This is inside the Limketkai Mall. It now has plenty of tenants especially on the 2nd level than the last time i visited it some time april last year. The Robinson's happen to occupy a big space there.
The Limketkai Center is perhaps the best place to go to in CDO in my opinion. I really like the place personally. Well, i like going to sm too.

Arroyo urges coal plant expansion
By Lizanilla J. Amarga

VILLANUEVA -- President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo through Energy Secretary Raphael Lotilla on Monday invited the project proponents of the 210 megawatt Mindanao Coal-Fired Power Plant to consider expanding the capacity of its plant to meet future demand in Mindanao or to build entirely a new capacity in Southern Mindanao.

The leading power producer in Germany STEAG State Power Inc., which owns the US $305 million Mindanao Coal-Fired Power Plant in Villaneuva, Misamis Oriental, expressed willingness to expand its energy generation business here provided that conducive "legal framework" be put in place including revisiting the Electric Power Industry Reform Act.

Arroyo was supposed to lead the inauguration of the US $305 million coal plant and even attempted to land her aircraft twice but the weather condition was just too harsh.

During his speech, Lotilla said Arroyo asked him to relay the country's deep gratitude to the German investors and all those who contributed to the realization of the coal plant project.

He said this as he quoted the President as describing the entry of the coal plant as one of the crucial means in addressing the challenge of attaining stability in the supply of electricity in Mindanao.

"In fact, its full commercial operation during the last quarter of 2006 has contributed significantly to the reliability of power supply in Mindanao grid," he further quoted Arroyo.

Lotilla said the coal plant is welcome news considering that Mindanao grid's system reserve margin increased from a critical of 13.2 percent prior to the entry of Mindanao Coal to 24.6 percent in November 2006.

The required reserve margin for Mindanao is 21 percent.

Achievement

Lotilla said the power plant has likewise contributed about 16 percent of the power generation mix in Mindanao.

This resulted in less utilization of expensive oil-based plants in Mindanao from 26-32 percent to 13 percent while hydro accounts for 61 percent while other renewable energy sources such as geothermal accounts for 11 percent.

"This is an achievement that we are very proud of," he said.

Lotilla said the President looks forward to future expansion of the 210 megawatt Mindanao Coal-Fired Power Plant to meet the growing power demand in Mindanao, which is the "fastest" in the country at six to eight percent a year.

He then cited how the coal plant, being completed ahead of time and within budget, is "testament of the excellent engineering and cooperation" between Germans and Filipinos working hand in hand.

STEAG AG management board chairman Dr. Alfred Tacke said, "We are very interested in expanding our operations here in the Philippines."

The former head of Germany's Ministry of Economics said, "Politics and business have to adopt to the changing environment and that there should be "long-term security of investments and "stability of our projects."

STEAG State Power Inc. project realization head Claus-Peter Bell said they are prepared for the putting up of more energy infrastructures in the country but the EPIRA is not conducive to such a move.

He said this as he cited how it forbids the signing of more Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) energy projects in the country.

"We need to have safe agreements here," he said.

Bell disclosed that some other foreign investors are also interested in putting up more power plants but are hesitant because of the EPIRA.

"That is the opinion of some other independent power producers," he said, adding that it is not up to them to insist that the Philippine Government amend such a law to make it more attractive for power producer to pour in capital in the country.

Lotilla for his part said they will be asking Congress to revisit the EPIRA considering that the power demand is increasing.

"As there would be an impending power supply constraint should foreign power investors shy away from bankrolling a power plant," he said.

Bad weather forces Arroyo to divert to Cebu

By Lira Dalangin-Fernandez
INQUIRER.net
Last updated 04:41pm (Mla time) 01/08/2007

MANILA -- Bad weather forced President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo on Monday to scrap a visit to Misamis Oriental, where she was to have inaugurate a power plant and grace the province’s anniversary celebration, and divert to Cebu where she took a quick tour of the airport and convention center.

Colonel Romeo Prestoza, commander of the Presidential Security Group (PSG), told INQUIRER.net that, after presiding over a military command conference in Jolo, Sulu, Arroyo was scheduled to inaugurate the 210-megawatt Mindanao coal-fired power plant and attend the 77th anniversary of Misamis Oriental.

He said that they initially tried to proceed but were eventually advised that they would have to divert to Cebu, where they landed at around 2:15 p.m.

According to the Web site of the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) Monday, while there is no storm within the country, the Visayas and Mindanao would be experiencing scattered rainshowers and thunderstorms due to the intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ).

The ITCZ, according to a NASA article, is the region that circles the Earth, near the equator, where the trade winds of the Northern and Southern Hemispheres come together.

“Variations in the ITCZ’s location of the ITCZ drastically affects rainfall in many equatorial nations, resulting in the wet and dry seasons of the tropics,” the article says.

THE ECONOMY

Investments

The province generated a remarkable investment in 1997 when it recorded total investment of Php 16.522B. Infrastructure & services sector contributed 92% of the total with the bulk of the investment poured in Cagayan de Oro City. The investments were largely attributed to the development of mixed-used property development projects of Pueblo de Oro & Xavier Estates and other high-end subdivision projects.

New investments went down in the years that followed (1998- 2002) due to economic crisis in Asia, the devaluation of the currency but mainly by the political and Mindanao crisis. The investment figure picked up again in 1999 owing to the endorsement for funding of the Mindanao Container Terminal Port Project of the Phividec Industrial Estate by the Miyazawa Initiative amounting to PhP4.8B. Pryce Gases’ expansion project also contributed to this figure.
The growing affluence and increasing market influence of the city attracted the retail giants, Shoemart and Robinsons in 2002.

STEAG State Power Inc., which inked a Power Purchase Agreement with National Power Corporation on a Build-Operate-Transfer basis for the design, financing, construction and operation of a 210 MW coal-fired thermal power plant in the Municipality of Villanueva, Misamis Oriental, contributed a to 2003’s performance. The plant is expected to be operational in 2006.

With the establishment of Shoemart & Robinsons, other business enterprises in Manila made their way to establish branches/outlets in city. This contributed to the 43.66% trading sector in 2004 total investment. The initial construction of KORESCO Hotel in Pueblo de Oro also contributed to the total investment in 2004.

Exports. Over the years, exports in Misamis Oriental relied largely on traditional products, the major ones include: canned pineapple, sintered ore, crude coco oil, finished lumber/wood products, activated carbon, fatty alcohol, refined glycerine, dessicated coconut and coco shell charcoal. However, the year 2001 welcomed the entry of a new export product, milk powder, which ranked 5th in 2001 replacing two of the traditional export commodities - refined glycerine and coco milk powder. But canned pineapple, fatty alcohol and sintered ore remained consistently on top of the export commodities. (Please refer to annex 9 for the top 10 export commodities for the past five (5) years).

