KARIAPATTI:The practice of government distributing various items free of cost to the people, would make the beneficiaries lazy, former President A P J Abdul Kalam said during an interaction with college students here on Friday.


During an interaction programme with the president, Aiswarya of Devangar College asked the former President what was his opinion about the provision of freebies to the people by the government.

Abdul Kalam replied that freebies would only make people lazy. Everyone should work hard and with that earning purchase all that he or she needed. 'Only food bought with one's earnings would assimilate in his system', he said.

Abdul Kalam said that there were 75 crores of people living in six lakh villages in India. Only if the younger generation becomes literate, the country would progress.

Expressing the hope that India would emerge as a developed nation within nine years, he said that during the next 10 years, the nation's economic growth would reach ten percent. Individual income should also keep pace with this growth, he added.

College Secretary K S Savundaya presided and Principal Ravikumar welcomed the gathering.

'Will abide by SC verdict on UES': Jaya

The Tamil Nadu Government will abide by the Supreme Court verdict on the Uniform Education System (UES), Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa told the State Assembly today.

Intervening Mr Gunasekaran (CPI) during the debate on the budget, Ms Jayalalithaa said the Supreme Court order on the UES was expected any moment and the government will abide by it.

''We are expecting the verdict from the Supreme Court. Once the Court pronounces its orders, the Government will abide by it,'' Ms Jayalalithaa said. Earlier, during the debate, Mr Gunasekaran referred to the UES and said confusion prevailed among the students and parents over the system of Education to be pursued by them after the State Government had deferred the UES and sought the Government's stand on it.

The CPI member also requested the government to implement the UES this year itself after removing the errors in the syllabus. The State Government had moved the Apex Court challenging the Madras High Court order upholding the UES and directing the government to implement it for all classes from the current academic year.

The High Court had also struck down as invalid, the amendments made to Sec 3 of the Tamil Nadu Uniform System of School Education Act, 2010, seeking to postpone the UES launched by the previous DMK Regime and directed the government to implement it for classes one to Ten.

The Government challenged in the Supreme Court which had reserved its orders after the arguments were completed.

my relatives in karnataka were witness to a deva prashna held in their village before renovation started.

Prashna refused permission and asked to find first rama lakshmana sita buried in the village.

Actually I was a non believer in my school days. Mainly because of Family putting so much pressure and enforcing orthodox issues on me. I hated Sanskrit so much then. I took up Tamil with vengence :lol:

Industries are going to policy of use and throw! since they get two-three chinese products(equipments) for the same cost what can be supplied from europe. Good Thing u had done Kannan Sir, But many of my frnd are doing business by importing items from China.
Last vacation iam surprized to see how they tagged the prizes in items like Satin, Collar Labels, Toys etc.
Literally speaking me and 3 or 4 friends are sitting, Every item are taken one after one and prized with no basics(some times prizes are aggreed based on lucky numbers!) .
Even then ther aggree they are getting almost 400% profit.
China is just mass producing all consumer and industrial items in huge quantity , with its inherent cheap labour products are coming dead cheap.

In a free trade world, China has the muzzle power to kill local industries.
US and other Western countries have Knowledge based Innovative industry to survive.

I am not an expert in any thing but just a small time pety programmer, I feel we should do a hybrid of Western and Chinese Ideas.

Every Industry should form one big association amonth themselves and collectively sponcer innovative research process. As it is an amalgamation of many industries fund will not be a problem. Resulting innovative solutions should be shared by the members.

China is the manufacturing power house of the world, we India are long long back as compared to china in manufacturing. Our govt need to prevent entry of the chinese companies to some extent otherwise India will become like US where most of the items are imported from China.

We cannot prevent, at the best we can increase duty showing anti-dumping rules. But that is not solution. we should really develope infrastructure,
power and innovative cheap solutions in many industries and develop knowledge based industries at the same time.

There are many Quality Japanese (now a days Chinese also) fabric machines are coming, But Japan does not even have its own Garments industry. We are lucky that we have big garment industries in Mumbai, Gujrat, Banglore and TN.
So, our Machinery industry(particularly in chennai and coimbatore) should put lot of money in research and increase the reputation as destination for trusted Source of Machineries.

That is the normal practice in the world.

