Mike Enriquez’s tour of Zamboanga’s pride

Last August 1, we, together with GMA-7’s Mike Enriquez and colleague Wilson Lee Flores, went to an interesting whole day trip to Zamboanga City to have a first-hand experience of how Mega Sardines manufactures its products.

Mega Sardines, endorsed by no less than one of the country’s most important actors and industry prime movers Mr. Cesar Montano, goes by the battle cry “from catching to canning” to set it apart from the rest of its competition. It emphasizes the company’s virtue of high quality freshness of its produce that begins from catching the fish straight to the cannery right there in Zamboanga City.

Mike has been tapped by the group to endorse Mega Sardines in his radio program on DZBB and this activity was arranged to help Mike get a full grasp of the outstanding core values and world class operations that this company live by in its pursuit of global excellence.

Our group, accompanied by one of Mega Sardines’ owners Jansen Chan and Mega Sardines’ marketing guy Reggie Santos, Mark Opao of McKann-Erickson, took the Philippine Airlines 5 a.m. flight to Zamboanga. Upon arrival at the airport where Mike was easily recognized by the people, we were met by the youngest in the executives of Mega Fishing Corp., Marvin Tiu Lim and their staff. The patriarch behind the entire conglomerate Mr. William Tiu Lim, president and CEO of Mega Fishing Corp. and Ayala Seafoods Corp. was waiting for us at the hotel where we had our briefing while having breakfast.

Mr. William is very proud of his company and most specifically of Mega Sardines because he says, “we’ve been in the fishing business for a long time now and in the cannery business for only three years. Having control of our own supply of fish in making sardines ensures us and our customers that our products are of the highest quality.”

He also takes pride in the many accreditations that his product has already secured in the span of time that they have been operating. Mega Sardines has won awards and citations left and right for its outstanding quality. Aside from all of that, Mega is the only local sardines that has been certified by the European Union (EU).

“We are proud that we meet the very high standards of quality requirements and specifications set by the global market because we have our own fishing fleet to supply us with the raw materials and our own canning plant to manufacture sardines. We can guarantee the delivery of our products the whole year round. We only use fresh and selected pure and natural materials for all our products,” Mr. Tiu Lim told us. As such, they have been exporting their product not only in Asia but also in Europe, which everyone knows maintains a very high strict standard before anyone can penetrate their market.

Soon after breakfast, we proceeded to the Mega Pier in Cawit where we witnessed the state-of-the-art pumping machine they have been employing for more than a year now and which they say has greatly increased their productivity since. “This machine which we bought from the US, took us over two years to perfect the operation here. The old manual method of transferring the catch from the boat to the pier while eating so much time also compromises the quality of the catch. With this method, we are able to keep the temperature of the catch to zero level in no time, ensuring its freshness, preserving it until it gets to the cannery,” he said pointing out that Mega is the only company to use this machine. “The others try to copy our method but they can’t,” he added.

From the pier, we went to Mega’s Ice Plant in Talisayan. He said they specifically built this to answer their growing demand for ice to preserve their catch. Now, they even supply ice to the local Zamboanga market. This area also houses the Fishmeal plant/factory which makes use of the heads and tails of the fish that are not included in the manufacturing of sardines. “We don’t throw them away. We find use for the heads and the tails for fishmeal which we also export,” Mr. Tiu said.

In Ayala, Zamboanga, Mega’s cannery is called Ayala Seafoods, Corp. and this is the heartbeat of the business – where all the distinction converge to set Mega Sardines apart from the rest. We saw how the insulated bins from the pier were ushered in the factory and how the fish inside were still so fresh.

First machine the fish go to is to wash them, descale them and lead them inside where manpower proceeds to take away the spoils and the different breed of fish accidentally caught. The container then moves to the slicing machine that removes heads and tails. After that, the fish are placed inside the cans, which then pass through the sauce machine. When filled with the special Mega Sardines sauce (made only from organic and high grade ingredients), the cans are machine covered before being ushered at the retorting machine (for cooking). Labels were placed after they come out of the retorting machine and then the cans were placed in boxes for distribution.

Mike and the rest of the group were so impressed with what we saw. Mr. William told us that they are the only sardines company which opens their doors for a tour and inspection of their plant to anybody, so much so that it has become almost like a tourist attraction in Zamboanga already.

“We’re confident with our products and we believe that by revealing our operations to the public, we will help uplift the standards of sardines business locally to make our country more competitive globally,” Mr. Tiu Lim concluded.

No wonder, Cesar Montano had no qualms accepting endorsement deal with Mega. Truly, we can say that his product is one that stands alone in its league. The taste test that followed later, with all the other sardines brand side by side with Mega Sardines, sealed our observations.

