Mayor defends Latin City tag of Zamboanga
ZAMBOANGA CITY – Mayor Celso L. Lobregat said the other day that Zamboanga’s new branding as "Asian Latin City" is based on the fact that it is the only city in the Philippines and Asia where most of the people speak Chabacano, a Spanish derivative language.
He told participants in the 10 annual Regional Biology Teachers Association of the Philippines (Biota) convention and scientific sessions held at the Zamboanga State Polytechnic college on Oct. 3-4 that Zamboanga is aptly called Asia’s Latin City because of its rich and colorful history and culture that form part of the imprints of Spanish three-century regime.
Lobregat said that in Roman times, Latin was the dominant language, but as the Roman empire declined, other languages evolved out of the Latin language and one of these was Spanish, which is one of the three Roman languages (Portuguese and French).
He said that a study conducted by a professor of the Western Mindanao State University (WMSU), respected historian Hermenegildo Malcampa showed that 1,400 Chabacano words originated from Latin.
Noting that the city’s celebration of the Pilar fiesta began during the Spanish era and citing the customs and traditions of Zamboangueños up to this day, the mayor said "history is there, we can not erase this from the books, it is part of our culture and part of our tradition."
"Contrary to the claim of critics, we don’t refer to the old Roman latin, but the language derivative of the Chabacano dialect, which is Spanish like Mexico," Lobregat said.
Historian Malcampo had earlier said that 20 republics (not Colombia alone) comprise Latin American because of their Spanish derivative languages, which include Portuguese and French.
"They are known as Latinos in America, and hence we have the latin dances and songs. It does not necessarily mean they are the latins from Rome or Italy. They are from Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay, and Venezuela. The term also used to include Puerto Rico, French West Indies, and other islands of West Indies where Spanish derivative language is spoken." (Vic Arevalo)
GearX October 8th, 2007, 06:31 AM Zambo dads okay new bus terminal
ZAMBOANGA CITY — The construction of this city’s multimillion-peso integrated bus terminal can start anytime after the city council on Thursday approved the proposed plan and design submitted by Quezon City-based Metro Stonerich Corp.
Metro Stonerich estimated roughly P200 million for the construction of the Integrated Transport Terminal and Commercial Complex on a 3.8-hectare lot. The city government has paid P64 million for the lot located in Barangay Divisoria, about seven kilometers from the city’s central business district.
The bus terminal project was originally estimated at P180 million with costing revised later to P316 million. The project was originally scheduled to begin implementation before the end of the 2006 but it was delayed until this year.
Eliseo A. Aurellado, Metro Stonerich’s vice-chairman, said the proposed bus terminal will include not only bus station facilities but also a commercial complex that will eventually serve as hub for agriculture-based products coming from nearby towns and provinces. The proposed design was unanimously approved by the city council with minimal modification.
Mr. Aurellado said at least 70% of the area will be used as parking space for the buses as well as jeepneys and tricycles.
"The design concept which is Badjao-inspired jibes with the city’s mixed cultural history," said Councilor Rogelio L. Valesco, Jr. who serves as chairman of the committee on tourism.
Mayor Celso L. Lobregat has earlier created "Task Force IBT (Integrated Bus Terminal) Pronto" to hasten the project.
GearX October 12th, 2007, 05:02 AM Zamboanga’s vintas featured in regatta
ZAMBOANGA CITY — The scorching heat of the Sunday sun jibed with the adrenaline rush of the boat racers who joined this year’s "Regatta de Zamboanga."
Vintas lined up on shore Over a hundred sailors, mostly from Badjao and Sama Banguingui communities, attempted to conquer the sea with their sailboats.
"The vinta has been the city’s icon, and it’s necessary for us to preserve this image," said Mayor Celso C. Lobregat.
Cecile C. San Juan who chaired this year’s regatta said the flotilla race is part of the month-long celebration of Zamboanga Hermosa. The city will observe the Fiesta Pilar, which honors La Virgen del Pilar, the city’s patron saint on Oct. 12.
"This is the 33rd time we’re holding this regatta," she told BusinessWorld, adding that the race was considered to be one of the most challenging in western Mindanao.
"Our main purpose here is for this colorful sail to be revived and preserved through the years amid the advent of the motorized boats, and to basically be different from other regatta events," she said.
"We consider this regatta as one of the major events every time we celebrate the Zamboanga Hermosa festival," said councilor Rogelio L. Valesco, Jr. who chairs the local committee on tourism.
"The celebration of Fiesta Pilar is not only for the Christian community but also for the diverse ethnic communities we have here," he said, pointing out how the sail "reflects the true colors of Zamboanga’s culture and heritage."
Compared with other regattas, participants only use wood paddles.
"It’s very traditional," Ms. San Juan said, adding that the sails of the major winners become property of the city government.
Winners
In this year’s contest, the tandem of Buni Asgali, 36, and Patta Isna, 28, both Sama Badjaos who live in the eastern coastline of the city crossed the finish line first.
When asked what their preparations were before joining the race, Mr. Asgali said "applying harmony in our skills and constant practice."
For many years, the highlight of the regatta was the battle between teams from the city’s east and west coasts. This year, the east coast crew won the race.
Mr. Isna said since he earned his living as a fisherman and a seaweed grower, most of his time was spent in the sea with his banca.
"I have been joining this race for the past five years and I’m grateful that I finally won," Mr. Asgali said in a mixture of Filipino and Tausug.
Messrs. Asgali and Isna shared a cash prize of P10,000 while the four other top placers received amounts ranging from P2,000 to P7,000.
Visitors who want to experience riding vintas can check out the tour package offered by the Lantaka Hotel that includes a boat ride along the city’s coast.
A tourism committee official said he is looking at the possibility of grouping sailboats in the city into an association and tapping them for tourism services.
"That will be extra income for our Badjao and Sama Banguingui communities here," he said.

