i am planning to take the boat to cagayan de oro. Is it easy to get a taxi from the pier to the hotel? Or I have to be wary of the expected abusive taxis that overprice you? Any suggestion?

its very easy these days to get a taxi when you arrive from the pier because there are plenty of them. basically, they will turn on the meter. in case they forget, just tell them. the one thing that taxi drivers in cdeo are afraid of is when a single passenger complains to a police or traffic administratiion office for unfair and abusive rates. in short, you will seldom see abusive taxi drivers here in cdeo.

No lay offs for CDO exporters (http://www.bworldonline.com/BW031609/breakingnews.php)
Updated as of 1:38PM, 03/16/2009

EXPORTERS IN CAGAYAN DE ORO in Mindanao will not lay off workers despite falling orders, results of a survey showed.

The survey, conducted by the Philippine Exporters Foundation Region 10 Chapter, Inc., compiled responses from 25 of their 100 member firms, the Philippine Exporters Confederation, Inc. (Philexport) said on its Web site on Monday.

Exporters of gifts and home decor, industrial goods such as construction materials and chemicals, and services were among the respondents.

"Exporters revealed plans to maintain their manpower to keep their businesses running despite the impact of the United States-spawned global crisis," the Philexport statement on the survey read.

This comes as respondents said volume sales have been declining, Philexport said without elaborating.

Wood exporters, for instance, plan to retain workers as "it is very hard to look for good skilled labor" while service exporters said their workforce, to begin with, is already lean.— Jessica Anne D. Hermosa

hay! salamat! its a relief that with most of the countries in the world in economic meltdown, there are still plenty of people who believe that retrenchment is not the answer

Oro riverbank rehab project launched (http://pia.gov.ph/?m=12&fi=p090314.htm&no=62)

Cagayan de Oro City (14 March) -- Some 300 bamboo seedlings were planted by concerned residents and officials during the launching of the Cagayan de Oro Riverbank Rehabilitation Project at Barangay Macasandig recently.

The project, which is an initiative of Rep. Rufus B. Rodriguez, Cagayan de Oro's 2nd district, will tap affected families of the January 2009 flash floods in Cagayan de Oro City from sitios Cala-Cala and Tibasak, Barangay Macasandig to rehabilitate the riverbank in the said barangay.

It is being implemented by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), Region 10.

Rodriguez said the members of the five organizations under the United Settlers Association (USA) will be contracted by the DENR to grow trees in their area.

He exhorted them to "protect the trees of life."

Aside from the riverbank, Rep. Rodriguez said planting of trees will be undertaken near residential areas sitios Cala-Cala and Tibasak, Macasanding.

Bamboo and mahogany will be planted by the beneficiaries of the project.

He further said that a 10 kilometer stretch which will be rehabilitated will have a total project cost of P100 thousand and each of the five organizations under USA will be given P20 thousand for their work.

Macasandig Barangay Chairman Aaron Neri, Sr. is thankful to Rep. Rodriguez for the project that will benefit his constituents. He also thanked the DENR for providing the planting materials.

For his part, DENR Regional Executive Director Ernesto Adobo, Jr. said there is a need for us now to seriously take care of our environment. He said massive planting will be undertaken during the planting season. "We have to act now and rehabilitate our natural resources", he added.

Adobo further said that Rep. Rodriguez is at the forefront in initiating environment projects in his district.

DENR Regional Technical Director Corazon Galinato said last year about P4 million was allotted by DENR for the implementation of the 4 environment thematic projects of Rep. Rodriguez. The projects include watershed and riverbank rehabilitation, mangrove rehabilitation and urban greening. For this year a total of P4.2 million is earmarked for the environment projects of Congressman Rodriguez consisting of watershed and riverbank rehabilitation, agroforestry development, and urban forestry.

The beneficiaries of the Cagayan de Oro River Rehabilitation Project are members of Macasandig Tibasak Landless Association (MATILAS), Tibasak Riverside Landless Association, Macasandig Riverlife Landless Association (MARILLA, Inc.), Macasandig Settlers Association, Inc. (MASA, Inc.) and Tibasak Landless People Association (TILANPA). (RPAO) [top]

Monk’s Hobbit (http://monkshobbit.wordpress.com/2009/03/16/fr-danny-huang-sj-on-the-death-of-fr-miguel-bernad-sj-1917-2009/)
Fr. Danny Huang, S.J. on the Death of Fr. Miguel Bernad, S.J. (1917-2009)

http://kagay-an.com/uploads/37214278Fr%20Miguel%20Bernad,%20SJ.jpg

I woke up this morning to the sad news of yet another senior Jesuit of legendary stature passing away. Fr. Miguel Bernad died today in Cagayan de Oro at the age of 91.

I had the privilege of living with Fr. Mike when I was regent in Xavier University, from 1983 to 85. I know he had his flaws, as we all do; but he was always kind to me, and always, very thoughtfully, sent me his annual Christmas card and new issues of Kinaadman, the journal he had founded at Xavier U.

In his honor, I share this speech I gave in December 2007, at Xavier University, on the occasion of the conferment on Fr. Bernad of an honorary doctorate.

I hope you will not mind if I speak somewhat personally. I am proud to say that I was a student of Fr. Bernad. Twenty five years ago, when I was a Jesuit junior, I asked for and was granted permission to enroll in a Shakespeare course Fr. Bernad was teaching at the Ateneo de Manila. This was the first time I got to know Fr. Bernad “up close and personal,” as they say. He was a marvelous teacher, leading us to depth of insight, and helping us appreciate the greatness of Shakespeare’s poetry by his own dramatic readings of excerpts from the plays. Dr. Edna Manlapaz used to ask me, “How was last night’s performance?” –referring to those famous dramatic readings of Fr. Bernad! I also came to realize that Fr. Bernad is a man of excellent judgment, because, at the end of the semester, he gave me an “A”!

From that time on, Fr. Bernad has continued to influence me. Let me just mention three points of influence. First, as a scholastic, I tried to read any book of Fr. Bernad that I came across, first of all because of the beauty of his writing. Whether reading The Lights of Broadway and other Essays, or Tradition and Discontinuity, I found myself in constant admiration of what I can best describe as Fr. Bernad’s “chaste prose”. This was writing that was deceptively simple, even spare, without a single superfluous word, but utterly clear and always elegant, graceful, persuasive.

Second, in 1988, during my first year as a priest and on my first assignment as assistant parish priest in Ipil, Zamboanga del Sur, I read Fr. Bernad’s slim volume entited Rizal and Spain. That book’s discussion of Rizal’s life and activities in Dapitan during his time of exile there helped “save my life” that first difficult year of priesthood. I was a Manila boy, and had never been assigned to as rural, as lonely and culturally unfamiliar a place as Ipil. Reading Fr. Bernad’s descriptions of how Rizal redeemed his time of exile in Dapitan with many and varied projects in the service of the people of Mindanao inspired and challenged me to overcome my self-absorption and to aspire to imitate the spirit, if not the achievement, of Rizal.

Finally, in 2001, when I was Rector of San Jose Seminary as the seminary was preparing to celebrate its 400th year of existence, I invited Fr. Bernad to give a lecture on the history of San Jose. His lecture was a model of impeccable historical research. But in the space of an hour or so, Fr. Bernad also captured the color and drama of 400 years. He opened our imaginations, expanded our vision, helped us glimpse past identity and future possibility. For many of us, Fr. Bernad’s lecture was the highlight of our quadricentennial celebration.

