ADZU double celebration: 150 Years of the Return of the Jesuits and 100 years of the University’s founding
ADZU Press Release

Ateneo de Zamboanga University is marking two significant milestones this year: the 150th anniversary of the return of the Jesuits to the country and the start the celebrations leading to the university’s 100th founding anniversary in 2012.

On July 3, the Ateneo community will gather to mark the twin celebration with a mass at 10 am at the Multi-Purpose Covered Courts.
The celebration is billed “En la Compañia de los Jesuitas: Re-Living Memories, Continuing Legacies”.

In the afternoon of the same day, noted historian Fr. Jose S. Arcilla, SJ will give a public lecture on the Jesuits return to Mindanao and the Beginnings of Ateneo de Zamboanga. The lecture will be held at the Carlos Dominguez Conference Hall at 2:30 pm.

Immediately after the lecture, an exhibit on “The Jesuits in Mindanao since their Return” and “The Ateneo de Zamboanga in Retrospect” will open later on the same day.

The first Jesuits actually arrived in the country almost 500 years ago. While they were primarily missionaries, even then, as now, they were already deeply involved in the education of Filipinos.

However, in the eighteenth century, the Society of Jesus fell out of favor with colonial powers and Catholic royalties. They were expelled from their areas, including the Philippines.

After decades of persecution and suppression, the Jesuit congregation was reinstated. On June 13, 1859, almost a hundred years after they were expelled from the country, ten Jesuits arrived in the Philippines, mainly to do missionary work in Mindanao and Jolo.

The Oldest Jesuit University in Mindanao goes 100th by 2012...:banana:

Our airport badly needs rehabilitation. The washrooms are smelly, chairs a bit delapidated and oh the carousel – horrible! I always tought bacolod city had the worst airport not until late last year…zamboanga is pretty much behind and airports should always give travelers a good impression on the citys progress.

Somehow Mura namn ang PIzza ng Pizza Hut but i more preferred to Greenwich pizza....

my tita was so happy when we were there since we didn't see for almost 7 years or more...but was shucked lng talaga when i saw the improvement of a 2 small town near in Tarlac city..Trully my compyansa talaga ang mayor nila to improve their town and soon to become a new city....

the different between ILOCANO and CHAVACANO is...

ang mga ilocano they work hard and double their time parang chinese -dapat kayud para pasok swerte- while here working hard para makatawid sa pagaraw araw or sa chavacano pa "pwede ya se"....we're lucky may airport tau and take note international pa but medyo may katandaan ngalang while they are hoping to have kasi namn ang hirap bumyahe from there to pasay...6 to 7 hours sa bus then 2 and half hours via plane going back to zambo. hu hu hu

Our airport badly needs rehabilitation. The washrooms are smelly, chairs a bit delapidated and oh the carousel – horrible! I always tought bacolod city had the worst airport not until late last year…zamboanga is pretty much behind and airports should always give travelers a good impression on the citys progress.

i don't satisfied with a small improvement of the airport imagine worth of 210Million pesos for the renovation and concreting of the runway parang CR lang ata ang nakita kung okay and ung thermal scanner what about others?...sana namn gawin glass nalang ung front abd sa likod then may aircon na sa loob...

;39015938']^^ diba dati stainless steel signage yan na nakalagay eh Zamboanga international airport? what happened?

i thought nga na papalitan na nila ung name after the late mayor. Ma. Clara L. Lobregat ung present airport name...un pala paint ang ipinapalit nila lol..

