I don't live in Taipei City, I live in Taipei County, Zhonghe City 台北縣中和市. I have MRT station 景安站 just across the road, it is very convenient and not so expensive.

It's from Elephant Mountain. You are right, from this place you can see the complete panorama of Taipei City. As you can see it is not far from Taipei 101.

Maokong, somewhere above Chengchi University, maybe from Zhangshan Temple (樟山寺)

I am already planning to go up to Elephant mountain one evening for the view. I am now thinking of going up either Maokong or Datun mountain also.

How hard/long are the hiking trails for Maokong and Datun mountain? Would you recommend one over the other?

Unfortunately I have never climbed Datun Mountain, but I climbed Qixing Mountain (the highest peak in Yangming Mountains) twice. However both times I couldn't see Taipei because of the clouds - I think both Datun and Qixing Mountains are too high, it is very rare that you can have this view:

Anyway, trail starts from Zhuzihu (Bamboo Lake) and you can get there by minibus from Yangming Park entrence (where you can get by bus from Shilin MRT station). As Datun or Qixing are really tall it is harder to climb. It took me the whole day to climb up and down Qixing Mountain but I started from the park entrence (Datun Mountain is much further from the entrence)

As far as Maokong is concerned, there are several trails, some of them start from Chengchi University. There are also few buses going from Muzha MRT station to this area. Zhinan Temple, Zhangshan Temple and numerous other spots (tea houses) have really nice views. It took me about 1-2 hours to get to Zhangshan Temple from Chengchi University, to get to Zhinan Temple from the university is less than an hour.

Here is a video (Buildings actually look better in the video than in reality) without any photoshop or editing of a few building on Chunghsiao East Rd. near Tunhwa. Most building are about 30-40 years old which have not had any renovations.

Some of the newer building around Taipei's 101 are very nice but there are very few of those around compared to the older and dirty buildings covered with bathroom tile like the ones shown in the above video.

Just a question, and I'm pretty sure a lot of people have discussed this in the past, but where EXACTLY is the Central Business District of Taipei?

Xinyi/Taipei 101 area?

I don't know why the government doesn't plan an area for highrise development, it would be a much more efficient use of land since it is already scarce.

denser doesnt mean good. i prefer good architecture over density.

spectacular videography! taiwan looks really great in these videos. i especially like the scene where the high speed train traverses among the skyscrapers.

The river (Xindian River, not Danshui River) is in front of the development. The project is in Xindian above MRT depot and around Xinbitan Station.

i REALLY hope these buildings look nice and use lots of windows instead of typical taiwanese materials of grey or brown concrete or tiles with small windows. i cant tell in the renderings of scene. this is such a huge complex with so many towers that it would be more than disappointing if these buildings turn out really fugly!!

taipei has a lot of greenery and mountains surrounding it tho easily accessible by most of the population so it needs less parks in dense areas. new york city doesnt have any mountains around it so it needs several big parks mixed in with dense areas. it takes a longer time to get into the suburbs from the city - manhattan, the densest and most urban borough of new york city.

I took a trip to Penghu recently and flew from Songshan to Magong. Not sure how many of you know this but Taiwan strictly forbidden electronic devices such as digital cameras to be on during the entire trip. I was able to sneak a few shots during the take off as my seat during the flight to Magong was in the middle, far away from flight attendants. Unfortunately on the way back, I wasn't able to take any photos since my seat was much farther in the back and the flight attendant was eyeing my camera ever since I took it out of my backpack mid-flight lol. It's a shame too as there were quite a few good shots of Penghu during the take off and of Taipei before we landed. Anyway, I thought I'd share what I did take anyway.

it's designed to be overbearing as are the rest of CY Lee's works. Despite my reservations about the design, it actually looks okay as Taipei is so devoid of notable landmarks.

Governments must push for proper city renewal. Have a district that can be reconstructed to have a proper SKYLINE. Xinyi district is not up to international standards. Look at Kuala Lumpur, look at how they turned their city over. Even a very old city like Tokyo atleast have a proper skyline not to mention Shanghai, Hong Kong and Singapore. That is why no international movies are ever filmed in Taipei. Nature are pretty, and skyline aren't pretty.. =.=

The large bright structure to the top left is the Beitou MRT station, which can take you straight to Danshui or to Xin Beitou MRT station where the hot springs are. Toward the right of the photo you can see a red MRT train going on a track that curves from the station and runs across the photo. That's the line to Xin Beitou.
