Zamboanga city is considered to be a Highly urbanized city and yet we don't have a decent bus terminal. It's a shame that even municipalities have a more decent bus terminals than of zamboanga's. :ohno:

Hola Zamboanga - online guide to Asia's Latin City took home the Uniquely Mindanao Blog trophy for the 2009 Philippine Blog Awards (Mindanao Special Awards) last October 24, 2009 in Pearlmont Inn, Cagayan de Oro City. The awarding ceremony was held after the 3rd Mindanao Bloggers Summit.

The award came as a surprise. Fortunately, I was able to attend the awarding. During the announcement, I was taking video clips. It took a while for me to go up to the stage and received the trophy. I had goose bumps when I was giving the acceptance speech.

The Uniquely Mindanao blog "is clearly identifiable as being from and about Mindanao. It evokes a feeling of belongingness among Mindanao readers, and an appreciation and understanding of what Mindanao truly is among non-Mindanaoan readers. Dolce Vita is a first of a kind event in Zamboanga city. It welcomes Ateneans and non-Ateneans alike to experience an event like never before.

It is similar to the Oscar's! But, more than the Oscar's, guests upon coming down from their cars will be welcomed by cheerful Latin dancers before they walk through the long Red Carpet which will start at the Atlas of Astoria Regency.

Paparazzi will be all over taking their photos as they pass through... There are other possible points for photo backgrounds and these are the Oscar wall and a vintage car displayed near the red carpet passage way.

Inside, amidst a Latin inspired ambiance, the creme de la creme of the city will be served dinner while popular soloists serenade them.

Immediately after dinner, the main show will happen... lots of dances and high-end fashion show which serves as one of the main features of the show.

Immediately after the show, Zamboanga's best DJ will fill the venue with contagious music which will include disco and ballroom sounds...

Dolce Vita means Sweet Life in Italian... True to the words, you will have a fabulous time at this event!

Valesco humiliated over city’s inability to solve IBT problem

“Bien makahuya canaton hasta ahora nuay pa kita bus terminal, bueno pa maga diutay munisipio. Mucho man era kita sen.” This was the reaction of Councilor Gerky Valesco during yesterday’s regular session as he chided other members of the august body for making it so difficult to vote on a very simple resolution that would pave the way for the temporary construction of a bus terminal.



Valesco said the problem with some officials is that they all think they are very bright as they tend to forget the people whom they promised to serve.
“Imagine they cannot agree and vote on a very simple resolution,” Valesco emphasized.


The councilor’s reaction came about when Councilor Mel Sadain passed a resolution calling on the City Engineer’s Office to construct a temporary makeshift in the Divisoria lot for the continuous operation of buses plying the provincial routes. However eleven aldermen voted against Sadain’s resolution and only seven supported.


“Vota kita conel resolution para el bien del hente hinde cay ta pensa ustedes cay ay regaña con ustedes si Mayor Celso Lobregat,” Sadain said.


The debates continued until finally, Councilor Jaime Cabato amended Sadain’s resolution requesting Mayor Lobregat to look for legal ways to compel bus owners and operators to transfer to Divisoria and to construct a temporary makeshift building at their own expense.


Majority of the members voted in the affirmative with only two objection.
Valesco said Lobregat should discuss and explain to the City Council what his plans are for the IBT so they can be guided accordingly.


“I believe the august body should be abreast and updated on the situation because our constituents are asking why is the IBT not moving and being implemented considering it is the flagship project of the administration,” [/SIZE]Valesco said. (Nonong Santiago)

“Well he can laugh by himself, but I don’t understand how Mayor Lobregat can just laugh at the problems of the city.”
Thus, said Vice Mayor Mannix Dalipe yesterday to earlier comments made by Mayor Celso Lobregat particularly on his pronouncements to run for the mayoralty post to save Zamboanga City.
Lobregat, in an interview, laughed at Dalipe’s announcement to save the city saying Zamboanga city is doing very well under his administration “if it ain’t broken, why fix it?” Lobregat said.


The vice mayor asked how can this city official laugh when people are being shot to death, living in fear, unemployed, harassed by the government. How can this city official just laugh at the sufferings being experienced by the poor people of Zamboanga due to exhorbitant taxes?”