I have taxed your patience with my personal testimony of Fr. Bernad’s influence in my life as a way of making more concrete my sense of the fittingness of this historic honor being bestowed on him. When Fr. Samson first broached the idea at the Board meeting of the Ateneo de Davao, and when his initial idea was enthusiastically received and amplified by the Presidents of the Ateneo de Zamboanga and Xavier University, I also gave my full support. At that time, it seemed to me a most appropriate way of honoring an eminent Jesuit scholar.

Fr. Miguel A. Bernad, S. J. died on 15 March, around midday in Maria Reyna Hospital, Cagayan de Oro City. He started feeling unwell in late morning, and was brought to the hospital with low blood pressure. The heart was just too weak and he went home to the Lord at about 1:00 p.m. Fr. Bernad, 91, entered the Society 7 June 1932 and was ordained a priest 24 March 1946. Requiescat in pace.

Hanjin to return, says gov’t (http://www.bworldonline.com/BW031809/content.php?id=046)

TAGOLOAN, MISAMIS ORIENTAL — Cabinet members are confident that South Korea’s Hanjin Heavy Industries and Construction Co. would continue a $2-billion shipyard project here.

The Korean firm started site development last year but pulled out in April after a misunderstanding with local government officials.

Cabinet officials met here yesterday to discuss infrastructure and other projects in Mindanao under the "super regions" strategy of the Arroyo administration.

While Hanjin’s shipyard complex is not on the list of projects supporting Mindanao’s agribusiness efforts, it remains a major concern considering it was supposed to be the largest single private investment in Mindanao. The project was expected to generate about 40,000 jobs.

"Hanjin is investing here," Press Secretary Cerge M. Remonde told reporters.

The shipyard, supposed to be hosted by Tagoloan and Villanueva towns, is located inside the government-run Philippine Veterans Investment Development Corp. (Phividec) Industrial Estate.

Earlier, Misamis Oriental Governor Oscar S. Moreno said he was optimistic Hanjin would come back.

In an extended memorandum of understanding between Hanjin and the Phividec Industrial Authority that ended March 10, the Koreans were supposed to resume work soon.

Phividec administrator Nimfa Along-Albania earlier told BusinessWorld that Hanjin’s return could ease the pressure on local labor as some locators have slowed down operations at the industrial estate.

Mr. Moreno, meanwhile, said the delay in shipyard project won’t affect the development of the P5-billion Laguindingan international airport where Hanjin serves as lead contractor. — G.P. Alba

As expected. It's really awe-inspiring that more & more the foreign investors are investing in Northern Mindanao. Not to mention the upcoming hotels bear INTERNATIONAL Brand - imagine that the reputation of MINDANAO as a whole is really not good but why would these investors now are coming there? :)

Yes, all these ventures and investments (the korean Hanjin shipyard investment, the swiss-bell hotel, the chinese novotel and other investments, the korean 30 storey-condotel, south pacific resort and hotel, the Laguindingan Airport (of international standard), the upcoming Ayala Mall, high end and low cost subdivisions etc.) are strong positive economic signs/indicators for all investors to consider Northern Mindanao and Cagayan de Oro as prime investment site.

(Abbenal/PIA 12) [top]

— G.P. Alba

Roque says increased infrastructure spending to create jobs
Wednesday, March 18, 2009
By Annabelle L. Ricalde

LABOR Secretary Marianito Roque said the government intends to create jobs in the region by increasing spending on infrastructure projects.

This was made considering the expected rise in the unemployment level and the entry of fresh graduates to the labor force.

"Graduation na naman so madagdagan talaga ang unemployment rate sa bansa," Roque told reporters here yesterday.

Roque, together with President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo and her entire Cabinet, was at the Philippine Veterans Industrial Develoment Corp. (Phividec) in Tagoloan, Misamis Oriental yesterday to discuss the status and achievements of the Mindanao Agribusiness Super Region Projects.

Roque said job creation is among the thrusts of the national government this year to mitigate the effects of the global financial crisis, which has already affected a good number of Filipino workers both here and overseas.

Roque said the President has given instructions to fast-track the completion of ongoing infrastructure projects in Mindanao, specifically the construction of farm-to-market roads, irrigation projects, airport and port facilities, and the upgrading of hospitals in the region.

Also yesterday, Chief Presidential Legal Counsel and Mindanao Super Region development champion Jesus Dureza reported to the President and the Cabinet the status of the various projects in the region.

Dureza said 14 major projects worth P15.761 billion have already been completed while majority of the 27 ongoing projects are expected to be completed this year.

Among the completed projects are the 210-MW Mindanao Coal-fired Power Plant in Misamis Oriental, the 950-KV Photovoltaic Power Plant in Cagayan de Oro City, and port development projects in Cagayan de Oro City and Camiguin.

Dureza also reported that about P12.9 million worth of investments poured in Mindanao during the third quarter of 2008 creating some 9,298 job opportunities.

The President implemented the Super regions policy to enhance the competitive advantage of each region and stimulate economic growth through construction and rehabilitation of infrastructure projects.

Prior to the cabinet meeting, the President, accompanied by Governor Oscar Moreno and some government officials, went to Balingasag, Misamis Oriental to witness the harvesting of bangus at the Balingasag Mariculture Park.

ROAD TO CLOUD 9: Cagayan de Oro City
http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_aswO8m4zchc/RiuLheVCVCI/AAAAAAAAA-4/dM5u6IWJ4a0/s200/cloud+9+header.gif

The city. The road rage. The people. White Water Rafting. The Koreans. The jeepney ride. Marlboro. And everything in between.

This is my third day in this city and I feel like I’m inside a plastic bubble like that dude in the movie “Bubble Boy”. "Basta", it's hard to explain. I’ve been around the city on my own because my buddies preferred to stay in the hotel and play PS2 they brought along. This is what I have seen…

An update on my map first.

http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_aswO8m4zchc/RwjttmJhypI/AAAAAAAAFCQ/nh68WUzMwQU/s400/cdo_bisean.gif

http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_aswO8m4zchc/RiuI5eVCU9I/AAAAAAAAA-Q/_X1fd93rw8U/s200/21-04-07_2259.jpgThe City.Cagayan de Oro as what they cleverly promoted; is called “The City of Golden Friendship”. You’ll find this slogan all over the place and all over the net. It’s a relatively small city but it’s definitely larger and busier than Vientiane; Laos’ capital city. Cagayan de Oro is bustling! Lots of people, lots of shops and lots of traffic. Yes, road traffic! This apparently, is a premier city in Mindanao Island next only to Davao.

The Road Rage. I wanted to hire a car and drive myself around....but its not that easy. Mallberry Suites (the hotel we're stayin at 3,000 pesos a night - US$62/2,000 Baht/RM200 Tel. No. +63 88 854 7999) is conveniently located in a complex with Limketkai Mall, so its quite easy to go around on foot . Anyways, I wanted to drive BUT they do it here on the right side of the road! Left-Hand driving is still the rule in the Philippines -- a left over of American influence. And here’s the kicker – nobody wears seatbelts and some jeepney drives without any lights on at night!!! And add the big trucks tugging huge logs without any tail lights at all! What are they thinking? I’ve seen a LOT of improvised wooden crosses supported by rocks on the roadside. I asked a local what it is and she said that it means somebody died on the exact spot! Whaaaaaa????!!! Vehicular accidents and all? When are they gonna learn? Uncool.

