As Bangalore leads the way in IT, fashion, BT, it is also an emerging venue for many aviation, aerospace and defense projects. With many private companies within Bangalore showing their potential to provide high quality IT solutions, composites, embedded systems, mro's, and aerospace components, Bangalore has the potential to bag a lot of projects.

Add to this, the recent GoI initiative to rope in private Indian companies for offset defence projects. This initiative makes the Aero-India show a much awaited one. The bi-annual Aero India show is here again in Feb 2009. Venue as usual will be the Yelahanka air force station. The official website is : www.aeroindia.in (www.aeroindia.in/)

This thread is to discuss about projects, news (especially Aero-India), and companies with relevance to the above. It also aims to find out whether Bangalore is (or will become) the aviation capital of the country. Please post pictures wherever possible.

BANGALORE: Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) and the National Aerospace Laboratories (NAL) are planning to jointly design and develop a 70-seater civil regional aircraft.

Its development cost could run to Rs.4,000 crore and will roll out for certification in six to seven years. The aircraft will cater to regional routes, having a range of around 600 km to 800 km.

A joint delegation from HAL and NAL will make a presentation soon on the issue to Defence Minister A.K. Antony.

HAL and the NAL are yet to decide on aspects such as work share, funding, and even whether the aircraft will have a turbo-prop or turbo jet engine.

The two organisations have estimated that over the next 20 years there will be a requirement for around 400 aircraft from both the defence services and civil airlines for regional aircraft of this size. While the Services are looking to replace Dornier, Avro and AN-32 fleets, the growing domestic aviation sector will need to acquire additional regional aircraft of this size.

HAL’s Director (Design and Development) N.C. Agarwal, who will lead the company’s team during the presentation, told The Hindu that partners from overseas and India would fund the project on a risk-share basis.

NAL initially mooted the idea of a 70-seater aircraft and had held discussions with Pratt and Whitney (Canada) and General Electric (U.S.) for an engine.

NAL Director A.R. Upadhya will head the laboratory’s delegation.

Air Works, Honeywell in service centre pact

Our Bureau

Hyderabad, Oct. 15 Air Works on Wednesday announced an authorised service centre agreement with Honeywell at the India Aviation Week 2008 here.

Under the agreement, Air Works will offer maintenance, repair and service facilities for Honeywell engines TFE 731 and CFE 738 series along with Auxiliary Power Units (APUs).

In addition, Air Works will also service Honeywell’s complete range of navigation and communication equipment, Mr Fredrik Groth, its Chief Executive Officer, said in a press release.

Air Works General Aviation MRO is the largest in India with over 60 per cent market share. Starting with the maintenance and overhaul work on a few DC-3s in the early 1950s, Air Works currently does DGCA-approved maintenance on nearly 50 different aircraft types, including Gulfstream, Bombardier, Dassault, Hawker, Cessna, Beech and the respective engines, the release added.

MRO facility :

The company is already expanding its reach in providing MRO services by launching a commercial MRO facility in Hosur, near Bangalore in October.

“We are excited to announce this appointment and look forward to working with Air Works in order to bring a new dimension in customer support and value to Indian Business and General Aviation industry,” said Mr Shane Tedjarati, President, India & China, Honeywell Ltd.

‘LCA here to stay, IAF to induct 140 fighters’ (http://www.indianexpress.com/news/-LCA-here-to-stay--IAF-to-induct-140-fighters-/378025)

Bangalore, October 25 : It had been grounded even before it took flight after the Air Force questioned its fighting capabilities but the indigenous Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) seems to have got a new lease of life.

Declaring that the project would not be abandoned, Defence Minister A K Antony announced on Saturday that the country would purchase a total of 140 aircraft to form seven fighter squadrons of the IAF.

The Minister, who conducted a review meeting of the Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) in Bangalore, admitted that the project had been hit by a series of delays but said the aircraft would now be ready by the end of 2010 and the first of the fighters would be inducted the next year.

While the IAF has already committed to buying two squadrons of the indigenous fighter, this is the first time that the minister has gone on record to say that as many as 140 fighters will eventually be inducted into the Air Force. “After many years of waiting since 1982 (when the project was sanctioned) the LCA has at last become a reality. We will get the first operational fighter by 2011. The final aim is to acquire seven squadrons of the fighter,” Antony told reporters.

Bangalore: United Technologies Corp (UTC) launched an office in Bangalore on Tuesday to broaden and deepen its local supplier base for aerospace products.

Louis Chenevert, CEO of the $55-billion company, told reporters here that the company already sources from some 14 Indian firms, and the plan was to double that number, as also increase involvement with existing partners.

UTC — makers of the Pratt & Whitney aircraft engines, Hamilton Sundstrand aerospace systems and Sikorsky helicopters — works in India with companies like HAL, L&T, Tata, HCL, TW Metals and Quest Manufacturing. It also works with Hyderabadbased Infotech, in which it has a 15% stake and which has about 1,000 employees.

Chenevert said Hamilton Sundstrand has sourced key components from India, including for the Boeing 787 Dreamliner. “HAL has provided critical parts for jet engines. India has particularly good capabilities in composite parts, developing newer processes for it, development of lighter weight material, as also in precision machining and electronics,” he said. Bangalore is India’s hub for aerospace manufacturing. The presence of HAL in the city has spawned a large eco-system of component and parts manufacturers, as also aerospace-related technology companies. Chenevert noted that it’s a “long lifecycle business”, that once the company identifies a good supplier, it becomes a “30-50 year relationship”.

UTC, which also owns the Otis elevator and escalator business, and the Carrier heating and airconditioning business, sees India as a potentially big market too. The company expects to do a total business of $500 million in India this year, up from $100 million early this decade. “We expect this will go up to $1 billion in two to three years,” Chenevert said. About 30-40% of this is expected to come from aerospace related business, including opportunities in the defence space.

Otis sold its first elevator in India (in Chennai) over a century ago, in 1899.
Today, UTC’s businesses together have 102 offices, three factories and 4,000employees in India. Otis has a manufacturing facility in Bangalore that can manufacture 6,000 elevators a year.

Asked about Pratt & Whitney’s stated plans for a MRO (maintenance, repair and overhaul) facility in India, Chenevert said the company was still assessing the matter. The company is known to have had talks with Kingfisher Airlines on this.

NEW DELHI: The first aircraft maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) facility in India would come up at Hosur near Bangalore, with its promoter Air
Works receiving the approval of the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).

Announcing that it had recently received DGCA approval, Air Works CEO Fredrik Groth said the company, which already has one hangar at Hosur airport that can house two turboprop ATR-72 size aircraft, would construct two more larger hangars by 2009.

"We have plans to pump in USD 40 million into the project", he said, adding that the funds would be put into set up the additional hangars, the aircraft painting operations as well as for future engine and components facilities.

