Here's my biggest city, Westside. It's a part of the london region (modified), and this was the first city I made.

I've been playing this region since the first day SC4 was out and the goal is to get the regions filled with great cities:-)

I have used money cheats, since I just want to build as much as possible:)

Populations:

Region: 3.494.160
Westside: 776.893

Here's first a overview of the region:

Here you see most of Westside:

And a closer view:

Awsome city! Nice selection of buildings and density. You placed your landmarks in very nice places too. I only noticed Empire! The street grid is nice but small in some areas. I also like your extensive monorail system!

Very cool city.

That area was totally demolished a few years ago (maybe 20-30), before that it was a lot denser but also really messed up. The cars could get nowhere and the area was more of less out of control. I've actualy redeveloped most of the city more than one time and I'm finally getting a better organized city now. Transpotation seems to work great too. You still see a lot of areas with no buildings, this is caused by all the demolishing I've been doing lately. Hopefully it will be denser now if I stop redeveloping all the time:D

Education, if your sims get more education they will increase you office demand.

Tip = you should create a good education system (schools, colleges, libriries, museuns, facultys, university, ...) and then just let the time pass, you will see the office demand increase.

But the school grade is already high and there is still a lot of demand on industry.

Is it possible to make a region with no industires ??

I have a region with industry. Create a city next to the one you want to have the office space. Place good connections and have them commute. Do not try to place only industry though. That is really hard to get a mix of. Best of luck! :)

PS. to have a high demand the education rate must be over 120 and even better if over 160.

Westside news:

The city council decided that Westside was getting too many bridges, destroying the overall feeling of the city so the found a new way to get the cars around without using bridges. The regions best engineers made it possible to make a new high capacity route under the river. Here, 2 years after the first construction, the mayor of Westside is proud to announce the new MLM Tunnel opened.

TV Stations and journalists from all over the country was gathered to withness this great event and here's a few of their photos:

You need to raise the land where you want the tunnel, then you build your tunnel and then you lower the land again. Be very carefull not to destroy the tunnel entrances when lowering the land, if that happens you have to start all over:bash: I "rehearsed" on another region before I made this one and it takes a little time to figure out the best way. A good way to get the land around the entrances straight is to build one tile of road on all the tiles near the entrance. That will level the area but also takes some practice. Just play with it and you'll get it done:)

Oh and be very carefull when using those terraforming tools;)

Goto the folder where your regions are saved (for me its in the "my documents" folder)
Click on the folder for region whos name you want to change, inside should be a file called region.ini, open that file up there should be a line in there like this (name = London) just change the London part to what ever you want to change it to.

Do you mean the size of each of the cities? They are controlled by a file called "config.bmp" that is in every region folder. I'm not sure what happens if you change it but you could try (you should probably try it with a new region so you don't destroy anything if it doesn't work;) )

If that doesn't work you can probably find some info on http://www.simtropolis.com:)

Amazing city. I'd love to see a tutorial on how to make such a thing by you.

mlm
March 1st, 2004, 12:26 AM
First an region update, I'm soon running out of space to build on:

http://www.mikaellykmadsen.dk/sc4/47.jpg

And the transportation map:

http://www.mikaellykmadsen.dk/sc4/49.jpg

I'm not sure I would be able to make a tutorial but I can tell you about some of the things I've done.

First: I CHEAT. Yes, I use money cheats to get all the money I can spend.
I've explain in the first posts why so no reason to get into that again.
(You can find many lots on both www.simtropolis.com and www.simcity.com that gives you tons of money).
On www.simtropolis.com you'll also find other things that will help you get a huge city,
like traffic patches, super demand patches etc.

I've been playing this region since the game was released*,
so it takes some time (*game was released about 13 months ago)
.

I started out with the london region. My first city was the biggest one (today) right in the middle.
Here's a screenshot that shows the first city (yellow part are industrial areas):

http://www.mikaellykmadsen.dk/sc4/48.jpg

The main city (the red one) has probably been torn down and rebuild again a few times but I started it with
a mix of both res, com and ind zones just to get it started.
I started building highways, subways when I started, otherwise you'll spend a lot of time later implating things like these.

I soon decided to completely re-design the region, it's also a good idea to do early if you for example
wants some large mountains.

Basicly I've just kept on building smaller cities around the main one. I have industrial areas spread all around the
region and commercial/residential areas are more or less mixed everywhere.