The People. Is their friendship really golden? I should say “kinda”. The "Politician" offered us an escorted ride to Siargao when a local yuppie learned what we are up to; it turned out that he’s the Politician’s nephew or something. Why do we have to be escorted? We gracefully declined.

http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_aswO8m4zchc/RiuJTeVCU-I/AAAAAAAAA-Y/fxuuc8B4YNc/s200/xavier.jpgAnd why are there so many Koreans here? We met a lot of young Koreans studying in Ateneo de Cagayan (Xavier University) and their families are here too! I also met 2 Thai women who married Filipinos and they have a little shop called Little Bangkok down Velez St. It's a good feeling to meet fellow Thais abroad. Sweet. *me all smiles*

People here likes to stare. Well, just like anywhere in the region anyway so, no big deal about it. I kinda like to be stared at anyway and I'm loving it. Take that! So if you don't like people staring, that's your problem! LOL. People here speaks a language different from the Filipino that we know. They speak “Bisaya” as I was told by a very friendly beggar. Yes, a beggar and he speaks English! What d’you know? Well, I wanted to practice my Filipino with him but he spoke to me in English to my amazement! That’s awesome! I gave him money and a hamburger.

White Water Rafting. This is the main tourist “come on” of Cagayan de Oro City. To Morgan’s insistence, we HAVE TO try it out. Ok, fine! Get off me!

Early in the morning we booked a trip to this rafting adventure whatever. A local guide met us downtown, herded the six of us into a really huge jeepney with rubber boats piled neatly on top -- then off we go!

http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_aswO8m4zchc/RiuLNOVCVBI/AAAAAAAAA-w/tH78fdNxPHo/s320/jeep+rafting.jpgThe jeepney jockey must’ve sensed that it’s a first time for some of us; he tried to impress us with his driving skills which include a lot of honking to any car blocking his way! The trip was hilarious –and hair raising! Farah, with her huge Christian Dior sunglasses and all lost all her finesse trying to braze herself. Our hands were all blistered holding on tight to any metal attached to the vehicle! It was a ride of a lifetime – and it will never happen again. Period. There. Take that! No more jeepney for me!

We paid 900 Pesos for each (US$ 19/600 Baht/RM 60) to throw ourselves into rocky, ravaging water and try paddling ourselves to safety while pretending to enjoy it. That's the main point of it really. The guide gave us the prerequisite orientation, precautions, tips and some scary tales to add to the excitement. He was so convincing we decided NOT to do it at all. We all ended up sunbathing on the riverbank. LOL.

http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_aswO8m4zchc/RiuImOVCU8I/AAAAAAAAA-I/HfPgqC4S4m8/s200/22-04-07_0002.jpgCigarettes that kills. Now here…this is amazing. See this Marlboro? You know how much it cost here? – fucken 70 cents U.S.!!! (23 Baht/RM 2.30). Now that’s amazing with all the huge government warning and all. And did you know that you can also buy cigarettes here by the stick? That’s cool. Amazing, really amazing. We are all having the smoke of our lives except Tommy, who prefers to smoke Dunhill. *whatever*

And Michael (not his real name), the Fil-American model who came with us from Manila, as it turned out; is a famous face! Cagayan crowd calls out his name! And I hate him stealing most of the attention. He should go back to Manila soon!

The Night Bazaar in Divisoria attracts thousands of people every Friday and Saturday nights. Open air market, live bands, lots of people to meet! The market is mostly 2nd hand clothes and shoes, pirated CDs (I suppose from Malaysia), and lotsa food, food, food! It was a good chance to try local food, grilled and all, but we opted to try their local McDonalds instead!Woohoo!

****

I’m falling in love again with the Philippines. Eight years ago, I have to leave this country and I regret having left at all. But now I’m here again. And I’ll make most of my stay here on my way to paradise – Siargao Island.

ROAD TO CLOUD 9: Cagayan de Oro City

http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_aswO8m4zchc/RiuLheVCVCI/AAAAAAAAA-4/dM5u6IWJ4a0/s200/cloud+9+header.gif
The city. The road rage. The people. White Water Rafting. The Koreans. The jeepney ride. Marlboro. And everything in between.

This is my third day in this city and I feel like I’m inside a plastic bubble like that dude in the movie “Bubble Boy”. "Basta", it's hard to explain. I’ve been around the city on my own because my buddies preferred to stay in the hotel and play PS2 they brought along. This is what I have seen…

An update on my map first.
http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_aswO8m4zchc/RwjttmJhypI/AAAAAAAAFCQ/nh68WUzMwQU/s400/cdo_bisean.gif

http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_aswO8m4zchc/RiuI5eVCU9I/AAAAAAAAA-Q/_X1fd93rw8U/s200/21-04-07_2259.jpg The City.Cagayan de Oro as what they cleverly promoted; is called “The City of Golden Friendship”.

We gracefully declined. http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_aswO8m4zchc/RiuJTeVCU-I/AAAAAAAAA-Y/fxuuc8B4YNc/s200/xavier.jpg

And why are there so many Koreans here?

The jeepney jockey must’ve sensed that it’s a first time for some of us; he tried to impress us with his driving skills which include a lot of honking to any car blocking his way! The trip was hilarious –and hair raising! Farah, with her huge Christian Dior sunglasses and all lost all her finesse trying to braze herself. Our hands were all blistered holding on tight to any metal attached to the vehicle! It was a ride of a lifetime – and it will never happen again. Period. There. Take that! No more jeepney for me!

http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_aswO8m4zchc/RiuLNOVCVBI/AAAAAAAAA-w/tH78fdNxPHo/s320/jeep+rafting.jpg
LOL.

Cigarettes that kills. *whatever*

http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_aswO8m4zchc/RiuImOVCU8I/AAAAAAAAA-I/HfPgqC4S4m8/s200/22-04-07_0002.jpg

Jaraula: Throw all population control aid to Oro river/ March 18, 2009 (http://www.goldstardailynews.com/content.php?id=2026)

CITY hall has vowed to reject any form of aid from the national government or from any group to promote articificial birth control methods.

“I have ordered the city health officer that any donation of medicines or anything from the national government, World Health Organization or any other party that would constitute prejudice to the life of the compound (fetus) upon fertilization must be thrown to the Cagayan de Oro River. That is the position of the City of Cagayan de Oro,” Mayor Constantino Jaraula announced to underscore city hall’s stand against the use of any artificial method or means on family planning and population control.

He said he was being consistent with his position. “Back in the 11th Congress and through the 12th and 13th Congresses, I consistently and persistently fought against the so-called reproductive health bills,” Jaraula told delegates to the just-held 6th Araw ng Buntis national celebration here.

Jaraula, a lawyer by profession, argued that the Constitution mandates the equal protection of mothers and the unborn. He said any artificial birth control method or means would run against that provision in the Constitution.

“From the moment of the meeting and fertilization of the sperm and the egg, there must be life when it travels through and attaches itself to the ovary,” he said.

As he reiterated city hall’s policy against artificial birth control methods, Jaraula vowed not to receive any donation of medicines for population control programs from the national government. cio

Pioneer Oro BPO Gives Back: Helping IT Graduates find their place in the sun
Mike Banos March 14, 2009

The graduates of Class 2009 probably face the most daunting job market in decades when they step out of their classrooms and into the real world.

The Philippine National Census shows that of Mindanao´s 13.192-million labor population as of January 2008, some five percent is unemployed and a significant 23% underemployed. In layman´s terms, the latter figure or 3,027,564 people are working at jobs not related to the course they took in college.

The average annual number of graduates in Mindanao is 98,300 of which 18% or some 17,694 come from Northern Mindanao. The Commission on Higher Education (CHED) says approximately 5% or 850 of these graduate from IT related courses.
Despite the continuing tailspin of the world´s leading economies, the Philippine government remains upbeat the country will weather the global financial meltdown. One of the reasons oft cited is the Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) industry. Even with IT (information technology) related jobs being cut in the mainland United States, government remains optimistic prospects for BPO in the country remain bright because of inherent cost advantages and its close cultural affiliations with the US.