Exports generated from 1997 to 2001 showed an erratic trend brought about by the decrease in prices of these traditional export products, especially those commodities, which are directly or indirectly affected by the changes in price of the international market.

Misamis Oriental accounts for more than 50% of the total exports of Region X.

Major Imports. The province’s top 10 imports are minerals, hot rolled steel sheet, tinplates, chemicals, fertilizer, live animals, food stuff, logs, cartoon making materials and forest products. Majority of these commodities are used by industries in the manufacturing, repair & services and the agriculture sector.
The major exporting countries are Brazil, Japan, Australia, Canada, USA and among others.

Major Industries. Medium to large industries operate in Misamis Oriental. Major ones include Philippine Sinter Corporation, Pilipinas Kao and the food giants Del Monte Philippines, Inc. (DMPI), Nestle Philippines, Universal Robina Corporation among others. Other major manufacturing industries include coco-based companies (PACCO, Indo-Phil Oil Mills, Fiesta Brands, Cag. De Oro Oil Company, Limketkai Sons Milling Co.); industrial gases (Pryce Gases and Phil Southern Industrial Gases); wood-based (CATIMCO Group, Vicmar,Top Forest) and other agri-based companies.

The 2003 Survey of Business Establishments conducted by the Department of Trade and Industry revealed a total of 16,597 firms registered with the 24 Municipal Treasurers and 2 City Treasurer Offices in the province.

The 2004 Misamis Oriental Business Name Registration is recorded at 2,537.

Industrial Estate Development. The 80-hectare Alwana Business Park located in Barangay Cugman, Cagayan de Oro City, started in 1981 as the site of wood working factories. Ten years later, the management transformed the rest of the site into an industrial and residential area with a neat zoning system. Forty (40) hectares are reserved for industries, 20 hectares for its high-end subdivision, Alwana Village, ten (10) for commercial establishments and 26 for parks and recreation. Presently, a sports & recreation center is in full operation.

The biggest industrial estate in the country is found in Misamis Oriental. The 3,000-hectare PHIVIDEC Industrial Estate-Misamis Oriental (PIEMO) covers the municipalities of Tagoloan and Villanueva.

The first and biggest locator is the Philippine Sinter Corporation (PSC) which is a subsidiary of Kawasaki Steel of Japan. PSC’s sintered ore is one of the top export commodities of the province. There are 33 locators in the estate, of which, 27 are into manufacturing and 6 are service-related firms. Soon to be established in the estate is the Limketkai Food Manufacturing Corporation, San Miguel Corporation and TLC Beatrice Foods, a food processing facility.

The recently inaugurated Mindanao Container Terminal Port (MCTP) which is also located inside the Phividec Industrial Estate was targeted to operate in January 2004. MCTP will have a capacity of 270,000 TEU/year and a deep harbor for 12 meters draft panamax vessels. The port will have a back-up area for state-of-the-art container yard, warehouses and storage facilities. This port will then addresses the traffic congestion of the existing Cagayan de Oro Port and the medium term need of PHIVIDEC itself.

The First Cagayan de Oro Business Park, a project of MINERGY Systems Inc. and All Asia Capital, also involves the development of a 200-hectare area within the PHIVIDEC Industrial Estate. The implementation of the project will be undertaken in three (3) phases.Another business parks are being programmed to be developed in the province is the Laguindingan Industrial Park which will be located just beside the proposed Laguindingan International Airport.

Plus the $1 Billion Harbin Ship-building facility in MisOr. Do you have any articles that describe the project?

Misor progress boon to Oro’s economy, Mayor Emano says
by Sandra B. Tadeo/City Information Office
Date Published: 2007-01-09
The economic progress in the municipalities of Misamis Oriental will also boost the already booming economy of Cagayan de Oro.

City Mayor Vicente Y. Emano stressed this point as he witnessed yesterday the inauguration of the US$305 Mindanao Coal-Fired Power Plant in Villanueva, Misamis Oriental. Mayor Emano said that the proximity of Villanueva and other municipalities in the province to Cagayan de Oro makes the city as the capital for the financial transactions that will be made by investors in nearby towns and municipalities. The city mayor also expressed optimism that the presence of the 210 megawatt Mindanao Coal-Fired Power Plant will boost economic progress not only in Cagayan de Oro and nearby Misamis Oriental province but the entire island of Mindanao as well. Mayor Emano reiterated that its high time for all Mindanaoans to unite and work together to achieve peace and economic progress in the island of Mindanao. “We can no longer afford to be parochial in our intentions of spurring economic progress but instead work together to ensure progress for the whole island of Mindanao,” the city chief executive pointed out. Mayor Emano said that whatever progress that takes place in any local government unit in the island is not only good for the people in that particular place but will also do well for the entire island. Mayor Emano hoped that with the presence of the German STEAG AG-owned Mindanao Coal-Fired Power Plant, more foreign investors will be lured to pour in investment capital in this part of Mindanao.

Coal plant management assures cheaper rates
By Lizanilla J. Amarga

THE project proponents of the US$305-million Mindanao Coal-Fired Power Plant revealed that they are now studying how they can supply directly and at a cheaper rate two huge international firms invited in by Cagayan de Oro City Mayor Vicente Emano.

The Provincial Board of Misamis Oriental Tuesday approved a resolution extending their "sincerest felicitation and thanks" to STEAG State Power Inc. for the "successful inauguration and commissioning" of the coal plant at Phividec Industrial Estate, Villanueva, Misamis Oriental.

This particularly as the "construction and operation" of the coal plant was "completed in record time, a boost to the power supply of the entire island of Mindanao."

In a press conference, STEAG State Power Inc. project realization and power plant head Claus-Peter Bell said he has recently met with Emano and discussed how the coal plant could help out in supplying directly and at a cheaper rate to two huge international firms.

This include the possible coming in of the reputedly-third largest steel producer in the world Pohang Iron and Steel Company (POSCO) and Hanjin Shipping, a member of Korea's huge Hanjin group whose bulk operations consist of liners, trampers, and specialized services for shipping both dry cargo such as coal and liquid cargo such as crude oil.

Emano earlier announced that POSCO has expressed interest to invest US$750 million to put up a smelting plant while Hanjin Shipping wants to establish a shipping yard.

Bell said they are still considering several options on how they could go about serving POSCO and Hanjin Shipping should the two international firms decide to relocate as their neighbors at the Phivedec Industrial Estate, Villanueva, Misamis oriental.

He said this particularly as they have to make sure that their Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with the National Power Corporation (Napocor) would not be violated.

Bell said their PPA with Napocor stipulates that the coal plant will supply the Mindanao Power Grid with 200 megawatts.

He said that as their power plant is capable of producing 210 megawatts there would be an excess of 10 megawatts, which they could supply to other firms.