I prefere to make my lot 6 x 6 in the dense res/com areas, otherwise too much space will be used for streets.
Be sure to make a lot of parks, place landmarks and plant trees, that will make your sims a lot more happy
and keep the buildings from abandonment (is that a word??).
I hate those old empty ugly building so I normally destroy them as soon as they appear.
They don't appear that much anymore since I now have the above mentioned things en masse.

I've now started to build less dense areas in the outer areas, which gives it a more realistc look.

I can't really give you a more detailed tutorial cause there wans't really any large masterplan. I've just kept on building.

A good way to start is to go to www.simtropolis.com and find lots and bat buildings you like.
I've downloaded schools, landmarks, arenas, parks, growable buildings,
power plants, garbage disposals and a lot more things that all helps me build a better city.

I hope this will help you a bit, but the best thing is really just to get started with your new region and maybe try
some different things. You can always just find the bulldozer and do it over again if you don't like what you see. :)

RobinHood
March 6th, 2004, 11:34 PM
Wow that's great. Looks like you're gonna hit the 7 million mark soon :p

I'm kinda curious though, did you start out with a highway or did you, before you started zoning/building, lay down the entire infrastructure?? Or did you perhaps make that as you went along and maybe later re-did it?? Cause the infrastructure is what it's all about huh.

Oh yeah, I also make those 6 by 6 squares, well 7 by 7 if you count the road.

mlm
March 7th, 2004, 01:28 AM
To be honest, I can't remember how/when I built the roads etc in the beginning. But now I lay down roads, highways, subways, monorails, trainstracks atc. before I zone anything. Then I sometimes have to make small corrections but it's not much. The biggest problems comes when I need to implant etc a monorail line into one of the older cities, that can cause some frustration. That's also why i try to build everything like that from the beginning now in my new cities.

RobinHood
March 8th, 2004, 03:35 PM
Oh I see, that makes sense.

Doesn't that cost a crapload of money though??

Hi Kevinkhoo1986 and thanx for the nice words. Let me try to answer your questions:

mlm are u playing expansion set or original simcity 4? cause some of the nice buildings in the picture i never see b4!!

I'm playing the game with the expansion pack. The reason why there's some buildings you don't know is probably that I've downloaded a lot of new buildings from www.simtropolis.com

how you take ur city picture?

In the menu to the left you see a "The ST Exchange", just click that. I think the best buildings can be found among the "BAT Files". Then you just click on the building you want to download.

Maybe you need to register at the site to be able to download the files but that shouldn't take long.

Yes it's very easy. Just do as I wrote, click on a building (and a page pop up with information). Then click "download" and when done you unzip the files in your plugin folder, Dokumenter\SimCity 4\Plugins (the one in documents/dokumenter, not the one in the game forlder). That's it...

Growable buildings appear randomly like all the normal buildings in the game. Plopable are buildings that can be placed at any time/location (like landmarks).

Time for an update. I just made my 3rd large tunnel in the main city Westside, since traffic is getting worse and worse all the time.
This new link includes both a Highway tunnel and a monorail tunnel. These tunnels actually do work if someone should doubt that. About a month after building it the new monorail tunnel has a average usage of about 12900:)

The population im Westside is ranging between 1.050.000 and 1.100.000 most of the time right now.

Here's the pics, first we have the southside of the tunnel:

I decided to give the people of Westside yet another tunnel. This time to ease up teh traffic in the downtown area on the most used Avenues running directly through downtown.

I made a highway tunnel under the avenue, starting and ending where the avenue connects to the other highway network.

Here's the western entrance to the tunnel:

And the eastern one:

First of all Welcome and thanx Salieri:)

I'm sorry but I don't have one secret tip that can get you tall building right away. Because of the size of my cities and my region they pop up everywhere I want them but it takes a little time to get to this point. You'll of course need to provide your sims with very good school, police, fire, hospital and traffic systems. They also love parks and trees.

Also, the more cities you have connected to the city your working on, the faster it grows. And of course you'll also need to zoom dense if you want tall buildings.

Here in my main city I also have a lot of landmarks and plobablt custon made buildings, you can find many of these on www simtropolis.com . Some of them have jobs and by placing some of those you'll also see your city grow.

