View Full Version : Aberdeen - UK
Irish Blood English Heart November 20th, 2003, 02:26 AM Aberdeen is Scotland's 3rd biggest city after Glasgow and Edinburgh and is the biggest oil city in Europe being the main onshore base for North Sea Oil. It is one of the most prosperous cities in Europe with unemployment under 2% and with an average wage of £29500 ($42000) p/a yet property is amongst the cheapest in the UK due to the decline from the heady days of the 1980's oil boom.
The only really tall buildings in Aberdeen are the magnificant Victorian Grannite buildings such as The Town Hall and the worlds largest granite building the Marischal college which is part of 2 universities in Aberdeen and the tower blocks and ugly offices built in the 70's. Right now theres no planned high-rises in Aberdeen but high-rises are slowly taking off in English cities and perhaps Scotland's cities will follow suit.
The population of Aberdeen today is about 212,500.
Aberdeen is home to the worlds busiest Heliport and a major international Airport. To show how far North Aberdeen is its 7 hours north of London by train and 2.5 hours north of Edinburgh and its at the same latitude as St.Petersburg. Aberdeen though is relatively mild and is actually a seaside resort with fab sandy beach!! It is also a busy port and home to oil support vessels a big fishing fleet and car/passenger ferries to Shetland, Iceland and Norway.
Aberdeen is also close to the royal palace of Balmoral and the biggest arctic mountain wilderness in the UK in the Cairngorms.

Irish Blood English Heart November 20th, 2003, 09:17 PM most the churches are now pubs de snor!! lol so maybe it used to be but it isnt now! the reason its grey is all the buildings are made from the local stone granite rather than bricks or sandstone like most british cities.
SeeMacau November 21st, 2003, 07:51 AM I can see so many churches in the pics !!

The city looks amazing, but skyline :?
Jan November 24th, 2003, 12:59 AM Seems like the kind of place where you don't need to look long for a decent piss...
I hate to say this but the high-rises on the last picture actually ruin the cityscape from that point of view.
Englishman November 24th, 2003, 02:30 AM I agree Jan, they all look like 60s style concrete commie blocks.
I'm amazed by the unemployment figures and wages. Maybe I should consider a move up north!!!
Talisker November 25th, 2003, 03:55 PM You mean a decent piss-up?? I agree though - the commieblocks have a prominant position on the horizon in many places of the city. Wonderful place though and surely one of the highest standards of living in the UK.
Here's a few of the commieblocks:

PegRules04 January 15th, 2004, 12:29 AM Beautiful architecture, but really not much of a skyline at all, at least in terms of height. 5/10

Justme October 15th, 2004, 12:42 AM Looks a little grey to me to be honest. Needs a bit more colour.
Lot nicer than I thought though.
MattSal May 31st, 2005, 04:16 PM Nice churches, but the high-rises are bland and few. I give it a 6/10.
SoboleuS May 31st, 2005, 07:05 PM Some really nice historic towers and some really boring new ones... 6,5/10
The Boy David July 9th, 2005, 06:56 PM Agreed - the new buildings leave a lot to be desired, but the old architecture more than makes up for it.
Fabulous city.
8/10
Talisker July 9th, 2005, 09:37 PM Strangely I had a dream recently, where I was back in Aberdeen, and the west end was full of highrise office blocks, including this wierd industrial looking tower. What a bitter disapointment

sharpie20 May 29th, 2006, 06:54 PM I like the style of the churches, but the newer buildings, especially that grey one is really ugly, and i don't think that this city has much of a skyline to boast about.
