Bank One Tower
Indianapolis, USA

HEIGHT: 247m/811 feet
FLOORS: 49 floors
COMPLETION: 1990
ARCHITECT: Stubbins Associates

Bank One Center is a 700' landmark skyscraper rising above the most prominent site in Indianapolis. The 1,000,000-square-foot office development is the tallest building in Indiana and serves as the new headquarters for Bank One Indianapolis.
Designed as a symmetrical and orderly form relating to its central location and the character of the city, the tower establishes a pivotal presence on Monument Circle and an axial anchor point on War Memorial Mall.

The 48-story office tower is flanked by two four-story low-rise wings enclosing skylit wintergardens. Completing the fourth quadrant of the city block, these garden wings surround and emphasize gateway entrances to Monument Circle, and correspond in height to the neighboring historic Christ Church and Federal Building on the Mall.

Four major entrances integrate the project into the streets of the city grid and open into a marble and granite, three-story lobby space connecting the public wintergardens and 20,000 square feet of retail space at street level. A parking structure of six stories above grade and two stories below grade accommodates 700 cars.

Capped by two communications masts terminating 800' above ground, the tower is visually heightened by its distinctive form. Carved, step-backed corners shape and articulate the tower and provide visual interest on the facade. A notch down the center of the north and south faces further accentuates the verticality and slenderness of the skyscraper when viewed from the Mall and Monument Circle.

Employing an efficient stacked truss system, the steel structure is clad in light-grey granite accented by a darker granite band beneath the windows to impart an elegant, dignified quality.

Dull and with a silly top. I really don't like this building, it looks like an afterthought. Passé before it even opened. I can't believe Stubbins designed it since I'm a fan of their work!

A rather pleasant building, considering that it is really just a glorified corporate box (but how many highrises aren't?)...

I like the top and the double sprires play into the bi-axial/symmetrical look of the facade. It might be bland, but it is a well designed building IMO.

That rooftop is a disgrace. What happened? Run out of money or something. Also considered the fact is opened up in 1990, this is foxy architectecture 'ensuite la lettre'. A 2/10 it is. Bah!

the design is ok, I like the setbacks but the roof just kills it...they could have done something more interesting with the top...gets points for height though....7/10.

7.5/10 - Trying to be objective, even though I'm a native of Indy and was able to watch as this tower rose skyward.
The setbacks and indentations help the tower's height, especially the line of black glass running up the centers of the broader sides. There's good contrast between the stone and the glass of the facade, even though I might have given it more vertical emphasis.
The tower, IMO, is still a bit blocky, and could have used one or two larger setbacks near the ground.
THe biggest problem, though, which probably cost this one one point, is the crown - it just doesn't flow naturally from the tower, and really looks like a lid that doesn't quite fit. I really think they should have finished the building off with a series of small setbacks leading up to the antennas.
It's still a pretty nice tower, however, and makes a pleasant site from the interstate...
Trivia note - does anyone remember the Cylons from Battlestar Galactica, the robotic aliens in shining metal, with slots in their "helmets" where there eyes should be, and a sinister red light flickering back and forth in its depths? The funny thing is, this tower has has the same sort of red lights in those two long "windows" on its crown, so sometimes I can't keep from thinking of it as the "Cylon Bank Tower"...:D

Muse

LOL @ the Cylon analogy Liz L. Battlestar Galactica, one of the ten worst movies ever made.

As for Bank One Tower, hmmmmm. It's not necessarily a bad structure yet certainly not a masterpiece.

The vertical setbacks are my favourite part of this one. I prefer the slender black and white box about a block away; One Indiana Square.

Bank One Tower: 5.5

The sleek black 'n white One Indiana Square. Not bad for a modern building completed in 1970. - 8.5

Im almost certain that the rooftop was designed the way it was, is to match the roof of the Indiana World War Memorial which is directly north of the Bank One Tower. Driving along I-65, north of the north split in downtown Indianapolis, you can see how the rooftops of the two buildings match up with each other.

I rate it an eight. It has a nice symmetry and it blends well with the rest of the Indy skyline. It also has nice symmetry within the skyline, being in the center with 500 footers on both sides east and west, and 400 footers on each side east, west and north.

It isn't terribly fancy, as others on this thread would like it to be, but this is Indiana. Hoosiers are famous for their practicality, and this builiding is very functional with plenty of large, easily leasable floor plates. You don't go from farmers working hard 14 hours a day; to building pure, aesthetically pleasing, work of art buildings wasting floor space in one generation.

Naptown,

First off, I'm a big fan of Indianapolis. I have to be fair though, considering all the bashing I've done of late of Atlanta's (sick) collection of 'scrapers. At a minimum, I really wish this building had more articulation at the corners...it looks like a really, really, really tall suburban office park building with a great cap. Unlike Atlanta, this building communicates with the pedestrian at the street level and that is it's best attribute.

I think that it is a good building for the City. I remember before the thing was built, the City looked too balanced with nearly identical AUL and One Indiana Square at opposite sides of downtown. The building is its best at night where the lighting give it a dramatic effect like it is even taller than it really is. I wish they would change the color of the top for various events though.

I was thinking the same thing, like:

Red, White, Blue: Fourth of July, Vetreans' Day, Memorial Day, Flag Day, Presidents' Day
Green, Red: Christmas
Orange: Halloween
Red: Valentine's Day
Yellow, Red, Purple: Thanksgiving
Green: St. Patick's Day
Purple and Yellow: Easter
Blue and White: Big Ten Tournament/RCA Tournament/Final Four
Black and White Checkard Flag: Indy 500, Brickyard 400, US Grand PRix

Pacers winning the NBA title: Yellow and Blue :D
Colts winning the Superbowl: Blue and White :D

Even if they just changed the light beams at the first setback, that would be better than nothing.

I give this one an 8.5. Nice design, although uninspiring. The top of the tower and it's spires are nice. There is still something rather ungraceful about it though.

Dull and with a silly top. I really don't like this building, it looks like an afterthought. Passé before it even opened. I can't believe Stubbins designed it since I'm a fan of their work!

4/10

The top is meant to mimic the top of the Indiana War Memorial, a couple blocks directly north of this tower. I think it's an excellent building for the character of the Indianapolis skyline. 9/10

What a bland looking building, there's nothing special about this, just another box building with a shaped crown 5/10

It's all very cliche and uninspired, and this hurts for being the tallest building in the city.

Well proportioned, but forgettable. Dual towers lends a pleasant aire of symmetry.

Boring. 4.5 I'm sure Indianapolis has its fortes... skyscrapers sadly isn't one of them.

Absolutely hideous design. Wouldn't even be in the top 100 without the cheating antennas.

You can say that again. I don't think there is one skyscraper I like in Indy.
