TRIVIA: DON'T YOU KNOW THAT CAGAYAN DE ORO FIRST TO HAVE AUTOMOBILE IN SOUTHERN PHILIPPINES?

In 1901 the first automobile arrived in Cagayan when Iloilo and Cebu had none, and this car was owned by Mr. Tirso Neri, the richest man in this province at that time.

Oro earns P1.4 billion in 2006

FISCAL year 2006 was one of the finest year in Cagayan de Oro City as it posted a remarkable 22.65 percent increase in income over that of the previous year.

City Treasurer Lino Daral disclosed that the City Government's income in 2006 was pegged at P1,401,915,239.57, which is P317,548,973.31 higher than the P1,084,366,266.26 income in 2005.

Daral said last year's income was mainly generated from local tax and non-tax revenue sources.

The tax revenue sources came from real property tax (P108,255,495.45), business tax (P275,113,900.93) and other taxes (P26,513,186.35).

While the non-tax revenue sources were derived from collection in regulatory fees (P20,308,926.74), service users charges (P32,588,991.78), receipts from economic enterprise (P70,532,445.61), other receipts (P1,440,962.68), share from national tax collection (P585,566,290.12) and other sources (P194,787,680.34).

The total income for general fund is P1,315,107,879.92 while the special education fund is P86,807,359.65.

With the high income posted in 2006, the city treasurer thanked the city's taxpayers for their cooperation and confidence in the City Government.

Daral stressed that the trust and confidence shown by the Cagayanons in promptly paying their tax obligations is a positive sign for Mayor Vicente Y. Emano's budgetary thrusts and reforms along fiscal management programs of the local government. (CIO)

FrancisXavier
February 4th, 2007, 06:04 AM
so what's the difference between glass cladding, curtain glass, and glass facade? :)

WawaY[625]
February 4th, 2007, 06:45 AM
heres as far as i can differentiate/define them

CURTAIN WALL(GLASS) - non-bearing wall yan attached sa exterior ng building..usually ang supporting mebers nakadikit sa beam or slab..not necessary glass (pero pag curtain glass di glass yun lols..)

GLASS CLADDING - same as curtain wall (i think)

GLASS FACADE- well, a facade is the exterior of the building, technically a building with CURTAIN GLASS WALLS has a GLASS FACADE, pero a building that has a GLASS FACADE does not necessarily mean na CURTAIN GLASS ang system ng pagka install ng Glass sa building...gets :)

as far as i understand GLASS CURTAIN WALL/CLADDING is a building system/technique..GLASS FACADE is a description nung exterior nung building (thus by saying na may glass facade yung building, noticeable ang amount ng glass na ginamit sa exterior / theme ng building with regards to the overall design)

FrancisXavier
February 4th, 2007, 06:47 AM

but since curtain glass windows "clad" the building with glass, claddin gihapon to :) of course separating the two (curtain glass) for glass, and aluminum cladding for aluminum composite panels sounds more appropriate :)

curtain glass ang tawag if it uses the aluminum profile... substantial to named as a curtain glass usually from floor to floor on different sizes and medium of glass usage (kay depende pa sa glass ang gamiton).

im referring to the definitions as per DK ching's Dicitonary of Architecture..i think your definition is more on the technically in-depth definition..

When we say curtain wall, it doesnt mean glass agad, pwede din namang curtain wall kahit cement (pre fab panels na dinidikit sa structural members ng building) basta ang system employed is under the definition ng curtain wall system..and yes kadalasan naman talaga ng Curtain Glass eh aluminum ang gamit :)

as for cladding, unless we say aluminum cladding (which is the most common form) basta i clad niya ang building, as per "loose" definition ng "cladding" which is the wrapping of a building, cladding gihapon to siya :) IMHO

when we made the plans for DCWD building in Matina, we used glass and aluminum composite panels, suffice it to say, DCWD used Curtain Glass and Aluminum cladding for its Facade :)

and what about the EIFS system that we used sa NCCC Mall matina? by definition Curtain Wall gihapon to maski dili glass since it is under the "basic" definition of Curtain walls which is

The curtain wall is defined in terms of its functional relationship to the building's structure. It then refers to the cladding, or enclosure, of a building as something both separate from and attached to the building's skeletal framework.

heres an interesting read on curtain walls:

http://people.cornell.edu/pages/jo24/comments/curtainwall.html

as to "Glass Cladding" naman, basing sa definition ng curtain wall, ang curtain glass, IMHO, is glass cladding sab :) pero "cladding" is a very "loose" definition so its more appropriate to say Curtain Glass wall (if curtain wall system ang gigamit :))

Union workers file port strike notice
By Lizanilla J. Amarga

UNION laborers Friday filed a notice of strike against Cagayan de oro City billionaire port's exclusive cargo handling firm Oroport Cargohandling Service Inc. (Oroport).

But Oroport president Franklin Siao in a statement to Sun.Star Cagayan de Oro countered that these union workers are only creating a "smokescreen" to hide the "serious acts of misconduct" committed by their members.

The Associated Labor Unions-TUCP (ALU-TUCP) regional vice-president Nicandro Borja said their affiliate Phase II Port Workers Union (PPWU) has now filed a notice of strike with the regional office of the National Conciliation and Mediation Board (NCMB).

He said they could not as yet set an exact date on when the strike would actually be conducted, as there is still the 150-day cooling period and a seven-day strike balloting.

"There will still be a hearing with the NCMB. They will be calling for one soon," he said.

The notice of strike was accomplished on February 1 and filed Friday at around 0 a.m. It was signed PPWU-ALU-TUCP president Arturo Climaco. They cited unfair labor practices as their grounds to initiate a strike.

Climaco said the unfair labor practices committed by Oroport management include "discrimination" in the "imposition of disciplinary actions or dismissal of union officers and members without valid grounds."

Sanctions

The PPWU-ALU-TUCP members are allegedly dismissed outright even on petty causes.

But Siao said such allegations are just part of a "strategy" to create a "smokescreen to hide the fact that several employees who happened to be members of PPWU-ALU-TUCP have committed acts of serious misconduct."

He then enumerated how PPWU-ALU-TUCP members were engaged in "unauthorized disposal of damaged cargoes, repeated transgression of established company rules and code of conduct and willful disobedience."

"Also, unauthorized collection of cargo handling service charges," he said, citing "moonlighting and performing personal business activities during company time."

Siao said these cases are classified by law as "just causes and therefore not grievable issues."

He said some of these cases were already filed by the terminated employees before the Regional Arbitration branch of the Department of Labor and Employment for Mandatory Conciliation and Mediation Conference on February 21, 2007.

"Other termination cases are the result of the installation of labor-saving device, which is authorized by law," he said.

Siao said their employee code of discipline is applied to all employees and workers of Oroport.