The company, which claims to be the largest general aviation and MRO firm in India, would provide services like line and base maintenance, aircraft painting, structural repairs, cabin and avionic upgrades. It would also offer component repairs and spare parts sourcing.

"We are extremely happy on being recognized for our efforts by DGCA and are now all set to commence operations as India's first commercial MRO facility .

We now look forward to performing our services to the airlines of India, which so far have had to either build up in house maintenance capabilities or send their aircraft abroad for servicing," Groth told reporters here.

The company would start operations with the existing hangar and soon build two more "no later than 2009 end" at the Hosur airport, which has a 7,000 feet runway capable of accepting all types of commercial aircraft.

Air Works has already announced a joint venture with Air Livery Plc of the UK, as its partner on the upcoming dedicated state of the art paint hangar.

Air Works' General Aviation MRO, Groth said, was "already the largest in India with over 60 per cent market share".

Starting with the maintenance and overhaul work on a few DC-3s in the early 1950s, Air Works currently does DGCA approved maintenance on over 75 aircraft including Gulfstream, Bombardier, Dassault, Hawker, Cessna, Beech and others.

It had recently announced an authorized service centre agreement with US-based Honeywell to offer MRO services for Honeywell engines TFE 731 and CFE 738 series along with Auxiliary Power Units (APUs), along with navigation and communication equipment.

The Centre for Asia Pacific Aviation (CAPA) and the Bangalore-based Subramanya Construction and Development Company (SCDC) Monday signed a joint venture agreement to set up the world's first integrated aviation university and training campus in the Karnataka capital.

The Sydney-based CAPA, a globally recognised provider of industry research and analysis, and SCDC will invest $125 million to develop CAPA AeroPark on a 50-acre site in Bangalore by 2012.

The fully developed campus will have state-of-the-art academic facilities together with full flight simulators, a flying school, engineering workshops and laboratories, research centres, accommodation for students and faculty, recreational facilities, a hotel and convention centre.

The university would have satellite academies in Delhi and Mumbai for airline and airport management, pilots, engineers, air traffic controllers, cabin crew and regulators.

"This facility is in response to a felt need for trained aviation personnel in India given the rapid growth that is envisaged in India's aviation industry over the next few years. It further enhances the growing Australia-India trade and investment relations," Consul General of India in Sydney Amit Dasgupta told IANS.

India has been one of the fastest growing aviation markets with demand for skilled personnel expected to triple over the next decade. Even conservative projections estimate India will emerge as the third largest aviation market in the world in the next 12-15 years.

"There is an emerging global shortage of skilled human resources in the industry, which is particularly acute in rapidly emerging markets such as India and neighbouring regions. The aviation industries in India and the Gulf alone are expected to see investment in excess of $200 billion over the next decade and availability of skills is critical to support this," said CAPA Group Executive Chairman Peter Harbison.

According to the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO), the Asia Pacific region now has training capacity to meet only 35 percent of its annual requirement of almost 14,000 pilots- an annual shortfall of 9,000.

The CAPA AeroPark Masterplan has been developed after consultations with airlines, airports, governments, universities and aviation training providers from around the world, and on-the-ground study of currently available training infrastructure in India.

SCDC Group Chairman K.N.Balasubramanyam said: "This facility will be vital for developing a professional, sustainable and safe aviation industry and will help position India as a globally competitive aviation and aerospace hub." This is SCDC's first foray into the education sector.

Bangalore has been chosen as the location for the campus because it is the country's aerospace hub, home to Hindustan Aeronautics, the nation's leading aerospace company, and the Airbus Engineering and Design Centre, Boeing's Research and Technology Centre, besides several national research institutes and companies involved in aviation technology, design, maintenance and manufacturing.

Tata Advanced Systems (TAS), the wholly owned aircraft and defence systems subsidiary of Tata Sons Ltd, has tied up with DC Enterprises (DCE), a Bangalore-based firm run by a father and son team, to make mini air vehicles (MAVs) for defence, paramilitary and disaster management applications.

TAS is setting up a fabrication unit in Bangalore. The small aircraft, with wing spans of 6 to 18 inches, are to be built out of carbon fibre composites, and is estimated to cost `60-80 lakh each.

While TAS is investing in building the factory, DCE will provide the technology on payment of a royalty, said N. Chandrashekar, who set up DCE in 2005.

The investment from TAS is low at this stage, as capital expenditure requirements to make such small aircraft are not big. Industry experts estimate it to be in the region of `20 lakh.

A TAS executive in Bangalore did not deny the development, but expressed inability to comment without authorization. He did not officially respond to emailed questions sent on Friday. In the last five years, DCE has exported some 4,000 tiny motors, weighing just a few grams and costing between $60-90 (`2,712-4,068), mainly targeting the overseas aero modelling market, a niche market being catered to by just a handful of firms.

The venture provides TAS “a potential partner who can take up significant work share in upcoming large UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle) projects like the mini UAV project of the Indian Army, thereby improving TAS’ own capability to respond effectively to the programme,” said Rahul Gangal, executive vice-president, defence advisory services, Religare Capital Markets Ltd.

“The tie-up also shows that large groups are amenable to partnering with small players with niche capabilities, but who may not want to be in all segments of the value chain,” Gangal said.

DCE is also expected to play a key role in the national programme for MAVs, supported by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and the department of science and technology.

“One of the challenges in any MAV development is the small motors which provide the propulsion,” said P.S. Krishnan, director of DRDO’s aeronautical development establishment (ADE) in Bangalore “DC Enterprises has been identified as the number one agency to provide such small motors.” ADE is the coordinating agency for the programme.

Vying to make it into the Indian Air Force

Lockheed Martin, Boeing and other manufacturers make a beeline for the Aero Show

Hemanth CS

With India planning to make some big-ticket purchases to strengthen its air power, the upcoming Aero India, to be held at the Air Force Station, Yelahanka, will see many foreign firms exhibiting their latest products.
As reported earlier, the US aviation company, Lockheed Martin, will be bringing the F-35 cockpit demonstrator to Aero India 2011 for the first time. Also to make a presence during the five-day air show would be the US Air Force's WC-130 (Weather Bird).
A Lockheed official said that the US Air Force is working to bring the WC-130 (Weather Bird), which has a specialised configuration for weather data mapping.
The WC-130 a high-wing, medium-range aircraft is flown by the Air Force Reserve Command for weather reconnaissance missions.
The aircraft, a modified version of the C-130, can stay aloft nearly 15 hours and can covers 3,500 miles at a stretch.
"Lockheed Martin's two F-16s (Block 60) aircraft and the US Air Force's two F-16s will be displayed," said an official.
Boeing is also planning to bring a wide range of aircraft, which include the F/A-18 Super Hornet, one of the contenders for the multi-medium role combat aircraft deal.
With India expected to spend about US$112 billion on capital acquisition by the year 2016, the US is hoping to cash in. s_hemanth@dnaindia.net

There is of course the question of off-sets. For certain products the Indians are placing the figure as high as 30 per cent or even 50 per cent. How do you go about finding the right collaborators in India?

