day 2 (AM): shooting rapids and lechong baka.
Day 2 for me was the highlight of the whole trip. Cagayan de Oro is all about shooting rapids, so if you've been there and never tried it, you SHOULD definitely go back!
Jego, our principal, told us that we should be ready by 5:30AM. We were all too excited to complain, so we were up and about just in time.

In uniform.
We hired KAGAY, CDO's premier whitewater rafting outfitter to take charge of the whole adventure. And because most of us were gutsy enough, we chose their Advance Course (even if most of us were first-timers), which covers 24 rapids in 4-5 hours. As an add-on, we paid additional Php300 for photos on top of their Php1,000 per head rate. The package includes jeepney transfer from hotel to "put in" (starting point), as well as headgear, life vests, and dry bags for storage.

The gang and the signed waivers.
The waiver simply says: "if something bad happens, don't sue us". Haha!
By 7AM (I think) we were ready to roll.

The orientation.
Listen or you die! Hahaha!
Key points:
#1 Listen to your guide's instructions. If he says paddle forward, do so. Follow his count, too.
#2 In case you fall off the boat, do not panic. Just let your body float (head first) and wait for your knight-in-a-wetsuit a.k.a Kagay boy to save you.
#3 In case you fall off again, no need to swim against the rapids, just hold on to the rope that they will throw at you so they can pull you back.
#4 Swimming skills are not necessary. You're wearing a life vest the entire time anyway.
#5 Have fun and enjoy the ride!
We were divided into three groups, plus a couple from Unilab(?) who joined our team. May bago na namang kadaldalan si Mitor. Haha!
And now, presenting...*drumroll please*
ACTION SHOTS!
Welcome to SPLASH ISLAND!

Each rapid we conquered has a name and story behind it, as blessed and told by the Kagay boys. I can't remember most of it, though. The one that really stuck was Dan drop (a team mate named Dan fell on that part of the river) pero natawa ako kasi naisip ko ay Dan drop = Dandruff. NYE! Corny na kung corny!
We weren't paddling the whole time, by the way. There were parts of the course where we swam in still waters, climbed a huge rock, and was forced to jump!

Lechong baka.
My verdict: 5 out of 5 stars!
We had a glorious time, as in super! There's actually a lot of rafting photos that I'd love to share but it's just too many so my advice is, just try out the adventure and see for yourself!

Philippines’ top emerging business destinations named
By Michael Kho Lim, Contributor
08/08/2010
People who are fond of going to the more popular destinations of the Philippines like Boracay, Puerto Galera, Cebu, Davao among others are encouraged to travel to the equally beautiful but not much visited places in the country.
The Department of Tourism (DoT) and the Philippine Tour Operations Association (PHILTOA) recently announced their list of and awarded several cities across the country the distinction of being the “top emerging business destinations” of the year. To be considered under the list, the destination must meet all the criteria of having good accessibility, communication network, availability of meeting facilities and standard accommodation.
“These emerging destinations are perfect for corporate travelers and holidaymakers,” says PHILTOA president Cesar Cruz. “Each place has something unique to offer, and we’re hoping that more and more people understand the fact that the Philippines has what it takes to be one of the world’s premier travel destinations.”
Luzon
In the Ilocos region (Region I), the cities of Laoag and Dagupan are recognized for their heritage sites and beaches. Laoag is home to one of the biggest cathedrals in the country, St. Williams’ Cathedral, where the Sinking Bell Tower can be seen. On the other hand, Dagupan or the “land of the milkfish (bangus)” is also known for its historical landmarks and pristine beaches.
In the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR), the La Trinidad Valley in Benguet is famous for its vegetable terraces that it earned the name “Salad bowl of the Philippines,” and later because of its magnificent strawberry fields gave it the title of “Strawberry fields of the Philippines.”
In the Cagayan Valley Region (Region II), Palaui Island of Sta. Ana, Cagayan is worth visiting for its rich ecosystem of bodies of water and diverse group of plants and animals. It was declared as a marine reserve in 1994 and perfect for people who love outdoor adventures such as snorkeling, diving, fishing, hiking, and camping.
In the Central Luzon region (Region III), Baler and Zambales are included in the list. Baler boasts of a rich history lying beneath the walls of the Baler Catholic Church, and is perfect for surfing because of Baler Bay’s nine-foot waves. On the other hand, Zambales is proud of its white sand beaches such as the Anawangin cove, and diving spots where 35 World War II Japanese ships can be found. One can also go on a mango tour and pick some of the sweetest mangoes available. The Guinnes Book of World Record awarded Zambales in 1995 for producing the sweetest mangoes in the world.
In the National Capital Region, Taguig City joins the list of the emerging destinations for its various choices of food, shopping and entertainment at the Serendra, Bonifacio High Street and Market! Market!
In the Calabarzon region (Region IV-A), the city of San Juan in Batangas is acknowledged for its numerous white sand beaches and diving spots. Meanwhile, Marinduque in the Mimaropa region (Region IV-B) is awarded for keeping its cultural traditions and world-class resort. It is known for the Moriones festival where locals march around the town in costumes and masks re-enacting the Roman soldiers during Biblical times. Marinduque is also home to the famous Bellarocca Island Resort and Spa.
In the Bicol region (Region V), the cities of Sorsogon and Naga complete the list for Luzon. Known as the “Switzerland of the East” because of its rolling hills and valleys, Sorsogon is also famous for its firefly tour and whale shark (butanding) interaction in the town of Donsol. On the other hand, Naga City in Camarines Sur is well-known for its historical churches and passion plays in the town of Buhi. Meanwhile, the CamSur Watersports Complex is praised for its world-class sports facilities.
Visayas
In the Western Visayas region (Region VI), Silay City is recognized for its preserved ancestral houses and for being the center for culture in the Visayas. It is the birthplace of National Artist Leandro Locsin and Hiligaynon playwright Miguela Locsin Montelibano, and home to the San Diego Pro-Cathedral.
In the Central Visayas region (Region VII), Dumaguete City is best identified with the region’s best universities such as Silliman University, nearby islands of Sumilon and Apo, and several white sand beaches and dive sites.
In the Eastern Visayas region (Region VIII), the city of Catarman in Northern Samar provides serenity to the traveler stressed out from the life in the metro. One can visit different lighthouses and churches, go hiking, island hopping, and whale and bird watching.
Mindanao
In the Zamboanga Peninsula region (Region IX), the city of Dapitan boasts of historical treasures of Dr. Jose Rizal and landmarks such as Talisay, Dapitan Bay, and the white sand beaches of Aliguay and Selinog Islands.
In the northern Mindanao region (Region X), Cagayan de Oro City is home to the Gardens of Malasag Eco-Tourism Village, Museum of Three Cultures, Monigue Cave, and Macahambus Adventure Park, where travelers can enjoy a lot of outdoor activities such as whitewater rafting, kayaking, rappelling and ziplining. Cagayan de Oro is also known as the “City of Golden Friendship” because of its very amiable people.
In the Davao region (Region XI), the Island Garden City of Samal offers paradise-like coves and beaches, not to mention great diving spots in Talikud and Ligid islands, the 224-hectare mariculture park, the bat sanctuary, and the Sanipaan Shoal.
In the Socsargen region (Region XII), the city of Sarangani presents a quiet paradise of fine white sand beaches such as the Sarangani Bay, various mystical caves, raging waterfalls and flourishing rainforests.
In the Caraga region (Region XIII), Butuan City is considered as the historical Mecca of the Philippines and home to several festivals such as the Abayan Festival, the Kahimunan Festival and the Adlaw Hong Festival. The city also boasts of the Butuan Regional Museuem, Agusan River (the deepest river that runs through the city), Cubi Cubi Beach, Tinago Beach, Mount Mayapay, and provides good access to the surfing capital of Siargao.
Lastly, in the Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao (ARMM), one can enjoy the thriving ecosystem of the coastal province of Tawi-Tawi such as natural zoos and paradise-like beaches.
Biyahe Exchange Program
All of the top emerging business destinations will be featured at the 21st Philippine Travel Mart that is slated to run from Sept. 3 to 5 at the SM Megatrade Halls.
This joint project of DoT and PHILTOA is part of the Biyahe Exchange Program, a one-on-one business matching program between corporate buyers and travel sellers where corporate incentive tours and meeting packages will be offered. There will also be special packages sold at “beyond the usual” discounted tour packages and will only be available during the 21st Philippine Travel Mart.