Unfortunately, such optimism has not been shared by students in many of Cagayan de Oro´s IT schools. Christine Redondo-Sevilla, administrator of the Capitol University (CU) College of Computer Studies cites how enrollment in IT-related courses continue to decline because of competition and peer pressure to move to other courses, especially nursing.

Luckily for IT students in Cagayan de Oro, there are new initiatives which seek to help them gain employment in their chosen field of expertise, among which is Syntactics Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) project dubbed LetIThelp.
"LetIThelp began with free lectures to colleges and universities in Northern Mindanao aimed at further educating graduating IT students to prepare them on the tough life outside the classroom," said Stephanie P. Caragos, LetIThelp President. "Its main goal is to help deserving IT graduates who have the passion and dedication to earn and learn at the same time."

STI (Systems Technology Institute) Cagayan de Oro City became the first beneficiary of LetIThelp´s first seminar "IT Students: Identify Where You Are Headed". Ms. Caragos briefed graduating IT students of STI on the possible IT professions which they could pursue after graduation. The students were also briefed on the necessary skills, requirements and qualities of an IT professional that the students must be equipped with to be able to have an edge on the stiff competition from other IT graduates.

Simon Healy, a mentor of LetITHelp, also shared his experiences in the IT industry to encourage IT Students to further develop their skills to increase their chances of employment when they graduate.

"The main reason for the seminar is to enlighten the students of the realities that await them after college," Ms. Caragos said. "By giving these free seminars and lectures before they graduate, they can prepare themselves better. With this, LetITHelp is happy to declare the first step of its mission a success!"

LetITHelp was born to answer the need for an organization that could help bridge the gap between IT companies needing skilled team members and fresh graduates needing additional skills to qualify for the IT companies´ requirements.

"Underemployment is one of the challenges for the IT graduates recognized by LetIThelp," Ms. Caragos said. "These graduates are forced to take jobs that are not in line with their education just so they can start working and help their families.

"Through LetITHelp, fresh IT graduates who show passion and dedication in their chosen field of profession will be trained and be equipped with necessary skills giving them the opportunity to land the job that they desire and to earn and learn at the same time´" she added. "After the training, these IT graduates will either be absorbed by Syntactics Inc. (the commercial company of LetITHelp) or be recommended to other IT companies in the IT industry."

LetIThelp.org strives to be a sustainable social enterprise by providing IT services such as web development, Search Engine Optimization and Blog Customization using Wordpress. Through the revenues generated by the enterprise, more trainees will gain the opportunity to participate in the training program.

LetIThelp is supported by the Youth Social Enterprise Initiative (YSEI) and Global Knowledge Partnership (GKP). LetITHelp hopes that this fruitful beginning will eventually lead to fulfilling the organization´s ultimate mission: to help and to give back to society the tangible and intangibles which helped Syntactics grow into what it is today.

Toyota CDO bags two awards from Toyota Motor Phils.

Toyota Cagayan de Oro City recently had a double celebration as it bagged two awards at the recent Toyota Annual Dealer Conference.

The dealership received its third Customer Satisfaction Cup of Excellence from Toyota Motor Philippines Corp. (TMPC).

"The much-coveted President's Customer Satisfaction Cup of Excellence is given to the top dealer who achieved the target scores in CS [customer service] performance as well as the overall target score of 90 percent in customer relations," Toyota said in a statement.

At the same time, Toyota Cagayan de Oro was tagged as one of the four Dealers of the year for the Japanese brand.

Other Dealers of the Year were Toyota Alabang, Inc., Toyota Balintawak, Inc., and Toyota San Fernando in Pampanga.

Awardees in the individual categories were: Christian Lawrence Dizon of Toyota Cabanatuan City, best Sales Marketing Professional; Eiza Lorraine Eizaguirre of Toyota Otis, Best Parts Marketing Professional; Edgar Platon of Toyota Shaw, Inc., Best Warranty Administrator; Albert Enciso II of Toyota Cubao, Best Body and Paint Service Advisor; Antonio Belonio of Toyota Davao City, Best Body Technician; Alexander Labarientos of Toyota Dagupan, Best Paint Technician.

Opposition sues city hall over Agora project/ March 20, 2009
LITO RULONA and MARK FRANCISCO - Correspondents
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

OPPOSITION councilors and a barangay chairperson yesterday pressed charges against Mayor Constantino Jaraula and his partymates in connection with the controversial P250-million Agora project.

The councilors––Roger Abaday, Teodulfo Lao and Zaldy Ocon––and Gusa ba-rangay chairperson Enrico Salcedo asked a regional court to nullify the contract between city hall and Mega Integrated Agro-Industrial Farm Corp. (Mega Farm).

The officials also asked the court to issue a restraining order against the implementation of the project.

Charged were Mayor Constantino Jaraula, Vice Mayor Vicente Emano, Mega Farm president Erwin Bryan See;

Councilors Ramon Tabor, Emmanuel Abejuela, Caesar Ian Acenas, Rey-naldo Advincula, Adrian Barba;

Marycor Calizo, Ale-xander Dacer, President Elipe, Alfonso Goking, Simeon Licayan;

Ian Mark Nacaya, Aa-ron Neri and Kreena Vi Poquita.

‘‘The project would violate rights(?),’’ said former mayor Manolo Tagarda Sr., a lawyer, who filed the case on behalf of Abaday, Lao, Ocon and Salcedo.

Tagarda said the project would establish a monopoly (?) of a ‘‘vegetable-landing area’’ and terminal in favor of Mega Farm.

‘‘What about the right of farmers to choose where to bring their produce and the right of others to establish terminals?’’(?) asked Tagarda rhetorically.

Tagarda also accused Mayor Jaraula of starting negotiations with Mega Farm without the city council’s green light(?). This accusations has repeatedly been denied by Jaraula who maintained that the previous city council gave the authority.

Tagarda said the recent ratification of the contract was like ‘‘putting the horse before the cart.’’

Tagarda also said the project was not given the go-ahead by the National Economic Development Authority (Neda)(?). BOT projects, he argued, need to pass the Neda.

Abaday said he hoped that the court would issue a temporary restraining order against the implementation of the Agora project.

“The right process was not followed(?),” Abaday said.

Abaday said the void from the start because city hall identified it as a “priority project.”

Proposals for ‘‘priority projects,’’ he explained, should be “solicited.” In the case of the Agora project, the proposal made by Mega Farm was “unsolicited.”

Councilor Lao has maintained that the project would be ‘‘very disadvantageous’’ on the part of city hall even as he expressed fears that the Agora would end up being bought back by the local government just like the Cogon and Carmen markets.

“Many provisions in the BOT Law were not followed. One was the signing of the contract prior to the city council’s approval,” said Lao.

The project, according to the councilors, also means granting Mega Farm exclusive rights to operate a terminal for vehicles bound to and coming from eastern areas.

‘‘What will happen to the terminal built by city hall in Gusa?’’ asked Councilor Ocon.

Ocon said the terminal was built on a property donated to city hall by businessman James Giam.

‘‘Giam’s contract with city hall states that if the city would no longer use the terminal (in Gusa), the businessman can take it back. But the problem is the Gusa terminal was mortgaged by city hall. How can Giam take back his property now?’’ asked Ocon.

