Anyway, here's an add to the doses of good newsies circulating all over La Bella Zamboanga!!!

The soon-to-be-finished Paseo del Mar Redevelopment Project will culminate on Oct.1, 2010.... And as I've heard from a grapevine, Mano2x na Greenfield Restaurant and Chintio's Cafe will be two of the four total new tenants in addition to the present ones...

They will be housed in newer and bigger stalls with latin/hispanic architectural design, symbolizing the strong hispanic/latin character of La Bella Zamboanga!! And I say, Yeabahhh!!!

And that new set of good news that everyone in SSC are free to eavesdrop has brought to you by, Cafe del Sol's/Avio del Mar's Eat-All-You-Can-Man for 150pesos only!!! Available on Fridays,Saturdays, & Sundays!:banana::banana:

Hmmm... I have noticed that there are less and less people chillin' at paseo del mar each time I visit. Seems like the place is slowly dying. Will try to confirm if mano2x will indeed open up a branch here. :)

^^ The answer: Precisely! The first concessionaire upon entering the main entrance of PDM! It's mainly a coffeeshop, that is now into eat-all-you-can dinner buffet every Friday,Saturday and Sunday nights!

In lieu with Phase 3 Project of PDM, As claimed by my HS classmate who happens to be one of the very few engineers taking charge of the project! A WMSU professional alumna. Why? She sees the project area to the extent of having an overtime till 11PM. Her official work starts at 8AM.

Accordingly, Mayor Lobregat ordered them to finish the redevelopment project until this Friday, September 24, only. Pero she doubts the deadline will be met. She added, by October 1, 100% COMPLETE NA ANG PROJECT, FROM A to Zinc!

Asia’s Latin City gears for 2010 Hermosa Festival

Zamboanga City gears up for a full blast celebration of Hermosa Festival 2010 in October in commemoration of the feast of Nuestra Senora de la Virgen del Pilar, patron saint of Zamboanga, Asia’s Latin City.

Themed “Celebracion en grande..Adelante, Zamboanga”, the city’s grandest festival highlights the city’s unique blend of multi-cultural heritage. It is an all encompassing and complete festival that culminates on the 12th day of October, the feast day of the Nuestra Senora de La Virgen del Pilar, the city’s most revered patron saint.

WOW Zamboanga, a showcase of the best of the best of the 98 barangays will be held nightly at the Paseo del Mar from 6 pm onwards starting October 1-8; the trade fair and exhibit will run from Oct. 1-15 at the Plaza Pershing and an art exhibit featuring Zamboangueno talents will be held from Oct. 1-31 at the Garden Orchid Hotel.

Other events include the 27th chabacano song festival; dance sport competition year 8; Wow Sardinas, Lifestyle Zamboanga; Mascota competition; Mayor Celso Lobregat Golf Tournament Year 6; Regatta de Zamboanga; floral float parade; street dance competition and the main program on October 11 with Tourism Secretary Albert Lim as guest of honor.

Spicing up the celebrating are the different events sponsored by private groups and individuals that include the Sarah Geronimo Concert on Oct. 1 at the Summit Center, Miss Zamboanga Pageant, Little Miss Universe-2010 competition, Open Motocross exhibition and competition, Night Market at the La Vista del Mar from Oct. 5-9 and many more.

“These different events intend to give honor, pay our homage and extend our gratitude for the benevolence and generosity of Our Lady”, Zamboanga Mayor Celso Lobregat explained.

“Please come witness and take part in the celebration, visit the booths, hang out in the parks, watch the shows and presentations. But amid the fun and excitement, the parties and the merriment, let us find time to reflect and thank the Lord Almighty and Nuestra Senora La Virgen del Pilar for the many blessings and for the guidance and protection all through the years”, the mayor said.

Hermosa Festival 2010 will not only be sizzling with fun-filled gimmicks for this year but will also be marked as “D-day” for two exciting add-ons: the completion of the improvement phase of the city’s most popular attraction-the Paseo del Mar and the opening of the newest pasalubong center-the Plaza del Pilar.

Inaugurated last July 2009, Paseo del Mar is the all-time favorite hangout, not only for the Zamboangueños, but for domestic and international tourists and excursionists as well. It has been a hot spot for a number of programs, concerts and merrymaking that is continuously drawing overwhelming reception from patrons of all ages.

This festive month of October, Paseo del Mar will further be re-enforced with four additional stalls as sequel to its improvement phase, making up a total of 14 stalls with a wider variety of food-and-beverage cravings to choose from. It will also be groomed with permanent comfort rooms and wider pavement for better paseo experience.

Adjacent to this two-hectare recreational park is another attraction to reckon with-the Plaza del Pilar. It is reputed as the first all-in-one pasalubong center with 56 stalls to cater goodies, devotional items and souvenir merchandises that are truly Zamboangueño.

Plaza del Pilar derived its name from the historical Fort Pilar, being the immediate significant landmark where the more than 7,000 square meters plaza is located. Its European-inspired architectural design complements the renowned fort which is more than three hundred years old.

Mayor Celso Lobregat is optimistic in inaugurating Plaza del Pilar and other developments in Paseo del Mar during the Hermosa Festival which runs in the whole month of October, with the 12th day as the Feast of the Nuestra Señora del Pilar. He is personally and constantly monitoring the project to fast track its operation.

