Alingatong May 10th, 2008, 03:31 PM haba naman ng sinabi mo. hahaha!
ung cnabi kong MAMATAY SA INGGIT, it was not LITERALLY.
kung marunong kang mag isip, may city ba namamatay? i beleive may nasisira pero walang namamatay! hahahahaha!:lol::lol::lol:
and hindi ko naman inaanounce na davao is the ORGULLO DE MINDANAO!
sinasabi ko lang na as a traveler malaki ang potentials ng davao to be a new york-like city, dhel pagkalaki laki ng area nya and malayo sya sa ARMM, kung saan kinakatakutn ng mga foreigners and even kapwa nating filipinos.
kaya.. try reading first. hahaha!:lol::lol:
^^Kung alam mo mga sinasabi mo, dapat hindi ka nag-insinuate. Dapat responsible ka as a forumer at dapat walang matatapakan. Eh tanong ko lang, bat mo nasabing may mga cities na mamamatay sa inggit? Eh alam mo palang walang mangyayaring ganyan. Bat nasabi mo yon? What ever your explanation is, ni-rerespeto pa rin kita kasi iba-iba pag-iisip natin. Kaya nga may mga taong umuunlad at mayroon ding kulelat. Kaya dapat pareho tayong magbasa muna. :bash:
Eto pa. Ako marunong akong mag-isip. Ikaw? Nag-iisip ka ba? Peace
Alingatong May 10th, 2008, 04:04 PM ;20538286']pasensya na zoroe, naa man gud dir nga dili makapugong ug pahungaw sa iyang kasuya sa davao na maski zambo thread ni kay magpahungaw gihapon
Pasensya na rin zoroe and the rest. There are just people who are brave enough to probe and unravel "their" seeds of antipathy. It does not only happen in this thread. They're everywhere. :ohno:

haha... ZCHHS AND AEMSHS i beleive are not paascu accredited.
under_superior May 10th, 2008, 05:43 PM To those who are trying to prove that Davao or Zamboanga or any other city will be progress and stand out in terms of economic developments, please stop it. Pantay-pantay lahat mga lungsod dito sa Pilipinas. Please lang, ayoko nagkakasakitan ng words. I believe Zamboanga can be like Davao in the future. It's the second largest city in Mindanao in terms of population so there'll be progress soon afterwards.
Can we just pray and help the city more beautiful as it is?
yah me too i beleive zam. could be like davao in the future.
and also i beleive na wala namang nangyayaring proving dito of davao or zamboanga na naga stand out in terms of economic progress and such.
PEACE!:cheers::cheers::cheers:
under_superior May 10th, 2008, 05:47 PM there is such thing as figure of speech...Alingatong was just using one...
yah... pero, sinabi ko lang naman na mageevolve ang davao into a new york-like city because marami itong potentials.. tapos ang dami na niyang cnabi. hahaha!

PBA game live in Zambo
Local basketball buffs, together with the likes of Mark Caguioa, Helterbrand, Arwind Santos, dunk champion Canaleta, and from an array of basketball stars from Ginebra San Miguel and Air 21 teams, can now breathe altogether on May 24, 2008, Saturday, at 4 p.m. at the City Coliseum, as these two teams will collide and to show their stuff, with stoned-walled and backed up by powerful foreign imports, dubbed as “PBA in Zamboanga”.
The Federacion Basketbolista de Zamboanga (FBZ), a group of committed basketball leaders is the lead organizer, jointly sponsored by Mayor Celso Lobregat, together with the city’s two district representatives, Rep. Erbie Fabian and Rep. Beng Climaco, respectively.
Tickets are reasonably at P100 for the gallery section which can accommodate largely 8,000, while at the Box section, the ticket is priced at P350 apiece with a capacity of 1,200 seats.
To recall, the last time PBA teams came into the city was almost two years ago, but this May 24th PBA game to be featured live for Zamboanga audience is more fast-pacing, taller in heights among the players, new game plans and acrobatic plays.
“We can not afford to miss this game, as we seldom see live action right here in the city from among the country’s best basketball players,” said the FBZ.
Tickets can be bought either at Alavar’s Restaurant (Tetuan and near San Bernardino Bridge), Standard Insurance (Jaldon-Alvarez Sts.) Source Lending (Jaldon St.), Ultra Pi Water (M. Calixto St.) WMSU (Gym 6), Western Union (Southcom branch), DBP (Lorenzo St.) or at CHR office (Gov. Lim Ave.), or call telephone number 991-5414.

of course ! Zamboanga with a great port & an International airport, in no time Zamboanga will be great!
remember Zamboanga , General Santos & Davao are the ONLY cities w/ International Airports (even Visayas has only 1) in Mindanao which proves "Zambo can soar in greater heights!" literally & figuratively !
astroboy1234 May 11th, 2008, 03:55 AM That is true Zamboanga ports of entry are International. They will not name such a thing if it ain't qualified to be one. The Zamboanga International Airport and Zamboanga Seaports can accomodate huge types of air and sea vehicles. Also the local government needs to widen the road lanes (preferably 4 lanes) of the city in order to meet demand on increasing vehicles of the city and start making wider roads similar to those if you are going to Ayala. They should also start to build more four lane roads to not only to decongest traffic but also to spread out the business opportunity and not just isolate it in the city proper.
astroboy1234 May 11th, 2008, 04:19 AM As per Wikipedia the Francisco Bangoy International Airport in Davao City is the busiest airport in Mindanao while Zamboanga International Airport ranked Second followed by Lumbia Airport(Cagayan De Oro City) which will soon have an International Aiport(Laguindingan International Airport- to replace Lumbia Airport and Maria Cristina Airport of Iligan City). If completed Mindanao Will have 4 International Airports which includes the International Airport of General Santos City.

Hindi naman as always delayed ang Cebu Pacific but one thing that is good about Cebu pacific is when their flights are delayed they serve Jollibee unlike PAL but I don't know if they still serve free meals to the passengers hanggang ngayon considering mura na ang fares nila!!

Hi astro. I-correct lang natin ng konti ha? The one being constructed in Laguindingan is not an international airport. It is only a domestic airport of international standards. An airport of international standard does not automatically mean that the same is an international airport. This means that Mindanao still has has three international airports, namely: Zamboanga, General Santos, and Davao. :)

I didn't took these pictures. I found it from Picasa Web Albums, these pictures were taken by Alex.
I wanted to get some stunning shots such as the ones that I posted previously on my own. But my professional camera's (Canon Powershot G5) LCD viewfinder is broken. Wala naman nakakaayos dito sa Zamboanga. Sa Manila lang ata.

anyway having an International Airport is a BIG plus for any city :okay:

Actually, there are two Cebu pacific flights from Zamboanga bound for Manila Mon, Wed, Fri na konti lang ang distansya sa departing time. first is flight 858 followed by flight 852 and leaving 7:30 and 7:55 respectively. Baka frequent ang pagkadelay nila na the delay of the 858 flight delays flight 852. By the way flight 852 is daily.
http://i273.photobucket.com/albums/jj235/hakhaimo/5J.jpg
So from Zam to Manila their are 10 flights a week served by Cebu Pacific.

