University gets P10-M laboratory

By NONOY E. LACSON

ZAMBOANGA CITY – The Department of Agriculture (DA) recently turned over a P10-million Tissue Culture Laboratory to the Western Mindanao State University’s (WMSU’s) College of Agriculture that aims to produce disease-free planting materials and mass produce planting materials in the Zamboanga Peninsula (Region 9).

Agriculture Region 9 Executive Director Oscar O. Parawan Friday said the laboratory was turned over to the WMSU through Dr. Grace Rebollos for use at its College of Agriculture in San Ramon, this city.

Rebollos also accepted all projects that were turned over to the College of Agriculture which include the Agriculture Forestry and National Resources (AFNR) facilities on Coco Sugar Processing, Rubber Nursery Area and Training Room.

Barangay San Ramon is located some 20 kilometers west of the city proper, is an agriculture community and is home to the century-old San Ramon Prison and Penal Farm.

An acceptance message was delivered by Rebollos saying “push, food security, push, productivity.”

The farm, a self-sustaining agriculture colony established by the Spanish authorities in Mindanao is the second national penitentiary established outside Metro Manila in those days.

Parawan said that the project was funded by Senator Edgardo Angara, who appropriated P10 Million in 2007 to DA under the Zamboanga Integrated Area Development Program (ZIADP) for the construction of the Tissue Culture Laboratory at the WMSU-CA.

Parawan added that “the laboratory will eventually enhance and develop the capacity and capabilities in biotechnology in the region.”

Parawan also asked the agriculture sector to make food available and affordable to people in this city and the region in general.

I attended a NDCC-sponsored Disaster Preparedness Seminar yesterday at ZCSPC, it was revealed that Zamboanga City is a tsunami prone area. According to PHIVOLCS, two trenches serves as triggering point of eartquake for the region, one is Sulu Trench and the other one is the Cotabato Trench.

The last recorder movement of the Sulu Trench was on 1897, when a 7-foot Tsunami wiped-out Zamboanga City's coastal areas.

On the other hand, Cotabato Trench last recorded movement was on 1976, when a 10 feet tsunami hit Pagadian, Basilan and Zamboanga coastal areas.

PHIVOLCS predicted that next to move will be Sulu Trench as the absence of movements manifests that the next earthquake will be substantially strong, enough to trigger a 15-meter tsunami.

The absence of earthquake in this region is not a good sign, as this means that the trench and faults within the area, accumulate stress to generate a stronger quake.

Just want to share it, for you to be prepared as well.

The reason your posts are being "moderated" is because your postcount is low. You have to meet a certain quota of posts for your account to not be moderated. But bear in mind that when a thread is closed and archived, your postcount drops because posts in archived threads are not tallied. So, my advice to you is to post in other threads (within topic and of relevance, of course) to build your postcount and to maintain it should any one of the threads be archived when it's at capacity in the future.

City’s website, best in gov’t category

The city government’s official website, www.zamboanga. gov.ph was chosen as winner in the government category in the Digital Filipino Web Awards 2009, a yearly competition among websites in the Philippines aimed to advocate the use of Internet and e-commerce for business development.

The Zamboanga City government website bested all other websites operated by local government units and agencies in the country in the award given annually by the DigitalFilipino.com whose members judge the nominations from the public in over 40 categories.

The awarding ceremony was held at the Hotel Intercontinental in Makati City November 13 as a highlight in the 2-day e-Commerce Summit 2009.
The Zamboanga City government through the Internet Committee, Computer Services Division, Public Information Division and the city website content management team under the office of Mayor Celso Lobregat, maintains www.zamboanga.gov.ph.

Prestigious website names consist the list of winners in this year’s Digital Filipino Web Awards, these include the Inquirer.net, the news website of the Philippine Daily Inquirer (best in news category); De La Salle University- Manila (best in school/ university category); Villman Computers Philippines (best in computer/ consumer electronics category); National Council on Disability Affairs (best in association/ organization category) and LevelUp! (best in corporate/ professional category) among others.