“How can Mayor Lobregat laugh when many barangays are submerged during heavy downpour, when a lot of people are living in poverty without benefiting from the city’s billions of pesos which is only sleeping in banks?” Dalipe continued.


He said this is the reason why the city is not progressing because of the very bad attitude and poor mentality of the present administration.


Dalipe reprimanded some members of the august body for blocking the progress of Zamboanga City in exchange of the pleasures of one person.
He said the passage of a simple resolution for the temporary transfer of the bus terminal to Divisoria had to pass difficulty.


The vice mayor questioned “why go against the resolution when it is for the best interest of the people?”
He said the Guiwan bus terminal is not anymore conducive because it is small, and transferring the terminal to Divisoria will decongest traffic in the city proper.


Dalipe said the existing city’s traffic code ordinance has identified areas in Boalan and Divisoria for the IBT purposely to decongest traffic and councilors who objected the transfer are clearly obstructing development just to please their master. (Nonong Santiago)

Aquino leads presidential race; Dalipe ahead of Zamboanga mayoralty race in poll survey

ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines (Mindanao Examiner / November 8, 2009) – A pre-election survey held secretly among local government employees showed Senator Benigno Aquino III leading in the presidential race against three other candidates and Zamboanga City vice mayor Jose Manuel Dalipe also ahead against incumbent Celso Lobregat in the mayoralty race.

The survey was conducted on 1,000 city government officials and employees from October 25 to November 7 and whose results were made public on Sunday by a group called the Concerned City Government Employees.

“This survey was done by concerned city government officials and employees. We cannot divulge our identity due to serious repercussions. We expect many politicians to question the result of this survey, especially those who got low scores.”

“Some of us might even be forced to discredit this survey in public. But we hope you will allow the people of Zamboanga to know the sentiments of those working in the City Government of Zamboanga, and let them rate for themselves the credibility of this survey,” the group said in a statement sent to the independent regional newspaper The Mindanao Examiner.

One of the poll questions asked the city employees who they will vote if elections were held today?

The pollsters said Aquino, son of former President Corazon Aquino, topped the survey among presidential candidates with 299 votes against ex-President Joseph Estrada who got 154 votes; Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro, 192; and Senator Manuel Villar, 226.

They said 129 respondents were still undecided who to vote for in the May 2010 national elections.

For the vice presidential candidates, Makati City mayor Jejomar Binay leads the survey with 70 votes, while Senator Francis Escudero got 203 votes; Senator Loren Legarda with 131; Senator Mar Roxas with 273 votes and 323 respondents still undecided who to choose among the four.

In the local front, Zamboanga City vice mayor Jose Manuel Dalipe was way ahead of Celso Lobregat, the incumbent mayor. Dalipe, a favorite among the locals, got 688 votes and Lobregat only with 247 votes. The Concerned City Government Employees said 65 respondents were undecided whether to vote for Dalipe or Lobregat.:lol::lol::lol:


Former Catholic priest and now Presidential assistant for Mindanao, Crisanto dela Cruz, was also leading in the vice mayoralty race in Zamboanga City with 412 votes against incumbent councilors Juan Elago, 328; Cesar Itturalde, 72; and Roel Natividad, 84. It said 10 percent of the 1,000 respondents were still undecided who to vote for. clap clap:cheers::)

Like Dalipe, the former priest, a known philanthropist in Zamboanga City, is also a favorite among the local voters. Dela Cruz previously said he is likely to run as an independent candidate for vice mayor.

Local congressman Erico Fabian also bested Samuel Enesando with 920 votes as against 41 in Zamboanga’s 2nd congressional district and 39 were still undecided.

While in the 1st congressional district, Congresswoman Maria Isabelle Climaco leads the survey with 798 votes as against 144 votes for James Jimenez, but 58 respondents were also undecided who to vote for in the elections.

Another poll question asked the respondents: “Among the following incumbent Councilors, who do you think deserve another term if they are allowed to run again?”

For the 1st congressional district, the frontrunners were: Rogelio Valesco, with 910 votes; Cezar Jimenez, 902; Melchor Rey Sadain, 893; Luis Biel, 611; Ethelinda Abarro, 553; Charlie Mariano, 501; Jaime Cabato, 412; and Rudy Lim, 269 votes.