When somebody offer us grant or low price or low interest loans, generally, it is tied to the supplies from their country or contracts to their country's companies.

Japan will supply the electric engines for the Metro Rail or so. Britain or US supply war equipments / crafts in similar terms.

Even India does that with African & South Asian countries.

True. There is a link in youtube about Technopark Phase II or III. If any investor could see that will prefer that closing the eyes [If location is not a constraint]. See how TN govt. is marketing? pity!!! Lets see how this road-show scheme picks up for marketing IT parks in Tier II.

My park (which I want to convert to IT Park) already have Tier II infrastructure in place like no power for 8-10 hours per day, water supply once or twice a week, sakkadai on road that overflows at times providing a stream front view etc., And yeah we are in most urbanized state of planet earth.

Faced with the grim prospect of the state’s outstanding debt touching over Rs 1.18 lakh crore by the end of 2011-12, Tamil Nadu government on Monday indicated there was nothing to worry as it would be lesser than 13th Finance Commission norms.

“The debt situation would be only 20.39 per cent of the Gross Domestic Product (GSDP).” Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa told the Tamil Nadu Assembly.

Intervening during a discussion on the budget, presented last week by Finance Minister O. Panneerselvam, Ms. Jayalalithaa insisted that this was lesser than the 24.50 benchmark set by the 13th Finance Commission.

Presenting the Budget, Mr. Panneerselvam had also made a similar argument, saying the debt ratio to GSDP was lesser than Finance Commission norms.

The AIADMK government, which assumed power in May, had started with an opening debt of Rs 1,01,349 crore which is projected to touch Rs 1,18,610 crore by the end of 2011-12.

That doesn't mean that I am against government spending. I am okay with it as long as it introduces jobs and creates hard and soft infrastructure. With US credit rating gone a notch down everyone will feel the ripples in near term.

Chennai, Aug 9 (PTI) Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalitha today charged the Centre with not responding to the state government's demand for special assistance of Rs one lakh crore. Intervening during a discussion on the budget in the Assembly, she said that despite repeated attempts, the Centre had not responded so far on Tamil Nadu's demand. "There has been no reply to our demands," Jayalalitha said. Jayalalitha had made a plea to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh during her visit to New Delhi in June seeking special package for the state. The list of her demands included assistance for implementation of the Mono Rail Project in Chennai costing Rs 16,650 crore and an amount of Rs 10,200 crore over the next five years to provide laptops to students studying in government and government aided schools. She had also sought special package for modernising fishing sector and early completion of Koodangulam Atomic Power Station and Neyveli Thermal Station II.

In a setback to the Jayalalithaa government in Tamil Nadu, the Supreme Court on Tuesday rejected its plea for scrapping the uniform education system brought in by the earlier DMK government and directed its immediate implementation.

A three-judge bench of Justices J.M. Panchal, Deepak Verma and B.S. Chauhan dismissed the state’s plea that the Uniform System of School Education (Amendment) Act brought into force by the DMK government was sub-standard, lacked quality and was politically motivated.

The apex court also ordered that the act be implemented within 10 days.

Immediately after assuming power, the Jayalalithaa government had moved an amendment to the act on the ground that it was sub-standard and the syllabus prescribed was essentially done to promote the political interest of the then DMK government.

The Madras High Court’s order had struck down the amendment moved by the Jayalalithaa government.

The Tamil Nadu government had defended its decision to defer the implementation of the Act on the ground that it suffered from serious deficiencies.

Senior counsel P.P. Rao, appearing for the state, had said that the curriculum introduced by the previous DMK government “lacked quality, standard and did not conform to the parameters fixed by the NCERT.”

The counsel had said that former Vice-Chancellor of Bhartidasan University Prof Muthukarupan, on whose recommendations the Act was formulated, had complained that the syllabus lacked quality and did not fulfil the suggestion and guidelines prescribed by him.

The state had challenged the high court’s order on the ground that it was “illegal and erroneous.”

The high court had also directed the state government to distribute the textbooks printed under the Uniform System of Education to enable teachers commence classes and to complete the exercise by July 22.

Tamil Nadu has over 1.2 crore students in four streams of school education -- 45,000 state board schools, 11,000 matriculation schools, 25 oriental schools and 50 Anglo-Indian schools, all with separate syllabus, textbooks and schemes of examinations.

