Hanjin launches two more Subic-made container ships (http://www.philstar.com/Article.aspx?ArticleId=423123&publicationSubCategoryId=66)
By Bebot Sison Jr. Updated December 12, 2008 12:00 AM

Korean shipbuilder Hanjin Heavy Industries and Construction Co.-Philippines (HHIC-Phil.) has launched its two new container ships at the Subic Bay Freeport.

The two Subic-made container carriers, which will be named Opal and Topaz, respectively, were concurrently launched from HHIC-Phil’s dry dock # 5 on Dec 4.

The concurrent launching of two container ships, Pyeong Jong Yu, Hanjin deputy managing director, said, “is the first event not only for HHIC-Phil. but for the Philippine shipbuilding history.”

“True to our word, we have finished building these two 4,300-TEU container carriers within six-and-a-half months without compromising required high quality, starting from their keel laying works done last May 15, 2008,” Pyeong said.

“This is due to the use of up-to-date technology, state-of-the-art equipment, weather-proof dock shelter that enables working during rainy season, hardworking attitudes of our employees, systematic training at Skill Development Center that is deemed the largest in the world, actual work-training in the shipyard thereafter, and the size of dry dock # 5, where four vessels can be simultaneously built together,” Pyeong added.

Pyeong also said that the company’s “real secret in the successful completion of the ships is the ever-increasing number of skilled Filipino workers employed at our shipyard.”

Pyeong also said that more than 15,000 workers are now employed at the Subic shipyard.

“Certainly, our company expects to achieve its goal of launching more than 15 container ships next year as the workers will surely become better familiarized with shipbuilding works due to continuous training and enhanced work experience,” Pyeong also said.

“This is revolutionary, not only for HHIC-Phil. but also for the Philippine industry. In the middle of the world-wide recession, it could be expected that this would greatly contribute to the Philippine economy,” Pyeong added.

this is good news. this kind of plant requires substantial power. as of this time, power supply for Mindanao is ok but additional requirements like this would need more investment for power generation. In the case of Hanjin, she will be sourcing her power needs from STEAG's excess from contracted load with NAPOCOR.

The proposed smelting plant will be inside Phividec near the SMC Complex (Sta. Ana) and according to my source, they will get their power from STEAG. They just inspected the site yesterday.

MINERGY, an independent power producer, is planning to expand. Hence, any future needs will somehow be addressed. But this additional power supply is still not sufficient to meet the forcasted power demand for Mindanao.

It's a good sign for the proposed MisOr Shipyard because Hanjin is still keen on increasing its production.

MINERGY

http://img257.imageshack.us/img257/6963/minergygc4.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

Mindanao Energy Systems, Inc. [MINERGY] is an Independent Power Producer [IPP] established in 1992 to address the crippling power supply crisis in Mindanao. It was granted accreditation by the Philippine Government as a private sector generating facility with a capacity of 50MW. MINERGY is the first IPP in the region to sell directly to a private distribution utility.

The power plant, located at Barangay Tablon in Cagayan de Oro City, consists of three 6.3 Megawatt Bunker C-fired engine-generator sets built at a cost of 21 Million US Dollars. Its engines are the well known and highly reliable Sulzer brand manufactured under license of New Sulzer Diesel Ltd. By Zgoda of Poland, while the alternators were supplied by the GEC Alsthom of France.

Consistent with the company’s goal to increase the renewable component of its power supply mix, MINERGY is currently developing the 8MW Cabulig Hydro Plant which is scheduled to be commissioned in the later part of 2010. MINERGY also plans to provide back-up power service both to the grid and directly to utilities and end-users.:cheers1:

Hurting Alaska, Gin Kings eye redemption (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/cagayan-de-oro/hurting-alaska-gin-kings-eye-redemption)
By Lynde Salgados

HUMILIATED by the 20-point blowout they suffered at the hands of Red Bull Barako, pacesetters Alaska Aces are poised to vent their ire on Brgy. Ginebra Kings Saturday night at the Xavier University gym.

Leading the KFC PBA Philippine Cup with a 10-5 win-loss ledger, the Aces and Coach Tim Cone take on the league's most popular team after the 5 pm preliminary showdown, showcasing basketball talents from the House of Congress.

"With our friends from the House of Congress coming in to play is a manifestation that Mindanao is not what some media people portrait it to be," said event presentor, Governor Oscar S. Moreno who billed the Alaska-Ginebra tussle as a match between the winningest and the most crowd-drawing team in the PBA.

Although the bulk of the crowd is expected to be on their side, the Ginebra Kings face a daunting task in stopping Alaska's redemption bid with reliable swingman Junthy Valenzuela a doubtful starter in Saturday's game.

Valenzuela faces severe sanctions for punching Air21's KG Canaleta and causing his outright ejection from their Friday outing at the Araneta Coliseum.

Valenzuela could well be suspended and fined after a meeting with commissioner Sonny Barrios in the PBA office early this week.

San Miguel's Dorian Pena, Red Bull's Carlo Sharma and Purefoods' Rico Villanueva have also been summoned by Barrios for separate infractions in their recent games.

Explosive guard Willie Miller could lead Alaska to victory against the Gin Kings who are mired at the bottom with a 7-7 record.

The top two teams after the eliminations will gain an outright entry to the semis.

CdeO tankers bag a gold (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/cagayan-de-oro/cdeo-tankers-bag-gold)

By Lynde Salgados

HOME grown swimmers provided Friday a gold for the City of Golden Friendship at the 3rd Philippine Olympic Festival (POF) national finals held at the newly-renovated Don Gregorio Pelaez Sports Center.

The foursome of Jose Alberto Martin Torres, Wayne Matthew Marte, Mark Lorene Gatinao and Vince Bobby Vera -- teamed up to clinch the gold in the 200-meter freestyle relay with an aggregate time of 2 minutes and 2.31 seconds.

http://www.sunstar.com.ph/files/images/12-13-2008_3.jpg

Cagayan de Oro also scooped up a couple of silvers in the distaff rivalry, courtesy of Lourdes College 2nd-year Nursing student Sarah Sayusay.

The 18-year-old Sayusay finished after Camarines Sur bet Katrine Manzano in the 400-meter individual medley for girls 17 and over category.

