The investment is worth P180 million and will be the first Green Building to be constructed in Asia and in the entire Mindanao.
Based on a press release, ITPI said they did a market survey and they liked Cagayan de Oro because it has higher middle class market not to mention its fast-growing economy.

The condo units are sold lower than P3 million, with designs tailored in Europe, and utilize a special solar panels for renewable energy

Nearly P1b in infrastructure projects for Oro this year (http://www.goldstardailynews.com/content.php?id=8645)
By MIKE BANOS - Correspondent Updated January 4, 2009
CAGAYAN de Oro would get nearly a billion pesos in infrastructure projects based on the P1.54-trillion national budget for this year.

“The congressmen and senators from Mindanao have worked together to bring in almost a billion pesos worth of projects to Cagayan de Oro and Region 10,” said a Cagayan de Oro congressman.

The biggest appropriation was P500 million for the right-of-way (ROW) acquisition for the Mindanao Railway System (MRS) project to commence next year.

Some P360 million was also allocated for first phase of the P1.4-billion Cagayan de Oro Coastal Super Highway, a 12-kilometer four-lane coastal road running from Puntod to Bugo. Included in this amount would be the addition of another lane in Julio Pacana street.

The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has an initial P120 million to reclaim land for the superhighway along Lapasan to Gusa, according to Rep. Rufus Rodriguez of Cagayan de Oro’s 2nd District.

Not the least, the Mindanao bloc of congressmen also included P86 million to add another lane to the three-lane portion of Sayre Highway which rises in Carmen Hill along Puerto, Cagayan de Oro to Manolo Fortich, Bukidnon.

Sayre Highway is the portion of the national highway which links Puerto, Cagayan de Oro City to Kabacan, North Cotabato, traversing Misamis Oriental, Bukidnon and North Cotabato.

Ravanera: Greatest Massacre of All Time

Thursday, December 24, 2009

WE WERE terribly shocked and aghast by the Maguindanao Massacre that blatantly showed the lethal combination of impunity and madness by the perpetrators. We vehemently condemn such dastardly and barbaric act that has no place in a civilized society. We should now be resolved more than ever to work for peace in Mindanao. Greed-driven structures protected by private armies that spawned such heinous crime should now be made obsolete. This is the least that we can do in expressing our deepest sympathy, that after-all, the brutal death of the helpless victims and the fallen kindred in media will not be for naught.

Unknown to many, there is an on-going massacre that is equally brutal, systematic and with utmost impunity but has merited just an iota of concern, which is, the plunder of our dipterocarp forest and all the life forms that go with it.

Since, the late 80s, the environmental coalition that I have the privilege of leading, Task Force Macajalar, has struggled without let-up to save our remaining forest. We, together with the ecological people – the lumads, farmers, fisherfolk – had launched series of human barricades against logging.

Such was not an easy task as it was always life-threatening. All the 20 to 30 ten-wheeler trucks carrying illegally cut logs from the watersheds of Cagayan de Oro and Lake Lanao were with armed escorts. Such shameless and illegal carriages of timber were passing the thorough-fares of Cagayan de Oro at early dawn so as not to be noticed.

The 10 long years of barricading logging trucks saw us slapped with court cases by the logging companies including the hurling of a M2K2 hand-grenade that miraculously did not explode. These harassments did embolden us to intensify our advocacy that even led us to confront personally no less than then President Joseph Estrada in the barricade area. Our battle-cry then was, “Protecting God’s vanishing creation is the highest form of worship.”

Although we were successful in stopping logging to save the remaining forest but such victory came only after a decade of direct actions because the structure of greed that got support from power-that-be together with cabal of vested interest was very formidable. This contention is well backed-up by evidence that we have kept all these years.

By then, the remaining forest in the watersheds of Cagayan de Oro had gone down to only 2,000 hectares from 37,000 hectares 30 years ago (based on the Satellite Map.) Yes indeed, the 48,000-hectare city of Cagayan de Oro is almost without forest cover. Now, are you still wondering why we are suffering from ecological disasters? What is painful is when water rises causing floods, it is those without money that suffer the worst! The loggers are well secured in their mansions and those who did connive with them!

Indeed, the sins of a few loggers are now visited upon our people. From 17 million of natural forest a century ago, our country, an archipelago of 7,100 islands that needs some 10 million hectares of forest cover to have ecological security, has barely half a million left.

We have been advocating to put those who have wantonly massacred our forests accountable. From 1971-1988, the loggers have harvested 3.88 million hectares of virgin forests. Many were politicians who used their gargantuan income to buy votes. Don’t you know that one shipment alone of logs would earn a logger 360 million pesos?

The logging industry despite amassing forty-eight billion dollars (Asian Development Bank) from 1970-1988, in the same period, it had only contributed from 0.5% to 1.3% to the total Government Revenue. In the period of 1988-1994, the forest sector lost a total of P104 billion worth of old and secondary growth forests. (Phil. Assets Account 1998).

Don’t you know that one tree alone can house 130 kinds of living organisms that include ants, birds, orchids and what have you. A century ago, the Philippines was teeming with biodiversity, composed of flora and fauna many of which were found only in our forests. With our forest gone, our country has become a lost Eden.

For massacring the 16 millions of hectares of dipterocarp forests and the billions of life-forms that were erased from the bosom of Mother Earth, a great number of which had become extinct before they were discovered, we Filipinos have a lot of explaining to do to our Creator. But first, we have to suffer the consequences of our failures as stewards of God’s creation, which is only ours to protect for the coming generations.

City mulls state-of-the-art hospital in Gusa (http://cagayandeorodev.wordpress.com/2010/01/04/city-mulls-state-of-the-art-hospital-in-gusa/)
Posted on January 4, 2010 by damarre

Cagayan de Oro City Mayor Constantino Jaraula is planning to construct a state-of-the-art city hospital somewhere along JR Borja Extension in Gusa. This will materialize if he pushes thru with the multi-billion loan being offered reportedly by some Korean investors.

Based on radio interviews and discussions in the City Council shown on TV, the new hospital will complement the existing JR Borja Hospital at Carmen which has been a subject of criticisms from the political opposition.

The new hospital will cater to mostly residents coming from the eastern part of the city. Access to the city hospital has been hampered by traffic at the city proper and seems to be a little distant for east-based would be patients. Most residents also prefer Northern Mindanao Medical Center, another government hospital but more modern and better equipped than most government hospitals.

Accordingly, part of the loan being offered is also for the Golden Mile Project which is planned to be extended up to Macabalan.

Hanjin can make use of this.....No wonder the Koreans are very keen....

Tax perks key to modernize inter-island shipping --Manzano (http://www.pna.gov.ph/index.php?idn=0&nid=1&rid=250538)

MANILA, Jan. 4 (PNA)—The next administration should see to it that the country's accident-prone maritime sector is modernized fast through adequate tax concessions and suitable mandatory deadlines phasing out old vessels, Lakas Kampi CMD vice presidential candidate Edu Manzano said.

"One possible approach is the grant of ample tax benefits to shipping firms that acquire spanking-new vessels. Another parallel option is to set compulsory re-fleeting deadlines," Manzano also said.

Manzano, a former vice mayor of Makati City, was responding to a Department of Transportation and Communications (DOTC) report that all of the country's 179 inter-island roll-on and roll-off (RORO) vessels are more than 20 years old and should be phased out.

The DOTC said the M/V Baleno 9 lost off Verde Island in Batangas on Dec. 26 was 25 years old. Six people were killed while 47 others are still listed missing on account of the mishap.

The compulsory upgrading of the country's maritime fleet could also serve as springboard for a vibrant domestic shipbuilding and repair industry, according to Manzano.

"The potential multiplier effect of dynamic shipyards on the broader economy is huge. They will spur increased demand for steel, iron and other shipbuilding materials as well as ship furnishing," he explained.

"Moreover, shipyards are highly labor intensive. They can directly and indirectly employ tens of the thousands of Filipinos desperately looking for jobs," he said.

The provinces of Zambales and Batangas in Luzon, Cebu in the Visayas and Misamis Oriental in Mindanao should be fully reinforced as the country's hubs for shipbuilding and repair, Manzano said.

South Korea's Hanjin Heavy Industries and Construction Co. Ltd. already has a shipyard in Subic Bay and is rolling out a similar facility in Misamis Oriental. Japan's Tsuneishi Group already has a shipyard in Cebu. Singapore's Keppel Corp. Ltd. already has shipyards in Batangas, Cebu and Subic.

"In driving the modernization of the shipping sector, we will not only ensure safe sea travel and the efficient transfer of goods, but also stimulate a whole new shipbuilding and repair industry," he said.

Up to now, Manzano said that the country's shipping sector remained reliant primarily on imported, second-hand and aging vessels, mostly from Japan.

"Why should we continue acquiring pre-owned and dilapidated vessels from abroad, when we can build brand-new ships here, and gainfully employ tens of thousands of Filipinos to do the job?," he said.

"We are a maritime nation of more than 7,100 islands. It is imperative that we have a solid and secure shipping industry backed by equally strong shipyards," Manzano said. (PNA)

Sokor Eyes ‘Dvo-Cdo Highway’ (http://www.goldstardailynews.com/content.php?id=8657)
By MARK FRANCISCO - Staff Member Updated January 5, 2009 12:00 AM
A consortium of South Korean entrepreneurs is proposing a very ambitious project – to cut short land travel - from Cagayan de Oro to Davao cities into only two hours through a super highway passing through series of bridges and mountain tunnels.

Cagayan de Oro City Mayor Constantino Jaraula made the announcement during the city’s first flag-raising ceremony at the city hall grounds yesterday.

According to Jaraula, a group of businessmen from South Korea presented to him their plans during the Christmas holiday break.

He said the businessmen ‘though did not mention any project cost hinted that they will proceed with the project if the local government allows them to collect toll fees for 30 years when the project is completed.

Asked whether the project is feasible, Jaraula said the South Korean entrepreneurs must have already made a feasibility study prior to presentation of their proposal.

Jaraula also said that he is not aware on whether the South Korean consortium had already approached Davao City officials or the national government regarding this plan.

Travelling on the current route toward Davao City via Bukidnon highway will take about six hours.

“Ang proposal sa mga Koreans nga kung naay lawom, himoa’g tulay. Kung naay bukid, bangagan ug himoa’g tunnel. Dili parehas karon nga mag-zigzag ang dalan ug maglikay-likay kung naay bukid,” (the South Korean investors said that they would construct bridges on mountain cliffs and construct tunnels to cross mountains. Unlike today where travelers had to negotiate on zigzag roads as a way of cutting through mountain ridges), Jaraula said.

“If the project comes true, it will certainly benefit Mindanao’s economy considering that movement of people and commodities would be easier and faster,” Jaraula added.

Security tight on Black Nazarene feast (http://www3.sunstar.com.ph/cagayan-de-oro/security-tight-black-nazarene-feast)

THE Cagayan de Oro City Police Office (Cocpo) has already planned security preparations for the feast of Black Nazarene, which is on its second year Saturday.

Police Superintendent Emmanuel Hebron, deputy director of operations of Cocpo, said they are deploying policemen and mobile patrols during the Black Nazarene masses this week, and during the procession of the image of the Black Nazarene on that day.

For updates from around the country, follow Sun.Star on Twitter

So far, Supt. Hebron could not say how many policemen would be involved in maintaining peace during the festivity, which is expected to draw thousands of devotees comparable to that of the riotous Black Nazarene festival of Quiapo. A replica of the one in Quiapo, the Black Nazarene image at the Nazareno Church is the only one in Mindanao.

