An architectural model displayed at Dodger Stadium shows the $500-million makeover planned for the stadium in Chavez Ravine.
Among the renovations, planned by 2012, would be a dedicated bus lane near the stadium and two parking garages plus additional underground parking.

Dodgers owner Frank McCourt unveiled plans today for a historic makeover of the club's 275-acre Dodger Stadium site in Chavez Ravine, describing new features designed to transform the ballpark into a year-round destination for dining, shopping and recreation that will be fan- and environment-friendly.
At the same time, McCourt challenged civic leaders to follow his $500-million investment by extending bus and subway lines to the ballpark.
"The ultimate way to improve access to Dodger Stadium is public transit," McCourt said.
Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa said he would be happy to work with the Dodgers on finding ways other than driving to get people to Chavez Ravine.
"That clarion call, that challenge, I like that," Villaraigosa said. "Isn't it amazing that we built a public transportation system and it never connected to Dodger Stadium? Wouldn't it be great if we said, 'This city is going to also rectify the errors of the past and do something to change that'? I like that idea. Let's get working on it."
McCourt said that in addition to two parking garages and additional subterranean parking to replace the 2,000 spaces lost to construction, the renovations would include a dedicated bus lane running directly to a transit plaza adjacent to the stadium.
He also said he hoped local leaders would "tweak and adjust subway lines" to add a Dodger Stadium stop and provide "bus access in the interim."
City Councilman Ed Reyes, whose district includes Dodger Stadium, said the ballpark renovation "hopefully can stimulate a whole new transit system that gets us in and out of this great place."
McCourt said the Dodgers filed paperwork on Thursday morning to acquire the necessary permits for the stadium improvements and that he hoped to get approval by the start of the 2009 season. The project is scheduled to be completed in time for opening day in 2012.
Fifteen acres of the stadium's parking lot will be used to make room for the additions, resulting in the loss of about 2,000 spaces. But McCourt said there wouldn't be a net loss of parking during construction because of the extra spaces created by the reconfiguration of the roadways and parking lots.
The Dodgers have already received approval to move forward with the first phase of the project in the winter, which will be to renovate the loge level, as well as the home and visiting clubhouses. McCourt said the club is also considering installing high-definition scoreboards.
The improvements that will be made next off-season, he said, would be "comparable" in cost to those made this winter -- about $80 million.
McCourt said he wasn't concerned how the downturn in the economy might impact the returns on his sizable investment.
"Economies go up and down, they're not static," McCourt said. "We look at this thing in a very, very long-term, also generational fashion. We're not making these decisions based on what the economy is like today. We're making these decisions as huge optimists in the future of the Dodgers."
McCourt wouldn't say what else he saw in the future of the Dodger Stadium site, of which the stadium covers 16 acres and the renovations announced Thursday covering another 15. McCourt would not comment on whether he would pursue additional projects on the rest of the site and refused to say whether he would rule out residential development or the addition of an NFL stadium.
The NFL has long coveted the Chavez Ravine site.
Benn April 26th, 2008, 12:15 AM Nice to see they want to green it up a bit, the parking lot around it cuurently isn't to atractive, and it looks like they'll keep the bowl intact as is (nice to keep the classic look it has going)
LosAngelesSportsFan April 26th, 2008, 04:24 AM the MCCourts have done a great job of renovating Dodger Stadium every year. First they replaced all the seats and added box seats on the field, then this past year, they completely renovated the first level, and now this 500 million dollar renovation.
Also a very important aspect is that they are adding a Bus Transit stop right next to the stadium with a dedicated lane and everyone is trying to figure out how to extend the metro to the stadium, since that has been the major gripe of Dodger Stadium the in and out and the fact that a car was the only way in, hence some people arriving in the second and leaving in the 8th to beat traffic.

You said the magical words!!! We all want a METRO extension to Dodger Stadium,.. or a light rail. I don't know about a bus line, but it's a start.

How bout a looped extension aerial track used only for game day, with a station cliff side?
No tunneling, it would have to be quite a tall track bridge to climb the hill on a feasable grade, and overlap the streets and 110 Pasadena Fwy.
LosAngelesSportsFan April 29th, 2008, 09:46 AM seems obvious doesnt it? it would have to be quite a bridge though, there is a pretty steep hill there.
Kenni April 30th, 2008, 08:34 PM Ahhh, these bums will never make something like that happen, as long as McCourt is fishing $15.00 bucks for parking from me every time and the City is getting their share,.......alls well!