The websites were reviewed and judged “for their ability to create a noticeable presence on the Internet—their ability to be seen and heard among all the noise and clutter of the Net”, according to the award body,
Nominations were open from September 19-October 19 with the following criteria: search engine readiness—title tags, keywords and page strengths; content/ organization—clear purpose, target audience clearly defined, citation of sources whenever used, freshness, originality and accuracy of information; structure and navigation—opening page, content connection and transition, writing and conventions, ease of navigation and link usefulness; design and functionality—overall layout, colors, background and text; technical performance—page loading, browser flexibility and live links; interactivity—audience involvement and overall experience.

“The 3rd Digital Filipino.com Web Awards aims to advocate the use of Internet and e-commerce for business development, through the identification, promotion and highlighting of best e-commerce practices from various websites in the Philippines”, the DigitalFilipino web said.
City Internet Committee chair Erwin Bernardo and Computer Services Division Staff Allan Aizon received the award in Manila.

we cant realy say that it will be exact 700 meters naman kasi if daming distruction like "buildings" the force may lessen the impact  80's tsunami and 20th century impact may change because if in the 80's dami pa vacant lot around downtown and most of the houses are made of wood or nipa house less un obstacle, but 20th century structure is more concrete and steel naman and pinoy style bakod every property:lol::lol::lol::lol: so possible ma lessen un impact =)

‘I decided to return to my roots’—Beng

http://thephilsouthangle.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/img_3065.jpg

ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines/ 13 November 2009 by Ryan Sta. Teresa—- To erase all doubts and speculations concerning her oath taking as a Liberal Party member Tuesday in Manila, District I Congresswoman Beng Climaco yesterday emphasized that her decision was mainly to her “roots and the party of my family’s political heritage”.

“The clear mandate given to me by the people I represent is something that I hold dearly to my heart and I am truly grateful for. It is with these thoughts that I have decided to return to my roots and the party of my family’s political heritage - the Liberal Party”, the lady solon said in a statement.

Cong. Climaco also said her decision was made after proper consultations and thorough deliberations of the relevant issues specifically those affecting the city such as the exclusion of Zamboanga from the Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao (ARMM), the discovery of an acceptable alternative to the regional transfer of government offices, the full development of Zamboanga City as the center of commerce and industry in Western Mindanao, and the acquisition by the City of the Cabatangan Complex property.

She said: “I have decided to make it my personal mission to raise these concerns to the forefront of discussions and elevate them to the national scene in order to underscore their importance and to, once and for all, obtain the solutions that we seek”.

However, the lady solon stressed she continues to support and respect her former party, the local Laban ng Demokratikong Pilipino (LDP) under the leadership of Mayor Celso Lobergat even if she is now with the LP. “With due deference to my former party, of which I have been previously elected, I offer my deepest respects to its chairman and members and I vow to continue working closely with them and to render full support to their local line-up in the upcoming elections.

She said she believed that it is with the Liberal Party that solutions can be attain to issues that “continue to plague us and our City, and allow myself to continue being the voice of our people at the national stage.”

“To the people of Zamboanga and the District I represent, I express my immense gratitude and vow to continue my family’s service with dedication and integrity. I see in the bets of the Liberal Party a shinning ray of hope to pin our desires for the betterment of our country. As a child, I have seen my father and mother champion the cause of the LP in Zamboanga City. Now as an adult, I wish to carry on this torch so that children, like my granddaughter Tania, will have a brighter future”, she added. (Ryan Sta. Teresa)

(Ryan Sta. Teresa)

and what would be the possible alternative to the regional transfer?

US troops returns home, new ones arrive

AIR traffic involving US military planes are expected to increase within the next two weeks from and to Zamboanga City, a US military official said Sunday.

Lieutenant Senior Grade Theresa Donnelly, Joint Special Operations Task Force-Philippines (JSOTF-P) deputy public affairs officer, explained that C-17 military aircrafts are flying in and out of the city to fetch the soldiers from the 97th Civil Affairs Battalio

Donnelly said that the troops, who are based in Fort Bragg, North Carolina, are returning home after a nine-month temporary tour of duty in the Philippines.