Class August 9th, 2010, 10:11 AM How Not to Promote CdeO
Monday, August 9, 2010
THE countdown is on leading to August 28, St. Augustine's Day. It's fiesta time in the city. Time for fun and games, beauty contests and fun-runs, says Promote CdeO Foundation gamely.
But for many, it's more like: Time to distract people from their misery, from frustration and aggravation, or more pointedly, Time to sweep the dirt under the rug. Poor planning aggravated by poor implementation are making our streets unsafe and anti-people.
Traffic is a mess. No relief in sight. Streets and sidewalks are clogged, squatting prevails. Even our precious parks aren't spared, just look at the ghastly sight of 'ukay-ukay' tents right in the middle of the Divisoria.
Much garbage is uncollected. Crime is on the rise, drugs on sale. All the people see are the usual cops-and-robber games. All they hear are the usual sounds of bravado from City Hall; but no coherent program of government.
Look at the environment. Waterways and coastal areas are health hazards. Recurrent floods seem taken for granted. Drainage canals are clogged; green with contamination and filth. The seven rivers are treated like sewers. Who at City Hall and the barangay halls give a bother? If epidemics strike, it's panic management time.
Promote CdeO aims to attract visitors and tourists. Does anyone check public comfort rooms? Apart from the ones in malls and star-rated hotels, eateries and markets defy civilized standards of sanitation, hygiene, and maintenance.
Who checks kitchens and shabby cooks and food handlers? Is no one disgusted, no one compelled to act on reckless endangerment to public health? How does one reconcile this unconcern with the idea of a First Class City?
A city's appearance and behavior reflects the standard, efficiency, and sense of duty of its leaders and citizens. But it's the leaders who set the standard.
They should know that no gimmick or extravaganza can mask ugly reality. All Promote CdeO Foundation can do is a cosmetic job, like putting a layer of makeup on a scabrous, unwashed face.
What the mayor needs to do is activate the City Development Council as provided by law and have it perform its function of comprehensive planning and overseeing the plan, while pushing the other departments, especially the City Health Office, to do their job.

Sad but true...all Emano has done recently is to personally sign those docs brought by casual city gov't staff to renew their contract....
Doh! dept heads can do that...unless he doesn't trust the dept heads....then replace the dept heads...
The way Emano is acting is like he is running small business...for goodness sake he is running the City of CDO....

That casual worker re-signing job is for the dept heads not for the city leader...