"Disciplinary actions are imposed on the basis of their violations and not because they are your members," he said.

But Climaco said there was also discrimination in "giving assignment of details to workers."

"Hired workers are given priority than PPWU-ALU-TUCP members," he said.

But Siao said he is "saddened" by how PPWU-ALU-TUCP brought this issue as it shows that its officers "are not aware that these matters have been resolved."

"Again, please don't allow yourself to be placed in a pit where some of your members want you to be embarrassed," he said.

Grievances

Climaco accused Oroport management of "pressuring the ALU members to resign through provocation and transfer from one position to another."

But Siao said, "Resignation is a voluntary action on the part of the worker. This is purely an action of the worker and the company has no participation as this is voluntary in nature."

Climaco also accused Oroport of refusing to implement the grievance machinery under the collective bargaining agreement (CBA).

Siao on this matter said in his letter that he fully agrees with Climaco that the grievance machinery be "operational as this is the venue to ventilate issues and rectify shortcomings."

Climaco said Oroport management has barred PPWU-ALU-TUCP from collecting the Agency Fee, Pakyaw Share, and other customary fees from the non-members.

Siao said, "While the company is strict in imposing discipline, it is not the company culture to dictate upon the workers to exercise their options with regards to this issue."

3 NorMin infra projects done by 2007, DPWH-10 bares

Cagayan de Oro City (2 February) -- Three major infrastructure projects in Northern Mindanao are set to be completed by this year, an official from the Department of Public Works and Highways Region 10 (DPWH-10) said recently.

Marichu N. Lago, Public Relations Officer II of DPWH-10 said in a statement that construction of the Cagayan de Oro Convention and Civic Center, Puntod-Kauswagan Bridge and the Tagoloan Parallel Bridge are seen to wrap up on various dates throughout the year.

The Cagayan de Oro Convention and Civic Center is the first ever world class Trade and Convention Center being constructed in Mindanao. It was implemented utilizing the Design-Construct Scheme and is ideal for national, international and trade exhibits, as well as seminars and conventions.

Boasting of a 7,700 seating capacity, the Convention Center has several amenities like a multi-purpose hall that could accommodate 1,000 guests, a convertible indoor playing court, an exhibit area for 1,500 viewing guests with demountable partition for flexibility of expansion, 12 function rooms for 1,000 guests, 4 clubrooms with lockers and showers, cafeteria with approximately 100 seating capacity, and an administrative office, storage room and other support facilities.

With a few more works to be done on time, the project is expected to be completed on November 4, 2007.

Meanwhile, the Puntod-Kauswagan Bridge is being constructed across the Cagayan de Oro River connecting Barangays Puntod and Kauswagan, Cagayan de Oro City. The scope of work includes the construction of 352 meters long four (4) lanes Pre-stressed Concrete Bridge. The access road, including both approaches, will link the City Port Road in Puntod, with the National Highway in Opol, Misamis Oriental. The project involves the concreting of 8.465 kilometers four (4) lanes concrete road pavement and construction of Reinforced Concrete Deck Girder (RCDG) Bridge over Iponan River at Barangay Iponan.

The bridge structure is already 100% completed. Ongoing works are focused on the construction of road approaches, provision of lighting facilities, painting of the structure, and partial construction of Y-Interchange type road, after the approaches. The project is seen to be completed by CY 2007.

On the other hand, the Tagoloan Parallel Bridge is constructed beside the existing Tagoloan Steel Truss Bridge extended with Reinforced Concrete Deck Girder (RCDG) Bridge. It is a two-lane bridge with a length of 529.30 LM and with a 1.266 kms two-lane Portland Cement Concrete Pavement (PCCP) Approaches. The structure is located along the Iligan-Cagayan de Oro-Butuan Road (ICBR), Tagoloan, Misamis Oriental, and considered as a very vital bridge project in that side of the province.

With the bridge proper now completed, the work on both approaches is ongoing, and the contractor, Grace Construction, is expected to finish within the year.

The three projects are seen to complement the expected growth along the ICBR, which is foreseen to pick up even more upon completion of yet another project, the Laguindingan International Airport, in Laguindingan town, Misamis Oriental. (DPWH-10) [top]

National earthquake drill set Feb. 8
by Rutchie Cabahug-Aguhob

Cagayan de Oro City (2 February) -- A nationwide earthquake drill will be simultaneously held February 8, 2007 to prepare the people in case incidents of similar nature will occur in the future, the Regional Disaster Coordinating Council (RCDCC), region 10, announced.

“The RDCC finds the drill very important since it will serve as a guide on what people should do and so they will not be caught off guard whenever an earthquake occurs in their localities,” Regional Director Carmelito Lupo of the Office of Civil Defense (OCD) and Chief Executive Officer of RDCC-10, said.

The same drill was conducted in September 2006 in selected schools and government buildings. Instead of holding it once a year, however, it will now be done quarterly.

Lupo, who replaced Ret. Col. Salvador Estudillo when Estudillo got assigned to head OCD-8 in Eastern Samar, said this time, the local government units and the private sector will be involved.

Last year, the drill was conducted at the Department of Education (DepEd) and the Misamis Oriental General Comprehensive High School (MOCGHS), Bldgs. along A. Velez St., SM City, Upper Carmen and Liceo de Cagayan University High School (LCDUHS), Carmen Proper, all of Cagayan de Oro City.

What RDCC would like to find out is whether the drill participants will be able to hear the sound of the sirens, and the extent of their practice of the “duck, cover and hold” technique during the Alarm Phase A while the siren is being sounded.

It will also show whether they were able to evacuate during the Alarm Phase B or if they waited for the siren to stop before evacuating and whether they have followed their designated routes to evacuation area or whether they ran, walked casually or walked faster than normal during the evacuation phase.

“Evacuation phase muna tayo, wala munang rehabilitation! (We have to focus on evacuation first, not yet on rehabilitation phase) because it is very important during earthquakes for the people to know where to go and familiarize these routes,” Lupo said.

The drill is also expected to answer questions like: Did the participants bring with them any first aid kit or any item noticeable during the evacuation phase? Or, were they able to conduct the headcount during the headcount phase? And is the evacuation area big enough to accommodate the evacuees?

Other details that the drill seeks to answer are: Was there any problem observed during the drill that might need to be addressed? How long did it take for all the participants to vacate the building and reach the designated evacuation area?

Were they able to stay in the evacuation area? Did they move to other places or did they go back to the building without instructions?