‘Samacheer Kalvi’ scheme, aimed at bringing about uniform education, was shelved by Ms. Jayalalithaa in one of her first acts after returning to power.

(a): As per the Census 2001 data available the State of Tamil Nadu does not have the highest number of urban homeless in India . It has 57,128 urban houseless population.

(b): The details as per Census 2001 are annexed. (see link down)

(c) to (e): Ministry of Housing & Urban Poverty Alleviation does not maintain data of night shelters in various states and cities.

‘Housing’ and ‘colonization’ being State subjects, the primary responsibility of providing shelter lies with the State Governments. Central government however, provides financial assistance to States through various schemes. It is currently supporting states to provide shelter, tenure security and basic amenities to slum dwellers, under Jawaharlal Nehru Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM), create affordable housing stock through the ‘Affordable Housing in Partnership’ Scheme and reduce cost of home loans with 5% interest subsidy under Interest Subsidy Scheme for Housing the Urban Poor (ISHUP) Scheme.

Earlier, from 1988-89, the Ministry provided financial support to states to create shelter for the houseless under the scheme for ‘Night Shelter for Urban Shelterless’. Cumulatively, under the erstwhile scheme of Night Shelter for the Urban Footpath Dwellers, 97 schemes seeking inter alia 17341 beds, 15603 toilet seats, 2015 baths and 2102 urinals were sanctioned covering 15 States/Union Territories. The scheme was transferred to the state sector in 2005-06, and financial assistance from the Center was discontinued.

The Devaprasnam found out that the revelation of treasures has seriously discomfited the God since the treasures are inexorably linked to the preservation of ‘Chaitanya’ and hence they should have a secret nature.

Referring to the unopened ‘B’ vault, the astrologers said that the chaitanya of the temple is closely associated with the ‘B’ vault and disturbing certain rooted traditions could unleash the wrath of God.

Since the temple is of extreme national significance, any such inauspicious signs related to temple could also affect the nation and even the existence of administrative set-up. The curses of Brahmin society who once took care of the temple and who were later evicted still linger over the temple, indicated the astrologers.

The rituals and customs in the temple were found to have long lost the sanctity with which such rituals ought to be performed. “There is something called ‘ Fear of the God’. All those who look after the temple affairs have unfortunately come to dispossess the fear of god,’’ said Madhur Narayana Rangabhattu, the chief astrologer.

It was also pointed out that the people on duty in the temple have profaned the ambience of the temple. The astrologers said that those associated with temple affairs have indulged in activities so unsuited to a temple including immoral activities and that too inside the temple. Meanwhile, the Devaprasnam also listed out certain special poojas to be performed to cleanse the temple and to appease the Lord. The final judgement will be taken on Wednesday.

HC orders notice to Stalin over electoral victory

The Madras High Court on Wednesday ordered issue of notice to DMK leader MK Stalin on a petition challenging his election to the assembly from Kolathur, filed by the AIADMK candidate who lost by 2,600 votes.

When the petition, filed by Saidai Duraisamy, came up for hearing, Justice K Venkataraman issued a notice to the former deputy chief minister returnable in four weeks.

In his petition, Duraisamy had alleged that Stalin abused his position as the deputy chief minister and misused official machinery during the April 13 Assembly polls.

The judge also issued similar notices to former DMK minister AV Velu, whose election from Tiruvannamalai had been challenged by his AIADMK rival S Ramachandran and to G Anbazhagan of the DMK (Kumbakonam), whose election had been questioned by his AIADMK rival Rama Ramanathan.

Notices were also issued to DMK's KR Periyakarruppan (Tirupattur) and Nallathambi (Egmore SC), whose elections had also been challenged by independent candidates.

What JJ has asked for is the Additional Funds from the Central Govt apart from what was planned (CG has sanctioned what was asked as planned funds)

For any additional funds, details and approvals are needed from GOM at CG. Her top priority is the Power Infrastructure and unofficially the Freebies. CG does not accept the freebies portion, I think. Unless TNEB & other arms of Power Dept complete the reforms as demanded by the lending agencies, funds for this will be difficult.

Already the TNEB & its arms owe so much to suppliers & contractors and it is having a negative balance of more than Rs. 1 lakh crores. If TN Govt does not pay them, TNEB may be forced to wind up soon and the private sector will not come forward to set up new power units in TN.. She needs funds for the same.