AMERICA Live In Zambo tickets now available

Tickets for the AMERICA live in Zamboanga are now available!
Since last week, reservations were made by fans of America, but the special thermal tickets printed exclusively by Ticketline in Manila arrived yesterday.
This information was relayed by Jovy Ilagan, production and project coordinator of Mayo Cinco promotions to Zamboanga Today. The paper is co-presentor of the most anticipated concert in Western Mindanao.
Ilagan said the America Live in Zamboanga will take place on August 4, 2009 at the Summit Centre at 7:00 in the evening.
Ilagan informed that this week is calendared as the promotional ad campaign of the said show in the western Mindanao.
“We have been receiving inquiries and ticket reservations from as far as Dapitan and Pagadian. We are just setting up the Zamboanga outlets which is initially will be at the puericulture center because its in the heart of the city”. Ilagan said.
Ilagan said, within the week some malls in the city will also be made as ticket outlets of the concert.
Meanwhile, Mayo Cinco Promotions said that tickets printed by Ticketline in Manila cannot be duplicated since the tickets are made using imported and highly non-fraud materials.
For tickets reservation call Jovy Ilagan at 9281428 or at 9915088.

Indian firm to invest in Basic's cassava plantation project

MANILA, Philippines - An Indian company supplying clean technology committed to invest up to half a million dollars in the cassava plantation project of Basic Ecomarket Farms Inc. in Zamboanga.

The partnership between Trio-Chem Group of Companies and Basic Energy Corp. is expected to establish an integrated feedstock farm, a bio-ethanol plant, and related facilities in the Philippines, Basic’s compliance officer Angel P. Gahol said.

Basic Ecomarket Farms is a joint venture between Basic Energy and Ecomarket Farms Inc. engaged in cassava development and production.

In August last year, Basic Energy decided to switch to cassava as preferred feedstock for the planned ethanol plant project.

For its part, Basic Ecomarket Farms targets to cover 300 hectares of managed farms for 2009.

This will be increased to 2,000 hectares by 2013.

Basic Ecomarket Farms’ operations are focused on the Zamboanga peninsula.

Basic Energy plans to continue enhancing its biofuel production capacities and its entry into renewable and alternative forms of energy while maintaining its various interests in oil and gas exploration. - Ruby Anne M. Rubio, GMANews.TV

3 airport upgrade projects near completion

MINDANAO Economic Development Council (Medco) chairman Undersecretary Virgilio Leyretana announced Wednesday that the P1.28-billion upgrade projects of three airports in Zamboanga Peninsula are nearing completion.

Leyretana said these are the airports in the cities of Dipolog, Pagadian, and Zamboanga that were identified as priority projects under the Mindanao Super Region.

He said the P379.46 million Pagadian City airport development projects would be completed by December this year.

The project components, he said, include the extension of runway and apron, rehabilitation of terminal building, construction of administration and powerhouse buildings, perimeter fence, and air navigational facilities.

He said the upgrading of the P478.05-million Dipolog airport, which involves asphalt overlay of runway and extension, shore protection, rehabilitation of terminal and fire station buildings, as well as air navigational facilities, is also underway.

Leyretana added that the P428.5-million Zamboanga Airport development project components are also targeted to be completed by the end of this year:speech::speech:, with the continuation of asphalt overlay of runway, rehabilitation of existing terminal building, and air navigational facilities.

He said the connectivity between the three cities with the rest of the country will be improved once the upgrading of the airports will be completed.

It will lead to more economic activities and generate employment and business opportunities for Mindanao, Leyretana said.

He added the airport development projects are being implemented by the Department of Transportation and Communication (DOTC), in close coordination with the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (Caap) under the Super Region development strategy. (Bong Garcia)

He also said the rehabilitation and construction of airport facilities will contribute to the safe and efficient airport operations, as well as ensure safer and smoother landings.

He added the airport development projects are being implemented by the Department of Transportation and Communication (DOTC), in close coordination with the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (Caap) under the Super Region development strategy. (Bong Garcia)

Zamboanga confirms first H1N1 case

ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines—Authorities confirmed the first case of Influenza A (H1N1) here Thursday morning but officials at the 9-year-old boy's school said they were not suspending classes yet.

Aristides Tan, Western Mindanao health chief, said the boy probably got the disease when he and his parents visited a relative in Manila who was infected with the virus late last month.