Farirah October 12th, 2007, 05:02 AM Residents of Zamboanga City celebrate today feast of Señora la Virgen del Pilar
By VIC P. AREVALO

ZAMBOANGA CITY — A colorful parade of floral floats and three other crowd-drawing activities featuring the city’s unique multi-cultural heritage were the attractions at the Zamboanga Hermosa Festival yesterday, the day before the feast day of Nuestra Señora la Virgen del Pilar.
The revelry started at 1 p.m. with the parade of floats bedecked with flowers from Canelar St. to Cesar Climaco Ave. to J. S. Alano St. where an improvised stage was set up for the affair.
This was followed by the colorful and lively street dance parade and showdown.
US Economic Counselor Larry Memmont represented American Ambassador Kristie Kenney as the guest of honor at the main program held at the stage in front of the historic City Hall.
Mayor Celso L. Lobregat led city officials in welcoming Counselor Memmont and other guests to the Zamboanga Fiesta Hermosa 2007 program that culminated with the awarding of the winners in the floral float and street dance competitions.
In addition to the Feast Day of Our Lady of Fort Pilar, Zamboanga City is celebrating its anniversary as a city, pursuant to Commonwealth Act No. 39 signed on Oct. 12, 1936.
From the open stage in front of City Hall, the festivity moved to the R.T. Lim Blvd. where some 12,000 cans of sardines were laid for the boodle fight dubbed "Wow Sardinas... di aton este,’’ an activity that sought to place Zamboanga in the Guinness Book of World Records as the longest sardines-eating activity. The length of the boodle fight tables is three kilometers.
The sardines-eating activity occupied the whole length of R.T. Lim Blvd. starting from the Philippine Ports Authority gate to the area in front of the sangguniang panlungsod building (about three kilometers) where makeshift tables were set up on the boulevard’s shoreline for the boodle fight that was spearheaded by Mayor Lobregat.
The celebration was capped by a street party dubbed Fiesta Regalo Concert sponsored by Mayor Lobregat and San Miguel Corp. at the open stage starting at 6 p.m.
Featured in the concert were Manila-based bands Greyhoundz, Mayonnaise, and Typecast.

