View Full Version : Tunnel underneath Georgia Avenue at Forest Glen
ValenciaSon September 14th, 2008, 03:03 PM This is for my son's math homework. He needs to perform a survey using an unbiased sample and a biased sample. We need a sample size of at least 20. Thanks in advance.
There should be a tunnel built underneath Georgia Avenue at the Forest Glen intersection.

I don't know how I missed this. I say NO WAY, the new bridge was having enough, crime problems as is. Plus a tunnel would take too many people off the streets. Forest Glen/Montgomery Hills will get a substantial redesign in the future and I think a tunnel will just be another obstacle to deal with.
Someone suggested a tunnel under the tracks in downtown and that was a bad idea despite there being was more people walking around.
PeterSmith September 16th, 2008, 04:46 PM I'm unfamiliar with this issue. Are we talking a pedestrian tunnel? If so, then I say no. I've never seen a pedestrian tunnel that I would classify as a good thing.

I think you misunderstand the issue here. Let me make it clear that the tunnel would simply be another exit for the Metro, just as most Metro stations have multiple exits on different corners in DC, this would be the same thing.
This is a different area than the bridge, and the existing bridge does nothing for people crossing Georgia. It isn't near the Montgomery Hills shopping area, is north of I-495, and has absolutely nothing to do with it. It is my understanding that there have been a number of accidents involving pedestrians at the intersection, and this tunnel will simply add another exit for the station (closing when the station closes). It would ferry people from inside the Metro to the northeast corner of Georgia and Forest Glen, just like the existing exit allows people to travel under Forest Glen road from the entrance to the kiss and ride lot. A large number of people already make the dangerous trip crossing Forest Glen and then Georgia, at times jaywalking, during rush hour to walk home. The tunnel would take nobody "off the streets", as it has nothing to do with street life or retail, and instead make it much safer for people to get into and out of the station. The issue with the immense number of people crossing Georgia to and from this station has been a large issue for a quite a while in this area.
bamboo stick September 16th, 2008, 08:35 PM ValenciaSol, this is the plan that I know the neighborhood and county are discussing, is this what you are talking about?
In this picture, you see the existing pedestrian bridge which goes over the 495 exits and under 495 colored a very light blue on the west side of Georgia.
Above that is a darker blue box, which is where the Metro station is. The existing exit tunnels are colored green, and the proposed entrance/exit is shaded purple/pink. As you can see, the proposed entrance/exit tunnel makes it infinitely safer to get to and from the Metro and does nothing to bypass Montgomery Hills, which is a good 1/3 mile south of the Metro and this tunnel proposal.

PeterSmith September 16th, 2008, 10:51 PM Ah. Thanks, bamboo. This changes quite a bit.
ValenciaSon September 23rd, 2008, 12:12 PM Right, it was the proposed pink in your illustration of which this survey focused on. This intersection sees the highest amount of pedestrian fatalities, which is why the tunnel is so desired by those who are familiar. Thanks for all your responses.

I stand corrected then. I saw "Georgia ave at Forest Glen" in the title and thought "oh no, not a another pedestrian debacle".
bamboo stick September 27th, 2008, 08:25 AM Good to know we're all on the same page now. Perhaps a follow-up poll would be in order since most people didn't even know what this thing was to begin with. I highly doubt anyone would oppose this (unless they favor high-risk pedestrian crossings) knowing what they should now.