The police official said Cocpo has already requested bomb experts and bomb-sniffing dogs as part of the safety measures during the feast.

The Army’s Fourth Infantry Division is also expected to deploy tight security as they did last year.

Earlier, Monsigñor Rey Manuel Monsanto, parish priest of Nazareno Church, said that the devotees of the Black Nazarene will be more than double this year during the feast. An estimated 10,000 devotees joined the procession last year.

“Na-aware naman gud ang uban sa taga-Mindanao nga naa na ang replica sa Black Nazarene dinhi,” said the priest.

The 250-kilo religious icon, a replica of the Black Nazarene of Quiapo, was given by the Quiapo church to permanently enshrine the statue for Mindanao.

Starting on January 6, the replica will be delivered to three parishes for the overnight mass in Nazareth Church on that day, in Dansolihon Church on the following day and to Cathedral Church on January 8 as the final stop for the feast in the succeeding day.

Five succeeding masses shall also take place on January 9 starting at 4 a.m. to 12 noon before the celebrated mass on 3 p.m. Right after that, the procession will take place at 4 p.m.

However, Msgr. Monsanto proposed a new route this year which shall be finalized by the city’s Roads and Traffic Administration (RTA) sometime today.

“Amo pa gitun-an ang proposed route sa procession. Mohatag ra mi og final approval,” said Engr. Nonito Oclarit, RTA administrator.

The proposed route shall passed from St. Augustine Cathedral going to R.N. Abejuela St, Corrales Avenue, C.M. Recto Avenue, Julio Pacana St., Gaabucayan St., Agora and to Nazareno Church.

Last year, the route went all the way in Velez St., C.M. Recto and to Nazareno.

Meanwhile, eight barangay councils under the parish namely Barangays 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 26, 27 and Lapasan had all agreed to request their constituents who will not be joining the devotion to light candles instead in their respective barangays as procession passes by. (Jaime Frias)

“If the project comes true, it will certainly benefit Mindanao’s economy considering that movement of people and commodities would be easier and faster,” Jaraula added.

this is a fantastic plan. perhaps the plan will consider for both vehicle road and railroad. a big travel cut from 6 hours to 2 hours. people from davao region can come to CDO for white water rafting within 2 hours only and of course for a faster travel route to other major destinations like NM cities and Visayas cities.

‘Tis the season to be golfing - again
01/04/2010 | 08:29 PM
GMANews.TV

The New Year revelry is over. The cool morning dew is nurturing the fairways and greens of the exclusive clubs. Yes, it’s the time of the year again to get rid of the holiday hangover, to clean those sticks and to head out to a new golfing season.

The first five months from January to May are the busiest time of the year. Amateur golf kicks off with the 48th edition of the Philippine Ladies Open at the Legends course of the Manila Southwoods on Jan. 13 to 15 in Carmona, Cavite.

Chihiro Ikeda, the individual gold medalist in the recent Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in Laos, is clearly the favorite though she will have to face a tough opponent in defending champion Louise Manalo and a host of lady golfers from the ASEAN region.

Ikeda
Before the SEA Games, the 18-year-old Ikeda had already won seven titles in both local and international events that included amateur opens in Hong Kong, Indonesia, and Malaysia, and two triumphs in the Future Collegians World Tour (FCWT) in Florida.

A lot of people thought that Manalo will no longer bid for a consecutive crown because her family migrated to the United States. But the honor and prestige is just too hard to pass up and she will definitely be coming home within the week.

The next month, the country’s top professionals head to Bangkok, Thailand for the Asian Tour curtain-raiser, the $300,000 Asian Tour International at the Suwan Country Club from February 4 to 7.

It promises to be an exciting start to the new Asian Tour season which will include a minimum of 28 tournaments with nearly US$40 million on offer to the region’s top stars over the next 12 months.

Back home, the annual Philippine Airlines (PAL) Interclub’s two-week tournament blasts off in Cagayan de Oro City from February 13 to 28.

The succeeding month will be a crucial one for the men’s pros who are not competing regularly abroad.

The National Golf Association of the Philippines (NGAP), the franchise holder of the Philippine Open, is still uncertain if it will partner with the Asian Tour. Although both camps are in constant communication, there is no clear plan at the moment.

Tentatively, though, the Asian Tour has given the dates March 25 to 28 for the RP Open, Asia’s oldest national championship. So, it will be a race against time to solicit for sponsorships for both NGAP and Asian Tour. – Adrian Flores, GMANews.TV

However so sad to say that this upcoming prestigious golf tournament, the time that even foreign golfers can play, was alreay postponed due to what happened in Maguindanao where there was a massacre in just a day. That's the problem of our Manila media here. Generalization is always in their mind. :ohno:

Maguindanao is too far away from CdeO. :ohno: It is estimated that the said upcoming event will generate 20 million pesos for CdeO. But this won't materialized in our city as what I had already said. :ohno:

The upcoming PAL Golf Tournament will be held in Bacolod City. ^^

Forgetting too much criticisms as part of dirty politics of antiprogress camp, well once this state of the art hospital will be materialized, this will somehow increase our city's hospital beds to fill up the ever growing demand of patients, even as far as Bukidnon for e.g.

Hope our city officials could invite an investor likewise to build up an advanced tertiary hospital in uptown Pueblo (where subdivisions are already mushrooming), so that residents out there will no longer travel to downtown area to seek medical care, much more in the case of emergency.

If ever our city government could loan the huge amount of money from the Korean Exicom Bank, THEY should prioritize also that it's indeed necessary to build a public hospital particularly in Lumbia, so that ordinary people out there will have an easy access when it comes to provide health care.

Big card ushers in 2010
By Joaquin Henson (The Philippine Star) Updated January 05, 2010 12:00 AM
Philstar

MANILA, Philippines - A major international boxing card will start the new year with a bang at the Waterfront Hotel and Casino in Cebu City on Jan. 14 as ALA Gym warriors A. J. Banal and Milan Melindo face separate opponents to launch PLDT chairman Manny V. Pangilinan’s bid for big-time sports action on his newly-acquired TV-5 network.

ALA Gym owner Tony Aldeguer told The Star yesterday it was Pangilinan who personally instructed Smart sports marketing and special projects director Patrick Gregorio to headline the card with a championship bout featuring a Filipino challenger.

“Challenging a champion is always a big test and guarantees the fans an exciting contest,” said Aldeguer. “Mr. Pangilinan didn’t want a hand-picked fighter for a Filipino. He wasn’t in favor of a bout for a vacant title where the opponent could be chosen to suit the convenience of the Filipino fighter. Mr. Pangilinan made sure the Filipino’s opponent isn’t a patsy.”

Aldeguer said it wasn’t easy finding a champion willing to stake his crown against a Filipino in the Philippines but luckily, WBC Youth Intercontinental flyweight titleholder Anthony Villarreal of California was available.

Villarreal, 22, will make the first defense of his WBC crown against the unbeaten Melindo of Cagayan de Oro.

“When we were about to give up, a courageous newly-crowned WBC Youth Intercontinental champion readily accepted the challenge but the problem was he is the flyweight champion and Milan fights either as a minimumweight or lightflyweight,” said Aldeguer. “In spite of the weight difference, Milan accepted the fight without any hesitation.”

Melindo, 21, has a 19-0 record, with five KOs, while Villarreal’s mark is 9-2, with four KOs . While Villarreal’s title will be on the line, Melindo stands to lose a lot more if the American of Mexican descent wins. As a 105-pounder, Melindo is ranked No. 1 by the WBO, No. 3 by the IBF and WBA and No. 5 by the WBC. Villarreal is not rated.

PROJECT WATCH: Primavera Residences to start construction soon
Posted on January 4, 2010 by damarre

http://http://cagayandeorodev.files.wordpress.com/2010/01/tet01.jpg

Developer ItalPinas Inc. (ITPI) will soon start the construction of Primavera Residences, a ten-storey condominium project located at Pueblo de Oro Township in Cagayan de Oro City which is expected to be completed in 14 months or by early 2011.

ITPI is targeting the overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) market and the migrants abroad.

ItalPinas is a partnership between an Italian firm and the Constellation Energy Corp. headed by its chairman Jose P. Leviste Jr.

Speaking about condo projects in our city, I heard from someone that Peter Unabia is constructing a condo in Pueblo. Who can check it out? Hehe! ^^

Anyway, it seems that there's a growing demand in our city when it comes to own a condo unit. Well, sino ba yung nagsabi last year sa kanyang article na it goes like this na Bakit progressive sila? May condos naman kami dito ahh! :D

To answer "the illogical reasoning of that guy," the city already has The Courtyards, Koresco, and soon Primavera, and even condo-hotels such as Uptown Condotel, and the proposed 30 storey Korean Condotel. Exempted for now in regards to rumored See Hong 11-12 storey condotel in Cpt. Vicente Roa street. But even with kind of development, I don't think that CdeO is/will more progressive than the other cities. :D

i heard that this planned state of the art hospital is a high rise. if im not mistaken, the loan is 50-62M dolllars. im not 100% sure though

If that loan will be materialized anytime, growth plus development equals progress will be hasten.

Even the cities of New York and Tokyo will even loan multibillion dollars from their national banks and even from international banks to meet the ever growing demand of their cities. :)

But again the stupid antiprogress camp is always saying like "a sirang plaka" that CdeO is in the verge of bankrupcy.

Now why even this foreign one is so interested to let us loan a multimillion dollar in the first place if our city is in the verge of bankrupcy? Why many banks now even the foreign one, CHINA TRUST, are sprouting in our city? Why many investors are coming in and love to invest in our city? Why there's this growing middle class in our city? :)

BOOOOOOO to them!!!!

This is a big religious event, but somehow there will be an increase of tourist arrival in our city. Likewise, a time for the tourists to spend money in our city. :)

posted this building project last August 19, 2009 and had no idea of its name. Lately, the contractor has finally installed a billboard of the project: CHRISTIAN LADIES DORMITORY. The building has seven (7) floors and perhaps the tallest dorm in the city.

I am posting this separately because of its size being 7 storeys high…did I count it right? Based on the billboard, all rooms are air-conditioned, with toilet & bath. The building will also have an internet cafe, fastfood and restaurant, elevator, generator, laundry area, 24-hours security, CCTV, and lastly, a convenience store. A blue and yellow combination for the building ain’t that bad. At least you’ll notice it from afar.

MisOr eyed as shipbuilding and repair hub
Posted on January 5, 2010 by damarre

http://cagayandeorodev.files.wordpress.com/2010/01/140818001.jpg?w=374&h=281

The province of Misamis Oriental is being eyed as a shipbuilding and repair hub in the country. This is very logical since the province is a major transhipment hub for both passengers and cargo from Mindanao to Visayas and Luzon and vice-versa.

Philippine Iron Construction and Marine Works (PICMW), a major shipbuilding repair facility is located in Jasaan, an industrial, shipping and fishing town in the province. Ships running aground in Macajalar Bay are being repaired in the drydocks of the PICMW Complex for a long time now since 1972. The facility is also into shipbuilding but of smaller scale like barges. I think there are only two shipyards in the Philippines with a synchrolift system, PICMW and Keppel Batangas.

Also, South Korea’s Shipbuilding giant Hanjin Heavy Industries and Construction Co. Ltd., which already has a shipyard in Subic Bay has plans for a similar facility at PHIVIDEC which development has been ceased temporarily due to the world wide economic crisis but everybody is hoping that the project will resume this year.