Flooding in Cagayan de Oro

Waiting to happen
CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY – Happy new year can hardly be said of the tens of thousands of people who would have started their Saturday morning January 3, 2009 trying to squeeze some more holiday time and guzzle up on some energy for the work waiting on the 5th of January.
I was in Bukidnon for the New Year Holidays when breaking news came on national TV about the flashfloods in Cagayan de Oro City due to the overflow of the Cagayan de Oro River.
The news indicate more than 5,000 households were displaced, alongside video footages of debris and two persons being carried away by the rampaging waters near the Ysalina Bridge, by the City Hall, with people helplessly watching by.
Yes this is the Cagayan de Oro River that has put the City of Golden Friendship in the country’s eco-tourism map.
Way back then, in the aftermath of the Ormoc Tragedy, environmentalists have been warning that because of the insane logging and land use conversation in the Cagayan de Oro and Lanao Watershed, catastrophic floods may hit the city, as the absorptive capacity of the Cagayan de Oro Watershed is reduced due to forest denudation and soil run-off from these denuded landscape make its way to the riverbeds, reducing the carrying capacity of the river.
One peculiar characteristic of the Cagayan de Oro River is that it snakes through at the heart of the City of Golden Friendship, from the hinterland barangays of Besigan, Tignapoloan, Dansolihon, Mambuaya, Bayanga, Lumbia, Indahag,to sub-urban and urban baraganys of Balulang, Macasandig, the Burgos St barangays, Carmen, Consolacion, Kauswagan, Puntod, Macabalan and Bonbon. This spans about 90 kilometers.
Downstream, on the eastern riverbank downstream of the Cagayan de Oro River is the poblacion (barangays 1-40) and populated suburbs like Macasandig, Nazareth, Consolacion, Puntod and Macabalan, on the otherside, Balulang, Carmen, Kauswagan and Bonbon.
This explains pretty much the havoc that Auring-induced rains brought to the city.
Cagayan de Oro River has more than a dozen tributaries, among the more important once are the Batang River some 2,500 meters in the Kalatungan Range in Lanao del Sur and flows to the Bulanog River in the Lanao-Talakag boundaries then going down to the jurisdiction of Cagayan de Oro City. Along the way, several tributaries from the Mt. Kitanglad Range, like the Tumalaong and Bubunawan Rivers, and the Monigue Creek from the mountains of Dansolihon, Mambuaya and Bayanga join the river. (Monigue Creek joins the river in the Macahambus Gorge and Cave Area)
I did some investigation on how the water accumulated so huge and so fast that fateful January 3 of 2009. I was told that steady rainfall in the uplands from news years day, up in the Talakag (southern side), and Besigan and Tignapoloan (northern side) areas had resulted in the build-up of the river elevation. Water had been unusually elevated in the Uguaban Bridge in the Dansolihon area.
Witnesses downstream also reveal that buhawi (cloud burst/ water spout) in the Baungon area, where the Tumalaong and Bubunawan Tributaries come from was observed early morning of January 3.
In fact, there were fears that the wooden bridge in the Tamalaong River in Lingating, Baungon would be carried by the rampaging waters as the water level almost overflowed the bridge. The water elevation in the Maasin Bridge that connects Brgy. Nicdao in Baungon to Bayanga, where the famous “pinoy” whitewater rafting starts and the “western” whitewater ends was also extremely high.
Just a few meters from the Maasin Bridge, joins another tributary, the Bubunawan River which was also draining enormous volume of water that fateful January 3.
The confluence of the high volume of water from the Kalatungan and Kitanglad Range explains the disaster, first stop the low lying areas of brgys Indahag, Balulang, Macasandig and Carmen. Macasandig, specifically Sitio Cala-cala seems to be the worst hit area. Then so on and so forth.
State of Calamity have been declared in 16 Oro Barangays, about 6,000 families displaced consisting of more than 22,000 poor individuals are now in evacuation centers.
In Baungon, Bukidnon, several barangays have been declared by the LGU as calamity areas, like Lingating, Danatag, Langaon, Nicdao. The hanging bridge in Langaon that used by school children to cross to brgy. Bayanga to go to school have been wiped out by the flood. The damage to agricultural crops have yet to be determined.
As they say, all is water under the bridge now. And there is little we can do when nature unleashes its fury.
I disagree, something ought to be done and something must be done to at least mitigate future disasters.
More than eight years after the last anti-logging barricade by our group, the Task Force Macajalar folded in the Manresa/ SM area, nobody seemed to remember the warnings and the call for a stop to logging and the implementation of a no non-sense reforestation measures in the watershed of Cagayan de Oro.
There were small efforts to reforest our watershed. Our group started a small indigenous forest species (dipterocarp) reforestation project in the Dansolihon, Bayanga areas, in the Monigue Creek, but when external funds went dry, it wasn’t anymore replicated. Many other small initiatives were done, but none big and sustainable enough was pursued. These big and sustainable project, naturally should have been done by the government, both the local and national government. But instead, our officials looked the other way, enjoyed the bright city lights and ignored the elephant in our backyard so to speak. Then came January 3, 2009.
Fortunately enough, Mother Nature did not spank us in the dark of the night, had it been otherwise, the loss of lives could be hard to even to imagine.
The cause of the disaster that visited us is not a result of short-term causes but a result of 20 – 30 years of abuse and neglect to our forest ecosystem, the watershed of Cagayan de Oro. It was a result of unabated legal and illegal logging and mindless land use conversion.
Now that the lightning had struck and have seen our elected officials quick to blame correctly illegal logging and mindless land use conversion (HELLLOOOOO!???), after making the sign of the cross, I am proposing four things:
1) Improve our disaster preparedness so that people will not helplessly get flushed from their homes to the Macajalar Bay when flashfloods come. Global Warming may bring more bad rains;
2) Conduct a comprehensive watershed physical characterization of the Cagayan de Oro River and its tributaries. We do have competent people and facilities to do this using GIS technology in generating natural hazard maps, watershed drainage maps, so on and forth of the Cagayan de Oro River and its tributaries;
3) Develop a warning mechanism so that people downstream the river are alerted whenever there are abnormal build-up of water upstream the river and its tributaries;
4) Implement a comprehensive reforestation and river rehabilitation program in the Cagayan de Oro River. Definitely, not the one they are doing now, which is mostly aesthetic in nature focusing only in the downstream. Those things they are doing in, what is that, CORDA??? will just be flushed to Macajalar Bay if nothing is done upstream. Inputs on how to go about this may come from number 2.
Till, then, let us help each other in alleviating the plight of the victims of the flood. Politicians, enjoy your time in the limelight helping the victims, but please do something sensible this time.
Kudos to all those kindhearted people who helped in the relief operations. To contribute its five-cent worth, the Cooperative Sector in the city have launched its relief drive too. The first batch of its aid was turned over to ABS-CBN’s Sagip Kapamilya Jan. 9, 2009. This is spearheaded by the City Cooperative Development Council headed by Dr. Anselmo Mercado, the Regional Cooperative Development Council of Atty. Isidro Q. Lico and the Cooperative Development Authority 10 headed by Dir. Orlando R. Ravanera.

Cagayan de Oro has been cited lately as among the perfect destinations where travelers can mix business with pleasure, relaxation and adventure. Specifically, Region 10′s economic center was chosen not only as gateway to northern part of Mindanao but also due to its city-based adventure activities.
The city’s whitewater rafting adventures, and other outdoor activities are just a few mnutes from the city proper. Basically it’s where business and pleasure mix.
“These places are perfect for corporate travelers and holidaymakers,” says Cesar Cruz, Philippine Tourism Authority president. “Each place has something unique to offer, and we’re hoping that more and more people understand the fact that the Philippines has what it takes to be one of the world’s premier travel destinations.”
Aside from Cagayan de Oro, also named emerging destinations are: Laoag and Dagupan (Region I), for their heritage sites, and beaches; La Trinidad Valley Cordillera Administration Region (CAR), for its magnificent strawberry fields, vegetable terraces and cut flower industry; Zambales (Region III), a multifaceted destination for beach holidays, mango agri-tourism and sports adventure activities; San Juan, Batangas (Region IV-A) can easily boast endless beautiful beaches and stylized type of resorts; Marinduque (Region IV-B) with its world class resort and rich cultural traditions; Sorsogon of Bicol (Region V) which is synonymous to eco-tourism activities like whale interaction and firefly tour.