New civil affairs' troops will be flown in as the 97th Civil Affairs Battalion personnel are being flown out of the city, Donnelly said.

The civil affairs' troops were assigned to the JSOTF-P and have assisted the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and local government units (LGUs) in undertaking humanitarian works.

They have helped construct 41 schools, water wells, roads, and buildings for the LGUs and other infrastructure projects in Central Mindanao and Sulu provinces.

They also repaired and renovated several dilapidated schools and other infrastructures.

The US civil affair's troops also conducted 68 medical and dental civic action programs, providing free medical and dental care to thousands of Filipinos.

"It's been a pleasure and honor serving the land of my birth. I wish all our Filipino friends a better and more peaceful future," 97th Civil Affairs Battalion commander Maj. Matt Marbella said.

Marbella also greeted in advance Merry Christmas and a prosperous new year to all the folks they have served during their nine-month stint in Mindanao.

"I am so proud of these soldiers for their outstanding efforts supporting the AFP with development projects and training. They have been working non-stop to assist the AFP, making a difference in the community and contributing to peace and development in Mindanao," JSOTF-P commander Col. William Coultrup said.

"Although the personnel may be changing out, our mission to support the AFP with information sharing, capacity building and civil-military operations remains the same," Coultrup added. (Bong Garcia)

terracotta figures were discovered in 1974 by some local farmers near Xi'an, Shaanxi province, China near the Mausouleum of the second Ming Emperor.

The figures vary in height (183–195 cm - 6ft–6ft 5in), according to their role, the tallest being the generals. The figures include strong warriors, chariots, horses, officials, acrobats, strongmen, and musicians. Current estimates are that in the three pits containing the Terracotta Army there were over 8,000 soldiers, 100 chariots with 400 horses and 300 cavalry horses, the majority of which are still buried in the pits.

The Terracotta Army was discovered in 1974 in the eastern suburbs of Xi'an, Shaanxi Province by local farmers drilling a water well 1.5 miles east of Lishan (a mountain).[2] This discovery prompted archaeologists to proceed to Shaanxi Province, China to investigate. The Terracotta Army is a form of funerary art buried with the First Emperor of Qin (Qin Shi Huang, Shi Huang means the first emperor) in 210-209 BC (he declared himself the first emperor of China in 221 BC to the end of his life in 210 BC). Their purpose was to help rule another empire with Shi Huang Di in the afterlife. Consequently, they are also sometimes referred to as "Qin's Armies." Mount Lishan is also where the material to make the terracotta warriors originated. In addition to the warriors, an entire man-made necropolis for the emperor has been excavated.

According to the historian Sima Qian (145-90 BC) construction of this mausoleum began in 246 BC and involved 700,000 workers. Qin Shi Huang was thirteen when construction began (he specifically stated that no two soldiers were to be made alike, which is most likely why he had construction started at that young age) . Sima Qian, in his most famous work, Shiji, completed a century after the mausoleum completion, wrote that the First Emperor was buried with palaces, scenic towers, officials, valuable utensils and 'wonderful objects,' with 100 rivers fashioned in mercury and above this heavenly bodies below which he wrote were 'the features of the earth.' Some translations of this passage refer to 'models' or 'imitations' but in fact he does not use those words.[3] Recent scientific work at the site has shown high levels of mercury in the soil on and around Mount Lishan, appearing to add credence to the writing of ancient historian Sima Qian. The tomb of Shi Huang Di is under an earthen pyramid 76 meters tall and nearly 350 square meters. The tomb remains unopened, in the hope that it will remain intact. Only a portion of the site is presently excavated.

Qin Shi Huang’s necropolis complex was constructed to serve as an imperial compound or palace. It comprises several offices, halls and other structures and is surrounded by a wall with gateway entrances.

It was also said as a legend that the Terracotta Warriors were real soldiers, buried with Emperor Qin so that they could defend him from any dangers in the next life.