It is during his administration when sites of interest were developed and constructed like Paseo del Mar and Plaza del Pilar. These accomplishments provide a rendezvous of excitement for Zamboangueños and other visitors even beyond the celebration of any festival that Asia’s Latin City is frenzied about.

These accomplishments provide a rendezvous of excitement for Zamboangueños and other visitors even beyond the celebration of any festival that Asia’s Latin City is frenzied about.

this is a BIG FESTIVAL EVENTfor every zamboanguenio in the city... hope mainvite ni major or ni congresswoman si P-NOY sa celebration sa hermosa festival to witnessed its development and potential of the city...:lol::lol:

Zamboanga City gears up for Hermosa Festival 2010

(The Philippine Star) Updated September 26, 2010 12:00 AM Comments (0) View comments

MANILA, Philippines – Zamboanga City gears up for a full-blast celebration of Hermosa Festival 2010 in October to mark the feast of Nuestra Señora de la Virgen del Pilar, patroness of Zamboanga, Asia’s Latin City.

With the theme “Celebracion en grande, Adelante, Zamboanga (Grand celebration, forward Zamboanga),” the city’s grandest festival highlights its unique blend of multi-cultural heritage.

It is an all encompassing and complete festival that culminates on the 12th day of October, the feast day of Nuestra Señora de La Virgen del Pilar, the city’s most revered patroness.

Zamboanga City Mayor Celso Lobregat said WOW Zamboanga, a showcase of the best of the best of the city’s 98 barangays, will be held nightly at the Paseo del Mar seaside promenade from 6 p.m. onwards from Oct. 1 to 8; a trade fair and exhibit on Oct. 1-15 at the Plaza Pershing; and an art exhibit featuring Zamboangueño talents on Oct. 1-31 at the Garden Orchid Hotel.

Other events include the 27th Chabacano Song Festival; a dance sport competition year 8; the Wow Sardinas, Lifestyle Zamboanga; the Mascota competition; the Mayor Celso Lobregat Golf Tournament Year 6; Regatta de Zamboanga; floral float parade; street dance competition and the main program on Oct. 11 with Tourism Secretary Albert Lim as guest of honor.

Lobregat said he is inviting Filipinos to visit Zamboanga City during the Hermosa Festival. “Please come witness and take part in the celebration, visit the booths, hang out in the parks, watch the shows and presentations,” Lobregat said.

“But amid the fun and excitement, the parties and the merriment, let us find time to reflect and thank the Lord Almighty and Nuestra Señora de La Virgen del Pilar for the many blessings and for the guidance and protection all through the years,” he said.

“These different events intend to give honor, pay our homage and extend our gratitude for the benevolence and generosity of Our Lady,” Lobregat added.

Spicing up the celebration are the different events sponsored by private groups and individuals that include the Sarah Geronimo concert on Oct. 1 at the Summit Center, Miss Zamboanga Pageant, Little Miss Universe-2010 competition, Open Motocross exhibition and competition, Night Market at the La Vista del Mar on Oct. 5-9 and many more.

Meanwhile, former Western Mindanao regional tourism director Ric San Juan announced that this year’s Hermosa Festival will include activities specially dedicated to the Zamboangueño balikbayans, overseas workers and returning “compoblanos” from other cities and provinces nationwide.

San Juan, who is now the coordinator of the Vamos a Zamboanga group, said these are the Fiesta Zamboangueño Balikbayan Night, a project of Rep. Beng Climaco-Salazar, on Oct. 9 at the Rigodon Ballroom of Hacienda de Palmeras, and the Vamos a Zambofreeport discovery tour of the Zamboanga City Special Economic Zone Authority on Oct. 10.

Hermosa Festival 2010 will not only be sizzling with fun-filled gimmicks this year but will also be marked as “D-day” for two exciting add-ons: the completion of the improvement phase of the city’s most popular attraction, the Paseo del Mar, and the opening of the newest pasalubong center, the Plaza del Pilar.

Go Hotels: Back to basics
By Maria Jorica B. Pamintuan (The Philippine Star) Updated September 12, 2010 12:00 AM

MANILA, Philippines - What can P400 buy these days? A new pair of shoes, maybe, or the latest paperback bestseller. There are a number of possibilities, but a night’s stay at a decent hotel may not be one of them — until now.

Imagine an air-conditioned room, with a 22-inch LCD television, and free wireless Internet access for only P388 a night. It’s a dream made a reality by Go Hotels.

Dubbed the first chain of value hotels in the Philippines, Go Hotels has a variable pricing scheme much like Cebu Pacific’s budget fares. With this system, booking early will result in a lower rate for a room, while walk-ins will be charged a higher fee.
Guests have four breakfast options: (clockwise, from top left) Go Fish (boneless bangus with rice and egg), Go Healthy (yogurt, cereals and fruits), Go Pinoy (beef tapa with rice and egg), and Go West (ham, egg and cheese with fries).

Early bookings can be charged as low as P388, while walk-ins can be charged as much as P1,888 for an overnight stay.

“What we have done is to give you everything that is important to a traveler and excluded everything that you hate or that you don’t really need — for example, the mini-bar that you don’t even touch anyway. We don’t provide you with extra extras that you have to pay for, but you don’t really need,” said Frederick Go, president of Robinsons Land Corp., at the grand launch of Go Hotels last Sept. 3.