Down south: The Island Garden City of Samal (Region XI), for its paradise-like coves and beaches, eco-adventure sites and activities; Butuan City (Region XIII) of Caraga is historical mecca of the Philippines with good access to Agusan marshlands and surfing capital of Siargao; Sarangani (Region XII) can always pull a surprise with its beautiful coastlines, diverse cultural heritage and aqua tourism activities; Dapitan City (Region IX) of Zamboanga del Sur, holds one of the historical treasures of Dr. Jose Rizal, complemented by its rustic surroundings and thriving aqua culture industry.
The criteria used by the Department of Tourism and PHILTOA for choosing the Top Emerging Business Destinations are: good accessibility, communication network , availability of meeting facilities and standard accommodations.
The destinations will be featured at the 21st Philippine Travel Mart on September 3 to 5 at the SM Megatrade Halls, as part of the Biyahe Exchange Program, a one-on-one business meeting between corporate buyers and travel sellers where travel adventures, trips, and tours are offered to companies for corporate outings and company incentives.
bisayadako August 17th, 2010, 06:38 AM Finally!..someone got an excellent idea about the Northern Mindanao and South-central Visayas area. And I think ONLY Paras Supercat is servicing this area (Bohol, Camiguin, CDO vice versa)....and their 12-day cost is peanuts to overseas tourist...I'd like to see local travel company to create similar itinerary like this...

12 DAY VISAYAN ADVENTURE
The Philippines is famous for its amazing islands and for having the happiest people in the world. It is less well known for its adrenaline inducing Adventure Tourism. It has a lot to offer and in our exhilarating 12 day tour we cover the best of the best in a way that won’t leave you exhausted but instead revived, energised and on a natural high.
Day One: After personal introductions and trip briefing we head from our seaside accommodation on Mactan Island to the mountains of Cebu to get some quality training in ropes and rappelling/abseiling. We will use these skills many times throughout the trip so want you to be competent and comfortable.

Philippines map
Day Two
This is a water day! We spend the day island hopping on a traditional banca to a nearby island before getting some skills in kayaking to allow easy exploration of other nearby islands and a great bird sanctuary. Snorkeling is also quite good here.
Day Three and Four: Catch an early ferry to Bohol and continue on to adventure capital, Danao. The Suislide, Plunge, and Abseiling are the more adrenaline-based activities and the River climbing, Kayaking, and Root Climbing are great too. Caving is also an excellent option at night for the brave and young at heart!
The next day is more laid back and will give you a chance to do any of the activities missed out on such as the Organic Farm tour or the Village tour. An early morning Historical trek is also on offer and is a great way to start the day.
Day Five: Travel to the centre of the Chocolate Hills and then jump on a Mountain Bike to really experience the beauty of the area and get the blood pumping. We ride mostly downhill through some spectacular jungle, villages and rice paddies. We have a late lunch at an invigorating waterfall before proceeding to Nuts Huts for a few nights.
Day Six: Today is a rest day. Nuts Huts is on the Loboc river so there is swimming, trekking, caving or just plain relaxing. There is an excellent sauna/massage combo that they do here that we recommend you do. Please note all activities on this day are at your own expense. Frankly I love to just get a massage and eat and sleep on this day. The food there is outstanding!
Day Seven: An early morning trip to the Tarsier sanctuary will be made before we head to a ferry to go to Camiguin the island of fire! There are more volcanoes here per sqare kilometre than anywhere else in the world. Hot springs are the go for when we arrive in the late afternoon.
http://www.awareadventures.com.au/images/camiguinpanarama.jpg
Camiguin Island Panarama
Day Eight: We will either climb the majestic Hibok Hibok Volcano at 1,320 meters above sea level, or go trekking, canyoning, rappelling, and climbing. The activity we choose to do will depend on a range of factors. Camiguin truly is an amazing place. I asked my wife to marry me there on that little white island you can see above.
Day Nine: Rest day! If you like you can visit the white island I proposed to Melissa on or maybe hire a motorbike and zoom around the island (its not that big). We know heaps of things to do or maybe just get a massage and relax on the black sand beach. Any activities today are at own expense.
Day Ten: We leave Camiguin to head to Cagayan De Oro. On the way we visit another adventure park with "Asia's Longest Zip-line" before arriving at 'The Ranch'. If you're up for more zip-lining or rappelling you can do that here or you can settle in for a very pleasant few nights at this fantastic, secluded nature park.
Day Eleven: Canyoneering is today’s challenge! An action packed river trek with slides, jumps, climbs, swimming and rappelling. This activity is outstanding! After all the action we have a well earned barbecue lunch before discovering some more amazing waterfalls and secluded places in this huge nature park. You will feel truly blessed to be allowed a glimpse into this environment.
Day Twelve: We saved the best till last! Today we get to feel the rush of White Water Rafting . In the morning we do a 3 hr run with 14 rapids and then after lunch we tackle the heart pumping advanced rapids. This day is a true highlight of the trip and will leave you on a huge natural high.
Tonight we catch an overnight ferry back to Cebu which arrives at 5am and that is when the tour concludes.
Day Thirteen:
We arrive at the ferry terminal at around 5am in the morning and that is the end of our trip. Then of course we will help you to the airport or elsewhere.
Paalam until our next big adventure!

How Not to Promote CdeO
What the mayor needs to do is activate the City Development Council as provided by law and have it perform its function of comprehensive planning and overseeing the plan, while pushing the other departments, especially the City Health Office, to do their job.

hadlok na si Emano nga dili na siya makabalik for 2nd term kay ang vote difference was less than 3000. Klarex Uy was NOT a good candidate pero hapit pelde si Emano...:)
I think Emano should put it in his mind that people of CDO are not as naive as before... putting back disorganized markets like that and personally signing contract renewal sa mga casual sa City Hall is NOT gonna put him back for the 2nd Term....unless ang opponent is like Karex Uy again. :)

Ayala Land’s first subdivision development in Mindanao is slowly completing its major facilities. The Alegria Hills Clubhouse is almost finished. As shown above, the admin building, social hall, function rooms, the main clubhouse and perimeter landscaping are all in the final stages of construction. I think at the end of this week, the facility may be ready for inauguration. [photo from Cebu Realty]
Also, Blocks 1, 5 and 8 of Phase 1 are all sold out. Only 2 lots are left available for Block 9. More lots are available for Blocks 2, 3 and 6. The clubhouse is shown south of the residential lots but on higher ground.