In the 2nd congressional district, councilor Lilia Nuno topped the survey with 892 votes and followed by Juan Elago, 868; Cesar Itturalde, 561; Roel Natividad, 522; Eduardo Saavedra, 506; Benjamin Guingona, 404; Rey Candido, 389; and Eduardo Rodriguez with 211 votes.

The pollster also asked the city hall employees who they think should run for Councilor in the coming elections. And the top 5 were: Roseller Natividad, with 785 votes; Rommel Agan, 658; Antonio Orendain Jr., 460; Rodelyn Agbulos, 435; and Vic Solis, 426.

Most of the incumbent councilors are allies of Lobregat.

The group said in the 2007 elections, no formal survey was conducted with the city government officials and employees because some politicians thought their opinion was not important.

“In the 2010 elections, we will not allow that to happen again. This is why several officials and employees of the local government already took the lead and conducted an honest to goodness survey amongst those serving in the city government of Zamboanga. “

“Please help us make our voices heard. We cannot do so ourselves because of serious consequences from our bosses who are involved in this survey. This is the sentiment of those working in the local government and we want the outside world to hear us,” the Concerned City Government Employees said.

The Ateneo de Zamboanga University Concert Band is visiting Cagayan de oro for a two day performance on November 24 & 25, 2009. This concert tour is in celebration of the Sesquicentennial (150 years) of the return of the Jesuits to the Philippines. This is also in celebration of 100 years of the Ateneo de Zamboanga University from 1912-2012.

The band concert dubbed as "Stint" will be performed in Xavier University on the 24th, Tuesday, at 3.00 PM (Matinee) and 7.00 PM (Gala), and in Liceo de Cagayan University, Rodelsa Hall on the 25th, Wednesday, 7.30 PM. In XU tickets sell from P 30 to P 150 while in Liceo, tickets sell at P 100 (for students) and P 200 (for non-students).

The band was founded in 1932 with the aim to develop the musical talents of the Atenean to help build a well-rounded person in him as well as help him get an Atenean education with the use of this musical talent.

A member of the band during his high school and college days at the Ateneo, Apolonio G. Enriquez took over the band in 1991. A choir director, arranger, conductor and brass teacher, he studied conducting under Prof. Alfredo Santos Buenaventura at the Centro Escolar University Conservatory of Music. He transformed the band from a marching and pep band into a concert band.

At present, the band has fifty (50) members, twenty four (24) of whom are college students, twenty (20) are from the high school and six (6) from the grade school.

Band members undergo a two-year beginners’ course training that requires them to finish the elementary and intermediate method books. They are the elevated into the regular band and are entitled to 50% scholarship (tuition only). After going through the first and second advanced books, they qualify for a full scholarship. Beginners mostly come from the grades 4 and 5 levels.

Today, the ADZU Concert Band performs a wide variety of music ranging from Classical to Rock. It performs Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture, as well as Rossini’s William Tell, works of John Williams and themes from the movies. This includes hits of the seventies, eighties and nineties, etc.

Among the crowd favorites are Prof. Lucio San Pedro’s works- lahing kayumanggi, his suite pastorals, Dapithapon, Abot-tanaw, Pistahan sa Nayon, among others.

The concert, entitled “stint”, will feature Classics, Filipino compositions, themes from the movies, music of the big-band era, and even Rock numbers for our younger audiences.

The Ateneo de Zamboanga University in its desire to promote art and culture has established a Center for the Performing and Visual Arts (CPVA). It has also established a Gallery of the Peninsula and the Archipelago where now, artists from all over hold their exhibits and where students and ordinary citizens come to see and appreciate works of art. The Ateneo also established the Institute for Cultural Studies for Western Mindanao (ICSWM) and the Ateneo Peace Institute for the inter-religious and inter-cultural dialogue for the promotion of PEACE.

The present President of Ateneo de Zamboanga University is Rev. Fr. Antonio Moreno, SJ, a product of Xavier University High School and Ateneo de Manila University.

