“One Mindanao, One Visayas Movement”By MIKE U. CRISMUNDOFebruary 20, 2011, 3:22pm
BUTUAN CITY, Philippines
Senator Miguel “Migs” Zubiri is set to file a bill proposing for the creation of “One Mindanao, One Visayas Movement” in an effort to connect different cities and provinces for economic gains.
“This is an advocacy to connect the major island provinces of the Visayas via a bridge system,” said Sen. Zubiri in an interview with newsmen at inland resort and hotel here.
In this bill, the Mindanao legislator said that he is filing an appropriation measure to fund an estimated P25 billion worth of bridges that connect the provinces and cities in a “One Visayas” in five years program.
The appropriation will fund the construction of bridge connecting Cebu to Bohol passing Olanggo island, Santander (Cebu) to Dumaguete (Negros island) and Bacolod-Iloilo (Panay island) passing via Guimaras, Sen. Zubiri said.
In “One Mindanao” program, the Mindanao legislator is also set to file measure under his bill to fund an estimated P100 billion railway system in Mindanao, the second largest island in the country.
He said the east-west railway will connect Zamboanga City to Dapitan and Cagayan de Oro and to the cities of Butuan and Surigao. The north-south railway will connect General Santos, North Cotabato, Davao City, Bukidnon up to Cagayan de Oro.
“I am giving this idea to President Benigno S. Aquino III to make this as his flagship program to make these two big islands economically developed once my bill will be filed next month,” Sen. Zubiri said.
He said that he is bringing now the voice of Mindanao and Visayas to make these two big islands more globally competitive in the years to come. “This bill will spur the economy in the island provinces of Visayas and Mindanao,” he said.
“There is no reason that Mindanao and the Visayas will not be more progressive and economically stable if there is one efficient railway system connecting the major cities of Mindanao and one major bridge system connecting the major provinces in the Visayas,” stressed Sen. Zubiri.
“Best infrastructure development is what we need now and this is also my top priority program to uplift the economic conditions in the countryside, and the national government should start now,” he said.
He added that this will increase the activity in the Visayas and Mindanao in terms of eco-tourism, agriculture, economic gains for the different cities and provinces that are connected together.
He further added that railway system is a big help to farm and any products in terms of speed delivery in different cities and provinces in the island of Mindanao.
Along with provincial officials led by Gov. Erlpe John Amante, Sen. Zubiri was in Agusan del Norte since Thursday to implement his “One Town, One Project ni Migs Zubiri” in the 11 municipalities of the province that will construct school, health and day care centers in the amount of P1 million of each town

ZAMBOANGA CITY—For the first time, this city will be the initial venue in Mindanao of the film festival dubbed “Sineng Pambansa” giving Zamboangueños the opportunity to come up close and personal with selected and finest Philippine movies.
This, as Mayor Celso Lobregat and Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP) chairman Briccio Santos forged a memorandum of agreement (MOA) recently for the conduct of Sineng Pambansa: Zamboanga Film Festival 2011 this month in time for the celebration of Dia de Zamboanga, which marks this city’s inauguration as a chartered city.
The film festival, which will feature nine Philippine movies, will be held on Feb. 23-25. One of the films to be featured is a 1936 film entitled Zamboanga.
Zamboanga City is celebrating its 74th Charter Day on Feb. 26 dubbed as Dia de Zamboanga.
Though Zamboanga City has been declared as a chartered city on Oct. 12, 1936, “We celebrate our foundation day on Feb. 26, because it was at that time (February 26, 1937) when our first mayor Nicasio Valderosa was installed into office…This [film Zamboanga] was actually discovered being kept in the US Congress library,” Santos said.
Santos said they are working for the repatriation of the film for storage “in our national archive.” Managing the archive facility was recently delegated to the FDCP.
Santos said they have chosen Zamboanga City as the venue “of our initial leg” in Mindanao since this city is the cradle of history and culture in Mindanao.
“It [Zamboanga City] is a hub for many different people, Muslims and Christians alike,” Santos said.
The venue of the film festival “with six screenings a day” will be at the two theaters at Mindpro shopping Mall, according to Lobregat.
Tickets will be given for free to the different schools as well as the other sectors of the society and concerned stakeholders, he said.
Sineng Pambansa is a program thrust of the FDCP with the goal of revitalizing the Philippine film industry.
The program involves screening Filipino films for two or three days in different cities and population centers in the country.
The signing of the MOA between Santos and Lobregat was witnessed by FDCP executive director Jose Miguel de la Rosa, Vice-Mayor Cesar Itturalde and other stakeholders.