Oo naman. That's why nagtataka ako bakit hindi nabigyan ng project ang Zamboanga for the upgrade of its existing runway and terminal building facilities, consdering na international airport na ito to begin with. Though I am very optimistic that Zamboanga will have its turn sonner or later. Ang mahalaga, at least it is an international airport. What good is a modern airport facility anyway if domestic lang yung flights. :)

The runway is already rehabilitated and some of the facilities of its terminal building.
The groundbreaking of the rehabilitation of the runway was lead by her excellency Gloria Macapagal Arroyo
Here is a glimpse of Zamboanga International Airport. (My own rendition"Not yet finished") hehehe :)

Peng Hok May 11th, 2008, 12:36 PM ^^
Nice concept!
Anyway, probably what your airport needs is a new terminal building (with aerobridges of course!) since your runway has already been rehabilitated. I believe matagal na dapat kayo nagkaron ng modern terminal building since international airport yung nadyan.

Actually nagpropose yung ADB na instead i-relocate ang whole airport gagawa nalang ng bagong terminal somewhere sa northern part. But that was declined by the City Mayor or Airport Manager or Committees because it is more advantageous if the whole airport is relocated than build a new terminal. So Zamboanga is still waiting for the National Government or Foreign Investors in Materializing the new ZIA.
under_superior May 11th, 2008, 04:01 PM nice rendition hakhaimo!
and i think walang balak mag invest ang nat'l government para sa new airport natin...
baka sa next administration pwede na. hehe.
ung rehabilitation ng runway natin? pakitang tao lang un. haha
sinabi pa ni GMA(the so-called president of the republic of the philippines. hahaha!)
, sa press, this was one of her projects na hindi niya sinama sa SONA niya...
so, anu pala ung pinapalabas niya doon? haha. Debt of Gratitude natin un sa kanya? shame!(as what one of the up debaters would say.) haha!

I hope that project materializes soon. ZIA is the only airport in Mindanao, after DIA, that serves actual international flights. That is why ZIA deserves an airport terminal like, or better than, DIA.
neyoneyo80 May 12th, 2008, 12:06 AM ^^ i agree... the govt should pour money/investment where it is needed... zia needs it badly and asap...
i dont understand why they are building that "international" airport up there in the north when the folks there are already accustomed and satisfied to just taking the boat... imo lang po...
Peng Hok May 12th, 2008, 12:17 AM ^^
I-correct lang po natin ng konti ha? Hindi naman po international airport ang ginagawa doon. It is a domestic airport of international standards, which does not necessarily carry an upgrade into international airport status. It is akin to New Iloilo Airport and New Bacolod-Silay Airport. These are domestic airports of international standards. :)
neyoneyo80 May 12th, 2008, 01:43 AM ^^ correction noted po.... :)
going back to the topic, ZIA should be a real "I" and should be at par with DIA!!! all the other airports in Mindanao are domestic airports with an "I" standard (oo nga naman, para naman hindi magmukhang yagit  )
hakhaimo May 12th, 2008, 07:08 AM Is this really big for Zamboanga?

Acer_Cyle May 12th, 2008, 03:08 PM Diyan tayo magkasundo. It reminds us of how the local opposition (that is from Agan-Aranez side) wants to create a province out of the present Zamboanga City. Why not create a metropolis? But exactly districting is very logical and practical since we have 98 barangays. Those who want to divide Zamboanga into a province are very illogical.
Wait! Are the plans of having regional offices be transferred to Pagadian City and the conversion of La Bella into a province the prelude of the forced inclusion of ARMM even though we don't want to belong to ARMM? It wiill lead us to confusion and damage of unique diversity.
not literally convert into a province... but to create a new province out of Zamboanga city..... its really diferent from saying converting z.c. into a province... z.c. will remain as a highly urbanized city even the capital of the said state...
and humbly to be called it "State of Latin of Zamboanga"
its not illogical... see.. just like mandanue, lapu-lapu city, talisay city.. these are cities and municipality which are part of cebu city as a barangay(i guess).. thats why cebu city is one of the biggest city in phil's. before... pero the ciudadanos sugbuanon wants to elevate their respective place for a better or good... see now, these are all now highly urbanized city.. except for lapu-lapu city though its already a highly urbanized city just last year pero no hay mana street lights y mana drainage...
creating a new municipalities out of present Z.C. will give more or better services to these LEJANOS BARRIOS... my point here is, why not having our own state.. and should not be included any of these 3-proposal states by our respectable senadores...why not another STATE.. though it would be the smallest state of the Federal states of the philippines(if persue)..
i'm after our culture as a "Creole People" which roots from our latinos ancestors or romanicos(romance people) to be specific the Hispanic Culture that we all have... and besides, this state shall be govern by us, still Zamboangueños... wether a you are a native zamboangueño speakers or non-native zamboangueño speakers...
lastly, if our place will become a small-state, we will have our own alloted budget... also these municipalities or towns(to be created) will also have their own governance and presupuesto(budget)....
Note:
if only federalism will put into implementation...
but,
if in the present Republic of the Philippines we have right now, of course i am NOT in favor to break the historical land jurisdiction(since june 23 1635 also known as the Fundamiento del Zamboanga) of the city and create new cities or municipalities or towns out of the present z.c.
again might be the smallest state!
a state is headed by a state govenor;
a state is comprizes of provinces, and these provinces is headed by a provincial governor; and a province is comprizes of towns,municipalities and dependent cities;
lastly comprizes of independent and highly urbanized cities.
Buenas Noches con Vosotros todos!

Acer_Cyle May 12th, 2008, 03:39 PM Ah ok... so northern mindanao will compose Regions 9, 10 & Caraga while Southern mindanao will be the Davao region only. Thanks bro... :)
see... wow! but still more bettter to have our own state
"STATE OF LATIN ZAMBOANGA"
lamitan and isabela of basilan will be included here...
and that will be the smallest state...
Acer_Cyle May 12th, 2008, 03:42 PM Sorry, but I am not sure if I can remember that.
I made an estimation of the division as far as I can remember. See below:
http://i273.photobucket.com/albums/jj235/hakhaimo/Mindanao_regions.png
* The gray shaded part is northern Mindanao, the other is southern Mindanao, ARMM will be Bangsa Moro
If the episode of "The Explainer by Manolo Quezon" at ANC shown a while ago the episode about a "federal republic in the Philippines" will be posted at their website. I'll try to correct it and put the actual Division made by Pimental.
His proposal is only a draft, therefore there is a possibility for further amendments.
see... wow! but still more bettter to have our own state

lamitan and isabela of basilan will be included here...

