ZAMBOANGA CITY — All is set for the grand celebration of the 74th Dia De La Ciudad De Zamboanga on Saturday, February 26.

One of the biggest spectacles the city celebrates every year, the other one being the Fiesta Pilar, Dia de Zamboanga is the commemoration of the city's proclamation as a chartered city.

To make this year's celebration different from the past celebrations, the city government will conduct the first-ever film festival called Sineng Pambansa: Zamboanga Film Festival 2011.

Sineng Pambansa will give Zamboanguenos the opportunity to watch internationally and locally acclaimed movies, from classic, mainstream, and independent (Indie) films. The movie festival will kick-off tomorrow, Feb. 23 and will run until the 25th at the Mindpro cinema.

The film fest will showcase 10 movies which include Teng Mangansakan's 2009 film "Limbunan", Paul Alexander Morales' 2008 film "Concerto: A Davao War Story", Sheron Dayoc's "Halaw", "Kano" of Monster Jimenez, "Ang Mundo sa Panahon ng Bato" of Mes De Guzman, Rozie Delgado and Miguel Kaimo's "Sabungero", "Di Natatapos ang Gabi" of Ato Bautista, Sean Lim's "Pendong" and the 1937 classic of Eduardo de Castro, "Zamboanga".

Along with this film showing is a series of lecture-workshop by some of the best Filipino filmmakers.

The film festival was included in the featured activity of this year's celebration to revitalize local film industry.

Screening will start at 9 am until 6 pm from Feb. 23-25.

Also part of the highlights of the celebration is the grand parade and the Competicion del Selyo de Zamboanga, a grand competition on the city government seal-making using fresh, colorful flowers.

In line with the celebration, the city police office will be deploying 300 cops on all sections and thoroughfares of the city to ensure the safety of the public and the tourists who come here every year to witness the celebration. (PIA9-ZC/MV Cajulao)

All of this Films will be shown in Cinema 1 and 3...:)

Wow, sana next year pa, kung may festival na katulad nito, dapat may mga sinehan din sa mga malls sa Zamboanga... lalo na pag may Robinsons Mall. I'm sure maganda yung outcome. Sa Yubenco kasi, supposed yung lugar kung saan yung Muebles, dapat sinehan din yun, di natuloy eh.

Exhilarating experience of re-discovering the Victoria Pader Cave, passing Bgry. Manicahan, Zamboanga City (http://www.facebook.com/notes/zambotimescom/exhilarating-experience-of-re-discovering-the-victoria-pader-cave-passing-bgry-m/196014057094366)

Caving or speleology in scientific term, is the underground exploration of natural caverns. Caves are one of the most fascinating environments known to man where it is still possible to participate in original exploration. Cave systems have taken thousands of years to evolve their fantastic shapes, and crystal & clay formations. Stalagtites and stalagmites found across the rocky cave floor and roofs are just two types of calcite formations that may greet a visitor to this unique natural world. Virgin clay floors remain as pristine as the day ancient floodwaters last receded. A caving trip and caving tour takes you to a world that, whether you are the first to enter or not, will leave an unforgettable impression.

Unfortunately, very few people, apart from caving clubs, are able to experience this remarkable environment so take advantage of this opportunity whilst in the Zamboanga City. Caves are graded from 1 to 5 to give some idea of the level of difficulty; Grade 1 – Easy cave with no real difficulties or dangers.Grade 2 – Easy cave with minor difficulties, Grade 3 – 5 Moderate' Difficult and Severe

It's your chance to embark upon a fascinating and unique adventure which often includes the negotiation of pitches, squeezes, and water. Every cave system around the Zamboanga City has its own special characteristics often peculiar to the region in which they occur. The magical surroundings of an undiscovered world will turn apprehensive novices into intrepid explorers.

Very important thing to do while caving, "Remember that formations are to be looked at , not to be touched ." We hopefully, future generations will have something to look at if everyone will follow this rule.

Apparently, a small part of the public feels that in order to leave a legacy, they have to carve their names or their quotes on cave walls and some vandals break formations to take it home.

For caving activity adventure, contact ZATERS 09193928436
You don't have to be cave men to enjoy this activity.

As a show of full support to Filipino films: Celso pledges hosting of 2012 Film fest (http://www.zambotimes.com/archives/28306-As-a-show-of-full-support-to-Filipino-films-Celso-pledges-hosting-of-2012-Film-fest.html)
by Sheila Covarrubias
Thursday, February 24. 2011

Mayor Celso Lobregat yesterday declared his all out support to the local film industry, as he pledged to host the 2012 Film fest in February next year.

"I announce that we will be here again, same time next year, we will have the 2012 Zamboanga Film Festival and we will be partnering with the Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP)", Mayor Lobregat announced during a press briefing attended by FDCP chair Briccio Santos, Cultural Attache of the French Embassy Christian Merer and acclaimed film makers in City Hall yesterday morning.

The press briefing was done in line with the Sineng Pambansa: Zamboanga Film Festival 2011 which Zamboanga City hosts for the first time. The film fest reeled off yesterday, February 23 and will culminate Friday, February 25. It is held in conjunction with the 74th Dia de Zamboanga celebration.

Mayor Lobregat said the city government is honored and pleased to host Sineng Pambansa which will be another opportunity for the constituents to show what Zamboanga City really is---peaceful and vibrant, vis-a-vis the negative perceptions brought about by inaccurate dateline.