THE government recorded improved economic activities outside of Metro Manila in 2010, with the amount of investments registered in the provinces reaching P69.837 billion or 48 percent higher than the target set by the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI).
Trade Secretary Merly Cruz said close to P50 billion of the amount are investments in totally new projects.
Also in 2010, about 211,342 business establishments were registered with the DTI regional and provincial offices, ranging from microenterprises to large businesses with billions of pesos in investments.
“Usually only about 30 percent to 35 percent of business-name registrations are renewals and the rest are totally new businesses,” Cruz told the BusinessMirror.
Region 4A or the Southern Tagalog area recorded the highest number of business-name registrations in 2010 with 52,933, followed by Region 3 or Central Luzon with 38,018; Region 1 of the Ilocos provinces with 17,691; Region 7 or Central Visayas, 14,321; Region 6 or Western Visayas, 12,562; Region 11 or Davao, 10,941; Region 5 or Bicol 10,189; Region 10 or Northern Mindanao, 8,205; Region 4B or Mimaropa, 8,211; Region 12 or Soccsksargen, 8,100; Region 2 or Cagayan Valley, 8,011; the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR), 6,992; Region 5 or Bicol, 5,449; Region 9 or the Zamboanga Peninsula, 5,051, and Region 13 or Caraga, 4,618.
There were 69,695 business-name registrations in Metro Manila last year.
In terms of investments, Central Luzon recorded the highest with P12.708 billion, followed by the Davao Region with P9.95 billion, Cagayan Valley, P9.09 billion; Calabarzon, P7.75 billion; Northern Mindanao, P6.97 billion; the Ilocos Region, P4.35 billion; the Zamboanga Peninsula, P3.67 billion; Central Visayas, P3.51 billion; Mimaropa, P3.49 billion; , P2.48 billion; Soccsksargen, P2.15 billion; CAR, P1.99 billion; Western Visayas, P950 million; Bicol, P553 million and Eastern Visayas, P212 million.
The business registered last year generated 518,656 jobs, with Region 3 getting the highest share with 130,725, followed by Region 4A with 90,047, Region 7, 73,745; Region 1, 40,661, and Region 9, 28,873.
The DTI is now looking at ways to further boost economic activities in the provinces, including setting up industrial enclaves that will cater to domestic-oriented manufacturing firms and services providers. Trade Secretary Gregory L. Domingo said the initial targets for these enclaves, which will be similar to the Philippine Economic Zone Authority accredited sites hosting export-oriented firms, are those areas with existing ports and airports.69B, 48% over DTI target

"ZukiChirO" February 20th, 2011, 04:09 PM Ateneo de Zamboanga is 7th SWEEP Awards finalist
For the second straight year, a team from Ateneo de Zamboanga University (AdZU) has made it to the finals of the SWEEP Innovation and Excellence Awards, Smart Communications, Inc.’s (Smart) annual search for the most innovative wireless solutions to address concerns of the community.
http://www.smartsweep.ph/NR/rdonlyres/52C8477B-A561-45B5-A91D-042E3B4FDC16/14975/adzu1a.jpg
The Ateneo de Zamboanga University team (from left) faculty mentor Louie Virgil Gallardo,
Christian Rome Jalon, Abdullah Hussin, Moh. Gaffar Jalali, Seth Ryan Delos Reyes and Imee Joy Lim.
“We were jumping with joy when we learned that our ALR System was short-listed,” says team leader Seth Ryan N. Delos Reyes, a fifth year BS-CoE student.
The ALR System stands for “Automated Load Retailer System”, a public device that automatically reloads cell phones anywhere and anytime. It is among the top ten wireless applications chosen from a total of 133 entered in the 7th SWEEP Awards.
AdZU’s entry aims to address the problem regarding the availability of load retailers.
“Imagine arriving at the airport or seaport at 3am. The person supposed to pick you up is nowhere to be found. You try calling him but you’re out of load. You look for a load retailer but the stores selling eload or card loads are still closed. So you end up waiting for the store to open, or wait for your sundo to call you,” cites Delos Reyes.
The team’s ALR System makes cell phone loading available to the public 24 hours a day. The system can be conveniently located anywhere and can be as common as a telephone booth or an ATM station. And since it is automated, there’s no need for an operator.
“Our system consists of an ALR System station that loads the client’s cell phone and accepts coins as payments; an ALR System server that controls and monitors the transactions of the ALR System station client modules; and a credit system module that allows consumers to acquire load through credit,” explains team spokesperson Christian Rome C. Jalon, fifth year BS-ECE.
In order for their system to be fully functional, the AdZU team consulted with Smart’s Marketing Group for information on selling electronic load which is the main purpose of the ALR System.
“We wanted to improve lives in our community by developing an application that provides a better way of implementing some of the basic things that we do, such as e-load retailing. Through the SWEEP Awards, Smart has given us an opportunity to do just that,” says Delos Reyes.
For the past seven years, Smart has been challenging its partner schools under the Smart Wireless Engineering Education Program (SWEEP) to use their knowledge and skills in coming up with wireless applications that address actual problems in their respective communities.
This year’s competition is themed ““Empowering Communities through Wireless Technologies”. The top three winning teams will be awarded cash prizes, with corresponding grants for their schools. First prize is P500,000; second prize, P300,000; and third prize, P150,000.
AdZU hopes to make it to the top three this time.
The team, which enjoys the support of their entire school led by AdZU President Fr. Antonio F. Moreno, S.J., is busy developing the prototype of their ALR System in time for the final judging and presentation slated in March, 2011.

