Guerilla Resistance On Mindanao Island, 1900-1902 (http://www.freewebs.com/philippineamericanwar/thewarin19001901.htm)

BATTLE OF CAGAYAN DE MISAMIS, APRIL 7, 1900. When the Treaty of Paris ended the Spanish-American War on Dec. 10, 1898, the Spanish governor of Misamis Province turned over his authority to two Filipinos appointed by Emilio Aguinaldo: Jose Roa, who became the first Filipino governor of Misamis; and Toribio Chavez, who served as the first Filipino mayor of Cagayan de Misamis (now Cagayan de Oro City). [On Nov. 2, 1929, Misamis Province was divided into Misamis Occidental and Misamis Oriental].

On Jan. 10-11, 1899, Cagayan de Misamis celebrated Philippine independence by holding a "Fiesta Nacional." The people held a parade and fired cannons outside the Casa Real (where the present city hall --- inaugurated on Aug. 26, 1940 ---stands). For the first time, the Philippine Flag was raised on Mindanao island.

On March 31, 1900, Companies A, C, D and M of the 40th Infantry Regiment of US Volunteers (USV) invaded Cagayan de Misamis. The regimental commander was Col. Edward A. Godwin. Prior to landing, the Americans bombarded Macabalan wharf, with the flagpole flying the Philippine Flag as the primary target. The wharf was about 5 kilometers distant from the town center.

The Americans set up their barracks in the town center, just beside the present St. Agustine Cathedral.

On Friday, April 6, 1900, a newly formed guerilla force led by General Nicolas Capistrano descended 9 kilometers from their camp in Gango plateau in Libona, Bukidnon Province, Mindanao Island. Numbering several hundred, the guerillas planned to attack the Americans in their barracks.

At dawn of Saturday, April 7, 1900, the bells of San Agustin Church pealed; this was the signal for the guerillas to proceed with the attack. First to attack were the macheteros, who were armed only with bolos; they carried ladders which they used to scale the barracks where the Americans slept. They were followed by the riflemen and cavalrymen who, for the most part, were armed with old rifles.

General Capistrano and his staff stood on the spot where the present water tower stands (constructed in 1922). Capistrano directed his commanders through couriers and hand signals. But his plan for a sneak attack was foiled when Bukidnon lumad ("ethnic minority") warriors who were among the macheteros, raised battle cries as they killed an American sentry guarding the Chauco Building where the American commander was sleeping.

The noise roused the Americans; they grabbed their weapons and fired at their attackers from the windows of the barracks. Some American soldiers climbed the Church bell tower where they fired at the poorly armed guerillas. The fighting was centered at the town plaza, the present Gaston Park. The battle raged for an hour. The macheteros, who crashed the barracks, engaged the Americans in fierce hand-to-hand combat. Captain Apolinario Pabayo, an officer of the macheteros, was among the first to die. The macheteros' leader, Captain Clemente Chacon, tried to climb up the Club Popular Building (the site is now occupied by the St. Agustine Maternity and General Hospital), but was repelled twice and had to scramble down due to a gaping head wound from an American bayonet.

When General Capistrano realized that the attack had gone bad, he ordered a retreat. The Americans pursued the Filipinos to the edge of town.

In his annual report for 1900, Maj. Gen. Arthur C. MacArthur, Jr., listed 4 Americans killed and 9 wounded, and 52 Filipinos killed, 9 wounded and 10 captured. (A Filipino account reported that 200 Filipinos were killed). Later, one of the old streets in the city was named "Heroes de Cagayan" in honor of the Cagayan and Misamis guerillas who took part in the battle. It has since been renamed Pacana Street.

BATTLE OF AGUSAN HILL, MAY 14, 1900. Capt. Walter B. Elliott, CO of Company I, 40th Infantry Regiment USV, with 80 men proceeded to the village of Agusan, about 16 kilometers west of Cagayan de Misamis town proper, to dislodge about 500 guerillas who were entrenched on a hill with 200 rifles and shotguns. The attack was successful; 2 Americans were killed and 3 wounded; the Filipinos suffered 38 killed, including their commander, Capt. Vicente Roa. The Americans also captured 35 Remington rifles.

Rufino Deloso led a force of 400 guerillas in Misamis Province (in areas that are now in Misamis Occidental) and engaged the Americans in no less than 20 encounters. On March 7, 1902, he surrendered to Senior Inspector John W. Green of the Philippine Constabulary in Oroquieta, Misamis Province. He gave up with 20 riflemen and 250 bolo men.

BATTLE OF MACAHAMBUS GORGE, JUNE 4, 1900. On Macahambus Gorge, located 14 kilometers south of Cagayan de Misamis (present-day Cagayan de Oro City), Mindanao Island, Filipino guerillas led by Col. Apolinar Velez routed an American force. It is the only known major victory of Filipinos over the Americans on Mindanao Island.

http://www.freewebs.com/philippineamericanwar/Macahambus%20Gorge.jpg

Macahambus Gorge

Capt. Thomas Millar, CO of Company H, Fortieth Infantry Regiment USV, led 100 men against the guerillas who were either well-entrenched, or in inaccessible positions, in the gorge. Practically surrounded by an enemy they could not reach, the Americans lost in a short time 9 men killed, and 2 officers and 7 men wounded, nearly all belonging to the advance guard. One Filipino guerilla was killed. An attempt to advance against a part of the Filipino position was frustrated by encountering innumerable arrow traps, spear pits and pitfalls to which an officer and several men owe their wounds. To avoid getting annihilated, the Americans quickly withdrew, leaving their dead and most of the rifles of those killed.

In his official report to the US War Department, Maj. Gen. Arthur C. MacArthur, Jr., censured Captain Millar: "The palpable mismanagement in this affair consists in not having reconnoitered the enemy's position, but there appears to be no means of reaching a force intrenched, as was this one, in a carefully selected position, which must be approached in single file through a pathless jungle, nor any reason why it should be attacked at all, because, under the circumstances, it does not threaten our troops nor any natives under their protection, and it is sufficient to keep it under observation."

On Jan. 4, 1901, Apolinar Velez was surprised and captured in Opol town, Misamis Province, by Maj. James F. Case, who led a force of 40 mounted men of Company L, 40th Infantry Regiment USV.

Velez

Velez was born on Jan 23, 1865, to a wealthy family in Cagayan de Misamis. In 1884, he worked as a clerk in the court of first instance of Misamis. From 1886 to 1891, he held the positions of oficial de mesa, interpreter, and defensor depresos pobres. On May 10, 1887, he married Leona Chaves y Roa, thus linking two of the most prominent clans in Misamis.

He enlisted in the Spanish army and became a second lieutenant of infantry. He was decorated with the Medalla de Mindanao.

In 1898, he joined Aguinaldo's government; he was appointed chief of the division of justice of the Revolutionary Government of Misamis. In 1900, he was assigned the rank of major in the army and appointed as commander of the "El Mindanao" battalion. He later rose to the rank of Colonel.

From 1901 to 1906, Velez held the post of provincial secretary after which he was elected governor of Misamis and served for two terms. In 1928-1931, he served as mayor of Cagayan de Misamis.

He died on Oct. 21, 1939.

Morag naglibog ko ana, para sa legislative building ba kaha na or mao na kana ang unang phase sa River Boulevard? kay base sa balita:

In a related development, the implementation of the initial phase of the City Government's "Boulevard Along The Riverbank" has already took off as the project contractor is now starting pile driving as part of the riverbank protection project costing P10,713,669.99 million.

Cogon Public Market

Mayor Constantino Jaraula has ordered the city government to construct two elevators at Cogon market.

Jaraula said the construction of the two elevators – one at Vicente Roa street side and the other at Osmeña street side – is to attract customers in going to the market’s third level so that vendors will be enticed to rent space there.

Speaking during yesterday’s (Monday) weekly flag-raising rites, Jaraula also unveiled an ambitious plan to make the two major public markets in the city “as competitive as groceries found in shopping malls.”

Admitting that the Cogon and Carmen markets in their current state are relatively less comfortable for the buying public rather than groceries found in shopping malls, Jaraula said “ang mga tawo karon didto gapamalit sa (naming a few prominent malls). We must lure them back to our public markets.”

Jaraula likewise suggested that to offset the 30 percent reduction of market rental fees starting next month, the city government should lease out advertising awnings or billboards at both Cogon and Carmen markets.