For booking, you can contact LEXIS GRILL…so does this mean this is owned by Mr. Alex Pamatong? Hmmm….perhaps the owners are targetting the next schoolyear….strict parents (and moneyed sponsors!) will find the place suitable for their girls/ladies.

Cagayan de Oro is known to have the best taxi cabs in the country. The likes of Toyota Corolla Altis and Toyota Avanza plying thru the city’s streets are well-liked by tourists and first time visitors. But, have you ever heard of jeepneys with TVs?

I guess only in Cagayan de Oro…

I rode a passenger jeepney a few months ago with a small LCD Monitor on the dashboard in front of the driver’s seat just on top of his DVD/CD player. The screen I think the screen is 5 inches across diagonally so passengers at the back can hardly see what’s playing except for those on the passenger’s side of the front seat and the ones seated behind the driver.

http://damarre.files.wordpress.com/2010/01/100_6674.jpg

The other night, I happen to ride on a Bayabas-bound jeepney with a large TV with a 14-inch colored monitor. Passengers including myself and other motorists were amazed by the sight of this never-before-seen in CDO….the monitor was so bright (as seen above) that one can surely notice even if you’re not riding on the jeep.

A few months ago, Travel and Tours posted this taxi with a TV.

http://damarre.files.wordpress.com/2010/01/cagayan-de-oro-taxi.jpg

So what’s next for CDO? Videoke in jeepneys? ….

The installation of these gadgets in PUVs are really good especially in heavy traffic situations that will change the mood of the passengers. But just a reminder – don’t be too focused on the monitor as you might just miss your drop off point … or destination.

basin lahi pod nga condo ang kang Unabia. ill try to check it out this weekend. basta ang uptown condotel nagsugog na gyud.

At least you’ll notice it from afar.

i did notice this tall dorm. you cant miss it because its near XU. based on the description above, this dorm sounds expensive.

DOTC PLANS TO PRIVATIZE OLD AIRPORTS IN BACOLOD, CDO

The Department of Transportation and Communications (DOTC) on Tuesday announced the government’s plan to privatize the old Bacolod and Cagayan de Oro airports to avoid being idled as a result of the development of the new Bacolod-Silay and Laguindingan airports.

“In view of the establishment of the new Bacolod-Silay and the projected completion of the Laguindinga, Misamis Oriental airports, the government is now planning to privatize the old Bacolod airport located at Bacolod City, Negros Occidental and the Cagayan de Oro Airport located at Barangay Lumbia, Cagayan de Oro City, Misamis Oriental,” Transportation and Communication Secretary Leandro Mendoza, said.

The DOTC chief said that the privatization plan is in line with the policy of the government to recognize the indispensable role of the private sector as the main engine for national growth and development.

Mendoza also said that the proceeds of the sale could be used to finance other government infrastructure programs.

Likewise, Mendoza assure that the planned privatization will be done through a public sale process in accordance with Executive Order 323, an issuance governing the privatization program of the government, and other applicable laws, rules and regulations on privatizations of government assets and properties.

This is actually the practical recourse. So with this development, considering the vast area of the Lumbia Airport and the infrastructure in place, we can expect another growth area for CDO.

Ellorin: Forest Perils and Potentials

Wednesday, January 6, 2010

(First of two parts)

LAST year was greeted by floods in Cagayan de Oro City and the greater part of Misamis Oriental including the component city of Gingoog.

As waters came rampaging from the barren mountains of Northern Mindanao washing away anything in its path, it wasn’t difficult to blame decades old deforestation as the aggravating factor in the destructive floods.

Suddenly everyone was cursing the loggers. Even those who mocked the anti-logging human barricades in the 1990s up to early 2000 were asking where the environmental activists are.

In response, Cagayan de Oro Second District Congressman Rufus Rodriguez filed two bills in Congress, 1) to make Cagayan de Oro logging free, House Bill 6796 and 2) to reforest 3,000 hectares of the denuded forest watershed of the city, House Bill 05880.

Last Christmas, Cong. Rodriguez reported to his constituents that the HB 6796 banning all logging activities in Cagayan de Oro had passed third and final reading in the House of Representatives. We just hope that Sen. Nene Pimentel, a former mayor of the city will push the Senate’s version of the Bill for it to become a law.

Although, there are only less than 10 session days left before the election campaign season starts, it would be important to have these environmental measures active in our memories so that when Cong. Rufus gets a new mandate and the Senate will hopefully have another Pimentel, and this time, perhaps with the help of fellow Mindanaoan Sen. Juan Miguel Zubiri, the law which environmentalists have been calling since the 1990 to ban all logging in the city’s critical watershed will finally be cast in stone.

More importantly, the twin of this bill which seeks to reforest 3,000 hectares of the denuded Cagayan de Oro Watershed should also be passed as stopping only the cutting of trees is no longer sufficient but a large scale and systematic rehabilitation of our forests, abused without abatement in the last 50 years or so, will have to be firmly rooted in the ground.

In the other side of Misamis Oriental, some 120 kilometers from Cagayan de Oro, logging again reared its ugly head on Christmas day with the murder of Berting Pinagawa, a Higaonon tribal leader and anti-logging crusader. Berting as we now know have staunchly opposed the Industrial Forest Management Agreement (IFMA) of Southwoods Timber Corporation covering 11,476-hectares of forest straddling Barangay Eureka and Anakan in Gingoog and Minalwang in Claveria town.

It is very unfortunate and utterly disgusting why government, despite the glaring negative impacts of logging have retained the existence of these IFMA. For starters, IFMA is part of the miserably failed selective logging policy of the government, wherein logging companies, in the case of the Gingoog-Claveria IFMA, Southwoods Timber Corporation are allowed to harvest “mature trees” from natural forests for commercial purposes and then purportedly do reforestation. This policy is making Dracula administrator of our blood banks.

Historical data of the country’s deforestation are loud and clear that commercial logging on our natural forests is the cause of our losing huge forest cover which now stands at only less than 18% of our total land area.

In an archipelagic and mountainous country as the Philippines, scientists are saying that we need between 30 – 50% forest cover for us to have ecological balance. An assessment made by the Norwegian project Options (March 2009) classifies of the Philippines as Low Forest Cover, High Deforestation Rate (LFHD) country

Historically, IFMAs are given to former holders of Timber License Agreement (TLA) areas. In the Cagayan de Oro – Lanao watershed for example, when the TLA of Vicmar Development Corporation was no longer renewed in 1995 due to protests launched by environmentalists led by Task Force Macajalar, they simply applied for an IFMA for the same area of their TLA. Worse, in this case, they made use of the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (Armm) and applied for an IFMA there, claiming that their area of operation is already in the jurisdiction of the ARMM. But if you go to Barangay Tignapoloan, upper Dansolihon and Besigan, Vicmar is operating in these Oro barangays with a permit from Armm. It is appalling that the local government unit of Cagayan de Oro is keeping a blind eye on this for almost 15 years now.

Going back to the Southwoods IFMA, I was told by my sources in Gingoog that this covers part of the TLA of the Anakan Lumber Corporation (ALCO), a defunct Gingoog-based logging company. I was also told that logs cut legally and illegally from the forests in Gingoog, Claveria and Magsaysay areas are allegedly being processed in APTCO timber plant in Lunao, Gingoog City.

It is a shame that these elephants have been roaming the city of my birth, dubbed the City of Good Luck, and people in the DENR and People’s Palace (that’s how we call our city hall there) have pretended to deny their existence.

It took the death of a Higaonon leader and the rantings of NGOs like the Legal Rights and Natural Resource Center that the LGU of the City of Good Luck passed a resolution calling on the DENR to cancel the IFMA of Southwoods.

I am not accusing Southwoods of any crime here, but an investigation into its IFMA operations should be honestly and vigorously pursued.

While laudable that the City Council of Gingoog has stumped its feet on the matter, there should be no let-up in making everyone accountable in the denudation of the forests of Gingoog and Misamis Oriental.

It is encouraging that Congressman Ariel Hernandez, a proud son of Gingoog which is representing the party list group Anak Mindanao (Amin) in the House of Representatives is calling for a congressional inquiry into the Southwoods IFMA and the circumstances surrounding the death of an environmentalist and lumad leader Berting Pinagawa. I enjoin the good Congressman and proud son of Gingoog Ariel Hernandez of Anak Mindanao Party List and the City Council of Gingoog to investigate the compliance of Southwoods to the terms and conditions of their IFMA and make sure that aside from its cancellation, somebody has to be made accountable for any violation of law. (In the second part, I would discuss some opportunities for reforestation as part of the global response to climate change)

Hope the Airforce out there will be transferred likewise to another place (somewhere in one of the hinterlands of CdeO), so that buildings as tall as 30 storeys or more than will be constructed in Pueblo and Lumbia areas in the future. ^^

Transferring the Airforce for e.g. in Tumpagon or Besigan will somehow create a growth area in that hinterland barangay.

Moreno sees local, national economic recovery in 2010

MISAMIS Oriental Governor Oscar S. Moreno expressed optimism 2010 will be a much better year than last year for Misamis Oriental, Northern Mindanao and the entire Philippine economy.

Moreno, during his weekly television program Ang Lalawigan Karon, said the global economic crisis is already “a thing of the past” since there is “recovery signs” in many countries.

“Asia is expected to take the lead,” said the former financial analyst and banker turned local chief executive, adding that China and India are expected to take lead in the recovery from recession that has been experienced in other economies, including the United States of America.

“That is good for us (in the Philippines),” he quipped.

The Philippine economy performed relatively well in 2008 and 2009, hence it is expected to do even better in 2010, according to the governor.

Moreno said he is confident Northern Mindanao will maintain and sustain its leadership status in terms of gross regional domestic product among Mindanao regions and the rest of the country for this year.

“In Misamis Oriental alone, we see a lot of business opportunities,” he pointed out, hinting of business expansion plans of multi-million industries in the locality such as Holcim, Kawasaki, Nestle and Steag State Power.

He said that even Hanjin Heavy Industries, which is currently undertaking the Laguindingan Airport Development Project (LADP), could just be waiting for the outcome of the national elections in May this year so that it could push through with its planned establishment of a shipbuilding facility in the municipalities of Villanueva and Tagoloan in Misamis Oriental.

Earlier, the National Economic and Development Authority (Neda) in its regional economic situationer for Northern Mindanao for the third quarter of last year indicated that investments during the period amounted to P1.85 billion.

Though the figure was 65 percent lower compared to the P4.97 billion of investments in the same period last year, yet the report stated that Misamis Oriental’s data showed renewed confidence with P560.77-million investments, an encouraging improvement over the P197.49-million investments in the second quarter of last year.

The Neda report stated that 55 percent of the provincial total investments during the third quarter was contributed by locators in the Phividec Industrial Estate in Misamis Oriental (PIEMO) while the rest came from expansion investments in commercial buildings, construction and hardware facilities, housing and hotel facilities in Cagayan de Oro and in the entire province. 2010 regional meet set Feb. 21 in Oro
01/05/2010 - 11:10Wednesday, January 6, 2010

Sun Star Cagayan de Oro

CAGAYAN de Oro delegation will make life difficult for rival teams in the forthcoming Northern Mindanao Regional Athletic Association (NMRAA) Meet-Palarong Pampook.

Already, local Schools Division Superintendent Myrna S. Motoomull had mapped out plans to ensure that the Cagayan de Oro athletes will be well-equipped and well-prepared in meeting the challenge.

The 2010 Palarong Pampook will be played here starting on Feb. 21 at the spruced up Don Gregorio Pelaez Sports Center.