Go Hotels has no frills. No mini-bar, no room service, and no bottles of shampoo. There is no telephone, but there is an intercom in every room.

What the hotel does provide is a one-use sachet of shampoo, a tiny one-use bar of soap, two bath towels, and a choice between chiropractic-contoured pillows and hypoallergenic fiber-filled pillows, said Liz Gregorio, general manager of Go Hotels.

She added that every yellow and green-themed room has either twin beds or one queen-sized bed. Rooms also have a desk, and both a rainshower and handheld showerhead. Chairs come with the desk in rooms with a queen-sized bed.
Each Go Hotels’ room is equipped with quality bed with choice of hypoallergenic fiber-filled pillows or chiropractic-contoured pillows and offers Wi-Fi and use of safety de-posit box.

But perhaps one of the most important considerations in staying in a hotel is the bathroom. Go Hotels’ toilets are top of the line, and the bathroom is spacious.

Another consideration is eating inside the rooms. Gregorio said the practice is discouraged partly to keep the rooms clean.

“Every floor, the 5th and the 6th, where the rooms are, has an eating area with seats and tables in the lobby,” she said, adding that the eating areas have a seating capacity of 30 to 50 people, and that they never have a problem because the guests don’t eat at the same time.

Guests aren’t complaining either. An American visiting the Philippines is staying at the hotel, and he said, “The staff is doing good. I have no problems with the hotel.”

Indeed, the staff members in their yellow and green-collared shirts were very attentive and helpful. The staff attire at the hotel is casual and breeds an atmosphere that makes the hotel employees seem very approachable.

“We are very confident and positive about this development that we hope to take this around the country,” said Frederick Go, adding that Robinsons Land Corp. is planning to open hotels in every province in the country to address the huge demand and lack of proper accommodation for travelers.

Pasig City Mayor Benjamin Abalos Jr., in his speech at the hotel launch, said Go Hotels is promoting local tourism by offering such cheap rates.

“People will flock to the provinces instead of going abroad,” he said, adding that in the wake of the tragedy at the Quirino Grandstand, “We must help our country.”

The first branch of Go Hotels is located at the fifth and sixth floors of the 17-story Robinsons Cybergate Plaza, beside Robinsons Mall Pioneer, along EDSA.

Robinsons Land Corp. is planning to open 30 more hotels in the next five years, starting with branches in Bacolod and Dumaguete in 2011, Palawan, Iloilo, Davao, Tacloban, and Cebu in 2012, and Ilocos Norte, Butuan, Zamboanga, General Santos, and Pangasinan in 2013.

Akala ko local lang ang TiaNINA Pizza & Pasta, may mga stores din pala sila sa ibang parts ng Mindanao. Take a look at these pictures of their menu na nakuha ko from a friend's album on Facebook. (The photos come from Kikay Rañin's FB account. Kikay was a host of the defunct local TV show of ABS-CBN, Zambo Jambo.)

Yep yep. It's like Vitali of Zamboanga City because of its location. But unlike Vitali, Toril has branches of Jollibee and Chowking. :colgate:

Celso leads Ayuda Limpiesa today

by Sheila Covarrubias

Ayuda Limpiesa, a massive cleanup drive at the public market and downtown streets, will be held today in celebration of Tourism Week.

Mayor Celso Lobregat will spearhead the activity in coordination with the different city departments, government agencies and other volunteer groups in a bid to remind market stall occupants and market goers and the residents in general of the need to maintain cleanliness and sanitation not to help promote tourism but also to prevent the occurrence of diseases such as dengue fever.

The activity will kick off with a brief program starting at 7:30a.m. at the Sunken Garden in front of City Hall.

Organized by the City Tourism Division under the Office of the City Mayor, the clean up drive is the culminating activity for Tourism Week celebration in the city that kicked off Sept. 20 with the 2010 Drum and Lyre tilt and end on Sept. 27, World Tourism Day.

Excuse me, location and distance-wise, Vitali is not comparable to Toril. Toril is just 15 kms away to the west from DC proper just like Recodo is from pueblo. While Vitali is 75 kms away from pueblo to the northeast, which is even further than Tagum city from Davao City. What I mean is, for a purpose of comparison, Toril District in DC is the equivalent of Ayala District in ZC, but soon Toril will have a busy Felcris while Ayala (I just do not exactly know about Dreamville).

@zoro, Vitali has the pace equivalent to that of Kabasalan or Buug in ZSP, only the city government's attention is lacking for it to surpass even Ipil. According to my ancestors, Vitali and Ipil were just at the same pace during the "Logging Era".

Excuse me too but I wasn't referring to the numeric measurement of the distance of the two places from their respective cities' main business districts. What I meant by the word location was that they're both located near the frontiers of their respective cities. Please don't make conclusions about vague or broad stuff without first consulting the people who posted them. I hope I made myself clear. Gracias.

O.K. granted. But I just made a comment to make a vague thing clearer as it was misleading to those who do not know about ZC's geography. And personally, I never wanted to compare my Vitali to a District in DC, I want it to be compared to Panabo or at least Carmen in DN. I hope my point is also taken as clear. Let peace prevail. Muchas gracias.