Team Owner Announces Plans for $500 Million Stadium Renovation
By Anna Scott
Los Angeles Dodgers owner Frank McCourt stood at center field of Dodger Stadium last week to announce a $500 million planned renovation of the 46-year-old ballpark.
On Thursday, April 24, McCourt was joined by Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, City Council President Eric Garcetti, First District Councilman Ed Reyes and others to discuss the upcoming makeover. The effort is expected to get underway next year and wrap up by opening day 2012, in time for the stadium's 50th anniversary.
The announcement was significant not just for the size of the project and the scale of the investment, but for the message it sends about the team's future in the historic stadium. Ever since McCourt, a Boston real estate developer, acquired the team four years ago, there had been speculation that he might one day seek to move the team and create housing on the site.
Instead, McCourt discussed an expansive vision to improve the fan experience. Plans include an upgraded entrance, greenery, restaurants, retail and sustainable features.
McCourt said he expects the renovation to make the stadium a year-round, family-friendly dining and shopping spot. Part of the goal, he said, is to encourage people to come early and stay late on game days, which in turn could help ease traffic congestion.
"We will preserve Dodger Stadium's essential charm," said McCourt, while transforming the complex into "a lifestyle destination."
Downtown leaders praised the plan.
Reyes, whose district includes Dodger Stadium, stressed the stadium's potential to complement efforts to green the Los Angeles River and other community initiatives, and to create new jobs.
"Everything that you're doing is going to be about this holistic approach, and creating change in our city," Reyes told McCourt and his wife, Dodgers President Jamie McCourt.
Central City Association President Carol Schatz added, "Dodger Stadium, from our point of view, is the northern edge of Downtown. It will be a great resource for the Downtown community."
Green Necklace
Key elements of the renovation, which is being designed by a team led by architecture and planning firms Johnson Fain and HKS, start at the park's main entrance, which will be enhanced with trees and other landscaping.
Inside stadium gates, a landscaped grand plaza beyond center field will connect to a promenade called Dodger Way. It will feature restaurants, shops and a Dodger museum.
A so-called "green necklace," a landscaped outdoor walkway on what is currently several acres of surface-level parking lots, will encircle the perimeter of the stadium and connect to Dodger Way. Two new garages will replace the 2,000 spaces in the lots.
The walkway will also connect to a large, outdoor plaza showcasing views of the Downtown skyline, the Santa Monica Bay, the Santa Monica and San Gabriel mountains and the Dodger Stadium playing field.
The project will aim for certification through the U.S. Green Building Council's LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) program, and feature sustainable elements such as recycled materials, water-saving measures and possibly solar power, said architect Scott Johnson of Johnson Fain, which is headquartered near the stadium in Chinatown.
"But the hugest thing" the design team is doing in relation to the environment, he added, "is keeping the stadium intact."
Off-Season Construction
Dodger Stadium opened in 1962, four years after Walter O'Malley moved the team to Los Angeles from Brooklyn. The 56,000-seat stadium was the key to O'Malley's vision, and established Major League Baseball on the West Coast.
O'Malley's son Peter eventually took over the team, and in the mid-1990s began exploring plans to build a football stadium in the Dodger Stadium parking lot in the effort to help return the NFL to Los Angeles. However, after initially receiving city support, momentum swung to the Coliseum as the next site for NFL football. O'Malley said the experience was part of what led him to sell the team to Fox. The company in turn unloaded the stadium and the team to McCourt.
The project team filed its city applications last week, said Johnson, and expects to obtain all the necessary approvals to begin work in the fall of 2009. Construction will unfold mostly during the off-seasons, said McCourt, and will not interfere with Dodger games.
McCourt said that the renovation is privately funded but declined to give further details about the project's budget or financing. He did, however, say that the improvements will not be reflected in ticket prices, which currently range from about $10 to $150.
"This has nothing to do with ticket prices at all. We look at it as providing more value for the ticket holder," said McCourt. "This is an opportunity to grow the business here." The project also will not increase the stadium's seating capacity, he said.
The new plans come on the heels of smaller upgrades that began when McCourt took over the Dodgers in 2004, including a recently completed $75 million overhaul of the Field Level concourse, new seats throughout the stadium and a new playing surface, new dugouts and more. Additional improvements are expected to be complete before the 2010 season.
Last season, Dodger Stadium hosted nearly 4 million fans, and officials have said they hope to hit that number in the coming years.

It was only expanded for football, and with no football team the expansion was no longer needed.

Yeah, the Angels did it for football so the Rams could play there, then changed it back when the Rams left. The Dodgers will never expand their stadium, but when it was designed it was made for the expansion.
KingmanIII January 5th, 2009, 04:32 AM It's not impossible, just unnecessary.
And also detrimental to the open-air atmosphere of baseball--just look at the Oakland Coliseum.
Also, Dodgers management has always been adamant about keeping the capacity at 56,000 throughout the history of the stadium, even after renovations.

