Prices, supply of veggies in Metro Manila returning to normal levels -- DA (http://www.pna.gov.ph/index.php?idn=0&nid=11&rid=235242)

MANILA, Oct. 14 (PNA) -- Prices of vegetables in Metro Manila are returning to levels before the recent typhoons that hit some parts of the country amid the combined efforts of the Department of Agriculture (DA), Philippine Vegetable Board (PVB), and local government units (LGUs) to stabilize market supply by restoring deliveries from Benguet up north and shipping in extra harvests from as far as Northern Mindanao in the Southern Philippines.

Agriculture Secretary Arthur Yap said on Wednesday that activity at the vegetable trading post in La Trinidad, Benguet started picking up anew with the partial reopening of the Marcos Highway and Naguillan Road, and the instructions for authorities to give priority to vegetable delivery trucks passing through these roads earlier closed due to floods and landslides caused by typhoon "Pepeng."

An initial 40 trucks laden with an estimated cargo of 400 metric tons (MT) of the so-called "chopsuey" vegetables already left Benguet Tuesday afternoon even as another 400-plus MT of assorted vegetables and fruits were also shipped from Cagayan de Oro City on Monday and bound for the National Capital Region (NCR).

Chopsuey vegetables refer to the main ingredients of this popular dish -- carrots, cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, chayote and lettuce.

With this positive development, PVB president Lyndon Tan said that the supply and prices of vegetables are expected to return to normal levels in the next two days.

Yap said after typhoon Pepeng had induced landslides that closed Kennon Road, Marcos Highway and Naguillan Road to traffic last weekend, activities at the La Trinidad trading post ground to a halt as traders stopped buying and farmers refrained from harvesting or bringing their produce there as there were no trucks to deliver their goods to Metro Manila.

He said that Benguet Governor Nestor Fongwan had already informed the farmers and traders that Marcos Highway and Naguillan Road were already partially opened to the public but with specific traffic schedules for vehicles coming up or going down Baguio, and that vegetable delivery trucks have top priority to pass through these arteries.

Tan earlier said that the only problem left at this time was that a number of the farmers could not bring their produce to La Trinidad because of storm-triggered roadblocks from their farms to the trading post.

"But taking note of the progress of the road rehabilitation efforts of the DPWH (Department of Public Works and Highways), the flow of vegetables will normalize very soon," he said.

Meanwhile, DA Region 10 Director Lealyn Ramos said that over 400 MT of assorted vegetables and fruits were already shipped to Manila from Cagayan de Oro.

The shipments included 241 MT of tomatoes, 68 MT of mangoes, 8 MT of pineapple, 45 MT of squash, 8 MT of assorted spices, 34 MT of assorted fruits and vegetables, and another 26 MT of assorted vegetables. (PNA)

Plans for Ayala Mall fronting Gaisano underway, says Mayor Jaraula (http://www.cagayandeoronews-online.com/2009/10/plans-for-ayala-mall-fronting-gaisano.html)

THE Ayala Group is planning on developing a property and build a shopping center in front of the Gaisano Mall on CM Recto Ave.

Mayor Constantino Ja-raula yesterday announced that the Ayalas would start the project anytime soon.

‘‘The groundbreaking would be made before year-end,’’ said Jaraula.

He said he was personally told of the Ayala Group’s plans by former representative Tonyboy Floirendo of Davao whose family made an agreement with the Ayalas. The property, about four hectares, belongs or belonged to the Floirendos.

Meanwhile, Jaraula called on the national government to rationalize the Bureau of Internal Reve-nue’s zonal valuation for real properties.

Jaraula said it would be unfair to fault local governments whenever property owners complain of taxes.

He said the Bureau of Internal Revenue’s zonal valuation––the schedule of fair market values on real property used as basis for the computation of internal revenue taxes––should be taken into account.

He said taxpayers would continue to complain unless the BIR rationalizes the zonal valuation.

Good to know bai that recently CdeO has this construction boom also of infrastructures. Hopefully, more farm to market roads will be constructed. The old ones must be completely paved.

Because of the rapid growth of the city, which I believe that the whole Nazareth and big parts of Macasandig, Camaman-an, Kauwswagan, Carmen, and Gusa will be swallowed by commercial expansion as part of the City Proper 5 years from now.

That's why next year, I'll vote for the visionary one who will build roads in the lasang and in the bukid. :)

Regarding the 2nd rumored mall in Indahag if makaremember pa kayo guys, I think last year there was this personal article from one of the CdeO bloggers who stated that "there is this proposed giant mall in Indahag, which is said bigger "DAW?" than the proposed Ayala mall of our neighbor." The blogger heard it from Mayor Jaraula's interview by one of the AM stations in the city.

Then there was this forumer who had mistakenly pointed his finger to Vice Ganda without even reading the article "siguro" of the blogger because "mas malaki pa daw ang rumored mall sa CM recto kaysa sa kanila." :D

However during one of the interviews of Vice Ganda, he said na "Mas gamay ang ato sa CM Recto kay gamay ra ang lote."

Anyway, maghintay nalang ako sa actual construction sa mga " still rumored malls na yan." :)

Sudlonon siya. I think gituyo ang pagsunog to drive out the informal settlers. The said property is owned by Tamparong family.

Ang dami talagang lupain si Tamparong sa CDO, ano kayang mga plano niya.

there is a road being constructed from Opol going to the new bridge in Puntod. nagtambak man to ang mga tao two weeks ago. its wide and it starts near Roan Beach resort going to Puntod-Kauswagan bridge. ill try to get some pictures of the place so that you guys will be able to imagine what it looks like

That is part of the new ICBR highway together with the long delayed Puntod-Kauswagan bridge.

Emano, Jaraula, and Rodriguez should remain in the service. hehe

Not to mention the CDeO's Comprehensive Land Use Plan, truly the city is taking up shape of its fast pace progress.

UKC Builders is now working on the exterior of the expansion buildings of Mallberry Suites. The metal scaffoldings are already in place. A sample of the finished exterior can be seen on the photo above.

The design looks very different from the existing hotel unless the of course the existing building undergoes a major facelift.

The walls are now being installed for the “Arcade”, an extension of the main building. Roofing materials and accessories are also being put in place. At the rate, a December 2009 opening is unlikely, unless I can see a major “rush” of works.

The bridges only need the polycarbonate roofings to be installed.

Jollibee and RCBC are the first tenants of the Gateway Building of Limketkai & Sons. The fastfood company is set to open their latest branch in the city once the Limketkai Gateway is inaugurated. The familiar Jollibee logo can be seen peeping out of its paper covering. If I’m not mistaken, this will be the 3rd “drive thru” outlet for the fastfood giant after the NHA and Puerto branches.

Cars and other vehicles enter from CM Recto to the western side of the building and then proceed to the back, then turn left to exit toward Limketkai Avenue.

There’s a new and unique restaurant that will soon open along Capistrano Street this city. It’s very unique because aside from the fact that the streamer shows a purple elephant holding a spoon and fork with his trunk (please tell me if you happen to know the name of the establishment), the perimeter is surrounded with planted living palms and other ornamental trees.

In fact, as of this post, more and more plants are being placed around the vicinity of the lot. The pictures you see were taken last week. The main structure of the restaurant is already in the finishing stages but the owner seemed to love landscaping. This lot has been idle for a very long time and it’s just timely for a development to come.

Del Monte Philippines, Inc. seems to be on an expansion mode. The latest is that the company is now expanding its pineapple plantation in the province of Misamis Oriental, specifically in agriculture-rich Claveria town.

Based on the DENR-EMB website, the plantation covers several barangays namely: Ani-e, Bangon-bangon, Cabacungan, Gumaod, Hinaplanan, Kalawitan, Luna, Patrocinio, and Plaridel, all in Claveria town. This is very good news and will employ hundreds or maybe thousands more workers.