She has settled some very old dues so that the atmosphere has not been worsened.

For getting the funds, TN Govt has to be pro active including building a bridge with the concerned people at CG. Posturing is going on from both sides. Congress has taught a lesson to MK @ Kanimozhi issue and may extract political concessions from JJ for this additional funds. On Srilanka issue, she has put CG in docks and the US downgrade has forced the biggies to fly out to take care of their priorities.

Their concern is different. They have not worried because they got 50%. 50% is not bad. But govt had selected only 5 companies out of 500 companies running in cbe,and only those 5 companies will be benefited.

Computer makers are wary of the staggered payment system in the Tamil Nadu government scheme to honour the AIADMK poll promise of giving free laptops to higher secondary school and college students.

Their other worry is over branding issues. Manufacturers have been told not to print their logos on the laptops.

The tendering process for the first phase was initiated in July and the successful bidders are yet to be announced. Though major manufacturers have participated in the initial process, they have reservations about payment and branding clauses, according to officials of some of these companies.

As part of its poll promise, AIADMK had announced plans to distribute about 6.8 million free laptops over five years. This will cost the state Rs 10,200 crore.

The scheme is said to have created India’s single largest captive market for laptops. The overall market in India, about 10 million PCs in 2010, is expected to reach 13.2 million this year. Gartner expects sales to grow by about 61 per cent over last year to about 5.9 million mobile PCs/ laptops, not counting the Tamil Nadu government.

The state invited tenders for the first phase of the free laptop scheme in July. This was to buy 912,000 laptops. In the revised budget estimates, Rs 912 crore has been provided for the scheme. Companies had placed technical bids, with price bids coming later. Supplies are expected to begin on September 1. The scheme will be launched on September 15.

According to a person in the know, companies, including Samsung, ASUS and Dell, have placed bids. The state is said to prefer brands that have service centres in all districts.

Officials at the Electronics Corporation of Tamil Nadu (Elcot) refused to comment as the process is under way. The minimum specifications required include the Windows or Linux operating system, wireless 2 GB RAM and 320 GB hard disk.

“We have no issues with meeting the technical specifications. Our problem is with the payment clause. To our understanding, the government will pay in installments over a three-year period. We have doubts about being paid on time and don’t want to involve our partners, who may lose heavily,” the national head of a big multinational laptop maker told Financial Chronicle.

தற்போதுள்ள பாடத்திட்டத்தை படித்தால் கிளர்க்குகளை உருவாக்கலாம். ஆனால் அப்துல் கலாம் போன்றவர்களை உருவாக்க முடியாது.

உண்மையான சமச்சீர் கல்வியைக் கொண்டு வர வேண்டுமானால் முதலில் பள்ளிகளில் அடிப்படை வசதிகள் செய்ய வேண்டும். அதற்கான திட்டங்களை வகுக்க வேண்டும்.

தமிழக அரசு ஒரு சிறப்பான பட்ஜெட்டை தாக்கல் செய்துள்ளது. பல்வேறு இலவச திட்டங்கள் அறிவிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளன.

பல்வேறு உதவிகளும் அதிகமாக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது. அனைவரும் பாராட்டும் வகையில் சிறந்த பட்ஜெட் அமைந்துள்ளது. இதில் புதிய திட்டம் எதுவும் இல்லை என்று சிலர் கூறுகிறார்கள். அவர்கள் கண் இருந்தும் பாராத கருத்து குருடர்கள். இது கண்ணை மூடிக்கொண்டு பாராட்டக் கூடிய பட்ஜெட்.

அந்த அளவுக்கு ஏராளமான சலுகைகள் அறிவிக்கப்பட்டு உள்ளன. ஏழை நடுத்தர மக்களை விலைவாசி உயர்வு தாக்கத்தில் இருந்து மீட்பதற்கு புதிய திட்டங்கள் உதவும். ரூ.8 ஆயிரத்து 900 கோடி அளவுக்கு புதிய திட்டங்களும், சலுகைகளும் அளிக்கப்பட்டு இருப்பது சமுதாயத்தின் அடித்தள மக்களின் வாழ்க்கை தரத்தை உயர்த்தும்.