marlowe_cano February 20th, 2011, 06:15 PM I was just wondering. Is it the Zamboanga golf course that one sees from the plane? During my flight to ZC and I was seated by the window, after a few minutes of seeing water, we passed by an area which was just green.
IT could be either a mini-lake inside Zamboanga Golf Course or the BOG Lake in Malagutay-San Roque territories.

Zamboanga City will be bustling with activities this week, as it gears up for a full blast celebration of the 74th Dia de Zamboanga on Saturday, February 26.
Considered a significant milestone in the city's political history, Dia de Zamboanga marks the day when the newly-appointed officials of the city headed by Mayor Nicasio Valderroza took their oath following the declaration of Zamboanga as a chartered city on October 12, 1937.
The highlighting activities commence tomorrow Tuesday, February 22 with the open cheer dance competition year 9 at 1 pm at the City Coliseum in Tetuan. Public and private colleges and universities have enlisted for the competition, organized by the city government through the City Tourism Division.
An added feature in this year's Dia de Zamboanga celebration will be the Sineng Pambansa: Zamboanga Film Festival 2011 at the MIndpro Cinema from February 23 (Wednesday) up to Feb. 25.
Organized jointly by the Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP) and the city government, the Zamboanga film festival will showcase the screening of 10 independent Filipino films in line with the FDCP thrust to revitalize the local film industry through its slogan "bringing back Filipino films to the Filipinos". It was first launched in Ilo-ilo city last month and is now revolving in the different cities in the country.
Red Carpet Night will be Wednesday at 7pm at the National Museum Courtyard while Recognition Night will be on Thursday, February 24 at 7pm at the La Vista del Mar.
The conduct of Sineng Pambansa in Zamboanga was formalized during the signing of memorandum of agreement between FDCP chair Briccio Santos and Mayor Celso Lobregat February 2 in City Hall.
February 23 will also be the search for the Señorita/Señorita de Salud, a popularity contest organized by the City Health Office at 2pm at the City Coliseum in Tetuan.
On the same day, residents and visitors will also witness a talk and a book launching dubbed "Peace Warriors: On Trail with Filipino Soldiers, organized by the office of Cong. Beng Climaco. It will be held at the Ateneo de Zamboanga University at 3pm.
On the eve of Dia de Zamboanga, February 25, the city government will honor local achievers or people who brought honor to Zamboanga and who have excelled in various fields. The Achievers' Night will be held at 7pm at the Garden Orchid Convention Center.
February 25 will also be the start of the 2-day dart tourney dubbed 14th Celso Lobregat Cup Open Dart Tournament. It will start at 8pm at the Ram's Beer Garden and Restaurant in Gov. Camins.
The Dia de Zamboanga celebration will kick off with the grand parade to be participated by government and non-government workers and different sectors from N.S. Valderroza Street to Don Joaquin Enriquez Memorial Sports Complex in Baliwasan at 1pm. The drum and lyre competition will be held at the grandstand after the parade.
At 3 pm the same day will be the commemorative program also at the Baliwasan grandstand with Navy Flag Officer-in command Rear Admiral Alexander Pama as guest of honor and speaker. Winners to the "Competicion de Selyo" will also be announced during the program.
The 1st Fishing competition organized by the Zamboanga Chabacano Angler's Club (ZCAC) will also be held on February 26, Saturday from 7am to 11am at the Country Club Golf Course and Beach Resort.
The Dia de Zamboanga celebration will continue until the 27th of this month with the conduct of the Zamboanga Freedom Run, an activity organized by Cong. Beng Climaco of District I. It will be held at 5am at the Baliwasan grandstand.
On the same day, Sunday, will be the 4th Dia de Zamboanga Regional Karatedo Tournament Championship at 1pm at the Baliwasan Grandstand. At 8pm the same day will be the Search for Zambonaga Pop Idol 2011 at 8pm at the Paseo del Mar.
All city government sponsored activities are organized by the City Tourism division under the office of the mayor.