ICTSI’s Mindanao Container Terminal Services, Inc. accommodates PCG VTMS (http://www.pna.gov.ph/index.php?idn=0&nid=3&rid=235446)

MANILA, Oct. 15 (PNA) — International Container Terminal Services, Inc. (ICTSI)’s Manila International Container Terminal Services Inc. (MICTSI) has accommodated the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) Northern Mindanao District’s vessel traffic management system (VTMS) at its control tower radar room.

VTMS is a vessel and security monitoring tool used by the PCG.

It advances terminal security and vessel monitoring at the Mindanao Container Terminal (MCT).

MCT is a subsidiary of ICTSI, a leading port management company involved in the operations and development of 19 maritime terminals and port projects in 13 countries worldwide.

MCT earlier reported handling 64,914 twenty equivalent units (TEUs) for the first seven months of the year or higher than 3.5 percent than the 62,676 TEUs recorded in the same period last year.

ICTSI said this shows that MCT, which is located in Tagoloan, Misamis Oriental, is now recovering from the effects of the global financial crisis.

In anticipation of a rosier 2010, cargo-handler MCTSI is installing additional cargo-handling equipment such as reach stackers at the port.

MCT is designed to accommodate an annual throughput of 270,000 TEUs.

In 2008, the port handled 109,028 TEUs, a more than three-fold increase from the 30,000 TEUs handled annually since it was allowed to service containerized cargo. This, after a local court dismissed a case filed by Oro Port — operator of nearby port Cagayan de Oro — three years ago. Oro Port claimed MCT can only service the needs of its own locators.

MICT has earmarked about P2.46 billion this year, the bulk of which will go to the construction of Berth 6 to allow it to cater to post-panamax vessels.

For over 20 years, ICTSI has been the private sector partner of choice for world-class trade facilitation in the economies it serves. (PNA)

Giant singkamas sparks frenzy in CDO (http://www.abs-cbnnews.com/classified-odd/10/15/09/giant-singkamas-sparks-frenzy-cdo)

abs-cbnNEWS.com | 10/15/2009 1:52 PM

MANILA – Market goers in Cagayan de Oro City are abuzz with excitement over the freshest and biggest harvest pick in Cogon Market—a giant singkamas (yam bean, native turnip or jicama) weighing more than 10 kilograms.

The giant singkamas, which was bought from a supplier in Sultan Kudarat, weighed 10.6 kilos.

According to vegetable distributor Minie Poquita, she has never seen a singkamas so large and heavy in her 10 years of selling vegetables.

Poquita added that she even mistook the singkamas to be another vegetable.

“Tingala lagi mi dili man siguro ni singkamas. Kalabasa man siguro ning naa sa sako (Nagtaka talaga kami, akala naming kalabasa ang nakita naming sa sako),” she told ABS-CBN News.

She also revealed that she has no plans of selling the singkamas no matter how much the buyer is offering to pay for it.

According to the Department of Agriculture, the weight of Cagayan de Oro’s giant singkamas is half of Indonesia’s world record of having a singkamas (known in Indonesia as bengkuang) weighing 20 kilos. -- Report from Rod Bolivar, ABS-CBN News Northern Mindanao

Man bikes 4,000 miles for cancer-survivor son (http://www.abs-cbnnews.com/lifestyle/10/06/09/man-bikes-4000-miles-cancer-survivor-son)

ZAMBOANGA CITY - Gilbert Dizon, a 47-year-old cyclist, has been traveling around the Philippines on his bike for the last month and a half.

Dizon arrived in Zamboanga City on Sunday, after biking more than 4,000 kilometers along a route that started from Manila, then Ilocos Norte, Pampanga, Cagayan, Isabela, and down to Cebu, Bohol, Surigao del Sur, and Zamboanga City.

"Instead of a 'Visita iglesia' in 7 [churches], I saw more than 70 churches, and cities to add," he said in an interview with Zamboanga reporters.

Unlike other cyclists who promote environmental advocacies on long-haul bike tours, Dizon has a more personal reason for touring the "Philippine Loop."

He said he has a son who was diagnosed with Langerhans cell hystiocytosis, a rare blood disease where abnormal cells from the bone marrow proliferate in the body.

After his son recovered from nine years of chemotherapy, Dizon promised himself that he would "live life to the fullest."

For him, this meant touring the country so he could share his story with the people he meets along the way.

Dizon, a history teacher from Cagayan de Oro City, said he only carries a backpack, a pair of shorts and underwear, a pair of shirts, water, and a little money throughout his tour.

He is often helped along by friendly locals "Meeting people, especially in the provinces, I realized they deserve respect as much as every other person.

They helped me in so many ways...even with their meager [resources]," he said.

Dizon noted through his travels that though people vary in dialects or cultures, they also "share the same origins, hopes, and dreams."

He is set to return to Manila along the same route, and vowed to repeat his bike tour when he reaches the age of 50.

"Everyone can do it. One does not have to be an athlete. One only had to see what they should see," he said.

Dizon chronicles his journey, which he dubs as the "longest unsupported bicycle adventure in the Philippines", in an online journal at www.crazyguyonabike.com. The entries span 46 days. Report by Dyborrhae Jewel M. Reyes, ABS-CBN Zamboanga.

I WOK’d in CDO.
September 12, 2009, 3:36 pm
Filed under: WOK in MINDANAO | Tags: asia, philippines, cagayan de oro, cdo, travels

September 19, 2008 – this date marks the first year anniversary of our Cagayan de Oro adventure together with my HTGmates. And what a great way to pay tribute to our wild adventure down south is to blog about it here on WOK.

Cagayan de Oro, which known as the City of Golden Friendship is also the gateway to Northern Mindanao and not to mention a destination for those seeking a wet and wild adventure. The Lumbia Airport perched on the mountainous area of CDO is the starting point for those who plan to visit. Taxis and Jeepneys are available all-day to transport you to the downtown proper. Cagayan de Oro City is one of the busiest urban metropolis in the country, but has this rural feel in its surrounding areas.

Our visit in CDO wouldn’t be complete, as our main purpose is to try out the famous White Water Rafting Adventure in the CDO River. The Cagayan de Oro River is known for its powerful rapids cascading over rocks and boulders, perfect for a bumpy and heart-pumping ride. As beginners we took the 14-rapids adventure which took us almost 3-hours to complete and we were asking for more. The whole experience gave us an adrenaline rush as we traversed the wild and breathtaking obstacles of the river. After successfully passing through a wild rapid, we would raise our paddles and shout “High Five” – a sigh of relief and accomplishment. We would occasionally stop our raft at the calm part of the river – a perfect spot to jump from the raft and swim and enjoy the picturesque view of rock formations and if lucky giddy monkeys swinging from one tree to another. Unfortunately, during our visit the water is not “white” because it was the rainy season when we visited but still the whole breathtaking and adrenaline-filled ride is all worth it!

HIGH FIVE!

HIGH FIVE!

Unfortunately, during our last year’s visit in CDO we weren’t able to visit Divisoria by night, so I made it a point that during my recent visit in CDO I would stop-over and check-out the place. Divisoria, also known as the Golden Friendship Park is a normal park during the day where you can check-out various landmarks and statues of famous people who made a major contribution in Cagayan de Oro. But during Friday and Saturday nights, Divisoria is a bustling gimmick place known as the Night Café and Market where beer is cheap and local grilled foods is a must-try. Ihaw-Ihaw or grilled food stalls line-up the park and definitely their BBQ is a must-try. But aside from being a weekend hang-out place, Divisoria also transforms into an open shopping area or tiangges where great bargains can be found in ukay-ukays and pirated DVDs is amass.