I don't think Dodger management is so set on 56,000 as much as they're not allowed to go over that. The agreement with the neighborhood limits them to selling 56,000 tickets max. The recent renovations have actually pushed capacity over 56,000, but they don't sell more than 56,000 unless it's opening day or a playoff game.

mrakbaseball November 9th, 2009, 12:15 AM I just saw a Dodgers World Series DVD, and it was during the 1988 portion where I noticed the Oakland A's had 3 buses pick up the team on the warning track. It showed Jose Canseco boarding a bus in front of the 1st base dugout. Does this still exist? Do they have buses drive on the field after games? I thought that was weird.

They still can do that, but it was rare then and is now. The visiting players usually walk out of centerfield to the buses parked behind the fence and batter's eye. The only time the buses come on the field is if there are still a lot of fans around and they want to make sure the players get on the bus safely.

Why is it considered a classic though? I appreciate its longevity, but other than that, why is the building itself considered "classic". Is the building "classic"? Or is it just celebrated because it wasn't a Shea clone or renovated into a Camden Yards clone? Is it because it is symmetrical and doesn't have red brick and green seats? If it was located in Pittsburgh or Cleveland would it be "classic"? I think Dodger Stadium is a decent enough park, but I don't get why some circles praise it as "the best" however.
I don't hear many arguing it's the best. But several factors make it classic, its location in the heart of Los Angeles with its unique setting that still makes it feel a world away from the city, while the oldest and newest parks have always embraced an urban identity. It has been host to a slew of some of the greatest moments for one of baseball's premier franchises. It was one of the last stadiums built before the onslaught of atrocious multi-purpose venues. Its longevity has allowed it to outlive virtually every other park built in the era without any major structural issues.
But perhaps the most important factor that has makes Dodger Stadium such a classic is that it has retained its exact same form since it opened in 1962. When you see an Andre Ethier home run go into the right-field pavilion, it looks exactly the same as when Kirk Gibson did it, or even before when Ron Cey did it. Being able to see those same images brings a sense of nostalgia and allows young fans like me to connect with the past while also allowing them to share the same experiences during all the great years that my father had with the ballpark. That sense of unity and history is very rare today and you really only see that in the two other places. A new ballpark would simply not feel "Dodger" to me, so while it doesn't have all the bells and whistles of modern ballparks, no one will ever convince me Dodger Stadium is not a classic.

Fan dies after fight at Angels game
April 8, 2009 | 11:54 am
Police are searching for details about a fight at Angels Stadium on Monday night that led to the death of a Buena Park man.
About 8:45 p.m. Monday, as crowds were leaving the stadium after the Angels' opening-day game against the Oakland As, witnesses saw 27-year-old Brian Powers fighting with another man near a stairwell in the right-field pavilion, according to the Anaheim Police Department.
During the fight, witnesses said, a third man approached Powers from behind and punched him in the head, making him fall and strike his head on a concrete step. Powers was rushed to UC Irvine Medical Center, where he was pronounced brain dead around midnight Tuesday, said Anaheim Police Sgt. Rick Martinez.
"We're asking the public's help to find out what the fight was about," Martinez said.
The male suspects, who fled before police arrived, are described as being between 25-30 years old with goatees. Police are reviewing security videos that may have captured the attack. Witnesses are asked to call Anaheim police at (714) 765-1944.

It would be interesting to compare the number of violent incidents at Dodger Stadium and Angel Stadium. I would like to see actual statistics. That said, I hope the new measures that are being implemented by the LAPD and the Dodgers scale down if not completely eliminate the level of violence at Dodger Stadium. I wonder if this will have any affect on whether Los Angeles receives an NFL franchise.

Ideally, the ballpark would be moved down near chinatown in the new cornfields park. That way it would be adjacent to the chinatown stop on the gold line as well as to Union Station. also, that neighborhood has so much potential that this would be a huge boost.

The team, the land and the stadium are all managed under separate shell corporations. McCourt moved everything into 20 odd different corporations as part of his scam. His lawyers are now claiming that even if MLB takes the Dodgers away from him, he will still own the stadium and surrounding land.
And when you dig deeper, you start to realize what a total sleazebag McCourt is. Even though the team is bankrupt, the Dodgers owe another one of McCourt's shell corporations $300,000 per month for rent on the stadium and parking lots. So McCourt is owed $3.6 million per year by his own team, even though his lenders put a cap on how much income he can make from the team. "Fraud" really isn't a big enough word for what he pulled here.
Until I read about this, the whole concept of the Dodgers moving was unthinkable. Now it has to be seen as a very real possibility, to get McCourt's claws off of the team.