He has already directed his key staff to design the mechanics of this scheme.

on the contrary, IMO perhaps it won't be very good to put up some elevators,,,,,

bka masisira lng yan same with the esclators that are not being used.. mrami kasing mga street children at mga badjao na naglalaro sa market facility.......

on the other hand,.... it's better kung awaton nila sa mga grocery sa mga malls ang style na very clean and not that smelly para mas ad2.an jud sa mga tao..............

some people today think for their comfort in buying and not just in affordability....

I have been away from our beloved city for quite some time and I have some questions.
What would be the best kind of restaurant to put up somewhere across the sports center along Velez? Do you think a restaurant in that general area would have good number of clientele? Do you think a Jollibee or similar fastfood would do well there? What restaurants are already in that area now?

Salamat!

That would be a nice area for a restaurant... Where specifically? The former Twinky's or the building of UCPB... Actually, there are lots of restaurants in the vicinity, specifically sa may Tiano, likod sa Polymedic... With regards to customers, there are a number of offices sa may Sports Center... A number of hotels are also present in the area such as Philtown, Demerin and Nature's Pension Velez... Naa pa gyud ang Polymedic General Hospital... IMHO, a fastfood chain like Jollibee, KFC or Chowking would be a good investment... Sugba-sugba man gud ang daghan dihang dapita, Bai... :-)

This is very promising but lesson learned from the previous plans for this market. If facilities aren't properly used and maintained, it will still turn out to be a huge mess. Look at the escalators, they aren't functioning anymore. And it's the dirtiest escalators I've ever seen in my whole life.

River Boulevard Construction Starts (http://themindanaocurrent.blogspot.com/2009/05/headlines-front-page-may-25-2009.html)

The construction of the boulevard along the Cagayan de Oro River has now started as the contractor has started pile driving.

http://i285.photobucket.com/albums/ll56/rusteel/RIVERBOULEVARD1.jpg

The implementation of the initial phase of the city government’s “Boulevard Along The Riverbank” is part of the river bank protection project costing the city P10,713,669.99 million.

The concept of the river boulevard development was announced by Mayor Constantino Jaraula a few months ago which consists of a “promenade” from City Hall to the 5th Bridge, about 600 meters long and another from Toribio Chaves Street to J.R. Borja Street, about one kilometer long, to be known as the “Golden Mile.”

Included in this development plan is the construction of the Legislative Building which will also house some of the city government’s offices.

Also expected to start soon is the construction of the new Amphitheater and the development of the multi story building at the back of it.

In another development, as the onset of the rainy season nears, the City Government is fast tracking the construction of five major drainage system projects.

City Mayor Constantino G. Jaraula recently ordered key department heads at City Hall to ensure to put the implementation of the drainage projects into full swing in anticipation of the perennial floodings in the poblacion area during the rainy season.

Mayor Jaraula sees an urgent need for the improvement and rehabilitation of the city’s drainage network system in order to relieve the flow of water especially from clogged drainage surrounding the Divisoria area and redirect the same towards Cagayan de Oro River.

It has been observed in the past that the inadequate drainage system has greatly contributed to the overflowing of drainage and open canals along Divisoria area and other low-lying areas of the city.

Presently, three major drainage projects costing P4,903,812.75 million are now being implemented into three phases along Divisoria area, with current appropriation from the 20% Development Fund.

These are the construction of drainage along T. Neri Street from Burgos Street to Capistrano Street (Phase 1) amounting P2,208,396.13 million; construction of drainage along T. Neri Street from Capistrano Street to Apolinar Velez Street (Phase 2) costing P1,408,068.14 million and construction of drainage along T. Neri Street from Apolinar Velez Street to Corrales Street (Phase 3) totaling P1,287,348.48 million.

To further ease recurring street floodings in the poblacion proper, two major drainage system projects worth P9,258,746.30 million are also up for implementation.

These include the construction of drainage system along Hayes Street from Corrales Street to City Hall with a project cost P4,578,257.29 million and the construction of drainage system along Yacapin Street from Corrales Street towards Cagayan de Oro River amounting to P4,680,489.01 million.

Al in all, these projects have a total cost of P24.9M which will all come from the 20% Development Fund of the city.(With a report from the CIO)

The boulevard, which will be known as “The Golden Mile” is one of the priority projects of Mayor Constantino “Tinnex” Jaraula. It will run from City Hall to the proposed 5th bridge at J.R. Borja Street. Photo by Ed Montalvan/PPA-CdeO. Lower Center Photo, P24.9M DRAINAGE PROJECTS GO FULL SWING. As the onset of the rainy season nears, the City Government of Cagayan de Oro is fast tracking the construction of five major drainage system projects at the poblacion area and a river bank protection project with a total project cost of P24.9 million.CIO

Top 20 export commodities rake in US$315.90M

A total of P3.17 billion in importation taxes was paid by the top 20 importers of Northern Mindanao, last year.

Data at the Bureau of Customs (BOC) show that P2.24 billion of the collection was on the value added tax (VAT), P858.50 million on customs duties, P66.55 million on excise tax, P2.85 million on energy tax and P26,342 on safeguard duties (SGD).

Atty. Abedin P. Macapasir, Customs Collector of BOC District No.10 based in Cagayan de Oro City, said the highest amount of such taxes was paid by Nestle Philippines, Inc., P1.66 billion, followed by Jetti Supply Distributors, Inc., P242.25 million.

The rest of the importers and the amount of import taxes they paid in 2008 are as follows: STEAG State Power Inc., P212.81 million, Holcim Phil., Inc., P193.82 million and Pilmico Foods Corp., P190.69 million.

So far, only four of these importers paid the energy tax because they are into the fuel and petroleum business while only one importer was charged the SGD, Macapasir added.

Meanwhile Macapsir also announced that Northern Mindanao’s top 20 export commodities raked in a total of US$315.90 million.

“Such data already represent the combined figures of the export commodities from the region that were loaded at the Port of Cagayan de Oro and that of Manila,” he said.

Of these export commodities, Canned Pineapple Products valued at US$143.30 million continued to be first in the list, followed by the Philippine Crude Coconut Oil with $23.24 million.

“Hot Summer Samahan” Barkada end in CdeO (http://themindanaocurrent.blogspot.com/2009/05/hot-summer-samahan-barkada-end-in-cdeo.html)

By: Pip Panaguiton

The last leg of SMART’s fourth “Hot Summer Samahan” Barkada road trip finished here with more than 5,000 walk-in concert goers the other week.

“We have actually estimated for just 5, 000 but the people kept coming,” said Ms. Judee Caroline E. Dizon, Public Affairs for Northern Mindanao. The event was also promoting domestic tourism on the different cities where it stopped over.

While the close monitoring of AH1N1 influenza virus in different countries was going on, Ms. Dizon said that it was one of their major concerns that the event would push through but “the benefits are greater than the risks in this case,” she said.

SMART brought in different artists to entertain concert goers and provided games and “gimmicks” to the public.

The road trip event went to places in Luzon including Puerto Galera and Laoag City of Bulacan and in Boracay for the Visayas while it finished here for Mindanao. Road trips included visits to heritage tours and major tourist spots. The artists and the entire entourage also enjoyed this city’s white water rafting adventure.

Smart Communications Inc. continues to develop more affordable internet service products for every household to avail of internet service. This way, easier connection to families and friends even outside the country becomes more possible.

“We have a lot of projects that is geared toward getting the internet to the masses,” said Ms. Dizon.

“We are actually creating innovative ways of catering to Filipinos here and abroad,” she added

“We make things easier for our clients,” she added noting that the market for prepaid mobile services is also saturated.

SMART first created a broadband internet service product on post paid plan and evetually developed the product to be pre-paid which is called the SmartBro prepaid.

The prepaid product does not require monthly payments but depends on its operation on the loaded amount which works just like how a mobile phone does in making calls. This is more accessible to use since it requires no documents but identification cards and a minimum payment of P1,995.

Salamat!

thinking of putting up a fast food chain in that area would be a wonderful and unique idea. there are plenty of grill restaurants near velez but a fast food chain would attract more clients since most of the people there are urbanite office workers. office workers tend to be in a hurry especially during day time. after working hours, more jeepneys and vehicles pass by velez. commuters and car owners will notice your restaurant instantly. in short, velez is strategic location for a food business since there are plenty of people in that area. plenty of people means a larger market.

Figaro opens first branch in CDO (http://cagayandeorodev.wordpress.com/2009/05/23/figaro-opens-first-branch-in-cdo/)

Figaro Coffee Systems, Inc. a wholly locally established chain of coffee shops formed in 1993 by a group of seven friends “who drink a lot of coffee”, just opened its first branch in the city at Rosario Arcade, Limketkai Center.