Hmm. Mukhang magiging problema nga talaga ang parking this coming Fiesta. :)

Speaking of Rib Type Roof ("term of the week" na ba ito? I wonder kung ano gagawin nila sa hotel building, andun pa rin kasi hanggang ngayon kahit nademolish at naclear na ang mga nasa surroundings nito.

Malacañang has declared Saturday, February 26, a special non-working day in Zamboanga to allow the residents to fittingly observe the 74th Dia de la Ciudad de Zamboanga.
By the authority of President Noynoy Aquino, Executive Secretary Paquito Ochoa Jr. last Friday issued Proclamation No. 111 formalizing the declaration.
"It is but fitting and proper that the people of the city of Zamboanga be given full opportunity to celebrate and participate in the occasion with appropriate ceremonies", Exec. Secretary Ochoa said in the proclamation, a copy of which was furnished to City Hall Friday afternoon.
The proclamation is based on a request made by Mayor Celso Lobregat through a formal letter to Malacanang a few weeks ago citing the significance of the observance of Dia de Zamboanga and the numerous activities lined up for the celebration.
In previous years, Dia de Zamboanga which marks the day when the first appointed officials of the city were sworn into office after the declaration of Zamboanga as a chartered city on October 12, 1936, was also declared a special non-working day based on requests from the mayor.
Meanwhile, Mayor Lobregat yesterday afternoon presided over a coordinating meeting with different offices involved in the preparation of the Dia de Zamboanga activities including the police, Task Force Zamboanga, volunteer groups, Department of Health, Red Cross and others to formalize plans for Saturday's big event.
"Everything is in place so we hope to have a very successful Dia de Zamboanga celebration", the mayor announced in an interview after the meeting at the City Hall conference room yesterday afternoon.
The open cheer dance competition- year 9, will be held today at 1 pm at the City Coliseum in Tetuan with five participants at the City Coliseum. The contestants are the CNHS Chronus (Culianan National High School), Pilar College All Stars (Pilar College), CET Hawks Pep Squad (Western Mindanao State University), Marvelous Dolphins (Education) and ZCMST Pep Squad (Zambo State College of Marine Sciences and Technology).
From Feb. 23-25 will be the first ever Zamboanga Film Festival 2011, a joint project of the Film Development Council of the Philippines and the city government ushering in the Dia de Zamboanga celebration.
Feb. 25 will be the Achievers' Night, an event where the city government will honor and pay tribute to people who excelled in their individual fields.
The grand parade will kick off the Dia de Zamboanga celebration which will have Navy Flag Officer in command Rear Admiral Alexander Pama as guest of honor and speaker.
Other activities during the day include the competicion de selyo, the drum and lyre competition and many others. The activities will run until Sunday, February 27.

The grade school will be moving naman din to Tumaga anytime soon. Tsaka those bells would regularly ring during Angelus hours lang naman (6am-12nn-6pm), mga oras na walang pasok ang grade school - maliban nalang siguro kung may kasal or other ceremonies na kailangang gamitin ang bells. Sa Ateneo HS (nung nasa La Purisima pa at kahit nung lumipat na sa Tumaga) eh may Angelus every 12 noon. All activities just come to a stop when the HS students, faculty, and staff hear the ringing of the "bell" (it's not really a bell) and then resume immediately after the Angelus ends. I guess the grade school may just adapt to it and do the same as what the high school is doing. :)
Btw, I think binalik lang ang mga bells na to kasi sa lumang cathedral eh meron talagang mga bells na gaya nito. I remember na everytime we pass by La Purisima in the late 90s or early 2000s during Angelus hours eh nagsta-stop talaga ang mga tao when they hear the bells ring. Tsaka when I was in grade school, I don't remember naman our classes getting disturbed by the ringing of the bells eh. :)

windlady February 22nd, 2011, 01:05 PM Palace declares Feb. 26 a holiday in Zamboanga