Ex!lE October 15th, 2007, 02:11 AM Asia’s Latin City known for arts, culture
(http://www.mb.com.ph/PROV20071015105769.html)
By VIC P. AREVALO
ZAMBOANGA CITY – Zamboanga, Asia’s Latin City is fast becoming a center of culture and arts.
This was stressed recently by Mayor Celso L. Lobregat as he led the simultaneous opening of two art exhibits the other day – one at the Maria Clara Art Gallery in La Vista del Mar and the other at the Gallery of the Peninsula and the Archipelago in Ateneo de Zamboanga University (ADZU).
The exhibit at the Maria Clara Art Gallery is dubbed ‘Muse Revisited’ featuring the art works of the Hugis Kulay Zambaoanga Art Group that include Edwin Jumalon, Enteng Laput, Lorna Fernandez, Leo Marquiala, Remigio Demiar, Joey Dollete, Romel Racho, Bong Panganiban, Lintoy Siason, Pilong Torino, Raul Bendanillo and Don Guerrea.
‘Sur,’ the second solo art exhibit of internationally acclaimed Rameer Tawasil, is the ongoing exhibit at the ADZU’ Gallery of the Peninsula and Archipelago Artists of Zamboanga.
Both exhibits opened last October 9 and will run until Oct. 30. They are part of the Fiesta Hermosa 2007 celebration.
Lobregat commended the local artists for their contributions who, he said, are sharing their God-given talents to Zamboanguenos.
He thanked them for keeping arts and culture alive in Zamboanga, making the city a center of arts, culture and history.
Last Oct. 1, Mayor Lobregat also spearheaded the opening of "Sombra," another exhibit featuring the works of budding artists in the city.
"There is so much going on for us in Zamboanga City. Let us realize our rich history and culture, and let us be proud of it," he stressed.
Zamboanga, he said, is branded as Asia’s Latin City because of its interestingly unique and rich history and culture.

If you are a Spanish or Latin American expatriate or tourist in the Philippines, there’s one place you should by all means visit. I refer to Zamboanga City where you need not bother speaking English. You may conveniently talk your own Spanish language because the Zamboangueños speak a Spanish-based language called Chabacano.
Mayor Celso L. Lobregat of Zamboanga City has been distributing copies of a Chabacano de Zamboanga handbook and dictionary written by Bernardo Camins. He has also encouraged the flourishing of literature in this language. He has circulated CDs containing folk songs in Chabacano. “I want Chabacano to live on in the succeeding generation of Zamboangueños. It is a priceless legacy which we must never lose,” Lobregat told this writer during a recent interview in his office in Zamboanga City. “Linguists say Chabacano is 60 percent Spanish and 40 percent indigenous,” the mayor added.
Dr. Anicia del Corro, a linguistics scholar of international repute, says that Chabacano is a language, not a dialect. “Chabacano is a creole language, meaning to say it is the offshoot of two different languages belonging to two different [linguistic] families.” To specify, Chabacano has its roots in Malay, which is Oriental and Castilian, which is European.

Mayor Celso Lobregat personally handed over the trophy and cash award to the representative of the Tropical Meat Haus, adjudged as the best slaughterhouse and the Zamboanga Agri Ventures Inc. Poultry Dressing Plant as the best poultry dressing plant during rites held at the City Health Office conference Oct. 15.
City Veterinarian Mario Ariola, whose office initiated the Search, assisted the mayor during the awarding ceremony that coincided with the opening program of the Meat Safety Consciousness Week (October 15-19).
The search is an offshoot of Mayor Lobregat’s directive to the City Veterinarian to reactivate the Task Force charged to inspect private slaughterhouses and flea markets operating in the city.
The reactivation of the team is to ensure that all private facilities are complying with the health and safety requirements provided in the Ordinance.
“But while there are incentives, there are also punishments”, the mayor stressed. Last year, the mayor ordered the suspension of operation of 13 private slaughterhouses for performing below standards.
At present, 18 private slaughterhouses are operating, out of the total 31 franchises granted by the city.
Meanwhile, the evaluation team that conducted the Search for best private slaughterhouse and poultry dressing plant in the city was composed of representatives from the National Meat Inspection Service, Office of the City Health and the City Environment and Natural Resources Office with Dr. Judith Didal as team head.