BOB-bXu May 12th, 2008, 05:17 PM ^^ i agree... the govt should pour money/investment where it is needed... zia needs it badly and asap...
i dont understand why they are building that "international" airport up there in the north when the folks there are already accustomed and satisfied to just taking the boat... imo lang po...
neyoneyo....your location address says you are from the north....I should expect you should have known better
its not that people are too "accustomed and satisfied" with just riding boats that there is no more reason of building airports there.. I personally find that level of reasoning low and very moot..
"accustomed" means there seems to be a lot of people going to Northern ports be it in Iligan, Butuan or CDO...to travel to Visayan destinations...
a carefull homework would reveal that people from as far as where you are now (Sultan Kudarat for example) and Cotabato cluster of provinces find it easy to travel by land to any northern ports en route to Cebu, Bohol, Negros or Leyte..rather than using their home port which could take them for days either going round the Zambo Peninsula or going round Davao Gulf to reach Cebu, Bohol, Panay or Negros...
geographically the north is much endowed with favorable ship travel than the south if you want to travel to Visayas or Luzon...that is precisely the reason why you can find the entry and exit points of both central and eastern and western Nautical Hi ways on northern ports... If you have the time, you may check it out at any northern bus terminals from Butuan/Nasipit, CDO or Iligan and find the number of southern folks using these terminals as jump off to northern ports..
second, although most ongoing airport projects (new and redevelopment) in the north (Bancasi and Laguindingan) are just domestic (with planned international standards)..this does not mean they could not handle international flights... it would be better to see a regional domestic airport handling an international flight, rather than an international airport with no international flights at all... The government has learned on overspending on Gensan's Tambler International Airport which unfortunately has no international flight connections as of now.. or upgrading Cotabato's Awang in Dinaig town, with just one flight per day to Manila alone..
regarding Zambos ZIA...I would prefer, upgrading it rather transferring the whole thing to another location. I think the area of current ZIA has still room for expansion if the need warrants it. It would fail give justice to the cost if that new airport for example would be more for big planes use for military equipment to beef up military supply to a war nearby..rather than more for commercial use..
third, instead of building another airport for ZIA, it would be much better to improve other airport within ZamPen...It seems this big region is so sparsely served by just a handful of 2 airports; that of ZIA and Dipolog (at the northern part of the region)...The government should also develop Pagadian's airport facility being also the new center of regional governance..
zoroethgenre_003 May 13th, 2008, 04:25 AM see... wow! but still more bettter to have our own state

NO! nO! ..MAY MGA MALILIIT NA STATES PA..
zoroethgenre_003 May 13th, 2008, 04:29 AM ir we are going to push through the idea of federalism, we should not integrate ZAmboPen to NorMin treating it as one political subdivision..
It will surely degrade ZAmboanga's position as the center of commerce and trade in the region..
Because according to Pimentels proposal, Northern Mindanao (on which Zampen is included) sets CDO as the capital...

we all know who neyoneyo is, he only has malicious things to say about us, but as you said, considering the northern part still doesnt have an international gateway, which i think is already promptly needed considering our airports are almost atfull capacity. it wouldnt really matter where they put an intl airport in the north considering na we have good infrastructure between our cities, plus nirerenovate pa ngayon as we speak. as for ZIA, it should open more ties with other SEA countries, since malapit lang kayo sa kanila dapat nakafocus bahagya ang tourism sa kanila, especially singaporeans and malaysians :D

New Communication, Navigation & Surveillance/Air Traffic Management (CNS/ATM) Systems Development Project – purchase new CNS/ATM to consolidate regional air traffic control facilities and allow easier communication between aircraft’s, Air Traffic Management (ATM) centers and airline flight operation centers. Project cost Yen25 billion.
3. Clark International Airport (CIA) Development Project - develop CIA as the premier international airport in the country. Developments will include construction of new passenger and cargo terminals (with rail connection), new runway, taxiway, apron, and new navigational equipment. Project cost US$5 billion.
4. MIAA-New Manila General Aviation Airport - construction of a new General Aviation airport in Calamba, Laguna. Project cost US$45 million.

Found a few answers at Wikipedia,
link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zamboanga_International_Airport
....Subsequent improvements increased its capacity to hold flights. The airport used to service nearby international destinations in the past, such as Labuan and Sandakan in Malaysia. Philippine Airlines used to service international flights to and from Zamboanga to both destinations and Malaysia Airlines had flights to and from Zamboanga to Sandakan as well; these international services were eventually cut..
....On December 10, 2004, South Phoenix Airways announced their international flights to Sandakan and Kota Kinabalu in Malaysia, but it was eventually cut due to poor load of passengers.
I guess Asian Spirit has a plan of resuming flying to Sandakan...

I hope Mindanao will have its own state and Independent from Luzon, kinukuha nila yung opportunity natin for us to progress. We will have our own National Television parang ABS -CBN. Para hindi na tayo pwede siraan ng mga yan especially Manila. And this goes the same with other cities in Mindanao, they are also affected. Mindanao should solve its own problem better than solve it for others but they misinterpret it.

zoroethgenre_003 May 14th, 2008, 11:27 AM Lawyer calls for info drive on creation of 3rd district
A prominent lawyer in the city yesterday said that he favors the creation of another congressional district in Zamboanga City since it will help spur economic growth and development.
Lawyer Paul R. Ersando stressed that it is good and laudable that some local officials like the members of the City Council have already given attention to the possibility of the city to have a third congressional district.
However, Ersando stressed that before coming up with any resolution regarding the issue on the third district, the local legislative body should first conduct a series of information campaigns, public hearings and consultations in order to be able to get the true sentiment of the public.
“Before coming up with any move supporting the issue of the third congressional district, the distinguished members of the august body should first conduct the necessary public hearings and consultations on the cross-section of society especially the people who are living in the areas that will be included in the composition of a third district,” Atty. Ersando emphasized.
He added that extensive public hearings and consultations are needed for the city officials to be guided in their future stand on the issue.
“We are optimistic that by the end of the consultations and public hearings the members of the local august body will respect and abide by the will of their constituents,” Ersando, who is a past Chapter President and Regional Governor of the Integrated Bar of the Philippines ( IBP ZAMBASULTA), also stressed.
He added that having three representatives in Congress will mean additional funds from the national government to the city in terms of congressional Priority Development Assistance Funds.
The City Council in its coming session will tackle the issue on the possibility of Zamboanga City to have a third congressional district. It has also invited officials from the National Statistics Office (NSO) and the City Comelec Office to brief them on the issue regarding the requirements for the creation of another district.
Based on the latest NSO statistics, the population of Zamboanga City has reached more than 740,000, thus making it qualified to have additional congressional district.
Meanwhile, former mayor and Ecozone chairman Manny Dalipe last week also challenged local officials “to put their acts together and work for the creation of another district here in the city.” — Jemuel E. Mojica
zoroethgenre_003 May 14th, 2008, 11:29 AM Council set to tackle 3rd district creation
The issue of creating a third congressional district in the city will soon be tackled by the City Council.
In last week’s session, the Council passed a resolution inviting representatives of the National Statistics Office (NSO) and the city’s Commission on Election (Comelec) in order to brief the councilors on the possibility of creating a third congressional district in Zamboanga.
In the latest population census, NSO recorded a total of 774, 000 plus as the number of people living at present in the city of Zamboanga, thereby qualifying the city for another congressional district.
Under the law, the creation of a congressional district will only be possible if cities or provinces have reached the 250,000, the required number of population.
In the previous census, the city’s population reached 500, 000 plus, the reason why Zamboanga was entitled to a second district.
Local voters from District 1 and 2 voted two congress representatives and 16 councilors in the last 2007 election.
Since Zamboanga has met the population requirement, some sectors are now pushing for the possible creation of a third district.
The council has already discussed the matter but more details will be tackled during the May 29, 2008 regular session, Nuño said.
Mayor Celso Lobregat had earlier said that the creation of another congressional district would not be possible at the very moment because it will undergo a long process.
As a procedure, the Council will first pass a resolution addressed to the two representatives concerned, Congressman Erbie A. Fabian (district 2) and Maria Isabelle Climaco (distrist 1), for them to file the necessary bill in the Lower House for the creation of the third congressional district.
The House of Representatives will then tackle the issue in a committee level before elevting it for plenary session.
After the Lower House approves it, the bill on the creation of a third district will be forwarded to Senate for confirmation.
The possibility of having three congressional districts in 2010 election is remote because Congress has to tackle many pending bills, which are more important than the creation of a third district in Zamboanga City, said Councilor Benjamin Guingona III.
However, Guingona favors the creation of an additional district in the city.
“No matter how long it will take, what is important is that, the Council has already taken the initiative on the matter,” Guingona said. — Jimmy Villaflores