Off-sets are not an obstacle for us. Our will to invest in India is high and the off-set factor is not a big constraint. We want to invest in India because we feel it is one of the most promising markets in the world, whether for civil products or for military products. We have 250 people in India at the moment; we will have almost 700 people in 2012. To get access to the Indian market we have to invest, that's clear. In India we find the technological resources we are looking for. We are extremely happy with Bangalore where we have not just a design office but a research centre now being developed and we will have a design office for Airbus and Cassidian, our defence division. More globally, EADS has to be built on three pillars — one in Europe, certainly because our roots are in Europe, one in the United States because half of the world defence market and 40 per cent of the aeroplanes flying are in the U.S., but the third pillar has to be in emerging countries. Growth and dynamism will be with the emerging countries in future and India is certainly one of the most promising. It's a country where we can partner with local industry, where we could find technological resources, where we have one of our main partners for space. We are partners on helicopters, on Cassidian (defence projects) — for some products for the Eurofighter and certainly for Airbus. It means our four divisions can work in India and partner in India with Indian companies. The market is equal to the size of the country — huge.

A hub:The university will provide training not only for research and development but also to those coming out of the industrial training institutes in the State.

Bangalore: The proposal for a privately promoted aerospace university near Devanahalli, which was first mooted at the Global Investors Meet (GIM) in June, is likely to fructify after the Bangalore Aero Show in February, sources in the Government as well industry told The Hindu on Saturday.

V.P. Baligar, Principal Secretary, Commerce and Industries, said: “The State Government is only a facilitator for the private initiative to establish a dedicated university for aerospace near Devanahalli, near the Bengaluru International Airport.” The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) is also involved in the venture.

The Vice-Chairman of the Karnataka State Council of the CII, S. Chandrasekhar, said that the dedicated university would train personnel working at all levels of the industry. “The university will play a critical role in enabling Bangalore to function as a hub or a base for the aerospace industry,” Mr. Chandrasekhar said. He said the university would provide training not only for research and development but also to those coming out of the industrial training institutes in the State. The Task Force on Aerospace, headed by Chief Secretary S.V. Ranganath, “is closely monitoring the progress of the project,” he added.

He said a significant announcement may be made after the aero show in February.

Mr. Baligar said the aerospace park near Devanahalli was “in an advanced stage of completion.” Asked about the progress of the projects that were proposed during the GIM, Mr. Baligar said: “The progress has been really good, although things had slowed down somewhat because of panchayat elections in the State.”

Progress so far

More than 180 projects, out of a total of 389 that were proposed by investors during the GIM, had “taken off,” Mr. Baligar said. Twelve projects have already commenced production. Twenty more are “at an advanced stage of completion, and are likely come on stream in the next few months,” Mr. Baligar said.

Mr. Chandrasekhar, who is also managing director of Bhoruka Power Corporation Ltd., said the clutch of gas-based power projects proposed at the GIM were “awaiting” the laying of the gas pipeline by GAIL Ltd. The work on the pipeline is likely to be completed by 2012. However, the price at which gas would be supplied for the new power projects still remains a key imponderable.

The LNG currently hovers at about $10 per million British Thermal Unit (mmbtu). At this price, power would cost about Rs. 5 to Rs. 6 per unit, which would be a viable proposition, Mr. Chandrasekhar said. However, the problem was that there were currently no long-term contracts for LNG imports, which could pose risks for power projects, he said. The task force was examining the possibility of instituting a “canalising agency” that could facilitate assured supplies of LNG at spot prices for projects in the State, he said.

Bangalore, Jan 3 (IANS) India's Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) will soon invite expression of interest (EoI) from the aerospace industry to develop a 90-seater regional transport aircraft (RTA) for feeder service under public-private partnership, a senior official said Monday.

'An EoI will be floated soon for private participation in the design and development of an indigenous RTA for short-haul feeder service to cities and towns across the country,' state-run National Aerospace Laboratories (NAL) director A.R. Upadhya told reporters here.

The civilian RTA project has been approved by the 15-member high powered committee for national civil aircraft development, set up by the CSIR in May 2010 under the chairmanship of G. Madhavan Nair, former chairman of the state-run Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO).

'The committee has decided to set up a joint venture with state-run aeronautical organisations and the private industry led by a principal partner. The State Bank of India Capital Markets Ltd (SBICAPS) and IDBI Bank Ltd will be asked to develop a business model for marketing the regional aircraft,' Upadhya said.

The design and development of the first prototype is estimated to cost about Rs.4,500 crore ($1 billion) in a five-year timeline.

As per aviation market projections, the country will require about 500-600 regional aircraft, while the global market is estimated to be about 10-fold (5,000-6,000 aircraft).

The Bangalore-based NAL, which is part of the CSIR and a nodal agency for the project, will also be exploring overseas partners and vendors at the upcoming Aero India 2011 event on the outskirts of this tech hub next month.

'We will be making a presentation at the air show to the aerospace industry on the RTA project and explore participation by overseas firms in the proposed joint venture,' Upadhya said.

The government has recently sanctioned about Rs.50 crore to the high powered committee for preparing a feasibility report in the next three-four months.

'The report will decide on the configuration, airframe, sub-systems, engine and market potential. It will also study the option of having a 70-seater aircraft,' Upadhya pointed out.

The feasibility study will also decide if the aircraft should be fitted with turboprop engine or turbo jet engine.

'The design centre for the regional civilian aircraft project will be set up in Bangalore under the supervision of NAL. Private partners will be involved right from the design stage. We will also explore a joint venture for developing the engine with a global aerospace major,' Upadhya added.

Bid to make Aero India 2011 secure, foolproof on (http://www.deccanherald.com/content/127824/bid-make-aero-india-2011.html)

With security on the radar, the Ministry of Defence is making all-out efforts to organise a fool-proof, secure ‘Aero India’ show this time around.

Given the high-profile participants and displays, security arrangements at the air show will include use of radio frequency badges, CCTV surveillance at all points, fencing, under-vehicle scanning, baggage scanners, etc. Besides, the Ministry of Defence has directed the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) to appoint an official fabricator in the pavillion and the interiors for designing and construction of customised stalls, and advised that the exhibitors take the services of the official stand contractor. It said: “Details of personnel who construct/decorate stands/chalets other than the official stand contractors may be furnished in the format... given by the exhibitor concerned, along with a letter of authority nominating the contracting company for such service.”