If this Barangays were empowered properly with the right support from the city government, Vitali have already gone far compared to its present status now. Ipil is just like that before. But when the new province was created and Ipil was made capital, there was a drastic increase in the economic activity of the town thereby contributing to the alleviating its status.

I think the comparison plays around the role of the mentioned barangays in the city's economic activity and not merely on how far is it from the city's center.

Don't lose faith and hope. For the time being, ZC is not yet that strong to make things happen as we expect. But for some gut feeling, when every Zamboangueño supports my 4th line signature (see below), that dream is not far away from us.

We are already strong. We are one of the Billionnaire Cities. However, due to the mismanagement of Celso and his gang, we lagged behind in terms of performance and competetiveness.

With all due respect, I don't trust this people. These are the people who are responsible of the preventing Zamboanga to soar great hieghts. They are notorious of enacting elitist and anti-poor policies. These people don't deserve to be in the halls of the upper chamber. Uhhm, you have high points, but I would like to give it a try for Celso or Erbie or both in 2013. DTI gets ISO certification

Monday, September 27, 2010

THE Certification International Philippines Inc. has conferred the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) in Zamboanga Peninsula its International Standards Organization (ISO 9001:2008) certification in simple ceremony Friday.

Renato Navarette, managing director of the Certification International Philippines Inc., personally turned over the certificate to DTI officials in the region.

Post your reaction to the Manila hostage crisis

Nazrullah Manzur, DTI regional director, said the awarding is the culmination of almost two years of painstaking efforts to come up with a quality management system that finally withstood the rigorous assessment process and found to be in full conformity with the ISO standards.

He said the ISO certification is a major milestone for the Zamboanga Peninsula office and should translate to better services to its external and internal customers.

“The quality policy we drafted ourselves states that, we the DTI-Zamboanga Peninsula Team commit to champion business and consumers. That we shall help build an enabling environment for business to grow and for consumers to get best value for money as we foster professionalism, integrity and competence among ourselves in the DTI. And that we shall improve continually our quality management system to deliver better, faster and more efficient services to our clients,” Manzur said.

“This quality policy shall be our guiding principle. The Polaris or the North Star that shall guide us as we navigate from day-to-day in our quest to satisfy our customers with the quality of services that we deliver,” he added.

In his message to DTI-Zamboanga Peninsula personnel, Manzur stressed the need to be client-focused.

“Let us be reminded always that our customers are our raison d'être…our reason for existence as an agency of government. And that we shall strive to further improve our processes and services as we adhere to the kaizen principle of continuous improvement,” he said.

Manzur, however, reminded employees not to forget that this awarding of ISO certificate is not an end by itself but rather a "significant step for a new beginning of our journey towards excellence in public service."

“Let us not rest on our laurels lest we be overcome by the law of inertia as our natural selves are wont to do. But let this added feather on our cap be a reason for momentum rather than lethargy, complacency or worse of all, of misplaced pride on our achievements,” Manzur said. >(Bong Garcia)

Honestly, I like it better this way.... leaving the old stuff behind and becoming more modern. It's time we move on. We can't always hold on to the past. It's time we make festivals and celebrations more classy. :) Well, this is just my own opinion anyway. :colgate:

Celso sets Plaza Pilar soft opening Oct. 1st

Mayor Celso Lobregat is finalizing plans for the soft opening of the Plaza del Pilar, the city's newest pasalubong center on Friday, October 1st kicking off celebration of 2010 Zamboanga Hermosa Festival. The plaza, located across the Fort Pilar Shrine, is now being spruced up for the event. Demolition crew from the City Engineer's Office (CEO) yesterday cleared the scaffoldings that have been established around the area during the construction period.
Makeshift candle stalls constructed around the Fort Pilar area were also demolished yesterday paving the way for the transfer of the candle vendors to their designated stalls in Plaza del Pilar.
Mayor Lobregat said while the soft opening will be held on Friday, the candle vendors have started selling their wares and other items yesterday.
The grand opening is set on or before the Fiesta Pilar celebration on the 12th of October which is expected to be graced by Tourism Secretary Albert LIm.
An ordinance regulating the plaza's operation has been approved by the City Council. (Sheila Covarrubias)

A lot better. :) It's better to let people from developed countries handle local industries that have long been in existence but have not yet shown evident progress than to be very patriotic and only let local folks get hold of them even though it's very obvious that they've become stagnant or have slowly been deteriorating. At least we know that these foreign people's funds and experience from back home can help make pearl out of ordinary sands. :)

That's very unwise. If there's an existing government owned and public facility, there is no point of privatizing this. This will take the hands of the government from regulating the activity of the facility.

Zambo City gears up for opening of newest Pasalubong Center

Zamboanga City (28 September) -- In time for the town fiesta celebration on October 12, the city gears up for the soft opening of Plaza del Pilar- the latest souvenir center in town.

The opening on Friday, Oct. 1 marks the start of the week-long celebration of the 2010 Zamboanga Hermosa Festival. City Information Officer Sheila Covarrubias said the grand opening is set on or before the Fiesta Pilar celebration on the 12th of this month with no less than Tourism Secretary Albert Lim expected to grace the occasion.

The Plaza is located across the miraculous shrine of Fort Pilar. It is adjacent to the 2-hectare recreational park & tourist nest Paseo del Mar.

