DOT notes 62.04% hotel occupancy rate in Northern Mindanao (http://www.pia.gov.ph/default.asp?m=12&fi=p090511.htm&no=36)
by Rutchie Cabahug-Aguhob

Cagayan de Oro City (11 May) -- An average 62.04% occupancy rate in hotels and lodging houses have been noted in Northern Mindanao, last year, posting a 9.11% improvement over that of 2007.

The highest occupancy rate of 88.02% was noted in Cagayan de Oro and Gingoog Cities, Misamis Oriental followed by Ozamiz, Tangub & Oroquieta Cities in Misamis Occidental, 70%, Iligan City and Tubod, Lanao del Norte, 58.02%, Camiguin, 50% and Malaybalay and Valencia Cities, Bukidnon, 34.16%.

As gateway of the region, Cagayan de Oro hosted most of the conventions and seminars, hence their high hotel occupancy rate, Regional Director Catalino E. Chan III of the Department of Tourism (DOT), Region 10, said.

"With this data, the private sector suppliers of hotels, restaurants, transport, etc. are now challenged to pool their resources together and make innovations with attractive packages to draw the spending capabilities of the market," Chan also said.

Meanwhile, he said the continued support of the local government units, private sector and the regional line agencies will greatly help in further promoting the tourist destinations of the region.

Last year, a total of 1,041,382 tourists visited the region of which 994,897 were Filipino domestic tourists, 3,732 were Balikbayans while the rest were foreigners.

Chan said the most number of 6,590 foreign tourists came from USA, followed by the Koreans, 4,523, Japan, 4,101, China, 4,008, Germany, 2,033, Australia, 1,876, United Kingdom, 1,237, Hongkong, 1,158, Taiwan, 1,086, and Netherlands, 1,025. (PIA 10)

Oro mayor lauds civic group for donating books (http://www.pia.gov.ph/?m=12&fi=p090511.htm&no=38)
Cagayan de Oro City (11 May) -- City Mayor Constantino G. Jaraula today thanked the Rotary Uptown Club of Cagayan de Oro for donating some 17,732 new books which will benefit schoolchildren and students from 31 public elementary and secondary schools in the city.

Mayor Jaraula, assisted by City Administrator Griscelda Joson, expressed the City Government's gratitude when the Rotary Uptown Club of Cagayan de Oro officials, led by its President Rudy Meñes, held a ceremonial book turnover during Monday's flagraising ceremony at City Hall.

Mayor Jaraula said the book donation will go a long way for the improvement of the schoolchildren and high school students' basic reading and learning skills.

The book donation is part of the club's continuing commitment to uplift and improve the educational facilities and programs of public elementary and high schools in the city.

Schoolchildren from 23 public elementary schools are expected to benefit from the group's book assistance program.

These are the elementary schools of Balulang, KM 5, Macanhan, Sacred Valley Village, Upper Carmen, West City Central, Baikingon, Bulao, Calaanan, Canitoan, G.L. Reyes-Anhawon, Pagatpat, Pamalihi, San Simon, Baluarte, Bayanga, Dansolihon, Mambuaya, Man-ai, Tumpagon, Tagpangi, Pigsag-an and Lumbia.

While the eight recipient public secondary high schools are Iponan, Calaanan, Canitoan, Lumbia, Carmen, Bayanga, Mambuaya and Tignapoloan.

It can be recalled that Mayor Jaraula also lauded the group after they built last year a two-classroom schoolbuilding at the Calaanan Elementary School.

Meanwhile, Mayor Jaraula welcomed a 5-man Rotary International Inbound Group Study Exchange team who are in Cagayan de Oro City for a month-long cultural and vocational visit.

The group of the Rotary International District 5110 from Oregon, USA is headed by its team leader Dell G. Gray, with program manager Sarah B. Chapman, government criminal prosecutor Brigid K. Turner, college instructor Jennifer L. Jackson and university spanish instructor Marc R. Zollinger as members.

On same occasion, Mayor Jaraula also turned over 10 sets of bullet-proof vests which will be used by the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team of the Cagayan de Oro City Police Office (COCPO). (City Information Office) [top]

Laguindingan Airport ahead of sched

The construction of the Laguindingan airport is 12% ahead of schedule as of today. This was the assessment made by Engr. Della Capicenio, Project Director and confirmed by the Korean consultant of Hanjin, the company building the project.

In a special tour of the premises for members of media, the officials showed the start of construction of the terminal building and the present leveling of the runway.

The runway will be 45 meters by 2,100 meters or 2.1 kilometers plus 300 meters safety area on both ends. This is good for an Airbus A320 and 319 presently used by local domestic airlines for domestic and regional flights.

Concreting of the runway is scheduled in Spetember but at the rate the project is goiung ahead of schedule this may be done earlier.

Originally the airport is scheduled for completion and operations by the 1st quarter of 2012. At the rate the project is going this may be fished by either the 4th Q of 2011 or even by the 3rd Q.
However, the runway may already be used by March of 2010 and this will first be used for take off and landing by President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo to inaugurate its use.

“The communications equipment will not be in place yetbut the planes can already use it using visual aids,” Capicenio explained.

This was confirmed by Gov. oscar Moreno who said that PGMA deserves the honor of using the runway first because she has always pushed the project even when she was still an undersecretary of the Department of Trade and Industry.

A 6 lane access road from the main highway is presently being concreted which will lead directly to the terminal building.

Meanwhile, the relocation of families affected by the project is on going with the construction of houses for the beneficiaries. Several houses are already occupied by the families and several more are still being worked on.

Northern Mindanao’s main city, Cagayan de Oro, will once again play host to one of the legs of the SMART Buddy Hot Summer Samahan this year. Dubbed the “Barkada Roadtrip,” which is now on its 4th year, the SMART Buddy Hot Summer Samahan CDO activity will be held on Saturday, May 16, 2009.

Various activities as well as a concert featuring local CDO talents, PBB celebrity Jon Avila and bands Kamikazee and Hale will take place.

Here’s good news to all of you who want to take part of this event in the heart of Mindanao — access to the event is FREE – Smart Buddy subscribers just need to load at least P60, while others need to buy a Smart Buddy SIM then load at least P30, to be able to join the daytime games, the raffle, and the concert.

Meanwhile, Smart Buddy subscribers may take advantage of special call and text packages designed especially to make the Hot Summer Samahan experience better. With Call Night Long, enjoy unlimited SMART-to-SMART or SMART-to-Talk ‘N Text calling from 11pm to 6am for only P15. Register for Call Night Long just by sending NYT15 to 8566. To make calls, subscriber dials *8566 plus the 11-digit mobile number being called, e.g., *856609191234567.

Subscribers may also load All Text MMS 20 for 110 SMART-to-SMART or SMART-to-Talk ‘N Text texts or MMS, plus 10 texts to all networks, valid for 1 day.

All Text MMS 30 gives 180 SMART-to-SMART or SMART-to-Talk ‘N Text texts or MMS plus 10 texts to all networks, valid for 2 days. Avail of these MMS packages from over a million load retailers all over the country, or text ATM20 to 2827.

The Hot Summer Samahan series this year kicked off in White Beach, Puerto Galera.

This year’s “Barkada Trip” was given a pretty interesting twist. Lucky barkadas from all over the country were treated to trips aboard a high style, fully furnished mobile lounge as well as front-seat access to the SMART concerts. At each of the stops in the series (Laoag City, Bulacan, and Boracay), a lucky group of Smart Buddy subscribers cum barkada was chosen to join the “Barkada Roadtrip”. Each winning group enjoyed the one-of-a-kind experience aboard the mobile lounge, plus an all-expenses-paid special tour at the next Hot Summer Samahan destination.