I simply meant out of Dodger Stadium. How far they go is up to whomever takes over the team. McCourt charges the Dodgers $300,000 per month, year round, for renting the parking lot. With 26 shell corporations floating around, I wouldn't be surprised if Dodger Stadium was also charging the team rent. This is why the team cannot meet payroll.

Nope, the closest rail station is the chinatown gold line station, which is probably less than a mile away as the crow flies, but its much further away in reality because the stadium is on a hill that is 500 feet higher in elevation than the station. there is a dedicated bus that goes from union station to the stadium every game, and carries maybe 5 - 10 % of the total attendance.

The Dodgers are being outdrawn by the Giants? Well, the Giants are in the playoffs again. They won the World Series just 2 years ago. Meanwhile, the Dodgers are still living off past achievements. You could make the argument that they haven't been relevant since the '80s. The Giants and the Angels, the Dodgers 2 main rivals have been the more successful franchises, recently. Marckymarc September 24th, 2012, 10:32 AM Why do the Dodgers need a new stadium?
They don't, of course--at least for quite awhile. The previous poster was comparing apples and oranges. Yankee Stadium was on a small plot of land with no room for expansion, additional suites, clubs or other modern amenities. Dodger Stadium has plenty of room for expansion, including more clubs, museums, restaurants and more suites. The new owners know this which is why they're going to be investing in a renovation that will make the stadium a top-tier facility that will be good for another 20 years at least.
Also, Dodger Stadium holds the history of the LA Dodgers for most of their existence, just as Fenway or Wrigley holds for their teams. The number of years it's been around (compared to Wrigley and Fenway) isn't as important as the percentage of time that the LA Dodgers have called Chavez Ravine their home--not to mention the history, Championships and players that have made Dodger Stadium an iconic ballpark.
To put it in perspective, Dodger Stadium will have had more years under its belt in 2013 than Yankee Stadium did when it was gutted and renovated in 1973. And Dodger Stadium is already 4 years older than Ebbets Field was when the Dodger move west.
Any MLB Ballpark that makes it to 50 and is still going strong is a classic ballpark by any definition.

Marckymarc November 28th, 2012, 04:16 AM They're excavating the earth under those seats to be converted to usable space: larger clubhouses, batting cages, offices, training rooms and storage.

Marckymarc November 28th, 2012, 09:39 AM What's the objective with the current work? I've read about clubhouse renovations but didn't know it required that much digging around the lower bowl.
They're adding a lot more than just larger clubhouses, weightrooms, batting cages and training rooms. There are also future plans for more bars and clubs, a Dodger hall of fame and museum, more kid areas etc..
Even if all that isn't completed this offseason it's probably more cost-effective to set up the infrastructure under the seats now, rather than doing it piecemeal season-by-season.
They're basically (to use a house analogy) creating a finished basement now. Then over time, they can add what they want into the finished space over a couple of years. The total renovations will probably be phased in over 2-3 years, just like the Fenway park reno was done.
BTW, The Dodger reno is being overseen by the same person who did the Fenway and Camden Yards reno, Janet Smith.
mrakbaseball November 28th, 2012, 09:24 PM Of course after all the work is done, capacity will probably remain at the magic number of "56,000". Some things never change.

They'll probably put everything back exactly as it was. All the seats in the stadium were replaced in 2006.

Another goal of the Guggenheim group is to make the experience for fans and players as good as it can be.
For decades, the Dodgers have had one of the worst clubhouses in professional sports. That will no longer be the case, as serious work is being done to renovate the clubhouse before the April 1, 2013 opener.
Most of the seats have been removed down the third base line to give workers access to the area from above the current clubhouse. Dodger players will be in for a nice homecoming when they open the season. And the visiting teams will finally get a batting cage, so they won't have to walk through the Dodgers' clubhouse area and use the home team batting cage.
"That may be one of the craziest things I've ever heard of," Kasten said, "and it won't be happening anymore."
The fans will also be getting a better ballpark in which to watch games and enjoy different ways to mingle with other fans.
They'll be widening the concourses and adding more restaurants and bars — "hang-out places" Kasten calls them — and there will be free wi-fi for all. Dodger Stadium is jumping headfirst into the 21st century.
"I look back to some of the things we said at our introductory news conference," Kasten said, "and I'm very pleased to observe that we've made real progress in delivering on our commitment that we made.
"We're hard at work doing all kinds of things to make this a better stadium and a better team right now, not making the fans wait years for it to happen."
Now if they want to make their fans really ecstatic, they'll come back from Nashville with another big free agent in Dodger blue.

Not particularly. Just a bunch of different angles of the same thing. The third base line looks like the first base line.
I was mostly amazed with the fact that they were giving tours with all the construction going on. When we were in the club level there was loose cement falling from above from the vibrations of equipment. Not safe. Took some pieces home though.

