View Full Version : ART DECO in Singapore
redstone November 16th, 2003, 02:39 PM Although we do not have amazing Art Deco skyscrapers all around like NYC ,we do have hundreds of lowrise Art Deco buildings and thousands of Art Deco shophouses.
The most amazing Artd Deco building is non other than the Parkview Square at 600 North bridge Road:
The guard only allowed me to take two shots.

redstone November 17th, 2003, 11:55 AM Another Art Deco masterpiece ,the Singapore Godown at Tagore Lane:

http://www.singaporegodown.com.sg/Shared/Singapore-Godown-Building-M.jpg
MAKING FIRST IMPRESSIONS COUNT
In the past, warehouses have always been utilitarian buildings, little more than plain boxes to contain goods. However, Singapore Godown is a development that revolutionises the warehousing tradition in both aesthetics and function. In fact, its unassuming name belies the multitude of modern facilities this building has to offer.
For any organisation wishing to streamline its office and warehouse facilities, Singapore Godown represents the ideal integrated working environment.
A harmonious collaboration between East and West, the building's interior was efficiently planned by RDC Architects of Singapore to complement the striking Art Deco exterior designed by Gertler & Wente Architects of New York.
An approach to the building is greeted by its classic Art Deco architecture. The double volume entrance driveway creates a sense of expectation that is heightened by the intricate porte cochére. This is a building with presence, monumental in its proportions and timeless in its style.
From the imported granite of the facade to the designer bathroom fittings, every detail has been carefully selected to enhance the building's overall quality and style.
A luxurious office block, with its own separate handicap-accessible foyer leading to a grand lift lobby, fronts the building. Front offices worthy of corporate headquarters offer prime positions to businesses seeking a high public profile.
http://www.singaporegodown.com.sg/Shared/Specifications-Image.jpg
Side elevation.
THE ULTIMATE IN FUNCTIONAL SPACE
Although this building has been clearly designed with a high regard for aesthetics, function has not been neglected. Flexible column grids of 11.5 metres x 9.6 metres allow single- and multi-tenants the freedom to tailor office space according to their requirements.
Throughout the office block, fully installed air-conditioning maintains optimum working conditions, while a series of surge arresters protect electrical equipment should lightning strike. Tenants enjoy the convenience of 24-hour usage of their premises through a card access system, and the confidence of manned security with closed circuit TV.
Separate office and cargo entrances ensure a smooth and efficient traffic flow by channelling traffic into two streams. This allows office and warehouse areas to operate side by side, with neither one compromising the other. Each floor is serviced by a comprehensive lift system comprising two passenger lifts in the office area, and one service lift and four goods lifts in the warehouse area.
The expansive warehouse area maximises useable space with an extra-wide column span and a lofty ceiling height of 6 metres. A fully installed mechanical ventilation system is in place, as well as provision for air-conditioning, if required.
On the ground floor, eight loading/unloading bays with dock levellers are capable of handling even 45 ft. and high cube containers with ease. Under optimal conditions, a standard 40 ft. container can be unloaded, on average, within a mere 45 minutes. Far-sighted provision has also been made for the floor-to-floor conveyance of goods. The first floor has a loading capacity of 20 KN/sq. m., while the second to fourth storeys support up to 15 KN/sq. m

Kit November 20th, 2003, 01:44 PM I really detest Parkview Square the first time I saw it when I was back in Singapore last year. After seeing the pics posted here, I'm having second thoughts. The open plaza is a nice touch. How many office developments even bother to include open plazas in their scheme? Not many. The pic shown here makes the plaza looks surreal with its surrounding green context.
Hope to see more of these open plazas in town. Equipe them as Wifi hotspots. Who says work have to be done in the office?
redstone November 20th, 2003, 02:31 PM Hi ,Kit ,welcome!
If you want to see amazing renderings of the plaza square and construction photos ,try the PowerPoint link. There are very nice drawings of the plaza by James Adams ,renderings of the whole project and some engineering info.
huaiwei November 20th, 2003, 04:35 PM Cool! Looks like we have another Singaporean in our midst!! Welcome from me too!! :D
I actually found that building too "dark and gloomy" when it was still being built, and in a sense, even after its completion, but that in itself does lend a sense of mystery about it. And since it was used as the mysterious casino HQ on "coral island" in "unbeatables 3", it does seem even more out of this world! :D

As for the space you mentioned, Im not sure if you are referring to the surrounding empty space. If so, that space was apparantly meant for other uses by other deelopers? But from the recent plans to inject life into the Bugis Area, it seems like they may actually use the space for circuses or something! :colgate:

Perhaps all S'pore forumers could meet sometime to go there together ,armed with a very good digital camera ,if possible.;)
I've seen the Parkview Square all lit up on like 10 seperate occasions. All but 3 had I been in close range enough to spot those statues near the roof.Once ,I was cruising at Rochor Road ,at 11pm.That's the nearest I've been to the lit-up PVS.
The lights would slowly light up at 7pm.By 7.30 or so ,I would be 100% lit up.
Try going there on working days ,the lights would be at full-blast.

huaiwei November 23rd, 2003, 11:33 AM Talking about the Railway Station, there has been rumours that the man behind those scuptures were the same as the one who did those on the Supreme Court. But I think it was more or less proven false by a local TV production, whereby the surviving daughter of that scupture said it wasent his father's style, and that he never mentioned it to her?

The URA also said that the Waterboat Office is Art Deco ,but it is built in 1919 ,before the Art Deco 'Revolution'. I think i know which ones you talking about. I do have them photographed in s.com. But they are actually quite "clean" when it comes to adding "decoration" to the buildings. Check out the mid 1990 variety of HDB blocks, in particular in Bishan. One particular batch in Bedok reservoir was particularly flamboyant in this. ;)

Actually the main structure (the tower) of Cathay Building isn't Art Deco but its podium facade are.
Art Deco actually derived from stylized Egyptian art - the discovery of King Tut's tomb in the Valley of the Kings in the 20s sparked the Art Deco craze which gives us this magnificent art form. ;)

Cliff December 12th, 2003, 08:09 AM "Style Definition
Art Nouveau is a style with roots in the Arts & Crafts Movement of the late 19th century. It replaces traditional forms and lines with naturalistic ones, generally based on organic structures as plants, bones, or crystal formations. Designs in this style are highly original and idiosyncratic, but a few common elements can be listed including curving lines, elegant symmetries, and complex shapes."
from S.com
Is Peninsula Plaza and Meritus Mandarin considered as Art Nouveau?
I'm quite sure than Peninsula Plaza is, just look at the amazing base!!!!
redstone December 12th, 2003, 09:15 AM Looks like the WTC!

This is the clock tower of the Anglo-Chinese School (Barker Road). It was built in 1950 in the Art Deco style.
In recent years ,it was rebuilt and opened this year.
The new design is very similliar to the original one.The new design sports a more prominent Art Deco design ,is bolder and have lines running diagonally down the sides of the tower. The front façade of the new school building also has Art Deco features ,like columnar deco and a streamlined look.

That's "Fred & Ginger" by Frank Gehry in Prague, named after Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers, two movie stars frequently paired in black & white American movies of the 1930s :) They were the perfect dancing couple! I readily admit I love this building too!:banana::banana::banana::banana:
I'm sure there are lots of Art Nouveau buildings in Singapore--in fact, I've seen some in other threads. :) So please get together for that photo shoot session soon and show them to me, OK?
EDIT: Actually I'm by no means convinced that the buildings depicted in this thread are in the Art Nouveau style of architecture. :angel1:

So I fully understand your predicament. :) And I've got lots of patience! :angel1: Hmm...Im complaining because its not a normal occurance for such intense rain here actually. It was only in the past 5 years of so when we experienced the hottest weather on record, and one of the highest amount of rainfall ever measured for decades. It dosent feel good at all to be cooped up at home when I am having my vacation, which would have been better spent skyscraper hunting! :bash: ;)
Anyway, I actually doubt that we have that many Art Nouveau buildings here, if I were to interpret the definition correctly. We have yet to have those extreme forms in many of our key buildings? I would agree, thou, that the National Library bui;ding is probably a good candidate for this category! ;)
redstone December 21st, 2003, 08:57 AM I just went to Tiong Bahru to pay the Art Deco flats a visit ,and I counted almost 8 different types of designs ,and ranges from between two to five storeys tall.

RafflesCity February 15th, 2004, 05:53 AM Hmm..when I saw the building in real life, Chinese didnt spring to my mind, it had a more Hindu-like feel to it. In any case there is a very Oriental feel to it but I cant pinpoint any specific theme.

I had no idea. Well, then I would consider Parkview as by far the more successful retro art deco building of the two. It really goes back to the period. Grandview, on the other hand, is a modern version of the style--it takes some elements & incorporates them.

Changi Prison is world famous yet also very scary for some reason...
huaiwei February 21st, 2004, 03:37 PM The original plan was to completey tear up the existing prison complex and build a new one on its site.....after some protest, they decided to keep that wall........