Figaro coffee shops are one of the best well known coffee shops in the Philippines rivaled only by Starbucks.

Aside from their great coffee and pastry products, what makes Figaro tick is their concern and support for the local coffee industry by helping local farmers through their Figaro foundation.

http://www.sunstar.com.ph/files/images/05-23-2009_1.jpg

Cagayan de Oro City Vice Mayor Vicente Emano samples Figaro coffee during the opening of Figaro Coffee Systems. Inc.’s very first branch here at Rosario Arcade Friday. (JB R. Deveza)

Conceptualized as a place where Filipinos can hang out and enjoy good coffee and conversation, Figaro outlets serve the finest native barako coffee.

Ninety-five (95) percent of the coffee served at Figaro is made up of high quality local brands.

Flavored beans are what make Figaro a standout among coffee lovers. The company “cures” its flavors right into the beans instead of the usual practice of most restaurants whereby they add syrup to the brew. Curing the beans eliminates the added calories, chemicals and alcohol. It also allows customers to buy packages of the flavored beans to enjoy at home.

Figaro uses only handpicked Philippine Arabica from the best coffee farms in the country, offering at least 12 flavors of coffee at any one time.

As Figaro’s popularity grew, people started inquiring about franchises. Franchise development started as early as 1996 — one year after inquiries started pouring in. Figaro hired GMB Franchise Developers to create its system, standardizing everything from manuals to equipment and recipes.

Cogon Market to have 2 elevators soon (http://cagayandeorodev.wordpress.com/2009/05/23/figaro-opens-first-branch-in-cdo/)

He has already directed his key staff to design the mechanics of this scheme.

this will help boost cogon market's stall rentals

Tourism execs bullish on new Cebu Pacific flight to CDO (http://www.tmcnet.com/usubmit/-tourism-execs-bullish-new-cebu-pacific-flight-cdo-/2009/05/24/4194117.htm)

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY, May 21, 2009 (Asia Pulse Data Source via COMTEX) -- ? Northern Mindanao?s tourism officials expect more foreign tourist arrivals into the region with a new flight between Davao and this city.

On May 14, the Gokongwei-owned Cebu Pacific Air opened its newest air route ? the 50-minute Davao-Cagayan de Oro flight.

Regional tourism director Catalino Chan said the new route ?is a good connection from the international flights from Davao.? Davao city is the country?s major platform for connecting with the BIMP-EAGA region comprising its neighbors Brunei, Indonesia, and Malaysia. Together with the Philippines, these comprise the touted East Asian Growth Area.

Chan is optimistic an increase in foreign arrivals in Cagayan de Oro would also spur the economies of nearby tourism service-providing localities in northern Mindanao like Camiguin, Bukidnon and Lanao del Norte.

As of the third quarter of 2008, tourist arrivals in northern Mindanao accounted for 240,613, a modest 3.9 percent increase compared to the same period the previous year.

The Cebu Pacific flight service is every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. Using a 72-seater ATR aircraft, the flight leaves Davao 6pm; the turnaround flight leaves Cagayan de Oro 7:10pm.

The Davao-Cagayan de Oro travel route is traditionally served by passenger buses and vans, taking from six to eight hours. More than six years ago, it used to be serviced by a flight but was only short-lived.

In Ozamiz city, Mayor Reynaldo Parojinog Sr. hailed Cebu Pacific?s announcement it will open a flight between the city and Manila.

The air route, according to Parojinog, ?will provide quality air travel service to the public, and will make the city more accessible to more travelers?? According to Candice Iyog, Cebu Pacific?s vice-president for marketing and distribution, the new route will start on June 16 using Airbus A319 aircraft. The service will initially run four times weekly.

The 85-minute flight is slated to leave Manila 5:55am; the turnaround flight leaves Ozamiz 7:50am.

The Manila-Ozamiz route is currently served only by daily and usually fully booked flights of Air Philippines for almost two years now. In spite of this, the traffic of passengers and goods from Ozamiz to Manila is still largely facilitated through an almost three-day travel by boat.

Another time-conserving option is taking connecting flights via Cebu. The Cebu-Ozamiz route is served by daily 45-minute flights of both Cebu Pacific and Philippine Airlines.

Figaro coffee shops are one of the best well known coffee shops in the Philippines rivaled only by Starbucks.

Aside from their great coffee and pastry products, what makes Figaro tick is their concern and support for the local coffee industry by helping local farmers through their Figaro foundation.

BPO industry: RP's new symbol of competitiveness (http://www.tmcnet.com/usubmit/-bpo-industry-rps-new-symbol-competitiveness-/2009/05/24/4194111.htm)

May 21, 2009 (Asia Pulse Data Source via COMTEX) -- MANILA, May 21 (PNA) ? Crisis has been defined by some optimists "as opportunity flying with very swift wings and willing to grant immense rewards to persons courageous enough to snatch it." With the country?s business process outsourcing (BPO) industry needing an estimated 120,000 new employees this year, as attested by Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) records, President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo has taken decisive measures aimed at fully supporting the growth of the industry with appropriate policies.

For one, she ordered the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) and the Business Processing Association of the Philippine (BPAP) to immediately conduct training and re-tooling programs that would transform computer engineers and other skilled workers rendered unemployed by the effects of the global financial crisis into highly qualified call center agents.

President Arroyo justified this re-tooling directive for displaced engineers and electronic manufacturing workers after noting that despite the global economic meltdown, employment opportunities still abound for call centers agents, animation, medical transcriptionists, software developers and other BPO-related fields.

She stated that this shows retrenched workers still have a big chance to land jobs in other sectors.

The President vowed that the government will continue its support for the vigorous growth of the call center and BPO industry in the country with the right policies, quality manpower resource and the infrastructure needed to cut down the cost of connectivity.

She cited the BPO and call center development as one of the brightest spots of the Philippine economy because it uses the country?s greatest resource ?- its people.

"Our people are our greatest resource, whether they are our one million workers in Saudi Arabia or our 100,000 workers in our business process outsourcing industry," she said.

Calling the BPO industry the "new symbol of competitiveness," President Arroyo pointed out that her administration has released P500 million for high school vouchers "so that our young people can study in private high schools." Another P500 million has been released for scholarships in center finishing schools to enable young Filipinos to cope with the manpower requirements of the industry, particularly fluency in the English language.

"We have moved up the value chain and our country will continue to support the BPO industry with the right policies," the Chief Executive said.

She also noted that the country?s telecommunications infrastructure has improved tremendously, resulting in lower cost of communications -- the key to the success of the BPO industry.

She said that the government is determined to improve the economy and governance such as fighting graft, among others, "but there are no quick fixes and the competitiveness and the enduring drive of the Filipinos will carry us through." "We are making headway due to our good governance and fiscal performance. Our economy is in a winning streak due to the tough decisions we make," the President said, as she pointed out that the "flowback" of a growing economy would trickle down to the grassroots through enhanced basic services.

Many factors contribute to the amazing growth of the Philippine BPO industry. One is the rising cost of doing business in industrialized countries like the United States, forcing foreign companies to downsize and outsource peripheral e-services to developing countries like the Philippines to cut overheads, enjoy better power and telecommunications infrastructure, competitive labor cost in terms of quality and value for money, and strong government support for information communication technology (ICT)-related industries, and the Filipinos? sheer proficiency in English and information technology skills, warmth, trainability and customer orientation.

International research groups generally forecast that ICT-enabled services will become a USD200-billion world wide industry by 2010 with the BPO segment contributing USD42 billion.

A call center is a central customer service operation where agents (often called customer care specialists or customer service representatives) handle telephone calls on behalf of clients.

Clients include mail-order catalog houses, telemarketing companies, computer product help desks, banks, financial service and insurance groups, transportation and freight handling firms, hotels and IT companies.

The size of an operation is described in terms of the number of "seats." A seat consists of a station with two or three people alternating in several shifts to provide 24-hour call center service.

The industry's main target markets include the United States, Australia and the United Kingdom.

For its part, Commission on Information and Communications Technology (CICT) Secretary and Cyber Corridor Super Region Development Champion Ray Anthony Roxas-Chua III sees a strong growth in the Philippines' IT-BPO industry.

"We have overtaken Malaysia and we already took a lot from India, making us now No. 3 in market share, with 15 percent behind Canada (27 percent) and India (37 percent). This growth is due to innate Filipino talent, robust connectivity, accessibility through international and domestic airports, growth in PEZA IT parks and buildings, and the formation of ICT Councils nationwide as the drivers of growth," Chua said.