Penalty

In case of exhibitors wishing to get their own fabricators, they will pay a penalty of Rs one lakh. And this, sources said, is to restrict the entry of unauthorised people into the site and keep the entire premises secure. Further, a workshop on the Indian defence procurement procedures, which garnered good interest at last year’s defence expo, and a workshop on defence offsets are said to be attracting participants. “These are the two most important decisions related to the defence policy in the country. The whole world is watching it and is eager to learn more about it,” a source said.

India's LCA moment arrives
Jan 10, 2011, 03.57am IST
BANGALORE: At 10.30am Monday, all eyes will be trained on Bangalore's skies as India's first homegrown aircraft powers out on its maiden journey. The indigenous Tejas Light Combat Aircraft (LCA), vilified for more than 20 years, will take off on completely Indian wings and many prayers.

It will be a historic moment for the Indian aerospace industry and a proud day for aerospace city Bangalore.
Defence minister A K Antony, his ministry, the defence top brass and a battery of aerospace experts will witness the launch at the HAL airport. The aircraft, costing Rs 17,000 cr, will be flown by an IAF test pilot and is likely to be in the air for 20-35 minutes.

India's first supersonic fighter aircraft, though nurtured in Bangalore, will be flying on an American engine. Bangalore is central to its development —the aircraft was conceived, designed, developed, tested and certified by Aeronautical Development Agency, and manufactured and assembled by HAL.

India's own fighter jet Tejas to join air force Monday (http://www.sify.com/news/india-s-own-fighter-jet-tejas-to-join-air-force-monday-news-national-lbjpaihiihj.html)

Bangalore, Jan 9 (IANS) India's long-delayed, indigenously-developed, multi-role combat aircraft Tejas will join the Indian Air Force (IAF) Monday for initial operational clearance (IOC) in this aerospace hub.

Considered to be the world's smallest military aircraft with a single seat, Tejas will form a 200-strong fleet for the IAF to replace the ageing Russian made MiG-21 fleet, a senior official said here.

Defence Minister A.K. Antony will hand over the service certificate of Tejas to Chief of Air Staff Air Chief Marshal P.V. Naik to enable IAF fighter pilots to fly the light combat aircraft (LCA) for final operational clearance and its induction as the country's potent strike force by 2012, the official told IANS, speaking on condition of anonymity.

The fly-by-wire supersonic fighter, which took over a generation in the making with chronic delays and cost escalations, has been developed by the state-run Aeronautical Defence Agency (ADA) and manufactured by Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) in Bangalore.

The successive delays caused by multiple factors, including sanctions by the US over a decade ago against India for conducting the second nuclear test in May 1998, led the project cost to rise to a whopping Rs.5,778 crore from the initial estimate of Rs.3,300 crore in the mid-1980s.

'Initially pilots fly four aircraft to check all its parametres, including flight controls, Mach speed and weaponisation for FOC and induction into the fleet as frontline fighter jets,' the officer said.

Under the limited series production, HAL is manufacturing eight aircraft for clearance flights and will take up the air force's initial order to deliver 20 jets to form the first Tejas squadron. It will be based at the Sulur air base near Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu.

The IAF has also placed an additional order in 2010 for 20 more Tejas for the second squadron to be raised at Kayathir near Tuticorin in the southern state where the air force is setting up a new base this decade.

'The Tejas handing over will be another red letter day for the Indian aerospace industry a decade after its first prototype made a maiden flight Jan 4, 2001,' former ADA director Kota Harinarayan recalled.

The lean and mean flying machine is powered by the F404-GE-IN20 engine from the US-based General Electric as the indigenously developed Kaveri engine is still undergoing advance trials.

The last test flight of the aircraft was carried out Dec 15 at the new aeronautical test range of DRDO at Chitradurga in central Karnataka, about 200 km from here, when its advanced prototype vehicle (PV-5) dropped a bomb successfully on target.

A naval version of the LCA for aircraft carriers of the Indian Navy is also under development.

Bangalore: The 26/11 terror attack is rather fresh in the armed forces memory. With the aero show coming up between February 9 and 13 at the Yelahanka air base, the IAF is making sure nothing about the campus or its logistics are out in public.
A Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) and media delegation which visited the air base on Thursday to take stock of preparations for the upcoming event, were told that in the interest of national security, the IAF wont permit a tour of the campus and a photo shoot therein.
A senior IAF officer said,We all understand the implications of 26/11.In fact, live telecast of its aftermath at the Taj helped anti-national elements spot Indian forces, logistics, personnel and positions. It was a difficult situation.
He continued: Given that public information about the campus and preparations could affect security,we request no video or photo shoots be done that could reveal the areas physical characteristics.
While conceding to IAFs objection,BBMP officials asked if they would need any help in clearing areas around the campus, particularly the garbage dump.
The IAF official said: We do have a problem of bird-hits which is why we would like the garbage dump and lakes to be cleaned.Measures are already under way.We thank the delegation for volunteering to help the IAF.

M&M flying into Hyderabad for aerospace SEZ
Published: Monday, Nov 1, 2010, 3:00 IST
By KV Ramana | Place: Hyderabad | Agency: DNA

Mahindra & Mahindra is expected to pick Hyderabad as the location for its special economic zone (SEZ) dedicated to aerospace, after having zeroed in on Bangalore earlier.

Though finer details such as the total cost of the project and the schedules are still not known, the facility is expected to start with an investment of about Rs300 crore.

The Mahindra group recently completed the acquisition of two Australian companies — Gippsland Aeronautics, a manufacturer of small aircraft, and Aerostaff, an aircraft component manufacturer. It is now working on a strategy to emerge as a significant player in small turboprop aircraft.

Sources said the SEZ would be a part of the same strategy though it is not clear if the group would manufacture aircraft in the facility. It is also expected to help the group foray into related markets using the offset opportunities.

Meanwhile, aviation related activities in Hyderabad are expected to move to the next level with Sikorsky’s first helicopter cabin getting ready for export on November 23 from the existing aerospace SEZ at Adibhatla on the city outskirts.

Bangalore-based Bharat Fritz Werner Limited (BFW), a manufacturer of machine tools, has drawn up an ambitious plan to expand its business through both organic and inorganic routes for a capital expenditure of Rs 350 crore over the next five years.

“We are actively looking at acquisition of small and medium sized machine tool companies in Europe. We have shortlisted some companies in Germany, Italy and Spain, and are in advanced talks with them,” S N Mishra, vice chairman, BFW, said.

Though the company is yet to decide on the exact amount of investment for acquiring companies, it has set apart Rs 150-160 crore for the purpose, he said.

He told reporters here today, BFW plans to carve out its aerospace and spindles business divisions into two separate subsidiaries to grow the business. The company is also looking at setting up two separate manufacturing units for aerospace components and spindles. Spindles are used in manufacturing metallic components.