The Plaza del Pilar according to Ms. Covarrubias is a one-stop-shop pasalubong center with 56 stalls/locators in the pasalubong zone.

Locators of the center will showcase and sell goodies, devotional items and souvenir commodities of what Zamboanga and Zamboangueños are known for. The active info officer also said a portion of the area will accommodate various offices such as the Zamboanga Chamber of Commerce and Industry Foundation Inc., and some law offices.

Plaza del Pilar according to Ms. Covarrubias got its name from the renowned 300 year-old Fort Pilar shrine, being the immediate significant land mark where the more than 7,000 square meters plaza is located. (JPAlvarez-PIAZC)

DILG chief issues memorandum banning politicians' names, images on billboards
Thursday, 30 September 2010 11:19

http://zamboangatoday.ph/images/stories/dsc00364s.jpg

Department of Interior and Local Government Secretary Jesse Robredo issued a directive to provincial governors, city mayors, municipal mayors, presiding officers of local Sangguniangs at all levels, regional governor of ARMM, and other officials concerned banning public officials from placing their names or photos on billboards of government infrastructure projects.

In Memorandum Circular No. 2010 - 101, which was issued September 23, 2010, Secretary Robredo said the practice of putting up billboards or signages bearing the names, initials and images of government officials on government programs and projects has been noticeably abused and misused by some public officials for their personal interests.

"And (it) has taken the credit away from the taxpayers who are the ones paying for such programs or projects through their tax payment," Robredo said in the memo.

In pursuit of the President's directive issued during the 4th Cabinet Meeting held on August 5, 2010, where he directed all members of the Cabinet and government instrumentalities to refrain from associating the President's personality and identity in their programs and projects, and pursuant to the Department's thrush to uphold good local governnance, the practice is hereby prohibited.

It has been observed that some Local Government Unit (LGU) officials, particularly the governors, mayors, and lawmakers, abused their authority by putting the names and images on all billboards, signages, and other information materials or government properties, including firetrucks, ambulances, and vehicles.

"Towards this end, all local Chief Executives are hereby directed to revisit all government projects and properties and to ensure that this policy is strictly observed," Secretary Robredo's memo continued.

Thus, according to the DILG chief, the information on government projects should be limited to the name of the project and location, contractor, the date when it started and the projects completion date. Further, government projects or properties (i.e , buildings, waiting sheds, markers, etc.) and official vehicles must only contain the official seal or name of the LGU.

Contact details, such as but not limited to the website address or email address of the local government unit, may also be allowed. The words "FOR OFFICIAL USE ONLY" should likewise be marked on government vehicles. "All DILG Regional Directors and the ARMM Regional Governor are likewise directed to cause the immediate and widest dissemination of this Memorandum Circular to all local government units wsithin their regional assignments, and to monitor compliance of the Memorandum Circular."

Business Chamber endorses installation of cctv cameras
Thursday, 30 September 2010 11:23

http://zamboangatoday.ph/images/stories/topstories/sdc13924df.jpg

The Zamboamga City Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ZCCCI) yesterday strongly endorsed the putting up of surveillance cameras in strategic places in Zamboanga City to effectively help the authorities fight criminality.

ZCCCI president Cholo Soliven reiterated the chamber's call after the conduct of the symposium dubbed "Business Safety and Security in Zamboanga City" held Tuesday night at the Grand Astoria Hotel.

"In fact two years ago, the chamber under former president James Makasiar had already formally passed a resolution endorsing the city government to set up CCTV cameras in strategic places of the city. More than ever, we need these cameras now," Soliven said.

The chamber head also explained no less than Gen. Trifornio Salazar, husband of Congresswoman Isabelle Climaco, who is the National Intelligence Coordinating Agency (NICA) chief is asking businessmen in the city to also put up surveillance cameras outside their officee and residences to help them capture video footages of suspicious-looking characters within the vicinity.

At least 30 businessmen in the city joined the symposium in coordination with MEC Network System, a Manila based company that deals in High Definition (HD) surveillance camera system.

MEC Network System, Engr. Romi Baldo said business is always at risk and in order to eliminate that risk, businessmen should inject video information technology for monitoring and solution capability.

Baldo said their company is offering High Definition cameras which is five times better than analog cameras.

As this developed, SPO3 Edwin Duco lectured the entrepreneurs on anti-kidnapping while SPO3 Vicente Morales talked about bomb awareness and identification topics.

PESCA KITA can be the annual tourism activity that will lead ZC to have the cleanest and most "alive" shorelines and seas. Very good initiative. Imagine if as the years go by and the fish population in the vicinity of Paseo continue to deplete due to all sorts of deterrents, lalangawin ang PESCA. Dapat in connection, ZC council will legislate control measures. I'd like to participate in PESCA few years from now and dapat onshore pa lang tig- 10 kg na ang mga huli. hehehee...

Gerry’s last hurrah for The Dream

Former two division world champion Gerry Peñalosa will make his ring return this October 10 at the at the Zamboanga City Coliseum in Zamboanga City against Yodsaenkeng Kietmangmee of Thailand. In a telephone interview, Peñalosa said that this will be his last fight and the proceeds of this bout will be given to Z “The Dream” Gorres to help him with his medical expenses.