"Yes we have a confirmed case. He is now recovering," he said.

Tan said contact tracing had been started.

Ateneo De Zamboanga president Father Antonio Moreno said the school will wait for the advice of the Department of Health before deciding about suspending classes.

The boy was the fourth confirmed H1N1 case in Mindanao since last month.

Earlier, health officials in Caraga confirmed that a boy, who vacationed with his parents in Hong Kong, became the first victim.

A girl who had contact with the boy also became ill.

Then in Kidapawan City, officials confirmed that a 37-year-old woman who fetched her husband from Manila also caught the virus.

I regret to inform our community that yesterday the local DOH officials confirmed the first case of A(H1N1) in Zamboanga City. The patient, one of our Grade School students, was ill since 22 June, but has complied with DOH requirements of anti-viral treatment and home quarantine.

Joefel calls on DPWH to fast track work

Councilor Joefel Delas Peñas yesterday appealed to the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) District Engineer Merham Acas to fast track the concreting and rehabilitation of the different national roads to help ease out traffic in the different thoroughfares.

This, after many residents of the city has aired their grievances and complaints over the radio and television with regards to the heavy traffic being experienced in many city streets especially during peak hours.
Delas Peñas said that the simultaneous repair of the roads by the DPWH along Camins, Sta. Cruz and Tetuan has caused long and monstrous traffic jams in many intersections.
“Of course we also understand the work being undertaken by the DPWH to rehabilitate and widen our national roads, but they should have done it in one area at a time because we don’t have many alternate routes,” Delas Peñas pointed out.
Residents have been complaining about the pestering heavy traffic which has caused their delay in going to work and bringing their children to schools.
Many tricycle drivers are taking advantage of the situation by asking their passengers to pay double because of added fuel cost.
Earlier, the City Council have summoned Acas to answer similar complaints about the rehabilitation work his office is undertaking in many national roads.
Acas said that the fund has been appropriated by the national government for the repair of the national roads and he has to abide by it, if not, the national government will revert the money and probably will give it to other Local Government Units who are interested to use the funds for projects.
The district engineer appealed to residents to bear with them because in the end the people will benefit from the projects. (Nonong Santiago)

Airport upgrade projects in Western Mindanao speed up

http://www.medco.gov.ph/medcoweb/images/photo/2009/June/ZamboangaAirport.png
ZAMBOANGA AIRPORT REHAB The Php428.5-million Zamboanga Airport development project includes runway improvement, rehabilitation of airport buildings and facilities is targeted to be completed by the end of the year, along with the upgrading of Dipolog and Pagadian airports. The airport upgrading projects are part of the Mindanao Super Region development strategy which provides critical infrastructure support in harnessing Mindanao’s agri-industrial potential.

PAGADIAN CITY --- Priority airport projects in Western Mindanao that are intended for greater connectivity in the region are picking up pace as they are seen to be completed by yearend.

Data from the Regional Infrastructure Monitoring Report of the Mindanao Economic Development Council (MEDCo) specifically showed that three airport upgrade projects under the Mindanao Super Region (MSR) will be nearing completion.

The Php 379.46-million Pagadian Airport development project involves the upgrading and rehabilitation of airport facilities like the runway, taxiway and airport buildings.

Expected to be completed by December this year are the project components on extension of runway and apron, rehabilitation of terminal building, construction of administration and powerhouse buildings, perimeter fence and air navigational facilities.

Upgrading of the Php478.05-million Dipolog airport, which involves asphalt overlay of runway and extension, shore protection, rehabilitation of terminal and fire station buildings as wells as air navigational facilities, is also underway.

Meanwhile, the Php428.5-million Zamboanga Airport development project components are also targeted to be completed by the end of the year with the continuation of asphalt overlay of runway, rehabilitation of existing terminal building and air navigational facilities.