Sayusay also got the same result in the 100m freestyle after a thrilling race with eventual winner Janine Rochelle Siaron of Parañaque City.

Siaron prevailed by a narrow 1:08.26 to 1:11.34 time difference.

"We haven't lost hope for the elusive gold since Sarah is in 9 swim events. She's still in a fighting mood," Sayusay's mother and coach, Alice told Sun.Star Cagayan de Oro

But powerhouse Laguna tankers dominated the pool in the opening day with 11-year-old Ariana Herranz snaring four gold medals.

Team mate Banjo Borja, 15, bagged three golds to push Laguna, the Bicol and Southern Tagalog region to an early lead in this talent identification and sports development program of the Philippine Olympic Committee.

"The Laguna tankers put out a dominating show on the first day. But at least, our local prides shared the spotlight by winning the team relay event," Sayusay said of Laguna's dominance in the swimming events.

Herranz, who came short in the regional qualifier last September in Laguna where she ended up with six silver and three bronze medals, was untouchable Friday by dominating the 100-meter and 800m freestyle, 100m backstroke and 400m individual medley.

So overpowering was her performance that Herranz won by 31.69 seconds in the 800m freestyle, 25.01 in the 400m individual medley and 2.57 in the 100m backstroke.

The closest she came to losing was in the 100m freestyle where she bested Negros Oriental's Ana Daniela Paraiso by only a minute and 84 ticks after clocking 1:07.56.

Borja, who came to fore after posting impressive swims in the 2004 National Championships in Bacolod City, reigned supreme in the 100m backstroke and 400m individual medley before anchoring his team mates in the 200m freestyle relay.

The sterling pair of Herranz and Borja were enough to launch Laguna's bid for the overall title with seven golds and six bronze medals. Laguna finished third behind Big City bets Manila and Quezon City in last year's National Championships in Manila.

Glen Arellano of Zamboanga del Sur and Jennylyn Surailla of Tangub City delivered the first gold medals in centerpiece athletics in the 5,000 and 3,000 meter races.

Arellano took the gold in 16 minutes and 47.8 seconds besting Vincent Neri of Malaybalay, Bukidnon and Arthur Fronda of Laguna, who came in second and third places with times of 16:48.0 and 17:01.6.

Surailla, for her part, encountered little problem in winning hers as she clocked 11:16.5, way ahead of the 11:19.7 posted by Divina Kotongan of Baguio City and the 11:28.7 of Cindy Lopez of Camarines Sur for the silver and bronze medals.

In softball, Cagayan de Oro City edged Baguio, 10-9 and Tacurong defeated host Misamis Oriental, 10-3, to jumpstart their golden bids in the girl's division.

Rizal Technological University smashed Misamis Oriental, 13-1, in the boys' section to likewise enhance its bid.

General Santos City grabbed some of the spotlight at the pool by snaring four gold medals courtesy of Nikita Dacera (100m free for 17 years old), Lawin Dacera (400m IM for 13-14 years old), Omar Philip Dacera (1500m free for 11-12 years old), and the impressive win in the 200m freestyle relay by Omar Dacera, Fritz, Anos, Ian Cruz and Raphael Facturan.

Las Piñas also made its presence felt by drawing three golden swims including two from Fahad Al-Khaldi, who prevailed in the 100m backstroke and the 1,500m freestyle.

Jasmine Al-khaldi, a former multi-gold medalist in the Palarong Pambansa, accounted for Las Piñas' other gold by topping the 100m backstroke in 1:13.16.

Batangas' Christine Grace Tan and General Santos' Regiena Quesada came behind Al-Khaldi with 1:15.34 and 1:17.85 respectively.

MINERGY

http://img257.imageshack.us/img257/6963/minergygc4.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

Ug murag mas klaro sya, mas emphasized, then murag lahi ang design. The room is located right side as you take the escalator going to cinema 3 and 4. :)

This may sound superficial but I only based it on GearX post from toby's site. And none from Davao is indicated among its provincial branch. In fact, a brief history of Toby's is included there. Only Cagayan de Oro is present in the list along with its branches in SM Cebu, SM Iloilo, SM Pampanga, and SM Baguio. I didn't know that long time in Bethlehem, there was Toby's in Victoria Plaza too and SM City Davao. But the Toby's Official Site has not recognized 'em. After all, I only base what I know from what is written in official and valid sites. :) But thank you for letting me know and thank you for your valid and hypercritical question. :)

Yes ton, that's true. After LKK's major renovation and with the launch of its THE ATRIUM and Skypark, it has attracted more customers than SM. It has transformed not only as a mall but a lifestyle center. It is patterned like Greenbelt. Today, LKK has constructed LKK Gateway Mall, two financial towers (8th and 10th flrs), and another skywalk and by next year its 21 storey hotel. That's why SM is also doing its best to address the competition. SM has constructed a multi level car park with the ground floor as a convention center. It has added two more escalators and the management has promised to bring more high end shops. Though there has been no press release yet, there has been talks that it will build its SM Supermarket with in LKK property. Gaisano Mall has also started its expansion and has added branches here in CdeO.

Yup, CdeO has been growing faster nowadays & so with other key cities here in Mindanao but the prevailing image of Mindanao (bad image from conflicts) is still a factor why progress in other cities is slow....:ohno:

Upgrade of Davao, CdO ports finished early 2009 (http://www.tribune.net.ph/nation/20081213nat5.html)

12/13/2008

At least two seaports identified as priority projects of the Mindanao Super Region are expected to be completed by early 2009.

The two seaports are the Davao (Sasa) and the Cagayan de Oro Port Development Projects.

Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) general manager lawyer Oscar Sevilla said upgrading of the two ports was endorsed by the Mindanao Economic Development Council (Medco).

The Medco heads the Mindanao Super Region Inter-agency group, which is tasked to oversee the drive to make the area the country’s agri-business hub.

Medco chairman Virgilio Leyretana Sr. said, “these development interventions would significantly improve the water-transport industry in northern and southern Mindanao.”

The rehabilitation of the Davao (Sasa) port, which is targeted for completion in January 2009, is 95.5-percent complete and is 49 days ahead of schedule.

The P420-million project started in February 2007. It involves the rehabilitation of the quay and construction of a reinforced concrete wharf, mooring and fendering area, back-up area, as well as port lighting and drainage systems.