Landco Pacific Corp.
Landco Pacific Corp.
Real estate developer Landco Pacific Corp. on Wednesday reported a turnaround in 2007 as the company recognized revenues from several high-end projects that neared completion.
In a briefing, company officials said that the unit of holding firm Metro Pacific Investments Corp. (MPIC) reversed a P12.9-million net loss registered in 2006 and ended up with a net income of P261.2 million last year.
The company said it would also invest as much as P3.6 billion in a set of new projects around the country.
Landco's change in fortunes mirrored a similar picture for its parent firm, which snapped a two-year losing streak via strong revenues in 2007.
"We are very pleased with our performance in 2007," said executive vice president and COO Francis V. Ceballos. "This remarkable outcome was the result of our conscious effort to complete development in our core products--leisure communities."
For 2007, the company--which touts itself as a specialist in "leisure development"--announced revenues of P1.92 billion, or 151 percent higher than the P629 million in revenues in 2006.
According to the company, the sharp spike in revenue growth was driven by the substantial completion in development of leisure and resort properties such as Amara en Terrazas, Terrazas de Punta Fuego, Playa Calatagan and Ponderosa Leisure Farms.
These projects accounted for 84 percent of the total revenues derived from real estate sales. Another 11 percent came from hometown communities such as Waterwood Park and Lakewood City.
This year, company officials said that Landco was preparing to develop a new set of projects along the conceptual lines of existing ones.
In the pipeline are Playa Laiya in San Juan, Batangas; Playa Azalea on Samal Island, Davao; Woodridge Garden Village in Zamboanga City; and WoodGrove Park in San Fernando, Pampanga.
Total investments in these projects for the company's 2008 pipeline are expected to hit P3.6 billion, company officials said.
Landco's present portfolio includes the development of high-end leisure, urban and hometown communities, hotels and resorts, malls and central business district complexes.
With the launch and marketing of new projects last year, Landco's operating expenses rose to P884.2 million from last year's P695.8 million, an increase of 27.1 percent.
Net financing income in 2007 increased to P171.4 million from P135 million in 2006.
Landco's core net income contribution to its parent company in 2007 amounted to P139.4 million, representing 50.2 percent of MPIC's total contribution from operations for the year.

Councilor Lilia Nuño said the ERTs are formed to be able to immediately respond to any form of calamity or disaster in a particular area and render assistance to the affected people.
With the ERTs in place, Nuño said they could render immediate assistance while waiting for the arrival of concerned agencies like the social welfare and Red Cross in areas hit by a calamity.
Members of the ERT will be trained by the Philippine National Red Cross (PNRC)-Zamboanga City Chapter on how to respond during calamities or emergencies in their respective barangays.
She said each ERT will compose of 43 members, nine of whom will be trained for emergency response, nine for first aid and 23 for blood donation.

After two days the weather in the city will be fine! This was the statement of Guillermo Dulay, Meteorological Officer of Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services (PAGASA) in Zamboanga City.
In an interview, Dulay disclosed that the city is now only experiencing a so-called Southwest Monsoon that brings heavy rainfall in the region, while typhoon “Butchoy” has already left the country and presently is in Japan.
“Based on the weather monitoring instruments in our office, the region particularly the city, is still on the effect of the Southwest Monsoon left by typhoon Butchoy, but the good weather will be back in a few days,” Dulay stressed.
For almost a week the city has experienced heavy rainfall brought by typhoon Butchoy, leaving damages both in agricultural and public properties.
No less than City Mayor Celso Lobregat directed the City Disaster Coordinating Council, led by City Administrator Elias Enriquez to monitor the damages caused by the typhoon.
With Butchoy battering the city for almost a week, several properties particularly houses in the coastal areas were damaged. In the Sacol Group of Island, at least 11 families were rendered homeless after their stilt houses were damaged by strong winds and rains. In Ayala, three members of the family were injured after a coconut tree fell on their house. Seaweeds farmers in the west coast lost thousands of pesos after their farms were damaged due to big waves while fishermen were not able to go fishing due to the bad weather. These were some of the incidents rendered by typhoon “Butchoy”.
Meanwhile, the City Social Welfare and Development Office is now rounding up the city to gather data of possible displacements of residents due to floods or big waves, while the City Agriculture Office has dispatched its field personnel to check on the damages of agricultural products so that the government could initiate assistance to the affected residents. under_superior May 14th, 2008, 11:58 AM Zamboanga City (May 12) -- Mayor Celso Lobregat has expressed regrets that some foreign countries persist in focusing on Mindanao in the anti-terror campaign, emphasizing anew that terrorism is a worldwide threat.
Though the travel advisories are meant to keep the citizens of a particular country safe and sound, Lobregat said the effect however is damaging and unfair to the areas cited in the advice-giving document.
The Canadian government is the latest to have issued a travel warning to its citizens stating that "continuing reports suggest that there is ongoing terrorist threat to Westerners and Western interests in the Philippines".
"It is grossly unfair and uncalled for because I always said that the threat of terrorism is worldwide, not isolated on a particular area or city, "the mayor said. "In fact the country with the biggest and most sophisticated military facilities was bombed, the twin towers was bombed," he continued referring to the 9-11 attack in the United States.
"Even London was bombed as well as Spain," he emphasized.
He stressed that the threat on terrorism is a world wide phenomenon and what people have to do is to continue to live normal lives, "of course we have to be vigilant and alert but if we change our pattern and way of lifestyle and be affected by terrorism then we are giving the terrorists a moral victory"
On the other hand, the mayor reiterated his appeal to the media not to sensationalize stories concerning terrorism and instead help promote Zamboanga City as a peaceful and vibrant city.
He chided reporters for specifically identifying Zamboanga City as one of the areas cited in the Travel Advisory issued by the Canadian Embassy allegedly posted in the website www.voyage.gc. A check with the website showed that Zamboanga City is not specifically mentioned in the travel warning.
It can be recalled, a month ago, the US and Australian embassies also advised their citizens to refrain from visiting Mindanao due to alleged terrorist threats.
Lobregat then said when terrorists attacked the World Trade Center in New York on September 11, 2001 killing thousands of people; no country dared tag US as high risk area.
"Even the US was a victim of terrorism, but did any country tag the US as high risk area? The mayor said then. (CIO/PIA ZC)

under_superior May 14th, 2008, 12:03 PM About 50 houses have been submerged in floodwaters following continuous rains the past few days in Zamboanga City.
Residents of Lumiyap in Barangay Divisoria said they have been treading through flood and mud for over three days now.
Santiago Macrohon, Barangay Divisoria chairman, said rainwater accumulated as there is no proper drainage system in their area.
The problem is further aggravated by the creek which overflows every time rain falls, the village official said.
The residents said government officials have promised to resolve the problem during the campaign period in the last elections.
They also fear that the accumulated water will cause a rise in diseases especially among children.
Meanwhile, a family at Calunod Compound in Barangay San Roque lost their home following a landslide Tuesday morning. No one was hurt in the incident but the residents fear there might be another landslide if the weather will not normalize soon.
San Roque barangay officials visited the compound Wednesday morning to check on the status of the area and the residents there. With reports from Queenie Casimiro, ABS-CBN Regional Network Group