Fuerza Jovenes to come up with 10-point agenda

Fuerza Jovenes, after its official kick-off last month, engages now actively with the different youth organizations to be able to come up with the 10-point-youth agenda for Zamboanga City.

On Wednesday, just after the long holidays, this group of passionate young leaders representing the different youth organizations converged at WMSU Law Auditorium to discuss concrete plans to advance the interest of the movement. Furthermore, the group held a caucus regarding the programs they desire to be enlisted as part of the agenda. Job opportunities, education and entrepreneurship were among the subjects that the group unanimously brought up.
Jerico Bustamante, chairperson of Fuerza Jovenes, said the 10-Point-Youth Agenda is expected to be crafted and completed by next week after more consultations in the grassroot level is done. He also disclosed that Fuerza Jovenes will lobby with the different political parties to adopt the youth agenda in their platform of government and to ultimately be institutionalized it through a city ordinance.
Meanwhile, JV Bue, president of Fuerza Jovenes, said the movement continues to recruit members who believe that Zamboanga City can be great once more. “For interested parties, they may contact us through 984-0505 or 09157030751,” he said.

Dalipe: “How can Mayor Lobregat just laugh at the city’s problems?”

“Well he can laugh by himself, but I don’t understand how Mayor Lobregat can just laugh at the problems of the city.”
Thus, said Vice Mayor Mannix Dalipe yesterday to earlier comments made by Mayor Celso Lobregat particularly on his pronouncements to run for the mayoralty post to save Zamboanga City.
Lobregat, in an interview, laughed at Dalipe’s announcement to save the city saying Zamboanga city is doing very well under his administration “if it ain’t broken, why fix it?” Lobregat said.


The vice mayor asked how can this city official laugh when people are being shot to death, living in fear, unemployed, harassed by the government. How can this city official just laugh at the sufferings being experienced by the poor people of Zamboanga due to exhorbitant taxes?”


“How can Mayor Lobregat laugh when many barangays are submerged during heavy downpour, when a lot of people are living in poverty without benefiting from the city’s billions of pesos which is only sleeping in banks?” Dalipe continued.


He said this is the reason why the city is not progressing because of the very bad attitude and poor mentality of the present administration.


Dalipe reprimanded some members of the august body for blocking the progress of Zamboanga City in exchange of the pleasures of one person.
He said the passage of a simple resolution for the temporary transfer of the bus terminal to Divisoria had to pass difficulty.


The vice mayor questioned “why go against the resolution when it is for the best interest of the people?”
He said the Guiwan bus terminal is not anymore conducive because it is small, and transferring the terminal to Divisoria will decongest traffic in the city proper.


Dalipe said the existing city’s traffic code ordinance has identified areas in Boalan and Divisoria for the IBT purposely to decongest traffic and councilors who objected the transfer are clearly obstructing development just to please their master. (Nonong Santiago)

Aquino leads presidential race; Dalipe ahead of Zamboanga mayoralty race in poll survey

ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines (Mindanao Examiner / November 8, 2009) – A pre-election survey held secretly among local government employees showed Senator Benigno Aquino III leading in the presidential race against three other candidates and Zamboanga City vice mayor Jose Manuel Dalipe also ahead against incumbent Celso Lobregat in the mayoralty race.

The survey was conducted on 1,000 city government officials and employees from October 25 to November 7 and whose results were made public on Sunday by a group called the Concerned City Government Employees.

“This survey was done by concerned city government officials and employees. We cannot divulge our identity due to serious repercussions. We expect many politicians to question the result of this survey, especially those who got low scores.”

“Some of us might even be forced to discredit this survey in public. But we hope you will allow the people of Zamboanga to know the sentiments of those working in the City Government of Zamboanga, and let them rate for themselves the credibility of this survey,” the group said in a statement sent to the independent regional newspaper The Mindanao Examiner.

One of the poll questions asked the city employees who they will vote if elections were held today?

The pollsters said Aquino, son of former President Corazon Aquino, topped the survey among presidential candidates with 299 votes against ex-President Joseph Estrada who got 154 votes; Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro, 192; and Senator Manuel Villar, 226.

They said 129 respondents were still undecided who to vote for in the May 2010 national elections.