Zamboanga is the first venue for the Mindanao leg of the Sineng Pambansa, which is a program thrust of the FDCP to revitalize Filipino films.

"We hope that your stay here will show to the world that Zamboanga City is really peaceful and progressive", he said stressing that Zamboanga City like the rest of Mindanao is a victim of misperception. "Please help us in correcting that misperception and I hope this will also encourage more producers and film makers from this city to excel in their field".

He expressed pride that the award winning Halaw, one of the films being screened in the film fest, was shot in Zamboanga with Sheron Dayoc, a Zamboangueno as the director.

"I am sure you can see the many potentials of Zamboanga City as a location for many of our local films", he said, citing the city's rich and colorful history and culture.

FDCP Chair Briccio Santos thanked Mayor Lobregat and the city government for co-partnering with the FDCP in hosting the Sineng Pambansa saying "and I hope this engagement will be an annual event for Zamboanga City and perhaps next year and the year after, it will grow bigger and bigger and propel Zamboanga as a film hub".

Sineng Pambansa, he explained is one of the vehicles initiated by the present administration to arose people's consciousness on locally produced films acclaimed abroad. "There is a proliferation of indie films and so we intend to bring Filipino films back to the Filipinos to build an audience for our Filipino independent films and just as they are feted and loved abroad, it would be better if they are also loved and feted in their own country".

The FDCP has lined up 8 film fests this year with the first held in Ilo-ilo City last month, this month in Zamboanga and the others to be held one after the other in Baguio, Pampanga, Marawi, Cotabato, Naga and Quezon City.

The Sineng Pambansa:Zamboanga Film festival 2011 is a joint undertaking of the FDCP and city government of Zamboanga and will see the screening of at least 10 of the country's best independent films that include the 1937 film Zamboanga, Halaw, Limbunan, Concerto, Emir, Ang Mundo sa Panahon ng Bato, Kano, Sabungero and Di natatapos ang gabi among others.

Screening is held in cinemas 1 and 3 at Mindpro Citimall with free admission.

Last night, the city government feted the film makers to a welcome dinner dubbed "A Red Carpet Night" at the historic National Museum courtyard.

Tonight, the film makers will be honored in the "Recognition Night" to be held at the La vista del Mar in Upper Calarian.

Aside from film showing, the FDCP and the film makers are also conducting lectures and workshops on film making at the Ateneo de Zamboanga University.

Among the film makers currently in Zamboanga to promote their films are JC Bernardo producer of Sabungero, Production Manager Danny Tiongson and lead actor Edwin Pamanian of Ang Mundo sa Panahon ng Bato, Lead Actor John Arcilla of Halaw, Director Ato Bautista and Production Designer John Paul Hornedo of Di Natatapos and Gabi and Director Teng Mangansakan and Actress Jea Lyka Cinco of Limbunan.

The whole stretch of their property facing Nuñez Extension has already been fenced up.
They're currently constructing the makeshift guard house beside their massive gate.

Did you know that Katipunan Bank recently opened an extension office here? I used to be a banker but I never heard of this bank 'til I saw the streamer announcing its opening in Baliwasan (where Chicken Ati-Atihan used to be in front of Natasha). I surfed the net and found out that this is a Dipolog-based rural bank. They don't have signages yet but I'm sure they'll put them up soon. Banks are sprouting everywhere. That's true, people of Zamboanga have large deposits, mas marami pang banks dito kesa sa Cagayan de Oro and Gensan..........kulang lang investments, our LGU has 2 billion pesos deposits in banks here....dapat ininvest sana yan for roads and infrastructures, how about flyovers, wider roads and government owned malls (like tutuban mall in manila):cheers:

CDO has more banks than Zamboanga. Actually mas marami businesses sa CDO kaya lang most of these are just branches of Manila or Cebu based companies. These companies pay their taxes in Manila or Cebu. Unlike in CDO, big companies in Zamboanga are locally owned kaya they pay their taxes here. Mas malaki tuloy ang share natin sa IRA. We should remember that more than 50% ng income ng Zamboanga galing sa IRA.

If you noticed dun sa website ng Bank of Makati, they're looking for Account Officers and Junior Account Officers only. These are loans people. Perhaps gusto lang muna nila malaman kung marami mag loan dito. Baka mag rent lang sila ng isang maliit na space for this. But who knows? Baka eventually maglagay na rin sila ng full service branch dito as part of their planned expansion. Outside Luzon, they only have 1 branch each in Cebu, Iloilo and Davao. Hopefully, makita rin nila ang potential ng Zamboanga sa deposits.

Putting up govt owned businesses is not a good idea. This will only discourage businessmen from investing. The govt should never compete with the private sector. What the local govt should do instead is encourage these investors to put up businesses here by offering them tax perks and incentives like what Gensan is doing now. Look at the results. Many outside investors are now setting up businesses in Gensan. Robinson's was given tax perks and this resulted to Robinson's establishing their first Mindanao Robinson's Place Mall in Gensan. Very soon, Gensan might eventually overtake Zamboanga. Politicians in Zamboanga should get their acts together and make our city an atttactive investment destination in Mindanao.