"We can sell this 10 megawatts surplus to any other interested concessionaires," he told reporters.

Bell said Emano has also asked them to expand their coal-fired power plant should more power supply be needed by either POSCO or Hanjin Shipping.

He said they are willing to make such an expansion as soon as they can personally talk and negotiate with the representatives of the two international firms.

Meanwhile, Board Member Norris Babiera Tuesday authored the resolution "conveying" their sincerest felicitation and thanks to STEAG State Power, Inc. for completing the coal plant on time.

He said the plant will "stabilize the power supply that will contribute to the development of Misamis Oriental, the Northern Mindanao area, and the entire Island of Mindanao."

Babiera said the construction of the coal plant is the "biggest in terms of investment in Mindanao" by STEAG AG.

This jointly with other international and local banking and financing institutions which is a "manifestation of the trust and confidence of foreign investors in the Province of Misamis Oriental as well as in the country as an investment haven."

"The vast expertise and competence of STEAG AG of Germany in coal fired power plant generation and operation will guarantee a stable energy necessary to the development of industries in the Province and the entire Mindanao Island," he said. The resolution was unanimously approved.

EIGHTEEN gold albums, countless popular hits, 46-year career, and The Lettermen are back and still going strong!

Original member Tony Butala, and new members Donovan Tea, and Mark Preston are back in the entertainment industry as they embark on another worldwide tour, which includes Philippines, as their pit stop for the next few weeks.

Although the group has made a series of member changes, but that didn't stop them from making countless hits and tours around the world with endless concerts. Finally, the trio will have the chance to step foot here at the City of Golden Friendship, and will serenade our fellow Kagay-anons.

The Lettermen will perform on January 16, at the Limketkai Mall Atrium. The concert will start at 8 pm. Tickets are available at La roma Café, Mallberry Suites, Music Vision, Ma-An Video and Sounds, Limketkai Customer Service Area, and Sandy 101.5 radio station.

Energy chief cites Arroyo pledge for Mindanao power

VILLANUEVA, Misamis Oriental -- Energy Secretary Raphael Lotilla led the inauguration of the multimillion-dollar, 210-megawatt coal-fired Mindanao power plant located in Villanueva, Misamis Oriental.

Lotilla represented President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, who was originally scheduled to be the guest of honor and speaker at the inaugural rites but failed to attend due to inclement weather.

"The President wants to say that Mindanao remains a priority for her. And that we are here to ensure that Mindanao is reliable and affordable for a power plant," Lotilla said.

According to Lotilla, the Presidential helicopter bearing the Chief Executive and her group had first attempted to land at Cagayan de Oro's Lumbia Airport after coming from Jolo, Sulu but failed because of zero visibility.

The aircraft diverted to Cebu where it refueled before returning and trying to land twice at Cagayan de Oro, but the attempts remained futile, Lotilla said.

In his remarks, Lotilla said the President acknowledged the trust and confidence of the Steag State Power Inc. for their investment in Mindanao's coal plant.

She also extended her gratitude to the local government officials for their support in the establishment of the power plant in the Mindanao region.

Lotilla sounded the gong for the symbolical opening of the power plant, which will complement the Ma. Cristina Waterfalls power plant in nearby Iligan City.

The 210-MW coal-fired power plant was established by the German-owned Stead State Power Inc.

Steag is Germany's fifth largest power producer with a combined installed capacity of about 9,000 megawatts including its foreign power plants located in Turkey and Colombia.

The Mindanao power plant secures for the island an additional capacity of up to 210 megawatts and is capable of supplying 15 percent of the island's power requirement.

Established at a cost of $305 million, the project is considered as one of Germany's big-ticket investments in the Philippines and is providing a highly positive business outlook not only for Mindanao but the entire country.

Microtel Inns & Suites (Pilipinas), Inc. targets to open up a bed and breakfast hotel accommodation in each province across the Philippines, in the next 10 years.

"We hope to put up a Microtel Hotel or Resort in every province in the Philippines as our long term goal, as long as we can find prospective partners," said Dean Y. Cid, a resident manager of the newly opened Microtel Resort in Boracay.

By the end of 2007, the company is targeting to increase its network to eight Microtel-managed small hotel or resort around the country.

Cid said the Philippines is potential for the bed and breakfast accommodation concept, with its tourist attraction sites that do not have good hotel or resort facilities.

The Philippines has 79 provinces as of September 2006 statistics. Cid said the company is active in touching base with every province in the country to look for prospective partners or investors.

There are two partnership deals currently being offered by the company. First, is through a 100 percent franchise arrangement, or the investor will have to invest in the development of a hotel property, while Microtel will have to manage the hotel or resort. Second, is a joint investment package in building the facility between the investor and Microtel.

Microtel's sister company, Paramount Property Management specializes in property management though it also covers the full range of expertise in all areas of the hospitality industry, including hotel management, food & beverage operations and restaurant franchising.

Microtel is the hospitality arm of the Phinma Group. It was established in 1997, incorporated in the state of New York, USA as private company.

Microtel is the brand management company, while Paramount is the property management firm both almost have the same set of stockholders.

Earlier, tourism prime mover Sammy Lim urged investors across the Philippines, especially Cebu and its neighboring provinces to start on investing accommodation facility for visitors or tourists via bed and breakfast accommodation concept.

Microtel on the other hand, has responded this call through this active nationwide expansion plan, opening bed and breakfast accommodation facility in each province in the country, bringing in its internationally-known brand for quality hotel services.

Currently, Microtel is present in Baguio City, Tarlac, Batangas, Cavite and Boracay.

Towards the end of this year, a Microtel Resort will be opened in Cebu at Punta Engaño, on Mactan Island. In October a Microtel Hotel in Davao will also be opened.

As part of its short term plan, Microtel will open in Cagayan de Oro City, Bicol, Bohol, and General Santos City in Mindanao.

I can still remember putting cotton balls in my ears to get rid of the noise when we have just moved in. But i got used to it now. In Pueblo de Oro area, the noise has minimal effect since the plane's magnitude is quite already high by the time it passes by w/c.

Regarding the number of flights per day.
Philippine Airlines has 3
Cebu Pacific currently has 4(til january 20 i guess before they restore the normal 3 flights/day)

Mindanao Super Region info caravan kicks off tomorrow
by Rubelyn B. Yap/City Information Office
Date Published: 2007-01-10
The Mindanao Super Region information caravan will hold the Northern Mindanao leg of a series of regional public consultations here in Cagayan de Oro tomorrow, January 11, from 9:00 a.m. onwards at the Mindanao Polytechnic State College.