“I want to help my friend Z. He is recovering well but is still spending a lot for his medical bills. He underwent surgery again recently.” Peñalosa was referring to the series of medical operations on Gorres’ throat.

Every Filipino is familiar with the story of Gorres, who was sidelined by a career-ending brain injury when he fought Colombian Luis Melendez in Las Vegas in November 2009. He underwent a throat operation last February at Cebu Doctor’s Hospital due to a mass of tissue that formed in the lining of his throat. Early this month, Gorres underwent another surgery at the same hospital to correct a portion of his windpipe that had narrowed down.

Fans and sponsors are encouraged to support Peñalosa’s endeavor. Gerry’s victories gave us a reason to cheer during the pre-Pacquiao years. He was also part of the victorious 2007 Boxing World Cup squad that also saw him win his second world title against Jhonny Gonzales. Helping a friend in need would be the best ending for a career that spanned two decades.

The Filipino “Bayanihan” spirit was showcased when Gorres needed help during his stay in a Las Vegas hospital ICU. Continuing to assist him also shows the good inside every Filipino.

Kietmangmee (12W-2L, 8 KO’s), is a former lt.flyweight champion Thailand and a former WBO Youth world lt.flyweight titlist. Also appearing in this card is Gerry’s protege, Michael Fareñas, who will face South Korean Jung-Hoon Kim.

THIS year's Zamboanga Hermosa Festival, a month-long celebration that depicts the rich cultures and traditions of what is now known as Asia's Latin City, formally kicks off Friday with the theme "Celebracion En Grande...Adelante Zamboanga."

"Please come and take part in the celebration, visit the booths, hang out in the parks, watch the shows and presentation," Lobregat rallied the Zamboangueños, even as he added that "amid the fun and excitement, the parties and the merriment, let us find time to reflect and thank the Lord Almighty and the Nuestra La Virgen del Pilar for the many blessings and for the guidance and protection all through the years."

Demand for motorcycles increase
Friday, 01 October 2010 13:01

http://zamboangatoday.ph/images/stories/topstories/lto-picture---1-column.jpg

The present demand for motorcycles plying the city’s thoroughfares have tremendously increased as compared to four-wheel vehicles.

City Transportation Regulation Officer Noel Noche disclosed the registration of motorcycles has increased to six percent compared to last year.

Noche emphasized that for the whole year of 2009, his office registered 39,499 motorcycles but as of August this year, there is now a total of 30,845.

“I know there is going to be more registrations on the remaining three months of this year,” Noche stressed.

The LTO regulation officer pointed out some reasons why the demand for motorcycles has increased due to its fuel efficiency. easy access, needs small space for parking and because it's economical.

Meanwhile, Noche said LTO will not yet apprehend any motorist who are bringing with them children as back riders on board their motorcycles.
“We have not received any guidelines from LTO Manila yet with regards to the directive,” Noche declared.

Gerky cites Nature’s Spring for helping promote Zambo
Friday, 01 October 2010 13:05

Councilor Rogelio “Gerky” Valesco yesterday commended the country’s leading brand of bottle water, Nature’s Spring, for helping promote Zamboanga City on the special edition of its mineralized water bottles.

Valesco, a strong advocate for the promotion of Zamboanga’s tourism industry, said that Nature’s Spring has unveiled its special edition of bottled water, featuring a photograph of the city’s latest recreational landmark, the Plaza del Pilar, which opens to the public today in time for the kick-off of the month-long Zamboanga Hermosa Festival.

“I am delighted that the country’s leading bottled water company is helping us in promoting Zamboanga’s tourism,” Valesco said of Nature’s Spring, whose area sales supervisor, Ermyl Morones, a Zamboangueño, he met several months ago and discussed the special labeling of the firm’s special product labeling.

The councilor said that NS products are shipped from Cebu and it just but fitting that we commend the company for featuring Zamboanga’s latest landmark on its products. “This is truly a big boost to our consistent afforest at promoting Zamboanga and its tourism potentials,” he said.

Valesco is one of the principal authors of Ordinance No. 2010-158, establishing the Plaza del Pilar, which is a 7,000-sq.m-complex featuring a European-inspired architectural design on structures that house the 56 stalls catering to goodies, devotional items and other products distinctive of Zamboanga.

He expressed hope that more private groups and individuals will do what NS is doing for Zamboanga, stressing that tourism is a driving force of the city’s economy; it propels development and progress.

“The need to promote the value of an industry sector should be paramount in the strategic direction of any sustainable industry. Tourism is no different,” Valesco said, quoting a tourism planning study.

According to Valesco, the city government under the administration of Mayor Celso Lobregat is on the right track in its tourism planning as conceptualized in the City Development Strategies—that is “to develop parks, gardens and tourists’ recreational sites to further promote tourism, to create new jobs, and offer business opportunities.”

Celso invites people to Fiesta Hermosa

Personally spearheading the different events kicking off the 2010 Zamboanga Hermosa Festival yesterday, Mayor Celso Lobregat invited people from here and other parts of the country and the world to visit Zamboanga and join in the grand celebration of Fiesta Pilar this October.