That was the fast version, hope it helps you a bit.:)

Hi Simgineer and welcome to the forum:wave:

First the easy one: I got the Amsterdam Train Station from www.simtropolis.com yes:)

Let me try to tell step by step how I made the tunnels:

1: Raise the land where you want to make the tunnel. It can't be made under water so you'll have to raise the land above sea level on all of the tunnel route. (Be carefull not to destroy too much with those terraforming tools!)

2. When done, lower the land slightly where you want the 2 entrances and make sure there's a steep hill just next to it (in the direction where the tunnel is supposed to be).

3: Make the tunnel. You might have to terraform the land slightly a few times to be able to make the tunnel.

4: When the tunnel is done, lower the land again and make the water as it was before. Again, be very carefull when you do this. If you get to close to the tunnel entrances the tunnel will be destroyed. Don't go closer to the entrances than 15-20 tiles with the terraforming tool. When the water is close to normal again you'll probably still have a small mountain around the 2 entrances. Use streets to lower this. By placing one tile of street at the time you'll be able to make the land exactly where you want it. You can also use this "street trick" in the other steps, I use that a lot.

It's pretty hard to get it right the first time but after a few tunnels you get used to it and will soon be able to make then a lot faster. Hope it will work for you. :)

Now back to Westside, I used to have beaches on almost every coast but now I replaced those with these over most of the harbourfronts. Before it looked really messy and confusing a lot of places with dead end roads etc, now it looks a lot more organized.

I have an AMD Athlon 2800+ with 1024 DDR RAM and it runs okay but still a bit slow on the largest cities. I could also run large cities on my old AMD 800 with 392 SD RAM so you don't need that big a computer, but of course bigger is better in this case.

I have actually started to get rid of some of all the highrises in the "suburbs", so the population is falling a bit. I just don't think it looks right with highrises all over so now I'm trying to get it a bit more realistic. I'm also imlating more parks and green areas and more water.

When all of my map is build up and I've "cleaned up" some of my old highrise jungle cities I guess I'll end up with some 6-7 million in the region. It would be no problem to get it much higher but I just don't want to end up with a concrete'ish Sao Paulo like region:)

From www.simtropolis.com

You can download some waterfront packs that makes it possible to make these (just like you download new buildings). I can't remember what the one I used is called but there is more than one. It is also possible to make e.g. a industry waterfront, I haven't tried that yet though. It's a bit hard to get it right the first time you try to use it, but soon you'll be able to make it look nice:)

Here is your traffic map as promissed. I hope you meant for westside:) :

http://www.mikaellykmadsen.dk/sc4/86.jpg

The traffic seems to be fine, I've managed to get most of the heavy traffic out on the highways simply by removing other options (such as small road city connections close to highway city connections). I see that the 3 tunnels I have under the river (2 highway and one avenue) aren't included in this map, these also take quite a lot of traffic.

Westside city overview:

I found something very interesting on simtrolis today. I've always wanted to be able to make larger highways and now it seems possible. They call it "Multi-Highways" and you can find some threads about it on their forum. Basicly this makes it possible to make one way highways (splits up the 2 lanes). I've done some testing and I managed to make a 18 laned highway (9 in each direction). The biggest problem is the on-ramp these are more or less impossible to make with that mane lanes. It could be very usefull though if you need to transport A LOT of cars over a distance without needing any on ramps. Here's a few shots (this is not from Westside, but a test city):

http://www.mikaellykmadsen.dk/sc4/91.jpg

I agree that this is not perfect. Personally I would like to see more lanes in the highways and more options to connect them to other roads and each other. It would also be great if we could make more than 2 layers of highway on top of each other. :)

#1. How/where did you get those seawalls? They are so cool, did you make them yourself???
#2. When i download something from simcity.com, it works out fine, but when i try to download something from simtropolis.com, it doesn't work, because I don't know how to unzip the file. I have found out that I need Winzip, but where do I get it? Can I download it for free somewhere?
Also, i noticed two things: 1. your city has much freeways (or highways), are they really used? I ask this to everyone, because all my freeways are deserted. and 2. your city has a lot of airports, can you collectivize (is that a word?) them and have a huge airport instead?
One last question: Do all of your cities have a commerical zoned area? , because in my region, there is only one city with all teh jobs, and it seems to work fine for now
Anyway, keep on posting updates!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thank you:) Sorry for the late reply, but I've been away all the week. Let me try to answer your questions:

1: I got them from www.simtropolis.com like most of the other stuff I've downloaded. I can't find them there right now, but try to search for "waterfront", "water", "sea" or something like that and you'll probably find some.