MALACAÑANG has declared Saturday, February 26, a special non-working day in Zamboanga City to allow the residents to fittingly observe the 74th Dia de la Ciudad de Zamboanga (Charter Day Anniversary).
Executive Secretary Paquito Ochoa Jr., by authority of President Benigno Simeon Aquino III, on Friday issued Proclamation No. 111 formalizing the declaration.
Greet your loved ones this Valentine season.
“It is but fitting and proper that the people of the city of Zamboanga be given full opportunity to celebrate and participate in the occasion with appropriate ceremonies,” Ochoa said in the proclamation, a copy of which was furnished to Zamboanga City Hall Friday afternoon.
The proclamation was based on a request of Mayor Celso Lobregat through a formal letter to Malacañang a few weeks ago citing the significance of the observance of Dia de Zamboanga and the numerous activities lined up for the celebration.
In previous years, Dia de Zamboanga, which marks the day when the first appointed officials of this city were sworn into office after the declaration of Zamboanga as a chartered city on October 12, 1936, was also declared a special non-working day based on requests from the mayor.
Lobregat presided Friday afternoon over a coordinating meeting with different offices involved in the preparation of the Dia de Zamboanga activities including the police, Task Force Zamboanga, volunteer groups, Department of Health, Red Cross and others to formalize plans for Saturday’s big event.
“Everything is in place so we hope to have a very successful Dia de Zamboanga celebration,” Lobregat said in the meeting. (Bong Garcia)

The 74th Dia de Zamboanga festivities went high gear yesterday with the inter-school cheer dance competition.
Now on its 9th year, the cheer dance competition, organized by the city government was participated by five schools—Culianan National High School (CNHS Chronus), Pilar College (Pilar College All Stars), Western Mindanao State University (CET Hawks Pep Squad), Marvelous Dolphins (Education) and the Zamboanga State College of Marine Sciences and Technology (ZCMST Pep Squad).
The City Coliseum in Tetuan was filled to the brim, as spectators and supporters of the competing schools trooped to the venue to witness the event. The contestants slugged it out for the huge cash prizes prepared by the city government through the Tourism Division that included P30,000 for the first prize, P20,000 for the second prize, P15,000 for the third prize.
Each participating school was allowed with not more than 35 team members, excluding the crew or props men whose number is between 5 and 10.
Under the guidelines, each cheer dance team was given a minimum of 5 minutes and a maximum of 7 minutes to perform. Participants were judged according to synchronization- 35%, Artistry/Choreography and Style- 35%, Costume- 10% and Acrobatic skills- 20%.
Mayor Celso Lobregat personally handed over the prizes to the winners during the competition.
The 74th Dia de Zamboanga marks the day when the first appointed officials headed by Mayor Nicasio Valderroza were sworn into office on February 26, 1937. The declaration of Zamboanga as a chartered city was done through a commonwealth act on Oct. 12, 1936.
Highlighting this year's Dia de Zamboanga celebration is the Sineng Pambansa: Zamboanga Film Festival 2011, the first of its kind in Zamboanga that will showcase 10 of the country's best films.
The film fest, slated from February 23-25 at the Mindpro Cinema is a joint project of the Film Development Council of the Philippines and the city government. Tonight, the city government will tender a welcome dinner dubbed Red Carpet Night for the film makers and others guests.
The Recognition Night for the film makers will be Thursday, February 24 at the La Vista del Mar in Upper Calarian.

Caving or speleology in scientific term, is the underground exploration of natural caverns. Caves are one of the most fascinating environments known to man where it is still possible to participate in original exploration. Cave systems have taken thousands of years to evolve their fantastic shapes, and crystal & clay formations. Stalagtites and stalagmites found across the rocky cave floor and roofs are just two types of calcite formations that may greet a visitor to this unique natural world. Virgin clay floors remain as pristine as the day ancient floodwaters last receded. A caving trip and caving tour takes you to a world that, whether you are the first to enter or not, will leave an unforgettable impression.
Unfortunately, very few people, apart from caving clubs, are able to experience this remarkable environment so take advantage of this opportunity whilst in the Zamboanga City. Caves are graded from 1 to 5 to give some idea of the level of difficulty; Grade 1 – Easy cave with no real difficulties or dangers.Grade 2 – Easy cave with minor difficulties, Grade 3 – 5 Moderate' Difficult and Severe
It's your chance to embark upon a fascinating and unique adventure which often includes the negotiation of pitches, squeezes, and water. Every cave system around the Zamboanga City has its own special characteristics often peculiar to the region in which they occur. The magical surroundings of an undiscovered world will turn apprehensive novices into intrepid explorers.
Very important thing to do while caving, "Remember that formations are to be looked at , not to be touched ." We hopefully, future generations will have something to look at if everyone will follow this rule.
Apparently, a small part of the public feels that in order to leave a legacy, they have to carve their names or their quotes on cave walls and some vandals break formations to take it home.