The first day of the Festival started off with a blast—the Pink October Walk, a fund-raising march to support breast cancer patients; the opening of the 2-day Job Fair simultaneous with the soft opening of the new Plaza Pilar; opening of the 7th Cosechas de Zamboanga, an agri-trade fair at the Plaza Pershing; opening of the Elderly Filipino Week celebration; opening of the WOW Zamboanga Inter-barangay cluster competition at the Paseo del Mar; Miss Zamboanga pageant at the Astoria Regency and Sarah Geronimo’s “record breaker” concert at the Summit Centre in Tetuan.

“So far everything is going very well. The rain did not dampen the spirit of the participants to the different activities”, Mayor Lobregat declared cheerfully. “We are starting the Fiesta season with a very big celebration, truly un celebracion en grande”.

He said: “We are inviting everybody from here and around the globe to come, see and experience the beautiful Zamboanga, we will have series of activities that will lead up to the feast day of our Nuestra Senora de la Virgen del Pilar on October 12.”

The Plaza Pilar, the all-in-one pasalubong center, is expected to be the next attraction in Zamboanga. It is located across the Fort Pilar Shrine and only meters away from the renowned Paseo del Mar.

Various stalls are already in operation—mostly those selling candles and religious items, foodstuffs and other souvenir items.

Not to be rude or anything, but I guess you should not include the last one on your to-do list especially in a public venue like the boulevard. It would draw out nonsmokers (like me) from the place and will surely dramatically lessen the number of people participating in the tourist-attracting activities in the area. Please. Let us help bring in more tourist by not making the city a big chunk of health hazards. Thank you. :)

CENRO calls on residents near R.T. Lim Blvd. to protect shoreline
Sunday, 03 October 2010 13:55

Community Environment and Natural Resources (CENRO) West director Tito Gadon the other day called on all residents of the city to help protect the shoreline from illegal quarrying of sand and gravel.

Gadon said illegal quarrying of sand in shorelines is a violation of Batas Pambansa Blg. 265 prohibiting the quarrying of sand and gravel along the sea shores.

This, after Gadon noticed some residents living near the R.T. Lim Boulevard were getting sand and stacking inside several sacks and bringing the materials to their residence either use it for concreting or selling the same for money.

“I would like to appeal to our residents to help protect the shorelines as this will destroy the ecosystem of the ocean,” Gadon said.

The CENRO chief said based on studies, fifty percent (50%) of the oxygen that the people breath air comes from the ocean.

Gadon asked the people to help protect the environment especially the shoreline because the ocean is one source of food that we get.

“The ocean provide us with food like fish and other marine products, if we destroy it we destroy ourselves,” Gadon said.

Hundreds files COC's for Barangays, Sk election
Sunday, 03 October 2010 13:57

As the filing of the Certificate of Candidacy (COC) for the barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) started on Friday, hundreds of candidates from all over the city trooped to the Commission on Elections (COMELEC) to run this coming October 25, 2010 elections.

District 1 Election Officer, Atty. Al-Kadam Sakandal, said as of press time, a total of 115 candidates for Barangay and SK Elections filed their COCs.

Under District 1, at least 107 aspirants filed COCs for Kagawad position, while 8 for Barangay chairman and 13 for SK positions, respectively.

For District 2, according to Acting Election Officer Ador Morados, a total of 155 aspirants - 1 for barangay chairman, 133 for kagawad and 11 for SK positions - filed their COCs.

Despite the big number of aspirants, COMELEC officials still believe that the scheduled Barangay and SK Elections will be peaceful and orderly.

“Everything is in place already as we coordinated with different stakeholders, including the military and the police, with our security plan,” Sakandal said.

One of the well known figures in Zamboanga City who filed COC last Friday, the first day of COC filing, was businessman Sonny Diaz of Barangay Talisayan for Barangay chairman.

In an interview, Diaz said that prior to his final decision, he conducted consultation with the residents of Talisayan.

The Barangay chairman aspirant said he asked his constituents about the many issues and concerns affecting their barangay.

According to Diaz, the residents raised issues such as the bad smell emanating from different canning factories located in their barangay, poor service of water supply and the problem of providing vehicles for emergency purposes.

Meanwhile, Sakandal warned groups or coalition of premature political campaign, which include soliciting votes for or against candidates.

“This is tantamount to premature campaigning which is a violation under COMELEC rules,” Sakandal added.

Local election officials here expressed appreciation for those candidates who filed their COCs this early to avoid overcrowding at COMELEC office on its Oct. 13 deadline. (Monch L. Follosco)

isa sa mga main factors, I believe, is the ever-increasing population in the city.. i'm currently working in National Statistics Office IX (NSO), and we're projecting that ZC's population might stood up to a level of 800,000-900,000 population! ;)

^^di naman tau aabot ng 1 million marl?sa subrang nag mimigrate dito dumadami na ung population.....

Anyway may good news na ba about the Robinson land dito?

WOW Zamboanga draws crowd

by Sheila Covarrubias

The renowned Paseo del Mar beside the historic Fort Pilar shrine teems with people every night heating up the 2010 Zamboanga Hermosa Festival extravaganza.

The Paseo del Mar is the venue for the nightly presentations of “Wow Zamboanga”, featuring the best of the best songs and dances from the different barangays in the city.

The nightly presentations which started October 1st will run until October 8. The show starts at 7 p.m.