Dreamer's August 20th, 2010, 11:02 PM Oro, HUDCC tie up for housing project
CAGAYAN de Oro City Government is tying up with the committee on Housing and Urban Development Coordination Council (HUDCC) headed by Vice President Jejomar Binay to develop an affordable and decent socialized housing project in the city.
The housing project would reportedly have a monthly amortization of only P340.
Updates on President Benigno Aquino III's presidency
Councilor Alexander Dacer, chair of the City Council committee on urban poor, said Cagayan de Oro City is very fortunate to be chosen as the first beneficiary of Binay's project.
"Vice President Binay personally called Mayor Vicente Emano of the good news as he will allocate millions of pesos to fund his first low-cost housing project in the city," Dacer said.
As counterpart, the city will buy a 50-hectare vacant lot somewhere in Barangay Calaanan, Indahag or Balubal.
Dacer said the beneficiaries of the housing project are those living in crowded shanties, alleys and sidewalks, creeks and rivers banks, and even those who live near the sea.
He said in every unit, they will allocate about 50 to 70 square meters for a typical housing unit equipped with complete drainage system and basic amenities.
"We will identify the number of beneficiaries the soonest as ordered by Mayor Emano, so he will fly to Manila and personally present to Vice President Binay the polished socialized housing project," Dacer said.
He emphasized that a proper screening will follow to identify those beneficiaries who deserve to benefit the housing project. (Nicole J. Managbanag)

i consider CDO my second home. but the traffic and other things that give the city a chaotic character is indeed a concern.
it's the impression one gets when leaving CENTRO restaurant, for example (after last night's dinner there). good, relaxed ambiance inside but the street outside is just the opposite - murag naghalo-galo ang tanan.
but otherwise everything in CDO is very good- friendly people, many good restaurants, fresh seafood, good schools like XU, amenities of city life but also a felt, welcome presence of things provincial, very affordable living standard.
and yes, many taxi drivers who still give you even a P5-change!
oro plata mata August 21st, 2010, 05:19 AM i think its moreno - emano for mayor in 2013. it will be a tough one for dongkoy. kudos to moreno . lara park is one that we could be proud of. dv soria and traffic represent the stinking administration of pokwang.
oro plata mata August 21st, 2010, 05:34 AM most of the drivers here in cdo are barbarians, to follow the traffic rules is the last thing they would do while on wheels. unfortunately for us, the politically employed traffic men are mere scarecrows standing in the street corners.

Linguine August 22nd, 2010, 05:16 PM Condotel construction seen to lure investors to CDO
Written by Bong D. Fabe / Correspondent
Sunday, 22 August 2010 10:16
CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY—A newly-established real-estate company here has embarked on a scheme to lure investors to the city.
Through a “condotel,” prospective investors not only can own a “unit,” but can also earn at the same time, said Erwin L. Pepino, corporate secretary and vice-president for public relations of Plumbline Development Corp., which was established by a consortium of Hawaiian-Filipino business people.
Pepino said the condotel is a new business concept in the city. It allows for the combination of a condominium with a hotel lifestyle while affording the luxury of a full-service hotel with a concept of ownership of commercial condominium units.
Plumbline is now nearing the construction of the first-ever condotel here, named Uptown Condotel, a 3-story, 48-unit residential building at the Xavier Estates in Upper Balulang.
Pepino said the building will open in December and that “by January next year, we’ll start turning over the units to the buyers.”
Each buyer/investor can earn in three ways from the condotel concept, he said. First, by buying a unit during the pre-construction phase, the buyer can have the potential of earning exponential income due to price appreciation. Second, by having their unit rented out like regular hotel rooms, the owner can earn up to 15-percent per annum as return of investment. Third, by buying a unit at Uptown Condotel, the buyer is not just investing in a single unit, but is also buying into prime real-estate property since they will then become part owners of common areas within the vicinity of the building.
“We’re bringing in a cutting-edge business concept that would lure investors into the city,” he said.
Each buyer/investor will receive an equal sharing of profits or proceeds of rented units. This means the owners of un-rented units shall get the same amount with those whose units were rented out.
“Our aim is not just to provide a hotel-like home atmosphere to our investors, local and foreign, but also give them prime investment opportunities in Cagayan de Oro’s real-estate market,” he stressed.
Uptown Condotel is Plumbline’s first property development project, which is why the company is determined to make it the finest in the region.
Each unit has a floor area of 45 square meters, (sq.m) bigger than a suite in a hotel. Each buyer/investor will not need to apply for their own landline phone since the condotel has a 24-hour operator-assisted telephone service. It also has cable television and free Internet connectivity; and a 24-hour housekeeping (room service) on demand. It also provides a 15-sq.m. exclusive parking for each unit.
All units will have kitchen facilities and will have bathtubs for each unit’s toilet and bath.

If you’re a native Cagayanon, you have probably heard of the “giant fish” tale along the Cagayan de Oro River. Some say it’s just a myth, a legend, a tale from the old age carried over the years. Based on the story, the giant fish even ate a priest from nearby St. Augustine Church.
But maybe only few locals know of an old tablet carved from stone depicting that “incident involving the priest and the giant fish”. Many years before, this tablet was located somewhere on the southwest concrete fence of what is now St. Joseph’s Garden of St. Augustine Church. Interestingly, this tablet (shown above) was transferred right at the back of the Archbishop’s Palace, away from the public view. A closer view of the tablet shown below clearly shows the hapless American priest being caught by the giant fish….Now, is this still a myth? The tablet is believed to be very old. Who would have made this and why would someone carve this “incident”?

In modern times, there really exists a giant carp as shown below and is very common in Southeast Asia.
http://megafishes.org/wp-content/uploads/2009/05/2-giant-carp-catlocarpio-siamensis.jpg
Still, this giant carp could be very much bigger in the older days which can easily gobble up anything the size of a man.
Now, this giant fish is often depicted in the floats during the annual fiesta.

