Screw NBA!!!!

A decade or so, and Euroleage will give a very serious fight, which NBA might just well loose.

Will Lithuania attempt to get teams into the Kontinental Hockey League? Minsk and Riga both will have sides.

Lithuania has bigger populations and better business backing that Riga and Minsk in theory.

In terms of competition for elite talent? Shit, I wouldn't be surprised at all.

They don't play professionally. Maybe the Russian 'KHL' may eventually have a team in LT and then it would be in Vilniuas in any case. The floor space is technically there if you had to do it. If it is anything like Madison Sq. Gardens you just reduce the capacity by 2 or 3 thousands of the hoops stadium capacity. All the seats around the floor are taken away.

I doubt it, though. Too small a population to support pro hockey on top of pro hoops.

This currency board collapse will certainly slow things down in the Baltics for a while on top of the other shit happening.

It is not that difficult to do in anycase if ever there was a need. They did it recently at an open air baseball stadium in Chicago.

You basically need the space, the boards and perspex surrounding the playing surface and refridgeration pipes which go in the surface which you then flood with water, leave overnight and hey presto, instant hockey arena.

And ther is also a thread called "Lithuania - Stadiums and arena development news" (http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=427678) But it is quite old.

Exchange of Kaunas arena facade is dark gray

E. Miliūnas: We decided that the more effectively will be the palace facades sport to consider the building site. Structure is dominant in the city, the valley of the Nemunas. Are very large spaces and small intimate spaces of relations problem.

It is made in advance. The selection of the architectural way, it was clear that to compete with the city would be a mistake. Building must be unified with the environment. Initially imagined as a sports palace oval volume. But after the "Akropolis" Parking appearance has become clear that in the new architecture of a large pool in one place Kaunas disturb the new parts of the city and the historical balance. Arena began its consideration of the possibility of polygonal shape. Nine - a dynamic number. Polygonal form should be more commonality with the city buildings.

Sports palaces at the beginning of the design thought about covering the facade of the network - as the skin. Skin - a very complex organism. Earnestly carry out such a decision was very difficult, and then began to appear that this is only a "veil" is intended to hide the errors. The network did not find any justification, he does not do anything and are just banal "decoration." We believe that the essence of sports palaces - of terrace building. We decided that the better the quality of technical and engineering to solve problems, concentrate on the static nature of the structural, rather than artificially embellish. Kaunas character similar to the functionalist aesthetic contained Bauhaus style.

Terraces komponuoti Sports Court should be like a lamp illuminating the environment, helping to see the city. We believe that the building will be open, and terraces within spaces communicating with the city. Once inside visitors to the island to feel the continuity of the park, and the open terraces of the engineering equipment will encourage aesthetic look for the process. For example, the individual functions of the flag away, we offer an innovative deal - the installation of the glass surface with the screen, the background of the city.

Architect George Mačiūnas promoting a "useful" arts, to all the natural processes of human life into a beautiful and playful. Beautiful processes are adequate and beautiful.

Other important aspects: the square of the water, inputs, quay facilities, farm yard, a restaurant, a concert of chamber exposure, exhibition hall, facing the Old Town and the Neman. In the farm yard, we offer integrated baikerių meeting places where they can choose to communicate, build motorcycles. Next to open will be a basketball playground. Introduce visitors to the city with new construction, the water provides an opportunity to build infobox'ą.

J. Kančienė: Are open stairs neapledės winter?

E. Miliūnas: We look for such solutions that neapledėtų.

J. Bučas: How can you come to the house?

E. Miliūnas: You can be reach by road via two bridges.

J. Bučas: What is the width of the terrace, or it will be planted?

E. Miliūnas: terrace width of 56.2, and it will not be planted.

E. Barzdžiukas: What are the facade of the concept of color?

E. Miliūnas: Using high quality materials and šviesintą glass. We reject silicone compounds, only the first level of the building designed berėmio glass wall display cases. Facade of glass, in some places in the glass, front cover of G / B plates. Concrete and construction of the windows are painted dark gray.

N. Valatkevičius: Do different color statement indicates the type of glass?

E. Miliūnas: Yes.

J. Kančienė: Is the terrace of the lobby or the hall?

E. Miliūnas: They are separated but connected network.

V. Merkevičius: Please comment on the cuts.

E. Miliūnas: the sixth level of the ventilation equipment, the other five levels for the audience.

V. Stauskas: What is the idea of lighting?

E. Miliūnas: Night matysis inside the procedure. When they expire, will remain the only decorative lighting.

R. Raslavičius: What are the main hall denginio material?

E. Miliūnas: Fifth facade-polymer roof finish with a small sliding. This web coating.

G.Šinkūnas: Do no Kaunas mark with the creation of this object?

E. Miliūnas: None. Sports Palace, the active form is not claiming.

G.Šinkūnas: How to work at the main subject of the work on time?

E. Miliūnas: Regardless of the main events arena in time to work on a restaurant, a chamber concert and exhibition halls.

V. Stauskas: As with the dock?

E. Miliūnas: We offer the Acropolis Parking wharf for small boats and large vessels - the Nemunas wharf.

The most interesting comments:

S. Juska: It was very interesting for the construction of such an important subject. Good architecture. I think the facade - the copyright issue. I wish you success.

J. Kančienė: Finally come to Kaunas to open up to the Neman. Urban life is close to the river, and with such force that are left to enjoy. The authors selected the concept of self-declared, and into the surrounding environment - welcome. I think society will comment on the modest aesthetic, with sąšaukos Akropolis garage. Maybe it should be about a fifth facade, and an open staircase on the adaptation to our climatic conditions. Maybe a roof would be green grass.