Wow Zamboanga is the local version of the Wow Philippines, a tourism campaign initiated by the then Tourism Secretary and now Senator Richard Gordon with the main objective of promoting tourist destinations in the country.

The Wow Zamboanga concept was initiated by the City Tourism Division under the Mayor’s Office and is purposely meant to be a night of fun and entertainment in line with this year’s Fiesta theme “Celebracion en grande…Adelante Zamboanga!”.

It is a competition among clusters, the winners of which will be announced on Oct. 8, the last day of the presentation. First prize winner will go home with P30,000; second prize winner will get P25,000 while the third prize winner will receive P20,000. Non-winners will receive a consolation prize of P7,000.

Nightly, different barangays are in charge of the presentation. The first night featured the barangays under cluster 5 that includes Licomo, Tictapul, Limaong, Vitali, Mangusu, Tigbalabag, Tagasilay, Sibulao, Muti, Buenavista, Calabasa, Latuan, Taguiti and Tumitus while the second night was the turn of the barangays under cluster 7 that composes of Cacao, Lansones, Mercedes, Taluksangay, Talabaan, Guisao, Bolong, Sangali, Cabaluay, Manicahan, Pasobolong, Salaan, Manalipa, Tictabon, Pangapuyan, Tumalutab and Lapakan.

The schedule for the other clusters is as follows: Cluster 2 (Calarian, San Roque, San Jose Gusu, San Jose Cawa-cawa, Campo Islam, Baliwasan, Canelar, Sto. Nino and Camino Nuevo) for Oct. 3; Cluster 8 (Putik, Lunzuran, Guiwan, Tetuan, Tugbungan, Talon-talon, Mampang, Arena Blanco, Sta. Catalina, Divisoria, Lumbangan, Lumayang, Boalan, Culianan, Zambowood and Kasanyangan) for Oct. 4; Cluster 2 (Ayala, Cawit, Maasin, Malagutay, Cabatangan, Sinunuc, Recodo, Talisayan and Capisan) for Oct. 5; Cluster 1 (Limpapa, Labuan, Patalon, Sinubong, Dulian-Pasonanca, La paz, Tulungatung, Pamucutan and Baluno) for Oct. 6; Cluster 6 (Curuan, Quiniput, Dita, Lubigan, Panubigan, Bungiao, Dulian-Upper Bungiao, Landang Laum, Landang Gua, Lamisahan, Victoria, Pasilmanta, Tolosa and Busay) for Oct. 7; and Cluster 4 (Pasonanca, Tumaga, Sta. Maria, Zones I, II, III and IV, Mariki, Rio Hondo and Sta. Barbara) for Oct. 8.

The Wow Zamboanga is one of the highlights of this year’s Zamboanga Hermosa Festival which reeled off October 1st. The festival is in celebration of the feast day of the Lady of the Pillar which falls on October 12.

The city government of Zamboanga under the administration of Mayor Celso Lobregat has been vigorously pursuing its campaign to promote Zamboanga as a premier tourist and investment hub as well as to correct the misimpression that the city and the rest of Mindanao are war torn areas.

The Zamboanga Hermosa Festival, the city’s grand festival every year, seeks to lure domestic and foreign tourists and investors as well. (Sheila Covarrubias)

MASwings to launch international services

Heads to Zamboanga and Davao

December 14, 2009

http://www.maswings.com.my/assets/images/MD%20MASwings.jpg

Kota Kinabalu - Malaysia Airlines wholly-owned subsidiary MASwings, plans to launch international services next year to neighboring countries Bandar Seri Begawan in Brunei, Makassar via Balikpapan in Indonesia and Davao via Zamboanga in the Philippines.

The airline plans to fly from Kota Kinabalu to Davao via Zamboanga in the Philippines and Makassar via Balikpapan in Indonesia by the middle of next year, MASwings Managing Director Mohd Salleh Ahmad Tabrani said.

MASwings intend to launch three times a week schedule to the Philippines and four times a week for Indonesia sometime in April next year using ATR 72-500 aircraft. A short hop to Bendar Seri Begawan will also be made during the day.

"This is in line with the government-backed BIMP-EAGA, Brunei-Indonesia-Malaysia Philippines East Asean Growth Area initiative", says Tabrani. "There is unlikely to be any government subsidies for launching the new services and that the airline will have to ensure these services are economically viable. That is why we are considering a stop in Zamboanga and Balikpapan to increase our chances of success"Tabrani adds.

The airline expects to receive its 10th ATR 72-500 aircraft in April 2010 as part of its re-fleeting program which was started in 2007. It received its first ATR in 2008 and six others followed in 2009.
“Our eight, ninth and 10th ATR 72-500 aircraft will arrive in February, March and April respectively,” Tabrani said after signing an agreement converting its options to firmed orders with ATR sales general manager for South-East Asia and Pacific Christophe Potocki.

Presently MASwings has no further options for more ATR aircraft "but it is something we will look at in the future" particularly "if our expansion into the BIMP-EAGA is working for us".

MASwings started its operations on Oct 1, 2007 and offers more than 950 weekly flights serving 22 destinations in Sarawak and Sabah as well as Labuan. It currently has a fleet of three Fokker 50s, four Twin Otters and seven ATR72s. The ATR 72-500 aircraft has a sitting capacity of 68 people