For the vice presidential candidates, Makati City mayor Jejomar Binay leads the survey with 70 votes, while Senator Francis Escudero got 203 votes; Senator Loren Legarda with 131; Senator Mar Roxas with 273 votes and 323 respondents still undecided who to choose among the four.

In the local front, Zamboanga City vice mayor Jose Manuel Dalipe was way ahead of Celso Lobregat, the incumbent mayor. Dalipe, a favorite among the locals, got 688 votes and Lobregat only with 247 votes. The Concerned City Government Employees said 65 respondents were undecided whether to vote for Dalipe or Lobregat.:lol::lol::lol:


Former Catholic priest and now Presidential assistant for Mindanao, Crisanto dela Cruz, was also leading in the vice mayoralty race in Zamboanga City with 412 votes against incumbent councilors Juan Elago, 328; Cesar Itturalde, 72; and Roel Natividad, 84. It said 10 percent of the 1,000 respondents were still undecided who to vote for. clap clap:cheers::)

Like Dalipe, the former priest, a known philanthropist in Zamboanga City, is also a favorite among the local voters. Dela Cruz previously said he is likely to run as an independent candidate for vice mayor.

Local congressman Erico Fabian also bested Samuel Enesando with 920 votes as against 41 in Zamboanga’s 2nd congressional district and 39 were still undecided.

While in the 1st congressional district, Congresswoman Maria Isabelle Climaco leads the survey with 798 votes as against 144 votes for James Jimenez, but 58 respondents were also undecided who to vote for in the elections.

Another poll question asked the respondents: “Among the following incumbent Councilors, who do you think deserve another term if they are allowed to run again?”

For the 1st congressional district, the frontrunners were: Rogelio Valesco, with 910 votes; Cezar Jimenez, 902; Melchor Rey Sadain, 893; Luis Biel, 611; Ethelinda Abarro, 553; Charlie Mariano, 501; Jaime Cabato, 412; and Rudy Lim, 269 votes.

In the 2nd congressional district, councilor Lilia Nuno topped the survey with 892 votes and followed by Juan Elago, 868; Cesar Itturalde, 561; Roel Natividad, 522; Eduardo Saavedra, 506; Benjamin Guingona, 404; Rey Candido, 389; and Eduardo Rodriguez with 211 votes.

The pollster also asked the city hall employees who they think should run for Councilor in the coming elections. And the top 5 were: Roseller Natividad, with 785 votes; Rommel Agan, 658; Antonio Orendain Jr., 460; Rodelyn Agbulos, 435; and Vic Solis, 426.

Most of the incumbent councilors are allies of Lobregat.

The group said in the 2007 elections, no formal survey was conducted with the city government officials and employees because some politicians thought their opinion was not important.

“In the 2010 elections, we will not allow that to happen again. This is why several officials and employees of the local government already took the lead and conducted an honest to goodness survey amongst those serving in the city government of Zamboanga. “

“Please help us make our voices heard. We cannot do so ourselves because of serious consequences from our bosses who are involved in this survey. This is the sentiment of those working in the local government and we want the outside world to hear us,” the Concerned City Government Employees said.

Predawn explosions rock Mandaluyong, Quezon cities

Predawn explosions on Monday rocked the head office of a giant food conglomerate in Mandaluyong City, and a large supermarket in Quezon City.

While no one was reported hurt in the explosions, police are looking into a possible connection between Monday's incident and similar explosions last October 30.

Monday's incident occurred two days after police arrested a Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) commander in Zamboanga City in connection with the beheading of Marines in 2007.

A report by dzBB radio's Allan Gatus said the first explosion occurred at 3 a.m. at the corner of Julia Vargas and San Miguel Avenue in Mandaluyong City.

It caused extensive damage to the signage of the head office of San Miguel Corp.

Police quickly set up railings along the sidewalk near the site of the incident to keep pedestrians away.

Eastern Police District head Chief Superintendent Benjardi Mantele ordered a full investigation into the incident.

But a report by dzBB's Sam Nielsen quoted Mantele as saying the explosion was relatively weak and may have been from a pillbox, adding that a stronger improvised explosive device (IED) than what were used in the attacks would have caused greater damage.