The Sasa wharf’s project development has six phases, namely site development, concrete paving, addition of reefer outlets, construction of weigh bridges, replacement of fendering and mooring and construction of wharf extension.

The upgrading plan becomes more urgent since the Sasa wharf has been designated as a regional transshipment port within the East Asian Growth Area (EAGA) sea transport network.

On the other hand, work on the Cagayan de Oro port involves the construction of back-up area for the newly-built 4,150 square-meter wharf which is now 96.5 percent complete.

The construction of the back-up area started in February 2007 and will be completed in February 2009.

The scope of work includes widening of the existing reinforced concrete wharf, construction of a back-up area, construction of a drainage system and installation of a port lighting system.

Sevilla said Cagayan de Oro port is one of the seven local ports catering to international-vessel who will fully meet global standards by 2010.

The seven ports include North Harbor, South Harbor, Batangas, Iloilo, Zamboanga, the Makar Wharf in General Santos and the Cagayan de Oro.

“The rehabilitation of the (Cagayan de Oro) port will surely spur economic growth in the countryside,” Sevilla said.

The port of Cagayan is just a wooden wharf catering to the bancas of pre-war businessmen and passengers when it was first constructed in 1908. Over the years, the port underwent many changes in terms of port administration and infrastructure.

The Port of Cagayan de Oro is located at the northeast of Mindanao within Macajalar Bay, near the mouth of Cagayan de Oro river. PNA

Outsourcing hub in every province in ‘09 (http://newsinfo.inquirer.net/breakingnews/infotech/view/20081208-176819/Outsourcing-hub-in-every-province-in-09)

MANILA, Philippines – The Commission on Information and Communications Technology (CICT) is targeting to have an outsourcing hub in every province in 2009, an official said.

This is in compliance with a recent directive from President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo to encourage more outsourcing companies to locate in every province throughout the country, CICT Commissioner Monchito Ibrahim said in an interview with INQUIRER.net.

“Within 2009, we will start making all provinces part of the next-wave cities program,” Ibrahim said, as he referred to an earlier effort to develop potential destinations for outsourcing companies in cities and provinces.

CICT plans to encourage local governments to take the lead in the development of these provincial outsourcing hubs. “Local stakeholders will drive this initiative,” the government executive stressed.

Ibrahim admitted that since there is now “high awareness” about government’s next-wave cities for outsourcing, many provinces and cities now want to be part of it.

The CICT, the Business Processing Association of the Philippines (BPAP) and the Department of Trade and Industry have developed a scorecard ranking, which is now used to rate potential next-wave cities in the country.

Based on the recent scorecard ranking, the top 10 destinations for outsourcing are Metro Laguna, Metro Cavite, Iloilo, Davao, Bacolod, Angeles/Clark/Mabalacat/Dau, Baliuag/Marilao/Meycauyan, Cagayan de Oro, Malolos/Calumpit and Lipa.

Meanwhile, Tony Del Carmen, president of the Laguna Industry Network For Knowledge, Innovation and Technology, said Metro Laguna has been rated high in the latest scorecard ranking of the outsourcing industry because of the “high-density of schools.”

“This has been Laguna’s edge,” Del Carmen said, adding that the province intends to boost industry and academic linkages to tap the top universities in the area to support the outsourcing industry.

“The key in the outsourcing industry is human resources,” he said, noting that Metro Laguna has bout 32 colleges and universities and 250 technology-vocational schools to date.

The next-wave cities scorecard ranking aims to provide objective gauge for potential investors and stakeholders in the outsourcing industry.

Pacific Wireless plans to install VSAT hub stations in Zamboanga, Cotabato, Cagayan De Oro, Davao, Butuan, Tacloban, Cebu, Iloilo, Camarines Sur, Cagayan, San Fernando La Union, and Nueva Ecija.

TeleTech plans increase in Philippine workforce (http://www.manilatimes.net/national/2008/dec/08/yehey/business/20081208bus14.html)

TELETECH said it is aiming to raise its Philippine workforce next year.

Kenneth Tuchman, chairman of the Denver-based call center said the company has 60,000 employees worldwide, with 21,000 in the Philippines. He said the company plans to raise it local workforce to 25,000, adding interviews for 1,200 applicants are held each day.

TeleTech would also expand its back office operations in the Philippines, where 5000 of its total workforce is presently deployed. This would scale up to 8,000 in 2009, Tuchman said.

The company has locator sites in Bonifacio Global City, Pasay City, Novaliches, Bacoor, Cainta, Dumaguete and Bacolod City.

Tuchman told reporters TeleTech would add by next year one more locator site to its already existing 12 in the Philippines. He declined to give further details.

He said the locator site would be put up in one of the cities the Commission on Information and Communications Technology had named early last month as among the Top 10 Next Wave Cities Outside Metro Manila and Cebu.

These cities are Metro Laguna, Metro Cavite, Iloilo, Davao, Bacolod, Angeles-Clark-Mabalacat, Baliuag-Marilao-Meycuayan, Cagayan de Oro, Malolos-Calumpit and Lipa.

In view of the global recession, Tuchman said Teletech would continue to grow but warned that revenues would slow amid the global crisis. He later on handed out P5,000 bonuses to each employee who took part in the Christmas dance number held during the party.

Meco seeking to gain access for RP fruits to Taiwan market (http://www.freshplaza.com/news_detail.asp?id=33413)

The Manila Economic and Cultural Office (Meco) is now seeking to gain access for Philippine fresh mangoes, bananas and papayas to the Taiwan market starting next year. Resident representative Antonio Basilio, Meco managing director, said Meco, with the help of the Department of Agriculture, is now negotiating with authorities of Taiwan to open up its market for the Philippine fruits. He said the affluent Taiwanese market presents a good opportunity for the Filipino exporters.

“We at Meco are pushing for the conclusion of our market access talks with Taiwan in 2009 with regard to our top agricultural products. Our tropical fruits, particularly our mangoes, are extremely juicy, luscious and of superior quality. Quality is key to Taiwan’s fruit and vegetable market, and we are confident that the Philippines’ agricultural produce will meet the exacting requirements of the Taiwanese consumer,” Basilio said.