We went back to Manila on the same day satisfied and convinced that Mega Sardines is really the best quality sardines we have around and we’re lucky to have it locally made.

was in cebu bout three weeks ago..wasnt able to tour much..the people of cebu are really nice and warm..unlike here in zc, mga basagulero mga tao..iba lng pananamit mo pagtripan ka na, or masama n agad tingin sayo..especially mga lasya, although not all, but majority..no offense, but that is the truth..=)

Zest Airways re scheduled their new flights from ZAM to SDK and CEB from Aug. 17 to October 17.Sana may flights rin from Zamboanga to Tawau, Malaysia...daming pinoy doon ang Chavacano is one of their official language

Na-move yung schedule dahil siguro sa kulang na sila ng aircraft.. baka hindi pa pwede yung aircraft na nag-overshoot sa Boracay hehe... Sa October, dahil darating na yata ang bagong aircrafts nila. :D

ZAMBOANGA CITY—Zamboanga City now has its first business-process outsourcing (BPO) or call center.

Top officials of the Philippine Long Distance Telephone (PLDT) Co., Growth with Equity in Mindanao (GEM) and local government have led the inauguration on Saturday of e.AXS Communications Inc. in this southern port city.

Jamela Anne Galindez, e.AXS Communications Inc.’s chief operating officer, said they will start full operations today with an initial 50 call-center agents to cater to the needs of its clients.

“We just ended the last week of training [of our personnel] on Friday,” Galindez said.

She disclosed that e.AXS Communications already has three clients—two in the US and one in Canada—both for inbound and outbound services.

She said they will initially start on 12 hours a day operations from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. and would eventually go on 24/7 before or by the end of this month.

She said they are targeting to offer bilingual and multilingual services and to increase its number of call-center agents to more than 500 by the end of this year.
Zamboanga City has the edge in terms of human resources since they have good capability to speak English and Spanish, according to Galindez.

The company is in the final stage to offer other services in the BPO industry, Galindez disclosed.

e.AXS Communications Inc., owned by homegrown young entrepreneurs, is a customer-contact solutions and services provider in the BPO industry.

“It is a BPO company set for the demands of our fast-paced world. It is run by its owners, people dedicated to the company and determined to make it succeed. With hands-on management from the top brass, our clients get full attention and support,” e.AXS Communications stated in its company profile.

“Our mission is to provide consistently excellent service and continuously seek fresh and innovative ways to improve on the existing processes and solutions that we offer, thus raising the bar of the BPO industry standard. It is also our mission to give Zamboanga City a secure foothold in the world of information technology and to prove to the world that our city is a prime e-commerce investment destination,” it added.

Nilo Bantilan, PLDT business head for small and medium enterprises group in the Visayas and Mindanao areas, has guaranteed that PLDT could provide the needed infrastructure in the BPO industry.

“We are looking at it [the opening of the call center] as a success for Zamboanga City,” Bantilan said.

Cornelia Victolero, GEM BPO specialist, said they assisted e.AXS Communications Inc. in terms of profiling the company, as well as that of the customers to ensure the firm would get the right clients. B. Garcia Jr.

Mindanao cooperative launches ATM service

ZAMBOANGA CITY—The Aurora Integrated Multipurpose Cooperative (AIMCoop) launched on Thursday the automated-teller machine (ATM) service enabling the cooperative to serve its more than 10,000 clientele in this southern port city 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

AIMCoop general manager Pacienciano Tomarong said the launching of the ATM service in this city is the 12th for the cooperative, which has 21 branches in the Visayas and Mindanao regions.

Tomarong said AIMCoop is the first cooperative in Mindanao to engage in electronic banking and the second in the country. The first one that launched ATM service to its clientele is a cooperative based in the Visayas region.

He said AIMCoop members who are holders of ATM cards could also transact with other banking institutions that are members of the Bancnet, Megalink and Expressnet as the cooperative qualified to the standards of the three banking networks.

Likewise, he said ATM cardholders of other banking institutions that are members of the three banking networks could also make transactions with any of the 12 AIMCoop branches that have ATMs.

Councilor Cesar Iturralde, chairman of the city council’s committee on cooperatives, described the launching of ATM service by AIMCoop as the first of its kind in this southern port city.

“This [launching of ATM service] will bring more effective services, especially to cooperatives in the city of Zamboanga,” Iturralde said in an interview.

Iturralde said the launching of ATM service by AIMCoop is a step forward for the cooperative as “this will make them more efficient in their business transaction in this city.”