Bigby's famous Baby Back Ribs

Bigby’s (located at the Rosario Arcade, beside Limketkai Mall)

Don’t be deceived by its western interiors similar to TGIF (Thank God It’s Friday) because Bigbys is a homegrown brand from Cagayan de Oro. The restaurant’s interiors resemble a museum of sort with maps as wall decals and various memorabilia from different countries are installed in their walls. As a first timer, I tried out their famous Baby Back Ribs. I must admit that I am not a foodie and I would eat anything grilled, so I’ll give the meal 4 out 5 stars. I was surprised that the serving was quite huge and can be actually shared by two, and I found out why Bigby’s was called as such, because they really offer BIG servings of delicious meals. For a generous serving and an affordable price of P200+ it was all worth it. By the way, Bigby’s now has a branch in SM Megamall.

Sunburst Chicken

Another food that I can eat over and over again is Chicken, so I tried out Sunburst Chicken located at the Rosario Arcade beside the Limketkai Mall. The restaurant boasts its country style chicken obvious with its homey country-style interiors. Their chicken tastes like Pan Cake House Country-style chicken but the price is really affordable compared to the previous. Best eaten with Worcester sauce and catsup, can’t wait to eat in Sunburst again!

Buthcher’s Best BBQ (located near Xavier University, CDO)

A haven for BBQ lovers like me. I learned that the idea behind the business of Butcher’s Best BBQ started out as a thesis of Business Management students in Xavier University in CDO, it became successful and their staple BBQs instantly became a hit with Xavier students. They opened a branch near Xavier University and other branches scattered in CDO so everyone can enjoy their tasty grilled BBQs.

"Aba Ginoong Maria, Napupuno ka ng grasya. Kaunting barya lang po sa umaga."

I took this photo after visiting the St. Augustine Cathedral. I was struck by this old lady sitting outside the chapel, she asked for some coins and after I dropped a few in her trusty plastic cup I asked if I can take a photo of her. She immediately agreed with glee and I was surprised that she even striked a pose raising her cup and smiled. After I reviewed the photo, I realized that it resembled a picture of Mother Mary with the sun-burst metal grills behind the woman.

Motorella

Travelling around downtown CDO is easy after all. Just ride the motorella, a six-seater tricycle, pay P5.00 (way cheaper than tricycle fares in Manila) and enjoy the ride. Don’t forget to say “lugar lang” which means “para or stop” when you’ve reached your destination.

I WOK'd in CDO.

If there’s one thing I would like to try when I next visit CDO, it’s the 24-rapids course of the White River Rafting and the zipline at the Macahambus park. For now, I will be just nostalgic with the adrenaline-filled adventure we had last year and the gastronomic adventure I had during my recent trip. Till then, Cagayan.

The one that is called "Bonifacio Monument" is not a Bonifacio Monument. That is a monument for the Heroes of the Battle of Agusan Hill; May 14,1900.

Sorry to interrupt this. But i'm intrigued about that "Bonifacio Monument." From what i know, that is not a monument for Andres Bonifacio, but for those heroes of Agusan (here in CdO)...those battles our own Kagay-anons fought here in our land. Those bones that are there are also the bones of those who participated on it.

I agree, that's not Bonifacio Monument but Heroes of Agusan Monument.

The City gov't should change the statue because it looks like a Bonifacio statue you see all over the country.

cheers,

Another jobs bridging, internship program opens at SM Oro (http://www.pia.gov.ph/?m=12&r=r10&y=&mo=&fi=p091015.htm&no=74)

by Rutchie Cabahug-Aguhob

Cagayan de Oro City (15 October) -- Another jobs bridging and internship program will be held by the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) at SM Car Park in Upper Carmen, this city, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., on October 16, 2009.

Regional Director Edwin Gatinao of TESDA-10 said the event will serve as a venue to match skills available with jobs in demand both at the local and overseas market.

It is also done to show support to the unified celebration of the National Week for Overcoming Extreme Poverty (NWOEP) on October 17-23, Stand Up and Take Action Against Poverty on October 16-18, and World Food Day on October 16, Gatinao said.

Among others, activities of the day will include interview / job matching of Pangulong Gloria Scholarship (PGS) graduates and other job seekers through the Blue Desk Program, profiling of clients and livelihood skills demonstration for food processing, cell phone repair, haircut and manicure, etc.

The observance of the NWOEP is pursuant to the proclamation of Pres. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo that aims to unite the support of all sectors of society in the fight against extreme poverty.

Meanwhile, SUTA is a 3-day campaign of the United Nations to provide an opportunity for development partners to gain a deeper understanding of poverty, development and food security issues and stand up and take action in support of poverty alleviation and achievement of the UN Millennium Development Goals (MDG).

Likewise, the WFD, with this year's theme of "Achieving Food Security in Times of Crisis" is a worldwide event designed to increase awareness, understanding and informed year-round action to alleviate hunger. (PIA 10) [top]

Siguro nga may billboard na ilagay dyan sa taas yung gawing tapat ng LKK Ave. source of revenue yan kaya 99% yan ang ilagay. Mindanao Business Council sets power summit (http://www.pna.gov.ph/index.php?idn=0&nid=3&rid=235632)

ZAMBOANGA CITY, Oct. 16 (PNA) -- The Mindanao Business Council (MinBC) has scheduled a one-day power summit which will be held next month in Cagayan de Oro City.

MinBC Chairman Vicente Lao said the summit aimed to bring together the concerned stakeholders in the power industry to invest in Mindanao.

Lao said they will also invite the power sector regulators to know what is needed in investing in the power industry.

“There is really a need for us to invite investors in Mindanao especially in the power generator sector,” Lao said.

He said Mindanao will start experiencing power shortages starting next year citing the power “supply and demand turf” has already met.

He said Mindanao's power shortage is expected to balloon to 400 megawatts by the year 2014.

A particular place should be generating power of 13 buffer supply of electricity, according to Lao.

“When you say buffer, it means that whatever you produce, you should produce 13 percent more than what you need so that if something goes wrong in one of the plants you still have a buffer,” he explained. (PNA)

P14.1 M construction of major drainage system went high gear in Cagayan de Oro City (http://www.pna.gov.ph/index.php?idn=0&nid=2&rid=235620)

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY, Oct. 16 (PNA) -– The city government of Cagayan de Oro is fast tracking the construction of five major drainage system projects worth P14,162,559.05 million.

City Mayor Constantino G. Jaraula ordered the city’s engineering division and other concerned department heads to fast-track the construction in order to address the inadequate drainage system which greatly contributed to the overflowing of drainage and open canals along the main thoroughfare of the city, particularly at Divisoria area and other low-lying areas of this frontier city of Northern Mindanao region.

These on-going constructions are the construction of drainage along T. Neri Street from Burgos Street to Capistrano Street (Phase 1) amounting over P2.20 million; drainage along T. Neri Street from Capistrano Street to Apolinar Velez Street (Phase 2) at P1,408,068.14; drainage along T. Neri Street from Apolinar Velez Street to Corrales Street (Phase 3) totaling P1,287,348.48 million; drainage system along Hayes Street from Corrales Street to City Hall with a project cost of more than P4.57 million and the drainage system along Yacapin Street from Corrales Street towards Cagayan de Oro River amounting to more than P4.68 million.

“We must redouble our effort to complete this major drainage system,” Mayor Jaraula said.

The city government is also allocating P5 million for massive tree planting program around the city as part of intensified reforestation and greening project.