I think that Gaisano will be the next after the success of the opening of Plaza Fair Department Store in Midtown Plaza Zamboanga. Maybe mga next year.
And speaking of Gaisano, I think the proposed mall will be located in the western areas of the city (as reported by BusinessWorld online). If the mall is planning to build in the western areas, I think it's Ayala or near Ecozone. But it will be too far for us to shop there. So, if it's in the east, probably it's Putik or Divisoria near the new bus terminal. The east coast will serve as the new central business district in the city (eastern part but more commercially and economically competitive than the present CBD in the city proper).

That's great. The Lettermen is going to have a concert in Zamboanga two months almost from now. I remember David Pomeranz having performed eight years and three month ago in Summit Gym. Then here comes praise and worship singer Don Moen a year ago. If I'm not mistaken, a member of the Platters (all black American group whose single "Only You" is one of the top classics in the 1960s) had already performed in Zamboanga at an outdoor restaurant.
To the Lettermen, bienvenidos a Zamboanga. Have a nice visit in the city of flowers.
Chrisvenz May 14th, 2008, 01:11 PM Alam kong matutuloy na yan kasi once na magwilling ng Gaisanos na mag-invest sa Zamboanga talagang isa ito sa mga top priorities ng company.
Bakit doon? Very far! All i know, the local goverment of Zamboanga City want to establish the new CBD in these barangays: GUIWAN, PUTIK, DIVISORIA, AND BOALAN. The SM and Robinsons are still under negotiation with the local goverment, and if these Malls granted their please, they will build it in BOALAN or DIVISORIA.
mbell_791983 May 14th, 2008, 01:16 PM saan location ng Woodridge Garden Village? if matutuloy, this is the second investment of Landco in Zamboanga..diba sa kanila din and Forest Lake Memorial.
Landco has now two projects in Zamboanga.
The Forest Lake Memorial Park in Tumaga, in which Filipino artist Nemiranda designed sculptures for the park, situated near Ateneo High School.
And the Woodridge Garden Village which will be probably located at the east coast... I don't know if it's in Divisoria.
On the other hand, Filinvest's Villa San Ignacio is in the works. The main gate is already designed but there are more vacant lots to be occupied, very strategic because it is near the Ateneo High School and soon be developed into a commercial area.
mbell_791983 May 14th, 2008, 01:20 PM Bakit doon?
SM (as reported in BusinessWorld online) is going to build malls in Mindanao, namely GenSan and Zamboanga. I know that SM will gonna put a mall in Zamboanga because there are many potentials in business here in Zamboanga.
I pray na sana magkakatotoo na.
mbell_791983 May 14th, 2008, 01:21 PM Zambo City team gears for opening of Liga ng Pilipinas
The Zamboanga Basketball team (Latinos) finalizes its entry in the Liga ng Pilipinas which will kick off on May 25.
The Liga will hold its opening in three different cities across the nation. The 16-team tournament will be divided into two conferences, the northern and the southern conferences.
The northern conference is composed of eight teams from Luzon, while the southern conference will compose eight teams from the Visayas and Mindanao.
The Zamboanga team will enter its crucial stage this month as it tries to prepare for the opening of the league. The team is composed of the following players: (locals) Junie Navarro, David Sebastian, Tim Bascar, Ronald Saracho, Christopher Concepcion, Glenn Caindoy, Jonathan Parreño, Alvisn Munio, Joemic Alvarez and Beng Amil; (ex pros) Jay Mendoza and Peter Naron, and (two imports from Cebu) Jeffrey Franz and Ting Daja.
The team is hoping that the local government will support its cause to further raise its chances in having a successful debut in a national league.
Viva Zamboanga! Good luck and strive to win for Zamboanga!

It's ok as long as the summit of the ARMM is a success. Dont ever just include us Zamboanguenos to your new "state," ok?
mbell_791983 May 14th, 2008, 01:30 PM "STATE OF LATIN ZAMBOANGA" will be an independent state... The local government of zamboanga are trying to submit and making statement why should zamboanga will not be include in Northern Mindanao State and be an Independent State. *rumors lang*
Guys! Is Zamboanga City is an Independent City ba?
Zamboanga is really an independent city besides chartered, since it is not associated with Zamboanga de Sur's jurisdiction. And it's the only highly-urbanized city in ZamPen.
hakhaimo May 14th, 2008, 01:57 PM "STATE OF LATIN ZAMBOANGA" will be an independent state... The local government of zamboanga are trying to submit and making statement why should zamboanga will not be include in Northern Mindanao State and be an Independent State. *rumors lang*
Guys! Is Zamboanga City is an Independent City ba?
May I ask to what Zamboanga are you referring to, Zamboanga Peninsula or Zamboanga City which will not be included in Northern Mindanao.
hakhaimo May 14th, 2008, 02:06 PM it's nice!
pero, in reality di siya bagay sa location ngayon ng zia natin. hehe.
peace!
Pero Sayang din kasi hindi na utilize ang buong apron. But I'am hoping for Zamboanga to have an airport at the east coast. I read from an article that once the ZIA will be transferred the old airport will be sold, as far as I can remember it costs 5.++ bilyon...
hakhaimo May 14th, 2008, 02:09 PM wow! sana magkatotoo. i like your design, may cultural relevance. keep it up.
Thanks for appreciating it!
Hango to sa Current ZIA terminal but I made the roofs bigger and wider. I think it will be expensive to have multiple small spiking roofs.. hehehe
Chrisvenz May 14th, 2008, 02:11 PM May I ask to what Zamboanga are you referring to, Zamboanga Peninsula or Zamboanga City which will not be included in Northern Mindanao.
Zamboanga City Only! If Zamboanga City will be an independent State, Zamboanga City economic will sure high to the top like hong kong and macau...
hakhaimo May 14th, 2008, 02:12 PM Totoo..because this design requires more spacious area..like Mercedes, Boalan, Divisoria or even Culianan..
Kasi if sa present location natin Xa ilalagay, it will cause the surrounding residential as well as commercial areas to be demolished..
I did not intend to put a new terminal there, it is just a size comparison of the ZIA that I made with the current ZIA. GearX requested for this...
hakhaimo May 14th, 2008, 02:15 PM not galaxy mall, ung sa harap ng galaxy mall, ung alta mall...
I think someone had stopped the galaxy mall, or someone is against it. As far as I can remember my father was given a magazine/brochure all about the proposal for Galaxy mall in Zamboanga... It was very big... It has 8 cinemas... It also contain its blueprint on top view for every floor.
hakhaimo May 14th, 2008, 02:38 PM Council set to tackle 3rd district creation
Yes! another district... another voice for Zamboanga City at congress
hakhaimo May 14th, 2008, 02:51 PM yes true..San Ignacio vs Woodbridge if ever..
I hope that there will be more competitors coming into Zamboanga as far as real estate industry in Zamboanga is concerned. According to my instructor in Business Policy/Strategic Management - "The greater the competition in an industry, the attractive and healthier the industry will be".