He said, the company has earmarked Rs 33 crore towards setting up a new plant for manufacturing machine tool spindles in Hosur and plans to acquire around 30 acres for the purpose. The plant, which will come up in the next one year, will cater to the needs of machine tool builders and users worldwide. The spindles will be in the range of 2,500 rpm to 24,000 rpm to match typical requirements.

It is also setting aside Rs 45 crore for setting up a new unit to manufacture aerospace components at its existing plant in Bangalore. It had ventured into aerospace business two years ago and has acquired AS9100B certification and the Defence Offset Facilitation Agency (DOFA) licence.

The company has also earmarked Rs 115 crore to acquire new machinery and add shop floors to accommodate new lines of products from its existing factory in Bangalore, he said.

“The machine tool industry is poised for an exponential growth and BFW wants to be one of the key drivers of this growth. Over the past four decades we have been constantly innovating and delivering new products. We are looking at an exciting and aggressive growth for us and the industry in the years to come,” Mishra said.

Shailesh Sheth, director, BFW, said the company expects to secure significant orders from aircraft makers and defence sector as a result of offset clause. It has already secured an order from Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) for the supply of small precision-machined components like turbine blades for jet propulsion engine made out of special aluminium alloy metal.

“We are also in talks with some 15 companies abroad for manufacturing aerospace components and hope to bag sizeable orders in the near future,” Sheth said.

BFW is likely to close the present fiscal with a turnover of Rs 330 crore, a growth of 65 per cent over last year

BBMP has fig leaf solution for landfill
Jayashree Nandi, TNN, Feb 2, 2011, 12.09am IST
Bangalore: If the Common Wealth Games (CWG) authorities in Delhi tried to hide poor infrastructure, Bangalore will spread a plastic sheet over its garbage and tell the world that it's a hi-tech city.

It is the BBMP's peekaboo job: with foreign guests flying in for the Aero India show, the civic authority plans to cover up its garbage mess at Mavallipura, about 8.5km from the Yelahanka airbase in North Bangalore. The sheets will be on for the duration of Asia's biggest airshow.

Instead of scientifically recycling the huge dumpyard of 600 tonne of unsegregated waste, the BBMP on Tuesday began laying blue plastic sheets over it. They serve a dual purpose: avoid bird-hits and cover the landfill, that poses huge health hazards.

At the landfill, there is every kind of waste, from carcasses, syringes, massive restaurant waste, other biomedical waste, chemical waste, huge loads of plastic and other filth on the mountains of filth. The stench spreads even kilometres away from the spot. Packs of dogs and scavenging birds forage in the waste.

The massive site is spread across 45 acres, and garbage covers around six acres. Here, unsegregated waste is dumped, with little or no recycling. The leachate discharged by the landfill washes into almost all the water bodies, including three lakes around the site.

A BBMP chief engineer, who was supervising the staff covering the area on Tuesday, told The Times of India: "Due to the aero show, the government has ordered us to cover the site with plastic sheets. This will minimize bird hits. In a couple of days, we will cover the entire site."

VILLAGERS FURIOUS

The locals are outraged. "It is a stupid idea. We will not accept this temporary covering of the landfill. For the past seven years, because of this site, health problems have increased drastically in the village. The leachate that seeps into the water bodies has made the water here toxic. People don't even wash clothes in these lakes. We have been protesting and questioning the authorities, but they are still indifferent," said panchayat member and taluk president, Srinivas R. Not even an effluent treatment plant is functioning here, he added.

During the past few editions of the airshow, the landfill was not covered. "This year, the government wants us to be very strict and clear everything," said the BBMP official.

Villagers say the landfill causes serious problems, especially during the monsoons. "None of the students in this school can drink ground water, nor can they use water from the lakes. In the monsoons, the leachate flows into the lakes. Many students suffer from various kinds of fevers and infections due to the landfill. Authorities have done nothing about it. NGOs have tested the water and found it to be very toxic," said Tejawati M N, a government school teacher.

HORROR HEAPS

* Mavallipura is a village about 20 km north of Bangalore. In 2003, H Bailappa, a local landowner, leased his land to the erstwhile Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (now BBMP) to dump the city's solid waste
* BBMP later gave the contract to Ramky for management of waste
* According to villagers, the immunity level of children has fallen drastically. Dengue, chikungunya and cancer cases are on the rise. This is due to toxic leachate contamination and breeding of mosquitoes
* According to the municipal solid waste rules, landfills should be at least 20 km away from the airbase -- this is just 8.5km away
* During the airshow, garbage trucks will offload waste in the evenings

Bangalore: The Karnataka government is setting up a dedicated Aerospace Park near the Bangalore international airport at Devanahalli on the city's outskirts to attract global majors and small and medium enterprises (SMEs), an official said on Thursday.

'Of the proposed 1,000-acre Aerospace Park, about 800 acres of land has been acquired by the state government to facilitate global aerospace majors and several SMEs set up manufacturing and ancillary units for domestic and export markets,' state's Industrial Development Commissioner Raj Kumar Khatri told reporters here.

The state government will earmark about 250 acres in the park to create a special economic zone (SEZ) with incentives and facilities offered by the central government for 100 percent dedicated export units.

'Being the country's aerospace hub, we are showcasing Bangalore as an ideal destination for investing in this sunrise sector. The presence of various state-run defence research and development organisations, scientific and educational institutions and defence behemoths such as Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) and Bharat Electronics Ltd (BEL) provides an ecosystem to promote the aerospace industry in a big way,' Khatri said.

As India's tech hub with a huge talent pool, Bangalore already boasts of being home to global aerospace majors such as Boeing, Airbus, Snecma, Rolls-Royce, Honeywell and BAE Systems.

Coinciding with the eighth Aero India 2011 trade fair in the city from Feb 9-13, the state government has scheduled a series of meetings with global firms and business delegations to discuss investments in wholly-owned subsidiaries, joint ventures and expansion of their existing operations in the Indian sub-continent.

'Business delegations from Germany, France, Russia, the US and other countries will explore investment opportunities in the Aerospace Park in their meetings with the state chief minister (B.S. Yeddyurappa) and top officials during the upcoming air show,' Khatri said.

A 35-member American delegation, led by Indo-US Business Council president Ron Somers and representatives from Boeing, Lockheed Martin, Honeywell and Raytheon will call on the chief minister Feb 8 to discuss investment proposals.

Similarly, Rolls-Royce India president Anil Shrikhande and Honeywell Technology Lab's Krishna Mikkilineni will call on the state's Industry Minister Murgesh Nirani and officials Feb 9, followed by a delegation from North Carolina in the US, headed by its Commerce Department Secretary J. Keith Crisco Feb 10.

'We are looking forward to sign a few agreements with global and Indian firms for investments in the aerospace sector and setting up their operations in the upcoming park,' Khatri added.

