View Full Version : SEATTLE - Safeco Field (47,116)

Qwest Field is not the only great stadium in Seattle. It's neighbor is even greater in the opinion of many: Safeco Field

My favorite of the new baseball parks, I think it is sorely neglected when discussions of best stadium come up. Its the retractable roof that really gets out of the way, in addition to fitting with setting, being a great pitcher's park and doing a great job of adding character.

As I said, the design really fits into the city. When I think of Seattle, I think of brick lofts, the ocean port, modern. The ballpark fits all of these in its facade. Even the lights are reminiscent of the port cranes nearby

One thing that really works for Safeco is how open it feels with the roof open. I can't think of another retractable roof stadium that doesn't feel like one. Of course there's the huge reminder in right field, but that's leaves 3 of the 4 sides out in the open. This could be the result of not trying to be indoors, but rather under a true roof

When the roof is closed the outfield still has an airy feel, while the infield seats feel more indoors.

I don't know the story about these games, but maybe this was before Qwest Field (Seahawks Stadium at first) was built. Qwest Field is newer.

USA v Japan in soccer is traditionally played in baseball parks, it's because baseball is the national game for both countries. I think Nintendo has something to do with it. (NoA owns the Mariners).

That said, it's a beautiful stadium. Obviously not meant for the aforementioned codes of football, but it does as well as the concrete donuts did while still looking fantastic.

Isn't 47,116 A GOOD CAPACITY?
Jesus Christ! It's enough for boring baseball. American Football, volleyball, basketball and Soccer are real exciting sports.

On the other hand, this stadium is quite nice:)I must visit Seattle because I still have a valid green card:D

Good for Seattle for making a retractable roof stadium that actually looks good.I'm a Seattle Mariners fan, I like Safeco but I occasionally wish it had a different facade. Not a huge fan of the brick on the 1st Ave side. I kind of wish the facade was more reminiscent of the WaMu Tower, it would blend in better with the retractable roof, IMO. I've also read that the roof tracks on the 1st base side by Edgar Martinez Dr. remind people of an erector set.

I don't know about the soccer game, but I know for a fact that the football game there was the 2001 Seattle Bowl (December 27 of that year), one of only two times that that college football bowl game was played. It was in Safeco in 2001 because Qwest Field wasn't open yet (the Field didn't open until July of '02). The 2002 Seattle Bowl was at Qwest, though. I presume that time frame when the Kingdome was demolished but Qwest was still being built was when the soccer game happened, too. They preferred it there rather than at Husky Stadium (where the University of Washington play football), which is where the Seahawks played in 2000 and 2001.

When the roof is closed- How high is the roof from the playing field?

http://i220.photobucket.com/albums/dd51/Jericho-79/450x300roof_closed.jpg

Anyone know for sure?

Hideous facade I don't mind the roof track structure, nor do I mind the retractable roof, period. I'm glad it's there. I do however, wish on occasion that a different design had been built along the 1st Ave side (the obligatory brick). Something that would've blended in with rest of the ballpark better. But, honestly there's not a current ballpark's facade that I'm impressed with. Of the red brick motif crowd, Coors Field probably has the best overall facade. IMO.

I would love Safeco to change its color scheme in the near future, perhaps from the green theme to navy blue, silver and some teal. Make it look like the home of the Mariners.

For the first time since the DH was introduced in 1973, National League rules were enforced in an American League ballpark on June 24, 2011. Because of a conflict with a U2 concert in Miami, the June 24-26 Mariners/Marlins series was moved to Safeco Field. The Marlins are the home team, while the Mariners are playing "road" games at their home ballpark. NL rules in an American League ballpark. Last year, Safeco was the venue of the first game broadcast in 3D and now this!

Yesterday the Oakland Athletics' Chris Carter hit a pop up that hit a steel truss of Safeco's roof. That's the 3rd time that has occurred this season. It never happened previously. Safeco opened July 15, 1999.

Following last week's season finale, someone asked Mariners television voice on ROOT Sports on Twitter, Dave Sims, who also does NFL football and NCAA basketball on Westwood One radio, if "Howie and Chuck", Mariners CEO Howard Lincoln and Mariners president Chuck Armstrong, were going to add a new main scoreboard at Safeco. Sims replied, "It's coming".
Before the 2010 season, a new out-of-town scoreboard was installed behind the bullpens and prior to the 2011 season, new LED ribbon boards were installed on the fascia of the second deck. We have reason to be optimistic about a new scoreboard with a larger video screen to debut at Safeco before next season!

I wonder how that process works. You don't just call the 800 number and ask for a #6, extra large, with the Mariners' colors in trim.

One of these days it would be great if Safeco was outfitted in Mariners colors (navy, silver, "dark cyan", and white). I cringed each time Ken Wilson, one of the broadcasters who filled in for the late Niehaus, stated he "loved the green" of Safeco Field. It maybe traditional to some, but I am over the green, which has become too commonplace in conservative baseball, I am ready for a change to Safeco's color scheme.

rare roof malfunction at Safeco (http://mynorthwest.com/646/618778/A-rare-malfunction-at-Safeco-Field-for-FanFest)
a broken wheel was the culprit, and in order to repair it, the roof section that failed well need to be jacked up to repair the wheel.