Based on the above raised isssues against the Agora Project, It appears that the Opposition was just exploring for any possible arguments against the project in order to stop its implementation. My assessment is that those issues are NOT really SOLID GROUNDS for issuing a CDO (cease and desist Order) or a Restraining Order.

Councilors Ramon Tabor, Emmanuel Abejuela, Caesar Ian Acenas, Rey-naldo Advincula, Adrian Barba;

Marycor Calizo, Ale-xander Dacer, President Elipe, Alfonso Goking, Simeon Licayan;

Mao man gud na ang trabaho ng oposisyon, to perform check and balance. Hinaut nga matubag ug tarong ang mga yango-ngo sa mga taga-oposisyon ug unta dili pod lang magpasulabi ang mga oposisyon nga himoon nilang panggrandstanding lang ang isyu.

IMO lang ha? I don't think that's the official rendering of the structure. Most likely a concept or perspective of the City Gov't./Planner's artist - not necessarily the architect's. Let's wait for the official architect's version of it. Maayong hapon sa tanan taga CDO og NorMin.:)

it wasnt printed in any paper that the planned condotel will be 14 or 15 storeys but it was reiterated before that its going to be 31 storeys high. so, if you ask me, its going to be 31 storeys high unless a statement will be released that it will lower than 31.

thanks for the pictures, rfm.

Many foreign nationals would visit Cagayan de Oro once Hanjin is finished because of their "ship" orders. Tinnex plans to construct tallest tower in Mindanao

By Mark Francisco
Correspondent
from Gold Star Daily

MAYOR Constantino Jaraula has announced an ambitious plan to build a 30-storey “City Tower” at the back of the City Amphitheater by December next year.

The plan would make Cagayan de Oro the site of the tallest building in Mindanao.

If plans don’t miscarry, the “City Tower” would house the City Library, the City Tourism Office, the City Information Office, a mall and a condominium.

Jaraula announced this during a gathering attended by Rep. Rufus Rodriguez and other officials to light a giant Christmas Tree in Divisoria.

“Next year, that tree will be no more. It will now be transferred on top of the 30-storey City Center,” Jaraula said.

The giant Christmas Tree, donated by local energy provider Cagayan Electric Power and Light Company (Cepalco), stands 40 feet tall and features 850 Christmas lights.

The development came as Rodriguez announced a P30-million appropriation for the paving of the two streets around Divisoria –Tirso Neri and RN Abejuela streets.

These two streets, encompassing six blocks, will be corollary to another equally ambitious proposal, the “Golden Mile Boulevard,” which lead to the proposed footbridge over Cagayan de Oro River from Divisoria to Carmen.

In the middle of the footbridge would be a viewing deck cum coffee/souvenir shop.

With 12 months of self-imposed deadline, these much-hyped projects are yet to have their groundbreaking.

Another of Jaraula’s architectural projects would be the construction of a state-of-the-art dancing fountain at Gaston Park. It would feature a spectacular harmonization of water and lights to replace the old conventional fountain.

MisOr groomed as coffee capital/ March 19, 2009 (http://www.goldstardailynews.com/content.php?sectionid=3&id=2070)

Photo shows a coffee tree which is abundant in tropical countries like the Philippines. The province of Misamis Oriental wants to become the future coffee capital in the county.

Misamis Oriental officials are envisioning the province to be the coffee capital in this part of the country.

Benedict Lagbas, head of the Misamis Oriental Eastern Towns (Misoret) cluster, said he already met with officials from the Department of Agriculture (DA) Coffee Board to lobby for foreign aid for the project.

Lagbas, also a member of Sangguniang Panlalawigan (SP) in Misamis Oriental, said that they are eyeing about 1,000 hectares in six towns in the province to be planted for coffee that would also provide livelihood for residents along the town’s cluster.

Towns located within the Misoret cluster are Balingasag, Lagonglong, Kinoguitan, Sugbongcogon, Salay and Binuangan.

Lagbas said they are targeting indigenous peoples (IPs) to be the primary beneficiaries of the project.

“Walay problema sa (no problem) market, we have the biggest coffee processing plant in Southeast Asia,” he added, referring to Nestle Philippines, Inc.’s factory in Cagayan de Oro City.

Lagbas said based from his initial chitchats with the barangay chairmen in the six towns, the potential farmer-beneficiaries are all optimistic for the go-signal of the project.

Highway, road repairs to start next month (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/cagayan-de-oro/highway-road-repairs-start-next-month)
Saturday, March 21, 2009

By Annabelle L. Ricalde

CAGAYAN de Oro City 2nd District Representative Rufus Rodriguez said infrastructure projects worth at least P72.6 million will be implemented by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) beginning next month.

Among these projects are the rehabilitation, reconstruction and upgrading of the damaged national roads in Barangay Cugman, Sayre Highway in Barangay Puerto, and the national road of South and North Divisoria.:applause:

Three multi-purpose buildings will also be constructed in Barangays Bugo, Tablon and Gusa, according to Rodriguez.

"Within this year, the entire radius of Divisoria road will fully cemented," :applause:Rodriguez said.

The congressman said the initial breakdown of the P72.6 million funds will be as follows: P53 million for Highway Development and Management-4 (HDM-4) Butuan City-Cagayan de Oro-Iligan City; P16 million for concreting and additional two lanes of Sayre Highway in Barangay Puerto; P3 million for cementing national road-south Divisoria along R.N. Abejuela street; P600,000 for construction of the multi-purpose buildings in Barangays Gusa, Bugo and Tablon.

The funds, Rodriguez said, will be sourced from his congressional budget last year and from the national fund.

Rodriguez said there will be an additional P30 million from the national fund for the completion of the paving of the roads surrounding Divisoria. The DPWH is presently working on the portion of A. Velez Street in the Divisoria area.

Cagayan de Oro Acting District Engineer Tita Rayo said that by April, they will start implementing Rodriguez' projects following the ground breaking ceremony on Thursday. :okay:

Speed up Mindanao projects, Arroyo orders/ March 19, 2009 (http://www.goldstardailynews.com/content.php?id=2046)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

President Arroyo waves to well-wishers during her visit here the other day. photo by dante sudaria

TAGOLOAN, Misamis Oriental––President Arroyo on Tuesday ordered government agencies to fasttrack the completion of ongoing infrastructure projects in Mindanao to accelerate the area’s agricultural production and related economic activities.

Arroyo’s order came during the 17th full cabinet meeting on the development of Mindanao at the Phividec Estates Authority facility here.

Arroyo said she wanted the completion of ongoing farm-to-market roads, irrigation projects, airports, and hospital upgrading in Mindanao.

Presidential legal counsel and Mindanao Super Region focal person Jesus Dureza said seven of the 34 major infrastructure projects under the Mindanao Super Region have already been completed.

These projects include the 210-mw Mindanao Coal-fired Power Plant here, the 950-kv Photovoltaic Power Plant in Cagayan de Oro City, the Diosdado Macapagal Bridge in Butuan City, the Manay-Mati Road section of the Surigao-Davao Coastal Road, port development projects in Davao City and Cagayan de Oro City and the upgrading of provincial and district hospitals.

Completed under the hospitals upgrading program were the Dr. Jose P. Rizal Memorial Hospital in Dapitan City, the Zamboanga del Norte Provincial Hospital, the Zamboanga del Sur General Hospital, the Mindanao Central Sanitarium and Camp Navarro General Hospital in Zamboanga City, the Basilan General Hospital and the Compostela Valley District Hospital.

“By the end of the year, more roads, airports, irrigation projects, and farm-to-market roads are expected to be completed,” Dureza said.

These infrastructure projects, he said, would boost economic activities and enhance economic growth, improve access to social services, reduce transport costs and travel time, and generate employment and business opportunities.