Pretty cool treat, eh? And it’s even cooler because you get to experience the whole thing with friends

So will I see YOU at the SMART Buddy Hot Summer Samahan Cagayan de Oro leg?

Sun Cellular’s network expansion evident in Visayas, Mindanao (http://www.tribune.net.ph/etc/20090510etc4.html)

05/10/2009

Sun Cellular’s unbeatable products and services have indeed changed the landscape of mobile telecommunications in the country. And with its constantly improving infrastructure that brings forth a clearer and stronger nationwide coverage, the number of Sun Cellular subscribers is also growing at an equally phenomenal rate, invading not only Mega Manila but Visayas and Mindanao as well.

Proof is the positive impact that Sun Cellular has to residents of premiere cities in the VisMin regions, from the Queen City of the South — Cebu, all the way to Mindanao’s pride — Cagayan De Oro and Davao. More and more people in these places are discovering the great ways through which Sun Cellular enriches lives because of its innovative products and relevant services at prices and rates within the reach of anybody.

In Cebu, take it from 23-year-old Jan Carlos Sevilla, a human resource assistant for a packaging company and also a young businessman himself. Whether at work or at home, he has been relying on Sun Cellular for over three years now to keep everything organized for him — all at a single affordable monthly plan. “I like Sun Cellular because it has this wide array of services that is very much affordable. I appreciate the longer talk time and the unlimited text service and its nationwide coverage.” he narrates.

In Cagayan de Oro, 20-year-old Dana Cudal, a coffee shop owner, keeps at par with fellow entrepreneurs when it comes to smart business management. “Sun’s plan rates are affordable. With my Sun Cellular phone, it is easy to monitor employees and contact suppliers. The network’s services make communication fast, cheap and easy,” she says.

The good news is that Sun Cellular is also even stronger in Davao, and Monique Villanueva, a proprietor of a pest control firm, shares her great experiences in the two years she’s been using Sun Cellular. “Our company chose Sun because it is the most affordable way for me, my secretary and technicians to communicate anytime of the day, given the 24-7 nature of our business. The benefits include quick response to urgent concerns,” says Monique. She not only uses Sun for business, she also reaps its benefits when it comes to her personal life.

Product for product and feature for feature, Sun Cellular shines! Where else can you enjoy most affordable and flexible loading options that the Sun Call and Text Combos offer. Available in P30 (CTC 30), P20 (CTC 20) and P10 (CTC 10) denominations, Sun Call & Text Combos are fully-packed with Sun-to-Sun calls and texts plus bonus text allocations to other networks. The enhanced Sun P20 Text Unlimited or TU20 (with unlimited Sun-to-Sun texts now with a bonus 20 minutes of Sun-to-Sun calls) and the revolutionary P25 Call & Text Unlimited (CTU25) that gives unlimited calls and texts valid for one day lead the field as far as unlimited services are concerned.

For more information about Sun Cellular products and offers, visit The Sun Shop nearest you or call the Sun Cellular hotline 200 from your Sun Phone or 395-8000 from a land phone, or log on to www.suncellular.com.ph.

Laguindingan airport 'partial' opening seen (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/cagayan-de-oro/laguindingan-airport-partial-opening-seen)

By Annabelle L. Ricalde

A “PARTIAL compromise agreement” had been reached between the Laguindingan Airport Development Project (LADP) and a number of settlers within the 400-hectare airport facility, Misamis Oriental Governor Moreno said.

The compromise agreement at the Court of Appeals (CA) two weeks ago paved the way for the on-going works at the P7.8 billion airport project to proceed at a faster rate, said Gov. Moreno during an ocular inspection late last week.

As of last week, Engineer Dehlia Capiceño, the project manager, reported that whole airport facility is already 37 percent completed; 92 percent for the airport's perimeter fence; 96.55 percent for the access road.

"We're always ahead by one percent per week of our completion target, so hopefully we'll finish it before the completion date," Capiceño told reporters.

The airport is expected to begin operating by the third quarter of 2011.

However, Moreno said the goal is to open the airport—even on an initial basis—before the end of President Gloria Arroyo's term expires next year.

Moreno said President Arroyo has expressed interest to see the partial opening of the airport before she bows out of office.

With the voluntary demolition of some 24 houses within the site recently, the governor said a partial opening next year was not farfetched. The IP settlers, in return, received the government's relocation package.

The CA case was filed by an indigenous people’s (IP) group whose members claimed they had not received proper compensation for the land that Ayala Corporation donated to LAPD.

Capicenio said the recent development has brought to 98 percent the total expropriated properties necessary for the LADP to speed up its construction works.

It was learned, however, that the IP had agreed to give up their houses and receive the compensation package on the condition that their case against Ayala be continued.

Capicenio said this is an ideal set-up at the outset, noting that LADP has nothing to do with the IP’s negotiation with Ayala, which has donated some 300 hectares into the project.

Currently, she said they are proceeding with civil works that include the runway, the passenger terminal building, air traffic control tower and operation building, cargo terminal building, maintenance building, power house building, administration building, cold water receiving station, fuel farm, and the waste water treatment plant that is 40 percent completed.

I only have the partial list for 2008 here (http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showpost.php?p=36499234&postcount=929). To be honest, I dont remember much of the conventions here in Davao, common na kasi yan. THe only convention I remember na big deal was the ASEAN tourism forum pero maliban dun wala na

dont worry, di ko naman kino contest ang title na "leading convention destination in Mindanao" "Having The Biggest Investment In Mindanao" and kung ano pang title title na hinohold nyo :)

Kaya nga. Since Taegon did not present it, then we're just waiting for you to take the initiative. Kayo ang mas nakakaalam kung anong conventions recently held in your city. I am not saying too that you're trying to judge us. I am not saying that I agree with Taegon, neither. Any forumer who could present data about conventions held in their city for the recent years (2006 up to present lang siguro) will be much welcomed. Kasi sa CdeO, we don't hide it. We even have a separate thread for it. :)

diba dapat the burden of proof is from your side? You claim to be the leading convention destination in mindanao therefore we are allowed to ask for the data to show how the rest of the cities in Mindanao fared versus CdeO as convention destinations. We are not contesting na we are the leading convention destination anyway, ang tinatanong lang namin how the different cities fared for you to come up with the conclusion

;36531428']So are you saying na you dont have the data that shows that cdeo is indeed the leading convention destination in Mindanao?

As I see it, you are only showing us the data for conventions in CdeO pero wala sa ibang lugar and from that list lang ninyo na conclude ang inyong claim

To prove Taegon wrong, present your data. :) I do not welcome any article. I prefer a data enumerating all the conventions held in Davao City, Zamboanga City, GenSan, and any city here in Mindanao to prove which City is the leading convention destination for the past three years. I am saying three years to limit the premise. Coz as far as I remember, Taegon did not claim that CdeO is the convention capital but the LEADING convention destination in Mindanao. So his claim is based on the status quo. :)

Iniiwasan mo lang ata aminin na wala kang data to support your claim eh.Paano mong nasabing leading ka kung di mo alam anong performance ng ibang lugar diba?

For 2007 alone.... Here's one article. As I said, you could present your data and let's have a healthy discussion. :)

Oro hosts 1,555 events in 1st semester

True to its name of being the most preferred convention destination in Mindanao, Cagayan de Oro hosted a total of 1,555 events during the first six months of this year.

Records from the Department of Tourism in Region 10 revealed that from January to June this year, there were 70 conventions, 848 seminar/workshops and 29,914 other gatherings held in the city.