This after Secretary Ricardo Saludo of the Office of Political Coalition Affairs under the Office of the President asked assistance from City Mayor Vicente Y. Emano for the information caravan dubbed as “Building the New Philippines”. In his letter to Mayor Emano, Sec. Saludo explained that the caravan is a speaking tour on President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo’s policy and economic achievements which include the Super Region Program. Considering the economic growth and development that will be brought to the city as well as to the island of Mindanao through the creation of the Mindanao Super Region, Mayor Emano is calling on all the Cagayanons to support the caravan by attending tomorrow’s public consultation. Mayor Emano particularly asked the barangay chief executives in the 80 barangays, members of the non-government organizations, private organizations, and all the other sectors in the community to actively participate in tomorrow’s consultation. The forum will be headed by Sec. Saludo and will discuss various issues concerning the government. Mayor Emano expressed his full support to the new economic concept as a possible fulfillment of the promise that Mindanao has long been dreaming of. The city mayor believed that with the Super Region concept of making Mindanao into a whole region, it will be able to achieve unprecedented economic growth for the island and the country. Mayor Emano explained that Mindanao’s position as the Philippine’s food basket contributing 40% of the country’s food requirement and 30% of the national food trade will be further harnessed with major infrastructure support that will be brought in with the creation of the Super Region. The Super Region strategy is seen as the key in ensuring that despite the pervading issues and challenges, efforts to address the island’s development imperatives are accelerated with a total budget of P29.1 billion for the next three years. Included in the Super Region priority projects that Cagayan de Oro stands to benefit are the Cagayan de Oro Port rehabilitation which costs P181 million that is set to be finished this year and the long over-due Laguindingan International Airport which costs P5,386 million which is projected to be finished in 2011. Major projects in 15 other areas in Mindanao are included in the priority projects of the new concept.

Memories of the Old Hometown

By: Gwendolyn Ramos Garcia

Home is that magical place where I feel that I belong. It is where my forbears are buried, and where my mother and most of my family, relatives and close friends still live. It is that special place where even if I leave its shores, I will still feel welcome when I come back no matter how long I have been away.

Most people leave home when they go off to college, or after graduation, in search of a job, or when one marries somebody from another town/city or country. But what exactly is “home”?

Home is that magical place where I feel that I belong. It is where my forbears are buried, and where my mother and most of my family, relatives and close friends still live. It is that special place where even if I leave its shores, I will still feel welcome when I come back no matter how long I have been away.

And for me, that magical, special place is no other than Cagayan de Oro City ! My city Cagayan de Oro did not acquire that moniker for nothing. There is a fable attached to the name.

Cagayan de Oro literally means “city of gold”. The gold was rumored to be in the underwater cave by the river along the original church which is now the St. Augustine’s Cathedral. Whether gold has really been found is subject to conjecture but anyone who has ever been to the city always leaves it with golden memories of the wonderful people that inhabit the place.

A friend who works at the World Bank in Washington, D.C., Marylou Gomez, confided to me that her brief 10 month stay in Cagayan, teaching a Grade V class at XU’s grade school was among the happiest times of her life.

Three other friends, high school classmates of mine at Lourdes College (LC) – Vicky Enriquez Agaab, Elizabeth Domingo-Tan and Rosemarie Quiepo-Flores, recently made a nostalgic trip there during a class reunion and they happily retraced the steps of their girlhood – walking to the Cathedral from the LC dorm, then back to Divisoria & to XU’s Immaculate Conception Chapel. They even went to Cogon market by themselves, accompanied by Elizabeth’s doting husband, in search of tira-tira and binaki. They hope to go back again for our class’ 50th reunion.

Its People

Years ago, almost everybody in town was related, either by blood or by marriage. They belonged to the big clans of Neri, Chaves, Roa, Velez, Abejuela, Gabor, Fernandez, etc. New people came in when scions of these original families who had studied in Manila met, then ended up marrying young men from other parts of the country or when men in government service got assigned to Cagayan de Oro and married local belles.

The city then was also a popular destination for rich students from Manila, Bacolod, Cebu & other towns because Ateneo de Cagayan (now Xavier University) had a reputation for its firm discipline and good education. Several of these young men married into local families so you have family names now in Cagayan de Oro like de la Fuente, Falcon, Ferrer, Arguelles, etc. Other settlers and transplants came from Bohol (Borja, Luminarias, Enerio, Mosqueda, Balaba), Cebu (Canoy, Dongallo, Sestoso), Ilocos (Soriano, Garcia, Cabading), Gingoog (Lugod, Fernandez), Bukidnon (Fortich), Antique (Xavier, Noble), Ozamiz (Tamparong, Gorospe), Ormoc (Muñoz), Capiz (Torres, Quimpo), Marikina (Cruz), Camiguin (Adaza, Bollozos, Paderanga, Quiblat, Along, Dugenio, Salcedo, Magto, etc.) . Still others were employees of firms like Tabacalera, Soriano, San Miguel and Menzi [and were mostly of Spanish descent like Messrs. Puyo, Aguirre, Rodriguez, Larrabaster] or those assigned in the Army or PC Camps (Limena, Venadas, Sontillano, Saniel, Elloso, Clavano, etc.) or government offices like the Bureau of Lands, Agriculture, etc. (Messrs. Fernando TorresCastillo were young graduates [UP Los Banos] when they first came to the city and ended up marrying into local families; and government doctors (Drs. Zamora, Almonte, Montenegro, Macaranas, Dayrit, Mejia, etc.) or Del Monte executives/employees (Frias, Tugot, Balbuena, Pelaez, Mejia, etc.). and

The Spanish American War and WW II also saw the influx of G.I.’s who chose to stay because they had married local belles – like John Charles Chaloner (direct descendants of whom count the Gaanes , Buhays & Casiños) and George Willkom (from that single American from Ohio descended about 500 Willkoms), Larsen (Cepedas) , Paagen (Saberolas).

As the world beckoned, some of the native-born Cagay-anons ventured to other climes in search of adventure and “outsiders”or “newcomers” from other parts of the country came in to take their place when the city became one of the major regional centers of the Philippines. As a result of said regionalization more and more trekked to the city to man banks, regional offices and to establish businesses. The city had so welcomed them with open arms that when it was time to transfer to other branches, many of these managers and heads of offices chose to quit their jobs rather than relocate elsewhere. That’s how much they loved and felt “at home” in their newly adopted city.

Thus now, “Cagayanons” are categorized as the native born, those who married into local families, the transplanted merchants, businessmen and professionals who plied their trade here or practiced their professions in their new-found city and the children born into families who emigrated to the city before or during the war or during the business or regionalization boom in the 80’s.

The Old Town

Downtown CDO with Ysalina bridge

When I was growing up, the town had few cars. The few taxicabs in town under the “Ang Sidlak” name was owned/operated by Rodrigo Lim. Jeepneys plied the Pier & Patag routes and “tartanillas” were very much in vogue. But most people walked to school or to their jobs. Life was so slow and people did not have to rush. It seemed that we could walk to most places: to market, to church, to the shopping areas which then was centered mostly in Divisoria, Del Mar (now Don Apolinar Velez) & Real (Gen. Nicolas Capistrano) streets.