Due to the infrastructure facilities already in place, Dureza said investments have doubled in the third quarter of 2008, registered at P12.90 million which generated 9,298 jobs.

Dureza said these developments would enable Mindanao to further increase its capacity to contribute to the country’s agricultural and fishery production, as well as hike or at least maintain Mindanao’s GDP share of 17.7 percent.

The 21 projects still on-going include roads and bridges, airports, power and energy facilities, agri-support structures and health projects. Funding for these projects must be assured to physically integrate Mindanao and optimize its potential as a strategic Agri-Fishery Export Zone in the South. pna

Laguindingan Airport Project pumps P1.7-billion into Normin region

By Mike Banos

The Laguindingan Airport Development Project (LADP) may be a decade late but it’s dead on target to pump prime the Northern Mindanao economy just as the effects of the global economic malaise start to be felt locally.

The bulk or 85.53% of the P1.7-billion pumped by the project into the regional economy was contributed by the civil works and buildings undertaken by the contractor Hanjin Heavy Industries and Construction Co., Ltd. (HHIC) in the last 14 months including site clearing and earthworks for the airside and landside areas, reinforced box concrete culvert for the airside area and foundation works at the passenger terminal building.

Engr. Della Capicenio, LADP project manager, fields questions from media during the regular Laguindingan airport project update hosted by the Office of Gov. Oscar Moreno Friday, March 20 (photo by Mike Banos)

“All the materials and manpower were sourced from the region, except for some specialty items we had to purchase outside the city or the country,” said Engr. Della P. Capicenio, LADP project manager during a media update hosted by the Office of Gov. Oscar Moreno Friday. “The contractors even bought their vehicles locally.”

The balance of the amount pumped into the economy by the project was accounted for by the airport access road and resettlement areas for residents displaced by the project.

The 4.4 kilometer, four lane PCCP access road is 85.53% completed for Phase 1 (embankment works, sub-grade preparation, sub-base layering, drainage and PCCP works) and 65.15% for Phase 2 (clearing and grubbing, earthworks, embankment and drainage works). Phase 1 is expected to be completed by April 18, 2009 and Phase 2 by June 4, 2009, Capicenio said. The contractor for the access road which is being overseen by the LADP project office is V. T. Lao Construction.

The P 40.6 million site development of the Phase 2 Resettlement Site which was implemented by the National Housing Authority (NHA) through its contractor V. T Lao Construction was completed as scheduled on Sept. 15, 2008 as was the construction of 109 units duplex type core housing units by contractor ESR Construction and Supplies, also completed on target at the same date.

Besides the local purchase of materials, Capicenio said the project now employs some 800 workers, most of who are from Laguindingan and the adjacent towns in Misamis Oriental.

Gov. Oscar Moreno fields questions about gambling in Misamis Oriental (photo by Mike Baños)

Gov. Oscar Moreno said President Arroyo ordered government agencies in Mindanao During the March 17 cabinet meeting held at the Phividec Industrial Estate to fast track their infrastructure projects as part of the administration’s pump priming activities to offset the effects of the world economic slowdown.

The National Economic and Development Authority recently revealed the government has earmarked P160 billion for small infrastructure projects in rural areas such as farm-to-market roads, irrigation and other fast-moving, community-based initiatives.

The amount is part of the national government’s P330-billion stimulus package aimed at sustaining the economy’s growth despite the worsening effects of the global financial malaise.

A second wave of pump priming through large scale public infrastructure construction has been set for 2010 using a P100 billion public-private infrastructure stimulus fund.

Nice that the Gov't is really speeding up the development of the major projects in Mindanao to make up for or lessen the impact of the global financial crisis. It's nice to know that a second wave of stimulus fund has been reserved for the coming year, a good strategy which I would consider a sort of "POKA-YOKE"...

Hanjin tops Arroyo agenda (http://www.goldstardailynews.com/content.php?id=1993)
March 17, 2009
SUSAN PALMES - Correspondent

THE mothballed Hanjin project at the Phividec Industrial Estate in Misamis Oriental would top President Arroyo’s agenda during her scheduled visit here today.

Misamis Oriental Gov. Oscar Moreno said the Korean firm has requested for an extension of a memorandum of agreement it has with the Phividec. The agreement ceases to be in effect this month.

Moreno said Arroyo would meet with her cabinet in Tagoloan, one of the two Misamis Oriental towns where Hanjin was supposed to build one of the biggest shipyards in Asia.

Moreno said the Hanjin project is a priority in the agenda of the Arroyo cabinet.

Moreno said Phividec was standing firm on the deadline because it has already invested on infrastructure development needed for the relocation of villagers affected by the project. The issue, he said, is whether or not Phividec should continue waiting for the Hanjin project.

The memorandum of agreement was already extended twice since Hanjin decided to suspend its operations in the province due to what it called as ‘‘local disturbances.’’

Despite the mothballed project, Phividec and the capitol prepared a relocation site for villagers at San Martin in Villanueva town, in hopes that Hanjin would return.

Philips offers to supply 5 million fluorescent lamps (http://www.manilastandardtoday.com/?page=business5_mar20_2009)

By Alena Mae S. Flores

The Philippine unit of Royal Philips Electronics of the Netherlands has offered to supply an initial five million compact fluorescent lamps to the government for its energy efficiency program.

Gerard Kleisterlee, Royal Philips chief executive, told reporters that the global consumer electronics company forwarded its bid to the Energy Department and was awaiting the results.

Philips Philippines is among the seven companies that submitted bids to the department. The five million lamps, or CFL, comprise the first batch of the 13 million CFLs that will replace incandescent bulbs in the Philippines.

The first batch of five million CFLs will be distributed by July to residential customers in Metro Manila and the cities of Cebu, Cagayan de Oro and Davao.

“We put in a good bid,” Kleisterlee said, adding that his company would take care of disposing lighting bulbs with mercury content.

“We need to have an efficient collection system and Philips takes that responsibility,” he said.

Royal Philips is a world leader in health care, lifestyle and lighting. Philips employs approximately 121,000 employees in more than 60 countries worldwide. The group reported sales of 26 billion euro in 2008.

“There is a big opportunity to conserve. We conduct audits of buildings on how they can be more energy efficient. We made a new lighting plan for them. The audit leads to insight [for companies to be more energy efficient],” Kleisterlee said.

The replacement of incandescent bulbs is part of the government’s Philippine Energy Efficiency Project that aims to provide direct economic benefits to the country by reducing energy demand and displacing imported fuel.

“Lighting accounts for more than 50 percent of the evening peak load in the rural Philippines... The use of proven technology in efficient lighting can reduce this demand by 40 to 80 percent,” Energy Secretary Angelo Reyes said.

The replacement of incandescent bulbs is expected to reduce peak demand by 450 megawatts, lower oil imports by $120 million each year, generate clean development mechanism revenues of about $10 million for 2010-2012 and create an energy- efficient market.

The Asian Development Bank is backing the energy project with a $31.1-million loan.

Highway, road repairs to start next month (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/cagayan-de-oro/highway-road-repairs-start-next-month)

By Annabelle L. Ricalde

CAGAYAN de Oro City 2nd District Representative Rufus Rodriguez said infrastructure projects worth at least P72.6 million will be implemented by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) beginning next month.

Among these projects are the rehabilitation, reconstruction and upgrading of the damaged national roads in Barangay Cugman, Sayre Highway in Barangay Puerto, and the national road of South and North Divisoria.