Ex!lE October 20th, 2007, 04:05 AM DoT: Asia’s Latin City branding reflects Zamboanga’s culture
(http://http://www.mb.com.ph/PROV20071020106319.html)
By VIC P. AREVALO
ZAMBOANGA CITY — A seven-woman team commissioned by the Department of Tourism in Manila to evaluate the tourism potentials of Zamboanga said the Asia’s Latin City branding is most appropriate as it reflects the residents’ character.
"I think it is excellent and it stands out,’’ Yvonne Yupangco-Pascual, general manager and president of the Asian Travel and Tours Inc. said after a three-day tour of the city.
Pascual said no other city in the country and Asia can claim that it is a Latin City than Zamboanga mainly because of the language spoken as well as its colorful and rich culture.
"The dances and the culture all bland with the Asia’s Latin City,’’ she stressed as she encouraged Mayor Celso L. Lobregat to continue building up on the brand to be able to best promote Zamboanga City.
Pascual along with five other tour operators and a DOT representative were tasked by tourism Secretary Ace Durano to visit Zamboanga City and determine if the city deserves to be included in the itinerary of inbound tourists.
Catherine de Mendoza, general manager of Cosmopolitan Travel and Tours, said the group was elated to find out that Mayor Lobregat has launched the Asia’s Latin City branding, saying it will make the campaign easy to sell.
"With us in the Philippine Tour Operators Association (PHILTOA), our advocacy is to keep discovering new destinations and so we are happy when we heard about the new branding,’’ Mendoza said.
She said the title clearly speaks for itself, giving Zamboanga its own identity. "Basically people would understand that the inhabitants of Zamboanga understand and can talk Spanish.’’
"We congratulate you for a good branding the tour operator said.
Erlinda Tan Kwok, general manager of the Island Travel and Tours went further by saying that Zamboanga is not only Asia’s Latin City but a symbol of peace. "For the last three days when we were here everything was so peaceful.’’
The group she said is also amazed by the blending of the Muslim and Christian communities specifically in the villages of Taluksangay, Maasin and other coastal areas in the west coast.
Meantime, Maria Rica Bueno, DOT Chief Tourism Operation Officer and head of the Team Asia-Pacific, urged Lobregat to promote Zamboanga songs and dances.
"By hearing the Chabacano songs and seeing the dances, visitors would arrive and they would feel the Latin City atmosphere,’’ she said.
The other members of the group were Lida Traola of the Aim High International Travel and Tours and Jolina de Guzman, general manager of Tropicana Paradiso Tours and Travel Ltd. Inc.

windlady October 26th, 2007, 11:40 AM Gaisano eyes investment in Zambo
Thursday, October 25, 2007
THE owner of the Gaisano Malls, one of the largest chains of stores in the country, has expressed intentions to invest in Zamboanga citing the numerous potentials of the city now dubbed Asia’s Latin City.
“I want to invest in Zamboanga and I wish we can do it fast,” Eddie Gaisano told Mayor Celso Lobregat during a courtesy call at City Hall over the weekend.
Gaisano assured that his business venture in Zamboanga would be different from other investments in terms of cost of products.
“The only thing I can promise Mayor Lobregat and the City Council is that when I come in, it will be a different ballgame. The prices will be cheaper,” said Gaisano.
He expressed willingness to invest in Zamboanga as soon as possible.
He emphasized that Zamboanga City is one of the key cities where his company intends to put in investments primarily due to continuing growth of the Zamboanga economy and the continuing support of the local government.
Because of the city’s potentials, Gaisano declared that Zamboanga, Asia’s Latin City, is one of the top cities that attract investments in the country.
Gaisano presented Mayor Lobregat with a publication, the Oxford Magazine, a reading material catering to the business sector globally, where he was featured and to be featured in the next 10 issues.
In his future interviews, the business tycoon promised to include Zamboanga as one of the cities to be introduced in the world market.
In return, Lobregat presented Gaisano with a miniature gong, as a token of appreciation for his visit to Zamboanga.
The businessman’s courtesy call was done at the time when the committee tasked to prepare for the Zamboanga’s presentation to the 6th Mindanao Information Communication and Technology (MICT) Congress and 1st BIMP-Eaga Business conference was finalizing plans for the confab.
Gaisano witnessed the presentation and was impressed with the city’s ICT roadmap. (Sheila E. Covarrubias)