ஏழைகளை அடையாளம் காண்பித்து அவர்களுக்கு ஏற்படும் குறைகளைகளைய அடையாள அட்டை வழங்க வேண்டும். ஏழைகளுக்கு உதவிகள் முழுமையாக கிடைக்க இடையூறாக இருந்து தவறு செய்யும் அதிகாரிகள் மீது கடும் நடவடிக்கை எடுக்க வேண்டும். இளைஞர்களின் வேலை வாய்ப்பு அதிகரிக்க கல்லூரிகளிலேயே, அவர்களுக்கு வேலை வாய்ப்பு பயிற்சி அளிக்க வேண்டும்.

திமுக ஆட்சியில் இதற்கான அக்கறை செலுத்தப்படவில்லை. விவசாயிகளுக்கு இப்போது சலுகைகளை அரசு அறிவித்து உள்ளது. அவர்கள் பயிரிடும் விளை பொருட்களுக்கு உத்தரவாதம் கிடைக்க அரசு நடவடிக்கை எடுக்க வேண்டும்.

பெண்களுக்கு இந்த பட்ஜெட்டில் பல்வேறு சலுகைகள் அறிவிக்கப்பட்டு உள்ளன. பெண்கள் நாட்டின் கண்கள் என்ற திட்டத்தை நான் எனது சொந்த பணத்தில் செயல்படுத்தினேன். எல்.ஐ.சி. மூலம் ரூ. 10 ஆயிரம் முதலீடு செய்தால் திருமண வயதை எட்டும் போது அந்த பெண்ணுக்கு ரூ.2 லட்சம் கிடைக்கும். இது போன்று ரூ.30 ஆயிரம் போட்டால் 18 ஆண்டில் ரூ.3 லட்சம் கிடைக்கும் திட்டம் எல்.ஐ.சி.யில் உள்ளது. இதனை அரசு பரிசீலிக்க வேண்டும்.

கடந்த திமுக ஆட்சியில் சுய உதவிக் குழுக்கள் அரசியல் நோக்கத்திற்காக பயன்பட்டு வந்தன. சமூக நலத்துறையில் இருந்த சுய உதவி குழுக்கள் மு.க.ஸ்டாலினிடம் உள்ளாட்சி துறை இருந்ததால் அந்த துறைக்கு மாற்றப்பட்டது. எனவே, சுய உதவிக் குழுக்களை மீண்டும் சமூக நலத்துறைக்கு மாற்ற அரசு நடவடிக்கை எடுக்க வேண்டும் என்றார்.

இதை வைத்துக்கொண்டு இத்தனை திட்டங்களையும் உருவாக்கி செயல்படுத்தி வருகிறோம். இதை விட கூடுதலாக செய்ய வேண்டும் என்ற மனமும் ஆசையும் எங்களுக்கு உண்டு. நீங்கள் முன் வைக்கிற கோரிக்கைகளை விட ஆயிரம் மடங்கு அதிகம் செய்ய வேண்டும் என்று எண்ணம் உண்டு. ஆனால் நிதி தட்டுப்பாடு காரணமாக எங்கள் கைகள் கட்டுப்பட்டுள்ளன. அந்த கட்டுப்பாட்டை தகர்த்து பகீரத முயற்சி செய்து தமிழக மக்களுக்கு நிச்சயம் நன்மை செய்வோம்.

மத்திய அரசு எத்தனை தடைகளை விதித்தாலும் அந்த தடைகளை எல்லாம் தகர்த்து தமிழக மக்களுக்கு நன்மை செய்வோம்.

Mr. Sinha, who was External Affairs Minister during the NDA regime, criticised Prime Minister Manmohan Singh for his reported remarks that India cannot impose economic sanctions against Sri Lanka as it would encourage China to displace it as a strategic and trading partner of the island nation.

“This shows mere helplessness that we have lost all out clout and friends and that we have to surrender ourselves to China. It is a matter of shame for our country and it is matter of greater shame for the government,” he said.

Dr. Singh, the BJP leader said, made the remarks when Mr. Vaiko met him last week demanding economic sanctions against Sri Lanka.

Mr. Sinha suggested to Mr. Vaiko to organise a rally in Tamil Nadu in which he would also participate.