"So, kinahanglan nga sa atong live-in training..dili mabentaha-an atong mga atleta ilabi na sa mga kagamitan nga ilang gikinahanglan diha sa pag-ensayo. Let us all work hand in hand to build a winning attitude for Cagayan de Oro Team," said Motoomull during her last briefing with team officials and coaches at the City Central School's Conference Hall.

Motoomull expressed confidence Team CDO stands a good chance to rule the regional meet with varsity players from various private schools in the city anchoring the COAA's (Cagayan de Oro Athletic Association) campaign in the week-long meet.

Responding to the challenge, the badminton team of Corpus Christi High School took the Gingoog City tourney by storm, winning the inter-school mixed team championship last Dec. 28-30.

Fortifying the win are the talented fivesome of Danica Peligrino, Charity Bacarro, Rainelle Reformina, Christine Varias and Jhann Abejuela.

"Amo g'yong gipadula ang mga bata sa Gingoog in preparation for the regional meet," CCS badminton coach Eric Miguel told Sun.Star Cagayan de Oro.

Cagayan de Oro's qualified players for the NMRAA Meet chess competition have also participated in the just-concluded 1st Mayor Jaraula Cup Christmas Open Chess Tournament that offered over P100,000 in total cash prizes to the winners in Men's Open, Women's Open and 14-Under Kiddies categories.

"Some of our participants in the Inter-Asset tourney, featuring different sports disciplines at the City Hall grounds are also qualified athletes in the Palarong Pampook," revealed Asset (Advance Scientific System Efficiency Training) chair Edgardo "Boy" Dacoco.

Old Bacolod and CDO airports to be privatized – DOTC (http://www.pna.gov.ph/index.php?idn=0&nid=1&rid=250998)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

MANILA, Jan. 6 (PNA) --- The government plans to privatize the old Bacolod and Cagayan de Oro airports to avoid being idled as a result of the development of the new Bacolod-Silay and Laguindingan airports, the Department of Transportation and Communications (DOTC) bared.

According to DOTC Secretary Leandro Mendoza, the privatization plan is in line with the policy of the government to recognize the indispensable role of the private sector as the main engine for national growth and development.

“In view of the establishment of the new Bacolod-Silay and the projected completion of the Laguindinga, Misamis Oriental airports, the government is now planning to privatize the old Bacolod airport located at Bacolod City, Negros Occidental and the Cagayan de Oro Airport located at Brgy. Lumbia, CDO City, Misamis Oriental,” DOTC chief said.

“The privatization of these airports aims to promote a orderly, coordinated, and efficient program of optimizing the utilization of government assets. The old Bacolod and CDO airports according to our study could be better handled by the private sector and inappropriate for the government to maintain,” he said.

Mendoza also said that the proceeds of the sale could be used to finance other government infrastructure programs.

Likewise, Mendoza assure that the planned privatization will be done through a public sale process in accordance with Executive Order No. 323, an issuance governing the privatization program of the government, and other applicable laws, rules, and regulations on privatizations of government assets and properties. The City Council has enacted an ordinance converting and designating the old tennis court located near the St. Augustine Cathedral as a pay parking area and authorizing its lease to any interested investor.

This will definitely provide more parking areas for church goers, clients of City Hall and the public. The old tennis court will be converted into a multi-level pay parking area. The perspective shows a three-level structure but this may still change depending on the investor’s proposal.

PIA Press Release
2010/01/06

BIR CDO tops tax goal anew
Cagayan de Oro City (6 January) -- BIR Cagayan de Oro announced that it has exceeded its collection goal for the month of December 2009 repeating a sterling performance it made in November 2009.

This showed that the plans, programs and policies rolled out by the administration of Revenue District Officer DO Noel B. Gonzales has gone full swing and elicited positive response from the taxpaying public as manifested in the in a consecutive two (2) months excess collections over goals.

Tentative figures showed that BIR CDO has collected P215 million against goal of P198 million or a surplus of near to P17 million.

Against the same period last year (2008) which posted a collection of P142 million, the surplus is 71.5 million or 50%, the difference is by leaps and bounds and emphatically pronouncing an effective leadership in 2009.

The 2009 whole collections surpassed that of 2008 by 200 million or 10% and Regional Director Esmeralda M. Tabule announced in a ceremony that RDO 98 (CDO) is the best performing district in the entire region.

Against cumulative goal however, RDO 98 may not have met its target but the ratio of district collection shortfall is way lower than that of the national revenue deficit.

In the coming months, RDO 98 may have easy time in meeting its goal as an offshoot of the right BIR programs and policies established by RDO Gonzales.

In recognition of an excellent revenue service, RDO Gonzales was transferred and due to report to RDO No. 113-West, Davao City.

RDO Gonzales wish to express his heartfelt thanks to the supportive taxpaying public, the MOFCCCI and the Oro Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Inc., the members of media, the heads of local and national agencies, the hardworking men and women of BIR District Office 98, and the BIR Regional Officials led by RD Esmeralda M. Tabule and Asst. Regional Director Mamapok G. Diro. (PIA) [top]

Happy new Year CDO!!

I hate the freezing temperature outside that made me sick for a week, now Im going to read back the thread. There were both good and bads news as expected, well thats the reality.

2009 was a great year for CDO. In 2010 I am optomistic that it will perform much better coz we are expecting more infrastructures this year to commence including the coastal highway, bridges, and perhaps the New Laguindingan airport opening. As expected GMA will be the first one to use the airport before ending her term as president.

Bacolod, Cagayan de Oro airports to be sold by gov’t
TWO AIRPORTS in Bacolod and Cagayan de Oro will be put up for sale by the Department of Transportation and Communications (DoTC), which said the sites could be redeveloped into commercial areas.

"Since these two old airports will now be lying idle and underutilized as a result of the development of the new Bacolod-Silay and Laguindingan airports, the DoTC decided to dispose [of] them in order that the proceeds could be used to finance other government infrastructure programs," the department said in a statement.

Transportation and Communications Secretary Leandro R. Mendoza told reporters that the market values of both tracts of land were still being evaluated.

"Within the month, if we finish the documents which are being drafted already, we can start the bidding. It is actually the land that we are selling because we cannot have two airports in the areas," he said.

Mr. Mendoza said the airports could be converted into commercial spaces because of their proximity to city centers.

"It is very much like what Megaworld [Corp.] did for the Iloilo airport when they won the bid and the old airport is now a commercial area," he said.

Only the government owned land will be sold at the Bacolod airport. An area owned by Philippine Airlines will not be included in the auction.

A developer said his firm could bid for the sites. Rockwell Land president Nestor J. Padilla said in a text message: "we will definitely take a look at [the Bacolod] airport."

Mr. Mendoza, meanwhile, said the new Laguindingan airport in Cagayan de Oro would be opened in the third quarter of the year.

"We are aiming for a third quarter open[ing] for the airport and we expect that traffic to that airport would be at 1.5 million to two million passengers. The new airport is developed already and the terminal is currently being built," he said.

One thing bai, since coming na man ang elections, let us call for our regional officials to call for northern mindanao's regional autonomy, that is, for the region to be able to plan, enact its laws and tax provisions so that it will be able to realize its needs and wants. Sa pagkakaron, kung dili ka duol sa pangulo, wala pud ka. OR federalize the nation and re-arrange the tax and fiscal system. Kahinanglan ni nato sa tibuok nasud kay daghan kwarta sa kaban sa gobyerno ang nangausik paingon sa bulsa sa mga congressman. PWERA DE LOS BUENOS na lang... And then, remove those CORRUPT officials in the BIR, DPWH, and other national offices. REVIEW those plantilla items in the national offices if indeed the people who have those items are indeed "qualified" to see if they have the necessary "genuine documents" that prove their "ability and skill" and if they are "following the good faith of God in their service for the people".

i agree with this, but both sides from laguindingan crossing should be widened, the national highway from iligan to CdeO must have at least 4 lanes and better if wider since LIA serves also the west cities of northern mindanao..i assumed Gov Moreno formulated this concept beforetime:)

Dayon ang CdeO being the shopping, and leisure area, the east and west areas of CdeO will become the industrial and growth areas. Mangahinanglan ang Normin og strategic planning para kaning mga infrastructures nga anaa sa iyang jurisdiction dunay gyud kapaingnan. Let us emulate the likes of Cebu and their energy sa pagplano og pag-imbita og investors.

for me no, ok man ang railway system pero karun dili pana angayan.mas maayo i-priority ang C3 road project sa Iligan, at least 4 lane ang CIC hiway, igpit-bulua-bayabas road and Rep. Rodriguez's proposal na coastal road going to puerto para hapsay ang traffic sa corridor..:)

^^ sakto ka bai. More roads to ease up the national highway and for CdeO's main thoroughfare to be traffic free. Iligan on the other hand is arleady slowly realizing its C3. That Puntod 12 kilometer coastal highway is a nice plan. I hope CdeO's congressman will speed it up. The future looks bright for the region as the world is slowly emerging from the crisis. 10 flyovers before PGMA term ends (http://www.pna.gov.ph/index.php?idn=0&nid=2&rid=251126)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

ILOILO CITY, Jan. 6 (PNA)-– Construction is ongoing for 10 flyover projects in different parts of the country slated for completion before the term of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo ends by June 30, 2010.

President Arroyo was here Tuesday to inspect the construction of the second flyover project here at the junction of Gen. Luna and Jalandoni streets.

The President said the project is her administration’s legacy to the people of Iloilo in helping solve the traffic problem of a fast growing city in the Visayas.

She, likewise, corrected public impression on the financial status of the project by saying the ongoing flyover is a project of the Philippine Government through the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) and funded with a loan from the French Government.

The proposed 282-meter second flyover project here is being constructed under the President’s Bridge Program, Mega Bridges for Urban and Rural Development Project and funded by the French Government with French Supplier Matiere S.A.S.

Director Emil Sadain of the President’s Bridge Program Office, DPWH said the P386.5 million flyover project in Iloilo City will be completed by April 2010 or two months ahead of schedule by June 22, 2010.

Sadain said that there are 18 bridge projects under the program constructed in Western Visayas. These include 13 projects in the province of Antique, 4 in Iloilo including a flyover in Iloilo City and 1 in the province of Capiz.

The 17 bridge projects were already completed in 2009 and the second flyover project will be completed this year. The first flyover in this city was completed in 2008 along the junction of Infante-Gen. Luna streets.

The nine other flyover projects with ongoing construction are in the junction of Manila North Road Dagupan-Asingan Road in Urdaneta, Pangasinan; in the junction of Gapan-San Fernando-Olongapo Road-Lazatin Avenue in the City of San Fernando, Pampanga;in the junction of Lacson Avenue-Lacson Circumferential Road in Bacolod City; in the junction of Araneta and Magsaysay streets in Bacolod City;

In the Marilao Highway in Marilao, Bulacan; in Naga City, Camarines Sur; in Puerto Sayre Highway in Puerto, Cagayan de Oro City; and in the Maharlika Highway-Tadeco intersection in Panabo City, Davao del Norte.

On the other hand, Sadain said the proposed third flyover project in the diversion road here requested by Iloilo City Mayor Jerry P. Treñas, was already listed by DPWH for implementation after the completion of the 10 flyover projects in the country.(PNA)

PROJECT WATCH: Another Gaisano project in Cugman (http://cagayandeorodev.wordpress.com/2010/01/08/project-watch-another-gaisano-project-in-cugman/)
Posted on January 8, 2010 by damarre

http://cagayandeorodev.files.wordpress.com/2010/01/img_1209.jpg

Mr. Stephen Gaisano hasn’t even completed its building project along Julio Pacana Street and I saw this long stretch of property in Cugman being fenced with G.I. sheets. Accordingly, Mr. Gaisano has bought the property from the Tamparong family and is reportedly developing a commercial arcade in the said lot.