Dodgers to remove last 2-4 rows on each level to provide wider concourses. Some loge seats will be removed where obstructed by overhang.
A state-of-the-art Wi-Fi network and cellular antenna system to support cell-phone and internet connectivity from mobile devices. Dodgers say 1500 new data points will enable reliable wi-fi and cell service for first time.
The new HD scoreboards will be 10mm 1080p, 22% larger, and the active viewing area of both video boards will be 66% larger. Highest resolution of any MLB park. LF board restored to original hexagon shape.
A new sound system directed to minimize echoes and sound migration outside the stadium.
All restrooms will be completely renovated, many will be added with substantially more fixtures. Measures toward being energy efficient will be instituted- new water valves, flush fixtures, waterless urinals, etc.
A new retail store will be built at the Top of the Park location behind home plate.
Playground and interactive areas for children that will include life-size bobbleheads and oversized World Series rings. Located on pavilion and reserved levels.
New Field Level entry plazas and bullpen overlooks to create standing room areas with view of game.

slipperydog January 8th, 2013, 09:51 PM Any idea what the new capacity will be if they're removing 2-4 rows on each level?
Stan Kasten said he doesn't really know yet.
slipperydog January 8th, 2013, 10:38 PM Here's more detail of the stadium enhancements:
The ability of fans and media covering games at Dodger Stadium to communicate will improve as a result of the new Wi-Fi and cellular antenna system that is being installed as part of a partnership with Major League Baseball Advanced Media.
The new sound system will provide for a much more enjoyable audio experience for fans as they listen to live and recorded music and announcements before, during and after games at the stadium. Sound will be directed to each seating section, minimizing echoes and migrating sounds outside the park.
The new video screens will be the first 10mm 1080p light emitting diode (LED) displays in MLB. While the new scoreboard structures will be 22% larger, the active viewing area of both video boards will be 66% larger than before, thus providing the capability for a greater amount of video content and statistical information than ever before. Driven by a new high-definition broadcast quality control room, the scoreboards will feature the latest outdoor display technologies which will offer some of the most impressive visuals in all of sports. The original distinctive hexagonal shape which presently only exists in right field will be restored to both boards.
Two to four rows of seats will be removed from the back of the Field, Loge, Reserve and Upper Reserve levels to provide greater walking space on each concourse, as well as more wheelchair locations and “drink rails” for fans who may wish to leave their seats during games and explore the stadium.
Restrooms will be expanded, renovated and ADA compliant on the Loge, Reserve and Upper Reserve levels and in the Pavilions. There will be an average increase in fixtures of 62 per cent for women and 32 per cent for men. Family or Unisex restrooms will be created for each level at the stadium. Restrooms in the outfield will be relocated under the Pavilions which will be more convenient for fans.
The Dodgers will also be going green instituting many measures toward being energy efficient. Included in the plans are new water valves, low flush fixtures, waterless urinals, hand driers to eliminate paper waste, automatic faucets to control water flow and new power and lighting energy efficient systems.
The Dodgers also will increase the number of positions for wheelchair patrons. Each position will have a companion seat and will also be positioned so these patrons can see the game, even if someone stands up in front of them.
One of the “most fun things” among the enhancements, according to Senior VP of Planning and Development Janet Marie Smith, is the bullpen overlooks that will enable fans to socialize while watching the game from a location above the bullpens where there will be dramatic field views. Each entrance, including the center-field entrances, is being given careful attention to create better circulation and enhanced concession and retail spaces.
Playground and interactive areas for children also will be created at both the Pavilion and Reserve levels that will include life-size bobbleheads, oversized World Series rings and retired number displays.
The players will appreciate the renovation doubling the size of the footprint of the existing clubhouses, enhance their training room and home batting cage and add a batting cage for visiting teams so they won’t have to share the Dodgers’ batting cage.
The Dodgers will display many of the team’s historical items for the first time. Fans will be able to enjoy Dodger memorabilia and artifacts such as MVP awards, Cy Young awards and Gold Gloves awarded to Dodgers.
A new retail store will be built at the Top of the Park location behind home plate. This will be open daily on a regular basis along with the Top of the Park ticket office. Tours of Dodger Stadium will be conducted daily from this location.