Mayor Jaraula ordered the City Budget Office and the City Treasurer's Office to set aside the P5 million allocation for the project. (PNA)

Three events highlight this year’scelebration of Business Week in Cagayan
de Oro. There is the twin exposition at the Limketkai Mall, the 2009 CREBA
National Convention and Housing Fair Exhibit and the Oro BEST Expo, an
annual event spearheaded by the Cagayan de Oro Chamber of Commerceand Industry (Oro Chamber), both slated on October 8-10, 2009. A third event,
the Tinnex Jaraula Cup Golf Tournament, will be held on October 9-11 at the Pueblo de Oro Golf & Country Club. Pueblo de Oro will be taking an active
role in marking business week. Apart from hosting the Tinnex Cup, PODC will
have booths at the Housing Fair and the Oro BEST Expo to display the best of
the Township, including new projects such as The Courtyards, Primavera and Forest View Homes, as well as the other premier developments in the Pueblo de Oro Township.
The hosting of said events came at a time when Cagayan de Oro has been growing rapidly even in the midst of the economic crisis gripping the nation. Last year, its economy grew by 5.3%, outpacing many cities and making it the most resilient economy in the Philippines. Now considered the country’s river rafting capital, tourism and the economy of the city are expected to get an even greater boost with the completion of the Laguindingan International Airport in 2011 and the resumption and full implementation of the Hanjin Shipyard Building project in Tagoloan, Misamis Oriental anticipated as soon as the world economy improves. The said project is expected to generate at least 40,000 jobs of which 15,000 consist of administrative personnel and 25,000 are
welders and other skilled workers.

They may look at these investments as outside CdeO BUT the larger community which is CdeO is always the beneficiary of these projects due to its proximity. People who will work in Villanueva will always go to CdeO to shop and unwind. Malaking tulong yun sa ekonomiya ng CdeO.

Though investment wise, it is poured in another LGU but the effects towards CdeO is big. Alangan naman sa laing dapit mo shop og mo unwind ang mga families aning workers? Di ba? By the way, these investments complement the economy of CdeO. Surely, mas daghan na pud na families ang mopalit ani og mga lote sa CdeO for their family while their husbands work at Hanjin. Alangan naman put ang 15,000 administrative personnel sa laing airport mosakay, sa Laguindingan gyud. And between both projects is CdeO and nowhere else. Kani ang tan-awon nato bah. No doubt, CdeO will speed up more than it is now with these developments.

Let us not focus on the location of investment pouring but on the post construction effect towards Normin's main city.

In the long run, makikita din ito nga international investors in the future. might be the 13th or 14th branch? The jollibee at Gateway will open 24 hours kaya? kasi yan man ang purpose ng gateway based on the previous article, foodchain, drugtore, coffeeshoppe etc.

---->LOL

Because one forumer said one time na:

Bakit naman maging progressive ang CdeO eh sa Tagoloan at Villanueva naman yung proposed Hanjin? :D

Isa pa yung Laguindingan airport with international standard na di naman truly international eh ay sa Laguindingan lang naman? :D

Or bakit ba inaangkin ng CdeO ang big projects na yun eh outside CdeO naman yun? :D

Let us imagine there is no Cagayan de Oro.

Will there be an international container port?
will there be factories?
will there be malls?
will there be a reason for industrial estates?
will there be an international airport?

The reason why people created this developments is because of Cagayan de Oro. :bash:

So mas mahal gyud diay ang primavera condo kaysa ayala alegria sub.

Baka eto ung basehan ng isang "tamala" na writer na nagsasabi na, "Bakit MAS IMPROVE ang Northern MIndanao region eh wala naman masyadong condo dun?"

Siguro naisip niya na MAS SOSSY or "UPSCALE" yung condo kaysa subdivision. :D

what i meant was that mahal ang primavera pero mas mahal pa gihapon ang alegria. mahal ang primavera in a sense that you wont own the lot because its a condo. the price of a single cheapest lot in alegria is Php3M. all high end subds have one basic rule; the cost of the house must be at least the same as the cost of the lot. if you bought a lot that is worth Php3M, then the house must also cost at least Php3M. meaning, the house and lot in alegia must have a minimum cost of Php6M. the 3 bedroom condo in primavera has an estimated cost of Php4.3M which means alegria is still more expensive but the bottom line is you get to own the lot. dili man kaayo dako ilang difference in terms of cost but in the subd you get to keep the lot. the next generation can utilize it when the time comes. kung sa alegria, sikat man gyud ka paminawon kay ayala man. sa amo man gyud kay kung gamay nalang ang difference sa cost dayon mas advantage ang pikas, didto nalang mi mokuha or mopalit sa mahal basta kay naa kay makuha at the end. para nako, mas tsada mopalit sa subd kaysa condo but if you have the money, then get both.

Filipino gets accolades for returning $320,000 in Jeddah (http://globalnation.inquirer.net/news/breakingnews/view/20091017-230607/Filipino-gets-accolades-for-returning-320000-in-Jeddah)

Advertisement JEDDAH—A Filipino has been praised for returning SR1.2 million (about $320,000) that he found outside a cash machine to its rightful owner in Tabuk last week.

“I’m very happy. I am proud of myself that in spite of it being such a huge amount, I didn’t feel like taking money which does not belong to me,” said Lark Michael B. Colegado, 34, from Tacloban and Misamis Oriental in the Philippines.
Colegado, a maintenance technician in Jeddah, said he was sent to Tabuk on October 6 to carryout maintenance. It was when he was looking for a place to sit at an ATM machine to carryout work that he found a small box containing the cash.

Colegado immediately informed his superiors and the money was returned to its owner.

“I could have been richer if I kept that money, but I was raised by my family to be an honest person so it did not enter my mind, although I was really scared when I found the box,” he said.

He also informed his Pakistani helper who was with him about the incident and told his bosses on returning to Jeddah. In an e-mail from his managers, Colegado was told that they were proud to have him in their team and thanked him for doing what is right.
The Filipino community invited Colegado to a function at Laparilla restaurant to felicitate him. Leaders of different Filipino organizations also attended the event and handed Colegado a certificate of appreciation.

“What Colegado did is very timely. At this point in time when we have lots of Filipinos facing financial problems in this country, here comes a man returning a very big amount of money he found with no regret,” said Filcom leader Jauhari Usman.

“Honestly speaking, the huge amount found was really tempting. If anybody finds such an amount, I do not know what he or she would do. What Colegado did is really admirable and has boosted my morale as a Filipino,” he added.

“In spite of the very bad situation in our country, we can still see some people like Colegado doing a great thing and it is a real honor for all Filipinos. It shows the world that we are a trustworthy people,” said Rudy Castro, chairman of the Overseas Filipino Workers Cooperative Council.

“We are proud of you and, on behalf of the Philippine Institute of Certified Public Accountants (PICPA) and the Filipinos here in Jeddah, congratulate you. Your kindness shines in spite of the flood left by Ondoy and Pepeng,” said Joey Villanueva, chairman of PICPA.

“I proudly tell you that I’m proud to be a Filipino because of you,” Villanueva said.

Police report decline of crimes
Saturday, October 17, 2009

THREE weeks after a rejuvenated anti-crime campaign, crime incidence in the city has reportedly declined according to statistics furnished by the Cagayan de Oro City Police Office (Cocpo).

Based on the weekly monitoring report coming from 10 police stations in the city, 34 cases of crimes against property were recorded from August 31 to September 6, 2009 and another 30 from September 21 to 27.

Nearly three weeks after the start of the anti-crime campaign last September 26, however, acting city police director Noel Armilla said crime has dropped from a high of 34 reported cases to 26 as of the October 5 to 11 period.

But Armilla is refraining from giving his men the proverbial pat on the back in spite of the improved record saying what matters above all is public opinion.

"Let the people talk on how our policemen are doing. It is still a long process and a never ending course of action," Armilla said.

