This Arena is located in Atlanta Georgia. It is home to the Atlanta Hawks, and the Atlanta Thashers. So what do you think?

Very nice architecture......off course as a Dutchman it would all the same be stupid to disapprove a building sponsored by a Dutch company. :)

Phillips is a Dutch Company?

Yeah, founded by Gerard and Anton Philips in 1891 in Eindhoven, the Netherlands. Very surprising they sponsor this stadium, considering unlike other multinationals they only sponsor one single team, which is Eindhoven based PSV Eindhoven.

The good thing about this arena is, that all the luxury boxes are located at one sideline, instead of between all the other seats like in many other arenas. And that is a very good thing for the atmostphere.

Philips Arena was built in 1999 to replace the outdated Omni Arena. Maximum capacity is 21,000 for concerts and other entertainment events, 18,729 for basketball, and 18,545 for hockey. (source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phillips_Arena)

One of the most unique features of the arena is that all of the corporate boxes, instead of being placed on multiple tiers wrapping around the entire seating bowl, are stacked on one side of the arena, which allows the upper tier to be placed much closer to the arena floor.

Contrast that with an arena like Staples Center, in which THREE TIERS of boxes circle the arena, upon which the upper deck rests:

A lot of new football (soccer) stadiums over here in Holland are constructed in a similar way as well. Another advantage is that you can have all commercial areas centered at one side of the stadium

The difference between the two is quite sizeable. The newer one has a bigger video screen than the old one. It also uses LED tecnology, allowing for more versatile uses of it. Any of those screens (the video screen itself, the screen with the score or the advertising screens) can be used to show anything it wants. It can show video, graphics and anything else you can imagine. The old one can only do that with the video screen. The new one can use those extra screens to rotate through stats and other information pertinent to the game, while the old one doesn't have that capability. The new one is also far brighter and can bring in far more advertising money, an especially important quality in these trying economic times that will surely hurt the sporting industry.

So Philips Arena's scoreboard is OLD? I wasn't directing the question to you, but the size difference between the two scoreboards IS NOT obvious in those little photos. None of the things you have listed could be determined from comparing the two photos. Having never been to the VeriZon Center, one would not be able to know any of those "facts" you listed. Ok?

Who needs more advertising bullshit on the scoreboard? God, isn't there enough already? Besides, Philips limits the number of advertisers to 10...the original advertisers are - Coca-Cola, Delta Air Lines, Home Depot, Powertel, United Parcel Service, AnheuserBusch, Bank of America, MediaOne and WebMD. I personally don't want MORE advertising space on the scoreboard - that doesn't make it better in my opinion.

I didn't say that those are things you could have noticed in the pictures. You asked the other poster what the difference was between the two and since he didn't answer your question I did. No need to be so defensive.

While some people object to more advertising, I would welcome it if you were a fan of either team that plays at Phillips Arena. All the other teams are bringing in far more advertising money and a chunk of that money goes back into the team. If your team's revenues are lower than that of your competition, it will be tough to compete with those teams for free agents. Whether people like it or not, sports is a business and the teams that fight that are the teams that will be left behind.

And btw, there are 29 NBA arenas. Four of those will be replaced or majorly renovated in the near future and get new scoreboards to go with it. Of the 24 other arenas (besides Phillips), 19 have scoreboards newer than the one at Phillips Arena, so yes, that one is older than most.

I'm not defensive...you're offensive. There's a big difference, and offensive people LOVE to put the blame on the other person as "defensive". That's just another form of bullshit and anyone with a brain knows it.

I'm finding out that you're an expert on FIFA, soccer, NBA arenas, scoreboard technology...what else? Probably anything anyone in this forum can comment on (especially me), you're an expert on the subject. This discussion didn't include you AT ALL, but you poked your nose in with unsolicited expert facts and statistics - and who knows if they are true....I for one don't believe EVERYTHING you type in this forum, so don't think for a minute that your "facts" are believed by everyone.

Well my heart is broken knowing that you don't believe everything I say. That's fine and it doesn't bother me one bit. Fact is I'm a college student studying business. The majority of my projects can be done on the topic of my choice and I usually make them sports related. I've had to run the numbers and put together my own proposal for a US WC and have studied the future of MLS. I also did an internship with arena design firm so I have a pretty good idea of what goes into stadiums, scoreboard included. Believe me or not. It won't affect me one way or another.

You asked a question about the differences between the scoreboards and I thought you meant it as an honest question. Since the other poster didn't answer the question, I did. Sorry, I guess that when someone asks a question I have a tendency to answer it if I know the answer. If you really want to know that what I told you was true I can list the arenas with more modern scoreboards.

Are you even aware of the soap opera that's been the team's ownership and management? Have you been privvy to the lack of support from the NHL? True enough Atlanta lacks a large hard-core hockey fan base compared to some other cities, but don't lay this one at the feet of the populace unless you've been part of this debacle. At least we didn't sacrifice millions of taxpayer dollars in some sham to prop up a failing franchise (Phoenix, Miami).

I think the problem runs deeper than fan support here. the ASG (Atlanta Spirit Group) who owns the Thrashers and Hawks have been a bumbling group of guys since they purchased the teams 7 years ago. They have been thru court battles pretty much since 2005. I will say that Atlanta is not necessarily a hockey market, but there are some die-hard fans here. I'm not old enough to know why the Flames left in 1980, but the Thrashers organization has not helped themselves. Only 1 playoff appearance in 12 seasons and bad decisions in the front office. I think the handwriting has been on the wall for quite some time now...