2: Yes you need winzip to extract the files from Simtropolis, you can download it on www.winzip.com

3: Highways, yes they are used quite a lot. I make sure to get rid of all other road connections close to the highways, that forces the sims to use them. For many cities I actually only have highway connections to the neighboring cities.

4: Airports. I used to have "normal" airports in almost all of my cities but that kind of sucks. I've have now made 2 huge ones (as you can see on the latest updates) and started to get rid of the normal ones. I downloaded the airport pack called "RH Airport Pack" (search for it) from simtropolis, with that you can build them just like you want. They kind of work "regionally" (is that a word?), but you'll have to place a lot included in the pack in each of your cities. It is all explained in the help file you find with it.

5: Zones. Yes I do have a mix of Residential and Commercial in most of my cities, and then some cities with mostly industrial. In many of the "normal" areas of my densest cities I zone 6x6 and then zone it like a green/blue chess board:)
This works fine for me, but I'm sure other ways will do too.

I hope this answers most of your questions, otherwise don't hesitate to ask again

Hey. Hvordan får du vandkanten til at være lige?

I use the "udjævn" tool. First I make the ground level by placing one piece of road at a time (and then delete them), and then I place the seawalls. Some of them will look like they're placed on land, but with the "udjævn" tool you can make them look good. Place the tool in the water outside the seawall, and then drag it carefully against the seawall untill the ground is no longer visible.

The Olympics are comming to Westside! :carrot:

Westside has started contruction of the new "Olympic Island" area, right in the heart of the region, just a few minutes away from Westside Downtown. An old industrial area has been converted to a modern olympic city, and a new canal has been digged (maybe inspired by my Amsterdam visit last week:D ). The new island are not totally completed yet, since I'm waiting for someone to complete the Beijing 2008 olympic stadium. Some of the venues have been built though, one of them a new state of the art swimming arena (exact replica of the Beijing one) + the beaches has returned to the inner city. I god rid of them some time ago, but decided to bring one back now:)

Lets move on to the screenshots:

First we have an overview, you see the Olympic Island in the bottom:

A finally a night view, notice the spectacular lighting on the arena, and the huge palms with different colors:

Okay LoveCPH, let me try to make you a tutorial, I'll keep it in english so other people understadn it too (if anyone need it:) )

1:

First we have our rough, untouched coastline:

http://www.mikaellykmadsen.dk/sc4/tut/1.jpg

2:

I start by laying pieces of road to make it straight. Only one piece at the time,
and always on the tile next to the prvoius one (so they will be at the same elevation):

http://www.mikaellykmadsen.dk/sc4/tut/2.jpg

3:

Delete the road again, the land where it was is now totally at the same level.
Replace it with a line of road and whatever kind of seawall you use:

http://www.mikaellykmadsen.dk/sc4/tut/3.jpg

4:

Choose the "Udjævn Tærren" tool (sorry, don't know what it is in english), the one with the red ring around it, and start in the water. Be carefull when you level the water towards the coastline, you don't want to give it too much (resulting in demolishion of the seawall/road). You can also make the green ring small and larger, I think it's by pressing down shift and ctrl while leveling:

http://www.mikaellykmadsen.dk/sc4/tut/4.jpg

5:

Voila! You got yourself a straight coastline:-)

http://www.mikaellykmadsen.dk/sc4/tut/6.jpg

This is how it looks under the seawall, if you by accident destroy one of them during leveling (and this happens pretty often) be sure to lay down single pieces of road again to make the land level once again.

http://www.mikaellykmadsen.dk/sc4/tut/7.jpg

Hope that helps you:)

Well yes, but still not really slow. I don't think it ever takes me more than 3-4 secunds to zoom. The worst problem is actually in one of the medium cities, it is filled with tons of trees and that makes it slow. The game has also chrashed on me a few times, most of them when I'm working on this "tree" city. I think that is because of some other problem with my pc though.

I think more RAM would help you a lot if you want the game to run faster.
My pcu is a AMD Athlon 2800+ (2.07 GHZ) with 1024 DDR RAM.

cool. sprawled, but cool.