President Arroyo has also directed the Cyber Corridor Super Region Development Champion to develop the Cyber Corridor in Metro Manila, Cebu, Davao, Iloilo, Cagayan de Oro, Metro Cavite, Bacolod, Pampanga Central, Bulacan Central (Baliuag, Marilao, Meycauayan), Bulacan South (Malolos, Calumpit) and Lipa City as the next Top Ten Wave Cities.

International investors believe in the Philippine Super Region plan. It is projected to spur rapid development, increase labor and income in the cyber corridor as the regions, cities, and towns are now investing in information and technologies that will create more jobs, business opportunities and income.

In the Cyber Corridor Super Region Development Plan, the government will also ensure internet connectivity for all public high schools nationwide.

As this developed, leading BPO company Sitel formally opened a corporate office at the One Julia Vargas Building in Pasig City, attesting anew the country?s position as one of the leading call center investment locations in the world.

Some of the key benefits that attracted Sitel to the Philippines and make it a great market for offshore contact center support include: available, highly-motivated and well-educated workforce, a well-developed country with a stable political and economic situation, ease of access for traveling visitors (no travel visa required), reliable telephone infrastructure and reduced operating costs The Sitel centers are state-of-the-art in design, taking advantage of the most reliable technologies, business continuity redundancies, and space utilization approaches.

Sitel?s operation in the Philippines leverages the country?s global expertise in state-of-the-art contact center technology (including voice over internet protocol and site interconnectivity and its global best-practice approach to human resources, training, project implementation, and performance management.

Sitel pays a great deal of attention not only to training its customer service professionals (CSPs) in general contact center skills and client product knowledge, but also in areas such as accent neutralization and regional cultural knowledge.

Holcim surprises in Q1 with 71% profit growth (http://www.tribune.net.ph/business/20090522bus2.html)

By Ayen Infante

05/22/2009

Giant cement maker Holcim Philippines Inc. showed a surprising 27 percent growth in revenues during the first quarter and a net profit of P793 million, up by 71 percent as against P463 million last year but indicated worries over the remaining months of the year.

Earnings before depreciation, amortization, interest and taxes (Ebitda) went up by 29 percent to P1.8 billion.

Company officials said prospects for the firm hinges on the government fulfilling its target on massive infrastructure projects.

In its annual stockholders meeting yesterday, company chief operating officer Ian Thackwray said due to the global financial crisis “anything better than zero is good,” citing the company’s poor performance in 2008.

“This certainly exceeds our expectations. We are seeing higher than anticipated growth in the market including regions outside the national capital region,” he said.

One factor that has contributed to the company’s robust growth during the period was the rise in construction activities particularly on housing.

The strong demand for cement during the period has pushed the company to gain a total revenue of P5.5 billion or equivalent to a 27 percent increase from P4.3 billion in the period last year.

Cement demand, meanwhile, grew by 6 percent from 2 percent in the same period of 2008 mainly due to sustained construction activities.

“We are encouraged by the strong first quarter results, but there are several factors that will come to play, most important of which will be the ability to sustain infrastructure investments,” he added.

He said the second half performance will be dependent on infrastructure projects of government as the industry sees a significant slowdown in approval of projects particularly commercial activities.

But the reduction in fuel cost may also serve to benefit the company but results are yet to be seen towards the end of the year, he said.

Holcim’s 2008 revenues grew to P18.2 billion up by 12 percent from P16.2 billion in 2007, with growth in sales volumes exceeding industry levels.

Revenue growth, however, was not enough to offset huge increases in operating costs, cutting profits by 42 percent. Net income in 2008 dropped to P1.3 billion from P2.2 billion the previous year. Earnings before EBITDA fell to P4.6 billion from P5.5 billion in 2007.

The company has produced around 4.6 million tons of cement clinker in 2008, and targets to reach an estimated production of 6 million tons this year.

The total volume is out of the 6.5 million tons total capacity including the capacity of its three mothballed facilities in Bulacan and two in Lugait in Misamis Oriental.

River Boulevard Construction Starts (http://themindanaocurrent.blogspot.com/2009/05/headlines-front-page-may-25-2009.html)

The construction of the boulevard along the Cagayan de Oro River has now started as the contractor has started pile driving.

http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_p6TqhBe7UlU/Shd0m5ouWWI/AAAAAAAAJBM/BW8S0d61B7s/s400/RIVER+BOULEVARD+1.jpg

Tourism czar to outline plans and programs at CREBA meeting on May 28 (http://www.mb.com.ph/node/201935)
May 24, 2009, 12:55pm

Secretary of Tourism Joseph H. Durano will discuss the plans and programs of the Department of Tourism (DoT) at noon of May 28 at the 5th business meeting of the Chamber of Real Estate and Builders Associations (CREBA) in Bahia Ballroom, Intercontinental Hotel, Makati City.

Durano is expected to touch on the Tourism Policy Act of 2009 (Republic Act No. 9593) recently signed into law by President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo which aims to completely overhaul and streamline the DoT. Tourism industry sectors welcomed the passage of the law, while some quarters feared the revamp might set off a power struggle for open DoT posts.

Dr. Jaime A. Cura, CREBA national president, said the business meeting will also formally launch the 2009 CREBA national convention on the theme "Real Estate Opportunities in the Midst of Economic Challenges" set in Cagayan de Oro City in October. The convention, he said, aims to make a strong stand that while "we are in the midst of a difficult economic environment, we offer various bright opportunities in the real estate sector."

CREBA is the largest organization of some 3,000 major players in the country’s housing and real estate industry with 30 chapters nationwide and affiliates abroad. Atty. Manuel M. Serrano is CREBA founder and incumbent board chairman.

Businessmen, decision makers, financiers, investors, land owners, real estate professionals and local government planners, urban planners and consultants are expected to join the discussions, Cura said.

Durano has headed DoT since August 2004 as the youngest Cabinet member of the Arroyo administration. He served as the Development Champion of the Central Philippines Super Region and Cabinet Officer for Regional Development (CORD) for the CARAGA Region. He was congressman for the Cebu first district in 1998-2004.

murag lain man ang maroon, i think anti rust na nga primer then later ang sak2 nga color . IMO.

^^surprising kaayo nga i-maroon ang SM City CdO. i wouldn't know if the public may find it attractive or not. but either ways, the structural design of the building still looks great at all angles, whatever color man gamiton... at least if i-maroon jud nila, malahi na ang color from SM City Davao and SM City Pampanga. :)

^^Maybe you are referring to the Haggerty Hall which also housed some of the XUHS rooms?....That was long gone and demolished around 2000-2002 if I'm not mistaken and replaced with the multi-storey Commerce Building and canteen...Oooops! Thread 37 naman diay ta! Congratz!

It has been that long for me, could no longer recall if it was called Haggerty Hall. There used to be a canteen in between and a few meters beside the chapel and the science center. At the back of that canteen was the social science center, the dorm was behind this building. Anyway guess you are right, looking closely at the XU postcatd, I could surmise that it is no longer there.

Construction Boom in Cagayan de Oro (http://cagayandeorodev.wordpress.com/2009/05/25/construction-boom-in-cagayan-de-oro/)

“After the flood comes the rainbow”

After Noah’s Flood, the Bible relates that the rainbow gained meaning as the sign of God’s promise that terrestrial life would never again be destroyed by flood (Genesis 9.13-15).

This has to be what is happening in the City of Golden Friendship. In January this year, Cagayan de Oro experienced its worst flooding in history. Non-stop heavy rains lasted for several days inundating several areas and forcing all commercial operations to a halt. The city was virtually a calamity area with its main highway (CM Recto Avenue) flooded up to waist-deep waters. Schools and shops closed. The city would never be the same again.
But since then, the City has experienced a significant commercial boom. Commercial operations resumed and the city has focused on a massive drainage re-construction. New and potential investors have visited the city. In previous posts, I have indicated some of the big construction projects in the city. But hey, there’s more, most of which just happened to sprout without getting noticed.

Famous Pension House – Yacapin Street

Iligan City’s Famous Pension House has come to Cagayan de Oro. Located along Yacapin Street, just across Mindy’s, the 4-storey building is targetting an August 2009 opening. But based on the photos below, completion will be sooner than expected.

http://cagayandeorodev.files.wordpress.com/2009/05/102_5412.jpg?w=226&h=300

Famous Pension House has 3 branches in Iligan City. This project will be No. 4. Then, the proponent will soon construct another branch (probably no. 5) near Mabulay Subd.

4-storey Building Reconstruction along Tirso Neri St.