The AIMCoop branch in Zamboanga City is barely more than two years in operations as it opened its branch here on July 20, 2007.

Tomarong disclosed that the AIMCoop branch in Zamboanga City has at present 10,868 members and its membership is still growing.

Tomarong said they intend to open three more branches in this city.

AIMCoop services include savings, time deposits, loans, money transfer and special kiddie and teens savings.

AIMCoop was organized in the town of Aurora in Zamboanga del Sur by a Columbian priest in 1967 with 44 members and with a total capitalization of P400.

its amazing since i arive in my land zambo last april, monthly development rate is far as i imagine ^^ para ciang cebu development rate, kahit pa 4 to 8 story lang but the growth rate is almost the same atmosphere when i was in cebu^^ every month may good news^^ every week may new establishment nag oopen every week may nag coconstruct^^

^^yeahh i remember this ong ung moro gulf tsunami kung saan ung sakol island ung tinamaan nito hmmm bale according sa mga aunt ko sa zamboanga city sana un pero may milagro nangyari and that was during nag ka earthquake kung saan malakas tinamaan ung Cotabato it was way back 1970's

By the way may nakausap me agent ng Hyundai motors dito sa Zamboanga...bale 2 ung showrooms ng Hyundai one is in the present location sa may Suterville and the other is in Putik highway according to him next year pa ung opening ng showrooms sa may Putik and di pa raw sure kung ssansyong ung sa kabila kc kung okie na raw ung sa ssansyong pero as of wat he said Nissan motors muna raw ung ilalagay sa kabilang showroom sa may putik....ask lng me may pic kau ng Hyundai showrrom sa Putik...

^^hopefully sana ala ng politics magaganap heheh...and sana mas maganda kung kahabaan nito ay ayusin and lagyan ng mga gardens and pagandahin sya di lng ung sa paseo kung di sa kahabaan ng Valderosa street.....sayang mala old style ang dating kaso di pinapansin ng government..

pansin ko rin ung plaza alvarez napaka dry nag mukhang desert lng and di kaakit akit tingnan...

dapat ayusin nila ung Plaza Pershing, Plaza Rizal, Plaza Alvarez, And the sunken Garden....etong place na to kitang kita ng mga tao pero anu ginagawa ng government mas inuna pa ung Caling Gardens sa may Pasonanca:bash::bash::bash:

A taste of Turkish cuisine
[ EMAIL THIS STORY TO A FRIEND ]
“Mouthwatering, toothsome, delectable”.
That’s how people described the Turkish foods as they tasted the different cuisines in Turkish Savory last August 1, 2009 at Filipino-Turkish Tolerance School from 8:00 am to 4: 00 pm.

Turkish cuisine which could be best described as a fusion and refinement of various culinary traditions of Central Asia and Middle Eastern cuisines making it unique and greatly appreciated by the people. Zamboangueños had once proved it as the Turkish community here in Zamboanga City organized an event showcasing their own delicacies in Celebration of Nutrition Month in FTTS.
Filled with much joy and anticipation the Turkish Administration of the FTTS with the help of its Filipino staff joined hands from the planning to the preparation of the event .Giving their best to give the guests a best accommodation they could possibly give.
The guests started to arrived at 8:00 a.m. They were warmly received and guided by Mr. Mehmet Cetin ( Elem. Director) , Mr . Ercan Senisci ( Asst. Dir. Of High School), Mr. Abdulhamit Durakoglu (Asst. Dir. Of Student Affairs) , Mr. Arnel Bartolome ( FTTES Principal) .
The guests present in the event were officials from the different national and local government and they were Mayor Celso L. Lobregat, Vice Mayor Mannix Dalipe, Presidential Asst. for Western Mindanao, ASEC Crisanto Monsi B. dela Cruz, Councilors Rudy Lim, Gerky Valesco, Rey Candido, Mel Sadain, Mario Roca., Staff of first District Wesmincom Chief Gen. Moh’d Ben Dolorfino and his staff, WMSU President Dr. Grace Rebollos with its Deans and Professors, ADZU Prof. Claire Conception . Atty. Linda E. Lim, Atty. Bashiruddin Adil U. Adil of MARINA, Dr. Albert and Araceli Tan , Dr. Zaida Sadain-Urao and other countless guests who extended their time to be part of it.
The guests were welcomed with an aromatic air, alluring environment and stomach-rumbling food. Displayed on the table were delicious Turkish foods such as doner, mercimek corbassi, ozbek pilavi , gozleme, sutlac, marklube,keskul, sarma, salata, arap asi and their famous refreshment the Turkish tea.
Amidst the crowd, the guests managed to enjoy eating, chatting and meeting people. Satisfaction and enjoyment were very apparent to the faces of the guests as they ate the food with gusto. The FTTES is opening a culinary course for those who are interested to learn how to cook their different delicacies.
On the other hand Mayor Lobregat and other personalities joined the teachers and students of FTTS as they celebrated the Nutrion Month. Laughters and cheers filled the air as the mayor took part of the activity. Pupils excitedly sold their fruits and vegetables and the mayor gladly purchased them for the other students.
The FTTS family and the Turkish community opened its gate to make the event possible. Through this event we can draw the officials, professionals and ordinary people closer to one another for a common good. This kind of event could possibly open connections and close gaps between people, leaders and believers. This is where they can seat down and talk together regardless races, beliefs and culture.
Turkish Savory is just a simple gathering but deeply rooted with mission which is to unite people.