Yes it's getting more and more sprawled, that is also what I'm trying to make;) I used to have almost 7 million in the region, and highrises all over the place, but I found that too unrealistic. Now I'm going for the more realistic look, and getting rid of many highrises in the outer cities:) Not sure you can call a city with Sears, ESB, Chrysler, WTC, Petronas, John Hancock, CN Tower etc realistic though:D

Update time

Riverville/Westside is undergoing a huge redevelopment plan which will bring water close to all the sims in order to improve living standards.
Here's first some random shots from the smaller cities surrounding Westside:

Now we're getting really close to Westside itself, here we see some Luxury residential towers for some of the more lucky sims:
http://www.mikaellykmadsen.dk/sc4/114.jpg

Entering Westside, here we have 2 new office towers along one of the new canals:
http://www.mikaellykmadsen.dk/sc4/115.jpg

The brand new Westside Olympic Stadium:
http://www.mikaellykmadsen.dk/sc4/116.jpg

Night time, here we see a new bunch of towers of the southbank of the river.

The council for this neighborhood had for many years protected this hood from really tall office towers,
but now they felt it was time to move ahead like the rest of highrise happy region.
The place is now home to the 2nd skyline of Westside:
http://www.mikaellykmadsen.dk/sc4/117.jpg

Back on the northside, we see another brand new office tower (the one to the left):

Nightview of the tallest in the region:

Westside overview:

And finally the usual region overview, notice all the new canals (mainly in the middle area).

The mayor of Westside had known for a long time that most of the sims on Sim Earth didn't like his city. It was too succesful according to most "outsiders". Monday the 28th of October, 2004, hell broke lose. Without no warning the region of westside was hit hard with a nuclear bomb, it totally destroyed everything within a radius of more than 500 km.

To sum up:

WESTSIDE IS NO MORE

I only had a backup of the city on another partition on the same HD, and everything was lost:( I've been working on this city from the day SC4 was released (back in Jan 2003) but now it's all over. Oh man thats a kick in the junk hardcore. At least u can always enjoy the pictures of your great city. Make sure u get a back up of the pics too. On the brighter side, if/when u start a new city you can incorperate new ideas with old ideas you learned with the city of Westside. You did a lot of work to make the city more realistic (and I think the changes looked GREAT), so now u can start a new region with realism in mind, instead of killing off a few million ppl :) Good luck with your next project, whenever u get to it. Could make an interesting city journal too.

how do you build canals like that?

and how do you get to brick the waters edge?

First of all you need some seawalls. You can probably find some at www.simtropolis.com . Go to the previous page of this thread (page 8) and look at post #147. There I descripe how to make the coast straight. Now you just need to do the same on both side which can be really tricky in the beginning, but once you manage it you'll be able to make the canals pretty fast.

Most of my canals had 6 or 4 tiles of water between the seawalls, like this:

RSSWWWWWWSSR

or

RSSWWWWSSR

R = Road
S = Seawall
W = Water

Some are also wieder to make some variation, but you'll probably figure out yourself what you like the most.

Anyway, I think the canals brings a lot to the cities, they get a lot nicer. Good luck with the project;)

No, it's a few files you download and then place them in your "C:\Documents and Settings\Simcity4\plugins" folder (or omsething similar to that). I've downloaded 1000s of files from simtropolis and never seen a virus (nor heard of one from there) After you have placed the files there, the building/seawall/whatever will be availeble in the game. :)

I feel sorry for mlm, particularly since he lost a region that he put so much effort into to make look really good. I know I'd feel sorta sad as well if I lost my largest region which I have been working on for over a year now with 9.5 million sims.

Giorgos69, there's a file called config which you can reconfigure in some way so that you can make all the cities the sizes you want and what position. These articles shows you how to do so and what it does: http://www.sc4ever.com/knowledge/showarticle.cfm?id=1103&openItemID=cid.49%2Ccid.45%2Ccid.47
http://www.simtropolis.com/content.cfm?mode=omnibus&view=114

This specific config is the one I use for 12 x 12 large cities, though I wouldn't exactly recommend it unless you want to make an enormously populated region like me (still have barely used 1/3 of it) or you have some other reason. Absolute no-no for those with slow computers: http://www.imagestation.com/picture/sraid48/p9b8632e76fab605c64683614ec22844c/fcbecb1d.gif To save, go save target or picture as