Of the total number of conventions, seminar workshops and other gatherings held here in the first semester, seven were national events, 106 were regional events and 1,442 were city and provincial events.

The events that were held in Cagayan de Oro from January to June this year have brought in a total of 59,525 guests and delegates, the DOT-10 report indicated.

The city recorded a 79 percent hotel occupancy rate in the first quarter which rose to 84 percent in the second quarter of this year.

The Dept. of Tourism regional office attributed the continuous increase of events held in the city to its good peace and order situation and the strong collaboration between the government and the private sector.

At least two national conventions are set to be held in Cagayan de Oro next month. These are the National Convention of Nurses and the National Rubber Congress.

With this, City Mayor Constantino G. Jaraula said that the city government is doing its best to make Cagayan de Oro as the Number One Destination in the country.

Mayor Jaraula said that this can be achieved through the collaborative effort of all stakeholders in the tourism industry.

Already, the city government has instituted several steps to make Cagayan de Oro a more beautiful, more comfortable and more gracefully livable place for the residents and guests.

Among these steps are the clearing of sidewalks against illegal structures and vending activities, implementation of a multi-stakeholders traffic enforcement system, strengthening of the local public safety and security system, and the holding of interfaith dialogues with religious leaders. (CIO)

But that doesnt show how Cdeo fared against other destinations, where are the numbers that show the factual comparison? Who made the claim and how can they expect us to accept the claim without proper numbers?

numbers like these

1,442 were city and provincial events

could be the same for any regional capital..By the way, saan ba based an "the Mindanao current"?

The fact that you've blown those words is an insult to me. I find it unnecessary and too unbecoming of a professional like you to have stated those words. Respect my individuality.... And that's a demand. I rest my case. Last warning, or else I'll take this matter seriously.

Then do your share. Since you're an advocate of truth then be passionate about it. Look, I wasn't the one who made the claim. But I am doing my own research as my contribution to clear things up.

But thats not the issue here..The point I was raising was "how can you (or Taegon) come up with such claims kung wala naman palang concrete data to support such"

I may be an idiot in making research about these matters so I am not in the proper position to say which is which kaya I am relying on the person who made the claim to show me the data

I was asking for proper data to support the claim and simple lang naman ang sagot, either you (or taegon to be specific) have the data to support or wala

The fact that you've blown those words is an insult to me. I find it unnecessary and too unbecoming of a professional like you to have stated those words. Respect my individuality.... And that's a demand. I rest my case. Last warning, or else I'll take this matter seriously.

I do humbly apologize for my words If they have offended you. However your reaction is too much as I never insulted you as a personand in fact made it clear that I wasnt accusing you of avoiding the issue but rather cleared that "it appears to me" that you were avoiding the issue.. Calling my words "unbecoming for a professional" is also unecessary (why must we always make things personal when we are just dealing with SSC issues) IMO..

Taegon is claiming "Cagayan de Oro is the Leading Convention Destination in Mindanao." It may be true. For 2008-2009 alone, most of professions and fields(Surgeons, Engineers, Mathematicians, Lawyers, Masons, Nurses, Vice-mayors etc) had their annual national conventions in Cagayan de Oro. Take note: the word "leading." Again, whoever can enumerate the conventions held recently in their city will be appreciated. SSC forumers are always updated with events in their respective localities, right? :)

With all this drama of Davao vs. CDO in all aspects from tourism, industry pati narin peace & order ang masasabi ko lang let's just take the hard solid facts of what it "IS" & not "what could it be"...For me there is "NO" solid basis to stake a claim as most peaceful / progrssive / competitive / livable etc kasi these thing can't be really quantified dahil sa dami ng factors.

Let's just be content with the ROCK solid facts like Davao is the Biggest City in Mindanao or Northern Mindanao has the Biggest GDP in Mindanao...aside from that stating a claim on others will just cause misunderstanding

Siguro wala naman problema kung i-bandera namin yung na-oobserve namin. As far as people outside CDO would say, they prefer cdo kay barato in terms sa transpo expenses, at di naman masyado napapahuli sa amenities.

So i think it would be fair to our end to say good things in our city.

^^ Again, I respect AIM pero in my humble opinion, napakaraming "CLAIMS" na pwedeng i-contest because of the numerous "subjective" factors involved.

Maganda sana na people will start sticking to the "Non-Contestable" facts tulad ng Largest Land Area & Biggest GDP kasi no one can dispute them, sa gayon the world will be a more harmonious place to live in.

nakikita ko kasi minsan na ma pride kayo masyado..Gaya nung pagtanong ko kung may data ba kayo tapos nagpaligoy ligoy pa kayo imbes na maging humble para aminin na wala) kaya minsan pinipiga ko kayo (to learn to be humble)

wala naman masama sa paggawa ng claims as long as you can back it up with proper data or evidence..ang mahirap eh yung pag kinakara natin ang ating bangko pero di natin kayang suportahan tapos pag may nag usisa eh di tayo humble enough na aminin na di natin ito masuportahan (then magagalit at iibahin ang usapan)

Thats not a very accurate way of analyzing the issue IMO..porket walang makapagpresinta ng data to rebuke my claim eh my claim remains correct? anong klaseng analysis yan? How were you able to come up with such a conclusion in the first place kung di mo kinumpara ang iyong performance sa iba.

Ang punto ko nun eh just to ask if may tamang basehan ba ang claim ninyo..My primary intention was just to ask how valid the claim was kaya ayaw kong maglabas ng figures from my side kasi nga i expected taegon to have his proper data since nakapag come up sya ng conclusion..

anyway, if we follow your principle should I be able to conclude na Davao is the leading business and convention destination based on total volume of hotel occupancy until proven otherwise? (parang mali diba?)

heres the figure for the 2007 Davao City's hotel occupancy

641, 161

business purpose- 44% x 641,161= 283, 110

conventions/seminars= 28% x 641, 161= 179, 525

^^ Do note that malaki ang posibilidad na kulang pa ang mga listahan na iyan..both lists arent official data :) yan ang punto ko..listahan lang natin yan and based lang sa observation natin at hindi yan official nor is it a list by a well established body

;36534486']nakikita ko kasi minsan na ma pride kayo masyado..Gaya nung pagtanong ko kung may data ba kayo tapos nagpaligoy ligoy pa kayo imbes na maging humble para aminin na wala) kaya minsan pinipiga ko kayo (to learn to be humble)

wala naman masama sa paggawa ng claims as long as you can back it up with proper data or evidence..ang mahirap eh yung pag kinakara natin ang ating bangko pero di natin kayang suportahan tapos pag may nag usisa eh di tayo humble enough na aminin na di natin ito masuportahan (then magagalit at iibahin ang usapan)

My point there Michael_Ray was that you (or taegon to be specific) made a claim without prior supporting facts..(at na sana eh iwasan natin ang ganyang ugali)

Tapos for all we know kulang pa ang list ninyo and list ng Davao..and what about GenSan and Zamboanga and other Mindanao cities?