Some workers at the site said they heard it will be a warehouse but based on the last set of photos below, the width is shorter that the length of 18-wheeler trucks known to transport goods for Gaisano’s stores. Some also said it will be an arcade which I’m more inclined to believe.

In my opinion, if it is indeed an arcade it would be similar to that of Kimwa Arcade where a long line of commercial stalls are up for rent for office or business establishment where the main establishment is Leo’s Bar.

http://cagayandeorodev.files.wordpress.com/2010/01/img_1207.jpg

As seen in the following pictures, the facade is nearly 200 meters long. Gaisano is also rumored to be negotiating with the adjacent lot being occupied by entrepreneurs selling seedlings for nursery or planting. Said is also owned by Tamparong family…..again.

But whether it is an arcade or a warehouse, it is still good news for Cagayan de Oro since this will provide opportunities for those without work.

Construction of the five(5)-storey Science Complex is now underway at the Mindanao University of Science and Technology football grounds.

I have initially posted this project last June 22, 2009 with assumption that construction will start before year 2009 ends. Well, I should have assumed one more week and I would have been right.

Since it became a university, the school has lined up several infrastructure projects to further enhance its status as a university at par with existing government educational institutions.

Based on the pictures gathered, two (2) large cranes, including one with a pile driver are working on the concrete piles as foundations for the new building.

http://cagayandeorodev.files.wordpress.com/2010/01/100_6710.jpg

http://cagayandeorodev.files.wordpress.com/2010/01/100_6708.jpg

The concrete piles are shown below and more are believed to be delivered in the coming days.

http://cagayandeorodev.files.wordpress.com/2010/01/100_6709.jpg

Lectures in the school are not affected because the work site is on the field. Some students have asked, because of the construction, where are they going to have their physical education (P.E.)? …considering that their Gym was gutted down last year.

http://cagayandeorodev.files.wordpress.com/2010/01/100_6707.jpg

The school has also unveiled its new marker beside the front gate.

Below is the architect’s perspective of the proposed building.

LRT 1 North extension to start operations next month (http://www.manilatimes.net/index.php/business-columns/9159-lrt-1-north-extension-to-start-operations-next-month)

Thursday, 07 January 2010 00:00

The Light Rail Transit (LRT) Line 1 extension from Caloocan to Quezon City will start operating next month, the Department of Transportation and Communications (DOTC) said Wednesday.

Leandro Mendoza, Transportation and Communications secretary, said the Balintawak and Roosevelt stations of the LRT 1 North Extension Project will start operations in February.

The project, which costs about $1.8 billion, has four stations: Monumento, Balintawak, Rosevelt and North Avenue. This will close the EDSA Loop as this would be connected to the Metro Rail Transit (MRT) Line 3 North Avenue Station.

The DOTC said the Balintawak station will provide modal interchange for bus and jeepney services entering Metro Manila from the north via the North Luzon Expressway.

The project would also involve the construction of the P777-million Grand Central Terminal, which could connect the existing MRT Line 3, the proposed MRT 7 and the LRT Line 1.

Upon completion, the LRT 1 is expected to serve about 800,000 to one million passengers.

Melquiades Robles, Light Rail Transit Authority (LRTA) administrator said a total of 149.44 million passengers used the Baclaran-Monumento Line (Line 1) in 2009, beating the old record of 145.83 million passengers set in 1994.

“With this all-time high, the LRT has established itself as the real alternative transportation in the metropolis for both the masses and the middle class. They have really learned to patronize the LRT systems. In fact, our ridership record remained high even during those times when fuel prices were low,” Robles said.

He added that street-level congestion, volatile fuel prices, increasing environmental awareness, the fielding of more trains, continuously improving services and affordable fare rates, all contributed to LRTA’s successful year.

In a related development, the Transportation and Communications department announced that the government plans to privatize the old Bacolod Airport located at the Bacolod City, Negros Occidental and the Cagayan de Oro Airport located at Barangay Lumbia, Cagayan de Oro City, Misamis Oriental.

The disposal of these government assets would be done through a public sale process. The transport department said it decided to sell the two old airports because it would just become idle with the completion of the new Bacolod-Silay and Laguindingan airports.

According to the DOTC, it would be better for the private sector to manage and operate the old Bacolod and Cagayn de Oro City airports as it is “inappropriate for the government sector to maintain” these old facilities.

PROJECT WATCH: Heritage Monument unveiling moved to February (http://cagayandeorodev.wordpress.com/2010/01/08/project-watch-heritage-monument-unveiling-moved-to-february/)
Posted on January 8, 2010 by damarre

http://cagayandeorodev.files.wordpress.com/2010/01/img_1136b-copy.jpg

THE scheduled unveiling of a heritage monument next week at the Provincial Capitol grounds will be moved to February pending its final completion.

Maricel Casiño-Rivera, head of the Misamis Oriental provincial press office, said construction of the monument is still ongoing and is yet to be finished by Monday next week.

Earlier, the Provincial Government set the unveiling of the 23-foot heritage monument on January 11 in time for the opening of the annual “Tabo sa Umahan,” which highlights the province’s 80th founding anniversary celebration.

The heritage monument, situated at the center of De Lara Park, is one of the two monuments commissioned by the Provincial Government for P27 million with internationally-renowned Filipino artist Eduardo Castrillo.

The other one is the “Bayani ng Media” which was unveiled on August 21, 2009.

The monument, which will be made of brass, hopes to bring “a message of identity and gratitude, a message of hope, intelligence and destiny,” according to Governor Oscar S. Moreno when the projects were inaugurated early last year.

Once finished, the monument would depict two important historical events with which Misamis played significant roles-the Katipunan revolution and the Philippine-American War-with local war heroes Apolinar Velez and Nicolas Capistrano.

The monument would also feature the province’s natural landmarks, the Cagayan de Oro River, lush rainforest mountains and terrains, the historic Saint Augustine Church, a Kagay-anon mother with a child that would seek to capture the life of ethnic people, and the leaders who spearheaded the dynamic growth of the province in its early days.

At the left side of the monument would be seen the farming life of the province and a Muslim Maiden playing an indigenous instrument as she pays homage to the early settlers who contributed to the well-being and progress of the province.

The right side of the monument will show the noted leaders and statesmen who fostered the growth and gained the pride for Misamis Oriental, all of them having held the highest office in the National Government while at the lower side would stand Xavier University.

The official seal of Misamis Oriental and the bronze dedicational plaque and marker will serve as the monument’s base.

Aside from its tourism value, Moreno underscored the cultural significance of the monument to the province’s heritage and history. (Terry D.C. Betonio)

Agri-fair, cultural shows usher in Misamis Oriental's 80th year (http://www.pia.gov.ph/?m=12&fi=p100108.htm&no=73&r=r10&y=&mo=)
by Uriel C. Quilinguing

Cagayan de Oro City (8 January) -- Misamis Oriental has just turned 80 this year.

It was carved out from the undivided Misamis province through Legislative Act No. 3537 that the Philippine Legislature approved on November 2, 1929. The other province was named Misamis Occidental. Adoption of the measure however came 10 years later under Legislative Act No. 3777.

As they say, the rest was history. Yet, the vignettes of the past are being captured in the ongoing construction of the Heritage of Misamis Oriental Monument, under the guidance of renowned international sculptor Eduardo Castrillo, right at the center of the Provincial Capitol ground.

This imposing edifice is expected to be completed early next month and its unveiling to the public will also be one of the significant events as the province marks its 80th anniversary.

This year, to highlight this historical milestone, the famed Salo-Tabo, an agri-fair which has been staged four (4) times in a year since 2004 will usher in the anniversary activities. This time, the first-quarter edition and just like in the past, it is dubbed as Tabo sa Umahan to highlight the province's agricultural products.

Festive air are expected at provincial capitol ground due to nightly musical and cultural events that would feature the uniquely indigenous beats and tempo, colorful and intricately designed costumes and choreographed steps of the Higaonons, Maranaos and traditional Filipino and Spanish-inspired dances.

But before anything else, Msgr. Rey Monsanto, the parish priest of the Nazareno Parish, will officiate the Holy Eucharistic Mass right at the provincial capitol kiosk at 7 o'clock in the morning on Monday, January 11. After which, the opening program of the week-long Tabo sa Umahan (January 11 to 15) to usher in the year-long celebration of the 80th foundation anniversary of the province will follow.

Senator Juan Miguel Zubiri, the majority floor leader of the Philippine Senate, will be gracing and delivering the keynote address during the occasion. This, even as Governor Oscar S. Moreno will also give his anniversary message while Vice Governor Norris C. Babiera will do the honors of welcoming the dignitaries and guests.

Zubiri and Moreno will then lead the ceremonial slicing of the "birthday cake" of Misamis Oriental province, toasting of the wine, and in releasing 80 symbolic red-blue-and-white balloons into the air.

Viewing of the exhibits will then follow, after the ceremonial ribbon of the Tabo sa Umahan shall have been cut. Other than the display of agricultural produce, semi and processed agricultural products, as well as exhibits of agri-support services, the nightly musical and cultural attractions, there will be goodwill basketball games every afternoon. Also, there will be contests on banana cake baking, pinakbet cooking, poster-making, among other crowd-drawing events in the afternoon.

The launch of the Citizens Charter on Thursday (January 14) will also be held at 8 o'clock in the morning. Closing and awarding ceremonies of Tabo sa Umahan is set on Friday evening. (Misamis Oriental Provincial Press Office) [top

Firm to hold recruitment services in Oro (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/cagayan-de-oro/firm-hold-recruitment-services-oro)

A LEADING training and recruitment arm of the country's top call centers will conduct recruitment services in Cagayan de Oro on January 8.

Top officers of People2Outsource Inc. will visit the Public Employment Service Office (Peso) at City Hall on Friday to screen and accept qualified applicants to be deployed in different call centers in Manila.

For updates from around the country, follow Sun.Star on Twitter

Councilor Alexander Dacer, chair of the City Council Committee on Labor and Employment, is encouraging those who are looking for jobs to visit the Peso office.

Dacer said People2Outsource will provide enhancement communication skills training, health and values seminar to those who will be qualified for the job.

Peso manager Juvy Pasa said more firms are scheduled to conduct recruitment services in Cagayan de Oro in a few weeks.

In Northern Mindanao, which included Cagayan de Oro, there were an estimated 2.72 million employed persons in the third quarter of 2009, up by 2.22 percent from the 2008 data of 2.66 million. But while labor force participation rate went up by 0.40 percent in the quarter, employment rate went down to 94.3 percent from 95.6 percent in the previous period.

Nevertheless, total employed persons in the quarter increased by 24,000, from 1.801 million 1.825 million.

The services sector -- which included communication, hotels and restaurants, transport, real estate and education -- was the biggest employer with 46 percent, dislodging the agriculture sector which employed only about 42 percent.

But agriculture is still the biggest sub-sector, employing 697,000 people in the third quarter of 2009 compared with the same period in 2008. (TDCB)

« PROJECT WATCH: MUST Science Complex now underway PROJECT WATCH: Heritage Monument unveiling moved to February »

Now that the City Proper is already congested with developments, a move like this by Gaisano will indeed spur up a commercial growth area in this suburban barangay of Cugman.