“Any untoward incident observed during the drill should also be noted so it can be avoided in the succeeding exercises,” Lupo added. (PIA 10) [top]

CAGAYAN DE ORO and Misamis Oriental Thread 11

Cagayan de Oro is a bustling regional trade and commercial center, the hub of Northern Mindanao and transshipment point to various key destinations; Cebu in the Central Philippines; Manila, the national capital; and neighboring Asian markets. The city's strong regional orientation is reflected in its large concentration of service industries, government offices, banks, and the facilities of some of the most successful multinational corporations, including Del Monte, Coca-Cola, Nestle, and San Miguel just to name a few.

The PHIVIDEC Industrial Authority (PIA) was created by Presidential Decree No. 538, as amended by PD 1491 on August 13, 1974.

It is a government corporation vested with special powers to establish, develop and professionally administer and/or operate industrial areas and the ports and utilities inside such areas. The objective is to catalyze a faster development in Northern Mindanao and to pursue the Government's policy to disperse industries to the country side as a means of equitably distributing resources.

The first industrial area administered by PIA is the 3,000-hectare PHIVIDEC Industrial Estate in Misamis Oriental (PIE-MO). In 1994, the Philippines Government designated PIE-MO as the hub and showcase of its flagship program for industrialization in Northern Mindanao, the Cagayan de Oro-Iligan Corridor Special Development Project.

One important infrastructure project pursued by PIA for a fast-paced development in Northern Mindanao is the Mindanao Container Terminal (MCT) located in PIE-MO.

In administering and initially operating MCT. the goal of PIA is to establish MCT as a container port of international standards that would address the need of shippers to efficiently transport their cargoes not only to and from PIE-MO but also those coming in and out of the other places in Mindanao, into the BIMP-EAGA Region, as well as in the Asia-Pacific Region.

LAGUINDINGAN INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT

http://i119.photobucket.com/albums/o157/francisxavier9501/Laguindinganairport.jpg

Laguindingan International Airport is an international airport that is currently under construction in Laguindingan, Misamis Oriental in the Philippines. This airport will cater international flights, mostly for Cagayan de Oro and other cities in Northern Mindanao.

The airport is a flagship project of the Cagayan de Oro-Iligan Corridor special development project, which covers the two key Mindanao cities of Iligan and Cagayan de Oro, five coastal towns of Lanao del Norte and the 14 towns of Misamis Oriental's first congressional district. It is located 46 km. from the Lumbia Airport in Cagayan de Oro.
Background
Plans for the airport have existed since 1991, but have been stymied by land acquisition and financing problems.

Groundbreaking ceremonies on the US$107 million project were held on January 11, 2006 and attended by President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.

KNOWN AS THE CITY OF GOLDEN FRIENDSHIP, Cagayan de Oro has been cited by two Philippine leading think tanks for the vast potentials it holds for investors and businessmen who manage to see beyond the fabled warmth and hospitality of its residents.

Roberto de Vera, author and regional studies director of the University of Asia and the Pacific (UA&P),cited Cagayan de Oro as the best positioned for future growth and investments among 23 leading urban regional cities of the Philippines.

Investment Center

http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g283/boju4289/200603_Mindanao.jpg

In his 2000 paper "Investing in Regional Cities: the Next Big Thing," de Vera describes how Cagayan de Oro is not only the gateway to Northern Mindanao region, but is its regional shopping center as well.

Although it ranked only 16th among the 23 cities in the study in Gross City Domestic Product (GCDP) with P4.93 billion, it led all others in investments with P16.5 billion. It was also the only city in Mindanao among the top five cited by the study in investments posted with the Board of Investments (BOI) in 1999.

Focused Vision

http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g283/boju4289/img_0022_gaston_park1.jpg

Cagayan de Oro was also cited in a 2000 study by the Washington Sycip Policy Forum -- a think tank of the Asian Institute of Management -- because of its "focused vision for its economic future."

The study said Cagayan de Oro's competitiveness was enhanced by its strong economic ties such as with the Northern and Central Visayas regions, Cagayan de Oro-Iligan Corridor (CIC), and the Brunei Darussalam-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines East ASEAN Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA).

Although other regional centers like Davao were also progressive, its average household income from 1994 to 1997 dropped 10%, while those of Cagayan de Oro and General Santos increased.

Infrastructure Support

http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g283/boju4289/normin/Slide27.jpg

http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g283/boju4289/solarplant3.jpg

Another unique feature of Cagayan de Oro is the way by which its strong real estate property development is balanced by inter-regional infrastructure development such as the Laguindingan international standard airport, Mindanao International Container Port, Tubod-Tangub bridge and widening of its Iligan-Cagayan de Oro-Bukidnon Road (ICBR), the road artery which links it to key satellite areas.

With over 100 subdivisions containing 80,000 lots covering over 1,000 hectares and counting, the real estate boom in the city is likewise balanced by intercity infrastructure such as the planned construction of three additional bridges across the Cagayan river, Licoan flyover and the East and West coast public utility terminals aimed at loosening the city's tightening gridlock.

Wide Consumer Base

http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g283/boju4289/cdo_nyt.jpg

Which is just as well, since although Cagayan de Oro city itself only has half a million residents, it serves a consumer base of well over three million people covering the five provinces (Bukidnon, Camiguin, Lanao del Norte, Misamis Occidental and Misamis Occidental) and six cities (Cagayan de Oro, Gingoog, Iligan, Oroquieta, Ozamiz, and Tangub) of Region 10 (Northern Mindanao) as its regional shopping center.

Already, SM City and rival Big R Super Center have set up mixed-use shopping malls to rival Gaisano's three malls and the local titans Ororama and Limketkai which all boast of department stores, concessionaires, national food chains and cinemas equal if not better than similar stores in other booming regional centers like Cebu, Bacolod and Davao.

Industrial Parks

Besides retailers, light and medium industries are also finding Cagayan de Oro and its satellite areas an ideal home with its mix of affordable industrial parks, reliable and affordably priced utilities, and central location linked to the rest of the country and the ASEAN region with seamless transportation and communications.

The 3,000-hectare PHIVIDEC Industrial Estate-Misamis Orientalis the country's largest, with the 200-hectare First Cagayan de Oro Business Park and the 80-hectare Alwana Business Park now online. Three others are in the pipeline: Laguindingan Industrial Park, El Salvador Economic Zone, and Gingoog Special Economic Zone.

Already, 19 light and medium industries are operating in Cagayan de Oro, the largest of which are Del Monte Philippines, Inc. and Nestlé Philippines, Inc.'sASEAN regional manufacturing center for coffee and milk powder. Another 30 or so industries are operating in the Phividec Industrial Estate-Misamis Oriental.

Exports Boom In large part due to this mix of industrial infrastructure and locational advantages, exports topped the US$200-million mark in 2001 as downstream industries, taking advantage of the city's proximity to the agriculture powerhouse Bukidnon, churned out an increasingly diverse array of products to complement the region's predominantly coconut-and-pineapple export base.