I used to be a banker. I left the banking profession 2 years ago. The banks in CDO are spread throughout kaya siguro hindi mo gaano napapansin na marami silang banks. Most of the banks here in Zamboanga are in close proximity of each other kaya tingin natin marami talaga. Unlike here in Zamboanga, the commercial centers in CDO are scattered kaya ang mga banks dun kalat din. It is only recently that we see Zamboanga's commercial centers spreading outside of our downtown center. The 3 biggest banks- BDO, Metrobank, and BPI have more branches in CDO than here. In fact mas marami bangko sa CDO na wala pa dito (plantersbank, wealthbank, asiatrust etc.). In Mindanao, Davao has the most number of banks, followed by CDO, Zamboanga and Gensan.

If you are a consumer/employee, this is really good. But if you are a businessman, it's not. If you put up a mall beside or near Tutuban Mall or Divisoria Mall or even C3 Mall, how can you compete with a govt owned mall in terms of leasing your space or selling your products? You put up this investment with your own hard earned money while the govt just used the people's money. Both you and the govt want an immediate return on your investments. The govt can flex its muscles to force businessmen to locate their stores in its mall or else this will just become a white elephant and the taxpayers will not like that. Can you do the same? Nope, definitely. The only thing you can do is lower your rental fees and prices and pray that there are still businessmen who may want to deal with you but this will mean less income and longer wait for you to recover your investments, if ever you still can. Won't you feel discouraged?

Im a travel business person Sir......sorry to say this Sir but your point of view is within Zamboanga City only, my point of view is based from experience and learnings from other places on how their businesses work with government.....why did Pagadian succeed with their C3 mall?....why did Manila succeed with their Tutuban mall?......when these malls were built, more establishments sprout beside it look at them now if ever you've travelled to these places lately......well i respect your point of view Sir if its within the boundaries of Zamboanga City only.... thats difficult with Chinese businessmen here and politicians, they isolate too much that it hinders the growth potentials of the City:) We as Zamboanguenos should widen our perspective be open enough to boost development here and not just for our own profit, were there complaints from neighboring businesses in C3 Mall or Tutuban Mall? hehe...i have a business in CDO. In terms of land area, mas malaki ang Zamboanga but if we speak of commercial area, mas malaki ang sa CDO. As I said, I used to work in a bank here in Zamboanga kaya alam ko kung saan mas maraming bangko dito sa Mindanao hehe... Zamboanga and CDO are the same. We are both highway and port cities. The only difference is that CDO is expanding its commercial areas along the highway going east, west and south while Zamboanga's commercial area is still very much concentrated within the 7-10 km radius from the port. Even Robinson's opted to put up their mall within the city proper instead of along the highway in the east coast.

That's true. We can never compare Zamboanga with Manila. We may be bigger than Metro Manila in terms of land area but economically, we lag very far behind. Divisoria and Tutuban malls may have worked in Manila because of its huge population but we still cannot say the same for C3 Mall in Pagadian. We still do not know the effects that C3 Mall may bring on other privately owned malls in Pagadian. Hopefully, both C3 Mall and the other malls in Pagadian will prosper as this will mean more jobs for the people. Btw, is there an SM City or Robinson's Place now within the Tutuban & Divisoria areas? The last time I went there the only privately owned mall (is it a mall?) in the area was 168.

...that's true but we can expect more banks to open here within the next five years as more investors are putting up businesses here. More business means more money and more money means more banks. Dagdag ko pa - more business also means more jobs and more jobs mean more spending power for the people.

ok Sir, Ill respect your point of view since we are both businessmen now......highway cities are the likes of CDO, Butuan, or Davao, where roads have links from end to end.....sa case po ng Zamboanga City pagdating sa Limpapa road end na puro bundok na....and that's not a highway City :ohno:

huwow nice one!!!
atleast di na pupunta sa ibang lugar

Actually, hindi naman talaga kailangan pumunta pa sa ibang lugar ang mga cancer patients dito for treatment. Chemotherapy is offered by big hospitals here. What sets the Cancer Center aside is that it is the first facility to specialize in the treatment (and probably also the etiology and preventive measures) of cancer in the city.

Impossible. Come on, people. We're now in the 21st Century. That story is sooo Middle Ages-ish. Besides, on average, human infants only begin to say a word or two when they reach 10 months. With that given, how can you expect them to construct sentences at that very young age?

I think they would just allow it, but, of course, you wouldn't expect to leave the place without leaving a speck of suspicion towards you. :lol: Anyway, I've seen RLC's guards yesterday. They were in navy blue uniforms, similar to those worn by escorts of armored vans.

Nothing's going on inside the compound yet. May barikada lang yung entrance and there are also guards on duty 24/7 sa area.

Mucho gat cen aki na di atun ciudad!

Celso urges Zambo folk to pay right taxes to gov't (http://www.zambotimes.com/archives/28307-Celso-urges-Zambo-folk-to-pay-right-taxes-to-govt.html)
by Vic Larato

Mayor Celso Lobregat yesterday rallied behind the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) in its tax campaign as he called on all Zamboangue?os, the Filipinos in general, to pay the right taxes to the government as these will be siphoned for government projects and services.

"Taxation serves many purposes, the first of which is revenue. Taxes paid raise money to spend on government projects and programs which are aimed to help our people," Mayor Lobregat told a jam-packed convention where BIR regional office launched its tax campaign for 2011.

To illustrate the importance of tax revenues, the city chief executive said that during his first term in office in 2004 there were many projects the city wanted to implement but there was little fund in the city coffers.