Located just beside Park View Hotel fronting the Amphitheater Park, this construction began unnoticed last month.

http://cagayandeorodev.files.wordpress.com/2009/05/102_5407.jpg?w=511&h=386

3-storey Commercial Building at the corner of Osmeña Street and Limketkai Drive

A few months back, this construction weas stopped due to unknown reasons. But work has resumed significantly fast-paced.

Commercial Office Building construction along Yacapin-Velez Streets.

Initially rumored to be the site of a multi-storey hotel, the proponents have altered their plans and decided to transfer the hotel project at Paseo del Rio. (Probably due to space constraints)

4-storey Diagnostics Center Building along T. Chaves-Burgos Street

Construction began early this year. The site is just a stone’s throw from both the Golden Mile and Amphitheater projects.

Commercial Building along JR Borja-Daumar Streets

Originally the site of a bank, the workers worked months to demolish the old structure which had more than a foot-thick concrete walls housing the bank vaults. With demolition completed, vertical erection is on-going.

Commercial Building construction along A Velez St. (beside Bank of Commerce)

Used to be the site of BB Park, an open air restaurant on grilled food. Construction is now on the 2nd floor.

PROJECT WATCH: Golden Mile update (http://cagayandeorodev.wordpress.com/2009/05/25/project-watch-golden-mile-update/)

http://cagayandeorodev.files.wordpress.com/2009/05/102_5432.jpg?w=462&h=358

After months of waiting, the much-anticipated Golden Mile Project of Mayor Constantino G. Jaraula has finally commenced.

Contrary to what I’ve posted a few weeks back, the ongoing pile driving behind the City Tourism Hall is for the river boulevard project and not the proposed Legislative Building. However, based on recent news, the legislative building would follow soon together with the proposed redevelopment of the Community Amphitheater.

http://cagayandeorodev.files.wordpress.com/2009/05/goldenmile2-copy.jpg?w=544&h=330

The Golde Mile is a flagship project of Mayor Jaraula and designed to attract more investors and tourists. The initial phase consists of a 600-meter long “walkway” from City Hall to the 5th (Kagay-an) Bridge, and a one kilometer “Boulevard” from Toribio Chaves Street to J.R. Borja Street. The project also aims to promote Cagayan de Oro River.

http://cagayandeorodev.files.wordpress.com/2009/05/102_5424.jpg?w=511&h=386

http://cagayandeorodev.files.wordpress.com/2009/05/102_5425.jpg?w=511&h=386

http://cagayandeorodev.files.wordpress.com/2009/05/102_5433.jpg?w=511&h=386

The Golden Mile is envisioned to be a mixed use development and part of the city’s central business district. As an added bonus, the construction of a 30-storey condotel by Korean proponents at the back of the amphitheater is also expected to follow soon. Accordingly, the city government has purchased the lot owned by the Chaves Family where the condotel will be constructed. Per radio interviews, the Chaves Family also donated for the amphitheater project.

Marketing in time of crisis (http://www.philstar.com/Article.aspx?articleId=470992&publicationSubCategoryId=78)
By Rose De La Cruz Updated May 25, 2009 12:00 AM

MANILA, Philippines - A crisis, such as what the world is currently experiencing, is the best reason why marketing should be pursued even more vigorously than during comfortable times.

Thus, even the Philippine Marketing Association (established since 1954) is forcefully marketing its coming first national marketing summit to get more participants from business, marketing professionals and the academe to get involved in coming up with solutions and innovative strategies to push products and services in a dull market.

At a recent press event to launch the summit slated for June 16 and 17, PMA president Mylene Abiva said “now more than ever we need to get all minds to present us with new solutions and new approaches to perk up the market for our products and services and push our country to foreign investors and visitors.”

“Our conference will tell our people how to manage the crisis. Our problem is to call on our members and marketing professionals to contribute and come up with solutions to the crisis, which is why we decided to hold this first summit,” she added.

Abiva said the summit’s output, will be presented to Trade and Industry Secretary Peter Favila as PMA’s proposed solutions on how the country can hurdle the current crisis so the country can be ahead in adopting to a recovering global economy.

Delegates will be given an academic presentation of the economic outlook for 2009 by Dr. Bernardo Villegas of the Univerity of Asia and the Pacific and the global economic situation from top fiscal and economic gurus from foreign delegates.

They will also hear about the bustling BPO sector; the role of government in branding the country to foreign investors and tourists; market driving strategies, business management systems for small and medium enterprises, out of the box advertising and the rising trend in public relations.

PMA officials present at the summit launch were uniform in saying that because of the high cost of above-the-line (newspapers, TV, radio and outdoor ads) campaigns, more and more companies, who are scrimping their budgets, will resort to below the line and out of the box marketing efforts such as SMS, Internet, word of mouth and event sponsorships to drum up patronage for their products and services.

Decisions on advertising medium to pick would depend on the products and targeted markets and impact that marketers intend to attain from their efforts, they said.

The PMA, which has long concentrated on Metro Manila businesses for membership, has aggressively established provincial chapters where marketing support is more urgent.

Already, the association has set up 13 provincial chapters in Subic, Bacolod, Bicol, Pampanga, Cagayan de Oro, Cavite, Bulacan, Iloilo, Davao, Cebu, Soksargen, Batangas and Baguio.

After the national marketing summit, the PMA will be holding national marketing caravans or lecture series in the 13 provincial chapters to teach the marketing practitioners in these provinces how to be globally competitive and similar topics that are relevant to their local conditions such as tourism marketing for Subic and other provinces; BPO and even their local products.

Seems like the City of Golden Friendship is fast becoming the new city of major developments! Cagayan de Oro City is the newest home of a Teriyaki Boy branch.

Teriyaki Boy is a fast-casual Japanese dining restaurant here in the Philippines and yes, I often make it a point to drop by one of their branches in Manila (I also like Tokyo Tokyo, another fast-casual Japanese-style dining restaurant chain which has a couple of branches in Manila).

Thankfully, Teriyaki Boy now have an outlet in CDO — in SM City CDO along Masterson Avenue, to be exact.

*picture taken using only my Motorola Krzr

Is it just me or has Teriyaki Boy changed their corporate look? Their logo used to have red and black, yes?…now I noticed that they prominently used yellow. Or does this look only apply in their SM CDO branch?

Anyways, as soon as I saw their new outlet, I ordered some meals to go. I ordered my favorite Ebi Fry (breaded deep-fried prawns), Teriyaki Boy Chicken Don (boneless chicken marinated in special Teriyaki Boy sauce), 2 orders of Yakimeshi (Japanese fried rice with vegetables and ground pork), miso soup and requested a cup of their house tea. I requested that only the miso soup and the tea be served while the others should be to go. (Before you get so surprised with my order, the meals were for meant for three people hehe)

Unfortunately, my first visit at the new Teriyaki Boy branch in SM Cagayan de Oro City wasn’t all that smooth. My waiter messed up my order so I had to wait longer. My miso soup was served way before the house tea plus I even had to remind the waiter about my drink. They served the wrong package to me at first (thank goodness I checked else I would’ve carried a Tonkatsu meal instead of Ebi Fry!) Still, I knew very well that they’re new and I’m sure the waiters and waitresses are still adjusting to their new jobs so I really didn’t mind the “confusion” that much.

What I liked about the new branch, by the way, was its interiors. Very clean and stylish looking.I didn’t quite understand the long strands of cloth (?) that hung from the ceiling, though, but still…I think overall the new branch was tastefully designed.

Good news....

Meds bought by senior citizens are tax exempt
Updated May 26, 2009 12:00 AM
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Rep. Rufus Rodriguez, (2nd District, Cagayan de Oro City), yesterday announced that House Bill No. 5210 entitled “An Act amending Sections 27, 30, 34, 108 and 109 of the National Internal Revenue Code of 1997, as amended,” has been approved by the House of Representatives on third reading and is now pending in the Senate.

House Bill No. 6218 authored by Rodriguez entitled “An Act Exempting the Purchase of Medicine by Senior Citizens from the coverage of the Value Added Tax and amending Section 109 (1) of the National Internal Revenue Code, as amended,“ has been incorporated in House Bill No. 5210.

Rodriguez explained that under RA No. 7432 senior citizens are granted twenty percent (20%) discount from all establishments relative to utilization of transportation services, hotels and similar lodging establishment, restaurants and recreation centers and purchase of medicine anywhere in the country.
However with the imposition of the value added tax, this 20% was reduced to eight percent (8%).