Telecom

Another reason for the continued increase in exports and gross city domestic product are Cagayan de Oro's recent and planned transportation and communications projects through which the lifeblood of this regional dynamo flows. Already served by five telephone local exchange centers (LECs), and four mobile phone companies, the present 65,000 land lines are set to double by another 50,000 in the next two years, further boosting teledensity beyond 10 phones per 100 persons. Two paging networks and nine Internet service providers provide pinpoint local and global reach.

Improved Services

http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g283/boju4289/arriba.jpg

On top of this, 122 banks and 203 public and private schools provide support services, accounting for over half the region's total for both categories. Health services are equally impressive: Eleven public and private hospitals provide over 1,500 beds -- half the total in Region 10.

These are further backed by some 49 barangay health centers, 66 family planning clinics, and over 200 medical and dental clinics. Medical facilities include world-class institutions like the Northern Mindanao Heart Center and Mindanao Eye Center.

Multicultural Peace

http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g283/boju4289/conc1.jpg

Tourism is another sunrise industry. Regional and national convention-goers find irresistible the city's close proximity of hotels and accommodations, wide variety of easily accessible exotic tourism destinations and amenities including an 18-hole world class golf course and a country club.

Not the least, the leisure industry appears to be crossing even political and ideological lines as Cagayan de Oro has been relatively spared the rash of violence which has rocked Mindanao's urban centers as of late. Although its peace and order situation is by no means impeccable, still it has been spared the wholesale bombings and killings many have come to associate with Mindanao.

The most logical explanation for this is multicultural harmony: Despite the diversity of beliefs and ideological convictions, residents share the same admiration and affection for the City of Golden Friendship, the city that has become a home even to migrants and ever-increasing number of visitors over the years.

Why Region 10 Should be Renamed Misamis?

An article from Kagay-an.com made a case why Region 10 or popularly known as Northern Mindanao Region be renamed into the “Misamis Region.”

MISAMIS : The Glory behind the Name (or Why Region 10 Should be Renamed Misamis) By October 10 this year, it will be seven years since the Region 10 Tourism Council passed a resolution asking the national government to rename Northern Mindanao as the “Misamis” region.

The motion was passed following a presentation by Commissioner Antonio J. Montalvan II of the Cagayan de Oro Historical and Cultural Commission during the council’s 5th general assembly October 2, 1999 at Gingoog City.

Montalvan’s presentation was based on his paper “Resurgence of Identity: The Heritage of Misamis, 1818-1945″ tracing the Misamis region’s rich cultural and historical heritage from the times of the Himologan settlement at the Huluga caves site dating back to the Late Neolithic Age or 377 A.D. down to contemporary history in World War II when Cagayan de Misamis (as Cagayan de Oro was then known) and Bukidnon became rallying points for the underground resistance against the Japanese invaders.

Montalvan writes that the Misamis region had its beginnings during the early 1800s when the Spanish government decided to pacify Mindanao. The island was made into one province with Zamboanga as its capital. It was divided into three politico-military districts under the administration of a military governor: the Primero Distrito de Zamboanga, Segundo Distrito de Misamis and Tercio Distrito de Surigao.

The largest of these was the Segundo Distrito de Misamis which covered present day Zamboanga del Norte, the Lanao and Misamis provinces, Camiguin, Bukidnon, and the northern portions of Cotabato and Maguindanao.

The Misamis district was further subdivided into four: the Partido de Misamis, Partido de Dapitan, Partido de Cagayan, and Partido de Catarman.

It was named Misamis after its capital town at the mouth of Panguil Bay, now Ozamiz city. Here, the Spanish Jesuit Jose Ducos built the Fuerza Real de la Virgen del Triunfo as a fortress against Moro raiders who had to pass through the narrow bay in their raids against Spanish and Filipino towns along the coast.

The Misamis district, particularly the Partido de Dapitan, is also significant historically because it was here where Filipino national hero Dr. Jose Rizal was exiled from 1892-1896. Montalvan cites the rich oral tradition which tells of Rizal’s famous friends, patients and visitors and his many sojourns around the region.

For instance, there was the Jesuit lay brother Juan Costa whose ” Aguas Potables” waterworks in Balingasag, Misamis Oriental became the inspiration for Rizal’s famous Talisay water system which still works to this day at the Rizal shrine in Dapitan.

Although it remains little known to this day, Misamis was the only region which actively joined the Katipunan revolt against Spain. On September 29, 1896, 350 revolucionarios, including 50 Bukidnon lumads, overwhelmed the Spanish garrison and raided the armory of the Fuerza Nueva Victoria in Iligan. Unable to seize Cagayan because of superior Spanish forces, the revolucionarios proceeded to Sumilao and marched down the coast where they commandeered a boat and landed in Balingasag.

From there the group stormed the Tercio Civil outpost in Gingoog where the uprising was finally put down in January 1897 with the help of reinforcements and a gunboat from Butuan.

Montalvan writes that although the Camiguin writer Vicente Elio y Sanchez wrote an account of it in the Manila newspaper “La Oceania Espańola”, it was censored by the Spaniards. Augustinian Recollect chronicles reveal that this revolt was in fact instigated by a communication from Katipuneros in Luzon, making Mindanao the ninth province to join the Katipunan revolt, albeit not included in the eight rays of the sun in the Philippine flag which represent the eight provinces which first rose against Spanish tyranny.

Misamis also became the first region in Mindanao to join the new Philippine Republic under Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo. On December 26, 1898, the new Filipino flag was borne aloft in a public demonstration for Philippine independence in the streets of Mambajao, Camiguin. And on January 10, 1899, Philippine independence was proclaimed with much fanfare in Cagayan de Misamis, which also elected the first set of local officials and officially raised the Filipino flag for only the second time ever in the island (the first was in Surigao).

During the Second World War, Misamis became a part of world history when Gen. Douglas MacArthur, supreme commander of the United States Armed Forces in the Far East (USAFFE) landed in Macabalan port in Cagayan de Misamis on March 13, 1942 after successfully escaping from invading Japanese forces in Corregidor in a flotilla of PT Boats.

He stayed over at the Del Monte compound in Bukidnon until March 17, 1942 when he and his family and a few of his staff were airlifted to Australia in two rickety B-17s. Around a week later, Phil. Commonwealth President Manuel L. Quezon and Vice President Sergio Osmeńa, Sr. also used the same route to escape from Corregidor to Australia.

Bukidnon added to the lore by becoming the headquarters of the Philippine government under Gen. Manuel A. Roxas during the early years of the war. It was also here where Gen. William Sharp became the last US general in the country to surrender to the Japanese.

Later, Col. Wendell W. Fertig, who led the guerrilla movement in Mindanao, and the United States Forces in the Philippines (USFIP) had their base and headquarters in the town of Oroquieta, Misamis Occidental.