Zamboanga City emerging as RP finance hub in south

By VIC P. AREVALO
ZAMBOANGA CITY – Top executives of the Philippine National Bank (PNB) based in Manila have recognized the potentials of Zamboanga as a business and financial center in the entire Zamboanga Peninsula as the bank also assured continuing efficient service to local residents.
PNB President and Chief executive Officer (CEO) Omar Bayron Mior, along with other PNB officers, visited Zamboanga, Asia’s Latin City, on Tuesday and met with prospective clientele and stakeholders who would avail themselves of the bank’s credit facilities.
The group also assessed the feasibility of setting up a regional cerdit center in the city to boost its growth and development potentials.
Mier’s party included PNB executive vice president Ronato Castillo, first vice president Lizette Racela 2nd Nicardo Leopoldo; senior vice president Aida Padilla, San Blesilda Abella and administrative assistant officer Joseph Hulguin.
The group visited Barangay Ayala in the West Coast to look into the possibility of establishing a PNB branch to cater to the thousand of employees working in the over 30 canning factories located in the barangay and neighboring villages.
Mier, who paid a courtesy call on Mayor Celso L. Lobregat, expressed admiration on the potentials of Ayala that makes the barangay conducive for business investments.
Mier likewise informed Mayor Lobregat on the bank’s continued commitment to serve not just the urban center but also the rural and emerging growth areas in the city.
Lobregat earlier had asked the PNB to branch out to areas outside the seven-kilometer radius of the city proper in support of his administration’s vision to develop growth areas in Zamboanga City.
The city’s vast land area provides the opportunity to develop growth areas to further reinforce the economic potentials thriving in Zamboanga, Lobregat said.
These business districts will be located in Ayala, Labuan, Sangali, Curuan and Vitali in addition to the booming central district and the Zamboanga Economic Zone and Free Port Authority in San Ramon.

BY TONY PE. RIMANDO
ZAMBOANGA City – The branding by local officials of Zamboanga as "Asia’s Latin City,’’ which has become a controversial issue here among officials and residents, will be resolved in a debate between members of the sangguniang panglungsod and the newly organized Independent Press of Zamboanga (IPZ).
The debate, to be hosted by the local chapter of the University of the Philippines Alumni Association (UPAA) and slated in early November at the Ateneo de Zamboanga gymnasium, will have as its main protagonists Climaco Elago and a team of IPZ officers led by its secretary-general Mohammadnur "Nung’’ Ajibil.
Elago’s group will take the affirmative side while Ajibil’s team will support the negative side, UPAA spokesperson Robert Albrateh said, adding that the association is now working on the mechanism of the debate, considered the first of its kind in Zamboanga Peninsula.
The controversy erupted when the IPZ, headed by retired university professor Emmanuel Mangubat, who is also a local newspaper columnist, questioned city Mayor Celso Lobregat’s premature pronouncement during the last Mindanao Business Conference here that Zamboanga now carries the new moniker of "Asia’s Latin City’’ even before the city council could officially take legislative cognizance of the new name.
Ajihil said the IPZ had noted that the council, through a resolution authored by Elago, took official action on the new moniker only after the "Uncalled for pronouncement thus putting the horse before the cart.’’
IPZ founder Clemencio Basser, also a former university executive, claimed that using Chabacano (Zamboanga’s dialect) as a major justification for the city’s new name is biased, erroneous and mythical because Chabacano is neither Latin nor Spanish and does not follow rules of grammar. (note: the latin/spanish lexical make up of chabacano is enough to qualify it as "latin or spanish based", imo)
According to Elago, the debate primarily seeks to clarify the burning Latin City branding conflict "so that local residents – who include Muslims, Visayas, Subanons and Luzonians – "will be fully enlightened on both sides of the controversy.’’
Albretch said the UPAA expects a jampacked crowd in the debate which will be moderated by a competent association member who is well versed in the history of Western Mindanao’s highly urbanized city.
He added the association will not declare a winner in the verbal derby leaving it to the Zamboanguenos to ultimately agree or disagree to the new tag of their community, once known as the City of Flowers.

ZAMBOANGA CITY—Ranking officials from the Philippine National Bank (PNB) central office in Manila have recognized the potentials of this city as a business and financial center in the entire Zamboanga Peninsula as they assured continuous and efficient service to local residents.
PNB president and chief executive officer (CEO) Omar Bayron Mier visited Zamboanga on Tuesday and met with clients and qualified investors of the bank’s credit facilities.
The group also assessed the feasibility of setting up a regional credit center in this city, a facility that will further boost the city’s capacity for development and growth.
Mier’s party included PNB executive vice president Renato Castillo; first vice presidents Lizette Racela and Nicardo Leopoldo; senior vice president Aida Padilla; Sam Blesilda Abella; and administrative assistant officer Joseph Hulguin.