Lockheed Martin India Ltd director Jagmohan Singh, UK-based Wolver Hampton city council head Joy Patel and a delegation from the French aerospace industries association (Gifas) will also be calling on the chief minister to discuss their interests in the Aerospace Park.

BANGALORE: After the Global Investment Summit held in the state recently, the Aero India 2011 would be one of the leading contenders for bringing global players in defence, civil and aerospace sectors on one platform.
Highlighting the growth, organisers of the event have said there are more aircraft from the civil aviation sector as compared to the military.
"Out of the 97 aircraft, 47 are from international participants," said the organisers said and added that there was 46 per cent of defence whereas there was 54 per cent civilian sector participation. Adding that 64 countries had been invited, nearly 40 of them were participating in the event. "We would be looking at providing a level playing field, indigenous production and export potential with this show," said a source.
Adding to the big players, they said small and medium enterprises are also participating in the event.
"There would be nearly 2830 per cent of SMEs from India and other countries," an official said.
Adding that there were expecting many high powered delegates, they said this would comprise ministers, air chiefs and other personnel from procurements from various countries.

Seeking to take advantage of the Aero India event, Karnataka has set a target of attracting $100 billion investments in the aviation sector in the coming 10 years.

Chief minister B S Yeddyurappa and state's chief secretary SV Ranganath during a meeting with delegates of US India Business Council (USIBC) held here on the eve of Aero India show said business environment was conducive in Bangalore and the government plans to attract over $100 billion in next 10 years.

The state government has set up an aerospace park near Bengaluru International Airport, Yeddyurappa told the delegation.

"The city is already recognised as aerospace hub of the country and has more than 65% of the country's investment in the sector here. Besides big presence of public sector enterprises, many international private players have invested in aerospace sector in the state," Ranganath said.

He said a study conducted by Federation of Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industries has brought out the fact that 90 per cent of the investors have expressed that they would like to reinvest in the state.

Leading the 10th Executive Aerospace and Defence Mission to Aero India 2011, Admiral US (Retd) Walter G Doran said aerospace companies in US were looking forward to invest in the state.

Air Marshal T J Master, member of joint aerospace task force, said besides technology innovation centre, an aerospace university was in the offing to cater the human resources for the aviation sector.

Sixty one years ago, with India becoming a republic on January 26, 1950, the Royal Indian Air Force became the Indian Air Force. Its chief was only a three-star air marshal — R. Ivelaw Chapman— and the second-in-command, “Deputy Air Commander and senior Air Staff Officer”, was Air Vice Marshal Subroto Mukherjee. The force was headquartered in Delhi, but some of the important training colleges and other establishments were located, among other places, in Bangalore. Bangalore was also one of the five large air force bases, the others being Agra, Kanpur, Poona and Madras.

There was a total of 744 registered civil aircraft and 463 licensed ground engineers in January, 1950. One wonders whether even today — 61 years after India’s birth as a republic — there are 744 civilian aircraft in the inventory of New Delhi. There were also at least ten prominent aviation companies (most of them private), perhaps more than what we have today.

An additional bonus for India in 1950 was the existence of various flying clubs across the country. And expectedly, the pioneer of civil aviation was the house of the Tatas. Thus, in 1928, was founded the Aero Club of India, care of Tata Sons Ltd, at Connaught Circus in New Delhi. This club constituted the “parent association of Indian flying clubs”. Simultaneously in 1928, three other institutions were established; the Delhi Flying Club, Bombay Flying Club and Bengal Flying Club in Willingdon (now Safdarjung) airport, Juhu and Barrackpore airstrips respectively.

Dramatic developments took place post 1947 as the dispersed centres of aeronautics got concentrated in Bangalore, thereby signalling the city’s spectacular rise as the hub of India’s aviation industry, research and development. Today Bangalore has emerged as the “aviation monopoly capital of India”. Except a few small units spread across Lucknow, Kanpur, Koraput and Nashik, most centres are located in Bangalore. The city stands out as a model of India’s enterprise in a highly skilled sector.

One of the most ambitious Bangalore-based projects is the manufacture of Saras, the twin turbo-propeller business and commuter transport aircraft. Having already received funds worth 1.58 billion from various government agencies, many public and private sector industries are participating in the venture. Reportedly, the IAF is also a “target customer”. It has also been forecast that at least 250 aircraft are likely to be ordered over 15 years.

Although India has a large land mass and an equally large population, aircraft as a means of people’s transport has, till recently, been accorded a low priority. Understandably then, military aviation preceded non-military aerial transport. Bangalore, nevertheless, has continued on its onward march first as the military aviation base, and now as the Indian aviation capital. What makes the city unique is the confidence shown by both government and private entrepreneurs to set up shop there. Bangalore is embedded in the psyche of both Indian and foreign entrepreneurs as the ideal and growing hub of both civil and military aviation. And that is the bottom line.

Good to see many global aerospace companies to setup/expand their R&D/engineering units in Bangalore including Boeing ,Airbus, Goodrich, Honeywell ,Saab etc.Apart from indian companies like M&M,wipro, dynamite,Axis etc. Thanks to aero India. truely a great event.

Here are a few pics I could manage to click.
It was mentioned that tickets would be available at the venue, but the counter where they were supposed to sell, not a single soul was there :bash: :bash:
Getting the tickets is such a pain. Even for tickets booked online, they need to go to the bank or to the venue and stand in the queue to get the RFID tag. Hope, I get tickets for this weekend.

Bangalore: Even by big catch standards, this is a bit of a Godzilla. The Indian Air Force is looking for 126 fighter jets - a deal that could be worth 11.5 billion dollars. For the next four days, aviation companies from around the world will try their best to hit that jackpot. (See Pics: Aero India 2011 - India's biggest Air Show)

But that isn't the only deal worth lusting after at Aero India 2011, which began today at the Yelahanka Air Force Station in Bangalore.

The Indian Air Force is also looking to strike a deal to replace its aging Cheetah helicopters with up to 197 new choppers.

There's pending business too. The Air Force is acquiring 22 advance attack helicopters, replacing its transport fleet, co-producing a stealth fighter with Russia and producing an indigenous medium combat aircraft with stealth features.

LCA takes wing as Tata watches (http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/bangalore/LCA-takes-wing-as-Tata-watches/articleshow/7463835.cms)
Prashanth G N, TNN, Feb 10, 2011, 05.18am IST
BANGALORE: The Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) got a shot in the arm from this man at a time when it was about to be shelved, and on Wednesday, it received appreciation from the very same man who saw the aircraft fly in the air show. The LCA got Initial Operational Clearance (IOC) almost 10 years after he had intervened to save the project.