Montalvan said this was significant because Oroquieta then was considered to be the capital of the entire Free Philippines, perhaps the only time in our country’s history when its capital was in Mindanao, in the region then known as Misamis.

Not the least, Montalvan cites the significance of Misamis in pre-history through the discovery of the Huluga caves in Cagayan de Oro city in the early 1970s. A fragment of a skull sent to the Scripps Institute in La Jolla, California for a dating technique known as acid racemization showed it dated back to 377 A.D.-30-

Diving Spots in Misamis Oriental and Camiguin

Diving experts have identified several areas in Misamis Oriental and Camiguin Island as ideal diving spots. According Raul Uy, a local diver, barracuda, jacks, wahoo, skipjack (bonito or tulingan) and tangigue abound in the waters of Macajalar Bay and Camiguin channel.

The top recommended dive spots in the area are the following:
1.Agutaya Reef, also known as White Island, Jasaan,
2. Constansia Reef,
3. Sipaka Point
4. Talisayan Shoal,
5.the Sta. Ines wreck dating back to World War II,
6. Medina underwater springs,
7.Punta Diwata, and Manongul, off Bgy. Mantangale, Balingoan, all in Misamis Oriental; and
8. Old Volcano, Sunken Cemetery, Jigdup and Burias Shoal, Cabuan Point and Mantigue Island in Camiguin.

Vice Governor Julio Uy to run for Governor of Misamis Oriental

Vice Gov. Julio Uy is joining the fray in the contest for the province top most position this coming polls. Earlier, incumbent Gov. Oscar Moreno and 2nd Dist. Rep Augusto Baculio are declaring their bids to run for Governor.

On January 4, 2007, 12 of the 24 Mayors of Misamis Oriental had a meeting with the Vice Governor to offer himself as an alternative candidate for Governor under the Padayon Pilipino party. The mayors include, Alubijid mayor Fortunato Jamis, Gitagum mayor Mary Jean Ajonan, Libertad mayor Enerito Acain III, Initao mayor Enerito J. Acain V, Naawan mayor Dennis Roa, Manticao mayor Lilith Jabla, Lugait mayor Willie Lim, Kinoguitan mayor Narciso Go, Sugbongcogon mayor Benedict Lagbas, Binuangan mayor Pastor Salarda, Balingasag mayor Felix Borromeo and Villanueva mayor Juliette Uy.

However, CDO Mayor Vicente Emano prefers Uy run as vice governor even if it means going independent as a candidate of PaDayon Pilipino rather than governor.

Talks from the political gossip vine had that Moreno orignally wants to return to his seat in the 1st Dist but it seems along the way, incumbent Congressman Danilo Lagbas dont want to vacate the said post and so as not to cross swords with each other both of them (Moreno and Lagbas) forged an alliance with both of them seeking re-election in their respective positions.

The alliance was aptly describe by Mayor Vicente Emano, “Kay kung mobalik si Moreno sa First District panington man gyud diha si Lagbas kay tibuok makinarya sa probinsya at the disposal ni Moreno (For if Moreno will opt to return as First District of Misamis Oriental congressman Lagbas will really be sweating it out as the entire machinery of the provincial government is at the disposal of Moreno)”

17 out of 24 Mayors of Mis. Or align with Baculio

Seems to me that the candidacy of Congressman Augusto “Jun” Baculio is gaining ground with the recent alignment of majority of the Mayors of the province. Baculio is the KAMPI bet for Governor and enjoys the full backing of Malacanang.

Its just quite disappointing for others when DILG Secreatry Puno commented that “Kampi is the dominant party in Misamis Oriental and will receive the exclusive support of the coalition and that of Malacańang while the others will cease to exist.”

So Lakas CMD and Padayon Pilipino of CDO Mayor Emano, both allied to the administration, will cease to exist?

So what will happen to Gov. Oca Moreno and Mayor Emano’s group? Will they turn opposition?

The following are the Mayors who throw their support to Baculio and the rest of the Mayors of the Province.

1.Mayor Orville Abellanosa (Laguindingan)
2. Mayor Alberto Acain (Libertad)
3. Initao Mayor Enerito Acain,
4.Gitagum Mayor Mary Jean Ajonan,
5. El Salvador Mayor Emelita Almirante,
6. Alubijid Mayor Fortunato Hamis,
7. Manticao Mayor Lilith Jabla,
8. Lugait Mayor Wellie Lim,
9. Naawan Mayor Dennis Roa,
10.Opol Mayor Dixon Yasay
11. Jasaan Mayor Redentor Jardin.
12. Balingasag Mayor Felix Borromeo,
13. Salay Mayor Vivencia Capistrano,
14. Balingoan Mayor Perlita Espero,
15. Talisayan Mayor Rommel Maslog,
16. Magsaysay Mayor Santiago Ocot Jr.,
17. Medina Mayor Sulpicio Uyguangco.

REPOST

PIA Press Release

GIS training school now in CdeO
by Rubelyn B. Yap/City Information Office
Date Published: 2007-02-02

In support of the technological need in global competition, the city of Cagayan de Oro has now its Center of Competence in Geomatics Technology at Xavier University.

Estrella Sagaral, city planning and development officer, said that the presence of the geomatics technology in the city is something to be proud of since the city pioneered the Geographic Information System (GIS) among the Local Government Units (LGUs) in the country. Sagaral said that the center’s presence would boosts the city’s technological capability and advancement aside from helping neighboring places to be equipped with the technological know-how about the system. Dr. Robert J. Holmer, coordinator of Geoteach Censophil Project, said that it is very conducive to have an academic institution in Cagayan de Oro that offers GIS training considering the high cost in sending employees (government and private) abroad to undergo such training. With the center, the sustainability of the GIS in government institutions can be easily maintained as the system provides easier access to interested users who, in turn, could train their own pool of trainers, Dr. Holmer concluded.

Outage stalls Oro; council grills Cepalco
By Danilo V. Adorador III

DARKNESS gripped Cagayan de Oro City for several hours Sunday night in a widespread blackout, which officials described as one of the worst in the recent years.

Half of the Velez thoroughfare became an oasis of lights at around 10 p.m., when lights went down in the greater downtown portion, spanning from Carmen and Balulang areas to the eastern neighboring town of Tagoloan, Misamis Oriental.

The blackout closed down 24-hour convenience stores and entertainment businesses in affected areas except for those who have standby power generators at the Divisoria area.

The power outage provided the perfect opportunity for Monday afternoon's grilling of the Cagayan Electric Power and Light Co. (Cepalco) by the City Council.

Sporadic power interruptions occurred late in the afternoon and went on into the early part of the evening, until electricity went out all throughout at around 10 p.m. and lasted until 3 a.m.