by the way may mga negosyo na rin sila dito one is the Kebab and shawarma

^^well ang pagkakaalam ko they look for a place were they can exchange their kapwa turkish who wants to study here in the philippines so they reach zamboanga tru sa mga Muslim investors and mga muslim scholars and they choose zamboanga...and dito kc sa zamboanga u can see many mosque aside from the ARMM cities/Municipalities in the philippines...kaya if you go here may mga Turkish ka maencounter.....i remember nung nsa college me may classmate me mga Turkish na nagstudy dito.....and u know they know they are in foreign land and maganda pa sumasakay tlga sila ng jeep......

ZAMBOANGA CITY—Zamboanga City now has its first business-process outsourcing (BPO) or call center.

Top officials of the Philippine Long Distance Telephone (PLDT) Co., Growth with Equity in Mindanao (GEM) and local government have led the inauguration on Saturday of e.AXS Communications Inc. in this southern port city.

Jamela Anne Galindez, e.AXS Communications Inc.’s chief operating officer, said they will start full operations today with an initial 50 call-center agents to cater to the needs of its clients.

“We just ended the last week of training [of our personnel] on Friday,” Galindez said.

She disclosed that e.AXS Communications already has three clients—two in the US and one in Canada—both for inbound and outbound services.

She said they will initially start on 12 hours a day operations from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. and would eventually go on 24/7 before or by the end of this month.

She said they are targeting to offer bilingual and multilingual services and to increase its number of call-center agents to more than 500 by the end of this year.

Zamboanga City has the edge in terms of human resources since they have good capability to speak English and Spanish, according to Galindez.

The company is in the final stage to offer other services in the BPO industry, Galindez disclosed.

e.AXS Communications Inc., owned by homegrown young entrepreneurs, is a customer-contact solutions and services provider in the BPO industry.

“It is a BPO company set for the demands of our fast-paced world. It is run by its owners, people dedicated to the company and determined to make it succeed. With hands-on management from the top brass, our clients get full attention and support,” e.AXS Communications stated in its company profile.

“Our mission is to provide consistently excellent service and continuously seek fresh and innovative ways to improve on the existing processes and solutions that we offer, thus raising the bar of the BPO industry standard. It is also our mission to give Zamboanga City a secure foothold in the world of information technology and to prove to the world that our city is a prime e-commerce investment destination,” it added.

Nilo Bantilan, PLDT business head for small and medium enterprises group in the Visayas and Mindanao areas, has guaranteed that PLDT could provide the needed infrastructure in the BPO industry.

“We are looking at it [the opening of the call center] as a success for Zamboanga City,” Bantilan said.

Cornelia Victolero, GEM BPO specialist, said they assisted e.AXS Communications Inc. in terms of profiling the company, as well as that of the customers to ensure the firm would get the right clients. B. Garcia Jr.

by the way may mga negosyo na rin sila dito one is the Kebab and shawarma

may mura nman mga hotels and pension houses dito pero im not sure if may kamurahan compared jan as far as i know nasa 350 to 400 ung mura dito kahit may electric fan and complete with amenities na sya...pero if u want try to survey if hopefully we can help u

i know there are motels, like 350 for 24 hours... lower, 180 pero 3 hours lng... alam na..hehe guys in zambo, let's help dessiminate information about latest hotel/mtel/inn rates there, para we can help Hakz2007... psy?buenos? i give u the work... i'm gonna give u 40 pesos each load if u can do this for our tourist Hakz007... tnx! ^_^

sa totoo lng kung na develop ung sa area g don alfaro kung saan ung alta mall and ung na defunct na galaxy mall im sure isa syang business park na rin sa Zamboanga kaso di natuloy sayang tlga sana madevelop na tong area na to para maging mas kaakit aakit na rin.....kelan kaya magkaroon ng business park ung zamboanga:)
