Malawi is divided into 28 districts and borders 3 countries Tanzania to the north-northeast, Zambia to the west and Mozambique to the south east and south

Malawi derives its name from the Maravi, a Bantu people who came from the southern Congo about 600 years ago. On reaching the area north of Lake Malawi, the Maravi divided. One branch, the ancestors of the present-day Chewas, moved south to the west bank of the lake. The other, the ancestors of the Nyanjas, moved down the east bank to the southern part of the country.
By AD 1500, the two divisions of the tribe had established a kingdom stretching from north of the present-day city of Nkhotakota to the Zambezi River in the south, and from Lake Malawi in the east, to the Luangwa River in Zambia in the west.
The Chewas constitute 90% of the population of the central region; the Nyanja tribe predominates in the south and the Tumbuka in the north. In addition, significant numbers of the Tongas live in the north; Ngonis--an offshoot of the Zulus who came from South Africa in the early 1800s--live in the lower northern and lower central regions; and the Yao, who are mostly Muslim, live along the southeastern border with Mozambique.

youza October 17th, 2008, 04:07 PM What a nice country Malawi looks! Unfortunately the country's economy isn't good enough these days, and the Malawi Kwacha keeps depreciating against US dollar. I wish I could go visiting that country one day to get a first-hand experience of everyday life there.
The E.N.D October 27th, 2008, 05:11 AM Oh man!Malawi has got to be one of the most memorable African holidays I've ever been on!I'm a Joburger so I'm used to heat but when we landed at the airport in Blantyre,it was like we were on the Sun!The city itself was so so but the real beauty of Malawi is it's natural features...the mountains, the forests, the friendly people and most importanty, the Lake! Will try to find the pics I took.
Samuel107 October 27th, 2008, 05:35 AM its very interesting to see other african countries. those pics of yours would b really appreciated.

The E.N.D October 28th, 2008, 09:48 PM Blantyre is not a very big city but it is indeed chaotic. The transport system is especially frustrating and I take my hat off to the people that use it.I didn't take pics of the city unfortunately but here are a few snippets of Blantyre.http://i33.tinypic.com/5vsisk.jpg http://i38.tinypic.com/5xs01.jpg
The E.N.D October 28th, 2008, 10:14 PM Lake Malawi is perhaps the country's biggest tourism attraction and it is rightfully so.I took us about 6 hours to get from Blantyre to the main holiday resorts that lie s plendidly across the coast of the lakes. http://i36.tinypic.com/35iq2hy.jpg http://i38.tinypic.com/p3dqt.jpg http://i35.tinypic.com/2dc7trk.jpg http://i35.tinypic.com/ic0914.jpg http://i33.tinypic.com/2liugww.jpg http://i37.tinypic.com/3010nth.jpg

LukeIRL December 13th, 2008, 06:20 PM I lived in Northern Malawi for 8 months. Loved the place. Would love to go back. It's got so many contrasting places for such a small country.