PS

Mods, pasensya na for this OT discussion pero at least we are discussing it in a civil manner..and I think this is could be a start of the peace between the 2 sides kasi inaayos naman namin ang aming mga problema sa isat isa (imbes na away at parinigan)

Again, I would like to reiterate that there's nothing wrong with inquiries as long as it is done in a professional approach. If you find a forumer "maangas," and perceive his act as a mistake, do you correct it by another mistake? Another point, since Taegon failed to present facts from other cities then I ask all forumers from all cities in Mindanao to present facts just like what you did. With that, we could compare figures. If the person who made the claim was unreliable, then let's straighten things by taking the initiative of doing our own research. If we can present it here, eventually it will clear things up. That's not an obligation, that's just a suggestion. Since we know what's going on in our cities then might as well let's help shed a light in this forum and put our inputs here rather than wait for someone and do nothing about it. And we're talking about conventions.... :)

like I said, whatever list we can come up with (as long as ganyang method ang susundin natin) is most probably inaccurate so useless na pagpagurin natin ang isat isa to come up with the list unless official data ang meron tayo..that said, it appears na taegon made the claim without having the official numbers that say CdeO is indeed the leading convention destination in Mindanao

sige nga para matigil na ito..isang tanong isang sagot lang

May official data ba kayo that clearly says that CdeO is the leading convention destination in Mindanao? Meron o Wala?

Wala. And there's no data supporting otherwise saying that other cities in Mindanao emerged as one. So let Taegon celebrate his claim. Nobody from CdeO even bothered to question your fellow forumers claim that Metro Davao has more conventions than Metro Cebu. That claim was made last April. I think it's in future Mega Metros thread. regading that last statement....Butuan has overtaken Zambo and Gensan as far as convention hosting (both in numbers and significance) is concerned...even that influential Bishops Ulama meets.... which these two cities used to hold are now even hosted here in BXU :)

Meron o Wala would have sufficed

but thank you for the answer anyway :)

PS with regards to that Davao versus Cebu comparison sa convention stats, di ko nabasa yun eh pero had I read that I would have said "wa ka kuyapi? mas daghan convention sa Davao kaysa Cebu?" Yes Im more harsh to my fellow Davaoenos more than anyone here in SSC (I think my fellow Davao SSCers know that already lol)

have you ever been to CdeO bai? if never pa... i can understand your statement. CdeO is just not fit for tourism. Wala man tawon kay makit-an dinhi nga white beach and white island, underground cathedral river, and other natural spots palawan and bohol have to offer. if you seek for thrill and adventure though, CdeO is just the place to be...Personally, if my friends from other place else like manila and cebu come to CdeO for fun, i introduce them to white water rafting and stuffs... or else, i'd send them to Camiguin which is just about an hour and half travel by bus and ferry. :)

Diba kasama ang Camiguin sa one of the most preferred tourist destinations in the country? :)

Sa bagay, pag ang foreign and local tourists ay pumupunta sa Camiguin, ENTRY and EXIT POINT naman ang CdeO.

Most of the Southern and Northern Mindanaon tourists (except Caraga) ay bumabyahe pa sa CdeO port or they can go to Balingoan port for Camiguin.

Most of the tourists from Luzon mabarko man or ma-eroplano ay pumupunta pa dito sa CdeO bago Camiguin. Anyway, may small airport naman ang Camiguin.

Same also with the foreign tourists.

And if nasa Cebu or in Bohol ka, may direct naman na byahe to Camiguin. But in some cases, daming tourists sa Visayas gusto muna dito sa CdeO para magshop or ano bang gawin nila bago trip to Camiguin.

Or from Camiguin, marami namang tourists ay pumupunta rin not only in CdeO (lalo na yang very famous Wild Water Rafting), but other Northern Mindanaon tourists destinations. Gusto pa kasi nila magenjoy pa para sulit naman ang trip nila considering na malapit lang ang CdeO from Camiguin.

So again, CdeO being the ENTRY and EXIT POINT has been proud of having not only Camiguin, but also the vast pineapple plantation in Bukidnon, Maria Christina falls in Iligan, tourist destinations in Misamis Oriental, and even to the some extent Aquamarine Park in MisOc.

The point is kahit di man kasali ang CdeO, eh ang Camiguin as one of the most preferred tourist destinations in the country ay nakacontribute naman ng economic growth sa CdeO at kahit sa ibang cities and provinces ng Normin. ^^

That's why masaya kami sa Camiguin!

Top Ten Vacation Spots

Explore Philippines!

Traveling is surely a way of relaxing and sharing moments with special people in our life. To help you have an idea about the best place that can be found here in the Philippines, I listed my top ten hot spots for vacation. Honestly, I've never been to some of the places listed here but I'm pretty sure that one day I will visit those places. It is a dream for me to visit all of those places. As of this time, I visited some of the ten hot spots that I listed below. Since these are vacation spots, I don't need to elaborate the names of the hotels, resorts and houses where you can stay. I'm sure there's always a place for you to relax and enjoy.

1. Bicol - Donsol, Mayon Volcano
Donsol in Sorsogon, Philippines is definitely one of the places that everyone would love. This place offers a wide variety of diversion including scuba diving, snorkeling, and more water activities.
One thing that makes this place unique - the Philippine "butandings". "Butandings" or whale sharks are big fishes not whales and harmless. Imagine you can swim beside those gentle giants whose actual size is about 10-20 meters in length! I'm looking forward for this great encounter with the sea giants!
Aside form Donsol in Sorsogon, Bicol, the country's most active volcano and the most perfect shaped volcano cone in the world is there. For those nature lovers this is for you. You can enjoy mountain climbing, hiking, camping, and biking through the eco trails. You can also relax on their spring resorts.

2. Palawan - Tubbataha Reef, Puerto-Princesa Subterranean River National Park
Palawan is truly a paradise for most Filipinos. Palawan is dotted with 1700+ islands and islets, rocky coves, and sugar-white sandy beaches. You can also enjoy its virgin forests and mountain ranges where you can find more than 200 kinds of birds, 600 species of butterflies, the endangered sea turtle, and 200+ unique animals.
Palawan is also the place for 2 nominees for the "The New 7 Wonders of Nature". The Tubattaha Reef (Rank #5 as of 27-OCT-2008 05:00 GMT) and Puerto-Princesa Subterranean River National Park(Rank #1 as of 27-OCT-2008 05:00 GMT). The Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park features a limestone mountain landscape with an 8.2 km. navigable underground river while the Tubbataha Reef offers over one thousand water species, including manta rays, lionfish, tortoises, clownfish and sharks.

3.Cagayan De Oro - WhiteWater Rafting
A place located is located in Mindanao. Cagayan de Oro offers all-year round Whitewater Rafting. For people who's always looking for an extreme adventure, this is great for you. With its three hours long whitewater rafting you can enjoy 14 different rapids. They also have the adventure park known as the Macahambus Cave and Malasag Eco-Tourism Village and Gardens which offers a sky bridge that is 120 meters long and 120 meters high. You can also rappel down or try the "slide for life".

4. Bohol - Chocolate Hills
At Rank #4 for the "New 7 Wonders of Nature" (as of27-OCT-2008 05:00 GMT), without a doubt you will enjoy its scenic view, fresh air, resorts and wildlife. 1,268 perfectly cone-shaped hills (40 -120 meters in height) make the Chocolate Hills popular. These hills are green during wet season and brown during dry season that looks like endless row of "kisses" chocolate. Of course, in this province you will find the world's smallest primates (the Philippine Tarsiers) some diving spots, and powdery white sand beaches.

5. Batangas - Anilao***, Taal Volcano
In Anilao, divers can choose from any of the 24 dive sites. The most popular site is the Cathedral (average of 60 ft.), a roofless cavern with a blessed cross flanked by two large sea mounts. It is also the place for the discovery of new water species like water slugs.
In Batangas, you will also experience to appreciate the beauty of the world's lowest and smallest volcano, the Taal Volcano. It is very unique because it is a volcano within an islet within a lake within a crater within a volcano. It is also known as a volcano within a volcano. You can also ride a boat going to the volcano to enjoy relaxing trips, mountain hiking, trekking and biking. There's also a place to stay there at the tip of the volcano.