Ratan Tata is not a man to miss Aero India. He was here in 2007 and is back again at the 2011 show. Quietly slipping into the audience in the front row, Tata chatted up with friends and watched military aircraft display their might. Twenty minutes into the show, Tata perked up when he saw five LCAs making a fly-past in formation. And then a single LCA offered a breathtaking display of its manoeuvrability for 10 minutes, leaving the audience gasping.

"I think the LCA is a very impressive aircraft. The LCA fly-past was very impressive,'' Tata said.

Thales, Axis Aerospace form JV
(http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/news-by-industry/transportation/airlines-/-aviation/thales-axis-aerospace-form-jv/articleshow/7472760.cms)

BANGALORE: Thales, Europe's biggest maker of defence electronics, is floating a joint venture with Axis Aerospace & Technologies (AAT), an Indian engineering services company, with an initial investment of $50 million to set up state-ofthe art flight training centre in Bangalore.

Axis, which is backed by member of parliament and former telecom entrepreneur Rajeev Chandrasekhar's private equity fund Jupiter Capital , will house simulators in a facility at the Devanahalli Aerospace Park.

The first of its kind joint venture in India, will initially have three full flight simulators which have a capacity to train around 2,000 pilots a year. Thales will supply the simulator equipment and provide management expertise in establishing and maintaining the centre, while AAT will operate the centre locally.

"India is key market for us and we are excited to forge a strategic partnership with AAT who are very focused and passionate about the aerospace and defence simulation markets, and will be working closely on various business initiatives together,” said Francois Dupont, -managing director of Thales India.

He said that in 2009 Thales India's revenues were around 30 million euros and it employed 300 staff at 8 locations. “The facility will help domestic airlines realize significant cost savings and better manage the scarce pilot resources which the aviation industry is at present facing due to growth in the aviation sector. Two international airlines have agreed to use this facility ,” said Sudhakar Gande, vice-chairman of AAT. Gande said that they expect to achieve a revenue of Rs 250 crore by March this year.

“As the aviation industry grows , there are two related segments which today have a very strong potential for growth in India , namely the maintenance, repair and overhaul and the training and simulation market,” says Rajiv Chib , associate director - aerospace and defence practice at consulting firm PricewaterhouseCoopers .

Gande said that CADES, an Axis Group company will be setting up a dedicated development center for the design of aerostructures for Premium AEROTEC GmbH (PAG) a subsidiary of European consortium EADS .

The aerospace industry is important to Indias strategic and economic interests and is characterised by high growth potential.Karnataka provides a balanced ecosystem for manufacturing and services companies. While many large firms like operate from Bangalore, other new companies are establishing operations in the citys outskirts,in key industrial belts surrounding Bangalore and in north Karnataka. The growth of other allied industries has also helped the aviation manufacturing industry. The state is also unique as it has a large density of aerospace institutions and has the potential of developing into an innovation and R&D hub.
Propelled by an increase in defence spending and a growing commercial aviation market, the Indian aerospace industry has become one of the fastest-growing aerospace markets in the world. The rapid growth of this industry has attracted major global aerospace companies to India and has incentivised domestic aerospace players to increase and deepen operations.
Indias aerospace Industry indicates that India is rapidly building capabilities to emerge as a preferred destination for manufacturing of aerospace components.India has skills and competencies in areas that include engineering, production, etc. These capabilities have been recognised and harnessed by foreign companies outsourcing manufacturing work to India.
The Indian aerospace industry is one of the fastest-growing aerospace markets in the world due to an increase in defence spending, growing commercial aviation market, rising technological expertise and high levels of technical expertise and knowledge.
According to CII-PWC report, some of the important factors driving growth in manufacturing in Indias Aerospace Industry are:

Domestic Aircraft Demand -

The demand for aircrafts, especially in Asia,is expected to grow as the world economy recovers.According to estimates by leading aircraft manufacturers,India will continue to be the fastest growing country in terms of air travel for the next 20 years.Foreign aircraft manufacturers view Indias demand potential as an opportunity to outsource manufacturing work, partly due to offset requirements, but mostly to derive cost benefits.

Cost Advantage -

India offers cost advantages that vary in magnitude across the value chain.CII-PWC carried out a survey among aerospace majors,in which respondents indicated that the savings are highest for IT and systems implementation activities in the value chain.Cost savings can range between 15 to 25 per cent for manufacturing, depending on the type of component. These savings are expected in labour intensive processes with import of raw materials. In fact,in some cases local sourcing of raw materials and parts can increase the cost savings by an additional 10-20 per cent.

Talent Pool -

Global aerospace majors are facing a shortage of engineering talent.India has a large talent pool of English-speaking engineering graduates;approximately five lakh engineers graduate each year.
Karnataka is becoming one of Indias most dynamic states! The state government is positioning Karnataka as a major investment destination for a range of industries that include IT,auto, steel and aerospace.
With the establishment of Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) in Bangalore in 1940,Karnataka has come to be regarded as a pioneer in the aerospace industry. The state is positioned as an aerospace destination due to the activities of numerous aerospace companies and PSUs engaged in manufacturing, design and development, and Maintenance,Repair and Overhaul (MRO).In addition, several educational, scientific and technical educational institutions are fostering domain expertise in IT,engineering and design skills that can be leveraged by aerospace majors.
The future will also see SMEs in US and Europe building a presence in the Indian aerospace market by working with DPSUs such as HAL and other companies in its supply chain.Similarly, there will be a growing number of aerospace suppliers in the private sector who will also offer the opportunity to partner with lower tier suppliers of aerospace OEMs.

CAE inaugurated its new aerospace and defence complex in Bangalore on February in the presence of representatives of India's airlines and defence forces, Canada's High Commission to India, as well as company executives and employees. Located close to Bengaluru International Airport, the complex is headquarters for CAE's operations in India and home to a majority of its India-based employees.

In the 116000 square-foot complex, CAE designs and develops defence training systems for India's defence forces and operates an engineering centre of excellence where visual databases and other software components for CAE's simulators are developed. The facility also houses CAE's Bangalore aviation training centre, the first independent aviation training centre in India.

The six-bay capacity centre currently offers Airbus A320 and Boeing 737 pilot training on three CAE-built full-flight simulators. More than 1,500 pilots trained at the centre last year, including pilots from Indian-based airlines such as Air India, Go Air, IndiGo, Kingfisher Airlines, Spicejet and commercial pilots of the Indian Air Force. Other customers include Fly Wings Aviation and SriLankan Airlines. The training centre is part of the CAE-Airbus Training Services Cooperation agreement.

India is of strategic importance to CAE and the new aerospace and defence complex demonstrates the Company's commitment to India. CAE has been active in the Indian market for the past 40 years, starting with the sale of simulators, and now offers comprehensive training solutions for India's civil aviation and defence markets. CAE's workforce in India has grown from 13 employees in 2004 to more than 300 today.