"So we devised a strategy to improve our local revenue and worked hard to achieve sound fiscal management. And it worked. Today, Zamboanga City is one of the most stable local government units in the country. The city's revenues continue to climb steadily from P1.788 billion in 2009 to P1.980 billion in 2010, of which 23% came from local revenue sources," Lobregat stressed, adding that the city's projected budget for 2011 is P2.110 billion.

He said there are two sources of revenues: local taxes and the Internal Revenue Allotment (IRA) from the national government, which was taken from the tax collections of the BIR. He explained that the IRA is divided at 60% for the national government and 40% for the local government units?cities, provinces and municipalities.

Of the 40% for LGUs, 23% goes to all cities, 23% goes to all provinces and 34% to all municipalities and 20% to all barangays.

On the other hand, the 23% for all cities will again be divided among all cities in the country at 50% population, 25% land area and 25% equal sharing.

"That is why, it is very important that the people pay the right taxes to the government, because how much taxes are collected by the BIR indicates how much the local government units get from IRA. The more taxes paid to the government, the bigger the IRA share of the LGUs," the mayor pointed out.

Besides, he added, paying the right taxes is an obligation of all Filipinos.

Also present during the tax campaign kick-off program were Congressman Erbie Fabian, all Revenue District Officers (RDOs) from the different provinces and cities in the Zamboanga Peninsula and BIR-9 officers and staff headed by Atty. Rozil Lozares.-

Zambo Mayor believes K+12 educ program will lead to quality education (http://www.zambotimes.com/archives/28333-Zambo-Mayor-believes-K+12-educ-program-will-lead-to-quality-education.html)

Mayor Celso Lobregat addresses the over a thousand participants to the 2nd Regional Pre-Service Teachers' Summit at the UZ Summit Center in Tetuan, Monday morning. JOEY BAUTISTA

ZAMBOANGA CITY — City Mayor Celso Lobregat believes that the enhanced K+12 Basic Education Program will pave the way for an improved quality education in the country, this he expressed during the 2nd Regional Pre ?Service Teachers Summit held Feb. 21 at the Universidad de Zamboanga Summit Center.

Lobregat said that the proposal of the national government to add two more years in the basic education system is a wise move.

He said some people might think that K+12 is an unpopular decision but it is definitely the right thing to do. "It's always nice to do things that are popular and right at the same time, but at some point you have to choose between what is popular and doing what is right" the mayor said.

He stressed that in other countries worldwide, public education is up to 12 years and that it is only here in the Philippines that we follow the 10-year basic education course (6 years elementary, 4 years high school).

The Chief executive said that one reason for the decline in the quality of education is the number of years in basic education. This he said following the result of the Licensure Examination for Teachers (LET) which showed low percentage of board passers.

"Last year, only 19% passed for the elementary and 23% for the secondary in the national level and what is mor? disappointing and tragic is the LET results in the regional level" Lobregat said as he expressed his full nod and support to k+12 education system.

The enhanced K+ 12 Education program seeks to provide for a quality 12 year basic education for all Filipinos. K +12 means Kindergarten and the 12 years elementary and secondary education. Kindergarten refers to the 5-year old cohort that takes a standardized curriculum. Elementary educations refers to primary schooling that involves six or seven years of education meanwhile secondary education refers to high school. Under the K+12, the intention is not just to add two years of schooling but more importantly to enhance the basic education. (JP Alvarez-PIA)

hence can I also post our cities photos here?
is that right?

I agree with you 12jairien14 for the 1st - 4th, we have the same choices but not on the 5th, 'coz Iloilo is better than CdO. If there'll be 6th, either Bacolod or CdO could be on the right position.:)

good evening zamboanga city.........

guys anong nang yari dun sa construction ng zamboanga city convention center why did they stop the construction? maganda tlga sya if finished already.... nkta ko ung construction site nla knina when i was in atoa.

Gud evening! I'm not really sure but I heard the reason why the construction was stopped was because of its height when it will be totally finished because of its proximity to the airport...the question is bakit kasi pinayagan na magsimula ang construction kung sa bandang huli ay ipatitigil din? May building permit naman siguro? Paging City engineers' office...palpak na naman.:ohno:

Never be intimidated by any negative comments about ZC. No matter what, ZC will be great according to its being a city like no other (uniqueness) - who knows, this city will become a role model in everything, slowly but surely. hahahahahaha.... Just for contemplation: we complain that our LGU officials lack the energy exerted by the other LGU officials in fear of lagging behind, or because we are already lagging behind.... By the looks, maybe - but in reality: in economics and governance do we lag behind? We only lag behind on superficials which the others have and we don't. But remember, only few people can really appreciate and value what he already has, instead keeps on running after that which he does not have while others do.

I suggest that any Zamboangueño or Zamboangueña forumer who's been a member of SSC for more than a year now to start the 43rd thread and create the banner page for it. It's a day before Dia de Zamboanga so I guess it's just right for newbies like me to give the privilege of opening a new thread to those who came here (AND are still here - so as not to make that line sound awkward) ahead of us. Naia 3, tourism assets’ sale eyed
THURSDAY, 24 FEBRUARY 2011 22:15
THE Aquino administration is considering to privatize the Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 3 (Naia 3) and other tourism establishments, many of which were built under the term of the late strongman President Marcos.