I can say that the whole Nazareth and parts of Macasandig, Kauswagan, and bigger parts of Carmen already belong to City Proper. Now it's time for suburban Cugman and also Bulua in the west CdeO to be slowly, but actively swallowed by the City Proper as the years go on. But progress in our city has been so rapid, and this progress will be doubled, much more if the new airport will be in full operation and Hanjin will resume its big project in the near future.

Anyway, wala koy kalambuan diri bai so far sa makaron. Hehehe! Ikaw naa?

Black Nazarene replica is in de Oro
by Froilan Gallardo/MindaNews
Saturday, 09 January 2010 00:42

CAGAYAN DE ORO (MindaNews/08 January) -- Thousands of devotees will join the procession of the Black Nazarene in Manila on January 9 but what many of them do not know is that the religious icon they will revere, is not the real replica.

The real “callejeron" or replica of the famous Black Nazarene is in Cagayan de Oro after it was was given by the Quiapo Basilica to the Archdiocese of Cagayan de Oro last year.

And the Cagayan de Oro Archdiocese has prepared for a procession of the “callejeron" at 3 p.m. tomorrow from the St. Augustine Cathedral to the Nazareno church in Barangay Lapasan.

Local devotees have already flocked at the St. Augustine Cathedral on Friday afternoon where the religious icon was brought after it made rounds at various churches and places of worship in Cagayan de Oro City this week.

On Saturday, the Black Nazarene will be brought out of the cathedral and will be paraded on the streets, carried on the shoulders of “Translacions" or official escorts.

Devotees from Quiapo came all the way to Cagayan de Oro City last year and taught locals how to carry the icon by swaying it along the way.

Like those in Quiapo, local devotees are expected to wave white and maroon handkerchiefs to honor the replica of a centuries-old statue of the suffering Black Nazarene.

Aside from loud yelling of “Viva Nazareno!”, local devotees will not be as unruly, for the local archdiocese frowns upon fanaticism.

“Ang importante mao ang atong debosyon kang Señor Nazareno. Maghinulsol kita sa atong mga sala,” (What is important is our devotion to the Nazarene. Let us atone for our sins), Monsignor Ray Manuel Monsanto, parish priest of Nazareno Church, said.

The “callejeron" arrived in Cagayan de Oro early January 2009 after the Quiapo Basilica gave it to the Nazareno Church as a gift.

Monsanto said the image is not only a gift to the parish but also to the people of Mindanao who are besieged with a continuing unstable peace and order condition and uncertainties.

The “callejeron” was the replica of the Black Nazarene that devotees in Manila used to see every January until church officials in Quiapo decided to gift it to the Nazareno Church in Barangay Lapasan.

"Our original plan was to borrow just the clothes so we can use it for our own Black Nazarene image here, but Monsignor Jose Clemente Ignacio, the parish priest of the Minor Basilica of the Black Nazarene, told us that they have decided to bring the image here and make the Nazareno Church its permanent home," Monsanto said.

A life-sized, dark-skinned, wooden sculpture of the suffering Jesus Christ, the Black Nazarene is held to be miraculous by its thousands of Filipino devotees in this prominently Christian country in Asia.

The original image was said to be carved by an anonymous Aztec carpenter and was transported to the Philippines by a Spanish galleon from Mexico.

It was first brought to Manila on May 31, 1606 by a group of Augustinian Recollect friars, the image was originally housed in the first Recollect church in Bagumbayan, now Luneta Park. (Froilan Gallardo/MindaNews)

Hello friends. I'm not a regular poster here but I read a lot of your exchanges. I wanted to go through this entire thread but it seems it is already too long for me to read in full. I was however able to come across some exchanges in the first few pages about the up and coming elections for city mayor. I just want to ask if anyone is familiar with Berchmans Abejuela who is running for mayor. I just want to know what you guys think of him and if he has any real chance of winning a head to head collision with Emano and Uy.

Frankly to tell you sir that Mr. Berchman Abejuela has no chance of winning over Emano or even Uy. ^^

By the way, Mr. Berchman Abejuela if I'm not mistaken is the elder brother of honorable city councilor Abejuela. ^^

Thank you for the insight Taegon. Yes he is the older brother of Councilor Maning Abejuela. He was also a councilor himself but that was a long long time ago. I suppose none of the younger people know him. I suppose the elections will be a battle between only two people, Uy and Emano.

Victoria Suites, located just in the immediate vicinity of the city amphitheater is now on soft opening. After months of massive renovation, this accommodation facility is finally open and adds to the growing number of hotels in Cagayan de Oro City.

The tarpaulin is seen hanging at the hotel’s facade. Maybe, the management is still working on its signage to be installed.

DPWH to construct flyover at Puerto Junction
Posted on January 8, 2010 by damarre

http://cagayandeorodev.files.wordpress.com/2010/01/psy.jpg?w=467&h=336

Director Emil Sadain of the President’s Bridge Program Office, DPWH said the government is constructing ten (10) flyovers in different parts of the country before President Arroyo’s term ends including one at the Puerto-Sayre Highway Junction in Cagayan de Oro City.

This is very good news for the city since that junction is very congested with lots of vehicles converging plus the presence of huge lines of hauling trucks and passenger buses make it one of the busiest in the city, despite being 14 kilometers from the city proper.

Further, Puerto Public Market is also near the junction. The crossing is one of the vital road networks on the island serving the main highway to Bukidnon and Davao.

In previous press releases, Cong. Rufus Rodriguez announced the approval of an overpass to be built in Barangay Puerto worth P230-Million. This will help the land cargoes from Bukidnon to Cagayan de Oro.

This post will involve the construction projects mentioned in earlier months and will show you the latest status. The first one shown above is the 5-storey commercial building at the corner of JR Borja and Daumar Streets in Cogon. I posted this first last August 14, 2009.

As of today as shown above, the building structure and form has been completed. Workers are now on the exterior finishing and perhaps metal cladding which is the fad nowadays.

Next is this building below in Bulua just a few meters across the Department of Budget & Management (DBM) Building. First posted last August 19, 2009. We can now call it the VJANDEP Building, unofficially that is. Owned by the now-famous entrepreneur of Vjandep Pastel, Col. Virgilio Jose, the building bears the logo of Vjandep at the top. It was very clear a few weeks ago but the contractor has covered a large protion of the logo when they installed the metal claddings. Could this be the main headquarters of Vjandep? But one thing’s sure, all the money from the pastel pasalubongs for CDO visitors must have financed the project.

Below is the small commercial arcade in the heart of the city, along Rizal-Gomez Streets. First posted last November 6, 2009, it is nearing completion. In fact, one stall is already open as shown below even as construction materials and debris are still in the premises. More commercial spaces will be available.

Lastly, some progress of the renovation of the old Casa Ofelia. I thought I finally saw the new name of the hotel but unfortunately, it says: WELCOME HOME LOVAAS FAMILY…HAPPY NEW YEAR!…FROM ABALDE FAMILY. Still, some progress as workers are seen doing all kinds of “renovation” inside the building.

PROJECT WATCH: Nature’s Pensionne – Velez expansion
Posted on January 8, 2010 by damarre

http://cagayandeorodev.files.wordpress.com/2010/01/img_1220.jpg?w=468&h=351

ust months after opening to the public, I posted last November 6, 2009 the seemingly small expansion at the rooftop of Nature’s Pensionne – Velez. But now, the small has become big with very clear additional floors.

Hmmm…..the hotel is facing shortage of rooms as more and more tourists and businessmen alike are looking for affordable yet good accommodation facilities. Info is that they are usually turning down lots of inquiries and reservations as the hotel is always fully booked. No wonder the hotel business is booming in Cagayan de Oro.

This is the latest of the series (if you have been subscribing on my blog…hehe). The project above is just beside Casa Azucena within Marfori Compound. It’s probably a 3-storey apartment building or lodging house.

More photos below. You can see the signboard of Casa Azucena at the corner on the lower photo.

http://cagayandeorodev.files.wordpress.com/2010/01/100_6675.jpg?w=468&h=353

JENTEC D.C. CORPORATION is also building a very large storage facility in Agusan, Cagayan de Oro City. This is just a few hundred meters from Pepsi-Cola Bottling Plant. The company is into cold storage business particularly meat products so probably the Agusan project is of this kind of business too. A lot of construction workers were hired. Good for CDO!

http://cagayandeorodev.files.wordpress.com/2010/01/100_6701.jpg?w=468&h=353

Lastly for this post, a newly-fenced property near Camp Alagar entrance so you won’t miss this. Still along the highway, but I have no idea because construction work was still limited to fencing and some earthfilling. Probably, more info will be revealed in the coming days.

Jetti to open gas station in Camaman-an
Posted on January 8, 2010 by damarre

http://cagayandeorodev.files.wordpress.com/2010/01/100_6693.jpg?w=468&h=353

JETTI Petroleum Inc. will soon open another fuel refilling station in Cagayan de Oro after its application was approved recently by the City Council.

To be located at the corner of Hayes St. in Luminarias Village, Barangay Camaman-an, the fuel refilling station would be the fifth station to be operated by dealer Allan Sagrado. His other Jetti stations are in barangays Kauswagan and Bulua in Cagayan de Oro, and in the cities of Malaybalay and Valencia in Bukidnon.

During the City Council’s recent regular session, a resolution was passed by the city councilors endorsing “with social acceptability and no objection” Jetti’s application, subject to the rules and regulations provided for under the city codified ordinance.

http://cagayandeorodev.files.wordpress.com/2010/01/100_6694.jpg?w=468&h=353

Councilor Caesar Ian Acenas, chair of the City Council Committee on Environment and Natural Resources, had already reviewed the application and verified the conduct of a public hearing by the Barangay Council of Camaman-an.

He said this is to ensure that the nearest neighbors and residents in the area are opposing the establishment and subsequent operation of the fuel refilling station.

PROJECT WATCH: MUST Science Complex now underway (http://cagayandeorodev.wordpress.com/2010/01/08/project-watch-must-science-complex-now-underway/)
Posted on January 8, 2010 by damarre

http://cagayandeorodev.files.wordpress.com/2010/01/100_6706.jpg

The school has also unveiled its new marker beside the front gate.

http://cagayandeorodev.files.wordpress.com/2010/01/100_6711.jpg

Below is the architect’s perspective of the proposed building.

Black Nazarene replica is in de Oro (http://www.mindanews.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=7455&Itemid=50)

Where Pastel originated
By VINCE G. LOPEZ
January 9, 2010, 4:42pm
Manila Bulletin

Pastel, the melt-in-your-mouth soft buns filled with yema has an interesting story to tell. History books trace its origins to Camiguin. The Bollozo family of Camiguin was the first to make and bake the pastel. The Bollozo’s secret recipe for pastel was then transferred to sweet-toothed couple Ret. Lt. Col. Virgilio Jose and Eleanor Popera who put up enough capital for the business VJ and EP which is popularly known as Vjandep.

The company produced its first three boxes of pastel in 1990 and soon, the delicacy found its way to Cagayan de Oro where it became a mainstay and a local favorite. Over the years, tourists and guests coming from CDO would be carrying home boxes of the pastry. The pastel eventually found its way to Bukidnon and had since become the province’s signature sweet.