Mantele said they are also looking into a connection between Monday's explosion to the one near Union Bank along Meralco Avenue on October 30.

He said their initial investigation of the Union Bank incident indicated that the explosion may have stemmed from a fraternity war.

The second blast on Monday occurred at 4:50 a.m., in front of the Puregold Supermarket along Commonwealth Avenue.

A security guard said a man threw a plastic bag containing the explosive then ran off, leaving his shoes behind as he hurried away.

"Paghagis, tumayo agad at naiwan ang sapatos; nakamedyas nalang na tumakbo (A man threw a plastic bag and ran off, leaving his shoes behind)," security guard Darwin Taringding said.

He said he approached the bag to investigate, but when he was six meters away, the bag exploded and smoke enveloped him.

Also, no one was hurt in the Puregold incident.

October 30 blasts

On October 30, two predawn explosions rocked Quezon and Pasig Cities, on the day Metro Manila police were to go on full alert for the All Saints' weekend.

The first blast occurred at 1:05 a.m. in front of the Burgundy Tower along Katipunan Avenue in Quezon City.

It created a crater and damaged a parked Honda Civic belonging to Ateneo student Allan Valencia.

A second explosion occurred shortly after the Quezon City incident, where another IED exploded across the Union Bank Plaza along Meralco Avenue in Pasig City.

Sketchy initial reports showed one of four men was seen leaving a bag near the plants at Meralco Avenue. The man was described as wearing a jacket, his face covered. -

I hope that if Mannix will be the mayor of Zamboanga City, he will bring progress to make Zamboanga a haven for big-time (not local) investors because of its strategic location.

However, he should be really careful for his contributions. If he is a mayor, probably the controversial IBP-Zamboanga Hermosa Province Issue may come again as one of his pet priorities. Another thing, is Mannix making or convincing citizens in favor for the inclusion of Zamboanga as part or the regional center of ARMM or Bangsamoro?

Well, what I should say is good luck. May he give his best to developing the city. If this happens, we will drive away to Manila, Cebu, etc.

Since naging Mayor si Lobri, pinull-out ni PGMA ang Regional Offices sa Pagadian City para mai-allow ni GMA ang pagiging regional center ng ARMM na ayaw ni Lobri. Talagang hiranang ni PGMA ang pagdevelop ng Zamboanga as a commercialized city. Lahat ng pondo para sa Zamboanga nilamon ni Gloria para sa Pagadian. President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo should not done this.

Marami nang violations si Gloria against sa 1987 constitution ng Pilipinas na pinaghirapan ni Cory.

basta ako gusto ko makakita ng bago mukha sa city hall... tama na ang 2 terms ni celso... iba naman ang maupo sa pwesto... :)

hehehe surveys say they like monsi than elago but either elago or delacruz is both ok for me but if monsi wins since he came from the church so i think he wont allow.

i hope so... and if he does he will invite other congregations to come and see the beauty of Zamboanga... even the Franciscans, Dominicans, Rogationist, Redemptorists, etc etc etc just to strengthen the archdiocese as well as to improve ties with Muslims.

In his term as a congressman, I supported Celso,because his programs and support for the city especially in the exclusion of Zamboanga in the ARMM Region have met my expectations... Thus, I voted for him when he run for mayor in the 2004 elections.. Bt, during the course if his term as mayor of the city, I see nothing drastic but slow progress. In 2007, his second term, it became worse... More promises were made, thus I became frustrated, because these promises have not taken its proper actions, now many people are becoming frustrated due to his actions that scores best self-interests.. His voices were always heard, but never from the people... Thus, his popularity is declining and declining...

I strongly disagree with the 3rd statement... Though there were actions made by some national business tycoons to best penetrate ZC for their business expansion even international corporations, but these investors received no support and weren't materialized.. Again, because of Self-Interest... :bash:

with the support of Monsi, by winning in the election as ZC's vice mayor, he wouldn't by deaf by people's call of zamboanga's exclusion to Bangsamoro Province or whateve you may call it... Even majority of the muslims residing aren't in favor of Bangsamoro Prov... No huge demonstrations were made my Zamboanguenos living in Islamic Faith in lieu with Bangsamoro Province's support... Never... :)