6. Surigao Del Norte - Siargao
This newly discovered island boasts of white-sand beaches and surfing waves compared to that of Hawaii. The tear-shaped Siargao opened itself to the international surfing community by playing host to the Siargao Surfing Cup.

7. Panay - Boracay Island
The best part of the island is the four-kilometer White Beach hailed as the "finest beach in the world." There is plenty to do other than beachbumming and partyhopping. For the bit of scuba diving, a little bit of trekking, a little bit of mountain biking, and a little bit of golf. On the eastern side of the island is the boardsailor's mecca that draws enthusiasts from all over the world.
Trekking, mountain biking, sail boating and kayaking are popular sporting activities. Dive sites surround the island. Fairways and Bluewater Resort Golf and Countryclub has an 18-hole championship course.
One of the best and well known tourists spot.

8.Baguio - Banaue Rice Terraces
It is known as the "summer capital" of the Philippines. The cold climate, 1500+ meters above sea level mountain ranges are home for what we called "Eighth Wonder of the World". The Banaue Rice Terraces and other terraces in this province are built by their ancestors thousands of years ago, with the use of their hands. No big machines and trucks, just minimal hand tools. This is really a man-made.
This is also the best place for tourist that wants to relax and enjoy a simple life in the country's Flower City.

9. Zambales -Subic
Subic the former US naval base in the Philippines is an all in one tourists spot. Subic offers a full view of the blue mountain and sea and of the green background of a three-layered virgin forest.
Fun never stops with bowling, arcade center,a ship wharf past a restricted forested area, firing ranges, fishing grounds and an area for bungee jumping. You can also take a 12-hour jungle survival course, visit an Aeta tribal village, take a bay cruise, explore the coves, end up at the white-sand beach of Grande Island, engage in water sports, go horseback riding or simply enjoy the scenic view of the sea.
Subic offers new attractions like the Zoobic Safari that will let you experience a tropical forest adventure, meet the tigers and other animals. Ocean Adventures where you can play with dolphins and watch shows. The Equestrian Center showcases different breeds of horses.

10. Manila - Manila Ocean Park, Rizal Park, Walls of Intramuros and more
The Manila Ocean Park is the latest attraction added in Manila. Located at the bay, you can enjoy and have a deeper understanding about marine life and animals. This is larger than Sentosa Oceanarium in Singapore, and built with a sea tunnel (which I don't recommend for claustrophobic)
You can also explore the Rizal Park, a good place to walk and relax. Visit the Japanese Garden, the Planetarium. Near Rizal Park is the Intramuros or "walled city", built during Spanish colonization, a place where you can find dungeons, old churches and Spanish architecture.
Many Five Star Hotels are located in this city. Manila, the capital of the Philippines and I'm proud that this is my hometown.

Note: you can always look on the internet for pictures of these tourists spots.

BUt its better than a blog though na walang data and opinionated lang ang gawa ng top 10

TO me I think they just tabulated the top 15 places based on tourist arrivals (not sure if visitor arrivals or hotel occupancy though)

I still consider CAGAYAN DE ORO to be one of the top destinations in the Philippines despite not being in the list shown above. SMART even considered CdeO as the last stop in the HOT SUMMER SAMAHAN BARKADA ROAD TRIP.

its as accurate as it can get imo kasi sila ang agency na nagmomonitor ng tourism stats. My guess is this is a filtered stat for tourist arrivals based on certain indicators (ie guests that registered sa inns and hotels) imbes na yung bigger stats ng passenger volume (ie roro passengers na di naman turista pero bumiyahe o dumaan sa isang lugar) tapos yung top 15 lang sa volume ang pinublish nila..

anyway heres an excerpt from another article

Increased Travel in Key Destinations
Tourist arrivals in top destinations of the country during the first quarter of 2009 grew by 10.33% for a total of 1.3 Million1.
Cebu attracted the biggest volume of visitors with a share of 32% followed by Boracay (12%), Davao City (11.9%), Camarines Sur (11%), Zambales (7%), and Bohol (5%).

Domestic tourist arrivals to Puerto Princesa City and Coron in Palawan posted a record breaking growth of 392% as more flights were mounted to these destinations from Manila, Cebu, and Caticlan as well as Kota Kinabalu in Malaysia. Likewise, local visitors flocked to Camarines Sur for wakeboarding, Surigao del Sur, Sorsogon (Donsol) for whale shark interaction, Zambales (Subic) for recreation, Ilocos Norte and La Union for sightseeing and beach holiday resulting in double digit gains in these destinations.

Overall, the volume of domestic tourists visiting key destinations grew faster at 13% while foreign arrivals recorded a 4% hike in the first quarter.
Cebu was the most frequently visited destination by foreign tourists with 184,790 arrivals followed by Boracay (63,903), Zambales (25,252), Camarines Sur (24,976), and Bohol (24,350).

Well, at the end of the day.... If nobody can enumerate the conventions held in any places in Mindanao other than CdeO for the last three years then it might lead into a presumption na "wala nga sigurong convention na naganap or konti lang siguro." For all forumers in Mindanao, if you think that your city has the most number of conventions as of the status quo then prove Taegon wrong. He failed to show your facts. Since you know your city best, for sure alam nyo ang mga conventions and events in your area. Taegon's claim is simple. CDO is the leading convention destination in Mindanao and he enumerated all the recently held conventions in this part of the island. Eh halos lahat na ata ng malalaking conventions nandun na. :)

Very well said bro:okay:

 sa mga lugar nga napabilang sa listahan na yan. Pero mahaba pa ang laban first quarter pa lang yan and during that time (january specifically) mabaha ang CDeO at iba pang parte ng North Mindanao.

Jans sport, mahal yun 10 years ago, even until now its still expensive. I dont realy know I guess its the quality, but for me it looks too plain and simple. I'd rather wear or buy things that looks great rather than brand names. yes it gives that "rich" impreession but seriously do we realy need those?

no offense to anyone, but I think companies like Lacoste are over pricing thier Goods.
the damn thing Looks so plain and yet has a price tag 3-5 times more than regular.

I think people are relying to much on the hype, and lacoste company are taking advatage of it.

I agree, 101 %. medyo OT na 'to but even here in Saudi Arabia, Lacoste items are very, very expensive!:bash: I'd rather buy from Esprit or Zara. Luckily, these brands are not so expensive here as compared diyan sa Pinas. :)

Sana may mga taga-DOT na makapagbigay linaw.

Para sa akin, hindi pa rin reliable ang mga ganitong listahan.

I don't really care what the survey says from gov't agencies, private pollings agencies, from some blogs, from stupid morons who are just "soya jones" about CDO. What I care is what I see every time I visit CDO and NorMin, whether it's good or bad.

- Sometimes gov't agencies are LAZY and INACCURATE in collecting data. They are after all gov't agencies.

- Private polling agencies can skew the result to justify in favour of the paying third party.

- newspapers just want to sell newspaper....and Magazine articles wants to make their sponsors happy... :)

1st Metro CDO Real Estate Summit in June 2009

Posted on May 12, 2009. Filed under: Uncategorized | Tags: Ayala, Cagayan de Oro, CREBA |

The Chamber of Real Estate and Builders’ Associations, Inc. (CREBA) Cagayan de Oro Chapter is organizing the 1st Metro CDO Real Estate Summit in June 26, 2009 with Jaime Augusto Zobel de Ayala as suggested Keynote Speaker.

CREBA CDO’s primary advocacy is making Metro CDO the new economic hub of VisMin. It shall be developmental in approach in relation with its members, and diplomatic in relation with the government and non-government organizations.