Councilor Ian Acenas, a resident of the Agora, Lapasan area, said electricity only came back at their place at around 10 a.m. Monday.

Cepalco was unable to give a prior advisory, as the company said the blackout was caused by weather disturbance.

Strong winds triggered "flashovers and other technical troubles involving Cepalco's 69KV power lines" in barangays Lapasan and Agusan, the company said in an advisory.

Cepalco public relations manager Marilyn Chavez said trouble-shooting took several hours as their technical team struggled to repair the damage amidst unfriendly weather.

She clarified, however, that the strong winds did not topple any of their transmission lines and other facilities.

Councilor Ian Mark Nacaya said Sunday's blackout was the worst in the recent years -- an observation shared by Chavez herself, though she assured they will do everything in their power to avert prolonged blackout.

Cepalco said the power interruptions lasted from two to eight hours, affecting 21 other major areas in the city, including Casinglot area in Tagoloan.

Largest data firm in US to settle in Oro
Sunstar Cebu
November 7, 2006

AMERICA'S largest survey research data collection company, Western Wats, expressed its intention to establish a branch in Cagayan de Oro.

Western Wats Philippines president Chris Mangelson recently met with Mayor Vicente Y. Emano to discuss the details of its planned investment in the city.

Emano gladly welcomed Western Wats' intention as the said information technology (IT) firm will look for an area in the city for their building and will initially employ around 1,500 persons.

The Utah-based firm provides services to more than 200 clients worldwide. These services include Wats Live Interviewing, Wats Online Web Surveys, Wats IVR Surveys (automated voice messaging), and Wats Data Express Online Data Analysis and Custom Real-Time Reporting.

With its most advanced, fully integrated data collection platform on the market, W.I.R.E.', Western Wats operates globally throughout its offices located in the United States, Canada, and the Philippines (Cebu).

The firm's interest in the city is already a big boost to the city's growing reputation as the fastest booming economy in the country.

Emano pointed out that this latest development in the field of investment generation in the city is a positive sign of the continuing trust and confidence placed by the investors in the economic potentials of the city.

Puntod, Tagoloan bridges set for completion

THE regional office of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) said the Puntod-Kauswagan Bridge is being constructed across the Cagayan de Oro River, connecting barangays Puntod and Kauswagan, Cagayan de Oro City.

The scope of work includes the construction of 352-meter long four lanes pre-stressed concrete bridge.

Arroyo Watch: Sun.Star blog on President Arroyo

The access road, including both approaches, will link the city port road in Puntod, with the National Highway in Opol, Misamis Oriental.

The project involves the concreting of 8.465 kilometers, four lanes, concrete road pavement and construction of Reinforced Concrete Deck Girder (RCDG) Bridge over Iponan River at Barangay Iponan.

The bridge structure is already 100 percent completed.

Ongoing works are focused on the construction of road approaches, provision of lighting facilities, painting of the structure, and partial construction of Y-Interchange type road, after the approaches.

Meanwhile, the Tagoloan Parallel Bridge is constructed beside the existing Tagoloan Steel Truss Bridge extended with RCDG Bridge.

It is a two-lane bridge with a length of 529.30 LM and with a 1.266 kms two-lane Portland Cement Concrete Pavement (PCCP) Approaches.

Bulk water supply project assures 24/7 service for Cagayan de Oro

All water concessionaires can now enjoy round the clock water service with the activation of the Cagayan de Oro Water District's Bulk Water Supply Project..

http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g283/boju4289/0492200water_pipes.jpg

The Cagayan de Oro Water District (COWD) can now assure all its concessionaires of 24-hour service in all its service areas after the Rio Verde Water Consortium Inc. (RVWCI) started operations of the country's first-ever bulk water supply project (BWSP) at the start of this year.

COWD is the city's exclusive supplier of industrial, commercial and residential water products and services with 65,000 concessionaires as of year end 2006. Engr. Bienvenido Batar, Jr., COWD assistant general manager for operations, said the BWSP has increased the water supply in Cagayan de Oro by 27%, raising the total volume available daily to 190,000 cu.m.

At present, Batar said RVWCI is providing COWD with 40,000 cu.m. daily under the first phase of the BWSP which COWD is obligated to purchase under a take-or-pay scheme at P10.50 per cu.m, although it has a present capacity of 50,000 cu.m. Batar said the BWSP has been programmed to produce an additional 50, 000.cu.m. by 2010 and another 50,000 cu.m. by 2015, thereby ensuring a stable water supply for COWD for the period 2007-2015.

Since the BWSP started operations, Batar said the bulk water is routed to the western section of the COWD's service area including the barangays of Upper Lumbia, Carmen, Patag, Bulua, and Iponan including residential subdivisions within this area such as Xavier Heights, Xavier Estates, Camella Homes and P.N. Roa Secured Valley Subdivision in Cala-anan.

This allowed COWD to concentrate its existing water sources to the eastern section of its service area, resulting in improved water service to the entire COWD service area. In the western service area, water pressure monitored at its pumping stations rose 25% from 48 p.s.i. to 60 p.s.i. which is now sufficient to supply even elevated areas like Terry Hills and Soldier's Hill in Bgy. Patag, Batar added.

The bulk water supply project is expected to improve the total service connections of COWD from 53% now to 88% of the city's households by 2015. It would also stop the further draining and destruction of Cagayan de Oro City's aquifer by unabated pumping of COWD's deep wells.

RVWCI was awarded a 25-year contract to undertake COWD's BWSP last December 2004. Under the contract, RVWCI would build, operate, and own infrastructure facilities to produce World Health Organization (WHO) - and Philippine-grade potable water via the abstraction and treatment of water from the Bubunawan River in nearby Baungon, Bukidnon.

RVWCI utilizes a state-of-the-art abstraction, filtration and treatment process which can produce up to 200,000 cubic meters of potable bulk water supply daily, which RVWCI Chair Jose Ch. Alvarez claims can be sustained through its integrated surface and underground water harnessed from four other rivers in neighboring towns of Baungon, where its treatment plant is situated.

After extracting and treating raw water, the BWSP delivers the potable water to an off-take point at Barangay Lumbia. Its facilities include an infiltration gallery, intake, transfer pumping stations, water treatment plant, product water transmission pipeline to the designated off take point and electrical substation. The COWD will then draw from the off take point, store it at designated reservoirs and distribute it to concessionaires.

RVWCI has an authorized and subscribed capital stock of P250 million of which P240.18-M has been paid up. It is majority owned by the Rio Verde Water Corp. and US Water LLC of Florida, USA.