Redevelopment of Gov. Vicente de Lara Park (formerly MacArthur Park or simply Capitol Park) is nearing completion. Only a small portion on the north side facing Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas is left for further work.
This area here shown below is the only remaining section of the park which is still undergoing redevelopment. Construction materials are still onsite and work continues.

Other areas have been completed with walkable tiled pathways and beatifully landscaped gardens and benches….truly a park within a city.

interesting myth. in my recent CDO visit someone was telling me about this gigantic fish. kaluoy na padi!
nice to see that the city fiesta now features more activities. when i was in cdo in 2002-2004 the celebration was quite dry. life practically went on as usually and there was really nothing festive in the air.
the introduction of these floats surely has drawn the crowds.
adv happy fiesta sa tanan!

I first saw that "Priest taken by a Giant fish" tablet when I was a kid in the early 70's. There use to be a manicured lawn at the back of the church and we go there after the mass..and check out that tablet.

Wednesday, 25 August 2010 20:16 Written by By JIGGER JERUSALEM Correspondent THE hostage crisis that ended bloody last Monday did not affect the influx of tourists here, the tourism department said yesterday.
According to Department of Tourism regional director for Northern Mindanao Catalino Chan III, his office has not received information that hotel reservations were cancelled.
Chan said the DOT is expecting more local and foreign tourist arrivals in time for the city fiesta this weekend.
"Our accredited hotels are still fully booked," Chan said.:cheers:
He said 75 to 80 percent of arrivals are domestic tourists while the rest are from the US, Australia, among others.
"We only expect a few visitors from Hong Kong to the city, so the ‘black' travel advisory issued by the Hong Kong government will only have a slight effect on local tourism," Chan told The Gold Star Daily yesterday.
In spite of that, Chan said he is hopeful that Hong Kong would lift the travel ban as it could have an effect on other tourists who are on their way to the country.
He said tourists who are staying now in Hong Kong may have second thoughts of coming to the country once they hear of the travel ban.
Chan said that hostage crisis situations happen around the world "but what happened in Manila city was an overkill".
Chan said he is glad Venus Raj, the country's representative to the recently held Ms. Universe pageant, was awarded the 4th runner-up. He said it somehow helped lighten the negative impression on the Philippines.

4th GOLDEN FLOAT PARADE COMPETITION 2010
The Golden Float Parade Competition features different float entries from participating Companies, Government, Non-Government and Private Organizations, Schools, and Agencies. This will be held in the morning of August 28, 2010 along the city’s main streets. On its 4th year, the competition is being co-organized by the United Architects of the Philippines-CDO Gold Chapter. Each float depicts a themed design or drama recounting Cagayan de Oro’s growth and development, history, people or cultural or event. Cash prizes at stake are: 1st prize – P150,000; 2nd Prize – P100,000; 3rd Prize – 50,000.
HALAD SA LAMBAGOHAN
Is a significant event as it highlights the role of Cagayan de Oro River in the community. This will be held on August 28, 2010 which will be highlighted with two corollary events: the floating of lighted lanterns and a competition of stationary lanterns/flotillas which will be anchored along the banks of the Golden Mile fronting the City Hall. These activities aim to manifest our gratitude to the Almighty and our patron saint, St. Augustine for the life-giving river from which the dynamism of the City has evolved. It also intends to bring to the consciousness of the people of the City the importance of preserving the ecology of the river for future generations to enjoy. The anchored lanterns/flotilla competition will have two categories: the Corporate category and the Community based/Barangay category. Entries will be judged according to design and aesthetics. Winners of this competition will receive cash prizes, trophies, and certificates of participation. Cash prizes are: P20,000.00 for the Grand Prize; 15,000.00 for the 1st Runner Up; and 10,000.00 for the 2nd Runner Up. The event is co-organized by the Safer River Life Saver Foundation with the participation of Oro Association of Rafters (OARs), the Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) Federation, St. Augustine Parish and Association of Barangay Councils (ABC).

Colorful float parade (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/cagayan-de-oro/colorful-float-parade)
THE 4th Kagay-an Golden Float Parade Competition held Saturday drew thousands of spectators who braved the scorching heat of the sun just to witness this year's different floats.
At least nine floats from participating companies, LBC, Paras SeaCat, Jessie Mendez Salon, International Pharma Inc., Limketkai Mall, Pueblo de Oro Development Corp., Psalmtre Enterprises, Concentrix Corporation and Ororama, competed for the grandest honor as they traveled from the Rodelsa Circle in Macasandig towards Limketkai Center in Lapasan.
Each float was made unique depicting themes recounting Cagayan de Oro's growth and development, history, culture and its people.
Acting as judges in the competition were the officers and members of the United Architect of the Philippines (UAP) who were stationed at Kiosko Kagawasan in Divisoria and in Limketkai Center.
Among the nine entries, the float of Concentrix Corporation bagged the grand prize with P150,000 cash followed by International Pharma Inc. as 1st runner up with a corresponding prize of P100,000 and LBC as 2nd runner up with P50,000 cash prize.
The 4th Kagay-an Golden Float Parade Competition was held back-to-back with the annual civic military parade, which was participated by 19 schools and representatives of government and the non- government organizations.
Due to the huge number of participants, the parade took about four hours but some of the spectators said it was worth watching.
The drum and bugle corps of different participating schools were also recognized in the event.
The Most Disciplined drum and bugle corps went to Pilgrim Christian College while Liceo de Cagayan University bagged the Best Marching Band and the Misamis Oriental General Comprehensive High School got the Best in Costume. (Nicole J. Managbanag)