“By fast tracking the upgrading of our airports, we would be able to improve our connectivity with the rest of the country. This would lead to more economic activities and generate employment and business opportunities for Mindanao," said Undersecretary Virgilio Leyretana,Sr. MEDCo Chair and Mindanao Super Region Deputy Development Champion.

He added that the rehabilitation and construction of airport facilities will contribute to the safe and efficient airport operations as well as ensure safer and smoother landings.

The airport development projects are being implemented by the Department of Transportation and Communication (DOTC) in close coordination of the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) under the Super Region development strategy.

To date, eight projects have been completed from the 35 infra projects identified under the MSR.

These include the 210 MW Mindanao Coal-fired Power Plant also located here, the 950 KV Photovoltaic Power Plant in Cagayan de Oro, the Diosdado Macapagal Bridge in Butuan City, the Manay- Mati Road Section of the Surigao-Davao Coastal Road, the port development projects in Davao City, Camiguin and Cagayan de Oro City, as well as the upgrading of provincial and district hospitals.

Recently, the flood control component of the Lower Agusan Development Project has also been completed and included in the MSR roster.

Meanwhile, 2,123 projects are still ongoing. These include roads and bridges, airports, agri-support projects, power and energy, and health projects. The rest still have to be funded to physically integrate Mindanao and optimize its potential as an Agri-Fishery Export Zone in the South.

Budgetary aid for farm-to-market roads and irrigation facilities is also being pushed.

The MEDCo heads the MSR Inter-agency group which is tasked to consolidate the updates of the various Mindanao Super Region projects and lobby for the fast-tracking of these projects.

Under the Super Region strategy, Mindanao's strong potential to become the country's agribusiness center is being developed and harnessed through major infrastructure support.

PGMA urges Zambo business leaders to explore “Halal” food market potentials
ZAMBOANGA CITY (PND) -- Are there prospects for the bottled sardines industry here to penetrate the huge and lucrative Arab consumer export market and cash in on it?

Western Mindanao produces bottled sardine preparations that are decidedly delicious and could easily rival their Spanish sardines counterpart. The local versions are just as chilli hot and gustatorilly enticing.

Local sardines industry players, however, complain they could not make headway in seeking “halal” certification for their products that would enable them to penetrate the lucrative Arab consumer market because of stringent Halal certification requirements.

President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo who visited here today, Friday (May 29) urged Zamboanga sardines industry players “to go where the market leads them or find alternative markets.”

The President explained that “Halal” certification is actually a non-government function and the buying countries or markets themselves are the “Halal certifying agencies.”

“Halal,” is an Arabic term for food and non-food items that are deemed “lawful or permissible.” As a rule, Muslims prefer “Halal” products, particularly food items, which are certified to be high quality, hygienic & healthy.

For products to penetrate the Arab consumer market, they must be Halal-certified.

The help ingrained “Halal” into the Filipino Muslim culture and for the country to benefit from the “Halal” product market, Malacanang has issued Executive Order 122-A which provides the legal framework for the Office of Muslim Affairs (OMA) to extend assistance in matters concerning Muslim issues such as Halal.

The government’s Halal Program seeks to extend technical assistance concerning Halal certification and promotion activities, and ensure that food products intended for the Muslim market conform with Islamic dietary principles and are made easily accessible to Muslim consumers.

Recognizing the need for a strong and credible Philippine Halal system and certification, OMA has geared its efforts towards the establishment of an institutionalized Halal certification scheme that would be universally recognized.

Toward this end, the President has issued Memorandum Order 201 directing the Departments of Trade and Industry (DTI), Agriculture (DA), Health (DoH), Science and Technology (DOST), Tourism (DOT) and OMA -- to coordinate their efforts related to Halal and ensure the effective implementation of the Halal Export Trade Development Program.

Their efforts led to the promulgation of a national standard for halal certification which now guides private “halal” certifying agencies in issuing certifications.

President Arroyo urged local sardines industry players in Zamboanga to work things out with private Halal-certifying agencies based in Western Mindanao, including Zamboanga City.