Policemen on Thursday rounded up another 57 suspected criminals in its fourth round of saturation drives.

Suspected criminals accused of murder, rape and attempted murder were among the latest to fall to the police dragnet.

Various bladed weapons and 15 undocumented motorcycles have also been seized, Armilla said.

Macanhan in Barangay Carmen was the target of the police operation last Thursday evening after the station commander of Carmen Police Station reported the

presence of illegal activities and suspected criminals in the area, Armilla said.

"It is our hope that by doing this, ma-engganyo ang katawhan to participate in the campaign because we badly need the support of the community," Armilla said.

For his part, Police Superintendent Antonio Montalba, deputy police director, said he is confident that the public views the anti-crime campaign positively

especially since the police have observed proper procedures during operations.

Montalba said the campaign also aimed at raising people's awareness against any form of criminal activity, aside from gaining public support for the crackdowns on criminals.

"Maybe if naay negative perception naa lang sa 15 percent but so far wala mi makadawat og negative reaction sa atong saturation drive," Montalba said. (ALR)

Speaking of Mindanao Container Port (International Container Port), I remember pa that one time there were these two forumers na naging masayang masaya at napaiyak pa sa tuwa dahil in just few months lumalaki ang kita ng Mindanao Container Port kaysa CdeO port. Dahil diyan eh may rival na ang CdeO port.

Now let us be realistic that these Mindanao Container Port was realized because HINDI NA MAKAYA ng CdeO Port sa daming barko na nagdadock. The question is bakit naman maging rival eh COMPLIMENT naman yan sa CdeO port? Sa katunayan pa nga eh it is just the espansion of CdeO port, which makes the port city the leading transhipment hub in this island. Make sense?

You know what sang-ayon talaga ako sa iya speaking of location na ang Bukidnon.

Anyway, medyo harsh ra siguro ka kaayo bai when you spoke about "heart of Mindanao" ang CdeO kasi DAPAT NORTHERN MINDANAO ra ta oi. Let's share naman to others. :D

But when it comes to the leading propeller of progress particularly in NorMin region, it is CdeO. Let's say it makes CdeO the heart of NorMIN, NOT IN MINDANAO ha (walay magbuot sa ako) because like a heart, it pumps blood to be distributed to vital organs of the body. In other words, CdeO being the heart of progress in NormIn spills progress to provinces and cities of Normin.

Sa yanong tao nga termino, sa ato pa para sa mga tao nga walang trabaho di lang sa CdeO kundi sa NorMin sab, ang bago og malaking mga investment sa CdeO ay nakahatag og trabaho sa kanila. :)

yeah i noticed that were was an under construction building beside HP building but i was unable to take pictures because it was raining hard by that time. fortunately, i was only able to take pictures primavera and the phoenix gas station. as for the uptown condotel, there were people coming out of the place at around 5:15pm when i passed the area. i guess they were working there and there was already a concrete road within the uptown condotel premises.

Marathon: Kenyans sweep 1st QC men's 42K Int'l marathon (http://www.pna.gov.ph/index.php?idn=0&nid=5&rid=235891)
By Lily O Ramos

MANILA, Oct. 18 (PNA)--Three Kenyan marathoners scored a clean sweep of the men's 42.195-kilometer international category with Sammy Kiptoo capturing first place by logging in with a time of two hours 30 minutes and 10 seconds and going home with a check of P300,000 in the 1st Quezon City International Marathon Sunday morning at the Quezon Memorial Circle.

Kiptoo was followed by Samuel Tarustoo (2:30.38) and Elly Belt (2:30.51) for second and third place, respectively.

The 22-year-old, fish slim Kiptoo, who lives near Nairobi, Kenya, said he enjoyed the chase with little hills and curves along the route.

"I'm an athlete who trains most of the time in my country. I arrived in the Philippines late Saturday and plunged into the race this morning," said Kiptoo who ran his first-ever full marathon in a foreign country this year and plans to come back should he get invited again.

"It was easy and nice. The weather wasn't hot and the view was clear with green trees along the highway," he said, as he struggled to explain himself to mediamen.

The local contest was bannered by the Sabal brothers of Cresenciano and Elmer Sabal of Cagayan de Oro City with a 1-2 finish at 2:32.50 and 2:30.38 clockings, respectively. Bernardo Desamito was third with 2:39.27.

Cresenciano was last week's Milo Marathon champion. Asked if he could beat the Kenyans' record, he readily answered, "Why not? If only I wasn't injured and still feeling the effects of the Milo marathon, I could have easily outdistanced them."

He said his best time for the 42-K is 2:21, while the best of the Kenyan's mark is 2:30. "We will try again next year; sans injury or any unfortunate incident, I can come up with a better time."

In the international distaff side, it was Kenya's Doreen Nduku Kitaka on top at 2:58.55, Sarah Jepchirp Maito in second (3:12.42) and Ileen Mentivo (3:23.57) in third.

Kitaka said she broke away from the rest within the 22-K range after encountering a short downhill trail at La Mesa Dam.

The 32-year-old mother of a five-year-old girl and a three-year-old boy in the outskirts of Nairobi felt the race became much easier afterward with no challenger posing a threat.

Kitaka, whose husband works in a back, went home richer with P175,000 prize and wants to return here to defend her title next year.

"I take running seriously. I train at least two hours every morning and an hour in the afternoon to make myself flexible and healthy at all times. The Philippines is a beautiful country. I will go home with nice memories," she said.

Quezon City Mayor Feliciano "Sonny" Belmonte and officers of some sponsors awarded the prizes to the winners; with Belmonte even conducting interviews on the runners and promising to escalate himself to the 10-K category in 2010.

Singapore's executive runner Richard Ng participated in the 5-K race for fun and brought along with him some donation for the typhoon "Ondoy" victims.

"We sympathize with your people. I hope that with the little contribution that we pooled, those suffering from the tragic aftermath will be helped," said Ng. (PNA)

MinBC sets power summit in C. de Oro (http://www.goldstardailynews.com/content.php?sectionid=3&id=6876)
Updated October 17-18, 2009 12:00 AM
The Mindanao Business Council (MinBC) has scheduled a one-day power summit which will be held next month in Cagayan de Oro City.

He said Mindanao’s power shortage is expected to balloon to 400 megawatts by the year 2014.

A particular place should be generating power of 13 buffer supply of electricity, according to Lao.

“When you say buffer, it means that whatever you produce, you should produce 13 percent more than what you need so that if something goes wrong in one of the plants you still have a buffer,” he explained. -PNA

Cagayan de Oro fast-tracks P14.1-M drainage system (http://www.mb.com.ph/articles/225279/cagayan-de-oro-fasttracks-p141m-drainage-system)
By MIKE U. CRISMUNDO

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY – Mainly due to the continuous calamities hitting various parts of the country, the city government here is fast tracking the construction of five major drainage system projects worth P14,162,559.05.

City Mayor Constantino G. Jaraula ordered the city’s engineering division and other concerned department heads to fast-track the construction in order to address the inadequate drainage system which greatly contributed to the overflowing of drainage and open canals along the main thoroughfare of the city, particularly at the Divisoria area and other low-lying areas of this city.

These on-going constructions are the implementation of drainage system along T. Neri Street from Burgos to Capistrano Streets (Phase 1) amounting P2,208,396.13 million; drainage along T. Neri Street from Capistrano to Apolinar Velez Streets (Phase 2) costing P1,408,068.14 million; drainage along T. Neri Street from Apolinar Velez to Corrales Streets (Phase 3) totaling P1,287,348.48 million; drainage system along Hayes Street from Corrales Street to City Hall area with a project cost of P4,578,257.29 million; and the drainage system along Yacapin Street from Corrales Street towards the Cagayan de Oro River amounting to P4,680,489.01 million.

