Hi all! I am seeking advice and suggestions on the facilities needed for the bird corner at Link Hotel. As Tiong Bahru has a beautiful heritage and the bird corner is a big part of this heritage, we want to contribute to its legacy by adding facilities that the community need and feel will blend into the neighbourhood. I understand that the coffee shop there used to provide the tables and chairs. One suggestion I received was to do a stone/metal U-shaped benches around the bird corner. And of course, shelter for our precious feathered friends.

Is that the site where there used to be a temple which was demolished?

I noted that something is being built there now.

Hi RC. I think you are referring to the new hotel site. The bird corner is actually the original one at the corner of Link Hotel, as in the map below.

This was formerly known as Tiong Bahru Bird Arena. According to the residents of Tiong Bahru, this is the first bird corner in Singapore.

And before anyone asks, I am from Link Hotel and I love Tiong Bahru! :)

In order for the bird corner to be suitable for the bird enthusiasts around the area, I hope to get feedback on what is required to revive the corner and subsequently propose it to the management.

I read in a book how this vistor was quite disappointed when he came back to Singapore to find the former bird corner gone. It was actually featured in the tourist guides. I am sure STB would be supportive of this idea to revive the area.

You can't simply recreate something which has taken generations to establish itself and expect it to stay the same

I received feedback from the residents on needing chairs, lights, and signages. At the moment, they have moved to the garden near Blk 4A. Usually, they go there on Sundays mornings.

By the way, there wil be a bird-singing competition this Sunday at Bedok. :)

I fear it might be near impossible to revive the bird area. The building is now gentrified by the hotel so the dynamics of the place has changed. Instead of a coffee shop, you have the Akira japanese restaurant at one end and some swanky fusion food place further down - hardly the kind of establishments bird watching retirees frequent.