You know what I really wondered in the first place why our city government has built the legislative building if only the legislative building and even the city hall complex will be sold in the end to an investor. Emano is really serious to transfer the city hall and other local government offices (as one stop) to upper Dagum, Carmen if only he'd given a chance to be the city mayor again. His plan is indeed nice and quite convenience for us Cagayanon since we won't longer spend too much fare (money) or gasoline, time and effort every time we need requirements, e.g business permit, etc. from the city hall and other local government offices.

Besides transferring of city hall and other local government offices will create another "growth" in the said new place or let's say expanding more the growth of commercial area of the city, and traffic in downtown CdeO will be somehow minimized.

Anyway, "para modako ang price sa pagbaligya sa usa ka businessmen," was the answer I had obtained from one of the city hall employees.

Agri-fair, cultural shows usher in Misamis Oriental's 80th year (http://pia.gov.ph/?m=12&fi=p100108.htm&no=73&r=r10&y=&mo=)
by Uriel C.

(Misamis Oriental Provincial Press Office)

Brownout in Camiguin, parts of MisOr (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/cagayan-de-oro/brownout-camiguin-parts-misor)
Sunday, January 10, 2010

THE island of Camiguin and some parts of Misamis Oriental experienced a power interruption Saturday as the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) scheduled to shutdown its Aplaya-Jasaan/Balingoan 69-kv line.

Elizabeth Ladaga, NGCP corporate communications officer, said the shutdown was done to facilitate the tapping of the new substation of Misamis Oriental Electric Service Cooperative (Moresco) 2 in the municipality of Sugbongcogon.

Among the areas affected by the power interruption include the whole island of Camiguin and the towns of Jasaan, Balingasag, Lagonglong, Salay, Binuangan, Sugbongcogon, Kinuguitan, Balingoan and Claveria in Misamis Oriental.

Simultaneous with the shutdown, Ladaga said the NGCP also conducted maintenance activities, which include the replacement of six rotten wooden poles to steel poles at Aplaya in Jasaan, Balingasag and Sugbongcogon along the 69-kv line.

With the power interruption, Ladaga said the NGCP requested everyone to observe safety measures during the course of the activity. (TDCB)

CdeO City Council hit PAL for Venue Change of PAL Golf (http://themindanaocurrent.blogspot.com/2010/01/sports-leisure-edited-by-john-montalvan.html)

The Sanguniang Panglungsod of Cagayan de Oro passed a resolution asking Philippine Airlines to reconsider their decision to transfer the venue of this year’s PAL Golf to Bacolod. The event was originally planned to be played at Pueblo de Oro and Del Monte Golf courses.

In a special report filed by Majority Floor Leader Ramon Tabor, he said that the organizers of the tournament arbitrarily transferred the venue without consulting government agencies in the city, causing economic problems for the venues who have already prepared for the event including the hotels and restaurants in the city.

Tabor further said that the reason for the transfer is the Maguindanao Massacre incident which occurred last November 23, 2009 which is over a hundred kilometers from the city. He suggested that PAL Executives review their geography to check where Maguindanao and Cagayan de Oro are located.

In an exclusive interview with a PAL official, who asked not to be identified, it was gathered that some foreign players have expressed their plan not to participate in this year’s tournament because their insurance policies refuse to cover trips to Mindanao. He said that the company did not want to gamble with the security of the participants because if anything happens the airline will have to answer for it.

In a consultation with team captains, it was gathered that majority of the teams preferred the transfer of venue and that they could not assure a good attendance for the tournament if the venue remains in Mindanao.
As of this writing we are still awaiting the official statement from Philippine Airlines.

In the first place, CdeO is 500 miles away from Maguindanao, and Maguindanao is not the whole Mindanao itself, but just a province. Manila media here is very insensitive and irresponsible on their reports, bringing not only the whole Mindanao here, but whole Philippines most of the time before the international audience. You know what if you try to look up the whole view here, the postponement of the PAL International Golf Tournament here in CdeO is not only a big insult to CdeO's very peaceful and ordered environ, but also to other Mindanaon provinces and cities as well. :ohno:

Ayala Land unveils 2010 plans in multiple growth centers
(The Philippine Star) Updated December 27, 2009 12:00 AM

MANILA, Philippines - Fresh from meeting 2009 head on in the face of global economic recession, the country’s most trusted real estate company, Ayala Land, Inc. (ALI) goes full throttle next year with a more aggressive posture.

Ayala Land takes on 2010 with the most number of new projects to be launched within a single year ever. Antonino T. Aquino, Ayala Land president, announces new initiatives on the establishment of multiple growth centers across the Philippines to bring to more areas the well-recognized expertise of Ayala Land in enhancing land, enriching lives. He says, “We’ll have the busiest year ever as we’re expanding in geography, in the products that we offer including new business lines and in the market segments that we cater to. There will be a dynamic interplay of our projects and where we used to be focused only on the traditional segments, now we’ll be expanding for the benefit of our customers.”

“We are thinking of more than a dozen different locations, starting off in the North with Baguio, Angeles in Pampanga, Subic and in five locations in Southern Philippines namely Cebu, Cagayan de Oro, Davao, Iloilo and Bacolod. We are making sure that we are coming around with product offerings that are best suited for the market and which will show the best practices that Ayala Land is known for,” he states, as he proceeds to give an overview of activities to take place.

In Baguio next year, the retail area and the BPO complex will begin development in Camp John Hay, allowing customers to enjoy the natural beauty of Baguio. Meanwhile in Subic, a bustling development will arise with a mix of retail, BPO and residential components.

In Pampanga, the company relishes the market acceptance of the Marquee mall in levels beyond expectations. “In the pipeline for the area is a very nice residential development right across the mall. It will be a mid-rise project with a Serendra feel,” enthuses Aquino.

With the successful expansion this year of Ayala Center Cebu with The Terraces, the company is set to have its first foray with Alveo and Avida offerings in the first quarter in Cebu.

Meanwhile in Davao, where Ayala Land jumpstarted its entry with the lifestyle mall, Abreeza Mall, new residential developments are slated to be launched coupled with a BPO complementary project, states Aquino. Similar mixed-use developments are also planned for in Cagayan de Oro.

Avida will be very busy launching some new phases in its existing developments, like Tower 5 for Avida Towers New Manila, Tower 5 for Avida Towers San Lazaro, and Tower 7 in Avida Towers Sucat, all to be launched in the 1st quarter and Avida Settings Phase 2 in Cavite in the 2nd quarter.

Cebu’s Amara and Alegria Hills in Cagayan De Oro will likewise see the addition of new phases.

The Laguindingan airport will be an international airport while the Bacolod-Silay airport will service mostly domestic flights. -- ENJD

I love to post this "again and again and again and again--------------" to show to others out there that Laguindingan Airport is intended to be one of THE international airports here in this island.

Airport with an international standards??????, I can say, is not suited for the fastest growing NorMin region and for the fastest growing urban center, CdeO here in this island. :D

Well, who was that source person (whom they referred to JUSTIFY their viewpont before), who said that the new airport that would serve NorMin is an just an airport with international standards FOREVER? :gossip::D

25T crowd in 'peaceful' Black Nazarene feast
Monday, January 11, 2010
By Annabelle L. Ricalde

FROM being cured of diseases to a respite from natural disasters, prayers poured in during Saturday's annual procession of the Black Nazarene in Cagayan de Oro, where police said close to 25,000 devotees showed up.

Norma Baylon, a widow, said she came all the way from the town of Magsaysay in Misamis Oriental to pray for one of her children who has cancer.

"Layo intawon og naabtan, pero nia dire tungod sa pagtoo nga kaluy-an (I've come far enough but I have to be here to seek mercy)," said the 50-year-old Baylon, one of the thousands of devotees who braved the heat and dust to complete the more than four-hour procession.

Another devotee's wish wasn't that personal.

Norman Sahiron, a native of Gingoog City, said he prayed that the region be spared from Mother Nature's wrath, noting that in the last two years, a pendulum of floods and destructive, wind-whipped waves had punished Misamis Oriental and Cagayan de Oro-destroying properties and crops in the process.

"Kung magbaha way trabaho mahimo. Patay ang tanum, ma-ong way makaon (If there's flood you can't do anything. Crops are destroyed and there's nothing to eat)," said the 52-year-old farmer, whose house along the coastal part of Gingoog was also destroyed by big waves last year. Destructive waves are common in Misamis Oriental's coastal area being near the storm belt of the Visayas.

Some devotees interviewed by this paper believe their devotion to the Black Nazarene can rive away bad luck and bring prosperity.

This year's estimated number of devotees has more than doubled compared last year. It remains a far cry from the Quiapo festival, where an estimated two million devotees poured in during Saturday's profession, killing two and injuring five others.

In Cagayan de Oro, where the annual festival is only its second year, police said the procession had been orderly.

"Very orderly and peaceful naman. We thank the devotees for their cooperation," said the newly-installed City Police Director Benedicto Lopez, who personally oversaw the 300-men security detail for the whole procession.

The procession started at the St. Agustine Cathedral at around 4 p.m. and reached its final destination at Nazareno Parish around 7 p.m.

Police and medical volunteers were on sight throughout the procession. As the mass ended, the callejeron-where the replica of the Black Nazarene was placed-was about to be lifted by the Hijos of the Black Nazarene of Cagayan de Oro but they failed: thousands had already converged in every corner of the cathedral.
It took close to an hour for the image to finally move but, soon as it did, there was no stopping it as the police cordoned its perimeter to keep the crowd at bay.

As the Black Nazarene passed the streets, devotees lining the roadsides shouted "Viva Señor Nazareno" and threw confetti.

Kenya's Tanui and Cagayan's Tolentino rule Cebu City Marathon
By Caecent No-ot Magsumbol (The Freeman) Updated January 11, 2010 12:00 AM

CEBU, Philippines

- Running on unfamiliar territory turned out so well for Kenyan Wily Tanui, while Cagayan de Oro’s Aileen Tolentino pulled one big surprise in the premiere 42-kilometer race of the Cebu City Marathon, which started and finished yesterday at the Asiatown IT Park in Brgy. Apas, this city.

Incidentally, Cebu’s top bets in Kenyan missionary Simon Losiaboi and the Zamboanga-native Mary Grace de los Santos both missed the title and just landed in their respective divisions.

Like Losiaboi, the 6-foot-1 Tanui competed for the first in a full-marathon and the latter made it nothing less than a very memorable one. Tanui completed the lung-busting tiff in two hours, 30 minutes and 59 seconds, two seconds shy from the time registered in his chip.

“In the Philippines , I love Cebu. I love the weather, I love the friendly people, and I love it because I won,” said an obviously ecstatic Tanui, who pocketed P50,000 for his feat.

Tanui, Losiaboi and five others were leading the pack right after reaching the 21K mark. In the final 10 kilometers , Tanui and Losiaboi broke away until Eric Panique, a runner from Negros Oriental, caught up with them.

Feeling his legs on the verge of cramps, Losiaboi decided to let go of Tanui with only two kilometres left as he could not afford to risk it all when he has no experience on the full marathon.

“I did not have enough training. He (Tanui) had more endurance. I also lacked the speed work, so I resist to breast with him,” said Losiaboi, who clocked in 2:32:22 based on the time recorded in his chip to edge out Panique by a mere one second.

Inspite of his failed title bid, Losiaboi got warm hugs and cheers from the spectators and fellow Kenyans as he did around a 25-meter sprint with another runner he later realized was a 21K and not a 42K.

Panique came out as the best Filipino finisher at third.

Another Kenyan entry in David Kipkoech Kipsang wound up fourth, while Manila-based Bald Runner’s Elmer Sabal landed fifth with the time of 2:37:23.