He said Meco has high hopes that Taiwan will grant the market access, particularly since Taipei is already helping the Philippines in several agricultural initiatives like the Rapid Bio-Assay for Pesticide Residue. In early 2008, Taipei conducted several training sessions on bio-assay for pesticide residues in the Philippines that drew the participation of Pesticide Analytical Laboratories personnel. One of the sessions was conducted in Cagayan de Oro in March.

The Taiwan Agricultural Research Institute and the Laboratory Services Division of the Bureau of Plant Industry cosponsored the event. “In response [to our request], Taiwan invited Philippine experts to observe the whole system of bio-assay testing on chemical residues starting from the farm level to the market-place. In addition, visits to farm cooperatives for the grading and Certified Agricultural Standards/Good Agricultural Practices accreditation system for quality and safety of fruits and vegetables had also been arranged,” Basilio said.

Meco also pushed for the broadening of opportunities for cooperation in the field of livestock biotechnology and research capability. Basilio said the component of Meco’s proposed development cooperation included exchange of knowledge, skills, resources and technical know-how among experts that would strengthen human resources capabilities and research and development collaboration.

Alcantara battles Patrombon (http://www.manilastandardtoday.com/?page=sports5_nov28_2008)

TWO talented young boys destined to develop into stars of the Philippine Davis Cup team of the future, will meet in a mouth-watering match in the Phinma Juniors tournament at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Center.

Francis Casey “Niño” Alcantara, the 16-year-old prized find from Cagayan de Oro, plays 15-year-old Jeson Patrombon, who recently won the Singapore ITF Boys singles title, beating topseed Hirooka Ryuji of Japan in the finals in three sets.

After dropping the first set, 4-6, the Filipino stormed back to take the second, 6-3, and then raced through the third set in spectacular fashion, beating Ryuji, 6-0.

Earlier, in the finals in Sri Lanka, Patrombon lost to India’s young prodigy Sai Kartik Nakki Reddi. After a battle in the first set, which he lost on a tie break, Patrombon faded in the second, which Reddi won handily, 6-1.

A product of the Tennis Academy in Alabang, Muntinlupa, set up and strongly supported by Rep. Romy Jalosos, Patrombon, who has a 10-1 record in singles this season, moved up to a singles ranking of 693. Ronnie Nathanielsz

‘Coopetition’ favored by IT council (http://globalnation.inquirer.net/cebudailynews/enterprise/view/20081203-175860/Coopetition-favored-by-IT-council)

Cebu Daily News
First Posted 14:29:00 12/03/2008

CEBU CITY, Philippines – The Cebu Education Development Foundation for Information Technology (Cedf-IT) signed a declaration in Iligan City in November with nine ICT councils to strengthen the Philippines’ bid as a leading outsourcing destination.

Cedf-IT executive director Bonifacio Belen said 10 ICT councils signed the Iligan declaration creating the National ICT Conference of the Philippines, a venue where to exchange best practices in the industry.

“It is really not competition anymore but ‘coopetition’,” he said.

“The market requirement is so big that every one can have a share. It's one for all, all for one,” Belen told Cebu Daily News.

Coopetition, which is coined from the words cooperation and competition, means that competitors can benefit more when they work together.

Belen said the 10 ICT councils who signed the declaration are from Iligan, Bacolod, Metro Clark in Pampanga, Quezon City, Albay, Iloilo, Cebu, Cagayan De Oro, Davao and General Santos.

Belen said they hope to engage the other 18 ICT councils such as Baguio, Dagupan and Urdaneta which are currently being formed with the support of the Commission of Information and Communication Technology (CICT).

The CICT is headed by Ray Anthony Chua as chairman.

“The goal of the National ICT Conference is for all us to collaborate on how we can better improve the Philippines in being the destination for outsourcing operations...that we continue to take the lead in this aspect,” he said.

Belen also reiterated his contrary views to growing speculations that the business process outsourcing (BPO) industry in the country will suffer because of the protectionist mindset of US president-elect Barack Obama, who favors keeping US jobs.

“Many of these contracts were already laid down before (the economic crisis) and we are confident that the less hit industry in this crisis is ICT.”

“Medyo reactive lang siguro yung mga nagsasabi na ICT will suffer. Of course, there is no crystal ball that can predict what will happen in the future but at present, there are no indicators that will lead to such pullout (of companies from locating in Cebu or the country),” he added.

Belen said small and medium scale companies in the US will be the “moving factor” in the movement of BPO companies in locations such as the Philippines, where they can reduce costs.

He said smaller companies will find ways to maximize resources while reducing operation costs, especially labor.

Cebu will also continue to be an attractive destination for most BPO companies as the Business Process Association of the Philippines revealed that the demand is only 50 percent filled, said Belen.

“That being said, it means that we can still double our employment capacity. That is also a clear indication that jobs will still be available for the industry.” /Reporter Cris Evert B. Lato

Palawan as top ecotourism hub gets support from business magnate
December 5, 2008 6:44 pm by pna
PUERTO PRINCESA CITY, Dec. 5 - Palawan’s aspiration to be premier ecotourism destination in the country gets a much-needed support from a self-made millionaire, successful businessman and timber tycoon who has his own Lear jet.

Jose “Pepito” Chaves Alvarez, an older brother of Palawan first district Rep. Antonio Alvarez, in an interview by local radio stations (DWRM-Radyo ng Bayan Palawan and DYER (Environmental Radio), expressed his interest to help the province realized its vision to be a top ecotourism destination through the preservation of the province’s pristine environmental attributes.

Alvarez, who is involved in aviation industry with air charter services for both passenger and cargo, passionately believes that the province as well as Puerto Princesa City is the number one ecotourism attraction for domestic and foreign tourists, because of its natural environment which is very pristine.

He also owns the Columbian Group of Companies (CGC) which is the leading truck assembler in the country and is key player in the passenger car industry.

”Don Pepito,” as he is fondly called, is one of the great people who make Cagayan de Oro economically growing, industrially competitive, favorite investment and tourist haven and one of the fastest growing cities in the country.

He said he is not a Palaweno by birth, but his long association with Palawan has made him a Palaweno by choice.

Palawan leaders and residents in this island have been grateful to Alvarez for his support to the enactment of Republic Act No. 7611 or Strategic Environmental Plan (SEP) for Palawan, a law that calls for the total log ban in the province.