by Sheila Covarrubias
Thursday, February 24. 2011
Mayor Celso Lobregat yesterday declared his all out support to the local film industry, as he pledged to host the 2012 Film fest in February next year.
"I announce that we will be here again, same time next year, we will have the 2012 Zamboanga Film Festival and we will be partnering with the Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP)", Mayor Lobregat announced during a press briefing attended by FDCP chair Briccio Santos, Cultural Attache of the French Embassy Christian Merer and acclaimed film makers in City Hall yesterday morning.
The press briefing was done in line with the Sineng Pambansa: Zamboanga Film Festival 2011 which Zamboanga City hosts for the first time. The film fest reeled off yesterday, February 23 and will culminate Friday, February 25. It is held in conjunction with the 74th Dia de Zamboanga celebration.
Mayor Lobregat said the city government is honored and pleased to host Sineng Pambansa which will be another opportunity for the constituents to show what Zamboanga City really is---peaceful and vibrant, vis-a-vis the negative perceptions brought about by inaccurate dateline.
Zamboanga is the first venue for the Mindanao leg of the Sineng Pambansa, which is a program thrust of the FDCP to revitalize Filipino films.
"We hope that your stay here will show to the world that Zamboanga City is really peaceful and progressive", he said stressing that Zamboanga City like the rest of Mindanao is a victim of misperception. "Please help us in correcting that misperception and I hope this will also encourage more producers and film makers from this city to excel in their field".
He expressed pride that the award winning Halaw, one of the films being screened in the film fest, was shot in Zamboanga with Sheron Dayoc, a Zamboangueno as the director.
"I am sure you can see the many potentials of Zamboanga City as a location for many of our local films", he said, citing the city's rich and colorful history and culture.
FDCP Chair Briccio Santos thanked Mayor Lobregat and the city government for co-partnering with the FDCP in hosting the Sineng Pambansa saying "and I hope this engagement will be an annual event for Zamboanga City and perhaps next year and the year after, it will grow bigger and bigger and propel Zamboanga as a film hub".
Sineng Pambansa, he explained is one of the vehicles initiated by the present administration to arose people's consciousness on locally produced films acclaimed abroad. "There is a proliferation of indie films and so we intend to bring Filipino films back to the Filipinos to build an audience for our Filipino independent films and just as they are feted and loved abroad, it would be better if they are also loved and feted in their own country".
The FDCP has lined up 8 film fests this year with the first held in Ilo-ilo City last month, this month in Zamboanga and the others to be held one after the other in Baguio, Pampanga, Marawi, Cotabato, Naga and Quezon City.
The Sineng Pambansa:Zamboanga Film festival 2011 is a joint undertaking of the FDCP and city government of Zamboanga and will see the screening of at least 10 of the country's best independent films that include the 1937 film Zamboanga, Halaw, Limbunan, Concerto, Emir, Ang Mundo sa Panahon ng Bato, Kano, Sabungero and Di natatapos ang gabi among others.
Screening is held in cinemas 1 and 3 at Mindpro Citimall with free admission.
Last night, the city government feted the film makers to a welcome dinner dubbed "A Red Carpet Night" at the historic National Museum courtyard.
Tonight, the film makers will be honored in the "Recognition Night" to be held at the La vista del Mar in Upper Calarian.
Aside from film showing, the FDCP and the film makers are also conducting lectures and workshops on film making at the Ateneo de Zamboanga University.
Among the film makers currently in Zamboanga to promote their films are JC Bernardo producer of Sabungero, Production Manager Danny Tiongson and lead actor Edwin Pamanian of Ang Mundo sa Panahon ng Bato, Lead Actor John Arcilla of Halaw, Director Ato Bautista and Production Designer John Paul Hornedo of Di Natatapos and Gabi and Director Teng Mangansakan and Actress Jea Lyka Cinco of Limbunan.

The whole stretch of their property facing Nuñez Extension has already been fenced up.
They're currently constructing the makeshift guard house beside their massive gate.

I surfed the net and found out that this is a Dipolog-based rural bank. They don't have signages yet but I'm sure they'll put them up soon. Banks are sprouting everywhere. That's true, people of Zamboanga have large deposits, mas marami pang banks dito kesa sa Cagayan de Oro and Gensan..........kulang lang investments, our LGU has 2 billion pesos deposits in banks here....dapat ininvest sana yan for roads and infrastructures, how about flyovers, wider roads and government owned malls (like tutuban mall in manila)

CDO has more banks than Zamboanga. Actually mas marami businesses sa CDO kaya lang most of these are just branches of Manila or Cebu based companies. These companies pay their taxes in Manila or Cebu. Unlike in CDO, big companies in Zamboanga are locally owned kaya they pay their taxes here. Mas malaki tuloy ang share natin sa IRA. We should remember that more than 50% ng income ng Zamboanga galing sa IRA.