AUB is coming to town

Progress. This is what is happening in our city today, the reason why Asia United Bank is coming here. This is what I learned from Jeanette Mendoza, a classmate of my son Vincent Paul.
Jeanette said AUB will open on November, but as to the exact date, I didn’t ask her. However she’s busy informing people about AUB, a domestic commercial bank, a venture between a consortium of reputable and successful Filipino industrialists and Taiwanese investment banks whose commitment is to deliver superior and efficient financial services to the local community as well as the business sector.
Name it, they have it all for business banking products and services such as: Short term working capital loans, long term loans, trade financing facilities, domestic bills purchase line, foreign bills purchase line, specialized loan/financing packages & preferred salary loans.

Fair prices at Plaza Fair
October 30,2007
MOTHERS browsing for dresses, children looking for toys. Everybody who is in a buying mood is almost everywhere, wanting to have a hold of the on-sale items… These scenes are a normal sight inside Plaza Fair Cagayan de Oro, the one-stop-shop store known for its fair price.
For 15 years, Plaza Fair has never failed to attract shoppers, young and old alike. Much more now that the Christmas season is up in the air.
Post comments here on President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo's grant of pardon to former President Joseph Estrada.
Plaza Fair bigwig Danny Velasco proudly says Plaza Fair has maintained its No. 1 position in Cagayan de Oro.
"We know Cagayan de Oro customers, their needs and wants," Mr. Velasco says, who is in the city to personally market the store's Christmas and Halloween promotional activities.
He says Cagayan de Oro has a special spot in his heart, owing to the magnificent aura of the Macajalar Bay and the rolling terrain in Barangay Bulua, which he says he felt in love with.
As Mr. Velasco feels in love with Cagayan de Oro, Plaza Fair also wants to give its share by offering sale items at lower prices, true to the byword that the store has been known for - Fair Price.
Customers can avail of select items in a buy-one-take-one scheme at Plaza Fair's department store and wet market.
What's more, shoes fanatics can get the chance to buy new styles as Mr. Velasco says at least 45 styles of ladies shoes are up for display every week.
"Who doesn't want shoes? Everybody loves shoes, including former First Lady Imelda Marcos," he says.
Plaza Fair has been in Cagayan de Oro for 15 years. And until now, it continues to serve its customers with utmost dedication, along with the other Plaza Fair branches in Manila, Baguio, Angono, Cubao and Makati. In January 2008, two more branches will be open in Zamboanga City and Butuan City.
Mr. Velasco says every store has its own niché and specialty, just like Plaza Fair. But one edge Plaza Fair has that its competitors don't have is "fair price" that ordinary Juan dela Cruz could really afford.
"The market is big for everybody and customers have their own taste. But what we all want is to value every money the customers would spend," Mr. Velasco explains.
With almost all items available at lower prices, customers would surely continue to flock to Plaza Fair Cagayan de Oro and experience hassle-free and convenient shopping, especially this Yuletide Season. (Press release)