Limpapa fisherfolks receive "Ayuda de Presidente Gloria" (http://www.pia.gov.ph/?m=12&fi=p090701.htm&no=14&r=r09&y=&mo=)

By Dave Malcampo

Zamboanga City (July 1) -- The 42 member-beneficiaries of the Limpapa Subanen Fishing Organization have so much to rejoice Monday with the release by the Regional Office of the Department of Labor and Employment the amount of P140,000 for their training cum-production on cooperative fishing.

The fisherfolks received the second livelihood assistance package from DOLE-IX during the outreach program conducted by the Regional KALAHI Convergence Group (RKCG-IX) in barangay Limpapa, Zamboanga City, where a caravan of 30 government vehicles from various agencies converged to deliver government services.

The first tranche, also in the amount of P140,000, was released to the same group during the earlier visit of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo last May 28, 2009.

Mr. Abdulkari Jumrani, President of the Organization, was quoted in his message; "Ang tulong ng Gobyerno, ng ACORD at ng DOLE ay napakalaki sa panghanapbuhay ng mga mangingisda dito sa Limpapa, naniniwala kami sa programa ng gobyerno dahil ito'y nakarating sa amin dito na napakalayo ng barangay sa lungsod ng Zamboanga".

In the same outreach program, DOLE-IX Regional Director Ponciano M. Ligutom also released the checks to 25 grantees under the Summer Program for the Employment of Students (SPES) amounting to P32,782.25.

Other KALAHI Cluster and National Government Agencies also distributed educational science books for the elementary school; seedlings, plants, assorted medicines and vitamins to hundreds of people in the said barangay.

In his capacity as Presidential Assistant for Western Mindanao, ASec Crisanto B. dela Cruz spearheaded the outreach program, which was dubbed as "Ayuda de Presidente Gloria para na Limpapa."

Zamboanga City Mayor Celso Lobregat and 1st District Congresswoman Ma. Isabelle Climaco-Salazar graced the activity with their inspiring messages and commitments to bring-in more services in this "farthest end" barangay of the City.

There are 19 KALAHI areas in the Zamboanga Peninsula region and Barangay Limpapa is one of the identified KALAHI areas in Zamboanga City. (DOLE-9/PIA9-BST)

America, Ambrosia and John Ford Coley tour

The magnificent sound fusing classic pop, rock and folk will fill the concert scene when three of the biggest names in international music gather together in a major act showcasing the best and the brightest in popular music during the past half century.

For the first time in their long and successful careers, America, Ambrosia and John Ford Coley will share the same stage and demonstrate their distinct talents, vocal qualities and styles as they perform their greatest hits during a special concert on July 31 at the Araneta Coliseum in Cubao, Quezon City.

Billed as “America, Ambrosia & John Ford Coley Live!,” the Big Dome show to be mounted by Ovation Productions will kick off a four-night concert series that will also include performances by America at the Nueva Caceres University in Naga City on Aug. 1; Subic Convention Center, Aug. 2; and Summit Center, Zamboanga City, Aug. 4.

Following the three-in-one act, Ambrosia is scheduled to perform solo a longer set during a dinner-show at the Hard Rock Café in Makati City on Aug. 1.

America returns to the concert scene almost two years after its successful five-night tour in 2007 which was highlighted by a jampacked show at the Big Dome in its comeback bid more than two decades since its 1981 debut at the Folk Arts Theater (now Tanghalang Francisco Balagtas).

This first phase of the project consists of a 120 kilometer stretch of railway that will pass through the Cagayan de Oro-Iligan industrial corridor. Some 45 tunnels and bridges will be constructed along this phase with a total length of 25 kilometers.

From www.pnr.gov.ph, below are the segments of the MRP.

