visit to various tourist attractions from September 23 to 24 with elementary school students coming from the 11 school districts of this city as participants.

He said the student-tourists will be given the chance to tour around the Joaquin F. Enriquez, Jr. Memorial Sports Complex, the Fort Pilar Shrine, the City Museum, Paseo Mar and the entire Pasonanca Park.

He said the Tourism Week will be culminated with the Ayuda Limpiesa (Help Clean) Year 6.

Lobregat will spearhead the clean-up activity in major streets downtown including the public market, several downtown streets to Fort Pilar Shrine, the perimeters of City Hall and Sucabon River.

The week’s celebration is being organized by the City Mayor’s Office through the City Tourism and Promotions Division.

Tourism is part and parcel of this city’s economy and its promotion is in line with the end goal of making this city as an important tourist hub. -PNA

Zamboanga City accelerates health program (http://www.pna.gov.ph/index.php?idn=2&sid=&nid=2&rid=231699)
By Teofilo P. Garcia

ZAMBOANGA CITY, Sept. 25 (PNA) - The city government has released almost 2,000 health insurance cards to various urban poor groups including persons with disabilities (PWDs), deportees, child care workers, barangay nutrition scholars and retired health workers.

The distribution of the 1,952 health insurance cards to the beneficiaries was made Thursday and spearheaded by Mayor Celso Lobregat.

The granting of health insurance cards is implemented in line with the city government’s accelerated health program.

Lobregat said this is to ensure that the marginalized and deserving sectors of this city will have something to turn to in cases of health problems and emergencies.

Of the total 1,952 beneficiaries, 1,500 are members of the urban poor sector; 253 PWDs (persons with disability); 35 deportees from Malaysia; 42 barangay nutrition scholars; 89 day care workers (renewal); 10 retired barangay health workers (also renewal) and 23 child care workers.

Lobregat said he will distribute on Monday more than 4,000 Philhealth insurance cards to indigent families from this city’s 98 barangays.

He said improved financial condition of this city has enabled the local government to expand the number of beneficiaries of the health insurance benefits from 5,000 in 2007 to a total of 14,000 this year.

In terms of appropriation, the city government’s budget for Philhealth insurance in 2007 was only P3 million. In 2008, it to soared to P3.9 million and this year it will further increase to P8.4 million.

Lobregat said that for next year, the 14,000 beneficiaries will further increase to 18,000 with a total appropriation of P12.2 million for Philhealth insurance.

Lobregat said it is his hope and prayer that people will not get sick but acknowledged the fact that “it is inevitable whether we like it or not, one or two will get sick” and the PhilHealth insurance cards will be useful and helpful to the beneficiaries. (PNA)

by by Shiela Covarrubias
Preparations are now being finalized for the observance of Zamboanga Hermosa Festival 2009, a month long festivity in honor of Nuestra Senora La Virgen del Pilar, the city’s most revered patron saint.

Aquino tops WMSU mock election

If elections were held today, Senator Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III would be the President of the Philippines, at least at Western Mindanao State University, as the outcome of the mock election by the USC Senate-sponsored mock election was revealed.

The Senate of the University Student Council in coordination with the House of Representatives and various College Student Boards conducted a one day-mock election in some areas of the university with the College of Education Social Hall as its nerve center. Students were asked to write in a piece of paper their bets for the Presidential and the Vice Presidential posts respectively using a reference prepared by The USC Senate to serve as their guides.

Senator Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III, the presumptuous candidate of the Liberal Party for the 2010 Presidential Election topped the poll with 487 out of 1,008 votes or 48.31%, followed by the Senator Manuel “Manny Villar of the Nacionalista Party who got 180 votes or 17.86%.

Behind Aquino and Villar is Senator Francis “Chiz” Escudero of the Nationalist Peoples Coalition who is yet to declare its bid for presidency, who received 110 votes or 10.91%.

Eight colleges participated in the said election, to wit; College of Engineering and Technology(CET), College of Education(CED), College of Home Economics (CHE), College of Nursing (CN), College of Liberal Arts (CLA), College of Social Work and Community Development (CSWCD), College of Criminal Justice Education (CCJE) and College of Physical Education Recreation and Sports (CPERS).

Alvin Rex Lucero, the Senate President and the proponent of the Resolution authorizing the conduct of the activity said that Senator Aquino won in all participating candidates with really wide margin ensuring its swift victory in the mock election. He further stressed-out that the activity will serve as the jumpstart of the series of activities prepared by the USC Senate relative to the 2010 Election.

“The Senate therefore earnestly pray that the said activity will serve as an eye-opener to the students and will make them realize the sanctity of their vote, thus enticing them to participate in the forthcoming elections”, Lucero added.

For the Presidential post, the other candidates in the polls and their share in the number of votes were Senator Manuel Roxas, 36 votes (3.57%), Vice President Noli de Castro, 28 votes (2.78%), Makati Mayor Jejomar Binay, 22 votes (2.18%), Defense Secretary Gilbert Teodoro, 17 votes (1.69%), Senator Loren Legarda, 14 votes (1.39%) and Former President Joseph Estrada, 14 votes (1.39%).

To ensure the success of the activity, all of the members of The Senate took part in the activity bearing with them different assignments, Senate President Pro Tempore Lyneth Francisco was assigned to watch over the elections happening in the College of Liberal Arts, Majority Floor Leader Jeric Ledesma was tasked to oversee the conducts of the mock election in his home College — CPERS., Minority Floor Leader Stephanie Rose Vargas and Senator Jovencio Joseph Ilagan III teamed up to facilitate the mock polls happening in the College of Nursing and the College of Home Economics, Senator Ronel Estrada keenly supervised the activities in the College of Engineering and Technology, Senator Mark Anthony Mejares chiefly managed the participation of the College of Social Work and Community Development and the College of Criminal Justice Education and Senate President Alvin Rex Lucero took the lead in acting as the Overall Chairperson of the event.

The presenter of the event also take cognizance of the participation of the members of the House of Representatives headed by Speaker Jerick Gerard Go and all the members of the College Student Boards of the participating Colleges.

As an added value, the USC Senate installed two “freedom cloth” in the University, one in Social Hall and the other at the CLA Kiosk for the students to express their thoughts relative to the 2010 National Election.(Noble King- September 25, 2009)

Zamboanga City: The Great and Little Santa Cruz Islands

http://www.ironwulf.net/wp/wp-content/uploads/2007/07/sta_cruz_islnd_01.jpg
The famous pinks sands of the Great Sta Cruz Island

Even before Boracay and Puerto Galera got its fame as some of the most popular beaches in the country, there was the Great Santa Cruz Islands and its famous rare pink sand beach stretching three miles across the island shores. An old coral vendor on the island reminisced the days when they would get a large number of tourist in the area and they would get considerable profits selling some of their wares. But since the kidnapping and abduction incidents in the nearby areas, people are now scared to visit the island and its popularity went downhill from there.

Speckles of Pink Sands detail

A pink sand beach is very rare and there are only a few of them around the globe. They can be found in Horseshoe Bay in Bermuda, 3 islands from the Bahamas, Culebra in Puerto Rico, Maui in Hawaii, Santorini in Greece, Barbuda in the Carribean, Crane Beach in Barbados, and here in The Great Santa Cruz Islands in the Philippines.
