Welcome. There is a lot to see in Ljubljana. I am sure you won't be sorry to come. Check the Old City Center, its Ljubljana Castle and one of old Slovenian restaurants with traditional food. There are many of them, unfortunatelly, I am not sure what to suggest you.

I am sure someone will recommend you something in this topic. I am a bit in a hurry so I don't have time to tell you everything.

There is lots of stuff to try here! Depends what you are really looking for. Everyone finds something that suits him/her.

Enjoy your trip!
:)

Where can i find some delicious serbian pleskavica in ljubljana?
These two are restaurants:
Gostilna pod Rožnikom (aka ''Čad''); Cesta na Rožnik 18
Pri Jovotu; Poljanska 99

However if you'd like to go to a fast food place, just cruise the centre a bit and you'll find quite a few burek places which serve pleskavica too. And there was, I'm not sure if there still is, a place called ''Čevapdžinica Harambaš'' in the centre and as I heard their food was delicious.

Basically you won't have any trouble finding pleskavica :D

just take the train to Jesenice, jump off at Lesce-Bled and have a short walk... in Bled you should visit the castle and just hang around on the lake avenues.

I was there yesterday, lovely.

By rent-a-car from Ljubljana it's the best way too see lovely places. You should take the main road, not motorway. Some villages are next to the main road, some are only few kilometres away.

Ljubljana
Škofja Loka
Radovljica- you can taste some typicall Slovene food at pension Lectar.
Brezje - place of pilgrimage.
Kropa -famous for its traditional smithies which produce a variety of decorative metal fittings.

Also Vrba and Bohinj are very close. Vrba is a birthplace of our biggest poet France Prešeren. Bohinj is another big lake and very near is waterfall Savica, famous of its mythical story.

I gave you some information, it's up to you what you want to see.

I'd also suggest rent-a-car from Ljubljana and you can have a short tour of the Gorenjska region by yourself. Stopping in Radovljica for a Lectar lunch or dinner would also be a good idea. Or maybe stop at a ski resort for a few hours in the morning before continuing to Bled. And don't forget to try the famous Kremšnite in Bled!

Have a good trip!

As far as I know, there are very good regular bus routes in Slovenia. Last winter I was in Bohinj, Bled and Ljubljana by bus (cause I'm afraid of snow when driving :) and the buses are really good and efficient, a bit slow though, but you should check them too. Check the Ljubljana main bus station for timetables and prices: http://www.ap-ljubljana.si/. If you have time, my advice is to stay a few days in the Bled/Bohinj region because it's really great. Have a nice stay.

It is for summer but this same provider offers individual guided tours also in winter. A tour however costs 85€ so I suggest you consult some printed guide naming Lonely Planet and do the tour by yourself. Bled is just a small town after all.

No vidim, da nisem edini z določenimi predsodki do teh ljudi.

Torej, kdo so ti ljudje.

I had an awful start with this country, let's see our the next 3 days go

- I find it ridicolous that the taxi from the airport to the city costs 44 Euros, i mean we are talking about a city the size of my shoes, not even in Istanbul ( a city of 12 million) i had to pay such a ridicolous amount for transportation, infact i only paid 15 euros

- Second problem, i get to the hostel and there is no elevator, so i had to carry my 25 kg suitcase up two ramps of stairs (which could definetely be classified as a health hazard)

- Third problem, once i get to the second floor there is a sign on the door that says that the reception will be open from 8am, even though they advertise everywhere as 24 hours, so i had to wait in front of the door for a long time until someone got here

- Fourth problem, i did not have any sleep for the last 24 hours and it looks like i have to wait until 10 am before they give me a room and of course i will be wasting most of today catching up on my sleep (or lack of)

Let's see if i am going to add to this list of problems in the next 3 days
If i do, i will certainly not come back here ever again.

There are people who always need around 2 or 3 days to get used to something. I know some of them. They are so sad on first day of vacation, saying how dirty it is, how bad food did they get and much more.

You will see it's not that horrible after 2 days... You will kinda like it. If not, try going to Croatia. Haha!

Capital78
December 17th, 2008, 04:21 PM
Oh you poor Aussie. I've always thought Aussies are tougher and masculine. At least my Australian friends are like that. But, obviously you're a special case.

You should know that largeness of the city isn't important. The only important thing is duration or distance between the airport and your final stop. So, don't compare Instanbul with Ljubljana. Let me just tell you that a taxi in Vienna from airport to the main railway station (15 min) costs 32 euros. In Venice, by water taxi, from airport to the centre (20 min) costs 70-80 and by road taxi 30 euros.

Usually a taxi from Ljubljana airport to the centre costs between 35-40 euros, depends on time that takes 30-45 minutes. You you should have checked this before your arrival. Instead of asking us about potica, kremšnita and gibanica, you should have chekced web page of Ljubljana airport. But you imagine, we have even buses! Departure from airport every hour or less and the price - 5 euros!

You had problems with 2 floors and only 25 kilos??? In that case, if you can't handle this, you should have stayed at home! Or you could easily ask one girl to carry this bag instead of you, perhaps she wouldn't complain so much. Is it you first time in hostle? I've visited at least 30 hostles al around Europe and only 2 of them had elevators. Of course I had a pleasure to carry my bag higher than 2 floors.

