33 South Sixth Street is a 50 story office building located in the heart of the Minneapolis 64 square block skyway system. The building was constructed and opened in 1983 and is presently the fourth tallest building in Minneapolis.
The Minneapolis City Center component of the project consists of a retail mall. Completed in 1983 and renovated in 1993, it contains 40 retail shops, 3 restaurants as well as the largest food court in Minneapolis. There are six skyway connections entering into City Center. The project also houses the Minneapolis Marriott at City Center, a 584-room full service hotel. Finally, the project contains a 687 stall parking garage for the convenience of the office tower tenant and retail patron.

I have always liked this building from the wide sides. The narrow sides I have never liked. But for a big box it is not that bad. It could still be better though.

I find it boring. And the round (as opposed to square) columns make it lose some of its impact. 4/10

The texture of the facade is quite nice, and the colour seems to react well to sunlight. Overall it's nothing special but it seems to fit the skyline well.

I used to think that this was the biggest piece of shit MPLS had. But in the last couple years it has grown on me, a LOT. Standing under this building makes you feel so small because it is so BIG. Quite impressive, actually. The perfect symetry and simple design of this building gives to that effect. I like it.

One could say that it had a certain abstract charm, or that it distilled the forms down to their geometric essences; one could praise its uncompromising rejection of "artistically" massed skyscrapers, and laud its purity, its courage. One could; one would be an idiot. This is a big ugly block of arrogant crap.

But it does grow on you. As you'll see.

Specifics: designed by SOM - there's a big surprise - according to a late 70s / early 80s design. They built another one across the river in St. Paul. Really.

Like cheap bologna, it looks like it was simply sliced off when the developers decided thay had enough rentable space...No "heart," no imagination whatever....

The nice, shiney building with set backs in the background of the first picture looks SOO much nicer than this slab...