1st Segment, Phase I (Cagayan de Oro City-Iligan City)

Globe, USAID launch WiMAX for Mindanao schools
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

By Queenie Casimiro, ABS-CBN News Zamboanga | 07/06/2009 4:42 PM

Printer-friendly version | Send to friend | Post Comment

In a bid to bring internet and computer education closer to the youth in Mindanao, Globe Telecommunications has tied up with United States Agency for International Development's (USAID) Growth with Equity in Mindanao (GEM) to provide WiMax connections to six public schools in Zamboanga City.

The six are Don Pablo Lorenzo Memorial National High School, J-Jireh School, Southcom National High School, Sinunuc Elementary School, Zamboanga City High School (Main) and Sinunuc National High School.

The schools are already part of the USAID-GEM's Computer Literacy and Internet Connection (CLIC) Program, which provides schools with computers that have Internet connection.

The launching was graced by US Ambassador Kristie Kenney, who was quick to test the program and chat with students of Don Pablo Lorenzao Memorial National High School. Kenney said it is important to expose the students to the new technology and make information available to them.

"Today's launch takes Zamboanga City nearer to developing health care opportunities, opens the doors to development and other prospects. It is wonderful to see education take our young people to places," Kenney said in her speech.

Globe said WiMax's larger coverage and higher bandwidth performance allows the company to provide high-speed Internet service to previously unserviceable areas. Fifteen WiMax sites, short for Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Acess, have been established in strategic areas in Zamboanga City.Hoyle Disuanco, Head of the Globe Consumer Sales in Visayas and Mindanao said four more WiMax sites will be established by September.

Wi-Max launched in Zamboanga

ECONOMIC activity in Zamboanga Peninsula is given a boost through the expansion of Zamboanga City's information and communications technology (ICT) infrastructure, which includes the installation of a wireless-wide area network.

The installation of Globe Telecommunication's Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access (Wi-Max) in Zamboanga City, which will extend mobile broadband Internet access to subscribers in previously underserved areas, is expected to spur the development of the business process outsourcing (BPO) sector in particular.

e Wi-Max launching was spearheaded Monday by US Ambassador Kristie Kenney, who said the officials' role was to provide technical advice and linkup partnership between the stakeholders.

Kenney said they have chosen Zamboanga City as it has a great potential for growth, citing it is a large city with very diverse population.

The entry of Globe Wi-Max into Zamboanga City could jump-start the opening of call centers as envisioned by local government officials, with all the major infrastructures in place like seaport and airport.

Globe's initiative has received support from the United States Agency for International Development (USAid)-funded Growth with Equity in Mindanao (GEM) Program, which provided information on population demographics and business forecasts, and facilitated meetings between Globe and officials of the local government.

The GEM Program's initial collaboration with Globe focused on expanding telecommunications in the Sulu Archipelago a decade ago, following the signing of the peace agreement between the National Government and Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF).

Telecom firms like Globe and Smart were assisted by GEM in identifying possible cell tower locations and in partnering with local communities and businesses.

This resulted in expanding cell phone coverage in the Sulu Archipelago from 20 to 80 percent.

Philippine Call Center Alliance president Joji Ilagan-Bian said the expanded coverage provided by Wi-Max will open wide the information technology gateway for Zamboanga City.

Bian said Mindanao is the next generation ICT hub with cities like Davao, Cagayan de Oro, and Zamboanga in the center stage.

She said Mindanao's communications technology has gone to greater heights, citing there are already 749,217 installed fixed telephone lines, 33 percent of which had already been in use.

She said it translates to 247,344 fixed telephone subscribers across the island-region.

"It's continuously developing with investment inflows from foreign BPO players," she said, citing that in 2008, the BPO industry has generated US$6 billion in revenues in Mindanao.

The expanded ICT capacity provided by Globe is expected to attract additional outsourcing locators, which is an encouraging investment in the BPO sector in Mindanao under the oversight of the Mindanao Economic Development Council (Medco) since Zamboanga City is home to firms engaged in medical transcription, website and software development, animation, encoding, and data processing.