Rep. Tony Cerilles raises the hands of Vice Mayor Mannix Dalipe, Asec. Monsi Dela Cruz, Atty. James Enriquez, Councilors Juan Climaco Elago, Mel Sadain, Jawo Jimenez, Atty. Rommel Agan, Rudy Bayot and Caju Cajucom after they were nominated by the Nationalist People's Coalition for the 2010 polls.

It’s Mannix-Monsi tandem in 2010 polls under NPC

In an unprecedented turn of events, the new opposition stalwarts in Zamboanga city decided to unite their forces to go head on against the group of Mayor Celso Lobregat in the 2010 elections.

Vice Mayor Mannix Dalipe, Crisanto “Monsi” Dela Cruz, Atty. James Enriquez and Atty. Juan Climaco Elago will lead the opposition ticket in the 2010 polls under the Nationalist People’s Coalition (NPC) of business tycoon Danding Cojuangco.

In an interview, Dalipe revealed that they already have the certificate of nomination from the NPC for him to run for the position of mayor, Dela Cruz for vice mayor, Elago for congressman of District 2 and the founder of Puede si Quiere, Enriquez, will run for congressman of District 10.

Dalipe said he did not commit to join any presidential candidate as of yet because none of those he talked to was able to give him a straight commitment on his conditions.

Earlier, Dalipe said that on top of his list of conditions before committing his support to any presidential candidate is an assurance that Zamboanga City will be totally protected from the Bangsamoro Juridical Entity (BJE) or any other autonomous entities that may arise from the national government’s peace negotiations with the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF).

He said the exclusion of Zamboanga city from any autonomous body that may be created is non-negotiable and that any presidential candidate who may want to take him in their line-up should first adhere to his conditions for the protection of his hometown.

“None of those I talked to were able to give me a clear assurance that they will protect Zamboanga City from the BJE. So I would rather run without a presidential candidate than compromise the safety of our hometown,” Dalipe stressed.

Asked if he is still open to affiliate with a presidential candidate for the 2010 elections, Dalipe said “it depends on the presidentiables. They know what we want for Zamboanga City if they win, if they can commit, then we are also willing to commit. As of now, we have a very good party, and our respective machineries will formally merge very soon. It’s all systems go and Zamboanga city will be great again.”

Meanwhile, Dalipe said “I am very thankful to Monsi Dela Cruz, Councilor Elago and Atty. James Enriquez for setting aside their own personal interests for the sake of the people of Zamboanga. These are the kind of leaders Zamboanga City needs, those who are willing to put aside their personal interests for a greater good. Monsi is risking his job as Presidential Assistant because of this coalition. Councilor Elago on the other hand, set aside his personal preference to run for vice mayor. Atty. Enriquez is also risking his security of tenure in the government service for a higher cause. I am also putting my career on the line in facing Mayor Lobregat even though I still have two terms left as vice mayor. All of us should make sacrifices if we truly care for our city. This is a very strong coalition and this is going to be the party to beat in the 2010 elections.”

Dalipe said they already have a complete line-up for councilors and that he will reveal their names soon. “I assure you, they will all be very good and independent minded councilors. No quiere yo chene pet (I don’t want to have a pet).” Dalipe said smiling.

Sabor De Alegria
-Mirage

Pensa Bonamente si Kosa ay Muda
Bien manada hente cla ay ta mira
este el noche para man alegria
Lama conel barkada y ponde banda
Por pabor no bishya
Prikura keda alegre ulvida el maga Problema
Kay kere lang kame...
Pruba..
El sabor del Alegria..

Uwi ustedes mi cancion
Ya ase yo este contodo mi corazon..
Nomas ulvida..
Maskin kosa pa ay pasa...
Ariba Zamboanga kita ..
Ay Grita..

2nd verse

Este ciudad quida
no abusa igual kosa ta ase el otro
Man huntu huntu kita
Usa el wisho para keda buen Zamboangenio
No ostedes kebra
El buen nombre del Zamboanga
Numa kita ase malo..
Kay kere lang kame...
Pruba ...
El sabor del Alegria..

Chorus...

Refrain.. Chorus.. Ariba Zamboanga kita ay Grita..til fade..