Siguro both parties. The Chinese investors are warning the government of Zamboanga about SM, Robinsons and Gaisano... I don't know why, but all i know is that these news is a "rumor" only...

zamboanga won't be included i believe, the marawi/lanao (?) towns of iligan and sultan kudarat should be,
if armm wants to extend, they should just fight (in peaceful terms lang po) to include cdo (making it perhaps the armm capital and thus attaining the premier city status it's longing for, imo, butuan is just too far and should remain a part of the non-armm mindanao regions... imo lang po ito....

bai Neyo, i dont think Iligan wants to be part of ARMM state if meron man. isa pa, i dont think ARMM is longing to be a PREMIER city/region/state. but if they want CDO to be part of it, so to be progressive, why not? its a complement and CDO would love to help its neighbors para umangat din. pero bai Neyo, wag mo maliitin kakayahan ng ating mga moro brothers parang discrimination yan. last, if Zamboanga will be part of Northern Mindanao state and Zamboanga City the capital, OK lang din yun. at least premier city yun, plus CDO booming city di ayos ang combination. sana di na lang i-label ang CDO as premier city kasi misleading yata. bagay yan sa mga BIG cities like Davao, Cebu, Zamboanga, Manila etc. :)

windlady May 15th, 2008, 01:06 AM Ecotourism project proposal passes pre-evaluation screening
Thursday, May 15, 2008
THE business proposal of the Dulian Farmers Multipurpose Cooperative of Barangay Dulian, Upper Bunguiao, Zamboanga City, confirmed the "Waterfalls Ecotourism Project" has passed the pre-evaluation screening.
Proponents of the project said the proposed site, which is intended for Grassroots Entrepreneurs for Ecotourism (Greet), would soon be visited for evaluation.
A letter from Daniel G. Corpuz, executive director of the Philippine Convention and Visitors Corporation (PCVC), states that after the on-site visit, the proposal will be subjected to final valuation by the Evaluation and Judging Committee, prior to the final approval by Tourism Secretary Joseph "Ace" Durano.
City Councilor Rogelio L. Valesco, chairman of the Committee on Tourism, Culture and Arts and Foreign Relations, endorsed the proposal to Secretary Durano.
In the accompanying letter, Valesco said, "I believe any favorable support to the said application can very well spell interest and enthusiasm for the people of Mindanao, particularly in Zamboanga City, to nurture the natural treasures found in profusion in the area."
Valesco said the approval would eventually help promote Zamboanga City as a worthy destination to visit or live.

as of now kasii..the west coast is the most promising area in Zamboanga because of the location of the Zamboanga Ecozone, First Industrial Park etc..it caters more room for investments..unlike in the east coast..
IMO..the trend of development is heading to the west coast..that is why its more strategic to build malls and other infras in that part of the city..

POlitically and administratively we are not under Zamboanga del Sur..the inclusion of Zamboanga City in some aspects to Zamboanga del Sur is purely for postal services..
And chartered cities does not directly connote that it is an independent city..Chartered City means a city created under a charter/law/statute. .and not all highly urbanized cities are independent cities..like Lucena, its HUC but its not independent.

zoroethgenre_003 May 15th, 2008, 08:56 AM Rep. Fabian’s 3 boxers bring home 3 medals
Zamboangueño amateur boxers under the Blue Statllion Stable of Congressman Erbie A. Fabian have again brought pride and honor to Zamboanga City by bagging one gold medal and two bronze medals in the recently concluded National Youth Open and Women Amateur Boxing Championship held in Iloilo City on May 4-10, 2008.
Eumir Marcial grabbed the gold medal in the kid weight division, 33 kilos category. Jayson Borleo won bronze in the cadet division, lightflyweight category. Angelo Marcial also won bronze medal in the cadet division pinweight category.
The boxers were accompanied by trainers Gaga Maquilan, Felix Tañamor and Eulalio Marcial.
“Our boxers are strong and highly-competitive. With continuous training and support, we will already see more champions coming from Zamboanga City in the near future,” Maquillan said.
He added that the city has a lot of good and promising boxers and all they need is support.
He expressed gratitude to Congressman Fabian for his consistency in providing support and assistance to both amateur and professional boxers here in the city.
The three boxers are graduates of the Golpe-Golpe na Barangay which was conceived by Fabian when he was still vice mayor.
Meanwhile, the Golpe-Golpe na Barangay is slated to be held in Divisoria next month.
Coordinator Arsenio “Rawhide” Nuevo assured that residents of Divisoria and nearby barangays will be treated with exciting amateur bouts from young local pugs coming from the different barangays in the city. — Jemuel E. Mojica
zoroethgenre_003 May 15th, 2008, 08:57 AM ‘Amores’ team launched, receives P230M support
The Zamboanga Amores, the city’s entry to the Liga ng Pilipinas, a national basketball league that will kick off on May 25, has received some P230,000 in pledges to help defray the team’s expenses.
The pledges were made by local prominent personalities led by Congressman Erbie A. Fabian and businessman Lepeng Wee when the team was launched in a dinner ceremony at the Marcial Garden Hotel last Tuesday night.
Wee committed an initial amount of P100,000, while Fabian pledged P50,000 in personal fund and other future support to the team. The Federacion Baketbolista Zamboanga (FBZ) composed of top officials Pedro Alfaro Jr., Atty. Jose Mamauag, Joe Villano, Edgar Galea and Nonoy Elopre chipped in P10,000.
Other prominent businessmen like Lope Iringan, Bong Wee, Luis Alvarez, Virginia Hong and Tony Ituralde likewise committed financial support to the team.
Rolando Navarro, one of the principal organizers of the Zamboanga Amores, had earlier shelled out P1.2 million for the registration and franchise of the team in the Liga ng Pilipinas.
“This is a dream come true for the Zamboangueños to finally have a basketball team in the national basketball league. This is a worthy endeavor initiated by Mr. Navarro that deserves the full support of all of us here,” Rep. Fabian declared.
Fabian said that having a basketball team playing in a national league will surely help promote Zamboanga City both in sports and tourism.
“It would also showcase the skills and prowess of Zamboangueño players especially at this time that the city is already being noted for quality basketball players after our team bagged the basketball championship in this year’s National PRISAA,” said Fabian, who has been consistent in helping in the promotion and development of sports.
The Zamboanga Amores is composed mostly of Zamboanga City players who bagged the champhionship in the National PRISAA.
Zamboanga Amores, whose name is derived from Rep. Fabian’s famous slogan “Amor Con Amor Se Paga,” is composed of promising players like Jeffrey France, Ronald Saracho, Titing Daja, Lary Necesito, Beng Amil, Glen Caindoy, Mark Kong, Peter Naron, Wang Alvarez, Tim Bascar, Alvin Munio, Emrey Ramirez, David Sebastian, Cristopher Concepcion and Jonathan Pareño.
The players have vowed to put the map of Zamboanga City in the national basketball conference this year.
Meanwhile, District 2 Councilor Lynette Marcos-Abarro has disclosed that she will make strong representation in the City Council particularly in the Committee on Sports to identify possible budget allocation to help the Zamboanga Amores team.
“We in the Council will find ways and means to help provide support to our Zamboanga team,” Abarro stressed.
The Liga will hold its opening in three different cities across the nation. The 16-team tournament will be divided into two conferences, the northern and the southern conferences.
The northern conference is composed of eight teams from Luzon, while the southern conference will compose eight teams from the Visayas and Mindanao.— Jemuel E. Mojica