V. Merkevičius: I agree with the authors the idea of collective solutions to change the facades of the perforated sheets of glass into the aluminum. Improve the visual relationship with the environment. The idea of the scenery correct. I suggest searching for Arena ženkliškumo "facade of speech and reject opportunities to play the light - the color, lasers, etc.

J. Minkevičius: Sports and the local Chamber of volume change can no longer. This is done by the best functional and aesthetic point of view. From the opening images of the building opens up new dimensions and possibilities. A good decision. The final result will depend on the construction quality.

R. Raslavičius: I think that the idea of a new right - better than the aesthetics of veil. Niche, and the open terraces of the concept - the game depth - and help give the building to the face (especially on high volume).

G. Balcytis: The most important - the concept that the building of a new survey points. But the Palace of Sports, as is currently the most important building in the city of both volume and importance, should the city and enrich. It is likely that the facades of the acceptance of the idea, at least to be positive for the idea. Among the "Akropolis" sports palace garage and aesthetics should be great distinction. OK, that emphasizes the closeness of the internal spaces of the River.

J. Bučas writes: The author is fully aware of the object and its local meaning. This is not the only sports and entertainment arena, but also the unique landscape regykla enabling an overview of the most beautiful place in the urban landscape - the valley of the Nemunas and its historical, architectural and urban values.
The sense of importance for the construction of the building. Building at an impressive volume, volume, size, but the architectural solution, a good orientation and localization. Its high quality architecture. This item will be a logic of its own, and the meaning of architectural quality, in addition to the declarations and artificial embellishments. I think it will become gyvensiantiems our heritage, the new Kaunas center mark.

End:

E. Miliūnas: The contest is to select the manufacturer of facades. Go to Germany to consult with the constructor.

I am personally not satisfied with the new, cheaper facade Kaunas Arena, I disappointed of Arena Architects E. Miliūnas. Older facade is more expensive but more beautiful!

Kaunas most likely to host Eurobasket 2011 finals (http://www.lithuaniabasketball.com/news-137-kaunas-most-likely-to-host-eurobasket-2011-finals.html)

The FIBA Europe Genral Secretary Nar Zanolin mentioned the venue for the Eurobasket 2011 finals publically for the first time. Kaunas is the first option as the arena that is being built there at the moment will have the biggest capacity of all the venues and will be able to house up to 14 500 spectators.

The only condition that Mr.Zanolin has set is the time of completion. If the arena isn't finished by the end of 2010, the final matches of the tournament will take place in Vilnius instead.

The FIBA Europe General Secretary is aware of the problems that the organizers are facing. The funding from the European Union funds weren't transferred on schedule, but they've already reached Vilnius. Mr.Zanolin joked, that the 100 kilometers that separate Vilnius and Kaunas isn't much of a distance and hopes for smoother development of events.

The Lithuanian Basketball Federation (LKF) President Vladas Garastas wasn't as open as his counterpart.

"We have to finish the arena first. In 2005 we signed a contract for organizing Eurobasket 2011, but what do we have after this period? Only arenas in Vilnius, Siauliai and Panevezys are built. There are still three venues remaining, so we'll have to do half of the work in one and half years," said Garastas.

Aiwa
February 23rd, 2010, 10:52 AM
No, they'r not, the main thing for the architect was to make an atmosphere like it is Kaunas Sports Hall, and to make that he made the seats as close as possible to court. Closer would be against the FIBA rules. So it can not be possible closer. And about shallowness, it is trully shallow, but I don't think it will make any difficulties to spectators. Never the less, Zalgiris fans support their team standing ;)

Now they're finishing all the "inside" jobs, and the visible changes will be seen in April. And, I really really hope, it will continue until opening. Right now, sharp-eyed users can see blocks of glass in 4-5 floor, I think.

[April Fools Joke.]

Bad news, folks.

Žalgiris Arena will not get any money until next year
2010.03.31 16:41
kaunoarena.info (http://www.sailingscuttlebutt.com/blog/uploaded_images/aprilfoolsday9-785233.gif)
According to the sources of lrytas.lt, the government of Lithuania decided not to give any money for Žalgiris Arena so far, until there will be enough funds.

So, I think, we've got to forget about this project so far. Sad. But still, check out the page - it's nice, that they make news in English now.

So these ones are seats for the boxes?

This is the VIP seats who's installed in O2 Arena, London. These chairs are all Žalgiris Arena seats 12,000.

Sorry for the mistake, I write with Google Translate. : D:ohno:

Yes :) 12000 VIP seats. At EuroBasket 2011 Arena capacity will be 17800 seats.

17,800?
What is 14,502?

17,800?
What is 14,502?

14502 is normal seats, but the construction of the arena project has been conceived to make a temporary seat between floors. We plan to sustain an additional three rows of seats, while the number of seats would increase even three thousand.
14,502 + 3,000 - about 17,800 seats for EuroBasket:cheers::banana:

no no, 17800 seats will be just for EuroBasket. After this capacity will be 14502.

No way that this extra three rows of seating will give you 3k extra seats.
According to the picture above, three extra rows gives you about 1,5k seats.
Also this info about the seats is a bit out of this world.
The future has all the answers ;)

Nice arena. Although i have to say the balance of the layout, in particular the angle of tiers (upper seems shallow) and the VIP boxes / staging area between the 2 tiers seems too large. Its nice, but not quite as well laid out as the top class NBA arenas that I used to watch games (Conseco Fieldhouse), but good job anyway..

There are still some rumors about arena not opening on time (not again!), but we're all hoping everything is going to turn out well. Despite the opening IN the arena won't happen, we can be pretty sure there's still going to be sa little opening ceremony OUTSIDE of the arena. But the surroundings will be poor until August.

And oh yeah, it's a photo by Aug1z from miestai.net/forumas