Don't worry about tourists. They will come to Slovenia. Or maybe you've visited wrong city. You are obviously in Ljubjana (that's in eastern Sibiria). The capital of our beautiful Slovenia is LJUBLJANA!

Btw. Have a nice trip! :)

hellospank:

Some comment on your terrible 3 days in Slovenia.

... First. Mass tourism created creatures who travel from point A to see point B expecting the same conditions they left in point A to be in point B... Be aware to be this creature next time.

... A second principal mistake which is typical for mass tourism: Once I pay them they have to do everything I would like to. No. They will do what THEY are used to for the price, not what YOU wish them to do for the price. Always. Everywhere.

... As far as I know the most common check-in a hostel/hotel around the world is 2 p.m. If they let you check-in at 8, 9, 10, 11, it is because of their good will (and because there was nobody in your room the night before and so it is prepared for immediate check-in).

... To carry a 25 kg baggage is a personal irresponsibility. No matter if you just moved 17 thousand kilometers or you landed from the universe. There are two kinds of tourists, hellospank. Those with light baggage and those who wish to have light baggage... I hope you are adult enough and you didn't follow packing let's-have-the-same-comfort-as-home-America-wherever-we-go instructions from Lonely Planet!

... You are not the central point of the universe. Tired person is one of the most common being in tourist areas around the world. There may be 6 or 21 people as tired as you in the same hostel you are... From your point of view you had an extraordinary day moving from the other part of the world to Slovenia. From the hostel point of view you are an ordinary client. They checked-in people who just came from Japan 15 minutes before you and await a group of sooooo exhaaaaausted Americans (who will try to overpass you by demonstrating their almost-death tiredness; and asking internet access right when landed on reception sofa) half an hour later.

... Far more people use public transport daily in Europe than in anglo-saxon countries. That is why it is cheaper, while taxi cabs more expensive than what you are used to. Some Slovenes may not comment your taxi affair as they have literally no experience with taxi cabs in their life and they won't know what to say about it.

... There are two general types of a travel. 1 - comfortable, trouble free, prepaid in advance, experienceless, expensive. 2 - tiring, trouble full, not prepaid, experiencefull, cheap. Before you go somewhere next time, define yourself as no.1 or no.2... The most common cause of disappointing vacations is neither a taxi driver nor a hostel staff. The most common cause of disappointing vacations is a person, who is a traveler no.2, but thought he was the no.1 one.

... Troubles you described, that is just traveling, hellospank! It causes troubles. If it does not, than it is A-to-B-moving, not traveling. The affair about locked reception after 24h non-sleeping will get a funny story during evening talks with friends in Melbourne two years later, believe it :wink2:. Otherwise you can always prepare more cash, switch to a person no.1 and feed your friends with ingenious Ljubljanaz-cool-dude-like stories.

PS: Oh, I forgot. Many protected historical buildings in Europe work as hotels nowadays. Because they are protected, reconstructions are limited and building a lift may be forbidden, because it may destroy it's historical value. So an absence of a lift is often not a lack of good service, but a consequence of why people travel to Europe. To see history of architecture.

@OV_79.. Thank you for telling this to our friend Hellospank25. Traveling on low budget comes with some problems, and if you are not able to cope with them, don't travel, it is as easy as it gets.

That red sauce is, i believe, ajvar. Its made from tomatoes, red pepper, hot pepper, onions.

Hi, guys!

I have a few questions about a planned trip to Slovenia. I'll travel from Bulgaria via Slovenia and my final destination is Vienna. I like to see the as much as possible within 3-4-5 days. I think its best to choose a base somewhere in the middle of Slovenia, say Ljubljana or its surroundings and to make day trips to Bled, Piran, probably Postoina, and Maribor.

However, I found a great place near Bled lake. I like the idea of going there but I am not sure if 3-4 days are not too much for a place like this won't be too long - I mean I don't want just to stay and enjoy the lake. A day-trip to Ljubljana is OK, but Piran seems too much for a day.

I have another option - going to Vienna and then, on my way back to Bulgaria, to pass via Maribor.

Please advise me what to do.

Thanks in advance!

It is best that you stay at a hotel (or hostel) in Ljubljana as it is centrally located and has the best offer of hotels and everything else.

Here is my suggestion for your trip:

Day 1: Ljubljana. You find a hotel (or hostel) and explore the city's sights. (old town, castle, museums and galeries, boat trip, shopping in BTC..., whatever interests you)

Day 2: Seaside. Postojna cave first, Lipica and then Piran.

Day 3: A trip to Bled (and maybe Bohinj, some say it's even nicer than Bled).

Day 4: Celje old town and castle tour, and Maribor.

Day 5: You can either stretch the upper sights withing these five days or perhaps visit one of the many spas (toplice) and water parks Slovenia has to offer. Or maybe a trip to Škocjan caves, a soča river ride, Dolenjska and Novo Mesto? Ptuj old town and castle?

And bear in mind that it shouldn't take you more than an hour or max. two to reach any of these destinations.

I hope you have a great time.