People rode only when they had to catch the boat at the Macabalan Pier, or the plane at Lumbia airport. I remember walking to school from our house in Del Mar Street. I had to pass by the old bowling alley owned by the Ematas, the old China Restaurant (Ongs) & farther ahead, the Yee’s Restaurant which is still there, Bina Tan Grocery, Our Store, one of the very first educational stores run by the Mosqueda couple, the Velez AlmacenDodo & Chunching Velez, which carried silverware and glassware from Oceanic and other beautiful houseware & décor, another store with nice items owned by Fred Lee, Society Store (owned by the Sisons nee Puring Emata), which sold Gregg shoes, the finest clothing materials and the latest items from Manila, past Cagayan Grocery before I could reach Lourdes College. owned by the couple

It was a leisurely walk past these stores brimming with items that to a young girl’s eyes were just so delightful. It was fun to window-shop each day on my way to school. Lourdes College was just about 2 blocks away from the St. Augustine’s Cathedral. The street then was lined with tall acacia trees that swayed from the breeze coming in from the river nearby and across the church was the major park in town, Gaston Park. Lest anyone forget, Gaston Park undertook a major facelift thru the efforts of the late Mayor Justiniano Borja who put in the lovely fountain, well-lit at night so that people could stroll and frolic in the park on warm, balmy nights. Said park is just one of his many enduring legacies to the city.

Its Places of Worship

http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g283/boju4289/cathedral.jpg
Gaston Park and San Agustin Cathedral

My understanding is that St. Augustine’s Cathedral was built by Engr. Diego Imperio or under his supervision. I think it is a beautiful edifice – with perfect symmetry, beautiful stained glass windows and very nice chandeliers. When the church underwent a facelift years ago, I learned that some of the stained-glass panels were taken out and replaced by wrought-iron, probably, to let fresh air in. I personally think that those stained-glass pieces should be put back into the church. (Editor’s Note: The stained glass were restored years back).

Nazareno Church along busy Lapasan was built thru the efforts of the Floirendos and had as its parish priest for many, many years, Fr. Cicero Cebrero, S.J. The church still stands on the same spot, now surrounded by towering Gaisano stores. Another popular chapel was the Perpetual Help Chapel (now Fatima Chapel) along Del Mar St. maintained by St. Paul sisters who run one of the few stores in town that sell religious articles. Lately it has been the chosen venue of some weddings.

And in densely populated Nazareth district is the San Antonio de Padua Church that also underwent a major makeover, courtesy of Capt. Luciano Firmacion who spent for its entire renovation, his legacy to the residents of Nazareth. The old Aglipayan church was then along Del Mar St., on property donated by Nemesito Chavez. It has since moved to the back of its present site. Acacia trees also used to line the entire stretch of Del Mar. They were probably torn down when the sidewalks were built. I wonder if there could have been a way to save those majestic trees, now forever gone.

Recreational facilities

There were only 3 bowling alleys in town – the one along Luzon St.. (now J.R. Borja St.) operated by the Firmacions, the Emata-owned one on Del Mar St. (now Bank of PI) and the 2-lane one run by the Garcias somewhere near where Gaisano is.

On top of the Firmacion’s bowling lane was the night club “Monte Carlo” and the other nightspot across the other end of town, just after Puntod, was the “Taza De Oro”, owned by Feodor and Nene Emata. That site, a lovely brick building, is now the YMCA.

Another night club was the “El Retiro”. Young people took their dates to the following snack places - the “Casino” of Tito Ating Gabor, the only place in town where you could get Magnolia ice cream; the old & original La Playa, along the riverbank (where the City Social Hall now stands) owned by Pete Tan, known for the best burger in town; Hernando’s Hideaway owned by Tita Trining Pineda, named after her husband, Judge Hernando Pineda, that daily churned out fresh milk ice-cream and yummy homemade barquillos; Ferns Restaurant in Divisoria, and the only steakhouse in town, the Sirloin & Saddle owned by Phil and Nena Roa Balan.

Bakeries/OtherPopular Stores

For our bakery needs, everyone went to either Ah Fat, Shanghai or Dalisay Bakeries. And who can forget the original hot pan de sal available at a small bakery at the pier. Students of Lourdes College congregated at the “Good Morning Store” (below Lola Charing Fabella’s house) for their delicious & salty “kiamoy” & shrimp crackers while the XU boys had “Macmang’s Store” where students went for snacks.

Its Culinary Delights

My mother used to say that one way of sizing up a person is by knowing about the kind of food he/she enjoys since food is part and parcel of living well. It wasn’t until I left home that I realized that we have so many culinary delights, some of them peculiar only to Cagay-anons - like the much-touted “bihod” coming from that special fish known as “pigok”.

There’s the “binaki” that most people in the Philippines don’t even have an inkling of. Then there’s the fresh milk puto from the Soriano kitchen, the yemas, brazo de mercedes, sans rival and boat tarts that only Tita Gely Dayrit can make.

There’s also the Elloso’s banana candies and the late Tita Flor Jaldon’s special coconut candies (not macaroons). From my mother’s kitchen, I learned to make “keseo” (white cheese), “budin” (bread pudding), “jalea” (pure mango jam) and fresh milk ice-cream churned from a hand-cranked ice cream maker or “garapinera”.

Who can forget the late Tita Luz Macaranas’ special ensaimadas, fresh lumpia and “masa podrida”, the Castanos’ “empanadas”, Lola Iling Fernandez’s pastillas de leche (also made from fresh carabao’s milk) and the “manticao” and “crema de fruta” recipes of the Neri sisters (Tita Perla and Tita Flor). Almost every family had “tsokolate” at breakfast & dinnertime made from their own backyard cacao trees.

What about the “kayam”? I remember that my mother had a “suki” who would deliver cooked or boiled “kayam” to the house. I haven’t seen kayam for a long, long time now. And who can ever forget the “ginamos” made from “hipon” or little fish that come only once a year, usually the first day of February.

I wonder if other places in the country have as many delicacies such as the ones that Cagayan can boast of (except for Pampanga and Bacolod, of course).

Life in the Slow Lane

My recollection about growing up in a small town is mostly about simple pleasures – walking to school, going to Patag golf course on Sundays with my parents along with other golfers and their families, to the beach on weekends either in Opol (with the Rabes and their Canoy relatives) or in Baloy (the original Neri enclave) with the Dayrits, Nobles and Eparwas.