Panagbenga 2009 blog

Three multi-purpose buildings will also be constructed in Barangays Bugo, Tablon and Gusa, according to Rodriguez.

"Within this year, the entire radius of Divisoria road will fully cemented," Rodriguez said.

NEDA: Region 10 economy strong in 2008, but 2009 growth expected lower at 5% (http://www.pia.gov.ph/?m=12&fi=p090319.htm&no=54&r=R10&y=09&mo=03)

Cagayan de Oro City (19 March) -- Northern Mindanao is still the biggest regional economy in Southern Philippines the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) Region 10 reports.

It posted a 7.9% growth in 2007 surpassing the 6.9% growth in 2006.

This was propelled by 8.9 percent improvement in the industry sector, 8% in services, and 6.7% in agriculture.

Per capita GRDP in Region 10 is also highest in Mindanao and 3rd highest in the country.

Nevertheless, due to the global financial crisis, growth of the region's economy is expected to slowdown in the coming year, after its robust performance in the past two years. GRDP growth this year is expected to decelerate to between 4-5%, although still higher than the country's GDP estimate.

NEDA-10 OIC-Regional Director Leon M. Dacanay, Jr. reported the region's 2008 economic situation and outlook during the Philippine Economic Briefing held recently in Cagayan de Oro.

He further presented statistics showing increases in agricultural production, exports and revenue collection.

Inflation rates also continued to ease from 15.3% in July 2008 to 10% in January 2009. While employment rate managed only a slight improvement to 95% from 94.96% in 2007, underemployment recorded a noteworthy reduction from 34% to 21%.

A 10% slide in the inflow of investments, however, is noted. Export receipts, on the other hand, continued an upward trend, increasing 36% over the previous year.

Director Dacanay said that the Economic Resiliency Plan will not work if left to government alone.

He said that, private sector participation and support is very much needed, as always, for Region 10 to sustain its strong performance despite the current economic crisis.

The Philippine Economic Forum is a regular economic briefing conducted by the Investor Relations Office of the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas to update the business community, media and industry organizations on the country's economic performance.

lso present during the briefing were the Secretaries and Undersecretaries of NEDA, DBM, DOF, DTI, DA and DOE.

The forum was attended by almost 500 representatives of the various sectors in the region. (NEDA-10) [top]

Opposition vs STL snowballs (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/cagayan-de-oro/opposition-vs-stl-snowballs)

By Cong B. Corrales

OPPOSITION against the entry of Small Town Lottery (STL) in Cagayan de Oro continues to snowball, with Cagayan de Oro Archbishop Antonio Ledesma preparing the creation of a special social action desk against gambling in the city.

In a strongly worded statement, a civil society organization also called the City Council's endorsement of STL operations in Cagayan de Oro as a "product of small, corrupt minds."

Administration officials remain adamant, albeit short of washing their hands as they defend the entry of a government-sanctioned gambling operation that has angered many in the civil and religious sectors.

Vice Mayor Vicente said he sees nothing illegal with STL. The local government even stands to earn from its operations in the form of taxes, the vice mayor said in a press statement Friday.

Mayor Constantino Jaraula, in a radio interview, said the local government can't block applications for STL operations since it is under the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO) -- a charity and revenue-generating arm of the government.

"Helpless ang LGU (local government unit) kay (ang STL) is sanctioned by a government agency," Jaraula told a radio interview early this week.

Laughable

Gusa Barangay chairman Enrico Salcedo, who heads the Kalihukan para sa Kabag-ohan sa Katilingban (KKK), finds this argument "laughable" and "superficial." KKK is a civic group organized by local opposition figures.

"No reason could be more laughable and superficial than saying the LGU is helpless on STL," Salcedo said in the dialect. "Our local officials are only helpless when they say they are, but could be combative as ever towards STL when they want to -- like those in other LGUs."

Salcedo pointed out that in some LGUs like Iloilo and Aklan provinces, STL operations are banned because of the local officials' resistance.

"At the very least, they (local officials) could have set aside the endorsement sought by the operator. They didn't," the barangay official said.

Archbishop Ledesma said the special social action desk that the archdiocese is planning to create aims to "zero-in" on the gambling problem in Cagayan de Oro.

Social Cancer

"A social cancer like gambling is particularly dangerous as it corrupts not just the young but the succeeding generations as well," Archbishop Ledesma said.

He added: "First of all, we are concerned about the young people. Something like this concerns not just the educators but also the parents and local communities."

Monsignor Rey Monsanto, parish priest of the Nazareno parish, said STL operations are being opposed by the Catholic Church all over the country because of its "corrosive effects" to the "moral, familial and financial well being" of the people.

"Dili maayo gyud sa tao ang gambling in the long run. Hinay-hinay modunot kini sa atong katilingban," said Monsanto, former spokesman of the Cagayan de Oro Archdiocese.

No Opportunities

Gising Barangay Movement (GBM), a grassroots organization advocating for people's participation in government, said the City Council endorsement of STL operations was "the product of small, corrupt minds whose idea of providing economic opportunity is to pick the small change in the pockets of marginalized people."

The group said the poor are the sure losers in STL operations because "they are forced to gamble because there are no economic opportunities."

Early this week, the City Council endorsed the application of Barbarossa Gold Co. Inc. "to establish and operate the PCSO-Small Town Lottery Program in Cagayan de Oro."

Pro-administration Councilor Reynaldo Advincula said that in endorsing the application, the majority bloc was merely following a Supreme Court decision.

Councilor Advincula recalled that during the Magtajas administration, the City Council passed an ordinance banning the establishment of casinos in the city.

The High Court struck the ordinance as unconstitutional in the Jose Lina vs. Cagayan de Oro City case.

"Kun babagan nato ni, mabutang nga wala kita makakat-on sa SC decision ug gapataka lang ta'g pasa og mga ordinansa dini. Katong desisyon sa SC, dako kadto nga sagpa sa atong konseho," Advincula told his colleagues prior to the voting.
Moral Issue

Opposition Councilor Roger Abaday disagreed, saying that granting STL is legal, it doesn't mean its "moral."

"Although it is legal, is it then moral? Mi-oppose ang Pampanga niini. Remember that gambling is the source of all evils, kay kun wala nay kwarta pangsugal, mahimong mangawat, mahimong runner sa droga ug uban pa," said Abaday, citing opposition to STL in several provinces in the country.

Earlier, Jaro Archbishop Angel Lagdameo, president of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines (CBCP), called on the Arroyo administration to stop the operation of STL in the country.

"This is an urgent and ardent plea addressed to our government officials from the local to the national level as well as private individuals and corporate who share our concern," Archbishop Lagdameo said in CBCP's website.

According to CBCP, STL is a "legal cover-up for the illegal numbers game. This means gambling problems in the country would worsen as STL would operate side by side with illegal gambling where the worst hit would be the marginalized people-twice exploited."

"We appeal to elected officials to abide with their promise of serving the poor, work for human development and common welfare," CBCP appealed adding that "these could easily be complied with only if said officials would not allow the operations of STL in their areas."

Citing that STL is another cause of corruption, the bishops said the country has enough "of these antisocial factors."

The Church will never be in favor of any form of gambling in the City & therefore finds ways to stop the entry of any form of Gambling (CASINO for instance) because gambling is perceived to have "corrosive effects" to the "moral, familial and financial well being" of the people.

On the other hand, the local government welcomes STL & the entry of Casino in the City because the local government expects to earn from these operations in the form of charges or taxes.