House Bill No. 5210 now seeks that medicines bought by senior citizens be exempted from value added tax considering that the elderly mostly needs medicine to maintain stable health, Rodriguez said.

GM's Corner: The Audacity of Hope (http://www.pueblodeoro.com/features.php)
By: Rodolfo L. Menes (Added: 2009-01-07)

Pueblo de Oro has a history of venturing into the less-trodden path. In the mid-90's, we set our sights on marginal pastureland in what was then the outskirts of Cagayan de Oro. While most development was concentrated in the downtown area, we staunchly set forth in building a 360-hectare mixed use Township in what is now known as Upper Carmen, CdeO.

At our audacity in laying our cards on the then-empty expanse of land before us, many were doubtful. We dreamt of residential villages, a bustling commercial center, of residents and locators all joined together in one community.

Pinning our hopes on the land that would become Pueblo de Oro did not mean unpreparedness. Our master-plan was put together by Louis Berger International. We hired renown golf course architect Robert Trent Jones II to design Pueblo Golf's world class championship course. When we said that SM City would be coming to Pueblo, many dismissed this as rumor. Despite the difficulties we all faced, such as the then Asian Financial crisis, we continued to build and continued to hope - our ultimate object being our hope in God - that He will honor good and faithful work.

We were fortunate that all of these elements came together, and by God's grace, our audacity has paid off. The top mall chain in the country, SM City, materialized in the Township in 2002. The top educational institution in the region, Xavier University (Ateneo de Cagayan), not only transferred their high school department to Pueblo, but opened a grade school campus as well. Concentrix, then known as Link2Support, opened Cagayan de Oro's first and largest call center in the Pueblo I.T. Ecozone, which is the first I.T. Park in Mindanao.

Despite the current turmoil in the world financial markets, we are prepared to weather the storm. The attractive financing schemes and other options including those of partners like Pag-IBIG continue to give buyers the chance to own their homes at rates they can afford. In addition, OFWs and balikbayans who are looking to return to the Philippines where the cost of living is markedly lower continue to be drawn to our projects.

We at Pueblo de Oro remain bullish that 2009 will be better than ever. With the opening of new Phases of Forest View Homes and Golden Glow North 2, a new residential subdivision right beside the Oro Chamber Business Promotion Centre, we continue to offer affordable and value-for-money housing products. We also have several new projects which we are excited to open to the public early next year. Indeed, like U.S. President-Elect Barack Obama in his second book, we have the audacity of hope.

In addition to the Twin Eco Towers, PODC plans to start construction on a two story commercial building at Regatta Square by the last quarter of this year.Flores said the planned edifice would have commercial spaces to let in the ground floor and mixed-use spaces suitable for medical/dental clinics, spas, and stores in the second floor.

Also on the drawing board is a third PODC building along Masterson Avenue that is expected to rise by the end of the year.

sa wakas, magkakaroon na ng edipisyo ang Regatta Square! :okay:

Cagayanons on a Cruise (http://www.goldstardailynews.com/content.php?sectionid=3&id=3603)

THE author in white with Orville Willkom under the heat in the ruins of the ancient city of Ephesus, Turkey

“Filipinos can be found in every country in the world. According to the Philippine Migration and Development Statistical Almanac of the Institute of Migration and Development Issues (IMDI), 239 countries have Filipinos living there.” ….. Filipinas Magazine, May 2009, Daly, California, U.S.A.

In a world dotted with Filipinos, Cagayanons are not far behind. There are Cagayanons in Australia, Saudi Arabia, Spain, Mexico, Suriname, South Africa, Germany, Dubai, England, Scotland, Guam, Brunei and Japan. There are plenty in Canada and the United States. There is a Cagayanon in almost every state in the U.S. from Alaska, Hawaii, California, New York to Florida. Fifty percent of Cagayanons in the U.S. are in California.

With Cagayanons scattered all over the globe and always on the move, it is very possible to bump into a Cagayanon on your travels. When Gerlou, my wife, went with her sisters to Lourdes, France, they encountered Cagayanons Nancy Berces and Nena Willkom. Actually the two are from California but they were there as volunteer workers. Every year, Nancy and Nena do volunteer work in Lourdes. When Gerlou and Anjanette, our daughter, were in London, they met inside the church Rene and Lynn Fruto. There are similar stories of Cagayanons meeting Kagay-anons while traveling in Europe or elsewhere. By the way, whichever part of the world you are traveling, if you want to meet Filipinos, go to a church on Sunday. It is guaranteed you will meet a Filipino there. Who knows there may be a Cagayanon among them. Meeting Filipinos in another part of the world gives you the opportunity to ask where to go or which places to avoid.

On our recent cruise around the Mediterranean Sea, we went on land as we did several times and upon entering a church, in Dubrovnik, Croatia, we met a guy who goes by the name of Syville Padayao. He happens to be one of the dance entertainers of our ship, Splendour of the Sea. Syville was born in Cagayan de Oro but left the city with his family at the age of 4.

Syville was not the only Cagayanon we met on that cruise. While talking in our native tongue in the ship, someone behind us interrupted with, “Taga asa man diay mo?” She too is from Cagayan de Oro. She is Leyvinia Ornstein, formerly Leyvinia Roa Villalba. She was on that cruise with her American hubby, Jerry Ornstein celebrating their 25th wedding anniversary. Leyvinia used to study at the Pilgrim Institute in Cagayan de Oro and belongs to the Roa and Villalba clans.

With Gerlou and me on that cruise were Cagayanons Tex and Dulce Luminarias, Rolly and Norma Navarro, Keith and Bingbing Venadas, Orville and Claire Willkom, Monina Jafarpour and Mafet Docdocil. Tex and Dulce were there to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary.

Included in the many activities of the cruise was a poker tournament. Cagayanon Keith Venadas bested all the players. As the cruise poker champion he ordered champagne to go with the anniversary celebration of Tex and Dulce.

On board the Splendour of the Sea were some 56 Filipino guests from a total of 1,200 guests. The ship’s crew numbered 600 and of that, 126 were Filipinos.

For our nightly dining, we were assigned to table number 88. Almost directly in front of us was Fermin from Bohol playing the piano. Joining him with his violin was Lito, another Filipino from Luzon. Because there were many Filipinos around the piano, most of the music they played were Filipino classics. But only the Cagayanons had special treats. For our last breakfast, the kitchen surprised us with daing na bangus with fried rice, eggs and sausage. Then the last dinner was with rice and adobo. And of course, a special cake for our 50th anniversary celebrants. (Just for the record, the rest of us are still far away from our 50th.)

EVEN as other major projects may temporarily be shelved due to global financial meltdown, Misamis Oriental Governor Oscar S. Moreno remains optimistic the P7.853-billion Laguindingan Airport Project (LADP) in the province will be completed as scheduled in January 2012.

"We are ahead of schedule. And, by the end of this year, I expect the accomplishment to reach 60 percent," Moreno said in his weekly television and radio interviews.

He said he believes that the progress in the civil works, access road construction and in the relocation of affected families have already proven the skeptics wrong.

"I, too, sounded cynical about it in the past," he confided but quickly added that the on-site visit of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo in January 10, 2006 was the most significant event for the airport project.

Moreno said he is anticipating discussions on what will be the official name of the airport in Laguindingan, once completed, and he would willingly leave that to the wisdom of those who would have a say in it, later on.

As of May 17, this year, the project manager reported that the civil works on the entire airport site and the construction of the 7,200-square-meter passenger terminal building have a combined 41.91 percent accomplishment. Based on the accomplishment report, the project registered a 12.73 percent positive slippage or 5.33 months ahead of the original schedule.

On the construction of the airport's 4.4-kilometer four-lane access road, the work under Phase 1 (as of May 15, 2009) was already 96.88 percent accomplished while the Phase 2 was 85.32 percent done. The two phases both involve the embankment, sub-grade and sub-base course laying, drainage while the second phase includes clearing and grubbing and limestone excavation.

The access road, which connects the airport site to the Iligan-Cagayan de Oro-Butuan highway, covers an area of 24.11 hectares with total project cost of P187.765 million and is being undertaken by Vicente T. Lao Construction.

An airport layout plan shows that the LADP consists of a 2,100-meter x 45-meter runway, 23-meter x 260-meter taxiways, main apron measuring some 130 meters x 355 meters (five aircraft bays, laboratory building, air traffic control tower with the operation building. Other structures will include a cargo terminal building, maintenance building, antenna farm, fuel farm with a pumping area, crash fire and rescue area, a reserved hangar area, a guardhouse, and a two chamber sewerage and waste-water treatment plant. The main airport area will have a 12,000-meter perimeter fence.