Its BWSP is a Board of Investments (BOI) listed project which entitles RVWCI to income tax holiday up to a maximum of six years, duty-free importation of capital equipment, tax deductions of training expenses and the employment of foreign nationals, among others. It was the 10 th biggest project registered with the BOI in 2006 and is ranked 49th among the top 100 projects implemented under the Arroyo administration.

Mr. Alvarez is also president and chairman of the Philippine Phosphate Fertilizer Corp. (Philphos) which built and operates the Leyte Industrial Development Estate Water Supply System in Isabel, Leyte , which can produce up to 750,000 cu.m. of industrial water and 50,000 cu.m. of potable water daily through a 43-kilometer pipeline.

The COWD BWSP was granted a non-pioneer status by the BOI under the 2006 Investment Priorities Plan, although RVWCI earlier applied for a pioneer status citing the provision that infrastructure projects with costs in excess of P1 billion should be classified as pioneer. BOI said it could be upgraded to pioneer status later once the guidelines on the Investments Priorities Plan (IPP) are completed.

Prior to the BWSPs operations, COWD exclusively sourced its water supply from the groundwater sources including 28 production deep wells and a spring, which proved inadequate to meet soaring demand and threatened Cagayan de Oro's aquifer with contamination and saltwater intrusion, and settling of areas above the depleted aquifer, increasing the danger from flooding in low lying areas.

"With the BWSP, COWD's dependence on water from deep wells will be minimized, and hopefully eventually eliminated," Batar said.

The Local Water Utilities Administration has urged private sector investment in bulk water supply projects from rivers or lakes to ensure a sustainable potable water supply for domestic and commercial/industrial concessionaires without degrading existing aquifers.

The Development Bank of the Philippines has supported the LWUA's thrust in this direction, granting RVWCI a P500 million loan to partially finance phase 1 of the bulk water supply project for the COWD.

During a visit to Cagayan de Oro last year, DBP Chair Antonino L. Alindogan, Jr said the bank has approved the release of P4.3 billion for 46 water supply projects all over the country to accelerate its efforts towards the provision of adequate and potable water supply.

"There are many more projects that we are looking at, some are still under negotiation, and we hope to implement these in the very near future. DBP has about P45 billion available which may be tapped for water projects," he said during the signing of the loan agreement with RVCWI.

"From a macro perspective, by serving the remaining untapped households, commercial establishments, and institutions within the service area of COWD, we are also supporting the national government's efforts to alleviate poverty through the provision of adequate and potable water supply," he added.

Small Pinoy Call Centers unite for increased efficiency, marketing and operations

The country's small call center operators have come together in the Philippine Call Center Alliance to improve their individual and collective marketing and operating efficiency.

The country’s small call center operators have banded together to increase their marketing clout and optimize operations in the highly competitive sunrise industry.

“At present we have 35 members but we hope to get more when we consolidate our database of small operators which we’re now securing from the various Regional Information Technology and e-Commerce Committees (RITECC) all over the country,” said Joji Ilagan-Bian, president of the Philippine Call Center Alliance (PhilCall).

Bian said a small call center is defined as one with less than 1,000 seats and may include mom-and-pop operations working out of private residences.

“PhilCall is bringing together small call center operators to improve their service efficiency through better software, hardware and most important, call center employees,” she said.

Although their present membership accounts for only 1,000 of the estimated 3,000-4,000 call center seats in the industry, she expects more to join PhilCall once new members are identified through the lists of registered call center operators submitted by the regional RITECCs.

Besides call center operators, Bian said PhilCall also counts among its members telecommunications, human resources and training companies, suppliers and other companies affiliated with the call center industry.

The primary clients of small call centers in the United States (which remains their main market) are small and medium enterprises which cannot afford the rates of the bigger call centers and only require a limited scope of services, Bian said.

“Most of our clients tap our services for campaigns and accounts which mostly involve telemarketing, selling, and setting appointments,” Bian said. “Thus, most of our calls are outbound, with only about 20% inbound.”

“For this we usually get US$170-300 per sale although I know of some instances when it could go down as low as US$60,” she added.

To be able to serve this niche without shelling out too big an amount up front, Bian said some of PhilCall’s members who were start-ups have used hosted call center services which charge a flat rate of US$125-145 per seat, plus the actual cost of the call.

“While this means you have a higher variable or operating cost per unit of revenue, it also means your initial outlay for the business would not be as much,” Bian explained.

Bian operates a 175 seat call center in Davao City called Six Eleven Global Solutions and is at present PhilCall’s only member outside Metro Manila. She also operates the Davao City-based JIB e-Academy (The Interactive English Language & Call Center School) with branches at Butuan, Iloilo and General Santos and soon to open in Marawi, Gingoog and Valencia.

Small Cagayan de Oro call centers like Arriba Telecontact, Tradetel and Capitol University Call Center have already indicated interest to join PhilCall. Bian was in Cagayan de Oro to attend the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) strategic assessment workshop January 31, 2007 to explore the viability for a Cagayan de Oro Business Council for Information and Communications Technology (ICT).

http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g283/boju4289/6088500ppl_intro320golf.jpg

CANLUBANG will seek its 14th crown when the 60th Philippine Airlines (PAL) Interclub fires off in Cagayan de Oro from Feb. 16-24.

The Sugar Barons bagged their 13th title last year here in Davao City, completing a rare double after winning both the regular Men's and Seniors Division plums at the Apo Golf and Country Club and Rancho Palos Verdes Golf and Country Club.

Canlubang relied on homegrown talents to rule the 59th edition. The likes of Jonel Ababa, Jay Bayron and Mark Zaragoza provided the spark for the Sugar Barons' stellar year.

With long-time skipper Luigi Yulo calling the shots again, Canlubang is expected to draw challenge from Manila Southwoods and Del Monte, both former winners.

The PAL Interclub, the country's oldest tournament involving men and senior golfers, will actually be played in Cagayan de Oro City and Manolo Fortich, Bukidnon.

Teams from all over the country as well as those from the
United States and Canada, are again expected take part in the annual event Pal executives conceptualized in 1947.

The 20th seniors event will be played from February 16 to 18 and the 60th edition of the regular division is set February 21-24 at the Pueblo de Oro Golf in Cagayan and Country Club and Del Monte Golf and Country Club in Manolo Fortich.

The ceremonial tee off for the senior division is set at 8 a.m. February 15 while the ceremonial tee off for the regular division is at 8 a.m. February 20.

The awards night for both divisions will be held at the Atrium, Lim Ket Kai Center in Cagayan de Oro.

Inclement weather sparks flashovers, brownouts all over Cagayan de Oro over weekend

Strong winds and a slight drizzle sparked flashovers all over Cepalco's franchise area over the weekend causing intermittent brownouts.

This premier city of the south experienced spotty electrical service over the weekend as the prevailing weather shorted transformers and transmission lines in the central and western portions of the city.