In the enactment of the said law, Alvarez relinquished his three Timber License Agreements (TLAs) with concession areas covering about 270,000 hectares of forests in northern and central Palawan.

Interestingly, even the forest areas adjoining the world renowned Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park or “Underground River” formed part of the TLA the acquired in 1983.

In the book entitled “Caring for the Last Frontier” authored by Vice Gov. David Ponce de Leon, it stated that “Jose Chaves Alvarez’s legacy to Palawan is not only in freely relinquishing his timber empire for the SEP’s enactment into a law. It is also his deep concern for Palawan’s forest." (PNA)

a litte bit of trivia, this guy created the first Cagayan de Oro thread here in SSC years back. the time when CDO and Davao are still in good terms. sad to say now, we are the IRAQ and IRAN of SSC. and nobody's winning, in fact we are all LOSERS whether we like it or not!

On my way to Manila, I met a German National. He seated beside me in the plane. His name is Knutt (I hope I spelled it right). He works in a shipyard in Busan, South Korea wherein he made the computer program to control fuel for ships though he travels from time to time where his services are needed. He said that their shipyard alone in Busan produces 80 ships in a year. And I asked him whether the economic recession has affected the production, he said that there are cancellation of orders already. Then I asked him what did he do in Cagayan de Oro. He said that he has invested in the city and has been eyeing for Hanjin's shipyard in Misamis Oriental which according to him will compliment Mindanao's Container Terminal considering that sea routes changes from time to time. And he finds the location strategic for vessels going to and from Malaysia, Singapore, China and Australia. He also knew about the upcoming international airport in Laguindingan. I had a great time talking with him. I learned a lot from him including certain details of Germany. As we arrived in centennial airport, he said goodbye and rushed to PAL's international terminal because he still has a connecting flight to Hongkong then to Dubai wherein his services is needed for another software program for shipping.

Sports & Leisure By John Montalvan

3rd POF National Championships in CdeO (http://themindanaocurrent.blogspot.com/2008/12/sports-leisure-by-john-montalvan.html)

About 3,000 athletes who excelled in the four qualifying games are seeing action in the 3rd Philippine Olympic Festival national championships at the newly rehabilitated Don Gregorio Pelaez Sports Center here in Cagayan de Oro.

The qualifiers Baguio, Laguna, Manila, Negros Oriental and General Santos—the champions in five qualifying games sent powerhouse contingents, composed of their finest athletes and experienced coaches and officials, to compete in the five-day sports competitions.

Host Misamis Oriental Governor Oscar S. Moreno said more than 40 local government units are participating, aside from the various colleges and universities and national sports associations that have sent their respective event-specific teams.

“It’s has been all systems go since last week and we are ready for the games,” said Governor Moreno who, for the past six months, has been overseeing the massive rehabilitation work at the 33-year old sports facility where the Palarong Pambansa in 1975, 1978 and 1988 were held.

Meanwhile POF records show that, among the qualifying games champions, Baguio City has the most impressive performance with its 143-113-76 gold-silver-bronze medal harvest during the Central Northern Luzon (CNL) qualifying games in March 5-11, this year.

It was a runway finish for Baguio when it relegated the contingents of Bulacan and Olongapo to second and third overall spots with 62 and 52 gold medals, respectively.

For the Mindanao qualifying games in Tubod, Lanao del Norte last May 21-25, General Santos City produced the most qualifiers to the 3rd POF national championships when it collected 110 gold medals, 10 more than second-placer Zamboanga City, while Cagayan de Oro City took the third overall ranking with 59 gold medals.

The National Capital Region qualifying games last June 25-29, the City of Manila proved it is still the premier city even in sports by collecting 123 gold medals while Pasig and Quezon cities had to contend with 60 and 57 gold medals.

For the Bicol Southern Tagalog (BST) area, Laguna took the championship title during the September 17-21 qualifying games by lording it over Batangas, Cavite and Rizal with 126-109-99 medal heap. Batangas took the second-place overall with 33 gold medals, Cavite with 23 golds while Rizal was at fourth with 22.

In the Visayas qualifying games last July 23 to 27, the two Negros provinces led the medal race with Negros Oriental getting the upperhand with 94 gold medals while Negros Occidental settled for second-place honors 71 gold medals. Iloilo was at third spot with 66 gold medals.

Host province Misamis Oriental, which organized the 2nd POF Mindanao Qualifying Games also at the Don Gregorio Pelaez Sports Center in August last year, produced 34 gold medals in this year’s Mindanao qualifying competition in Tubod, Lanao del Norte and landed fifth overall out of 25 LGUs that participated. Misamis Oriental, however, had more silver and bronze medals as compared to champion General Santos, third-placer Cagayan de Oro and fourth- placer Koronadal City.

“Ours is to send a message to the whole country—and to the whole world—that we, in Mindanao, continue to share the values of the Olympic movement—that of friendship, solidarity and fair play,” Moreno concluded. (MisOrPO)

Cagayan de Oro's Nite Cafe – Revisited (http://themindanaocurrent.blogspot.com/2008/12/cagayan-de-oros-nite-cafe-revisited.html)

Every start of the weekend at about 5 p.m. Friday, when the chaotic afternoon commute is just gathering storm, the main plaza of the city, Divisoria Plaza, metamorphoses from a shady, leisurely, and quiet haven of many different segments into a veritable beehive of intense economic activities and harried people, erroneously called a nite cafe. It has actually morphed into a full-blown frenetic bazaar likened to those of old, where any and all marketable merchandise are hawked and promoted.

From food services, to garments, to footwear, to costume jewelry, to dresses and men's wear, to all and almost anything that could possibly catch the fancies of the expectant shoppers as they hem and haw negotiating through the congested mazes of stalls and tent enclosures. And yes, loud live shows with blaring sound systems, too. And I suppose even contraband goods are marketed, such as pirated DVDs and a variety of smuggled items from footwear to garments.

For a taste of the strange and exotic, how about trying a hardboiled egg dipped in some kind of gooey batter and then deep fried. For eight pesos, it is served to you in a small paper plate laced with some kind of buttery substance.

All this with the solicitous blessings of the city government which has encouraged this strange practice dating back to the largely unlamented previous city administration. So, noisily commencing every Friday night, it lasts till early Sunday morning, except that all day Saturday the entire tent city is folded up and raised again late Saturday afternoon so vehicular and human traffic can continue unimpeded during the day.