Big hope for Oro's Milendo
Friday, August 27, 2010
LONDON -- Cagayan de Oro pride Milan "Milenyo" Melindo is out to stretch his winning streak on Saturday when he fights Korean Jin Man Jeon at the Waterfront Hotel in Cebu city.
He will be in one of the undercards in the "Philippines vs The World" boxing feature which will pit three other Antonio L. Aldeguer (ALA) stable boxers against three other foreign boxers in Cebu's only hotel boxing venue.
Rey "Boom boom" Bautista will try to resume his successful comeback as he heads the boxing card vs Alejandro Barrera of Mexico. Ala fighters Florante Condes and Jimrex Jaca will also fight with Sofyan Effendi of Indonesia and Pipino Cuevas Jr. of Mexico, respectively.
According to ALA stable president Michael Aldeguer, Saturday's presentation is their biggest promotion since the 2007's `The Moment of Truth' when they brought to Cebu the Gorres vs Montiel clash. This promotion is also supported by the country's top TV network ABS-CBN.
Melindo is a true blue Kagay-anon who grew up in Barangay Puerto. At the age of six, his father brought him a pair of boxing gloves and introduced him to boxing. He made the sport a hobby that earned for him a scholarship to finish high school.
After high school he went to Cebu to become a member of the vaunted ALA stable and started his professional career when he fought and decision Meljun Grumo on Sept. 17, 2005 at the Mandaue City Sports and Cultural Center.
Although lacking in punching power, Melindo complements his style with aggressiveness and relentless combinations. He now totes an unblemished 21-win record with six knockouts.
He has moved up in weight from mini-flyweight to flyweight where he is more comfortable.
I have watched Melindo fight in a rare boxing promotion in Cagayan de Oro city in late October of 2008 against a Tanzanian fighter Juma Fundi. Misamis Oriental Governor Oscar Moreno organized that boxing event at the packed Atrium of the Limkitkai Mall.
Milendo was hardly tested in that fight because of the mediocre opposition however, he officially announced his entry to big time boxing after successfully defending his WBO Asia Pacific mini flyweight by flooring the African in the third round.
From start to finish, Melindo did not allow the Tanzanian any space to execute his offensive combinations. An uppercut in the third round finished off the African whose dodgy checkered haircut was the only offensive thing about him.
Melindo captured his WBO Asia Pacific mini-flyweight title from Panamanian Carlos Melo at the Cebu Coliseum, in July 26, 2008 via unanimous decision.
I was very impressed by Melindo's aggressiveness. He is also very muscular and very agile. He packed a decent left hook and like any other ALA boxer, he was very fit.
He reminds me of another popular ALA boxer Andy Tabanas who was undefeated, for a long time, in the 90's. Andy fought for the world title several times but was unlucky. He retired leaving behind him a colorful boxing career but without a world title.
Now 20-year-old and still undefeated, Melindo has a bright future ahead of him. He still has a lot to improve though and he should impress the boxing fans when he clashes with the Korean pug on Saturday night. He should remember that this fight will be televised live over ABS-CBN as well as in the worldwide's TFC channel.
He should also remember that the entire city of Cagayan de Oro is behind him. His no. 1 fan, Misamis Oriental governor Oscar Moreno might come to Cebu for the fight.
We have seen an improvement in Milendo's arsenal when he knocked out Thai's Komirit Twinsgym in the fourth round to defend his WBC Youth Intercontinental title in Dubai last April 23.
Komirit was only a replacement for Columbian Devis Perez who could not get a connecting flight to Dubai because of the Icelandic volcanic ash fall which suspended the flights all over Europe during that time.
My only hope this Saturday is that he will continue his winning ways and probably fight for the world title this year.

CEBU CITY – One of ALA's brightest prospects gave the visiting Korean a bitter boxing lesson after Melindo outpowered and outclassed Jin-Man Jeon knocking out the Korean who unwisely came toe to toe with the master boxer at the Waterfront Hotel & Casino here tonight. A powerful left uppercut by Melindo at 43 seconds of the second round went home to the face of Jeon that sent the Korean lumped to the canvas unable to beat th count. The highly rated Melindo is now looking for an opportunity to challenge any of the lower-weight world champions.

WITH the city’s promising tourism industry, more investors are coming to enter the hotel business.
Mayor Vicente Emano said another first-class hotel will be constructed here, which will be at par with the best hotels in Manila. The mayor is optimistic that this will not only usher in more developments but will also improve the lives of Kagay-anons as it will open more job opportunuties for them.“Usa ka Manila-based investor ang motukod niini nga hotel nga susama sa mga best hotels didto sa kauluhan. Atong gikalipay kini nga kalambuan kay makahatag kini sa dugang kahigayon sa panarbaho sa atong katawhan ug usab makapabibo sa kalihokan sa ekonomiya sa dakbayan,” he announced in a press statement. dark_knight_detectve September 1st, 2010, 05:53 PM Mindanao eyes more than P1-B investments in energy, agriculture (http://www.businessmirror.com.ph/home/regions/749-mindanao-eyes-more-than-p1-b-investments-in-energy-agriculture)
Written by Jennifer A. Ng / Reporter

MINDANAO is seeking to attract more than P1 billion in investments, mostly in the energy, agribusiness and mining sectors, to support the region’s development.
Business people from the region presented investment proposals during the Mindanao Investment Forum held in Pasay City yesterday.
“The regional office of the Department of Trade and Industry indicated a minimum figure of P1 billion for energy-related projects. This is an indicative figure.
We hope to achieve or even surpass this level,” said Jaime Ralph U. Paguio, president of the Cagayan de Oro Chamber of Commerce and Industry, on the sidelines of a press briefing of the event yesterday.
Paguio said Mindanao is keen on attracting more investments in the energy sector to help avert a power crisis in the future.
He noted that from January to June this year, the region had to contend with a shortfall of 600 megawatts of power.
“Of course, the power problem is a cause of concern among businesses in the region. We need to assure that there is a steady supply of power in Mindanao,” he said.
Paguio said he hopes power-generation companies will look into the possibility of tapping Mindanao’s water sources like rivers and tributaries, as well for power-generation purposes.
Geothermal power, he said, is also something which can be developed further aside from investments in the energy sector, and investment packages in agribusiness, mariculture and shipping.
The Mindanao Investment Forum is a prelude to the annual Mindanao Business Conference, which this year is being hosted by the Cagayan de Oro Chamber of Commerce. It will run on Sept. 17 and 18 in Cagayan de Oro City.
The conference is organized by the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCI), with support from the Cagayan de Oro city government, United States Agency for International Development’s Growth with Equity in Mindanao Program, and the Mindanao Development Authority.
The Mindanao Business Conference is the largest of the five area conferences organized by the PCCI. The others are held in Northern Luzon, Southern Luzon, the National Capital Region and the Visayas, leading up to the largest business-sector gathering at the national level, the annual Philippine Business Conference.