“We must redouble our efforts to complete this major drainage system,” added Jaraula.

Meanwhile, the city government is setting aside an allocation of P5 million for massive tree planting program around the city.

The city government has intensified the implementation of massive tree planting and reforestation project.

Jaraula ordered the City Budget Office and the City Treasurer’s Office to set aside the allocation intended for the greening project.

While he expressed the city government’s deep sympathy to the typhoon victims’ predicament, Jaraula underscored the importance of massive tree planting and reforestation in upland areas in order to mitigate the adverse effects of flooding.

“Greening our vacant lands is a big factor and I urge everyone to plant more trees in their respective lands,” said the city’s chief executive.

Though admitted that it is hard to go against the wrath of nature, Jaraula pointed out that the best thing to lessen the impact of damage brought about by flooding is through preventive intervention.

Jaraula recounted the devastating flood that hit this city last January where he cited the need to divert the flow of the main drainage system in the city directly to the Cagayan de Oro River.

Mayor Jaraula seeks P5M funds for massive greening project (http://themindanaocurrent.blogspot.com/2009/10/in-wake-of-2-devastating-typhoons-in.html)

In the wake of the sad plight of thousands of victims of typhoons Ondoy and Pepeng, the City Government of Cagayan de Oro will intensify the implementation of massive tree planting and reforestation project.

City Mayor Constantino G. Jaraula ordered the City Budget Office and the City Treasurer’s Office to set aside an allocation of P5.0 million intended for the greening project.

While he expressed the city government’s deep sympathy to the typhoon victims’ predicament, Mayor Jaraula underscored the importance of massive tree planting and reforestation in upland areas in order to mitigate the adverse effects of floodings.

Though admitting that it is hard to go against the wrath of nature, Mayor Jaraula pointed out that the best thing to lessen the impact of damage brought about by floodings is through ‘preventive intervention’.

As the City Chief Executive recounted the devastating floods that hit the city in January this year, he cited the need to ‘re-orient’ the main drainage system in Corrales Street by diverting its flow of water directly to the Cagayan de Oro River.

Presently, the City Government of Cagayan de Oro is fast tracking the construction of five major drainage system projects worth P14.1 million in order to address the inadequate drainage system which greatly contributed to the overflowing of drainage and open canals along Divisoria area and other low-lying areas of the city.

These are the construction of drainage along T. Neri Street from Burgos Street to Capistrano Street (Phase 1) amounting P2,208,396.13 million; drainage along T. Neri Street from Capistrano Street to Apolinar Velez Street (Phase 2) costing P1,408,068.14 million; drainage along T. Neri Street from Apolinar Velez Street to Corrales Street (Phase 3) totaling P1,287,348.48 million; drainage system along Hayes Street from Corrales Street to City Hall with a project cost of P4,578,257.29 million and the drainage system along Yacapin Street from Corrales Street towards Cagayan de Oro River amounting to P4,680,489.01 million. My Uptown Malling Experience at SM City Cagayan de Oro (http://www.cagayandeoronews-online.com/2009/10/my-uptown-malling-experience-at-sm-city.html)

By Joel C. Escol

I get excited of my malling experience at SM City Cagayan de Oro because it would be first time for me to use my credit card. Yes, my credit card at Bancard. I also get excited as the mall has all what I need – from groceries, food, dry goods, clothing, shoes and all. My God! I was kind of puzzled how I can minimize my shopping experience budget in the country’s biggest and famous mall that is now in the “City of Golden Friendship.” In my second thought, I am afraid I can become a lavish spender because of my credit card. However, I also thought this is already my chance to shop what I badly need to purchase. I knew it would only take me several minutes to purchase what goods are in my mind now.

Then I said to myself “P20,000.00 would be enough for this first ever shopping experience in the country’s biggest chain of malls.” So I hurriedly visit the shoes shop store and purchase my first ever expensive pair of shoes. Alas! The prize of the Merrell shoes is P8,000.00. I realized I am only buying a shoes worth a thousand or below and now it’s P8,000? Okay fine. I want to feel being rich even in a single day and experience financial freedom. So, my worries about budget are suddenly gone. It’s not a dream anyway, it’s for real! Then after I bought my first ever expensive and branded shoes. I also bought the famous clothing lines of Express, Lacost, Champion, etc. I bought all the colors of the shirts. My beloved wife Vangie also bought hers and my son Vanjoe his famous Play Station 3.

Exactly six in the evening we had our sumptuous dinner at Jollibee. I told my son we have to eat at the most expensive restaurant but a kid as he is he preferred to dine at Jollibee, maybe because this is the most appropriate for him being a kid. I remember that when he was a kid we would always visit SM Cagayan de Oro and dined at Jollibee because this is all where he wants to eat. In fact, we all have the freebies that Jollibee gave and most of them were Disneyland and Marvel characters. My son would always love the X-men characters.

Honestly, SM City Cagayan de Oro has become our relaxation place because it is only a minute ride from our housing unit at Oro Habitat for Humanities in Barangay Canitoan.

With my malling experience using my credit card I can always say the rich and well off families are really enjoying their lives. They have all the leisure of life. To experience and feel like rich is really a wonderful experience at SM City cagayan de Oro. Now I realized that even if you are only an average family you can still enjoy life at this mall in Cagayan de Oro.

Financial freedom would always mean living your life to the fullest. I was there once. How I wish it would be all the years of my life.

^^Hay naku, di dapat tularan ng marami ito...masaya maging one day millionaire oo, pero it is indeed very impractical in the end mahirap magbayad ng utang dyan kung isang ordinary employee ka lang at ang problema ang laki ng mga interes ng mga banko sabi nga ng mga katrabaho ko dati dyan sisibank daw:bash:

At saka di naman kasi importante na magka credit card sa pinas ang isang tao unlike sa ibang bansa like here in US na lets say 90-95% yata ng tao may credit card kasi yan ang basihan dito..... yong credit history mo pag may plano kang bumili ng bahay, kotse, etc.

(PNA)

how do you compare the air quality at this marathon venue compared to Manila T2 airport? Everytime I exit the plane at T2 I can feel the stuffy air quality. It gets worst once you exit the terminal...... I don't think I can still do outdoor exercise with that kind of air....

The Cooperative Development Authority (CDA) in Region 10 is putting up a community frequency modulated (FM) radio station in Cagayan de Oro City. This was announced by CDA 10 Regional Director Orlando Ravanera during the cooperative pre-membership education seminar (PMES) for the members of the Population and Development Press Corps of Cagayan de Oro City (PDPC-CDO), very recently. Aimed at boosting the information, education, communication and advocacy efforts of CDA-registered cooperatives in the region, the said FM radio station shall be housed at the soon-to-be constructed Regional Cooperative Training Center here in the city.

The community FM radio concept was introduced by TAMBULI UNESCO Project Manager Louie Tabing in conference with cooperative leaders of Region 10 at CDA 10 conference room, early this year. A community radio station is “for the people, about the people and by the people” according to Tabing, who co-founded the Philippine Federation of Rural Broadcasters (PFRB) in the 70s. Ravanera is confident that the concept, which has already been implemented and proven effective in Zamboanga del Sur and Davao Oriental, will significantly improve the life of cooperatives in this part of the country.

Xavier hands Ateneo 2 losses (http://www.mb.com.ph/articles/225414/xavier-hands-ateneo-2-losses)
October 19, 2009, 3:52pm

GENERAL SANTOS CITY — Xavier School of Cagayan de Oro nipped two Ateneo teams over the weekend to claim the top spot in the Passerelle division of the Milo-sponsored SBP-Passerelle twin tournaments Mindanao regional finals at the General Santos City gymnasium.