It was lazy summers spent in the company of visiting Manila cousins (the Pelaezes) who spent almost every summer vacation in Cagayan. Other happy memories were the joyrides with cousins Babe, Sonny, Inday, Gangging, Sweetpea and Charito Fortich, Gigi and Tetel Borja, Annabel Montalvan, and Jing, Lani and Beth Eparwa, and my brother, Boy.

We would go all over town, to the pier to buy hot “pan de sal” then end up at Lumbia to gaze at the stars and the city below, all the while singing Mitch Miller sing-a-long songs.

All of these happened a long time ago but the memories live on and linger, like the notes of an old forgotten tune. Growing up in Cagayan meant being around a lot of relatives and other people whom you knew your entire life; where “everybody knew your name”, to borrow a phrase from Cheers. Although it was akin to living in a fishbowl, I wouldn’t trade it for anything else. These happy, cherished memories will carry me through life whatever may come my way.

btw, CDO guys, i have an insider news from the Robinsons. Robinsons land is now preselling lots for their 2nd subdivision in the city called Richmond hills. Nice ni kay this is located on a ridge property at Camaman-an owned by Florendos i guess..(not so sure about the owner, it's a joint venture).

Kini na ang interesting, they are preselling just the Phase 1 of the subdivision, the one w/c is not on a ridge part of the property. Ang Phase2, w/c is on the ridge part, idle pa. Kay ngano? Robinsons kuno is considering the possibility of building a hotel on the ridge area(murag Pryce). No further details were disclosed by an engineer sa RLI. Generic ra kaayo.

Naa client nga willing mu palit ug home lot sa may ridge part pero wa sya taga-i kay wala pa daw advice ang head office nga i presell na gihapon ang Phase 2.

wala lang... :)

These happy, cherished memories will carry me through life whatever may come my way.

ohno..my google earth isnt working again! STFU!

btw, CDO guys, i have an insider news from the Robinsons.

Dongallos. Bai... Not the Floirendos... They also own the mansion at the hilltop... I heard that the mansion is already for commercial use... They have functions rooms for parties, etc...

Tsada!CAGAYAN DE ORO!
A city in Boom, Blossom and Bloom Thread IX

http://i119.photobucket.com/albums/o157/francisxavier9501/CDOBanner2.jpg
KNOWN AS THE CITY OF GOLDEN FRIENDSHIP, Cagayan de Oro has been cited by two Philippine leading think tanks for the vast potentials it holds for investors and businessmen who manage to see beyond the fabled warmth and hospitality of its residents.

Roberto de Vera, author and regional studies director of the University of Asia and the Pacific (UA&P),cited Cagayan de Oro as the best positioned for future growth and investments among 23 leading urban regional cities of the Philippines.

Investment Center

http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g283/boju4289/ABIelsalvador.jpg

In his 2000 paper "Investing in Regional Cities: the Next Big Thing," de Vera describes how Cagayan de Oro is not only the gateway to Northern Mindanao region, but is its regional shopping center as well.

Although it ranked only 16th among the 23 cities in the study in Gross City Domestic Product (GCDP) with P4.93 billion, it led all others in investments with P16.5 billion. It was also the only city in Mindanao among the top five cited by the study in investments posted with the Board of Investments (BOI) in 1999.

Focused Vision
Cagayan de Oro was also cited in a 2000 study by the Washington Sycip Policy Forum -- a think tank of the Asian Institute of Management -- because of its "focused vision for its economic future."

The study said Cagayan de Oro's competitiveness was enhanced by its strong economic ties such as with the Northern and Central Visayas regions, Cagayan de Oro-Iligan Corridor (CIC), and the Brunei Darussalam-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines East ASEAN Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA).

Although other regional centers like Davao were also progressive, its average household income from 1994 to 1997 dropped 10%, while those of Cagayan de Oro and General Santos increased.

Infrastructure Support

http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g283/boju4289/mindanaocoal.jpg

Another unique feature of Cagayan de Oro is the way by which its strong real estate property development is balanced by inter-regional infrastructure development such as the Laguindingan international standard airport, Mindanao International Container Port, Tubod-Tangub bridge and widening of its Iligan-Cagayan de Oro-Bukidnon Road (ICBR), the road artery which links it to key satellite areas.

With over 100 subdivisions containing 80,000 lots covering over 1,000 hectares and counting, the real estate boom in the city is likewise balanced by intercity infrastructure such as the planned construction of three additional bridges across the Cagayan river, Licoan flyover and the East and West coast public utility terminals aimed at loosening the city's tightening gridlock.

Wide Consumer Base

Which is just as well, since although Cagayan de Oro city itself only has half a million residents, it serves a consumer base of well over three million people covering the five provinces (Bukidnon, Camiguin, Lanao del Norte, Misamis Occidental and Misamis Occidental) and six cities (Cagayan de Oro, Gingoog, Iligan, Oroquieta, Ozamiz, and Tangub) of Region 10 (Northern Mindanao) as its regional shopping center.

Already, SM City and rival Big R Super Center have set up mixed-use shopping malls to rival Gaisano's three malls and the local titans Ororama and Limketkai which all boast of department stores, concessionaires, national food chains and cinemas equal if not better than similar stores in other booming regional centers like Cebu, Bacolod and Davao.

Industrial Parks

Besides retailers, light and medium industries are also finding Cagayan de Oro and its satellite areas an ideal home with its mix of affordable industrial parks, reliable and affordably priced utilities, and central location linked to the rest of the country and the ASEAN region with seamless transportation and communications.

The 3,000-hectare PHIVIDEC Industrial Estate-Misamis Orientalis the country's largest, with the 200-hectare First Cagayan de Oro Business Park and the 80-hectare Alwana Business Park now online. Three others are in the pipeline: Laguindingan Industrial Park, El Salvador Economic Zone, and Gingoog Special Economic Zone.

Already, 19 light and medium industries are operating in Cagayan de Oro, the largest of which are Del Monte Philippines, Inc. and Nestlé Philippines, Inc.'sASEAN regional manufacturing center for coffee and milk powder. Another 30 or so industries are operating in the Phividec Industrial Estate-Misamis Oriental.

Exports Boom In large part due to this mix of industrial infrastructure and locational advantages, exports topped the US$200-million mark in 2001 as downstream industries, taking advantage of the city's proximity to the agriculture powerhouse Bukidnon, churned out an increasingly diverse array of products to complement the region's predominantly coconut-and-pineapple export base.

Telecom

Another reason for the continued increase in exports and gross city domestic product are Cagayan de Oro's recent and planned transportation and communications projects through which the lifeblood of this regional dynamo flows. Already served by five telephone local exchange centers (LECs), and four mobile phone companies, the present 65,000 land lines are set to double by another 50,000 in the next two years, further boosting teledensity beyond 10 phones per 100 persons. Two paging networks and nine Internet service providers provide pinpoint local and global reach.