mbell_791983 May 15th, 2008, 03:00 PM Siguro both parties. The Chinese investors are warning the government of Zamboanga about SM, Robinsons and Gaisano... I don't know why, but all i know is that these news is a "rumor" only...
It's just actually rumors only. Wala naman report na ganon according to James Makasiar, president of Zamboanga City Chamber of Commerce and Industry. Kung pagbabasehan ung "lobbying" ng mga Chinese investors against the entry of major mall developers, ang explanation niya is:
THE MAJOR MALL DEVELOPERS ARE NOT YET SUCCESSFULLY BUILD ANY MALL HERE BECAUSE OF TOO MUCH RETAIL STORES IN THE CITY
And speaking of the Filipino Chinese, they are in greed and have a great monopoly in order to block the entry of SM, Gaisano, etc... That act is a tantamount of corruption and therefore is a selfish and corruptive act. To the businessmen who want to stop Zamboanga from being competent as CDO, Davao, GenSan, wake up! This is our city. Not just only yours. Tsaka di naman masyado maganda yung mga malls na tinatayo niyo. Ang Southway lang siguro at Mindpro lalo na pwedeng maging considered as major malls.
Ang Shoppers' stores naman, they are trying their best to lure us shoppers para sa mga produkto nila. Pero ang sa loob pala'y masikip, not orderly. Siguro jealous lang sila... They want Zamboanga as if katulad ng Binondo.
Why not make Zamboanga The Binondo of the South if they don't like the present branding?

Harry Tañamor, the country’s lone bet in the 2008 Olympics, will be seeing familiar faces when he plunges into action in the August Games in Beijing.
In an official list posted on the International Boxing Federation (Aiba) web site, Tañamor’s possible road blocks to an Olympic gold medal include Zou Shiming of China, Luis Yañez of the United States and Amnat Ruenroeng of Thailand.
Tañamor fights in the 48-kg division.
Shiming defeated Tañamor, 17-3, for the gold medal in the 2007 World Championships in Chicago last year.
On his route to the finals though, Tañamor beat Ruenroeng in the semifinal round, 16-8, then made a splash in the tournament as he beat Yañez, a hometown boy, during the quarterfinal round of the Chicago meet.
Also included in the 28-man field are World Championship bronze medalist Nordine Oubaali of France, Hovhannes Danielyan of Armenia, Patrick Barnes of Ireland and Georgiy Chygayev of Ukraine. All finished in the top five in the last World Championships.
Tañamor is one of seven boxers from Asia who qualified for Beijing. There are also six pugs from Africa, six from the Americas, eight from Europe and one from Oceania.
“It will all depend now on the experience and preparation of the boxers and the draw,” Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippines president Manny Lopez said.
Lopez said Tañamor is still in deep training in Cuba and will head back to Manila this month.
Tañamor is also expected to compete in the first Aiba President’s Cup International Tournament from May 25 to 31 in Chinese-Taipei.
International Olympic Committee representative to the Philippines Frank Elizalde, in a radio interview, spoke highly of Tañamor.
“He is not given much credit, but let us not forget that he is a silver medalist in the World Championship,” said Elizalde during the Usapang POC radio program on dzSR Sports Radio.

mbell_791983 May 16th, 2008, 04:34 AM cool ka lang... Malapit ng Palitan si LOBREGAT!!! hahaha lolx, The Chinese Investor must face what TRUE COMPETITION IS... Napapahiya tuloy sila... The local government are trying to convince investors to invest in this city, tapos may mag iinvest na iiwan pa nila... HOW STUPID!!!
IF THEY WANT ZAMBOANGA WILL BE THE BINONDO OF SOUTH, NAKU LILIPAT NA LANG AKO SA KARATIG NA PROBINSYA O CUIDAD KAYSA MANATILI SA ZAMBOANGA PURO CHINA AND FAKE PRODUCTS NAMAN ANG BINEBENTA! Sa MINDPRO, SECOND FLOOR LANG ANG THE BEST, sa buong Zamboanga, doon ka lang makakabili ng BRANDED AND ORIGINAL STUFFS.
Wait...
It seems like gagawing Binondo ang Zamboanga... Kasalanan ng Fil-Chinese ang isolation ng Zamboanga from every highly-urbanized cities... Malala pa, dahil sa luho ng Pagadian!
But this is also true. Most of the products are fake and substandard... like Maker, Unisales, Yubenco... You'll find nothing! Tsaka sa mga Fil-Chinese, wake up... You do not know what true competition is? Selfish business kayo...
I also saw fake goods sa isang Shoppers' store. And most of the stores by Shoppers' are not orderly, dirty tsaka vulnerable pa sa accidents tulad ng stampede. Mukhang substandard ata mga facilities nila. I burst my anger on this because a Shoppers' Center employer reacted that SM will not rise in Zambo, gusto nila sila ang maghari. Selfish, as in very selfish. Siguro, parang kokonti lang ang nagshoshop sa Shoppers' dahil sa very offensive attitude about competition. Ayaw nilang malugi business nila but in fact nawawalan na ng gana.
Zamboanga will feel very downed by Pagadian as the latter will have Gaisano Capital Mall. There in Pagadian, lahat ng da best andun na, talo ang Zamboanga dahil puro peke at substandard ang mga produkto.
mbell_791983 May 16th, 2008, 04:39 AM I fell inlove with Zambo. Ang ganda talaga...
Ganda nga lang pero still wala pa ring pagbabago in terms of commercial development.
Kasalanan ni PGMA-Mayor Co-Gov. Cerilles (aka the Formidable "Bizarre Love Triangle" (hic, kuno) of Pagadian to destroy Zamboanga's beautiful future).