Xavier’s biggest win so far came at the expense Ateneo de Zamboanga, which it beat, 65-64.

Ateneo de Zamboanga absorbed its second straight defeat in as many matches.

It was the same story when Xavier crushed Ateneo de Davao, 61-58, for its first win earlier.

Ateneo de Davao later made up for the loss when it demolished Notre Dame of Dadiangas, 76-53, for a 1-1 (win-loss) slate, the same mark of its victim, which dealt Ateneo de Zamboanga’s second defeat, 67-55.

In the Small Basketeers Philippines division, Xavier School was also dominating after claiming two wins – the first, a 48-40 zapping of Ateneo de Zamboanga, before scoring a 50-30 rout of Notre Dame.

Police report decline of crimes in CDO (http://damarre.wordpress.com/2009/10/19/police-report-decline-of-crimes/)

“Let the people talk on how our policemen are doing. It is still a long process and a never ending course of action,” Armilla said.

“It is our hope that by doing this, ma-engganyo ang katawhan to participate in the campaign because we badly need the support of the community,” Armilla said.

For his part, Police Superintendent Antonio Montalba, deputy police director, said he is confident that the public views the anti-crime campaign positively

especially since the police have observed proper procedures during operations.

Montalba said the campaign also aimed at raising people’s awareness against any form of criminal activity, aside from gaining public support for the crackdowns on criminals.

“Maybe if naay negative perception naa lang sa 15 percent but so far wala mi makadawat og negative reaction sa atong saturation drive,” Montalba said. (ALR)

N.B. All contact numbers is from the CDOGuide.com website

Option 1: via Parasat Sea cat (if the service is on)
PARAS SEA CAT (fast craft) Benoni (Camiguin) and Jagna (Bohol) (88) 8568562
1) assuming you already have bookings/ticket
2) negotiate with the taxi driver to take you to Macabalan Seaport/Pier (about P200-300?)
3) catch the Sea Cat (ring Parasat for the cost)

Option 2: via bus to Balingoan (a few daily service)
Bus Companies. Rural Transit Mindanao Inc. (RTMI) is the biggest bus company operating in Cagayan de Oro. It has a wide fleet of new buses and owns Rural Tours, Bachelor Tours and Bachelor Express. For bus schedules, call their Agora Bus Terminal Office at Tel. No. (88) 856-5642 or their Main Office at (88)857-3032; 858-5886; (8822) 73-5445
1) negotiate with the taxi driver to take you to Agora Market bus Terminal (P200-300?)
2) just ask which bus goes to Balingoan. Buses for Gingoog, Butuan, Surigao, etc stops at Balingoan Ferry Terminal (it cost peanuts)
3) catch the Camiguin Ferry (it cost peanuts)

Option 3: via Taxi (if you have plenty of cash)
1) negotiate with the taxi driver to take you to Balingoan (it will cost dearer)
2) catch the Camiguin Ferry (it cost peanuts)

I hope this helps.

Cagayan de Oro fast-tracks P14.1-M drainage system
By MIKE U. CRISMUNDO
October 18, 2009, 3:04pm

Oro to host AdCongress (http://www.goldstardailynews.com/content.php?id=6936)
By MARK FRANCISCO Updated October 20, 2009 12:00 AM

THE much-hyped 21st Philippine Advertising Congress which was supposed to be held in Baguio City but was canceled due to typhoon destruction may just be held in Cagayan de Oro.

During weekly flag-raising rites yesterday at city hall, Mayor Constantino Jaraula said negotiations are already in place with convention organizer Advertising Board of the Philippines (AdBoard) for the event to be held here.

According to Jaraula, the organizers of the 21st Philippine Advertising Congress were impressed with the way the city hosted the Chamber of Real Estate Builders Association national convention two weeks ago.

With this developing story, Jaraula directed the city tourism office to prepare by coordinating with various hotels should the convention push through in the city.

Jaraula estimated there may be around 2,000 delegates from all over the country who would attend the event, if ever.

This early, Jaraula is already excited by that number of delegates who would spend for lodging and touring expenses here for four straight days. The convention is tentatively scheduled for Nov. 18-21.

Last Sunday evening, Jaraula graced the inauguration of a four-level pension house along Pabayo and Cruz Taal streets.

During the inauguration, Jaraula encouraged businesses like the pension house to mushroom more because of yearly conventions being organized by various groups here every week or so.

The 21st Philippine Advertising Congress has long been calendared in Baguio City and it even had its own thrilling television spots announcing the event when tragedy struck the venue host brought by typhoon Pepeng.

AdBoard is the biggest advertising lobbying group in the country.

The multimillion-peso museum, the newest of three maintained by universities here, has the Pasaka Maranao Gallery, a collection of brassware, weaponry, ceremonial crafts, jewelry and accessories and musical instruments; the Kasaysayan Gallery, described as a mixed and multi-disciplinary collection of historical and ethnological objects; and the Galerie Rawari, an art gallery.

The Pasaka Maranao Gallery houses the original collection of Laureana San Pedro Rosales during her “educational apostolate in Mindanao” when she built the network of capitol schools in 1951.

“That apostolate had served three distinct culture groups of Mindanao well: the Maranao of Marawi City; the migrant lowland cultures of Iligan City, Cagayan de Oro City and Bukidnon; and the indigenous peoples of Northern Mindanao,” a museum flyer said.

The collection in the Maranao gallery includes textiles; artifacts of gold, silver and ivory; a diorama on the lost wax method of Maranao brassware fabrication known as the Cire-Perdue process; and heirlooms of Chinese blue and white wares from the Sung Dynasty.

Many of the artifacts came from the artisan village of Tugaya along Lake Lanao.

There is also a tableau scene of the enthronement of a Maranao sultan and the interior of a Maranao torogan, the sultan’s royal house.

The collection “is the most extensive Maranao antiquities collection in the entire Mindanao,” the flyer said.

Guests are cautioned against using flash when taking snapshots of the brasswares due to the light sensitivity of the brass, according to a curator.

The Kasaysayan Gallery houses “rare period photographs of Cagayan de Misamis and Northern Mindanao, dating back from the Hispanic era.” The gallery has a collection of Chinese porcelain and pottery from Butuan City’s archaeological sites.

It also displays pictures in sepia color of old streets and buildings, events and occasions, and includes a replica of an erupting Mount Hibok-Hibok of Camiguin Island. Near it is a picture of a circular mound in Manolo Fortich town of Bukidnon that the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology confirmed was a crater of a volcano that erupted in the prehistoric period.

The Galerie Rawari was taken from an ethnic name for a river that traverses the Matigsalog and Manobo communities in southern Bukidnon.

It is a section in the museum allotted to holding art exhibitions from artists outside the school.

Decius Esmedalla, city tourism senior operations officer, said the museum was constructed and maintained by the university.

Two other universities maintain their own museums, including Xavier University and Liceo de Cagayan.

Outside Cagayan de Oro City, the Marawi City campus of the state-owned Mindanao State University has its own Aga Khan Museum.

PPI to open 3-day seminar in Oro today (http://www.goldstardailynews.com/content.php?sectionid=8&id=6913)
Updated October 19, 2009 12:00 AM
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

IN line with its Building Better Communities Through Civic Journalism Program (BBCCJ), the Philippine Press Institute, in cooperation with The Coca-Cola Export Corporation (TCCEC) will conduct a three-day seminar, dubbed “Preparing for the 2010 Elections” from October 19-21 at the Pearlmont Inn, Cagayan de Oro City.

Thirty-three editors and reporters of community newspapers from across the country will take part in the seminar which is a follow-up to PPI’s 13th National Forum dubbed “Reporting the 2010 Elections Now” held last April.