Harry stuns US pug, gains semis
By Dennis U. Eroa
Inquirer
Last updated 02:53am (Mla time) 11/03/2007
CHICAGO, Illinois--Light-flyweight Harry Tañamor whipped up a storm as he stunned American wonder Luis Yanez, 17-7, to barge into the International Amateur Boxing Association World Boxing Championships semifinals Thursday at the University of Illinois-Chicago Pavilion here.
The shocker of a win assured Tañamor, the remaining member of the original seven-man RP-PLDT-Smart boxing team still in contention, of the bronze medal in this biennial slugfest serving as a qualifying tournament for the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
Tañamor, an Army sergeant, also won the bronze medals during the 2001 and 2003 World Championships held in Belfast, Ireland, and Bangkok, Thailand, respectively.
But his victory over the 19-year-old ace from Duncanville, Texas was the sweetest in a career that already included stints in the Olympics, Southeast Asian Games and the Asian Games.
"This is a night to remember," said Tañamor. "I'll never forget this one."
Tañamor, who is the most senior member of the national team at 29, added that he was motivated by his desire to avenge the setback suffered by close friend and roommate Violito Payla at the hands of Rau'shee Warren during the round of 16 last Wednesday.
To make the gold-medal match, Tañamor, a native of Zamboanga City, must hurdle Thai sensation Anmat Ruenroeng in the semifinals slated Friday evening. Ruenroeng, who took over the mantle by veteran and long-time Tañamor rival Suban Pannon, trashed Armenian Danielyan Hovhannes, 18-6, in another quarterfinal showdown.
Using his speed and movement, Tañamor came out on fire against Yanez, the reigning Pan American Games titlist. The Filipino pug piled up points with body blows against the startled Yanez to take a commanding 12-5 lead halfway through the bout witnessed by a sizeable crowd which included a spirited group of Filipinos.
Slick and perfect with his timing, Tañamor opened a huge, 15-5 lead in the third round as Yanez became desperate.
"When I went ahead, I knew that Yanez would have trouble finding his rhythm and by the end of the second round, I was in total control of the match," said Tañamor, who dedicated his victory to boxing godfather Manny V. Pangilinan, chair of PLDT-Smart.
Egged on by the crowd, Yanez tried to pin down Tañamor, but the Filipino skirted around the ring to preserve the victory.
"Harry boxed perfectly. He had the experience and the skills to neutralize Yanez," said head coach Patricio Gaspi. Gaspi noted that Tañamor's hit and run tactic prevented Yanez from doing much damage.
But even with the loss, Yanez had already booked a slot to Beijing by virtue of making it this far in the tournament. He joins Tañamor, Ruenroeng, Hovhannes and four other boxers to the Olympics. Others who qualified in light-flyweight class are Ukraine's Georgiy Chygayev, France's Nordine Oubaali, Ireland's Patrick Barnes and defending champion Zou Shiming.
Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippines Manny T. Lopez said the victory gave credence to the decision of the association to field Tañamor despite his age.
"I, for one, believe that Harry remains deadly as ever," Lopez said. "He is in great shape as proven by his victory. [We are] proud of Harry's achievement."
Meanwhile, the RP-PLDT-Smart team will fly to San Francisco on Sunday to compete in an invitational tournament spearheaded by Filipino-American community leaders.
Bantamweight Joan Tipon, featherweight Charly Suarez, light-welterweight Delfin Boholst, welterweight Willie Lopez and flyweight Violito Payla are expected to see action in the two-day boxing extravaganza.

GearX November 3rd, 2007, 05:11 AM TANAMOR GOES FOR GOLD
By Ronnie Nathanielsz

Veteran Olympian Harry Tanamor continued his amazing run at the World Boxing Championships with another rousing 16-8 win over Thailand’s Amnat Ruenroeng to book a place in the finals and the chance for a coveted gold medal at the University of Illinois-Chicago Pavilion in Chicago, yesterday.
Tanamor who had earlier clinched an Olympic berth when he entered the quarter finals by the narrowest of margins stamped his class with a 17-7 thrashing of fancied American Luis Yanez before overpowering the tough Amnat who had earlier scored a lopsided 18-6 win over Hovhannes Danelyan of Armenia.
Tanamor started off cautiously against his Thai opponent and was down 0-2 at the end of the first round but he went on the offensive in the second to turn things around and grabbed a slim 5-4 lead halfway through the bout. Cheered on by a group of Filipinos, the 30 year old Tanamor proved his class in the third round when he caught Amnat with some clean shots to surge further ahead 11-6 before establishing his superiority with a 5-2 margin in the final round for an impressive 16-8 triumph. Yanez said he “didn’t expect him (Tanamor) to come out there like that.” When told by his corner that he was down by five points at the end of round one Yanez said he didn’t feel he was down by that much, adding “I guess the judges saw some things differently than what I saw in there.”
Amnat who is fighting in his first major international tournament after replacing Thai veteran Suban Pannom is a former prisoner who has made tremendous progress since he first represented Thailand in the King’s Cup earlier this year where he defeated Asian Games champion Zou Shi Ming of China who was a bronze medalist in the 2004 Athens Olympics.
Tanamor clinched his third successive trip to the Olympics with a tiebreaker win in the quarter finals where his aggressiveness in the final round earned him the nod of the judges. Tanamor represented the Philippines at both the 2000 Sydney and 2004 Athens Olympic Games where he was picked by the prestigious Sports Illustrated magazine to enter the medal round but failed, losing to South Korea’s Hong Moo Won in the round of sixteen.
A two-time bronze medal winner at the World Championships in Ireland in 2001 and Thailand in 2003, Tanamor who was dropped from the Doha Asian Games squad in 2004 for disciplinary reasons will face a formidable foe in China’s Zou Shiming who hammered France’s Nordine Oubaali forcing a stoppage at 1:16 of the third round with the Chinese star ahead 21-1.
Zou won the gold medal at the 2005 World Championships and the bronze medal at the 2004 Athens Olympic Games where Tanamor was eliminated in the round of 32.
Prior to his bout with Amnat, the Thai said “I have nothing to lose against Tanamor. He is the Doha Asian Games champion but he holds no fear for me despite his impressive resume.”
Earlier, American Yanez who lost to Tanamor in the quarter finals lamented that he “ got caught with shots I shouldn’t have got caught with” although the US coaches conceded that the flashy Filipino made it difficult for Yanez to connect with his ability to block punches and stay out of trouble.