Construction work is being undertaken by contractor Hanjin Heavy Industries and Construction Co. Ltd. (HHIC), a South Korean firm.

The DOTC PMO has also hired the technical services of Yooshin Engineering Corporation through its local counterpart, Schema Konsult Inc. (Press release)

Clearing of riverbanks ordered (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/cagayan-de-oro/clearing-riverbanks-ordered)
Wednesday, May 27, 2009

THE government has ordered all riverbanks in the country to be cleared of informal structures and obstacles, and all waterways restored to waters suitable for fisheries and boating.

Lawyer Ernesto D. Adobo Jr., regional executive director of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) in Northern Mindanao, confirmed this Tuesday.

"This move, however, must be made with due consultation and proper relocation assistance for those who will be affected by the clearing within 24 months from the issuance of Executive Order (EO) 774 which the President signed on December 26, 2008," Adobo said.

Adobo said Executive Order O774 entitled "Reorganizing the Presidential Task Force on Climate Change," also requires a rainwater collection system to be put in place with the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), which is tasked to lead the Task Group on Rainwater Conservation.

Within 90 days from the issuance of EO 774, demonstration projects shall be in operation and plans for scaling them up nationwide, especially in areas highly vulnerable to droughts, shall be presented to the President through the Presidential Assistant on Climate Change (PACC).

Meanwhile, EO 774 calls for water recycling, its prevention and recovery, as well as treatment of used water to be placed at the highest priority of survival.

Local government units (LGUs) in the country have also been directed to fully implement the law on Solid Waste Management (SWM).

EO 774 also calls on the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) to lead a task group in the implementation of SWM and targets the reduction of solid waste generation by 50 percent within six months, after its issuance on December 26, 2008.

The task group shall report to the President in person or through the PACC every Friday during the weekly visits to offices and regions to campaign for responsible SWM.

In like manner, EO 774 calls on the Department of Health (DOH) to enjoin the private sector, such as the sludge excavation contractors and water concessionaires, to undertake a methane recovery program from human and animal waste and convert it into cooking gas and other forms of energy.

After six months of such SWM campaign, the next stage and level of the focused environmental conservation, protection and restoration (CPR) drive will be to identify and regenerate the forest lands and protected areas of the islands and seas of the Philippines. (PIA/Sun.Star Cagayan de Oro)

Cagayan de Oro City Mayor
Constantino "Tinnex" Jaraula

MY good friend mayor Tinnex Jaraula of Cagayan de Oro City is not going to seek reelection in the May 2010. He is set to retire for good and enjoy all his blessings in life. He has successful kids and beautiful grandchildren. He has everything a man could desire. In short, Mayor Tinnex is a very accomplished man.

But there is always something else that a man like Tinnex could do as a fitting finesse, a happy ending, and enduring legacy to the people he loves to serve. He can still do one last magical weave of his stick and do magic in the City of Golden Friendship.

He could make the ‘‘trisikad’’ disappear. Trisikads are three-wheeled vehicles, pedal driven, that ply the city streets with wild abandon.

I have written twice before on this trisikad problem. Everyone seems helpless that frustration gets into the nerves of the city folks. Trisikads create traffic jams, increase the risks of accidents and plainly expose the riding public to accidents of unimaginable magnitude. They are a problem that is difficult to solve.

Except with Mayor Jaraula. He is our only hope and, truth to tell, the only person on earth who could make this problem go away.

Even by an executive order, no need of any ordinance from the city council, Mayor Jaraula can ban the trisikads from all over Cagayan de Oro. With no exception, trisikads should be banned.

As aptly suggested by ex-councilor Noel Beja last week, the city council can enact an appropriation ordinance that would pay off a thousand pesos to all trisikad owners for them to turn in their trisikads to the city government. Then mayor Jaraula can have the trisikads welded together and thrown into Macajalar Bay.

Then, in a couple of years, or at five years maximum, we will have beautiful artificial corral reefs in our shallow seas. It could become a tourist attraction that would generate more jobs for the former trisikad owners and drivers.

What we need is not only political will. We need the gall and the courage of a man like my friend Tinnex.

With no political debts to repay, with no fear of a backlash during election day as he is no longer running for office, with all the sincerity of a man molded into true public service, Mayor Tinnex could do what no one else could do. He can ban the trisikads from the entirety of Cagayan de Oro.

Some people might be angry because they would claim that they lost their only means of income from driving trisikads. The operators would raise hell. Some people living in small subdivisions would have to walk to the gate or to where the jeepneys pass in their routes. But these complaints will soon fade away.

People would always find ways to eke out a living in the post-trisikad era. Those who walked from their houses to the jeepneys stops will find their health improving, their heart healthier and they will rediscover a daily exercise that they have not engaged in before—walking.

And I am very certain that in the end of the day, people would remember the courage and will of Mayor Tinnex Jaraula of having accomplished the seemingly impossible act of ridding Cagayan de Oro of trisikads.

He will be remembered fondly of the peace and safety and the aesthetic image he caused in the last days of his office. He will leave a lasting legacy in the generations to come. A legacy that no other could do. Then he can retire peacefully with the pride that befits the man that he is.

My kudos in advance to my friend Tinnex.

I support the idea of banning all trisikads in the City. These are dangerous, causing heavy traffic. The trisikad drivers do not follow traffic rules and are willful traffic obstructionists. Since Jaraula is not seeking another term, he can be an effective mayor to make such action.

BWCA: A Sustainable Paradigm Shift for CDO´s Uptown Subdivisions
Mike Banos May 17, 2009
http://img154.imageshack.us/img154/7799/cowdpumpstation.jpg (http://img154.imageshack.us/my.php?image=cowdpumpstation.jpg)

It´s ironic how things now stand with the Cagayan de Oro City Water District (COWD) and the eleven residential subdivisions in the city´s so-called "Uptown" area.

The COWD has borrowed funds from the Local Water Utilities Administration (LWUA) to construct a new pipeline running through the area which would serve these and other future subdivisions with water sourced from its bulk water facility in nearby Baungon, Bukidon.

This project would have provided residents with clean, safe drinking water which meets Philippine Drinking Water Standards as well as those of the World Health Organization and preserve the Cagayan de Oro aquifer from which all these subdivisions, plus the COWD are now extracting water at an unsustainable rate.

By this, we mean all that water extracted from the aquifer has led to a "water negative" situation, or in plain English, water is being taken out of the aquifer at a rate greater than its ability to replenish. Thus, as evidenced by the declining production of water from deep wells in this area, it won´t be long before all these Uptown subdivisions would be left high and dry.

Shifting to the COWD could prevent this inevitable consequence but negotiations between COWD and the subdivision developers who have put up the pipeline distribution systems within these subdivisions appear to have reached an impasse over the question of pricing. The developers want to recover the costs of their investments and so with the COWD, which still has to repay LWUA for the loan on the transmission line.

There is a third alternative which may be a way out of this deadlock. In Isabel, Leyte consumers have organized themselves into barangay water consumer associations (BWCA) which purchase water in bulk and oversee its distribution to consumers in their respective areas, and along the way earn additional income for the barangays.

Perhaps such a paradigm could address the situation now facing the COWD and housing projects in Uptown Cagayan de Oro which have developed their own water distribution systems. Instead of LGUs, the various homeowners associations could agree to purchase potable drinking water in bulk from COWD and take responsibility for distributing it to their members. With income earned from such projects, the homeowners associations could soon develop the engineering and financial expertise needed to run a water distributions system and take it off the shoulders of the subdivision developers.

:ohno:

I support the idea of banning all trisikads in the City. These are dangerous, causing heavy traffic. The trisikad drivers do not follow traffic rules and are willful traffic obstructionists. Since Jaraula is not seeking another term, he can be an effective mayor to make such action.

This was a live band inside the Limkitkai mall in Cagayan de Oro City, the "Jollibee" mascot was there to entertain the children.

^^ i think that is the same band we heard at Pulse last week. This is Shandy Band (if i'm not wrong with their band name)...

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY, MINDANAO - I was back in Cagayan de Oro City a.k.a. the City of Golden Friendship last Saturday, May 23, 2009 for the TM Astigfest event at Lim Ket Kai Parking Lot E (right across the Robinson’s Mall CDO) My boys, the members of Cagayan de Oro City-based Southrace Band, were set to perform that night.

The TM ASTIGFEST Cagayan de Oro event, which banners their Republika ng TM battlecry, saw the presence of TM endorser Cesar Montano and the performances of Aegis, Itchyworms and Pinoy Big Brother Celebrity alumnae Budoy and his band Junior Kilat. Naturally, my Southrace boys and I were super excited to be a part of such a big event!