Interesting changes...mostly good.
Some changes of note, some already mentioned, and assuming we are to take the official render at face value:
- 4 new hexagonal billboards flanking each scoreboard. Not crazy about the idea, but at least they will be themed to match the classic scoreboard shape.
- Circle-shaped ads will remain on top of the scoreboards. LED? No info yet.
- Expanded bullpens. Will they be deeper and wider? If they're wider, that means the last section of the field level seats will be slightly reduced in size. (LA Times diagram appears to show this)
- Bullpen overlook gathering areas will have billboards above them, as well as a small roof mimicking the "zig-zag" roof of the pavilions. Love the roof idea, not crazy about the billboards.
- Ivy in bullpens to be removed and replaced with blue walls
- Team shop "tents" behind the bullpens appear to be gone! YES!
- New continuous advertizing on the fascia of the pavilions replacing the smaller individual ads.
- Black batters eye screen will be replaced with a solid Dodger Blue wall with LA logo.
- Rectangular scoreboards under the main boards will be much bigger.
- Line score and BSO indicator look to be moved from main board to the board underneath.
- Clock appears to remain on top of main RF board
- ALL 5 Scoreboards will be 10mm 1080 HD, the highest resolution of any scoreboard in MLB
Now here are the two things in that render that don't jibe with what has been said by Kasten:
1. The foul territory appears to be the same as before, but he said that it will be increased by about 6 feet beyond the dugouts. I would assume this would be accomplished by removing the first row of seats (flush with the camera well in the render).
The initial render released a few days ago showed the new outfield wall scoreboards running the entire length of the pavilions, but the new render shows them the same size as before with static ads along the rest of the wall, again as before.

Marckymarc January 11th, 2013, 05:51 AM Boy, I'm so glad that they are getting rid of that filthy ivy and replacing it with something nice and artificial.
Har har.
I wonder how close that render is to the reality to be seen. I liked the "ivy" (actually trees, but whatever).
On second inspection, those yellow things I thought were ads (above the outfield wall) might be flowers. Don't really have much of an opinion on that except it would look better than the ads that were there before I suppose.
Now to the drama....12 weeks is not a lot of time to get all that work under the field level done...not to mention rebuilding the level itself. Me thinks this will go down to the wire...even Kasten himself seems to be nervous that they might not get finished on time.
I wonder what the contingency plan is in case the stadium isn't ready on time.

nice video. im excited for the changes.
What i meant by my other comment was that its a good start cause ultimately, the main problem is access. i would love a rail line obviously, but for the short term, i would settle for a dedicated lane from union station to the stadium for the express bus. guaranteed 10,000 people would use it if it was a dedicated road .

What's another $50M to these guys anyway?
ryebreadraz January 11th, 2013, 09:03 AM It will still be 56,000. That's the max they are allowed to sell per their agreement with the city so despite the stadium actually holding more than that in recent years, the effective capacity was still 56,000 (they made the occasional exception to sell more tickets like on opening day and the playoffs). Even when they remove some seats for the concourses, it will still hold 56,000.
will101 January 11th, 2013, 04:46 PM I wonder what the contingency plan is in case the stadium isn't ready on time.
The opening games, April 1-2-3, are against the Giants. It probably wouldn't be that hard to swap that series up to The Phone Booth, in return for their first scheduled visit here on May 3-4-5. But if they do that, the Dodgers will have 18 consecutive home games, from April 26 to May 15.
And if they still aren't finished with the construction, the next home series is a weekender against the Pirates on April 5-6-7. If they needed to swap that one, the probable dates would be June 14-15-16, with a day off before they play at Yankee Stadium on June 18th.
After the Pirates, the Dodgers are on the road to San Diego and Phoenix until April 15th. (Boy, what a rough travel schedule!) So swapping those two series is not ideal, but doable without great hardship.

slipperydog February 19th, 2013, 07:58 AM Kasten outlines Dodgers clubhouse renovations
GLENDALE, Ariz. -- After briefing the team on the ongoing renovations of the Dodger Stadium clubhouse, club president Stan Kasten on Monday provided the media with an update too.
"We knew it was the world's worst clubhouse," said Kasten. "I said to Sandy [Koufax], 'It was substandard in your day,' and it hadn't been fixed since."
Well, it's being fixed now. Displaying overlay blueprints, Kasten explained that the home clubhouse will be "almost twice the square footage" of the previous locker room area, accomplished by excavating a second level. That was necessary because the original design of the stadium was set in a natural bowl against the hillside, making access from outside the stadium impossible.
The new facility will have a bigger trainer's room, weight room, aqua area, interview room and conference room. There will be a kitchen with a chef and nutritionist, rather than having meals catered from outside vendors. There will be a "quiet room," although nobody's really sure what that's about.
Two batting cages will be under the new clubhouse and, for the first time in stadium history, the visiting team will have a separate batting cage. Previously, visiting players had to walk through the home clubhouse area to access the batting cage and weight room.
"That's what I'm most excited about," said manager Don Mattingly. "The other team doesn't walk through our clubhouse. That was really weird. We came in with New York in '04 and went to the cage and, where are we? In their locker room? That's not a good situation."
Kasten said the first stab at renovation plans were expanded at the direction of chairman Mark Walter.
"He said to make it bigger," said Kasten. "He wanted it more like your favorite health club, a place where they like to work out. We want to provide a facility with the best chance to extend their careers. Mark was the real motivator.
"The architects tell me it's the largest in the Major Leagues. The latest, the newest, the most modern equipment."
Kasten said the concrete has been poured to put the field level back together, and he insists "all the important stuff" will be done by Opening Day.