Zamboanga City has the advantage of substantial human resources and has several of the region's top universities, including Western Mindanao State University (WMSU) and Ateneo de Zamboanga University (ADZU). There are also technical and vocational colleges offering training in call center skills.

Altogether, these academic institutions turn out about 19,000 new graduates a year.

Kenney was also the guest speaker when WMSU launched Monday its new language training laboratory, which is a key component of the GEM Program's Job Enabling English Proficiency (Jeep) Project, which was designed to improve language skills needed for jobs in expanding industries requiring reasonable proficiency in English, including the BPO industry.

Zamboanga City's relatively high levels of education, coupled with the increased English fluency associated with GEM's Jeep Project, and the multiplicity of cultures and languages, including the Spanish Creole language of Chavacano, have combined to produce skilled and adaptable call center agents suitable for a wide range of markets.

Zamboanga City, whose 98 barangays have a population of over 750,000, has been identified as the southernmost link in the government's Cyber Corridor, which consists of interconnected centers of BPO services located across the country. (Bong Garcia) sunstar zamboanga

Zamboanga’s New Wireless Environment Seen to Draw in Outsourcing Investment

ZAMBOANGA CITY—Economic activity in the Zamboanga peninsula and the adjoining Sulu archipelago is being given a boost through the dramatic expansion if this city’s information and communications technology (ICT) infrastructure; an expansion that includes the installation of a wireless wide area network.

Globe Telecommunication’s WiMax (Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access) installation in Zamboanga, which will extend mobile broadband internet access to subscribers in previously unserved areas, is expected to spur the development of the business process outsourcing (BPO) sector, in particular.

Celita Calma of Nurse Care Review Center, Zamboanga’s first training center for medical transcription, encoding and data processing, says outsourcing locators can find a skilled pool of prospective agents suitable for billing and other back office transactions.

“It’s one of the best areas for BPO skills,” says Nonito Arquiza of L&M Transcript Solutions, Inc., which provides medical transcription services to U.S. clients. “National call centers have been recruiting heavily in Zamboanga.”

The city’s relatively high levels of education, coupled with and the increased English fluency associated with GEM’s JEEP Project, and the multiplicity of cultures and languages, including the Spanish Creole language of Chavacano, have combined to produce skilled and adaptable call center agents suitable for a wide range of markets.

Zamboanga, whose 98 barangays have a population of over 750,000, has been identified as the southernmost link in the government’s Cyber Corridor, which consists of interconnected centers of BPO services located along the length of the country.

“Zamboanga has wonderful resources that makes doing business easy for investors,” said Bian. GEM

TWO more people were found positive of influenza A (H1N1) virus in Zamboanga Peninsula, bringing to three the confirmed cases in the region, a health official said Friday.

Regional Epidemiology Surveillance Unit (Resu) chief Dra. Norvie Taruc said that among the new confirmed cases is a 63-year-old woman of Zamboanga City who recently arrived from Los Angeles, California.

The other one is a 53-year-old man from the province of Zamboanga del Norte who just came from Perth, Australia.

Taruc said the two were already given the appropriate medications and were placed on house quarantine.

She said the Resu received Friday afternoon the laboratory results from the Research Institute for Tropical Medicine (RITM) in Manila.

The first confirmed case of A (H1N1) in Zamboanga Peninsula was a nine-year-old pupil of the Ateneo de Zamboanga University (Adzu). He came into contact with an A (H1N1)-affected relative.

Taruc advised the public not to panic despite the increasing number of A (H1N1) cases in the region. He, however, advised the public to immediately seek medication once they experienced signs and symptoms of the virus, which include fever, colds, cough and sore throat.

She said the public must also practice basic hygiene to avoid infection of the A (H1N1) virus.

The DOH has also placed under observation three other pupils of Adzu elementary school who showed signs and symptoms of H1N1 infection, Taruc said.

She said two of the cases under observation are classmates, while the other is a schoolmate of the nine-year-old pupil who was first found positive of A (H1N1).