In a lecture before students and faculty of the University of the Philippines’ Asian Institute of Tourism on Tuesday, Tourism Secretary Alberto Lim said government wants to fully operate the Naia 3, built by the Philippine International Air Terminals Co. (Piatco), by June 2012.

“By June next year we are going to open it fully. Actually, it’s being partially operated. There is no more question of ownership; the government is owning it and will fix it, and then will privatize it….”

Cebu Pacific and Air Philippines Express currently operate out of the Naia 3. The dispute over its ownership has deterred many foreign carriers from transferring their flights there. Piatco is coowned by Philippine firm PairCargo and Germany’s Fraport AG, but the Philippine government took over the Naia 3 in 2003, on grounds that there were illegal revisions in the government’s contract with the consortium.

In an interview with the BusinessMirror, Lim explained that fixing the terminal will likely involve the original contractor, Takenaka Corp. Details have yet to be worked out whether the Japanese firm will undertake the repairs solely “so government will not spend,” or if the government will spend for the repairs, then bid out the management of the terminal, he said.

He said Asia’s Emerging Dragon Corp. (AEDC) now owned by tycoon Lucio Tan is welcome to bid again for the Naia 3 management.

When the Ramos administration raised the idea of building Naia 3 in 1996, five of the country’s tycoons formed AEDC and submitted a build-operate-transfer proposal for the project. Being an unsolicited proposal, the project was subjected to a Swiss challenge which Piatco won. Since then, AEDC has been trying to claim ownership of Naia 3.

Meanwhile, other tourism establishments owned by the government through the Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority (formerly the Philippine Tourism Authority) set for possible privatization are the Banawe Hotel and Youth Hostel in Ifugao, Balicasag Island Dive Resort in Bohol, Gardens of Malasag Ecotourism Village in Cagayan de Oro, MacArthur Park Beach Resort in Leyte, Club Intramuros Golf Course in Manila and the Zamboanga Golf Course.

“What I’d like to do is to privatize, not compete, with the private sector in running tourism resorts. Before, President Marcos set up the Philippine Tourism Authority, which set up the AIT, in order to get its job started, built resorts in Banawe, in Bohol.

“But the government is not good at running a business. So I think, we can get enough visitors. If we don’t market it properly or aggressively or readily, this is not financially viable, or the government keeps subsidizing [their operations]….That’s why we have to privatize some of the assets that we have. The government should play an enabling role, not competing with the private sector,” Lim stressed.

He said the Department of Tourism (DOT) would be speaking to the Department of Finance regarding the procedures to privatize the government-owned hotels and resorts.

“My goal is to sell these assets by 2016, and raise funds for the government,” Lim said.

He added the DOT will also conduct a “highest invest-use study” for these assets “to get maximum returns for the government,” before they are sold.

There has yet to be an assessment how much these DOT assets are worth, which is needed so a floor price can be set before these are privatized.

In his lecture, the Tourism secretary also outlined the strategic directions to enable the country to reach the Aquino administration’s targeted 6-million tourist arrivals by 2016:

· Prioritizing tourism infrastructure, and connecting destinations by an improved road network as well as airports;

· Diversifying tourism products by and “go beyond the sun and the sea,” e.g., nature, culture, adventure, sports, health and wellness, retirement, and MICE (meetings, incentives, conferencing, exhibitions);

· Encouraging investments in accommodation facilities, tourism enterprises zones;

· Upgrading standards for accommodations and services on a par with international standards;

· Implementing a focused and sustained international and domestic promotion program in existing and emerging markets via travel fairs, road shows and missions; traditional media, and new media (Internet, social networking, etc.); and

· Engaging various sectors (e.g., national government, local government, private sector, nongovernment organizations, academe and local community) in tourism development.

“We are a country with many young people who don’t have jobs. So instead of exporting our young people abroad, why don’t we bring the old people of different countries here, and we can give them care?” Lim asked, in suggesting that the Philippines offers itself as a retirement haven.

While MICE is an old product, he added that the Philippines has lost its “competitive edge” in this category vis-à-vis its other neighbors, such as Malaysia and Singapore.

“We used to be No.1 in MICE. In the 1970s, we were No. 1 in conventions. We built the PICC [Philippine International Convention Center], and continue to pay the interest and loans, we became good at hosting meetings. So we were able to pay off the interest…. I want to go back to MICE [because] this is one of the high-value areas of the market. The MICE visitors pay a lot of money, stay longer, go into convention tours, stay in five-star hotels and do a lot of shopping.

· Diversifying tourism products by and “go beyond the sun and the sea,” e.g., nature, culture, adventure, sports, health and wellness, retirement, and MICE (meetings, incentives, conferencing, exhibitions);

· Encouraging investments in accommodation facilities, tourism enterprises zones;

· Upgrading standards for accommodations and services on a par with international standards;

· Prioritizing tourism infrastructure, and connecting destinations by an improved road network as well as airports;

· Diversifying tourism products by and “go beyond the sun and the sea,” e.g., nature, culture, adventure, sports, health and wellness, retirement, and MICE (meetings, incentives, conferencing, exhibitions);

· Upgrading standards for accommodations and services on a par with international standards;

Robinsons Land is expanding existing malls and will open three in 2012. The new shopping malls are located in Pangasinan, Palawan and Quezon City. - This is what I read from Manila Standard Online awhile ago. The mall here may open in 2013 yet. Perhaps together with the hotel ya. The malls in the places mentioned are under construction ya since last year pa.