:bleep: :bleep: :bleep: The idea of demolishing ALL the prison complexes there and consolidating into one complex is partly due to security issues, as well as to optimise landuse. If they are to demolish two of the complexes and relocate there, while still keeping Changi Prison, then what do you think Changi Prison should be used for? And in this case, one big reason for embarking on the project at all will be deminished too, rite?
As far as I am concerned, keeping the wall is far better then keeping nothing at all, which was the original plan.

redstone March 15th, 2004, 07:19 AM The sad thing is that not many S'poreans are aware of their existance.
Monkey March 15th, 2004, 08:30 AM That IS sad, redstone! :( Alas it can be said of many other parts of the world as well ... people are not well aware of their environment ... and buildings and building styles are at the bottom of the list.
You were very good to bring us this last series of pictures--thank you! :)
redstone March 16th, 2004, 01:09 AM The good thing is that they are now gazetted for conservation ,and the media reports made more people aware of them.:D
They are the first housing estate in Singapore.:D
RafflesCity March 16th, 2004, 01:16 AM Thats good. I myself am also getting interested in these historical pieces and lately there have been more nice books published on architecture in Singapore. Previously there was none. I guess as Singapore matures as a nation (it is only 39 years old), it begins to embrace its history instead of running blindly away from it.
redstone March 16th, 2004, 01:54 AM More info found:
The Art Deco blocks comprises 931 units built in 1936 by the Singapore Improvement Trust.
Bounded by Tiong Bahru Road ,Seng Poh Road ,Tiong Poh Road ,Yong Siak Street ,Guan Chuan Street ,Chay Yan Street and the Central Expressway.
The design emphasis in creating small neighborhoods and maximum privacy between individual homes, the need to promote health and to improve security through visibility and public surveillance. The design of the block is also influenced by local Architectural language such as the Straits Settlements’ shop-house typology. The layout is based on a modified shop-house plan with court-yard as air/light well, back lane and spiral staircases.
Those blocks appeared in Sean Wong's Music Video "A Place In My Heart" ,the NDP 2003 Theme Song.
Monkey March 16th, 2004, 03:33 AM Fabulous, redstone! :okay:
Thanks for doing further research on this complex! :) That paragraph you quote about "creating small neighborhoods and maximum privacy ... " shows how thoughtful planning for an entire ensemble of similar (but not identical!) buildings can bring about a functioning and long-term viable living space and a real sense of neighborhood for many people. I'm so glad the Singapore authorities recognize what an urban jewel they have here and decided to save it from the bulldozers! :angel1:

Monkey March 17th, 2004, 10:06 AM Parkview Square is one of the most glorious Art Deco highrises I know. :okay: It's one of my all time favorites ... I don't know where the pictures come from, I just LOVE the place!
redstone March 17th, 2004, 10:15 AM The building could have been taller ,and the complex could have been more vast.
There is a height restriction there ,which also affects The Gateway and the Singapore Flyer.
There is an 'unofficial' width restriction ,caused directly by The Gateway. The building's developers ,Chyau Fwu Dev ,is a HK company. The sharp edges of the Gateway is considered 'inauspicious' and 'unlucky' ,especially if it is pointing in your building's direction.
Had it been in the Financial District ,I cannot imagine what it would look like! The site of the Afro-Asia Building - a lowrise would be a good place for it.The plot is rather wide.
redstone March 17th, 2004, 10:22 AM Details of ornaments:
There are 8 8m-tall gargoyles (statues of Greek men) holding up spheres. They are backed by intricate decorative Art Deco grilles.
There are several 'gargoyles' on the building ,including 6 holding up 2 giant "dishes" on the two corners of the concourse ,facing North Bridge Road.
There are 44 6m tall "cobbles" ,8 levels of streamlined Art Deco accent bends.
The "dishes" are actually giant floodlights that lights up the building's exterior at night.
Perhaps someone can take detailed shots of the building's ornaments since I do not have a good camera.:D

redstone March 17th, 2004, 01:59 PM All those are CGI-ed in.

2000 URA ARCHITECTURAL HERITAGE AWARDS - NO. 9 BRAS BASAH ROAD
Owner:
Hotel Rendezvous Pte Ltd
Architect:
SAA Partnership Pte Ltd
Engineer:
Tan Ee Ping & Partners
Contractor:
Obayashi Corporation
The project involves the restoration of 9 three-storey Art Deco shophouses and the construction of a new 11-storey building at the rear. The design of the new building was inspired by the conservation shophouses, whose lively decorative features were retained and restored. Between the old and the new, an open courtyard serves as a focal point, sharing the same axial alignment as the existing splayed corner entrance. Crowning the hotel is a billboard resembling that displayed on the shophouse roofs in the 1960s to the 1980s. The balanced blend of old and new adds architectural richness and a dash of colour to the neighbourhood.
RafflesCity March 18th, 2004, 12:19 PM That is one of the most beautiful buildings on Orchard Road.