That pic reminds me of when they installed the first TV style board there in 1980. The Dodgers were hosting the All Star game that year, and they wanted their new toy to be ready to show off. A few days before All Star game, the Giants were down there, and back then the games in LA were among the few that were televised in the Bay Area. The tech guys had been fiddling with the board all day and into the night, and since the game was kind of dull the TV guys would occasionally show their progress. There were several shots that looked like this for a minute or so, then it would go dark again. Finally, around the sixth or seventh inning they tried again, and suddenly we had a picture. The place went nuts. It wasn't perfect, and definitely needed adjustments, but it was obvious that here was something new and interesting.

why would it be a joke? the Kings draw extremely well (sold out every game for a few years now) and the Ducks are now selling out as they are winning.
That game would be a great showcase of west coast hockey, although i think they would have it between the Kings and an original 6 team to draw east coast viewers.
Darloeye March 14th, 2013, 01:44 AM Should be good to see a game here. Think it might help hockey grow having it in Dodger Stadium and out of the bigger hockey markets.

IF they are going to do the Winter Classic in LA, I would think either the Coliseum or Rose Bowl would be a better choice. Better sightlines for hockey than a baseball park in my opinion.

The Dodger Stadium Express will be back this season, once again offering free bus service between Los Angeles Union Station and the ballpark for those holding tickets to the game. And there's a wrinkle: in cooperation with the city of Los Angeles, there is expected to be a dedicated bus lane near the stadium this year to speed up the bus trips.

Marckymarc March 25th, 2013, 07:20 AM Definitely looks like those are flower planter boxes being attached to the facade of the bleachers. Cool subtle touch to have the zig-zag roof motif on the front. Will look better than the billboards previously there.
Also cool that those 2 small rectangular ads on top of each of the main boards are gone.
And do I spy "welcome" painted in red in different languages on the dugout roofs? Looks like the one on the left is 'Bienvenidos" and some language I can't make out on the right.
The new scoreboard-mimicing billboards flanking the big boards don't look as bad as I thought--again, it's nice that they embrace the semi-iconic shape of the original scoreboards.

Actually, that distinction goes to Metropolitan Stadium in Minnesota, which opened in the 1950s and began hosting the Twins in 1961.

Chavez Ravine is an area in Sulfir Canyon that is the current site of Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles, California.
It was named after Julian Chavez, a Los Angeles Councilman in the 19th century.
The land for Dodger Stadium was purchased from local owners/inhabitants in the early 1950s by the City of Los Angeles using eminent domain with funds from the Federal Housing Act of 1949. The city had planned to develop the Elysian Park Heights public housing project which included two dozen 13-story buildings and more than 160 two-story townhouses, in addition to newly rebuilt playgrounds and schools.
Before construction could begin, the local political climate changed greatly when Norris Poulson was elected mayor of Los Angeles in 1953. Proposed public housing projects like Elysian Park Heights lost most of their support. Following protracted negotiations, the City of Los Angeles was able to purchase the Chavez Ravine property back from the Federal Housing Authority at a drastically reduced price, with the stipulation that the land be used for a public purpose. It wasn't until the baseball referendum Taxpayers Committee for Yes on Baseball, which was approved by Los Angeles voters on June 3, 1958 that the Dodgers were able to acquire 352 acres (1.42 km²) of Chavez Ravine from the City of Los Angeles. (The Dodgers, from 1958 to 1961, played their home games at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.)
Los Angeles-based author Mike Davis, in his controversial, often polemical history of the city, City of Quartz, describes the process of gradually convincing Chavez Ravine homeowners to sell. In his book Davis asserts that with nearly all of the original Spanish-speaking homeowners initially unwilling to sell, "developers" representing the city and its public housing authority resorted to offering immediate cash payments, distributed through their Spanish-speaking agents. Once the first sales had been completed, it is said that remaining homeowners were offered lesser amounts of money, some speculate to create a community panic of not receiving fair compensation, or of being left as one of the few holdouts. Some residents continued to hold out, despite the pressure being placed upon them by such "developers," resulting in the Battle of Chavez Ravine, an unsuccessful ten-year struggle by a small number of remaining residents of Chavez Ravine to maintain control of their property, after the substantial majority of the property had been transferred to public ownership, during the period in which the city intended to use the land for the Elysian Park Heights public housing project.
In the end, the project died. A few years later, the city made the controversial decision to trade the land to the Brooklyn Dodgers and their owner Walter O'Malley, in exchange for land around the minor league park Wrigley Field, in a move to provide incentives for a migration to Los Angeles.[2]
Many cities had been subsidizing sports stadiums in an effort to bring prestige to their cities, and Los Angeles was no exception in that the city provided the land on which Dodger Stadium was built as such a subsidy. But in another sense Dodger Stadium is a very major exception to what occurred in other cities (such as San Francisco) in that construction of Dodger Stadium was financed almost entirely by the Dodgers' private funds, not public revenues. With Chavez Ravine slated to become the site of the new Dodger Stadium, the tiny number of remaining members of the Chavez Ravine community were physically forced to relocate, although they were compensated for their properties at fair market valuations. While some had initially left the neighborhood, voluntarily or involuntarily through either the use of eminent domain or condemnation, a number (quite a small number after about 1954) stayed until the end. Eventually the sheriff's department went in with bulldozers and armed men. A few property holders in the area had actually managed to avoid eminent domain proceedings and they were finally bought out by O'Malley. The final holdout eventually accepted the city's offer of $10,500 for his former home. The homes and streets were razed, the larger community having been destroyed years before in the public housing effort. Most people who lived there were pushed out by force, and had no where else to live.