Any stranger or any astute observer to the city cannot help but be amazed how this pained transformation is effected every weekend with precise clockwork. The plaza starts to ease up like a slowly emerging image of a recognizable bazaar before the clock strikes 5pm. Like a colony of ants, sweaty purveyors slowly materialize first with their assorted building structures of wood, steel, tent, plastic, and whatever else is available for such purposes. Then ushered in are the merchandise, again in differing sizes and volumes, carried around by differing modes of transportation.

By 5:30pm the entire plaza has taken on a completely different look and ambiance, with the noise levels rising dramatically, gaggles of people start congregating in large numbers, milling around mostly in places offering great bargains. Some streets are cordoned off and vehicular traffic diverted, in the usual chaotic and helter-skelter ways things are done here.

The surreal scene takes on the unmistakable air of organized chaos, amidst a chaffing sea of humanity and the jungle of motley assortment of merchandise.

Winding gingerly through them, one gets a sense of being in a dream-like trance.

The campaign, which hopes to reach out to more than one billion people in 1000 cities around the world, asks individuals, businesses and governments to switch off lights for just one hour on Saturday, 28 March at 8:30PM to create a platform of support for action on climate change.

Earth Hour aims to demonstrate unprecedented solidarity and provide a visual global mandate that will put the heat on world leaders meeting in Copenhagen in December 2009 to strike a new global deal on climate change.

The lights-out initiative, which began in Sydney in 2007 as a public awareness-raising campaign, has grown significantly over the past two years and now has 76 cities ready to flick the switch in 2009. Cities already committed include Moscow, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, London, Hong Kong, Sydney, Rome, Oslo, Cape Town, Warsaw, Lisbon, Singapore, Istanbul, Mexico City, Toronto, Dubai and Copenhagen.

At 8.30PM on Saturday, 28 March, the world will witness some of the most recognizable landmarks on the planet dim their lights in support of decisive action on climate change. Icons switching off include the Philippines' largest shopping mall – SM Mall of Asia, the world’s tallest hotel building in Dubai – the Burj Dubai and the tallest free-standing structure in the Americas – the CN Tower in Toronto.

WWF-International Director General Jim Leape says, “When leaders gather in Copenhagen in December 2009 to negotiate a new deal on climate they must feel that the eyes of the world are upon them. Earth Hour provides an opportunity for the public to send a powerful signal that they are watching and expect action.”

Says WWF-Philippines Climate Change and Energy Programme Head Yeb Saño, “We believe that Filipinos can unite when driven by the common good: Manny Pacquiao’s fights attest to this. The growing realization for the need to act on climate change, coupled with the success of Earth Hour Philippines last March provides us with a springboard to launch a bigger and better campaign next year. On 28 March 2009 we aim to enjoin 10 million Filipinos to join the fight against climate change by simply turning off their lights.”

Saño adds that Earth Hour couldn’t have come at a better time: December sees the passage of the Philippine Renewable Energy Act, a landmark legislation which took all of 19 years to pass. “The climate movement is in full-swing. Earth Hour is our best chance to meet the challenge with unity and purpose.”

David Miller, Mayor of Toronto and chair of the C40 Large Cities Climate Leadership Group says, “The C40 Climate Leadership Group is about cities working together to drive down greenhouse gas emissions and that is why as Chair of the C40 I support Earth Hour. It's crucial that cities and the public come together to take action against climate change and Earth Hour provides a great platform to do just that.”

Earth Hour Global Executive Director Andy Ridley adds that 2009 is the planet’s ‘destiny year’, with critical decisions needed to be made at the Copenhagen meeting on reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

“2009 is the year we decide the future of the earth. It is the year the world finally agrees on a plan to massively reduce carbon emissions across the globe. This is the time to invest in new ways of doing business in a new low-carbon economy. The sum of our actions today can change history and secure the future of our planet.”

The extensive WWF conservation network also has more than 30 teams working in countries such as India, Spain, Switzerland, France and the Philippines ready to support a local Earth Hour roll out.

About Earth Hour

Earth Hour is a global WWF climate change initiative. Individuals, businesses, governments and communities are invited to turn out their lights for one hour on Saturday 28 March 2009 at 8:30PM to show their support for action on climate change. The event began in Sydney in 2007, when two million people switched off their lights. In 2008, more than 50 million people around the globe switched off.

The Philippines was amongst the first to confirm participation for Earth Hour 2008. Last 29 March, from 8 to 9PM, the flagship cities of Pasay, Manila and Parañaque held a switch-off ceremony and enveloped the entire Roxas Boulevard seaside strip in symbolic darkness. Makati followed suit with its own set of celebrations.

Across the nation, from Baguio to Tawi-Tawi, lights-off activities were instigated in offices, restaurants, public parks, homes and malls in the Philippines’ largest display of solidarity against climate change.

WWF, Meralco and the Philippine Electricity Market Corporation estimates that more than a million Filipinos participated, saving 56MWh of energy and reducing greenhouse gas emissions by as much as 30-tonnes in Luzon alone – equivalent to shutting down an entire coal-fired powerplant for an hour.

In 2009, Earth Hour Philippines aims to reach out to at least 10 million Filipinos.

Avian influenza test facility opens in Zamboanga City (http://www.bworldonline.com/BW120508/content.php?src=3&id=072)

ZAMBOANGA CITY — A bird flu laboratory testing facility has been opened in the city.

Oscar O. Parawan, regional director the Department of Agriculture, said the Regional Avian Influenza Diagnostic Laboratory is the third in the country and second in Mindanao. Other similar facilities are in the cities of Cebu and Cagayan de Oro.

He said the P7-million laboratory was set up here since the city, along with key areas in the Zamboanga Peninsula, is a migratory bird path and transit point of smuggled birds from countries that have been affected by the virus.

The Philippines has maintained its bird flu-free status.

Located in Tumaga village, Mr. Parawan said the facility will boost Mindanao’s positioning as a supplier of halal poultry products within the Brunei-Indonesia- Malaysia-Philippines-East ASEAN Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA), Mr. Parawan said.

Halal is a Muslim manufacturing process, while BIMP-EAGA is an economic subgroup of the 10 members Association of Southeast Asian Nations.