CAPA AeroPark, a world first aviation university and training campus being developed in India, today announced plans to bring forward its launch date in response to calls from the industry.

Peter Harbison, Chairman, CAPA AeroPark stated that, “Since we announced in November 2010 that CAPA and SCDC had entered into a US$125 million JV to establish CAPA AeroPark, the response from airlines and airports has been overwhelming. There is quite clearly an urgent need for training to support the 20% market growth being achieved in India.”

CAPA AeroPark will service training needs for India, the Middle East and Asia and is projected to handle more than 10,000 students per annum by 2015.

Mr Harbison added, “Aside from civil aviation requirements, announcements at Aero India 2011 have clearly demonstrated huge potential in the aerospace sector, in both research and manufacturing. But this requires a skilled workforce with specialist education and expertise. CAPA AeroPark will enable the emergence of these new industries in India, resulting in a significant positive contribution to economic development.”

CAPA AeroPark will establish satellite academies in New Delhi and Mumbai by the end of 2011. The flagship campus on a 50 acre greenfield site off Sarjapur Road, Bangalore will be ready to receive students by late 2012. However, due to stronger than expected market conditions, the project will now see the addition of a new, state-of-the-art urban campus in Bangalore, set to open by September 2011.

“With our partners, SCDC, we are delighted to have secured a premium grade commercial development for CAPA AeroPark, in the prestigious Whitefield district of Bangalore, which offers up to 300,000 square feet of built-up area with further room for expansion. Construction is nearing completion and we will shortly commence the internal fit-out to meet the specifications of an international standard aviation training centre,” commented Mr. Harbison.

The Whitefield campus will offer a comprehensive range of vocational and academic courses for pilots, engineers, cabin crew, management, air traffic controllers and regulators. It will host not only computer-based classrooms, libraries and workshops but plans include setting-up India’s most comprehensive Safety and Emergency Procedures Centre. The world’s leading aviation education and training providers have already committed to partner with CAPA AeroPark.

Meanwhile, locations for the satellite academies in New Delhi and Mumbai have been shortlisted and the greenfield 50 acre site in Bangalore is being prepared for development.

Mr. K.N.Balasubramanyam, Chairman of the substantial Bangalore-based SCDC Group stated that, “we are very excited to fast-track the opening of CAPA AeroPark at Whitefield in Bangalore, while continuing with our vision to develop a fully integrated greenfield campus off Sarjapur Road. This initiative is a clear demonstration of our commitment to delivering and responding to industry requirements.”

Indian 'flying car' looks to the future

New Zealand Herald
http://www.nzherald.co.nz/world/news/article.cfm?c_id=2&objectid=10705837

It would be the ultimate answer to the daily horror of gridlock on the traffic-choked, exhaust-filled roads of Indian cities.

Unassumingly parked next to some of the world's most lethal warplanes, a converted 800cc Maruti hatchback has stolen some of the thunder from the supersonic exhibits at the Aero India 2011 air show in the southern city of Bangalore.

The attraction? Rotating blades fitted on the four corners of the roof, and a vacuum section around the tyres which - its inventor insists - gives the car a vertical lift-off capability, allowing it to soar over any traffic jam.

Bangalore: Karnataka, which made its debut in the recently concluded Aero India 2011, now has something to cheer about. A number of memoranda of understanding (MoUs) have been signed between the state government and private companies, reaffirming Bangalore's stature as a major aerospace destination.

With stiff competition emerging from Hyderabad, which has, of late, been vigorously wooing aerospace companies, the state government managed to ink MoUs with six companies, Wipro, Mahindra Aerospace Private Limited, Karnataka CAC Tech Private Limited, Ashik Enterprises, Agni Aero, Adventure Academy Private Limited and Chandan Properties Private Limited.

The six companies can now start operations in the 984-acre aerospace park, to come up near the Bengaluru International Airport. These companies will be involved in the design and manufacture of aerospace actuators, components, structures, assemblies and turbine components, along with defence products, aeronautical and semi-conductor cutting tools.

Besides, three Bangalore-based companies, Silicon Hub Technology Solutions Private Limited, Electronics Manufacturing and Design Services (India) Private Limited and Southern Electronic Private Limited, have signed expressions of interest (EoIs) indicating keenness to set up projects in the aerospace sector in Karnataka.

These companies will be involved in the design of semi-conductor and embedded systems, aerospace components and providing MRO (maintenance, repair, overhauling) facilities. "The total investment expected from these projects is `422.31 crore. The activity is expected to generate direct employment for 1,840 people," commissioner in the commerce and industry department, Raj Kumar Khatri, said.

During the Aero India show held at the Air Force Station, Yelahanka, the state government participated as an exhibitor showcasing the 984-acre aerospace park, which will house an aerospace-specific Special Economic Zone (SEZ), spread over 252 acres within the park. "A number of business-to-business meetings were held between the state government and representatives from Rolls Royce, Honeywell, Dassault Aviation, GIFAS and Belgium Aerospace," Khatri said.

Andhra Government has already laid foundation stone for Aerospace SEZ in Hyd which will create 10000 jobs Yeddy only allots land to his kith and kin but not to any companies seeking land Karnataka has not seen any government initiative from 2004 First it was Dharam (good for Nothing) then it was HDK (busy sleeping in Villages )and now BSY (Busy saving his chair ) SMK was the only one who did something for Bangalore ,All this 3 illiterate CM's are good for nothing ,Neither have they improved Bangalore Infra nor doing anything to improve them .This Aero Space Park was proposed in June 2005 still it's not operational ,even Brigade Group Works Faster than Government .Some Losers are running BIAL GVK group when they have 400 acre notified SEZ what the hell are the doing they have BOT only for 30 years 2 out of 30 is already over ,Look @ GMR they are damn Aggressive.

Hyderabad scores due to:

Better implementation of SEZ policy

State government creating infrastructure specifically targeted at the aerospace and defence-focused companies

Land costs are generally seen to be lower than those in Karanataka, a major incentive for potential investors looking to set up manufacturing, maintenance, repair and overhaul facilities in the aviation sector

Bangalore loses out due to:

Infrastructure issues have been a serious cause for concern for existing as well as potential investors. Transportation bottleneck a big dampener

Karnataka’s poor record in power generation growth is not expected to improve anytime soon

Karnataka’s special economic zone policy yet to be implemented to its fullest degree. The proposed aerospace SEZ yet to take off

Andhra goes all out to woo investors

While Bangalore still ranks ahead when it comes to attracting attention from the global aerospace and defense vendors, the gap between the two cities is closing faster than anticipated , as the Andhra Pradesh government goes all out to attract investors, in what it clearly believes is a sunrise sector.

Moral of the Story
Even we should have Elected Congress Government