My stance regarding the entry of CASINO:

For me, I am open to the idea of allowing CASINO operations in the city as long as the rules governing casino operations are properly set & strictly followed. One of the rules I think the local government must impose is to restrict participation of locals to CASINO operations. This way Casino operations will remain discreet thus eliminating the issues/concerns raised by the Church & the people (IMHO only)...:)

allowing casinos in cdeo will also create jobs. when people have jobs, that would also mean more taxes. youre right deevex. there's nothing wrong with casinos as long as rules are properly set and followed. lets look at cebu and manila for instance. casinos are not forbidden there and yet these two metros are progressing faster than theyre expected. lets take a larger picture. lets take vegas or new york for a more broader understanding. casinos are present there and yet casinos have not disrupted the people's way of life. it doesnt necessarily mean that if there are casinos, vain and despair follow.

RR bares projects for 2009 (http://themindanaocurrent.blogspot.com/2009/03/rr-bares-projects-for-2009.html)

2nd District Congressman Rufus Rodriguez announced his infrastructure projects for 2009 which has been included in the General Appropriations act of 2009 which is the budget of the national Government for the year.

A series of groundbreaking ceremonies were held during the day which culminated in a press conference at a local restaurant.

First in the list was the groundbreaking of ceremony of the rehabilitation and upgrading of the Sayre Highway from Puerto to Alae which will cost P160 Million.

This was followed by several barangay roads that included Bugo, Tablon, Lapasan and Gusa which totaled to P1 Million,

Another project is rehabilitation and upgrading of portions of the Butuan-Cagayan de Oro=Iligan Hoghway which is a national Road amounting to P53 Million.

In the heart of the city, Rodriguez had a groundbreaking ceremony for the cementing of R.N. Abejuela (South Divisoria) from Corrales to A. Velez Street. This will the be followed by the cementing of Tirso Neri and eventually the whole of Divisoria will already be cemented including the streets that cross it.

In all these groundbreaking ceremonies, time capsules were laid by the congressman together with city officials.

Presently the last portion of A. Velez street is being worked on (Cruz Taal to Divisoria) which, when completed, will finshed the project at A. Velez which will already be fully cemented from Fernandez Street to Licuan.

Also presently worked on is the widening and installation of drainage of J. Pacana Street from Licuan to Macabalan.

In addition to all these projects, Congressman Rodriguez also announced that he will use some of his PADF for the repairs and rehabilitation of streets in the city like Tomas Saco and other barangay roads.

He also announced that part of the GAA is the funding for the completion of the building of the J.R.Borja memorial Hospital (City Hospital) which has been left unfinished for several years now.

Indeed, Bulua is expanding thru its own. Same with Kauswagan, Macasandig, and Puerto.

If CdeO will sustain its superb economic prosperity despite of many challenges, CdeO's city proper will become more bigger. Safe to say, 10 years. But it will depend on the demand of progression: growth and development of the city.

The vast Paseo del Rio (already a commercial area) already belongs to the City Proper, even though no commercial establishments yet.

Every year, this will happen in CdeO. And CdeO is gradually, but actively becoming famous of this. ^^

If I'm not mistaken, there were about more than 300,000 devotees during the very first time Nazarene Procession in the city, I believe more devotees even from Visayas and other provinces and cities of Mindanao will come next year.

For Catholic faith, thus from Visayas and Mindanao are devotees. :)

For money, let's charge thus devotees at the same time as tourists. Bad cheetah! Hehehe

In the economic side, the Black Nazarene is somehow improving CdeO's tourism industry. :colgate:

Actually, Hanjin is just extending its contract. :)

I don't think the Korean firm will resume the project this year, while there's still this world financial tsunami.

In fact, stambay muna ang mga malalaking barko even in Hanjin Subic and kahit sa buong mundo.

If you'll buy a ship today, hmmm what an inexpensive price!

But when it comes to the 30/31 condotel, it's different. It's not Hanjin, but still Koresco. ^^

Songs of Davao City and Cagayan de Oro City bands in ‘The “Thank You” Girls’ film (http://www.mindanaoan.com/2009/03/15/songs-of-davao-city-and-cagayan-de-oro-city-bands-in-the-thank-you-girls-film/)

I’m really pleased to know that the songs at least three Mindanawon bands were included in the soundtrack of the independent Visayan film “The ‘Thank You’ Girls.”

The bands I’m referring to are Gasulina (a band I had the chance to hire for a gig roughly two years ago…I already fell madly in love with their songs “The Pill” and “Fueled” then — the very same songs that are included in the indie film), The Superflirts and fellow Atenistas, Lizardchips.

I still haven’t had the chance to view “The ‘Thank You’ Girls” movie (if I’m not mistaken, their last screening was at Robinson’s Indiesine in Manila last January 2009) but I’m really looking forward to getting my hands on a DVD (original copy, don’t worry! ) Hopefully, though, there will be more screenings of this movie because I”m sure a lot of fellow Mindanaoans would wanna watch!

According to the film’s synopsis, “The ‘Thank You’ Girls” is a Visayan film with a gay lingo twist. It’s a movie about gay beauty pageant veterans from Davao City who travel to Cagayan de Oro City in order to conquer the grandest competition of beauty, personality and brains in the whole province. These gay veterans accordingly believe that being city dwellers, gays in the province will never stand a chance against them.

Pretty interesting plot, I must say. I reckon there will be lots of funny as well as dramatic moments in the film.

To the Mindanao-based bands whose songs got included in the movie soundtrack - congratulations! Hopefully, more film producers get Mindanaoan bands and/or artists. That will really help spread the music of the south!

If DURIAN symbolizes Davao,

PINEAPPLE symbolizes Cagayan de Oro "and to the extent our food provider, Bukidnon." :)

hmmm, that's nice to know, kasi I never thought Pineapple symbolizes CdO...more like Bukidnon pa...

anyway, ang comment ko about the pineapple being out of place is more sa location...first, di kasi yan makikita from below, considering na 30+ floors ang bldg na yan...second, indi talaga bagay na nasa tuktok ang pinya ng isang high-rise...it almost becomes like a head of a giant. IMO lang...3rd, wouldn't it be better if they put a helipad instead?

it would be better if they place the pineapple in front of the entrance ng building, parang rotonda nga, like the globe sa MOA. it would be nicer.

Well, devotee is one of a kind of a tourist. Many devotees could add the number of tourists arrival in the city... hehe

This way Casino operations will remain discreet thus eliminating the issues/concerns raised by the Church & the people (IMHO only)...:)

bago papasukin ang mga casino sa CdeO dapat pag aralan ang "positive & negative" sides para walang sisihan pag dating ng ilang taon!

allowing casinos in cdeo will also create jobs. when people have jobs, that would also mean more taxes. youre right deevex. there's nothing wrong with casinos as long as rules are properly set and followed. lets look at cebu and manila for instance. casinos are not forbidden there and yet these two metros are progressing faster than theyre expected. lets take a larger picture. lets take vegas or new york for a more broader understanding. casinos are present there and yet casinos have not disrupted the people's way of life. it doesnt necessarily mean that if there are casinos, vain and despair follow.

Sana marinig ng mga kontra Casino ang inyong mga opinyon. Points taken.

Re: STL, pangit naman ang mga comments ng mga tao sa STL ng Luzon. Better wag nalang yan i-implement dito.

:okay:

Landmarks are starting from left: XU High Scool, Xavier Estate Sports and Country Club, Koresco Hotel and Condo and rest of Pueblo de Oro, the under construction CDO Convention center, Nanuri International School and in the rightmost is the Gran Europa and Alvarez Mansion.

The 2nd pic, Koresco Hotel and Condo, closer look of Gran Europa, and the Lumbia Airport. Tama ba ang namings ko?