Dr. Davinio P. Catbagan, director of the Bureau of Animal Industry, said the laboratory, a joint project with the Japanese government, "can detect accurately, precisely and quickly the presence of avian influenza in the country."

Mr. Parawan said there will be at least three experts who will man the laboratory.

Zamboanga Peninsula is among the top 20 priority areas being monitored by the National Avian Influenza Task Force, Department of Agriculture records show. The region was described as a "vulnerable spot" because of its proximity to Malaysia and Indonesia, which had confirmed bird flu cases.

The region’s Veterinary Quarantine Office has also beefed up its measures in checking poultry passing through every seaport and airport in the region.

The Philippines is part of the so called migratory fly way where thousands of shore birds, mostly from Australia, China, Siberia, and Mongolia, pass by. — Darwin T. Wee

On Friday and Saturday nights the streets are closed and many stalls are set up selling all kinds of food and drink, plus a wide range of other wares from shoes to jewelry. Night Café is open until 12 mn (before 2am). It’s a great place to just sit with a cold drink and observe the locals who throng there to meet and have fun.

Ports authority to reopen Tandoc port bid (http://www.businessmirror.com.ph/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=2702:ports-authority-to-reopen-tandoc-port-bid&catid=29:shipping&Itemid=66)

DEVELOPMENT of a port in Camarines Sur is again up for bidding as the company that won the contract to build withdrew from the task.

The Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) said the contract to build the proposed Tandoc Port Development project in the village of Tandoc, Siruma, BM Marketing which won the contract on April 7, has returned Camarines Sur.

“Winning bidder returned the notice of award. Hence, bidding is officially declared a failure,” the PPA said in a report.

The project involves the construction of a roll-on, roll-off (Roro) ramp, a pier platform, breasting dolphin and a rock causeway. The cost is estimated at P47.22 million, according to PPA documents. The bid envelops would be opened in the PPA’s Manila office later this month.

The Tandoc project belongs to the infrastructure development aspect of President Arroyo’s super regions master plan that pertains to the development of specific areas in the country.

Based on the plan, the Bicol region would form part of the Central Philippines area—designated as the country’s tourism center. Government officials have already started writing the formula for this aspect of the plan as part of the Central Philippines Investment Program.

Infrastructure up for construction in the region are the Bicol International Airport, the ports of Aroroy, Pantao, Esperanza, Boca Engano, as well as the Southrail project and access roads to Roro ports.

Tandoc would form a chain in a series of ports that link to the province of Catanduanes. Others in the series are the ports of San Vicente in Camarines Sur, Nato in Camarines Sur and Codon in Catanduanes.

So far eight super-region ports, called Sona ports, referring to President Arroyo’s State of the Nation Address, have been completed in the first nine months of the year. Eight more are up for completion toward the first half of 2009.

Other Sona ports up for completion that are “showing progress” include the ports of Cawayan, Claveria, San Pascual, Esperanza, Naval, Balbagon,Cagayan de Oro and Davao, the PPA said.

“Maripipi was substantially complete at 98.8 percent before it was damaged by Typhoon Frank in June. Restoration works has reached 12.02 percent. However, further damage was incurred due to Typhoon Marce which hit the area” in September, the PPA added.

City Mayor Awards University Chair at Theatre Festival
Posted: 12/09/08

Dr. Rafaelita P. Pelaez (left) and Mayor Constantino Jaraula (right) Dr. Rafaelita P. Pelaez, Chairman of the Board of Liceo de Cagayan University, was honored with a Lifetime Achievement for the Arts Award by the City of Cagayan de Oro during the recent Mindanao Theatre Festival.

The award, handed by the City Mayor, Hon. Constantino Jaraula during the festival’s Opening Ceremonies on Nov. 22 at Rodelsa Hall, was for her being a “Patroness of the Arts.”

Joining Dr. Pelaez in praise with Lifetime Achievement for the Arts Awards were Stage Director Anita Q. Santos and Playwright Ametta Suarez–Taguchi.

The Mindanao Theatre Festival entitled Mindulani sa Milenyo Dos started with a bang as the festival’s feature performers graced the stage of Rodelsa Hall with their fierce and soulful talents in dancing, singing, and acting, ultimately setting the standard rather high for featured productions.

Theatre groups hailing from different regions in Mindanao took part in this festive event. A total of nine productions were staged including Pasundayag’s “Todos Los Santos”, a documentary theatre piece scoping Filipino lives during the Marcos regime, Zamboanga City’s “Pacita y Salma”, a Chavacano drama about the quest for peace in Mindanao, Mandudulang Bukidnon’s “Dagulangan Ta Yugong”, a dance drama that tells of Bukidnon’s indigenous people, Sining Kabpapagariya’s “Dula Ta”, a theatre piece tackling issues of conflict in Mindanao, Sining Kandidilimudan’s “Si Sangab”, a masked play based on a Maguindanao folktale, Capitol University’s “Kinalkal ni Tarabusaw ang Puso’t Laman ni Ina”, a musical piece on current Mindanao realities, Bag-ong Surigaonon’s “Gamhanan: Ang Paglupad sa Isip”, a dance theatre piece about youth and drug addiction, Artists’ Quarter’s “Untitled”, an intimate adult drama set in a single bed, and Kathara’s “Subwan”, a musical piece based on a Bagobo myth regarding water conservation issues.

Festival Director and thespian Nestor T. Horfilla expressed, “We are very excited that this cultural event in Cagayan de Oro City, which brings together hundreds of active theatre practitioners who represent more than three generations of cultural workers, artists and advocates, can bring us to a more sharpened analysis of our practice.” The festival did indeed bring together not only passionate theatre practitioners but also ignited a fire of interest in theatre among newcomers to the art and several audience members.

The Mindanao Theatre Festival also mainly consisted of the Mindanao Theatre Congress which was held at Deluxe Hotel, Cagayan de Oro City. The Congress simultaneously functioned with the featured productions and ended on Nov. 25. The Congress aimed to get artists from all over Mindanao actively engaged in sustainable theatre work.

The Mindanao Theatre Festival in its entirety deemed a great success with piles of positive reviews and not only newly lit but rekindled passions for the phenomenal art that is theatre.