Improved Services

On top of this, 122 banks and 203 public and private schools provide support services, accounting for over half the region's total for both categories. Health services are equally impressive: Eleven public and private hospitals provide over 1,500 beds -- half the total in Region 10.

These are further backed by some 49 barangay health centers, 66 family planning clinics, and over 200 medical and dental clinics. Medical facilities include world-class institutions like the Northern Mindanao Heart Center and Mindanao Eye Center.

Multicultural Peace

Tourism is another sunrise industry. Regional and national convention-goers find irresistible the city's close proximity of hotels and accommodations, wide variety of easily accessible exotic tourism destinations and amenities including an 18-hole world class golf course and a country club.

Not the least, the leisure industry appears to be crossing even political and ideological lines as Cagayan de Oro has been relatively spared the rash of violence which has rocked Mindanao's urban centers as of late. Although its peace and order situation is by no means impeccable, still it has been spared the wholesale bombings and killings many have come to associate with Mindanao.

The most logical explanation for this is multicultural harmony: Despite the diversity of beliefs and ideological convictions, residents share the same admiration and affection for the City of Golden Friendship, the city that has become a home even to migrants and ever-increasing number of visitors over the years.

Integrated TV Patrol N. Mindanao launched Monday

ABS-CBN Cagayan de Oro and Iligan News Groups mark a milestone Monday with the formal launching of the integrated TV Patrol-Northern Mindanao at the ABS-CBN Cagayan de Oro Complex in Barangay Bulua.

The occasion marks the simultaneous airing of ABS-CBN Northern Mindanao's flagship news program in Cagayan de Oro and Iligan stations every Monday to Friday at 6 to 6:30 p.m.

The merger of the two news bureaus will lead to the strengthened news coverage in the cities of Cagayan de Oro and Iligan as well as the provinces of Misamis Oriental, Misamis Occidental, Lanao del Norte, Lanao del Sur, Bukidnon and Camiguin and some parts of Zamboanga del Norte and Zambonga del Sur.

The integrated TV Patrol-Northern Mindanao or TVPNM will now be anchored by the tandem of veteran journalists Alden Bacal and Conchita May Tanate.

CDO reporters Lorenzo Luzon, Shiela Joy Labrador, Maricel Butardo together with Iligan Senior Reporter Ronnie Enderes and Reporter Roxanne Arevalo join forces to deliver the latest events and happenings with the Butuan News group continuing to contribute stories from the Caraga Region.

Providing leadership and supervision to TVPNM are Area Manager Alexander T. Martinez, News Chief Ad Roel Alcober and Desk Mylene Sison.

Expected to grace this significant gathering are ABS-CBN Regional Netwrok Group Vice President Rolando Valdueza, Mindanao Cluster Head Louis Benedict Bennett, RNG News head Stanley Palisada, chief executives of local government units, heads of government and private agencies, and representatives from the media, civil, and business sectors.

With the integration program, the ABS-CBN Northern Mindanao News and Current Affairs Group hopes to deliver faster and more exclusive reportage of daily and breaking news not only to the people of Northern Mindanao but also to the rest of the country and the world in general, in the continued service of the Filipino people. Steag can expand Mindanao operation - Lotilla
01/14/2007 | 08:35 PM

The government may allow German power producer STEAG State Power Inc. to expand its coal plant operation in Mindanao despite prohibitions of the power reform law.

Energy Secretary Raphael P.M. Lotilla said Congress may provide the legal framework for the National Power Corp. to enter into new contracts with independent power producers like Steag.

The move would allow private power firms to expand capacity in Mindanao despite a ban on Napocor against entering into new power supply agreements.

Steag, which operates a 210-megawatt coal plant in Misamis Oriental, wants to expand the facility by 100 to 150 mw and sell electricity to Napocor.

A provision in the Electric Power Industry Reform Act of 2001, however, states that Napocor may generate and sell electricity only "from undisposed generating assets and power contracts of the Power Sector Assets and Liabilities Management Corp. and shall not incur any new obligations to purchase power through bilateral contracts with generation companies or other suppliers."

Napocor's obligations with IPPs have been blamed for the state-owned firm's huge losses in the past.

Lotilla said President Arroyo can ask Congress to issue a resolution that would provide the legal framework for new capacity investments.

"Congress could give such an authority to Napocor so that additional capacity can be provided for. One advantage is that electricity costs will be lower," he said.

He said the government may invoke a provision of the Epira which states that Congress can authorize new capacity investments in areas where there is an energy crisis or a looming power shortage.

“You don’t even need a crisis to be there but merely an indication that there is an emerging shortage in supply," he said, adding that there is no need to amend the power reform law.

Mindanao has a dependable capacity of 1,500 mw. Last year, demand peaked at 1,200 mw. - GMANews.TV (http://www.gmanews.tv/story/26840/Steag-can-expand-Mindanao-operation---Lotilla)

http://i119.photobucket.com/albums/o157/francisxavier9501/ROB.jpg

That's not an Ayala Property, as how you labeled it on the previous thread. That's the land owned by Dangallo's. Kanang Phase1, mao na ilang ga i pre-sell karon. As for the Phase2, dili pa, i already explained on the previous thread the reason why.

Ganun, maganda nga ang pwesto dyan pang resort hotel. So, tabi lang 'to ng high ridge? High ridge na nga 'to diba? Saan ba ang Ayala project? Can you label it again using google earth? More thanks.

Cagayan de Oro, the capital of Misamis Oriental, is one of Mindanao’s most progressive cities, and one of its most picturesque. Surrounded by mountains and bordered by the majestic Cagayan River and Macajalar Bay, Cagayan de Oro exudes freshness and innocence. Vast pineapple plantations define its landscape; and rainforests and wildlife continue to thrive under its care and protection.

GEOGRAPHY
Cagayan de Oro is located along Macabalan Bay in Central Coast of Northern Mindanao. It serves as Regional Center for Region X, bounded by Barangay Bugo on the east; on the west by Barangay Iponan; and Barangay Tumpagon on the south. Its total land area is 48,885 has. or 488.8583 sq. km.

CLIMATE
Cagayan de Oro has a climate characterized by relatively dry season from November to April. Wet season is May to October. Heaviest rainfall is June to October. Driest month is March with an average of 27.42 mm. of rain.