Below are the details of the Summit:

Theme Metro CDO: The Emerging Economic Hub in VizMin
Convenor Office of the City Mayor Constantino Jaraula
Co-presentors CREBA, OroChamber, OroBankers, Promote CDO, SHDA, Filipino-Chinese Chamber
Venue Grand Ballroom, Xavier Estates Sports and Country Club
Date/Time Friday, June 26, 2009 , 10:00am to 4:00pm (tentative)

Suggested Keynote Speaker
Jaime Augusto Zobel de Ayala

Rationale

Metro Cagayan de Oro has grown substantially in the last few years. Major land developments and government infrastructure projects have propelled growth in the city to new heights.

There is a felt need, however, to rationalize these various development projects to assure a sustainable real estate growth in the city and its neighboring areas. Private real estate companies, government units, and other stakeholders should work together and come up with a cohesive development strategy and well-coordinated project implementation.

The First Metro CDO Real Estate Summit ‘09 is therefore envisioned as the initial forum and venue for the various stakeholders to articulate their ideas, suggestions and recommendations for a comprehensive plan of action that will provide sustainable development for Cagayan de Oro and its neighboring areas.

Critical Areas for Development
Some critical areas that need to be addressed in the First Metro CDO Real Estate Summit are the following, to wit:

a) updated land use, zoning, and environment
b) policies on real estate tax assessments and zonal valuation
c) land development permit processing
d) coordinated infrastructure program (roads, electricity, water, and telecoms)
e) marketing and promotion of Metro CDO as the Emerging Economic Hub of VizMin.

Other areas may be considered which may be crucial in coming up with a comprehensive development plan to attain real estate development sustainability.

Summit Objectives

1. To gather the top 100 decision makers in CDO and its neighboring areas to formulate a comprehensive strategic plan for a sustainable real estate development in Metro CDO.

2. To identify and present the top pressing issues confronting the real estate stakeholders in the area and to come up with action plans and programs to address these issues.

3. To provide a vehicle for future discussion and deliberation of the various stakeholders for better communication between the private sector and the government.

Methodology

A series of small group discussions will be conducted prior to the First Metro CDO Real Estate Summit ‘09. At least five subgroups will be formed to tackle the top five critical issues for sustainable development. Each subgroup will be co-chaired by a representative in the private sector and the government. They are tasked to come up with recommendations on how to address various concerns in each group category.

A general body, composed of the various chairmen of each subgroup, will regularly meet to consolidate and rationalize the various outputs of each subgroup, to come up with one consolidated position paper.

The consolidated position paper will then be presented during the First Metro CDO Real Estate Summit.

Expected Participants

We expect to gather the top 100 decision makers in Cagayan de Oro City and its neighboring areas, both from the private and government sectors. In particular, we will invite the following:

a. Elected Officials (City Mayor, Governor, Congressmen, City Councilors)
b. Heads of Government Agencies Related to Real Estate Development
c. Leaders of the Following Private Groups (Oro Chamber, Filipino-Chinese Chamber, Oro Bankers, SHDA, and other business groups)
d. Heads of Major Corporations in the area, universities, hospitals, tourism destinations.
e. Other prime movers in the locality like big landowners and major investors.

It is envisioned that the activity will coincide with the general monthly meeting per business organization. A joint general meeting of the different participating business groups will heighten the summit. And it is expected that the Office of the Mayor Constantino Jaraula that will spearhead this activity.

Oro Chamber's BEST Expo '09 to make Northern Mindanao an investment, tourism hub
by Rutchie Cabahug-Aguhob

Cagayan de Oro City (13 May) -- The campaign to make Northern Mindanao as a hub for investment and tourism continues.

This is the message that the Oro Chamber of Commerce and Industry Foundation, Inc. (ORO Chamber) wants to send to the business community with the conduct of the Oro Business Enterprises Services and Trade (BEST) Expo 2009 on October 8-10, this year.

Oro Chamber President Rodolfo I. Meñes said BEST Expo is designed to continue the campaign to promote and enhance the competitiveness of local businesses with Cagayan de Oro as the hub for investment and tourism in the region.

"Now on its 3rd year, the 3-day event will include activities, such as exhibits, business matching and learning sessions to showcase diverse business opportunities, stimulate investments, promote best practices and strengthen existing and potential business ventures," he said.

Meanwhile, Oro Chamber has organized a public forum on the theme "Finding Alternatives and Solutions to the Impacts of the Global Economic Crisis" on May 28, this year, at the VIP Hotel, this city.

Aimed at facilitating discourse and exchange, among the various stakeholders, of solutions and alternatives to mitigate the impacts of the economic crisis, the activity will be done in collaboration with the Foundation for a Sustainable Society, Inc. (FSSI), the Freedom from Debt Coalition and MASS-SPECC.

Meñes said the forum will include the following topics: The Global Economic Crisis: Assessment and Response of the National Government," "Perspective for the Civil Society Sector, Challenges in MSME, Local Government Unit Initiatives, Local Response to Global Economic Challenges, MSME Sector: Surviving on a Period of Crisis, Community Experiences Sailing Though Rough Times and Cooperatives Amidst Economic Crisis.

interesting din na wala ang Baguio sa list above (1st Q)...

Maybe CAR, R-X data were not included or hasn't submitted yet. In previous stats by DOT in MS excel, some regions have no data.

and I don't think Zambales (5th) down to La Union (15th) outranks Baguio. IMO, Baguio would be next to Cebu...CdeO could just be between 4th and 7th.

CEB now flies Davao-Cagayan de Oro

GOING to Cagayan de Oro from Davao and vice versa will now be a breeze fast and easy. Gokongwei-owned airline Cebu Pacific (CEB) flies direct from Davao to Cagayan de Oro today.

The direct thrice-weekly service (Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday) leaves Davao at 6 p.m. and lands in Cagayan de Oro at 6:50 p.m. The return flight leaves Cagayan de Oro at 7:10 p.m. and arrives in Davao at 8 p.m.

Director Catalino Chan of the Department of Tourism (DOT) Northern Mindanao, which covers Cagayan de Oro, said: “We welcome the new route as it is a good connection from the international flights from Davao. We are very glad as it will surely increase foreign arrivals here and improve the economy of our nearby areas like Camiguin, Bukidnon and Lanao.”

CEB’s newest route utilizes a 72-seater ATR aircraft, and its lowest year-round Go Lite fare starts from P688 all-in. Passengers with check-in baggage will just add P200.

“We are very proud of the Davao-Cagayan de Oro route because it will really make traveling between the two cities extremely convenient. What used to be a 10-hour trip is now only 50 minutes, opening up a lot of tourism and business potentials in this dynamic area of Mindanao,” said Candice Iyog, CEB vice president for marketing and distribution.

She encouraged everyone to book via www.cebupacificair.com [1], the reservations hotline at 02-70-20-888 (Manila) / 032-230-8888 (Cebu), or their nearest travel agent.

CEB, the largest airline operating in both cities, flies from Davao to Cagayan de Oro, Cebu, Iloilo, Manila, and Zamboanga. The airline also flies from Cagayan de Oro to Cebu and Manila.

Now on its 14th year, CEB has the youngest aircraft fleet in the Philippines. It flies to 14 international cities across Asia and 31 domestic destinations. (Press release)

Once again the Misamis Oriental-1 Rural Electric Service Cooperative bags nine awards from the National Electrification Administration (NEA) Lumens Awards held recently in Davao City.

The awards that the electric coop achieved would strengthen its member-consumers that the power provider is reliable and competent in delivering electric power.

Ms. Edna Diango, member services department manager, said that Engr. Julie B. Real is again given the honor as outstanding general manager, adding that this award has been received by its general manager since the 2003 until this year.