Sabor de Alegria Originally used at the Battle of the bands competition by Poloy. The song remained unnoticed. Until lyrics and vocal tune edited by JayR. and added flares by Mirage rhytm section Allan brings the lively keyboard sound, Marlon incorporates timely tune of the bass, Pox brings the original signature of the guitars and drumbeat and new tempo by Edgar.. All this to fit the Zamboanga Song and so we decided to record the First modern Zamboanga Song of our generation for Zamboangenios to sing. enjoi.

Migration ‘contributes to population growth’

By Bong Garcia

MIGRATION of people from nearby provinces is the major contributory factor to Zamboanga City’s population growth, a local official said.

City Social Welfare and Development Officer (CSWDO) Francisco Barredo said Zamboanga City’s birth rate has remained steady at 3.56 percent annually since 1995.

He said the migrants are from Zamboanga del Sur, Zamboanga del Norte, Zamboanga Sibugay, Basilan, Sulu, Tawi-Tawi, and as far as Visayas and Luzon areas.

Most of the migrants from the Visayas and Luzon areas are members of the military and police forces who settled together with their families in the city upon retirement from the service.

Barredo said the city’s population in 1995 was 511,139 and grew by 90,655 to 601,794 in 2000 based on the census conducted by the National Statistics Office (NSO).

Barredo said the latest survey conducted by the NSO showed that the city’s population has increased to 774,000 or with an increase of 172,206.

He said employment and livelihood opportunities are the main reasons most people from nearby provinces have migrated to Zamboanga City as it is the trade and commerce hub of the region.

Barredo foresees the need for de-urbanization to decentralize the population in the city’s outskirts, noting the seven-kilometer radius is heavily populated.

ahhh meaning mayamn ung Pinoy hahahah kung saan saan nakatira

yeah like what did this article said^^

Zambo’s annual population growth remains steady since ’96 – CSWDO

ZAMBOANGA CITY (PNA) – The annual population growth of this southern port city has remained steady at 3.56 percent for the past 14 years or since 1996, according to a local government official.

According to Francisco Barredo, an officer of the City Social Welfare and Development Officer (CSWDO) here, this city’s population in 1995 was 511,139.

Barredo said results of the 2000 census conducted by the National Statistics Office (NSO) showed that this city had a total population of 601,794 – registering an increase of 90,655.

The latest survey conducted by the NSO showed that this city’s population has increased to 774,000, or with an increase of 172,206, Barredo said.
He said migration of people from nearby provinces has contributed much to the rapid population increase of this southern port city, citing the birth rate remains steady at 3.56 percent annually.

He said that the migrants are from Zamboanga del Sur, Zamboanga del Norte, Zamboanga Sibugay, Basilan, Sulu, Tawi-Tawi and as far as from the Visayas and Luzon areas.

Most of the migrants from the Visayas and Luzon areas are members of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and Philippine National Police (PNP) who settle together with their families in this city upon retirement from the service.

While employment and livelihood opportunities are the main reasons why most people from nearby provinces have migrated to this city as it is the trade and commerce hub of the region, Barredo said.

As this developed, Barredo foresees the need for de-urbanization to decentralize the population in this southern port city’s outskirts, noting the seven-kilometer radius is now heavily populated.

the reason y i empasize sibugay kasi malaki talaga un bawas ng pop nila.

Most of the Visayas and Luzon migrants usualy choose zamboanga to live for several reason 1. Cheap lifestyle, 2. Business, 3. thier relatives are from zamboanga and they them self choose to stay along.

774,000 is the registered pop with 100,000+ registered migrants how about un unregistered since zamboanga is the back gat of pinas, and more and more pinoy from malaysia who cannot show proper document is deported in zamboanga^^

Trivia;

Did you know the other province of Zamboanga Del Norte, most of the student who likes to take thier college year prefered Zamboanga City like LILOY, LABASON, SIOCON, etc.

but some of Zamboanga Students whould likely choose MANILA, CEBU, DUMAGUETE AND DAVAO for thier college years^^