Not viable pa.

How sure are we na lahat un lot nila? Halimbawa ung area ng 3rd Cup, bakit sa likod at hindi sa harap nilagay ang fence? Does anyone here know someone from City Hall or Register of Deeds or even from Robinson's itself who can show us proofs that the area or part of it really belongs to Robinson's? Para kasing speculations lang lahat. What we are all waiting lang ay yung tarp ng Robinson's na malagay sa area para confirmed na talaga pero hindi pa rin natin sigurado kung hanggang saan ang lupa nila at kung mall ba talaga ang itatayo nila dun.

Dalawa lang kasi yan, its either GO hotels or Robinsons Mall ang mag koconstruct na. ang di ko lang ma gets kung bakit nag hati pa sa lot.

Weird. The fenced lot looks kind of small for a mall (though RLc's fenced lot is much bigger than the lot of Mindpro, Yubenco, and other "big" malls in the city). If the division would mean that one of the lots will be allocated for the mall and the other for the Go Hotel, it means that the Go Hotel here will occupy such a massive lot which may be synonymous to a gigantic hotel building! Btw, aren't there some residential lots that RLC bought too?

Zamboanguenos commemorate the 74th Dia de Zamboanga celebration today, February 26, marking the day when the city was inaugurated as a charter in 1937 with the late Hon. Nicasio Valderroza as the first appointive mayor and five others as members of the City Council.

Navy Flag Officer-in-Command Rear Admiral Alexander Pama, formerly assigned as Naval Forces Western Mindanao Command chief, will be the keynote speaker during the program that will be held at the Joaquin Enriquez Memorial Sports Complex in Baliwasan at 3 PM.

The celebration today will kick off with the grand parade in the city's main thoroughfares at 1 p.m. Participants will converge at the NS Valderroza St. fronting City Hall and will march to the grandstand in Baliwasan where the city seal and the drum and lyre competitions will be held.

Commonwealth Act Number 139 otherwise known as the Charter of the City of Zamboanga was approved on October 12, 1936 by President Manuel L. Quezon. The celebration of the Dia de Zamboanga every February 26 is based on resolution 669 approved on Oct. 15, 1986 declaring Feb. 26, 1987 as the 50th anniversary of the formal inauguration of Zamboanga as a chartered city and proclaiming February 26th of every air year as Dia de la Ciudad de Zamboanga.

Last night Mayor Lobregat feted 7 institutions and individuals who have attained exceptional achievements and victories in various fields of endeavours in fitting rites dubbed "2011 Local Achievers' Award".

Highlighting this year's Dia de Zamboanga celebration is the Sineng Pambansa: Zamboanga Film Festival 2011, the first of its kind in Zamboanga, held from February 23-25 at the MIndpro Cinemas 1 and 3.

The film fest showcased 10 films and was a joint project of the Film Development Council of the Philippines and the city government.

The Dia de Zamboanga activities will continue until tomorrow, February 27 with the Zamboanga Run, a people powered run to build classrooms and organized by the People Power Volunteer center at 5am, the 4th Dia de Zamboanga Regional Karatedo Tournament Championship at the Baliwasan grandstand at 9 am, Globe's "Super Beats" featuring Rachel Ann Go and John Pratts at the city coliseum at 6pm and the Search for Zamboanga Pop Idol 2011 at the Paseo del Mar at 8pm.

Twelve institutions and individuals who have attained exceptional achievements and victories in various fields of endeavours compose the list of this year's Local Achiever Awards highlighting the Dia de Zamboanga celebration.

Mayor Celso Lobregat led city government officials last night in giving special recognition to the achievers in fitting rites held at the Garden Orchid Convention center.

The awardees, who were chosen by a screening committee, include Nestor Necessito, Leo RM Estrella and TV Patrol Chabacano (Mayor's Award), Al Hassan Hassiman (Top Individual Taxpayer), ZC Mega Shop-O-Rama Inc. (Top Corporate Taxpayer), Prof. Norma Conti (Culture and Arts), Dr. Edwina Cabato (Public Service), City Treasurer Soledad Li (City Government Service) and Dr. Anton Mari H. Lim (Community Service Posthumous awards were given to Talisayan Teacher Lorna Pulalon who was slain October 22 by an ex-convict who went on a stabbing spree in her school exemplifying love and dedication to the teaching profession and PO1 Douglas K. Pineda who was killed while trying to respond to a holdup incident downtown last November.

Businessman Atty. Arsenio Gonzales was bestowed the Orgullo de Zamboanga Premiar, the highest award intended to people whose leadership and achievements are worth emulating and an inspiration to others.

Atty. Gonzales is recognized for his invaluable services and unparalleled contribution to the growth and development of the City of Zamboanga and the region. His apolitical involvement with government agencies and public offices has been instrumental to the realization of various accomplishments which include, among others, the enactment of the Traffic Code of Zamboanga and the Investment Incentive Code of 2004. His untiring devotion to public service is manifested by his inestimable participation, then and now, to various movements and organizations which have instituted positive changes in the society.

In his message, the mayor cited the awardees for their exceptional achievements and whose feats have made Zamboanga City truly proud of.
"These are people who have made a strong and deep dedication to pursuing a particular goal. That dedication took a tremendous amount of effort."