Besides that, the electric coop was able to maintain its systems loss at single digit said Diango.

She then attributed the power coop’s success to the culture of the people they are serving and its employees.

Diango claimed that member-consumers are cooperative.

They pay their power bills on time and even report to the management those who violate the pilferage law.

Lastly, the cooperation of its employees by rendering extra services even with out pay has contributed in strengthening its organization to deliver electric power effectively and efficiently to its member-consumers, disclosed Diango.

OT:

data for year 2008...comparison between Boracay & Baguio

interesting din na wala ang Baguio sa list above (1st Q)...

Maybe CAR, R-X data were not included or hasn't submitted yet. In previous stats by DOT in MS excel, some regions have no data.

and I don't think Zambales (5th) down to La Union (15th) outranks Baguio. IMO, Baguio would be next to Cebu...CdeO could just be between 4th and 7th.

source: http://www.nscb.gov.ph/headlines/StatsSpeak/2009/041309_rav_tourism.asp

Mao bitaw. Kulang gyod ang napublished nga data.

The data listed, I think, is accurate... Pero, wa lagi ang Manila, Baguio, etc... Basin di ni complete na listahan... And, to the delight of some people... Ha! Ha! Ha! Mugbo kaayo ug kalipay, no? Will somebody try to find out if this is a complete list... 7000+ man gani ang bisita diri sa atoa during the ANCOM... 1 week ra gani to... Pero, Wa lang naapil sa period na gipakita ni NBRDVO... Way, do you honestly think complete ang listahan? You are in pursuit of the truth man, di ba? Prove to us ba di ka biased... This is a challenge to Waway and to everybody in pursiuit of TRUTH! This is the time to prove yourselves! :-)

The battle took place on May 14, 1900 in the present-day Barangay Agusan.

The deadly confrontation became inevitable when around 80 American soldiers, led by Commanding Officer Walter B. Elliott of Company I, 40th Infantry Regiment USV, attempted to dislodge about 500 guerillas entrenched on a hill with 200 rifles and shotguns.

The committee recently invited cafe owners for a dialogue this morning after receiving numerous complaints from parents that their children have been distracted from their studies because of internet cafés.Councilor Barba said a city ordinance prohibits owners from allowing minors, elementary and high school students from playing games in cafés from 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM.He said the minors should be able to present a consent slip issued by parents before they be allowed to enter the premises.Copies of the ordinance will be given to all operators after which strict implementation will start, Barba said, adding that random inspections will be conducted by the committee. The education committee will also make the necessary recommendation to the Regulatory and Complaint Board. The councilor asked the owners to use their highest discretion when decisions should be made as they will be held accountable for the violation. AMENDMENTOwners of internet cafés are requesting for the amendment of certain provisions of the ordinance. They proposed a 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM prohibition would serve the purpose, saying most classes end at 5:00 PM.The owners likewise requested for a provision that would allow them to use the café during noon break as some request to work on their assignments.Councilor Barba said his committee will review the proposal considering that it was enacted in 2002.“We will take this into consideration. We might amend the ordinance to suit it with the changing of times,” he pointed out. (LCR)

UK lifts travel restriction to parts of Mindanao (http://www.philstar.com/Article.aspx?articleId=467916&publicationSubCategoryId=200)
Updated May 15, 2009 11:34 AM

MANILA, Philippines – The Department of Foreign Affairs said in a news release today that according to a report from the Philippine Embassy in London, the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) has amended its travel advisory to the Philippines.

The amended travel advisory lifted travel restrictions to the east side of Mindanao, report said.

The British Government has advised its citizens not to travel to any part of Mindanao due to “terrorist and insurgent activity” for more than two years. This discouraged British travelers from travelling to Mindanao.

According to the DFA, "the amendment to the UK’s travel restrictions to Mindanao is a positive development that could now allow British citizens to obtain travel insurance for purposes of enjoying the surfs of Siargao, the idyllic sands of Pearl Farm in Davao City and white-water rafting in Cagayan de Oro, among others."

British tourists account for the biggest number of European tourists to the Philippines. In 2008, a total of 70,807 UK citizens visited the Philippines, representing a year-on-year increase of around 14 percent.

The Department of Tourism is working to attract more British tourists with the introduction of varied travel packages including scuba diving and bird-watching, the DFA said.

At this time, I believe Mr. Jaime Zobel de Ayala will have the opportunity for ocular inspection mismo in his properties here in Cagayan de Oro and Laguindingan. ^^

At this time again, makikita na rin niya personally ang advantages when it comes to moneymaking ng "very strategic location" niyang lote sa CM Recto. MapaWOW siguro siya noh? :)

After that, ano na kaya ang iisipin niya about his plan sa lote diyan sa CM Recto? LOL ^^

Microtel gets tax incentives
THE NEW branch of Microtel Inns & Suites in Palawan has been granted tax perks, the Board of Investments said yesterday.

The P106-million, two-storey hotel in San Jose, Puerto Princesa City owned by Nemo Beach Hotel Corp. has 50 rooms and will have 20 workers once operations start in June, the board said.

The state agency granted the project a non-pioneer status, qualifying it for a four-year income tax holiday, among other incentives. Under the 2008 Investment Priorities Plan, tourist accommodations are among preferred business activities entitled to perks.

The Palawan hotel brings the total number of Microtel branches in the country to nine.

The board also granted incentives to two mass-housing projects: Firm Builders Realty Development Corp.’s P94.459-million investment in Cagayan de Oro City and Cathay Land, Inc.’s P55.576-million condominium in Cavite.

Firm Builders, whose major stockholder is Teofisto L. Guingona III, will be hiring 92 workers to build 146 horizontal units on a 2.46-hectare lot in Puli, Upper Carmen, Cagayan de Oro City.
Cathay Land, meanwhile, will be employing 154 workers to construct a six-storey building in Silang, Cite. The condominium building will have 114 units.

Both projects will start commercial operations in June as well, the board said. — J.A.D. Hermosa

Di pa yata ipinakita kung saan ba talaga etong proposed Microtel.

Dahil isa ang PHINMA na magdadala ng Microtel dito, hindi ba diyan ilalagay sa malaking lote sa likod ng COC? :D

City commemorates Battle of Agusan Hill (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/cagayan-de-oro/city-commemorates-battle-agusan-hill)

TODAY, May 14, is the 109th anniversary of the Battle of Agusan Hill, the historic war that pitted local revolutionaries against the well-armed Americans.

The attack was successful -- two Americans were killed and three were wounded. The Filipinos suffered 38 casualties, including guerilla’s leader, Captain Vicente Roa. The Americans also captured 35 Remington rifles.

Historian A. Paulita Roa said the Filipino revolutionaries belonged to the 1st Company of the Mindanao Battalion.

“Their commanding officer, Captain Vicente Roa, displayed such unusual bravery even if outnumbered by the enemy that when he died, an American soldier got one of his medals as a memento from this valiant Kagay-anon,” said Roa, a member of the Cagayan de Oro Heritage Council.

The local government, she said, will commemorate the Battle of Agusan Hill Thursday in a ceremony attended by the descendants of the guerillas.

She said all the remains of the heroes of this battle are interred at the base of a monument in Divisoria that bears the Spanish is inscription "El pueblo a sus heroes (From the town to its heroes)."

Mga matatapang talaga yun mga founding forefathers natin! Anyway, may monumento ba ni Captain Vicente Roa diyan sa Agusan Hill? Or ano naman kaya ang inilalagay ng ating local historians sa hill na yan, as another heritage site?