When I say busy, I really mean every sense of the word, and this is what I would describe LimKetKai mall this Sunday afternoon.

http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_m5Y1c6mrQdw/SUUMnhPLuMI/AAAAAAAAA8o/zxgS4uZzDoU/s1600/img_0378.jpg

There were SALE's and 10%-70% discounts, and a lot of BUY 1 Take 1 promos in different stores, and displays were all around the mall.

http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_m5Y1c6mrQdw/SUUM4omUsNI/AAAAAAAAA8w/C6ucVM8kpZI/s1600/img_0379.jpg

You can see a lot of gadgets, home theatres, clothes, bags, toys, and a whole lot of things enough to make the shoppers busy for the whole afternoon. Just the right place in time to look for the perfect gift this Christmas.

http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_m5Y1c6mrQdw/SUUUERQVRFI/AAAAAAAAA84/nABlSDe--ZA/s1600/img_0374.jpg

Now this is how a mall should bring the Christmas spirit to the shoppers.

So what are you waiting for? Buy Now!!!

Tinnex plans to construct tallest tower in Mindanao

MAYOR Constantino Jaraula has announced an ambitious plan to build a 30-storey “City Tower” at the back of the City Amphitheater by December next year.

The plan would make Cagayan de Oro the site of the tallest building in Mindanao.

If plans don’t miscarry, the “City Tower” would house the City Library, the City Tourism Office, the City Information Office, a mall and a condominium.

Jaraula announced this during a gathering attended by Rep. Rufus Rodriguez and other officials to light a giant Christmas Tree in Divisoria.

“Next year, that tree will be no more. It will now be transferred on top of the 30-storey City Center,” Jaraula said.

The giant Christmas Tree, donated by local energy provider Cagayan Electric Power and Light Company (Cepalco), stands 40 feet tall and features 850 Christmas lights.

The development came as Rodriguez announced a P30-million appropriation for the paving of the two streets around Divisoria –Tirso Neri and RN Abejuela streets.

These two streets, encompassing six blocks, will be corollary to another equally ambitious proposal, the “Golden Mile Boulevard,” which lead to the proposed footbridge over Cagayan de Oro River from Divisoria to Carmen.

In the middle of the footbridge would be a viewing deck cum coffee/souvenir shop.

With 12 months of self-imposed deadline, these much-hyped projects are yet to have their groundbreaking.

Another of Jaraula’s architectural projects would be the construction of a state-of-the-art dancing fountain at Gaston Park. It would feature a spectacular harmonization of water and lights to replace the old conventional fountain.

I admire his vision for the city though, I just hope na mapanindigan nya lahat yan at di lang pang PR (kay duol na baya ang election)

Pinoy choir wins top prize in int’l tilt (http://newsinfo.inquirer.net/inquirerheadlines/regions/view/20081214-177879/Pinoy-choir-wins-top-prize-in-intl-tilt)

CAGAYAN DE ORO, Philippines—A hip and energetic rendition of “Lady Marmalade” was what bowled over the judges of the International Choral Festival and Competition held recently in Busan, Korea.

Twenty girls and boys from Cagayan de Oro City’s Capitol University swayed while belting out high notes as the set of foreign judges, all authorities in music, and a largely Korean audience, clapped and rose in standing ovation.

The CU glee club won the gold prize as best in pop in this prestigious competition held yearly by the Korean Choral Institute. It bested 40 other choirs from 12 countries, including the famous choir from the University of Kentucky and the Manado choir from Indonesia.

Conductor Ritchie Asibal, a sleek young man of 30, won as best conductor, the first Filipino ever to get the title.

Two other Filipino entries, the University of the East choral group and the University of the Philippines chorale, won top prizes.

“We were diminutive compared to the other singers. One of the judges said, ‘Look at those Filipinos, they are small, thin and look like high school students, but their voices are so powerful,’” recounts Joseph Espadilla, the glee club’s tour manager.

“Among the other competitors, including the other Filipino choirs, we were the poorest. We had to beg for donations just to get to Korea. When we got there, we didn’t have enough money. It was all pressure at all fronts. So it was such a relief that we won,” Espadilla adds.

The group was awarded US$5,000 and a trophy, while Asibal received US$1,000.

Beyond stereotype

People who have heard and seen the choir describe their performance as beyond stereotype.

“I actually hate competitions. I never like the pressure. But with this performance, I just told the group to enjoy it, have fun,” Asibal says.

For the competition, the choral group sang three pieces—the upbeat “Lady Marmalade,” an ethnic song from the Cordillera titled “Kumala,” and the powerful “This is the Moment,” with Asibal doing the lead vocals.

In performing “Lady Marmalade,” the group had a rock-and-rhythm choreography, something that induced guffaws from the audience.

“This is the Moment” also impressed the judges because Asibal’s singing was not usually done by choir conductors.

Surprise victories

Espadilla says everyone was surprised to win because they knew that the other competitors had extensive experience in the field and had been all well-trained and well-funded.

“The others all had formal education in music, and even had doctorate degrees, major in voice, major in piano, etcetera. What we had are ordinary students taking up business administration, education … what chance did we have against them?” Espadilla says.

The best conductor award given to Asibal was also surprising because the Filipino defeated the Indonesian conductor who is a national artist in music and had won several individual titles in the past.

“We just made sure our performance will be fun, the audience and the judges might have felt that,” explains Asibal. “But the most important is that we always sing from the heart. That’s also the observation of one of the judges, that we sang from the heart, unlike other contestants who were more mechanical and technical.”

Patience, commitment

Local officials recognized the choir’s achievement and took pride in the fact that they defeated other more experienced and well-trained competitors.

Misamis Oriental Gov. Oscar Moreno, one of the choir’s benefactors, lauded the group for not giving up despite the difficulties in gathering enough funds.

Cagayan de Oro Mayor Constantino Jaraula also commended the group and promised to give more support for its future endeavors.

The National Commission on Culture and the Arts extended help, although belatedly, and has recognized the choir’s achievement by committing funding for its next engagements.

After winning, the choir immediately received invitations from other international festivals, including the Montana Music Festival to be held in summer next year in the United States.

“We almost gave up. We had very little time to prepare, barely six months. What made it worse was we also had to go out and sing to solicit money. We almost backed out,” recollects Asibal, hoping that their next competition will not be as stressful.

Asibal attributes their triumph to the patience and commitment of the whole group and the support of parents and the university officials.