Designed to equip the participants with the proper tools and guidelines for better coverage of the elections, the seminar is divided into seven sessions.

In line with the civic journalism slant of the seminar, the delegates are expected to present issues, observations and the pulse of the people in their respective communities for a better grassroots coverage of election-related issues.

Conducted under the PPI-TCCEC’s BBCCJ training program launched in March 2002, the seminar’s seven sessions and the resource persons are: 1st- May 2010 Elections 101, James Arthur B. Jimenez, spokesperson of the Commission on Elections; 2nd – Covering the Elections – Covering the Campaign, Ellen Tordesillas, VERA Files, Watching Electoral Fraud, Luz Rimban, VERA Files; 3rd – Campaign Finance: Money Matters, Vincent L. Lazatin, executive director, Transparency and Accountability Network (TAN); 4th – Safety of Journalists, Red Batario, Center for Community Journalism & Development; 5th – Right of Reply, Isagani M. Yambot, PPI chairman and Phil. Daily Inquirer publisher; 6th – Elections and Peace in Mindanao, Carolyn Arguillas, MindaNews; and 7th – Sharing the Best Practices on Election Coverage, Cherry Ann T. Lim, Cebu-Citizens Press Council.

A workshop will follow after the sessions to draft the election guidelines.

The class will be divided into three groups composed of journalists from the NCR, Mindanao, Visayas and Luzon.

Each group will work on a specific theme: Review/simplify the expanded Code of Ethics; Mechanisms/procedures for PPI; and Media covenant/pledge for elections.

The plenary session which will present and adopt the guidelines, will cap the seminar.

Opening remarks will be given by Isagani M. Yambot, PPI chairman-president and publisher of the Philippine Daily Inquirer and Wally Panganiban, director for Media Affairs, TCCEC.

Vergel O. Santos, PPI vice-chairman and chairman of the editorial board of BusinessWorld, will deliver the keynote address, “The Role of Media in Democracy: Civic Journalism and the Elections.”

Yvonne T. Chua, seminar director, will present the course outline.

Since its launch seven years ago, the BBCCJ training program has brought civic journalism initiative to 15 cities and one growth center, with a total of 27 civic journalism seminar-workshops and tutorials conducted from 2002 to 2008.

More than a hundred PPI member newspapers, other local publications, campus press, and radio and television stations, have participated in the program.

During the program’s first two years, journalism and communications students and their mentors, and government information officers were invited to the basic seminar-workshops.

A special segment of the seminar is a briefing by Miguel Eugenio M. Avila, presentations and demonstrations coordinator of Smartmatic-TIM, about the salient points of the automated elections system (AES) as well as a live demonstration on how the precinct count optical scan (PCOS), one of the vital components of the system, works.

Smartmatic-TIM is the multinational service provider hired by Comelec to supply hardware, software and to set up an automated election process from balloting to canvassing in all 80,000 precincts in the country on May 10, 2010.

To have their feel of automated elections, participants will take part in a mock exercise where they will fill up mock ballots and feed the sheets into the slot of a black box called PCOS.

Oro to host AdCongress (http://www.goldstardailynews.com/content.php?id=6936)
By MARK FRANCISCO Updated October 20, 2009 12:00 AM
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Guys, nabasahan nako sa Sunstar Network na sa Subic na i-hold ang 21st AdCongress... Too bad! It would have been really AWESOME if it was held here... Still, I think CdO needs to improve its facilities and add more hotel rooms to be able to host an event as big as the AdCongress... Sige lang... There's always next year... The year after that... And, the year after that... He! He! He! :-)

IFAD to invest $71 million in agricultural development projects in RP
By Marianne V. Go (The Philippine Star) Updated October 21, 2009 12:00 AM

MANILA, Philippines - The International Fund for Agricultural Develoment (IFAD) will invest at least $71 million in various projects in the Philippines as part of a five-year program that runs from 2010 to 2014 and focuses on strategic opportunities.

Sana F.K. Jatta, IFAD country manager for Asia and the Pacific, said there are three pipeline projects for negotiation, namely the Integrated Natural Resources and Environmental Management Program, $20 million; the National Agricultural Value Chain Development Program, $30 million and the Coastal Resource Management and Value Chain Develoment Program, $20 million.

Since 1978, the IFAD has committed a total of $168.8 million for 12 projects related to agricultural development in the Philippines.

Targetted beneficiaries are upland poor households; entrepreneurial poor in selected rural areas and selected and marginalized poor communities dependent on coastal resources in Bicol, Eastern Visayas, Northern Mindanao and in the Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao.

Among the IFAD’s latest projects are the Northern Mindanao Community Initiatives and Resource Management Project; the Western Mindanao Community Initiatives Project; the Rural Microenterprise Promotion Program and the Rapid Food Production Enhancement Program (RaFPEP).

Yesterday, Jatta concluded and signed with Reynaldo A. Villa, chairman of the Commission of Audit (COA), the terms of references of a contract for COA to undertake the management and financial audit of paddy seeds acquisition and distribution activities under the Rapid Seeds Supply Financing Project (RaSSFIP) for the 2009/2010 cropping seasons.

Director Frisco Malabanan of the Ginintuang Masaganang Ani Rice program said the DA is targeting the procurement of 803,000 bags of 40-kilogram certified inbred seeds for distribution in an equivalent 803,000 hectares. Malabanan said the seed distribution program had started last month.

The RaSSFIP is one of two sub-programs that form part of the recently approved RaFPEP which is being managed by the Department of Agriculture.

RaSSFIP has a total cost of $23.44 million.

The total cost of RaFPEP is $42.24 million spread over seven years, starting in 2009. It is being financed by an IFAD loan of $15.9 million equivalent to about 37.7 percent of the program cost); a European Commission grant of $13.15 million equivalent; a Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) technical assistance grant of $500 million; Philippine counterpart funding of $9.82 million; counterpart funding from local government units of $1.97 million; an in-kind beneficiary contribution of $400,000 and lastly a possible IFAD grant of $500,000 next year.

The financing agreement for the EC and IFAD contributions to RaFPEP was signed last Sept. 2.

Misamiz Oriental joins worldwide campaign vs climate change
Wednesday, October 21, 2009

IN RESPONSE to the global call for solutions to climate change, the Misamis Oriental Provincial Board on Monday passed a resolution manifesting its stand on climate change and global warming.

The resolution was crafted in support of a global call for the worldwide reduction of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere which is now measured at 387 ppm (parts per million).

October 24, 2009 will be marked worldwide as International Day of Action for the Reduction of Carbon Dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere.

Carbon dioxide (CO2) is the chief greenhouse gas that results from human activities and causes global warming and climate change. Global warming has been blamed as a major cause of the increasing frequency and intensity of typhoons, two of which devastated Metro Manila and Northern Luzon in the past weeks.

At least since the 1958 start of atmospheric CO2 measurements with high-precision instruments, the rate of increase in atmospheric carbon dioxide concentration has accelerated from decade to decade.

Atmospheric CO2 levels have stayed higher than 350 ppm since early 1988, according to data published by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) in the United States.

Vice Governor Norris Babiera said the ongoing climate crisis is alarming considering the costs in terms of the loss of lives and damages to infrastructure and property.

“This is to seriously reinforce the urgent message that people from all over the globe are calling on world leader to take dramatic and swift measures to accept 350 ppm as a necessary target for CO2 levels,” the resolution read.

“Climate crisis is everybody’s concern because everybody is affected so we have to act now and support the campaign,” Babiera, author of the resolution, said.

The Provincial Board has filed the resolution, Babiera said, in support of the December 2009 United Nation Climate Meeting in Copenhagen which aims to take a historic stand against worldwide carbon pollution. (Annabelle L. Ricalde)