If you noticed dun sa website ng Bank of Makati, they're looking for Account Officers and Junior Account Officers only. These are loans people. Perhaps gusto lang muna nila malaman kung marami mag loan dito. Baka mag rent lang sila ng isang maliit na space for this. But who knows? Baka eventually maglagay na rin sila ng full service branch dito as part of their planned expansion. Outside Luzon, they only have 1 branch each in Cebu, Iloilo and Davao. Hopefully, makita rin nila ang potential ng Zamboanga sa deposits.

Putting up govt owned businesses is not a good idea. This will only discourage businessmen from investing. The govt should never compete with the private sector. What the local govt should do instead is encourage these investors to put up businesses here by offering them tax perks and incentives like what Gensan is doing now. Look at the results. Many outside investors are now setting up businesses in Gensan. Robinson's was given tax perks and this resulted to Robinson's establishing their first Mindanao Robinson's Place Mall in Gensan. Very soon, Gensan might eventually overtake Zamboanga. Politicians in Zamboanga should get their acts together and make our city an atttactive investment destination in Mindanao.

I used to be a banker. I left the banking profession 2 years ago. The banks in CDO are spread throughout kaya siguro hindi mo gaano napapansin na marami silang banks. Most of the banks here in Zamboanga are in close proximity of each other kaya tingin natin marami talaga. Unlike here in Zamboanga, the commercial centers in CDO are scattered kaya ang mga banks dun kalat din. It is only recently that we see Zamboanga's commercial centers spreading outside of our downtown center. The 3 biggest banks- BDO, Metrobank, and BPI have more branches in CDO than here. In fact mas marami bangko sa CDO na wala pa dito (plantersbank, wealthbank, asiatrust etc.). In Mindanao, Davao has the most number of banks, followed by CDO, Zamboanga and Gensan.

If you are a consumer/employee, this is really good. But if you are a businessman, it's not. If you put up a mall beside or near Tutuban Mall or Divisoria Mall or even C3 Mall, how can you compete with a govt owned mall in terms of leasing your space or selling your products? You put up this investment with your own hard earned money while the govt just used the people's money. Both you and the govt want an immediate return on your investments. The govt can flex its muscles to force businessmen to locate their stores in its mall or else this will just become a white elephant and the taxpayers will not like that. Can you do the same? Nope, definitely. The only thing you can do is lower your rental fees and prices and pray that there are still businessmen who may want to deal with you but this will mean less income and longer wait for you to recover your investments, if ever you still can. Won't you feel discouraged?

Im a travel business person Sir......sorry to say this Sir but your point of view is within Zamboanga City only, my point of view is based from experience and learnings from other places on how their businesses work with government.....why did Pagadian succeed with their C3 mall?....why did Manila succeed with their Tutuban mall?......when these malls were built, more establishments sprout beside it look at them now if ever you've travelled to these places lately......well i respect your point of view Sir if its within the boundaries of Zamboanga City only.... thats difficult with Chinese businessmen here and politicians, they isolate too much that it hinders the growth potentials of the City:) We as Zamboanguenos should widen our perspective be open enough to boost development here and not just for our own profit, were there complaints from neighboring businesses in C3 Mall or Tutuban Mall? None, in fact jam packed pa el mga stores areredor de estos mga Government Malls

hehe...i have a business in CDO. In terms of land area, mas malaki ang Zamboanga but if we speak of commercial area, mas malaki ang sa CDO. As I said, I used to work in a bank here in Zamboanga kaya alam ko kung saan mas maraming bangko dito sa Mindanao hehe... Zamboanga and CDO are the same. We are both highway and port cities. The only difference is that CDO is expanding its commercial areas along the highway going east, west and south while Zamboanga's commercial area is still very much concentrated within the 7-10 km radius from the port. Even Robinson's opted to put up their mall within the city proper instead of along the highway in the east coast.

That's true. We can never compare Zamboanga with Manila. We may be bigger than Metro Manila in terms of land area but economically, we lag very far behind. Divisoria and Tutuban malls may have worked in Manila because of its huge population but we still cannot say the same for C3 Mall in Pagadian. We still do not know the effects that C3 Mall may bring on other privately owned malls in Pagadian. Hopefully, both C3 Mall and the other malls in Pagadian will prosper as this will mean more jobs for the people. Btw, is there an SM City or Robinson's Place now within the Tutuban & Divisoria areas? The last time I went there the only privately owned mall (is it a mall?) in the area was 168.

...that's true but we can expect more banks to open here within the next five years as more investors are putting up businesses here. More business means more money and more money means more banks. Dagdag ko pa - more business also means more jobs and more jobs mean more spending power for the people.

Actually, hindi naman talaga kailangan pumunta pa sa ibang lugar ang mga cancer patients dito for treatment. Chemotherapy is offered by big hospitals here. What sets the Cancer Center aside is that it is the first facility to specialize in the treatment (and probably also the etiology and preventive measures) of cancer in the city.