This is the first time Philippines will send its lone boxer to the Olympics.
Worst (maybe), the team will be among the leanest in Southeast Asia with 15 less athletes. But we will pray that even this small, the Philippines will finally get the Olympic medal (after 8 years, or if not gold).
mbell_791983 May 16th, 2008, 05:09 AM Zamboanga is...
City of Flowers
Pride of Mindanao
Asia's Latin City (in which opponents dislike the idea because it is associated with Latin America which crimes are rampant)
or...
Binondo of the South (that's very appropriate branding because most of the city's stores, especially major malls, sell fake and substandard goods from China (mainland))
Which nickname do you best like?
GearX May 16th, 2008, 05:34 AM mas gusto ko City of Flowers...as in Zamboanga Hermosa.
Chrisvenz May 16th, 2008, 06:08 AM Wait...
Cav74 May 16th, 2008, 09:23 AM LT GEN YANO: AFP's new chief of staff
Lieutenant General Alexander Yano has assumed as the 38th Chief of Staff of the 120,000-strong Armed Forces of the Philippines replacing the General Hermogenes C Esperon Jr in a ceremony presided by President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo at the General Headquarters in Camp Aguinaldo, Quezon City.
The new Chief of Staff is known as the 'Soldier's soldier" for his professional competence and excellent leadership that earned him the respect and admiration of his men, colleagues, and superiors. It was no doubt that such sterling performance and uncompromising leadership are also well recognized and appreciated even by our civilian leaders allowing him the rare privilege to lead the country's armed forces.
Lt Gen Yano or 'Onay' as he's fondly called by his classmates was born on June 13, 1953 in Sindangan, Zamboanga del Norte. He was a consistent honor student during his school days in his home province of Zamboanga del Norte. He was in his third year taking up BS Civil Engineering course at the Cebu Institute of Technology when he answered the call of military service by entering the Philippine Military Academy in 1972.
A member of PMA "Magilas" Class of 1976, Lt Gen Yano spent his early years in the military service mostly in combat assignments in Northern and Central Luzon and the provinces of Samar during the height of CPP/NPA rebellion in the 70s and 80s. From there, he has held various key positions in both field and garrison units where he displayed outstanding performance in the field of intelligence and operation that prepared him for higher positions of major responsibility in the military hierarchy.
A well-respected general who spent most of his military career in the field, Lt Gen Yano underwent various military trainings that prepared him for his future positions. He consistently excelled in all the trainings he attended, both in academics and physical proficiency. These courses include, among others: the Special Forces Operations Course, Field Artillery Officers Course, Pre-Command Course for Battalion Commanders, and Command and General Staff Course. He was also in the Commandant's List when he took up the Infantry Officer Advance course at the US Army Infantry School, Fort Benning, Georgia in the US..
Among his significant positions and duty assignments include: Commander of the Southern Luzon Command; Commanding General of the 2nd Infantry Division; the Chief of Staff, Philippine Army; Commanding General of the Civil Relations Service of the AFP; Assistant Division Commander of the 9th Infantry Division in Bicol; Commanding General of the 601st Infantry Brigade in SOCSARGEN area, and Commanding Officer of the Task Force Zamboanga.
He had a successful stint curbing terrorism in Mindanao when he became Commander of Task Force Zamboanga in 2001 where he successfully handled the Cabatangan Crisis in Zamboanga City. His extraordinary skill in crisis management resulted to the rescue of civilian hostages from the elements of the Misuari Breakaway Group occupying the Cabatangan Complex who initially utilized the civilians as human shields.
As the Commander of the 601st Infantry Brigade in the SOCSARGEN area, Lt Gen Yano initiated various anti-terrorism programs to address the terrorist threats in the area and successfully won the support and cooperation of the different sectors to support such undertakings. Such initiative resulted to a much improved security situation in the region which paved the way for an increased economic activity and sustenance of development projects in the region.
In July 7, 2004, Lt Gen Yano was appointed as Chairman of the Government of the Republic of the Philippines (GRP) Coordinating Committee Cessation of Hostilities (CCCH) which oversees the ceasefire agreement with the MILF. Being a Mindanaoan, he carried out his responsibilities with utmost dedication in promoting a peaceful atmosphere in the conflict affected areas in Mindanao allowing both sides to pursue the peace negotiations in the pursuit of lasting peace in Mindanao.
As Commanding General of the 2nd Infantry Division and later on as the Commander of the Southern Luzon Command, he actively engaged with the different stakeholders of the society such as the business groups, student sector, academe and the religious sector to gain their support towards working together in addressing the communist insurgency. Such innovative approach of Lt Gen Yano insulated a very potent sector of our society from the deceptive propaganda employed by the CPP-NPA-NDF. During his stint as the Commander of Southern Luzon Command, the traditional bailiwicks of the rebels in the Bondoc peninsula were slowly cleared from communist influence while government troops were successful in flushing out the NPA forces in the area. This was a manifestation of the renewed support and cooperation of the local populace to the AFP's counter insurgency campaign in Southern Luzon. Lt Gen Yano was also instrumental in supporting various government-initiated development projects and in the conduct of disaster rescue operations in the aftermath of the Mayon Volcano eruption on July 2006 and the destruction brought by Typhoon Reming in the province of Albay on December 2006.
He was appointed as the 49th Commanding General of the Philippine Army on August 24, 2007 following the retirement of Lt Gen Romeo Tolentino. As the Army Chief, he emphasized the importance of taking care of the soldiers as the organization's prime resource. He emphasized that each and every individual to the collective effort of team ARMY in the accomplishment of its mission.
As the Chief of the Philippine Army for almost 9 months prior to his assumption as CSAFP, Lt Gen Yano has advocated programs to benefit the soldiers and improve the Army's operational capability so that it would be responsive and attuned to the changing nature of warfare.
As a testament to his meritorious performance, he is a recipient of various military awards and decorations to include, 5 Distinguished Service Stars, Philippine Legion of Honor (Degree of Officer), 4 Outstanding Achievement Medals, Gold Cross Medal for Gallantry in Combat, Bronze Cross Medal, 27 Military Merit Medals, the Gawad sa Kaunlaran, Silver Wing Medals, Honorary PAF Gold Wings, Honorary Flag Rank Command Badge, and the Royal Thai Army Honorary Parachutist Badge. More importantly, he has also received accolades and recognition from various groups, NGOs and local chief executives for his contribution in promoting peace and security in the areas where he was formerly assigned.
As he climbs a step higher to assume the leadership of the Armed Forces of the Philippines, the 120,000-strong AFP is filled with much optimism that the military organization would competently overcome challenges with renewed pride as it continues to perform its mandate as protector of the People and the State.
"Being the AFP chief is a rare chance to carry on a noble mission for a better Armed Forces," says Lt Gen Yano.

under_superior May 16th, 2008, 10:03 AM without them our country will be more corrupt. Terrorism is already a trend in all countries. Without those uneducated people, there will be no development and enhancement. :) AND HOW CAN YOU FIND PEACE IF YOU CANT FIND WAR?
the answer is simple. if there's no war, then it is peaceful! hhaahaha!

kung di makapasok ang sm or other big malls dito, dahil na rin 'yon sa wala silang maktang big market potentials dito, or someone is blocking them, it could be the fil-chinese businessmen or it could be simply just be the so-called "word of mouth." we all know that some people in the country thinks that zamboanga is not a safe place to live at and establish business/es. hindi naman rin siguro mag iinvest ang sm ng P100M or so, kung hindi ideal ang location, if magtatayo sila sa ayala for example. ano ang mode of transportation ng zamboanga city? diba jeep at tricycles? hello? papayag ka ba namang mag tricycle/jeep papntang ayala? kung meron namang malls dyan sa downtown? hahahaha.
kaya dapat ang gawin ng government, remove the tricycles and replace it with taxis.
under_superior May 16th, 2008, 10:27 AM terrorism? a trend in other countries?para pampa-boost ng economy? countries like what?
pag may terrorism, kailangan ng government mag invest ng more money, kung kulang pera, mangungutang sila sa world bank or maybe sa china nanaman, or other rich countries.
marami naman sa atn ang nakakaalam na china is trying to proclaim spratlys as theirs, pero ang totoo'y atin 'yan.... so ang lalabas marami na nga tayong utang madadagdagan pa?