The Local Achievers' Award is one of the pre-Dia de Zamboanga activities which culminate today with a grand parade and commemorative program to be keynoted by Navy Flag Officer-in-Command Rear Admiral Alexander Pama.

Members of the City Council and other officials joined the chief executive in presenting the awards to the local achievers.

Zambo City gov't commemorates EDSA Day (http://www.zambotimes.com/archives/28375-Zambo-City-govt-commemorates-EDSA-Day.html)

ZAMBOANGA CITY — Mayor Celso Lobregat took pride in the country's 1986 People Power Revolution, saying that even 25 years later, the Filipinos' non-violent and prayerful uprising remains unparalleled by any nation.

"It was not only people power in motion; it was the power of prayers as well. When faith in God is strong, nothing can ever trounce the good, and the Filipinos did exactly that 25 years ago to restore freedom and democracy that we now enjoy," Lobregat stressed during a program Friday in celebration of the 25th EDSA People Power Revolution.

"Our kind of revolution 25 years ago was the first ever in the world where not a single bullet was fired neither a drop of blood was shed. This illustrates today's theme, 'Tatak EDSA 25: Pilipino Ako, Ako ang Lakas ng Pagbabago,'" Lobregat added.

He urged the Zamboangueños, mostly city government employees attending the program, to make the spirit of EDSA be "our constant source of inspiration and strength as we journey towards change; change that we long for, change that fuels progress and development, change that can bring about genuine peace and harmony among all Filipinos regardless of customs and traditions."

"In the midst of all the problems confronting the country today, let us relive the true essence of EDSA and be the instrument and strength of change, because he who rejects change is the architect of decay," Lobregat said as he cited recent turns of global political events where some nations rose against dictatorial regimes.

The city's commemoration of the 25th Edsa People Power Revolution was marked by a flag raising ceremony in front of City Hall and capped by the release of yellow balloons.

Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) city director Taha Arakama spoke on the history of EDSA revolt and what it has attained to this day while City Administrator Antonio Orendain Jr. led the recitation of the government workers' oath.

City government employees wore yellow t-shirts while the City Hall and the Rizal Monument were draped with yellow ribbons. (PNA)

Mayor Celso Lobregat yesterday took pride in the country's 1986 People Power Revolution, saying that 25 years later the Filipinos' nonviolent and prayerful uprising remains unparalleled by any nation to this day.

"It was not only people power in motion; it was the power of prayers as well.
When faith in God is strong, nothing can ever trounce the good, and the Filipinos did exactly that 25 years ago to restore freedom and democracy that we now enjoy," Lobregat stressed during a program yesterday morning in celebration of the 25th EDSA People Power Revolution.

"Our kind of revolution 25 years ago was the first ever in the world where not a single bullet was fired neither a drop of blood was shed. This illustrates today's theme, 'Tatak EDSA 25: Pilipino Ako, Ako ang Lakas ng Pagbabago," he added.

The city chief executive urged Zamboangueños, mostly city government employees attending the program, to make the spirit of EDSA be "our constant source of inspiration and strength as we journey towards change; change that we long for, change that fuels progress and development, change that can bring about genuine peace and harmony among all Filipinos regardless of customs and traditions."

"In the midst of all the problems confronting the country today, let us relive the true essence of EDSA and be the instrument and strength of change, because he who rejects change is the architect of decay," Lobregat said as he cited recent turns of global political events where some nations rose against dictatorial regimes.

The mayor was particularly referring to the successful revolts in Tunisia and Egypt, where people have succeeded in ousting their leaders and attained change in governance. "But theirs were achieved at the expense of many lives lost."

"Uprising," he added, "is still unfolding as today in Libya, Bahrain and Yemen, but so many casualties had already been reported." "Many nations have tried but failed to equal our kind of revolution."

The city's commemoration of the 25th Edsa People Power Revolution was marked by the flag raising ceremony in front of City Hall and capped by the release of yellow balloons. City DILG Director Atty. Taha Arakama spoke on the history of Edsa revolt and what it has attained to this day while City Administrator Antonio Orendain Jr. led the recitation of the government workers' oath.

City government employees also wore yellow t-shirts while City Hall and the Rizal Monument were draped with yellow ribbons.

ZAMBOANGA CITY — Thousands of city government employees join in commemorating EDSA People Power Revolution held early this morning at the City Hall grounds.

Clad in their yellow shirts that perfectly matched the yellow balloons they were carrying, the employees showed their best physical way to celebrate the gains of EDSA people power revolution.

The short program ended with the "setting free" of hundreds of balloons- a symbolic action that connotes freedom. (PIA-9)

A short but meaningful ceremony was held at 8:00 this morning to mark that Zamboanga is one with the rest of the country in celebrating the historical EDSA revolution.

The program started with a flag raising ceremony with the singing of the national anthem.

Mayor Celso Lobregat gave a brief history about the non-violent and prayerful People Power Revolution, which many nations around the world have tried but failed to equal.

"25 years later, the Filipino revolution remains unparalleled by any nation. It was not only people power in motion; it was the power of prayers as well. When faith in God is strong, nothing can ever trounce the good, and Filipinos did exactly that 25 years ago to restore freedom and democracy that we now enjoy." Lobregat said in this morning's short program.