BOC Northern Mindanao collection up 48.79% in '08
by Rutchie Cabahug-Aguhob

Cagayan de Oro City (14 May) -- A total of P3.92 billion in customs duties and other taxes have been collected by the Bureau of Customs, District No.10 (BOC-10), last year.

"This amount is actually higher by 48.79%, over our collection of P2.63 billion in the previous year and exceeded by P1.022 billion or 35.32% higher compared to our target of P2.89 billion for 2008," Atty. Abedin P. Macapasir, BOC-10 District Collector, said.

On a monthly basis, October posted the highest collection with P382.91 million, followed by September with P378.79 million.

This was probably because importation was high during these period because people already start their shopping in preparation for the Christmas season.

The rest of the months posted the following amount of collection: July, P355.95 million, June, P352.86 million, January, P342.08 million and August, P340.67 million.

May, P339.05 million, April, P333.92 million, November, P296.66 million, March, P281.24 million, February, P277.78 million and December, P232.88 million.

In terms of performance of the ports within the area of responsibility of BOC-10, the Mindanao International Container Port (MICT) in Tagoloan, Misamis Oriental posted the highest collection of P2.19 billion.

This was followed by the Cagayan de Oro City Port, P1.25 billion, Iligan City Port, P469.66 million and lowest in Ozamiz City Port with P9.87 million.

The highest collection was posted in the month of March with P366.26 million, followed by January, P304.64 million and February, P270.79 million, Macapasir added. (PIA-10) [top]:cheers::cheers:

Department of Trade and Industry shows that the five provinces in Northern Mindanao posted a total export earning of at least $889.55 million last year being “A major factor in the increase was the devaluation of the peso over the dollar,” said DTI 10 Regional Director Alicia V. Eusena.

Statistics show the biggest share amounting to $524.33 million was posted by Misamis Oriental followed by Lanao del Norte where steel industry and crude oil are the prominent exports with $298.54 million.

Third was Bukidnon with $65.94 million or 7.41% for its fresh pineapple and bananas, as well as rubber, and Misamis Occidental and Camiguin with $0.56 million and $0.18 million or 0.06% and 0.02% respectively.

Philippines: Mango growers urged to use modern post-harvest methods (http://www.freshplaza.com/news_detail.asp?id=43637)

In an effort to meet the rigid quarantine requirements of target export markets, and with the expansion of mango production in Northern Mindanao, growers must now be equipped with modern and proper post-harvest technologies.

Just recently, the 40-member Mango Growers Association of Iligan City (MAGIC) and the 30-member Cagayan-Misamis Oriental-Bukidnon Mango Growers, each received hot water treatment (HWT) facilities from the Department of Agriculture (DA).

On the other hand, the United States Agency for International Development’s (USAID’s) Growth with Equity in Mindanao (GEM) Program provided the initial design of the facilities and organized hands-on training for the association members.

It was learned that the HWT process, which entails immersing green mature mangoes in a water bath for ten minutes at a temperature range between 52°C to 55°C, arrests the development of diseases in the fruit.

Countries like Japan, South Korea and the US require the more costly vapor heat treatment for mango imports, but other markets require HWT only.

“Growers in Iligan are working to make our fruits export-friendly. Once they’ve passed through the HWT facility, the mangoes can be shipped to Hong Kong and China,” said MAGIC president Linda Halibas, who said that non-association growers in the area could also avail of the facility.

Last year, Mindanao exported about 2,300 metric tons of fresh mango that is valued at more than $3.5 million, representing a volume increase of about 16 percent over the previous year.

There is also a demand for processed fruit – last year, Mindanao directly exported dried mangoes valued at approximately $1.4 million, and mango juices and purees with an estimated total value of $1.1 million.

The GEM program has worked in partnership with the Mindanao Fruit Industry Council and other industry proponents in developing off-season mango production and in strengthening the production supply chain by encouraging more private investments in quarantine treatment facilities like VHT and HWT.

Earlier, also in partnership with the DA and the local government, the GEM Program facilitated the design and training management of an HWT facility for the Moro United Multi-Purpose Cooperative, comprised of former combatants of the Moro National Liberation Front and their families, in Carmen, North Cotabato.

New Books for CDO Public Schools (http://www.pueblodeoro.com/project_update.php)

http://www.pueblodeoro.com/admin/wysiwyg_x/assets/stacks-of-books-in-oro-cham.jpg

A total 17,732 textbooks were turned over to the Cagayan de Oro City Government by the ICCP Group Foundation, Inc. (IGFI), a sister company of Cagayan de Oro's premier real estate developer, Pueblo de Oro Development Corporation (PODC). Rodolfo L. Menes, VP and General Manager of PODC and President of the ORO CHAMBER, presented the books to Mayor Constantino G. Jaraula in simple ceremonies during the flag raising in City Hall on May 11, 2009.

The container van full of books arrived on May 8, 2009 at the Oro Chamber Business Development Centre in Pueblo de Oro where they were sorted by 120 students who were on summer job with the City Government.

The City Government and the Department of Education will distribute the books to 31 identified public elementary and high schools located in the southwestern portions of Cagayan de Oro City.

The books were donated by Children International - Philippines Housing Foundation, Inc. (CI-PHFI), a nonprofit humanitarian organization based in Missouri, USA, through the initiative of IGFI with the cooperation of the Rotary Club of Uptown Cagayan de Oro and the ORO CHAMBER.

According to Resty Mondia, IGFI Community Relations Officer assigned to Pueblo, they are going to work with CI-PHFI to bring in more textbooks so that students in other public schools in the city could also benefit from the program.

wow! cdeo's water rafting is one of the best in the phils

i personally believe that CdeO's whitewater rafting really had great impact in Phil's tourism industry. Which inspired the other city/ies to do the same...POOR! it is in CdeO where tourism adventure industry had really started countrywide.. the rise in tourist influx is tantamount to the signficant increase in airline flights from CdeO to major Phil.destinations...

It's just to say that CdeO truly is one of the best Phil's tourism destinations.. a hotspot in its sense, i suppose.... :)

UK OKs travel to ‘east side of Mindanao’ (http://globalnation.inquirer.net/news/news/view/20090515-205249/UK-OKs-travel-to-east-side-of-Mindanao)

Close this MANILA, Philippines—The British Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) has amended its travel advisory to the Philippines by lifting travel restrictions to the “east side of Mindanao,” the Philippine embassy in London said in a statement released by the Department of Foreign Affairs.

The amended travel advisory, which took effect on May 12, was requested by the Philippine embassy in London and the DFA to their British counterparts here in Manila.

For more than two years, the British government advised its citizens not to travel to any part of Mindanao due to “terrorist and insurgent activity.”

The blanket travel restriction discouraged British travelers from traveling to Mindanao even if they wished to because it would have been impossible for them to obtain the required travel insurance.

Without the travel insurance, British travelers would have found it difficult to obtain funds in cases of hospitalization or accidents.

“The amendment to the UK’s travel restrictions to Mindanao is a positive development that now allows British citizens to obtain travel insurance for purposes of enjoying the surfs of Siargao, the idyllic sands of Pearl Farm in Davao City, and white-water rafting in Cagayan de Oro, among others,” the DFA said.

The department said the travels to Mindanao by British government officials during the past two years may have convinced the FCO that certain parts of Mindanao are relatively safe for British travelers to visit.

British tourists account for the biggest number of European tourists to the Philippines. In 2008, a total of 70,807 UK citizens visited the Philippines, representing a year-on-year increase of around 14 percent.

The Department of Tourism is working to attract more British tourists with the introduction of varied travel packages including scuba diving and bird-watching