Marilyn A. Chavez, senior manager for customer and community relations of the Cagayan de Oro Power and Light Co., Inc (Cepalco) said the unscheduled power service interruptions over the weekend affecting various portions of its service area were caused by weather disturbances.

"The strong winds experienced Friday and Saturday caused power lines in various locations to swing, touch each other then snap," Chavez said.

The power interruptions, lasting from one to two hours, affected the following areas: Portions of Camaman-an, Recto Avenue, Osmena Extension, A. Luna, Capistrano St, portions of the Provincial Capitol area, Kauswagan, Bayabas, Patag, Bulua, Iponan and Lapasan all the way to Bugo and portions of Natumulan down to Casinglot, Tagoloan.

However, the extended brownouts late Sunday evening were caused by "flashovers" or shorted lines and transformers caused by a confluence of dust and grime accumulated in insulators due to the extended period without rainfall and the slight drizzle.

"This wouldn't have happened if the rains were heavier since the dirt would just have been washed away," explained Engr. Cecilio Sumaoy of Cepalco's engineering department. "However, since the rains were slight, the accumulated grime was rendered partly conductive and shorted out our transformers."

After a brief brownout around 7:45PM caused by a still unexplained power outage at the National Transmission Corporation's (Transco) 100kVa substation at Natumulan, Tagoloan after which power was promptly restored, the lights went out again some 15 minutes later and were not restored until about 2:30AM Monday.

Based on phoned-in complaints from consumers, most of the flashovers were reported in areas served by feeder lines from Cepalco's Tagoloan sub-stations which consequently also affected the Camaman-an substation and its feeder lines No. 1 serving the city proper, No. 2 serving the Nazareth, Macasandig, Taguanao areas and No.3 serving the Patag, Bulua, Iponan, Kauswagan, Bayabas, Bonbon, Puntod and Macabalan.

Although Cepalco conducts periodic preventive maintenance on the transmission transformers and insulators, Sumaoy said this does not include washing with an imported solvent which is too expensive. Nevertheless, he said the insulators used by the utility are designed to shed dust and provide breaks in conduction to prevent short circuits.

Sumaoy also said Cepalco has equipped its 69kV and higher transmission lines with vibration dampers to absorb the energy generated by strong winds and prevent the lines from touching each other and shorting but these have not been installed in lines 200-100 meters long or shorter. In addition, major distribution lines are also tightened once a year although lately the schedules for this have been affected by the urgent need to replace aging or defective wooden poles with concrete or steel ones.

Cepalco was incorporated as a privately owned utility company in 1958 and is the Philippines third largest private power utility. It distributes electricity within its franchise area covering Cagayan de Oro City and the adjacent Misamis Oriental municipalities of Tagoloan, Villanueva and Jasaan, including the 3,000 hectare Phividec Industrial Estate. It currently serves over 90,000 customers with a total demand of over 100MW.

Cepalco is owned by industrial groups with business interests in the greater Cagayan de Oro City area. Its primary shareholders are the Abaya Group (45%), the Carlos Group (19%), the Unchuan Group (13%) and All Asia Capital Group of Companies (11%). The company's legislative franchise is effective until June 2011 and is expected to be renewed thereafter.

i think the absence of convention center is not the problem here.. but the limited number of hotel rooms..i've learned that CDO has only a little more than 1500 hotel rooms.. not enough to host big events perhaps.. We have venues such as Grand Caprice Convention, or Limketkai Atrium w/c can very well handle big events such as ad congress.. What we need is more hotels to be able to finally host Ad Congress..

N. Mindanao importers pay P1.353 billion custom's taxes in '06

THE Bureau of Customs in Northern Mindanao reported a total collection of P1.3 billion in customs duties and taxes from 20 of the region's top importers.

Customs District Collector Roberto Sarmiento said the economic boom year for Filipinos has just started.

"Putting our fiscal house in order makes the Philippines shine in the eyes of our investors, breaks the shackles of the debt cycle and clears the way towards an economic homerun," Sarmiento said.

"With this, President Arroyo has commended our revenue collection team as well as the whole Cabinet down to the agency level for keeping faith with our goals to boost the public coffers, cut spending, and curb graft," he added.

The shrinking of the budget deficit to P62.2 billion, the lowest in eight years and the third year in a row, as well as, the increases in foreign investments and tax revenues are now being translated into social payback in terms of education, health services and infrastructure, among others, he also said.

Topping the list of these importers are Nestle Philippines, Inc., Global Steel International, Inc., Del Monte Phil., Inc., Pillsbury Milling Corp., Holcim/Alsons Phil. Inc., R.I. Chemical Corp., Petronas (PEPI), Pilipinas Shell, Ricor Mills, Steag State Power, Inc., Philippine Softwood Products, J.S. Unitrade Merchandise, Transway Sales, Mabuhay Vinyl Corp., Iligan Cement Corp., Cagayan Corn Products, Mindanao Container Port Corp., Taira Commercial Industries, Fiesta Brands, and Universal Robina Corp.

In an earlier report, Sarmiento said the region's top 20 exports, last year, totaled US287.283 million with Canned Pineapple Products valued at US$89.349 million topping the list, followed by Sintered Ore, US$53.811 million; Kalcol, US$20.027 million; Philippine Crude Coconut Oil, US$23.237 million and Everyday Milk Powder, US$14.461 million.

Farmin, US$14.461 million; Ordinary Portland Cement, US$11.475 million; Philippine Cane Sugar, US$9.905 million; Desiccated Coconut, US$8.708 million and Limestone Cement, US$6.009 million; KD Finished Wood Product, US$6.003 million; Falcata Lumber, US$4.770 million and Coconut Shell Charcoal, US$4.761 million; Fatty alcohol, US$4.569 million; Rubber Boots/Working Shoes, US$4.569 million; Cement Clinker in Bulk, US$ 3.454 million; Philippine Cane Molasses, US$2.860 million; Raw Cane Sugar, US$2.785 million; Silicon Metal, US$2.751 million and Refined Glycerine, US$2.515 million. kaya nga...Walang kwenta yang senator natin na yan..walang ginagawa for CDO.. Buti pa si Drilon, napaka supportive sa home province nya...and oh, Koko is on the top ten senatorial candidate, based on Pulse Asia's survey...Arrrggghh!

bai, i've read somewhere that we have something like 1500 hotel rooms.. far cry from Cebu's more than 3000..

btw, Mallberry Suites has 120 rooms, while Hotel Koresco has 90..

Kung matapos na 'yang convention center, "hopefully" mapush ang mga hotel concessionaire dito sa CDO to expand or build another huge hotel. Mind you, Ayala project is only stone throw away with this international convention center, siguradong magtayo ang Ayala ng hotel dito....