I was also very happy to see Budoy and Jai (former drummer of Cebuano band Urbandub and now drummer cum manager of Junior Kilat) again — I hired this band to perform in three previous events that I organized. Unfortunately, Junior Kilat now has a pretty different member line-up — Gina is no longer the keyboardist (she’s now married and is pretty busy with her business, Jai said), Bangin, the turntablist, is already based in Japan, Arcie, their guitarist is now in Dumaguete and Diana, their former drummer, is already based in the U.S. Still, I’m glad that I was able to meet and work with them. Can’t wait to hire Junior Kilat again soon!

So all right, before I totally digress…Luckily, the weather that Saturday was good (although it was searing hot in the afternoon!). My boys had their sound check at around 4 pm. Lucky for me, too, when I realized that I knew some of the staff members of the sound and lights equipment provider that the organizers hired! So of course my boys were assisted well, the lights during my boys’ actual performance were amazing and we were able to leave our equipment with the crew I tell you, there’s really nothing like being nice to the people that you work with because you’ll never know when you’ll see them and need their help

Anyways, the TM ASTIGFEST event that day was hosted by MOR CDO bigwig Bernie Bitok Bitok and ABS-CBN Kapamilya Mag-TV Na! Ato Ni! host (and one of my photographer brother’s favorite models) Maxine Monasterio. Cesar, meanwhile, was busy touring Gaisano Mall and Lim Ket Kai Mall (actually, my boys and I caught him during his Lim Ket Kai mall visit…people were screaming when Cesar came!). He joined the evening activities at around 9pm. Southrace, Itchyworms and Junior Kilat provided the musical performances early in the evening.

Here are some of the photos this Mindanao photographer (me!) took during the event: (in case you need a Mindanao-based photographer and/or a videographer to cover your weddings, events etc, please don’t hesitate to LEAVE A MESSAGE HERE or contact (+63) 919 238 6575 / (+63) 922 478 5218 - thankies!:

SOUTHRACE: A race to the north
by EJ Talaroc, Sun Star CDO Intern

About two weeks ago, I happened to open up my Friendster account after a year of almost condemning it. Of course, I checked the usual - Who’s viewed me, Messages, Friend Requests etc.

A girl sent me a friend request and of course, I accepted it. Like everybody else, I checked her pictures out.

There’s this one photo album of hers that really caught my attention. It’s called “my uLtim8 cRush.” Right click and open link in new tab then Kaboom!! Southrace.

The faces I saw in that Friendster photo album were Jovy Pestolante, vocalist, Nilo Quitoriano, guitarist, Glenn Oghayon, bassist, and Ches Baconguis, drummer. And how do they tickle their listeners? Words and melodies tightly wrapped with zeal - their music.

Southrace music.

Countless bands dream of making it in the national music scene. Some made it and some just didn’t quite make it.

I admit this may sound cheesy, funny or lame, but there’s truth in that chocolate drink advertisement that says, “Great things start from small beginnings” or when people say that a journey starts with a single step. Yes, Southrace has already braved in its nth step and they don’t plan on stopping.

Although they have not yet reached national recognition, these boys from the south proved that they’re not only dreaming. With two albums, Fresh Wound (2006) and Bisrock Mindanao (2008), they invaded radion stations in Cagayan de Oro, Davao, Koronadal, Malaybalay, Valencia, Dumaguete, Cebu, Boracay and Manila.

“We did all these after getting tired of joining countless band competitions thinking we might make it in Manila,” claims frontman Jovy when the band decided to quit joining such battles.

“Wala man gihapoy taga Mindanao or mga Bisaya nga makadaog,” he further complains as he recalls their Muziklaban 2007 experience where they reached semifinals.

Despite the jokes during the interviews, I can feel their angst against discrimination. “We do not represent Mindanao but we represent ourselves as Mindanaoans. And we would like to show that there’s more to Mindanao than the common misconceptions,” the rest of the members nodded to agree Jovy’s remark. And right away, “We (Bisaya) can do what they can and we may do it even better,” three out of the four guys said it like a chorus except for their guitarist, Nilo, a very silent former seminarian and the only member who is yet to quit his day job for the band, as the other guys already did.

Well, leaving their day jobs is just one of the sacrifices they made.

The very busy Southrace is currently shooting a music video and are recording their third album which is hoped to have a national release.

PROJECT WATCH: Paseo del Rio update (http://cagayandeorodev.wordpress.com/2009/05/27/project-watch-paseo-del-rio-update/)

Paseo del Rio

The proponents of Paseo del Rio, has already asked for an endorsement from the city council relative to their application for accreditation with the Philippine Economic Zone Authority (PEZA). Such application would enable the developer incentives for the development of the project.
The GOPEL Group of Companies led by their CEO Ms. Rafaelita P. Pelaez, have initially announced in September last year to develop their property near Kagay-an Bridge, straddling Barangays Nazareth and Macasandig.

In their pursuit of the project, the Pelaez Family even donated the rotunda of the property to the city. The opening of new vehicle routes in the area has helped decongest traffic in the city proper.

Strategically located at the foot of Kagay-an Bridge that connects to Barangay Carmen, Paseo del Rio will eventually emerge as Cagayan de Oro City’s newest growth area within the urban center in the years to come.

The mixed-use development project was designed by renowned Filipino Architect Felino Palafox, Jr., whose works include Rockwell Center in Makati City, SM City China, Palm Island in Dubai, Al Khobar Complex in Saudi Arabia, Ayala Business Park in Cebu City and the Divine Mercy Shrine in El Salvador, Misamis Oriental, among others.

His firm, Palafox Associates has master planned more than eleven billion square meters of land and has been involved in the architectural design of more than six million square meters in building floor area in 33 countries. The architects, planners, and designers bring together a wealth of experience gained from working around the world.

Palafox Associates is the only planning and design firm in the Philippines that has made it to the London-based World Architecture Magazine’s Top 500, Top 300, and Top 200 Architectural Firms in the World for seven consecutive years. The annual worldwide survey is internationally recognized as the most comprehensive survey of its kind. In 2006, Palafox Associates breaks into the Top 100 and ranked 94th, the only Southeast Asian firm cited in the world’s Top 200 largest practices.

The multi-million Paseo del Rio project will also complement the city government’s “Golden Mile Project“. which is now under construction.

The proposed Paseo del Rio project is designed… “as a place where people can walk, shop and dine in one walkable community…” The concept of Paseo del Rio is a multi-use approach of development in the project site that will boast of high-rise waterfront buildings and global-sized hotels of at least 350 rooms, restaurants, mixed-use commercial and business centers, playground, covered walkways, bicycle lanes, gazebo, rotunda, underground parking, and many amenities and recreational facililities.

In Palafox’s presentation to the City Council last year, he said they only need the flood data of Cagayan de Oro River so everything can be finalized.

In January this year, riverbank portions of the property were submerged with floodwaters causing some concerns if the project would eventually push through. However, in recent radio interviews, City Councilor Emmanuel Abejuela has said the proponents of Paseo del Rio has perfected their mixed use development plan which will inlcude the river protection portion which will connect to the Golden Mile project.

Abejuela said he is optimistic the project would start late this year after the PEZA Accreditation. He also brushed aside reports that the city cannot host hi-rise buildings stating that the city has a robust and solid ground which can accommodate buildings up to 35 storeys high. The only soft portions in the city are located in the Bayabas-Bulua area near the seashore because these are accretion areas.

The construction of the P7.853-billion Laguindingan Airport Project (LADP) is expected to be 60% complete by end of 2009, right on target of January 2012 .

On the construction of the airport’s 4.4-kilometer four-lane access road, the work under Phase 1 (as of May 15, 2009) was already 96.88 percent accomplished while the Phase 2 was 85.32 percent done.

For me Lagindingan will always be laguindingan its up to them kung anong i-dudugtong nila Laguindingan Airport, LIA, New Laguindingan Airport, etc pwede din nila gamitin ang CDO kasi laguindingan airport will replace lumbia which is sa isip ng tao CGY pa rin ang nakasanayan, or CIC? i dont know maraming possibilities.

OO nga but they should cover the creek yong going to ororama kasi pangit tingnan, at saka kung iisipin mo ang ororama is halos part na ng LKKS kagayan ng area occupied by mallberry hotel at gold city coliseum di ba? Dapat talaga may major re-development in this area kasi this is now the new central business district of CDO.