carnifex2005 March 30th, 2013, 09:47 AM Still can't believe that the opposing team had to go through the old LA Dodger clubhouse to get to the practice batting cage for all those years. This renovation was decades overdue.
Kenni March 30th, 2013, 06:12 PM I was at the game last night. The new hi def screens didn't display as they they are shown above until the 3rd inning. I don't now if it was by design or they still had some bugs to fix.
For the first 3 innings they looked like this:
http://mlblogsdodgersphotog.files.wordpress.com/2013/03/032913js184.jpg?w=555&h=369
http://mlblogsdodgersphotog.files.wordpress.com/2013/03/032913js186.jpg?w=555&h=369
Then the splendor of the new design came through finally and what a change!!!! The scoreboard becomes the second screen when displaying video or the fan cam, so if you were used to just looking to the direction of Dodger Vision, now your neck will get a nice exercise as both screens display different fan cam shots or vid, then the right one goes back to being a scoreboard.
I was late buying my tickets so I ended up at the top deck, they've made little plazas at the entrance of the reserve levels and top deck with a merchandise store at each and ticket booth...very clever...they kept the classic design in every detail. The plazas have huge bobble heads or giant retired numbers.
I noticed a few minor details unfinished, like gardening here and there (we all know that DS has probably the most greenery in the majors), very small construction details.
The wait for the concessions in the Top Deck was still quite a wait, but the attendant took it upon himself as I got to the counter to apologize and explain that they were short staffed up there and that it would get much better, and implied that things were much better at the lower levels.
When you come in and when you leave, all employees at the gates or the mini plazas greet you, or say "Thank you for coming, please come again".
The new bathrooms are huge and spacious, but I didn't hear the game being broadcast live as they were in the past, all you Dodger fans know we used to be in he bathroom doing our business and hear Vin Scully call the game as we were doing so. Maybe they still need to wire that, I don't know. No tv screens by the concessions either (Top Deck at least) but I suspect they just simply didn't have time to put them back up. I'm sure the Field, Loge and Reserve levels were better. The flashing strobe lights for home runs and at the end of a win were not used either, maybe another thing they didn't get to.

A new post about Dodger Stadium traffic on County Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky's website really buries the lead: the Department of Transportation is pro-monorail. Well, at least one guy is. Asked for a long-term solution to the perennial problem of traffic before and after Dodger games, Aram Sahakian replied "my personal recommendation would be a monorail." The rest of the post deals with the Dodger Stadium Express, the rather more quotidian bus that runs between Union Station and Chavez Ravine, and its dedicated lane on Sunset. Ridership is up on the express bus, but traffic has still been a nightmare on game days. To improve matters, Sahakian has proposed letting carpoolers use the bus lane, and using the city's newly-synced traffic lights to help out before every home game (as they did on opening day). And then we should totally build a monorail.

So which part(s) of the parking lot does McCourt still own? And where are they talking about putting in a football stadium?

McCourt retained half ownership of the parking lots. It's unclear how much say he would have in the development of the lots or where the stadium would go.

A Monorail would be fantastic, and with it, I say build the NFL stadium up there too.

will101 April 23rd, 2013, 04:50 AM Nice clear day. I can remember going to a game, and being unable to see downtown from the stadium.