GearX November 5th, 2007, 06:19 AM Tañamor hurts hand, settles for silver
http://i185.photobucket.com/albums/x287/GearX_2007/another/tana.gif
CHICAGO, Illinois " Light-flyweight Harry Tañamor bowed to marvelous Zou Shiming of China, 3-16, to settle for the silver medal Saturday in the International Amateur Boxing Association World Boxing Championships at the University of Illinois-Chicago Pavilion here.
Tañamor, a member of the RP-PLDT Smart boxing team, hurt his left hand while parrying Shiming’s 1-2 combinations early in the round and spent the bout playing catch-up.
“My hand hurts terribly whenever I threw punches. I also failed to defend solidly because of this,” Tanamor said.“But I’m not going to make sulk. Yes, Shiming won.”
Tanamor swarmed all over his foe. But the Chinese dynamo proved elusive with his smooth footwork.
“He run, run and run. I tried to corner him, but he was just simply an elusive target,” said Tanamor, the first Filipino boxer to win a slot in the Beijing Olympics.
It was clear that Shiming’s ploy was to make Tanamor play catch-up. Afraid of Tanamor’s lethal body punches, Shiming elected to put a distance and was happy to throw the occasional combinations whenever his foe came charging like a bull.
Frustrated with the lack of action, the overflowing crowd booed both fighters, forcing the referee to instruct them to fight.
The match was also not lacking in controversry. TV replays showed that Tanamor should have scored the first point with a thunderous left straight to Shiming’s face, but the judges saw otherwise. Shiming went ahead, 6-1 at the end of the first round and made it 7-1 despite punching with an open glove early in the second round.
“I’m amazed but not surprised. The scoring was simply unbelievable,” said Dennis Rappaport, an American boxing promoter who is also the manager of reigning WBC heavyweight titlist Oleg Maskaev of Russia.
Dickie Wood, an American trainer in the audience, also expressed his frustration on the scoring. “The Filipino boxer should have been credited with points. I think the judges were very biased.”
Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippines (ABAP) president Manny T. Lopez said the silver-medal finish is a worthy finish for the RP Pldt-Smart boxing team.
“Tanamor’s silver glitters like gold. This silver will inspire us going to the Olympics,” said Lopez, who added that the quality of the tournament improved dramatically over the years. “We lost our first three bouts here but bounced back mightily. Violito (Payla) and Genebert (Basadre) came to within whisker of gaining slots in the Olympics. We learned our lessons here.
Arturo Vidal, head of the delegation, said the silver-medal finish is a big relief for the Philippine team. “We can compete with the best,” said Vidal.
Lopez also said that the Philippines is looking forward to competing in the next Asian Olympic qualifying slated January in Bangkok, Thailand .
“We’re seeking more berths. ABAP hopes to send six boxers to Beijing ,” said Lopez. Kazakshtan will host the third and final Olympic qualifying for Asian countries.

as wat i saw in the previous months, they have realy intensified the campaigns to regain the cultural grandeur that Zamboanga has once owned..first with the branding of Zamboanga as Asia's Latin City, juz to make it appear to the rest of the globe that indeed, Spanish heritage in Zamboanga was been built in a solid foundation. Second, during the celebration of Fiesta Hermosa(Feast of La Virgen del Pilar) all the competition is intertwined with the idea of the preservation of the Spanish heritage of Zamboanga..

and regarding Chavacano:
I think they are using it now for those dance hits being promoted by ASAP of ABSCBN like Dulce Tira-Tira and Derecha Izquierda.