TOURIST ATTRACTIONS
PUEBLO DE OR GOLF AND COUNTRY CLUB - An 18-hole par 72 world classes all weather championship Golf Course designed by world- renowned designer Robe Trent Jones II. It is complete with facilities and amenities such as modern clubhouse, functions rooms, pro-shop, driving range, practice putting greens and others.
VICENTE DE LARA PARK situated in front of the Provincial Capitol of Misamis Oriental with age-old mahogany trees that provides a therapeutic canopy for the promenades.
LA CASTILLA: Museum of Philippine household heirlooms and antiques. This is the Rodolfo and Elsa Pelaez family memorabilia. Administered by the Liceo de Cagayan University.
THE CATHEDRAL: The home of the Archdiocese of Cagayan de Oro City, this place of worship is also famous for its century old stained glass windows…
Catanico Falls - Concealed by huge boulders, the rapids, cascading falls and natural pool of Barangay F.S. Catanico. Only 20 minutes by car and 45 minutes by foot from the city center.
Makahambus Cave - Explore underground caves and a 130-foot circular gorge. The ravine is thick with various species of plants and huge trees.
Malasag Reforestration Area - Rolling hills ideal for horseback riding, mountain climbing/biking. Sunrise and sunset are best in the hills of Malasag where one has a panoramic view of the city and the bay.

GETTING THERE. From Manila, domestic flights leave several times a day for Cagayan de Oro. Passenger ships also arrive regularly from Manila and the Visayas.

GETTING AROUND. Air-conditioned taxis are readily available. Cagayan has extensive bus connections around the region. To reach Camiguin island, take a ferry from either Cagayan de Oro harbor or Balingonan town; flights directly to the island may be available from Cebu.

City Mayor Vicente Y. Emano made this disclosure even after he received assurance from Senator Alfredo Lim, chair of the Senate Committee on Local Government that his committee will give priority attention to the approval of the bill, approved earlier by the House of Representatives.

House Bill No. HB05658 authored by Congressman Constantino G. Jaraula of the lone district of Cagayan de Oro is pushing for the creation of a second congressional district in the city by splitting the present lone district.

Mayor Emano said that the creation of a second congressional district in the city will mean more voices to carry the sentiments of the Cagayanons before the Congress.

"I am glad at this new development because it will also mean better and improved services for the growing population in the city," Mayor Emano pointed out.

The city chief executive said that the creation of a second congressional district is very timely as the city experiences an enormous socio-economic progress, securing its position as bustling metropolis in this part of Mindanao.

Once approved in the Senate, the creation of the city's second district will pave the way for the addition of eight more city councilors in the city government's legislative branch or a total of 16 city councilors to occupy the seats at the City Council.

Mayor Emano urges Koreans anew to invest in Oro

With the influx of South Korean visitors in Cagayan de Oro, City Mayor Vicente Y. Emano appealed to them not only to visit the city for pleasure but to do business most importantly.

Mayor Emano made the invitation to invest in Cagayan de Oro over the weekend before South Korean guests during the 1st Anniversary of Hotel Koresco, the only four-star hotel in the city which is owned by a South Korean company that brought Koreans to play golf at the world class Pueblo de Oro Golf and Country Club.

Mayor Emano said that Koreans have established a strong bond with the Cagayanons especially with the local business community after a series of trade missions held by the city to South Korea in the past.

Mayor Emano pointed out that the Filipinos especially the Mindanaoans needed foreign support in developing the island and that the presence of foreign visitors is a great help to the economy as they stay in hotels, dine in restaurants, and shop in malls and souvenir stores.

But the city mayor urged them to come not just as tourists but also as investors even as he underscored the viability doing business in Cagayan de Oro as has been proven by the experience of Hotel Koresco which invested a 74-room hotel a year ago.

He assured the Koreans that once they will invest in the city, an equal protection of the law will be accorded to them.

You are in the city of Cagayan de Oro, the fastest growing city and the most peaceful in the whole country today. The city beckons to you (investors) and we will adjust to your needs,? Mayor Emano said.

He considered the foreigners especially the Koreans a vital partner of the government to develop Mindanao and asked the Koresco management especially its chairman Ko Suk Koo to help him in negotiating with the executives of POSCO which are planning to put their $750M plant in South-East Asia.

The mayor plans to go to Korea on the 2nd or 3rd week of December, this year for at least two days to lure the executives of POSCO to invest in the city instead of establishing it in Hanoi, Vietnam.

Having Posco in the island is a very good sign for Mindanao?s economy. Posco is the world?s 5th largest steel maker from South Korea.

Meanwhile, over 60 Koreans played golf during the anniversary and out of their registration they donated the amount to the city government which totaled to P100,000.

Mayor Emano expressed his deepest and sincerest gratitude to the Koreans in helping develop Mindanao especially Cagayan de Oro.

Oro to host international rafting in 2007

With the wild rapids of the Cagayan de Oro river, the city is capable of hosting the International Rafting Federation (IRF) World Championship Series in the last quarter of next year.

Mr. Mark Geoffe, board of director of IRF who was in the city recently to watch and manage the 4th National Whitewater Rafting Challenge over the weekend disclosed this.

Geoffe said that with the year-round navigable rapids of the Cagayan de Oro River and its exotic beauty and wild rapids, the city is truly capable of hosting an international event like the World Series.

Since the city lost its bid to Seoul, South Korea for the 2007 World Rafting Championship where Geoffe is the event organizer, he said that the city can be part of the World Series which happens every year and will possibly be in the city by October-November of 2007.

The World Series is a rafting challenge where the best paddlers of each participating country will test their courage and spirit in the wild river of the host countries.

As a veteran paddler who rafted in the worlds wildest rivers, Geoffe finds the Cagayan de Oro river as one of the best in the world especially the up-stream of Cagayan de Oro river like in Ugiaban and Sto. Nino.

The adventure tourism of the city has a high potential for the world market, said Geoffe who considered the citys adventure packages as good enough to compete globally.

Geoffe, together with the local rafting group-- the Cagayan de Oro Whitewater Rafting Adventure is set to visit Department of Tourism secretary Ace Durano for the hosting of next years event. (City Information Office)

She said that foreign tourists who come here mostly are Americans, Japanese and Koreans who make businesses, play golf and do leisure.

Gatuslao added that aside being a destination itself, the city is the jump-off point to other destination in the island of Mindanao that?s why many travelers or tourists converge here first before going to there next destination.

The city also enjoys being the convention site of many firms as it registers 427 conferences/seminars/workshops both local and regional in aspect.

She added that the city?s warm weather despite the rainy season and its good reputation as an ideal place for educational and cultural visits have lured visitors to come to Cagayan de Oro.

Gatuslao said that the domestic and foreign travelers enjoy their stay in the city and vowed to come again to experience more of the city?s thrills and frills.

The city is not only dubbed as a convention destination in Mindanao but it is also recognized as an Adventure Capital of the Philippines,? she said.

That has already been discussed several threads ago.. Owned by Florendo's right?

Pero according to a forumer(based in DVO), wa daw madayon pag palit ana ang SM..

Pero if ever they build one there, surelly the one in Pueblo de Oro would be burried even further. No reason to go uptown na gud kay tanang brands naa na sa Downtown halos.. :ohno:

Cool! Similar concept with Makati's though the design is a departure. Would be nicer if they installed roofings. :)