Lobregat inspiringly appealed before thousands of city hall employees present to let the spirit of EDSA be the constant source of inspiration and strength in a journey towards change; "change that we all long for, change that fuels progress and development, change that can bring about genuine peace and harmony among all Filipinos regardless of customs and traditions."

"In the midst of all the problems confronting the country today, let us relive the true essence of EDSA and be the instrument and strength of change, because he who rejects change is the architect of decay." The mayor concluded.

The meaningful celebration ended up with the "letting go" of hundreds of balloons, an act that symbolizes continuous freedom. (JP Alvarez-PIA)

Beng partner with Alcala for stepped up agri projects (http://www.zambotimes.com/archives/28376-Beng-partner-with-Alcala-for-stepped-up-agri-projects.html)

District I Representative Beng Climaco Thursday initiated talks with Agriculture Secretary Proceso Alcala for possible tie-up on implementation of agriculture-related projects in District I.

"I am very pleased because we were able to talk to him about development and potentials of district I", the congresswoman said emerging from a meeting with Sec. Alcala, who was in the city Thursday morning.

She said the discussion centered on how her congressional office can partner with the Department Agriculture for the strengthening of farm to market road projects as well as the upgrading of the facilities for the Coconut Research Center based in the city.

Sec. Alcala motored to La Paz and other areas in Ayala yesterday morning to inaugurate a DA-initiated project as well as to look into other possible undertakings in support of the farmers in the west coast.

"We have our Coconut Research Center in Zamboanga City, which is one of the most active research centers in the country", the congresswoman said. The DA, she stressed, can help strengthen the center's operation by providing the necessary requirements for the provision of good crops and for the conduct of research on therapeutic value of virgin coconut oil in the sum of P4 million.

According to Cong. Climaco, the P4M funding will pay for the conduct of the research and can help boost the productivity of coconut farmers in the west coast.

Another possible tie-up project that the lady solon tackled with the DA Secretary was the potentials of the city's fishery and agriculture resources specifically the growing of pangasius and tilapia fingerlings as well as the revival of Young Agri Pinoy Project by using idle lands for planting of vegetables and crops.

Two years ago, Climaco's congressional office, initiated the project in cooperation with the youth sector. The project was a huge success as youth groups in different barangays engaged in planting of vegetables and crops for multi-purposes.

Sec. Alcala was in Mindanao specifically Zamboanga and Jolo to look into the possibility of intensifying agri-related projects. In Jolo, he undertook projects to revive the seaweed industry.

The meeting with Sec. Alcala and other DA officials including local government officials was held during breakfast at the Garden Orchid Hotel Thursday.

Naia 3, tourism assets’ sale eyed (http://businessmirror.com.ph/home/top-news/7938-naia-3-tourism-assets-sale-eyed-)
THURSDAY, 24 FEBRUARY 2011 22:15 MA. STELLA F. ARNALDO / SPECIAL TO THE BUSINESSMIRROR

· Prioritizing tourism infrastructure, and connecting destinations by an improved road network as well as airports;

· Diversifying tourism products by and “go beyond the sun and the sea,” e.g., nature, culture, adventure, sports, health and wellness, retirement, and MICE (meetings, incentives, conferencing, exhibitions);

· Encouraging investments in accommodation facilities, tourism enterprises zones;

· Upgrading standards for accommodations and services on a par with international standards;

The MICE visitors pay a lot of money, stay longer, go into convention tours, stay in five-star hotels and do a lot of shopping.”

The corner portion is really important for Robinsons to secure so as not to comprise their planning. In any major retail project because that is where we spend the money in architectural features. The owner of that lot must be playing hardball because they know the value of it. I'm sure Robinsons property managers are doing their best to strike a deal on that.

hndi pa confirmed ang size ng mall. puro theories pa lng ang mga forumers dito. Actually, I'm getting a little excited about this development kasi ang daaaaaaaming naka line-up na constructions this this year and on aside sa mall na yan kahit nga ngayon ang daming under constructions in almost every corner of the city.... para bang, after robs.... next! then next! haha :banana:

no one really knows the size. these are just speculations based on what we see being done at their property now. we'll just have to wait until the construction begins. the area is large but we do not know how much of this will be utilized for the "mall" or the "hotel." our mayor said that groundbreaking may take place in april this year but he did'nt say if it is for the mall or hotel or whatever other project Rob is planning to do here. when the tarp is finally displayed then that's the only time we will know if it's a mall or a hotel or both.:banana:

May football field na diyan. May basketball / volleyball courts na rin pero wala pang roof, gagawin yun na parang MPCC ng Ateneo main campus eventually. Lalagyan pa ng Chapel sa likod. Meron ding swimming pool, commercial space, amphitheater, admistration office, mini theater, at tennis court. :)

Galing ng Early Birds! Punong puno yung main resto nila na nasa may Putik tas yung branch nila sa Plaza del Pilar eh puno rin. I'm not into Shawarma though. :colgate:

Trivia: Yung mga midget na nagtatrabaho dun sa bagong commercial strip sa Putik eh from CDO pala lahat. :)

Siyempre, dapat full-service mall ng sa Zamboanga... Ilocos Norte has only 22,000 sq. m but has a supermarket and department store, plus other major anchors and three cinemas... Lalaki pa kaya konti than ilocos ang Rob's sa Zambo or baka magkatulad lang sa Tacloban/Dumaguete? I bet nasa 30,000 plus ang Rob sa Zambo...