Cebu's Mendel Lopez could only make it to sixth place in 2:39:17, while Bacolod’s Jeson Agravante landed seventh in 2:41:41. Rounding up the top 10 finishers were Rene Desuyo (2:51:15), Rohildo Iso (2:56:40) and Cebuano Elmo Clarabal (2:59:23).

In the distaff side, Tolentino finally lashed back at De los Santos by pushing herself on a sprint finish in the final 50 meters.

Tolentino posted the time of 3:15:31, while De los Santos reach the finish line in 3:15:44. Miscelle Gilbuena took the third place honors in 3:22:08 while Bacolod ’s Hannah Jean Delfin placed fourth in 3:23:41 followed by Kenyan Susan Jemutai Chepwony in 3:38:17.

Filling up the top 10 cast were Jennylyn Nobleza (3:41:38), Jessica Soco (4:02:58), Mareeiz Ramirez (4:03:32), Dumaguete’s Melinda Ponce(4:23:57) and Manila ’s Cristina Narvaez (4:24:33).

Madelyn Carter, on the other hand, became the saving grace for the Cebuanos as she topped the women's 21K run in one hour, 10 minures and 51 seconds.

Leiszl Lumindas-Gitaruelas came out second in 1:31:55, while Aileen’s sister Ellen salvaged the third spot in 1:36:58.

Emily Chiongbian ended up fourth in 1:43:11, while Lorhiz Echavez settled for fifth. The sixth to 10th finishers were Joyette Jopson (1:45:43), Jennifer Belacura (1:46:41), Kaye Lopez (1:50:23), Amale Jopson (1:55:39) and Irish Belleza (1:55:43).

In the men's 21K, Alquin Bolivar emerged as the fastest in 1:12:02, while Crifrankredeal Indapan placed second in 1:12:11 followed by Gerald Sabal (1:13:46).

The fourth to 10th were Willy Rotich (1:14:47), Revodeem Aranas (1:15:45), Jess Gonzaga (1:16:34), Rio dela Cruz (1:17:09), Reprinel Banzon (1:17:43), Bonifacio Monjas (1:18:15) and Riez Enriquez(1:19:16).

The 5K run in the Cebu Executive Runners Club (CERC) and ASAP-organized event saw Joel Delposo and Mary Joy Tabal ruling their respective classes. – THE FREEMAN

Below is the statement from Ayala’s SEC Third Quarter Report for 2009.

“Ayala Lands Visayas-Mindanao revenues improved by 53% to P147 million in the first nine months of 2009 from P96 million during the same period last year. Most of the revenue growth came from increasing percentage completion at Alegria and from higher bookings in new phases of Plantazionne Verdana Homes (PVH). NOI contribution was P18 million, less than 1% total.“

I wonder what would be Ayala’s SEC Fourth Quarter Report. :)

i seems to me like ayala's alegria hills is selling after all.

But according to "them," Ayala's alegria hills is not selling after all, and this is the reason that Ayala won't build up a regional mall.:D

A giant investor like Ayala wouldn't take risk in the first place to invest their billions of money in the said city if sales are low or the market is not that big IN THE LONG RUN. Ayalas have wise consultants/personal agents after all. Their agents even live in the city in the first place for many years just to have a very comprehensive feasibility study about the city that Ayala firm is going to invest. :D

Who is that "pretender," who has been so proud that he is connected with the Ayalas? Well, he is nothing but just bringing bad image to Ayala firm. :D

Total population rose to 748,885 persons

Misamis Oriental (excluding Cagayan de Oro City) posted a total population of 748,885 persons as of August 1, 2007. This registered an increase of 84,547 persons over the total population of 664,338 persons in 2000. The 2007 figure translated to an annual population growth rate of 1.67 percent for the period 2000 to 2007.

The number of households rose by 20,847 from 132,042 in 2000 to 152,889 in 2007. The average household size in 2007 was 4.9 persons, a slight decrease from the 2000 average household size of 5.0 persons.

Gingoog City was the biggest in terms of population size

Among the 2 cities and 23 municipalities in the province of Misamis Oriental (excluding Cagayan de Oro City), Gingoog City (15.0 percent) was the most populated, followed by the municipalities of Balingasag (7.7 percent) and Tagoloan (7.5 percent). Binuangan (0.9 percent) was the least populated municipality.

http://www.census.gov.ph/data/pressrelease/2010/pr1020f1.gif
Figure 1

More males than females

The household population in Misamis Oriental had 383,533 males and 364,240 females, which resulted to a sex ratio of 105 males for every 100 females. Likewise, in 2000, there were more males than females, or a sex ratio of 104 males for every 100 females.

Median age was 21 years

Misamis Oriental recorded a median age of 21 years in 2007. This means that half of the household population was below 21 years old. The median age in 2000 was 20 years.

The proportion to total household population of persons under 15 years old was 36.9 percent. Age group 0 to 4 years had the highest share at 12.6 percent, followed by those in age groups 5 to 9 years (12.3 percent) and 10 to 14 years (12.0 percent).

http://www.census.gov.ph/data/pressrelease/2010/pr1020f2.gif
Figure 2

There were more males than females in the age brackets 0 to 59 years. On the other hand, females outnumbered males in age groups 60 years old and over.

More males than females in the voting-age population

More than half (56.2 percent) of the household population in Misamis Oriental were of voting ages (18 years and over). This was slightly higher than the proportion of voting-age population (55.3 percent) recorded in 2000. The proportion of males (51.2 percent) to the total voting-age population was higher than that of the females (48.8 percent) in 2007.

Dependency ratio declined to 71

The proportion of household population belonging to age group 0 to 14 years was 36.9 percent. The oldest group (65 years and over) posted a share of 4.6 percent while the working-age population (15 to 64 years) had a share of 58.5 percent of the household population.

The overall dependency ratio in Misamis Oriental in 2007 was 70.9. This means that for every 100 persons aged 15 to 64 years, there were about 71 dependents (63 young dependents and 8 old dependents). The dependency ratio in 2007 was lower compared to the 2000 ratio of 73 persons per 100 working-age population.

Seven out of ten females were widowed

In 2007, more than two-fifths (44.3 percent) of the household population 10 years old and over were never-married, while 46.5 percent were married. The proportion of never-married persons in 2007 was slightly lower than that in 2000 (44.5 percent). In contrast, the proportion of married persons in 2007 was higher compared to that in 2000 (45.4 percent). Moreover, there was an increase in the proportion of persons who were widowed from 3.9 percent in 2000 to 4.3 percent in 2007 and those divorced/separated from 0.9 percent in 2000 to 1.1 percent in 2007.

A higher proportion (55.6 percent) of males among never-married persons was observed in 2007. On the other hand, females dominated the categories for married (50.4 percent), widowed (72.9 percent), divorced/separated (57.0 percent), and those in common law/live-in marital status (50.5 percent).

More females pursued higher levels of education

Of the household population five years old and over, 39.7 percent attended or completed elementary education, 34.0 percent reached or completed high school, 7.4 percent were college undergraduates, and 6.4 percent were academic degree holders.

Among academic degree holders and among those with post baccalaureate courses, majority were females: academic degree holders, 57.8 percent and post baccalaureate degree holders, 55.9 percent.

Among the household population 5 to 24 years old, 64.1 percent attended school at anytime during School Year 2007 to 2008. There were more males (50.8 percent) than females (49.2 percent) who attended school during the said school year.

101 households for every 100 occupied housing units

A total of 152,889 households resided in 151,163 housing units in Misamis Oriental. This translated to a ratio of 101 households for every 100 occupied housing units or 4.9 persons per occupied housing unit. In 2000, the ratio of households to occupied housing units was 101 households for every 100 occupied housing units or 5.1 persons per occupied housing units.

Proportion of occupied housing units with roofs and outer walls made of strong materials increased

Most of the occupied housing units in Misamis Oriental had roofs made of galvanized iron/aluminum (76.1 percent), up by 6.0 percentage points from the proportion in 2000. Meanwhile, one out of five (20.6 percent) of the occupied housing units in 2007 had outer walls made of concrete/brick/stone, indicating an increase of 3.8 percentage points from the 2000 figure of 16.8 percent.

well, if P700 is expensive to you, then we can call that expensive.

But Philippine whitewater rafting rates is peanuts compared to overseas rates. Unless of course you go rafting in North Luzon. Their rates are comparable to overseas rates. And it's a "multi-day" rafting because access is difficult.....

Unlike in CDO wherein the rapids is only about 25-30 minutes jeepney ride from DVsoria. Can't complain on that...

Transport from DVsoria to put-in and from take-out to DVsoria are already included.
They can even pick you up from your hotel (within CBD limits).

All rafting outfitter's transport are Jeepneys.

If you are lucky with the Great Whitewater Tours, you can catch their AirCon L300. they also do Pinoy Tubing (put-in at Kabula, take-out at Taguanao).

Transport for whitewater kayaking with KayakDomain.com is Starex aircon. Limited number of clients, ratio of 2-3 clients per guide for more safety.

Italians to invest in 5 provinces in 2010

MANILA, Philippines—Developer ItalPinas Inc. is pouring in hundred millions of investment in five provinces in the country this year by constructing eco-friendly buildings.

Romolo Nati, chief executive officer of ItalPinas, said his company already started the construction of a ten-story condominium in Cagayan De Oro City which is expected to be completed in 14 months or by early 2011.

The more than 1,000-square meter property in Cagayan has a total investment of P180 million and the first Green building to be constructed in Asia and in the entire province of Mindanao.

Nati said his company is also targeting to build the same facility in Palawan, Mindoro, General Santos, and Davao, which shows great potential for property development.

Asked why his company has chosen the provinces instead of Metro Manila, Nati said Metro Manila is already congested.

“We did a market survey [before we started the project] and we like Cagayan de Oro because it has higher middle class market, not to mention its fast-growing economy,” Nati said.

”We are not into Metro Manila because our idea is to focus in the provinces,” he added.

According to Nati, since their units are sold lower than P3 million, more Filipinos are expected to buy condo units whose designs are tailored in Europe. Another plus factor for ItalPinas buildings, he said, is that they can produce they own energy through the use of a special solar panel “to maximize and optimize energy use.”

“Our goal is to reduce energy consumption…. Our building will save around 33 percent of energy,” he said.

Nati said his company targets the overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) market and the migrants abroad.

Currently, there are over eight million OFWs employed in 194 countries and majority of them are in the United States, Middle East, Canada, Hong Kong, and in Europe.

ItalPinas is a partnership between an Italian firm and the Constellation Energy Corp. headed by its chairman Jose P. Leviste Jr.

Nati said that for future projects, the company plans to enter into joint venture agreements with other companies in the country.

ItalPinas also plans to tap local banks for their funding requirements should its other survey yield positive results.

”At present we are talking with some private investors,” Nati said adding that with the “market seems to be very good, we may not need bank financing.” [inquirer.net (http://globalnation.inquirer.net/news/breakingnews/view/20100112-246857/Italians-to-invest-in-5-provinces-in-2010)]

"...higher middle class..." hmmmmm, i'm not one of that....

the middle class should HELP RELOCATE the squatters/illegal settlers living in the riverbanks all the way to Macabalan.

And develop the riverbank for PUBLIC ACCESS....NOT for PRIVATE USE. i.e. 15 meters from waters edge is PUBLIC ACCESS.

CDO should showcase the Clean and Green, Fresh and Pristine, Class A Cagayan (de Oro) river.

This is for ALL Cagaya-anons and visitors to enjoy today and in the future.