In what comes as a diplomatic shocker, according to media reports, the Vice-Consul of the US Consulate in Chennai -- Maureen Chao made racist remarks on Friday (August 12) when she narrated to a group of students her experience of a train journey in India two decades ago, when she was a student herself.

According to The New Indian Express in Chennai, while addressing the Semester Abroad Programme orientation in SRM University, Maureen reportedly said, "I was on a 24-hour train trip from Delhi to Orissa. But, after 72 hours, the train still didn't reach the destination.... and my skin became dirty and dark, like the Tamilians." :bash:

The report also added that these remarks from the US diplomat was received with cheers and claps from the students, many of whom were reportedly from the northern states of India. :bash:

Chao reportedly added, "Some 20 years ago, I was a student like you and had an opportunity to do a semester abroad. I chose to come to India, fascinated by the culture and religion. I travelled across villages to understand the culture better. I was amazed at the graciousness and friendliness of the people."

Reacting to the ‘racial’ slur the US expressed regret over Chao’s comments, however, did not apologise for her comments. A statement issued said, “Miss Chao made inappropriate comment and the remark was not intended.�

Why was that sentence put there in the first place? Which state were the "North Indians" from? Maharashtra? MP? UP? West Bengal? J&K? Chhattisgarh? Are all the people in all those states white skinned or something?

Looks like the reporter was from Tamil Nadu himself/herself, and put in that sentence as an emotional reaction.

Please read the phrase carefully again and again with emphasis on the punctuations. That's what I think she meant. Having enough experience working with offshore teams I completely understand how the communication works here on both sides :lol:

And for our media, hey they got few days worth material here for debate. C'mon Nidhi, Barka, Rajdeep, Gopinath & Co., I am expecting more from you folks..

According to her story she didn't even travel to TN. Her train journey was from Delhi to Orissa. So perhaps you should be concerned about the cleanliness of the people between Delhi and Orissa.

You got it wrong... the patriotism towards the nationalism is no way less in tn comparing to other states. For kargil fund or GJ bhuj earthquake the donation collection from tn was the highest in terms of money.

the context of statehood above 1947 nationalism is under different condition... thats why i have mentioned about personal experiance. To be frank, now I dont have the same LEVEL of affinity or patriotism on the nationality like the one in school days!

You would be surprised to know how bad Americans are in communicating especially in a diversified environment. This is despite that their first language is English and they are communicating in English.

If you want to lose sleep over the lost self-respect and feel insulted because of this statement how about the explicit racist statements of our ex-CM in open? What about the explicit actions like building a wall within same city / ward like this (http://www.thehindu.com/news/states/tamil-nadu/article2266854.ece)? Did we every try to make an issue out of it with a nation (or statewide) debate? Did you ever lose sleep over a lost self-respect when it comes to such issues?

A perfect example is Uthapuram. Wasn't that wall demolished? Was not there very wide spread debate and support from all parts of TN? No wonder this will also get solved.

I am concerned about all these inequality issues, I have openly expressed it through my blog. (Though I don't want to talk about my personal blogs, but still an answer to your question regarding my stand on such issues. I can also talk to you through PM if you would like regarding the other things which I do on my part to eliminate social inequalities in and around my neighbourhood and family in TN, though i'm in early 20s- just to mention that I don't just talk in public forums but also do something meaningful on the background)

Forum, background and intention matters. If I were a diplomat I would have avoided that remark at the first place and would have been more careful. She needs a class in communication and not bashing!!

So you accept motivated mollamarithanam, mudichavukkithanam and racism if done by a person speaking your language against the sub-divisions of those that speak your language. In those scenarios I haven't seen you voice your opinions here. Why? Is it because the perpetrators belong to your "linguistic" group? But you never hesitate to point out anything outsider (a non-tamil) does against your language speaking people in this forum (even if it is difficult to prove the motivation). Are you against racism or only against racism perpetrated by folks outside your "linguistic" group?

For you language groupism might be important. Likewise for others it is nationalism, regionalism, religion, casteism. Different strokes different folks.

Above all these groups what matters is applying rational thoughts before arriving at conclusions. And that rationalism is definitely not dravidian pagutharivu. I am talking about the true rationalism :)

I am not defending them but there is a difference between them and a foreign spy.