Impossible. Come on, people. We're now in the 21st Century. That story is sooo Middle Ages-ish. Besides, on average, human infants only begin to say a word or two when they reach 10 months. With that given, how can you expect them to construct sentences at that very young age?

Nothing's going on inside the compound yet. May barikada lang yung entrance and there are also guards on duty 24/7 sa area. Baka hindi na muna nila i demolish ang wall. Yun na lang siguro ang gawin nilang pantakip sa area during construction instead na maglagay pa sila ng colored sheets tulad nung nasa nunez ext side. Celso urges Zambo folk to pay right taxes to gov't (http://www.zambotimes.com/archives/28307-Celso-urges-Zambo-folk-to-pay-right-taxes-to-govt.html)
by Vic Larato
Mayor Celso Lobregat yesterday rallied behind the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) in its tax campaign as he called on all Zamboangue?os, the Filipinos in general, to pay the right taxes to the government as these will be siphoned for government projects and services.
"Taxation serves many purposes, the first of which is revenue. Taxes paid raise money to spend on government projects and programs which are aimed to help our people," Mayor Lobregat told a jam-packed convention where BIR regional office launched its tax campaign for 2011.
To illustrate the importance of tax revenues, the city chief executive said that during his first term in office in 2004 there were many projects the city wanted to implement but there was little fund in the city coffers.
"So we devised a strategy to improve our local revenue and worked hard to achieve sound fiscal management. And it worked. Today, Zamboanga City is one of the most stable local government units in the country. The city's revenues continue to climb steadily from P1.788 billion in 2009 to P1.980 billion in 2010, of which 23% came from local revenue sources," Lobregat stressed, adding that the city's projected budget for 2011 is P2.110 billion.
He said there are two sources of revenues: local taxes and the Internal Revenue Allotment (IRA) from the national government, which was taken from the tax collections of the BIR. He explained that the IRA is divided at 60% for the national government and 40% for the local government units?cities, provinces and municipalities.
Of the 40% for LGUs, 23% goes to all cities, 23% goes to all provinces and 34% to all municipalities and 20% to all barangays.
On the other hand, the 23% for all cities will again be divided among all cities in the country at 50% population, 25% land area and 25% equal sharing.
"That is why, it is very important that the people pay the right taxes to the government, because how much taxes are collected by the BIR indicates how much the local government units get from IRA. The more taxes paid to the government, the bigger the IRA share of the LGUs," the mayor pointed out.
Besides, he added, paying the right taxes is an obligation of all Filipinos.
Also present during the tax campaign kick-off program were Congressman Erbie Fabian, all Revenue District Officers (RDOs) from the different provinces and cities in the Zamboanga Peninsula and BIR-9 officers and staff headed by Atty. Rozil Lozares.-

Mayor Celso Lobregat addresses the over a thousand participants to the 2nd Regional Pre-Service Teachers' Summit at the UZ Summit Center in Tetuan, Monday morning. JOEY BAUTISTA
ZAMBOANGA CITY — City Mayor Celso Lobregat believes that the enhanced K+12 Basic Education Program will pave the way for an improved quality education in the country, this he expressed during the 2nd Regional Pre ?Service Teachers Summit held Feb. 21 at the Universidad de Zamboanga Summit Center.
Lobregat said that the proposal of the national government to add two more years in the basic education system is a wise move.
He said some people might think that K+12 is an unpopular decision but it is definitely the right thing to do. "It's always nice to do things that are popular and right at the same time, but at some point you have to choose between what is popular and doing what is right" the mayor said.
He stressed that in other countries worldwide, public education is up to 12 years and that it is only here in the Philippines that we follow the 10-year basic education course (6 years elementary, 4 years high school).
The Chief executive said that one reason for the decline in the quality of education is the number of years in basic education. This he said following the result of the Licensure Examination for Teachers (LET) which showed low percentage of board passers.
"Last year, only 19% passed for the elementary and 23% for the secondary in the national level and what is mor? disappointing and tragic is the LET results in the regional level" Lobregat said as he expressed his full nod and support to k+12 education system.
The enhanced K+ 12 Education program seeks to provide for a quality 12 year basic education for all Filipinos. K +12 means Kindergarten and the 12 years elementary and secondary education. Kindergarten refers to the 5-year old cohort that takes a standardized curriculum. Elementary educations refers to primary schooling that involves six or seven years of education meanwhile secondary education refers to high school. Under the K+12, the intention is not just to add two years of schooling but more importantly to enhance the basic education. (JP Alvarez-PIA)