dark_knight_detectve September 1st, 2010, 06:33 PM Biggest Loser holds auditions in Iloilo City (http://www.thenewstoday.info/2010/09/01/biggest.loser.holds.auditions.in.iloilo.city.html)
By Kathy M. Villalon
ABS-CBN's Desiree Bretana, Ronald Padriga and Charie Ginete-Ilon with the writer and Darlene Delgado.THE search for contenders in ABS-CBN’s ‘Biggest Loser Pinoy Edition’ has reached Iloilo City, with the directors themselves coming over to search for the city’s heaviest men and women.
Directors Laurenti Dyogi and Reilly Santiago met the Iloilo press over lunch at Cafe Laguna and shared some insights about ABS-CBN’s newest franchise.
Dyogi said that while Pinoy Big Brother and Philippine Dream Academy sought to build stars, Biggest Loser Pinoy Edition wishes to make improvements in the lives of obese people starting with their weight and on to their attitude in life, and eventually help them achieve their dreams.
Director Reilly Santiago. The audition, which was held at SM City Iloilo, was a whole day affair. Dyogi said that earlier in the morning, there were a few who came. “We thought that Iloilo City is full of sexy people. Anyway, more came at the later part of the day. Because they will appear in television, we chose our contestants based on their interesting personalities, which is a standard requirement for a reality program. We also tried to see if they have the determination as well as they are entertaining,” Dyogi said.
Apart from Iloilo, auditions were held in Cagayan de Oro, Legaspi, Cebu, Tarlac and Manila.
They are looking for 14 individuals. The males should weight at least 250 pounds and the females, 200.

Botoy September 2nd, 2010, 11:02 AM Selecta hires 30 drivers for roving cart
Friday, August 27, 2010
By Nicole J. Managbanag
ICE cream manufacturer Selecta is in need of 30 drivers for its roving ice cream cart.
Councilor Alexander Dacer, chair of the City Council committee on labor and employment, said Selecta channeled its job opening through the Public Employment Service Office (Peso) of the City Government.
Post your reaction to the Manila hostage crisis
Dacer said interested applicants must be at least high school graduate and must submit their bio-data, barangay clearance and police clearance at the Peso.
“This is a rare opportunity for jobseekers, especially those who did not have a college degree,” Dacer said.
Meanwhile, Dacer advises Kagay-anons seeking for employment abroad through the assistance of PESO and other placement agencies to comply with all the necessary requirements given during the pre-employment and pre-departure orientation seminars in Manila to avoid glitches.
He also reminded those who were accepted for employment abroad to observe the tradition and regulations in the country where they will be working and not to violate rules that might lead to imprisonment or deportation.
“Having an opportunity to work abroad, especially with a good paying salary, is considered very fortunate. I’m advising them to really take care of their jobs to gain extra point from their employers,” Dacer said.
Earlier, Lead agency based in Manila partnered with the city government since 2008 which resulted to the deployment of at least 500 Kagay-anons to Kuwait.
Dacer said for this month alone, around 78 residents were able to find employment as service crews in an American Food Company in Kuwait.
Among those accepted will work at KFC, Taco Bel and TGI Friday.
“We are very fortunate to have agencies that trust us. I am very thankful to them for believing in the ability of Kagay-anons,” Dacer said.

Botoy September 2nd, 2010, 11:06 AM Airline offers P499 seat sale for Davao-Oro route
Wednesday, September 1, 2010
CEBU Pacific (CEB) is offering a special P499 "Go Lite" seat sale to passengers who will be traveling from Davao to Cagayan de Oro from September 1 to 2 or until seats last, which is good for travel from October 1 to November 30, 2010.
Candice Iyog, CEB vice president for marketing and distribution, said they encourage guests to and from Cagayan de Oro and Davao to take advantage of this low fare opportunity from Cebu Pacific.
Other than the Davao-Cagayan de Oro route, CEB also offers the P499 ‘Go Lite’ seats sale for Manila-Iloilo, Cebu- Boracay (Caticlan), Cebu- Clark, Cebu-Dumaguete, Cebu-Dipolog, Cebu-General Santos, Cebu-Iloilo, Cebu-Ozamiz, Cebu-Pagadian and Davao-Iloilo routes.

Botoy September 2nd, 2010, 11:08 AM City to ban use of staple wires
Monday, August 30, 2010
A CITY councilor has passed an ordinance banning the use of staple wires in sealing packages, especially on food.
Councilor Juan Sia, chairperson of the committee on trade and industry, said the ordinance would prohibit the use of staple wires in sealing the products bought in pharmacies, grocery stores, restaurants and other establishments.
Sia filed the ordinance after learning that a little boy in Manila swallowed a staple wire while eating a “taho” recently. The boy had reportedly undergone operation.
“I will not allow this incident to happen in Cagayan de Oro or in other parts of the country especially to children. It is very dangerous when a staple wire or any foreign object will be swallowed,” Sia said.
With this, he encouraged the public to take precautionary measures to avoid such similar incident.
“If this ordinance will be approved, any establishment that will continue to use staple wires will be reprimanded,” Sia said. (Nicole J. Managbanag)

Shown above is the latest perspective of the proposed Ayala Mall in Cagayan de Oro City taken from City Hall…unless another one will be posted onsite in weeks to come.
Based on the latest design, the mall will still have three levels. The anchor store on the left (along Capt. Vicente Roa) is reportedly Robinsons Department Store, same with that of Abreeza in Davao. Quite interesting as clearly shown is the boutique hotel on the right rising above the mall.
http://cagayandeorodev.files.wordpress.com/2010/08/dsc_1523a.jpg?w=468&h=452
The boutique hotel shown below is I think 10 storeys high and will become a landmark structure in this area.
http://cagayandeorodev.files.wordpress.com/2010/08/dsc_1524a.jpg?w=468&h=473
Construction work (pile driving) will reportedly begin in October. Now, what the city needs to do is to prepare and implement a traffic plan in the area…ASAP!

Of the 14 examinees from XU, 12 passed the July 3-4, 2010 exams given in testing centers in Cagayan de Oro City, Manila, Baguio, Cebu, Dagupan, Davao, Iloilo, La Union, Legaspi, Lucena, Pagadian, Pampanga, Tacloban, and Zamboanga City.
XU has seven first-time takers who all passed the test; five of the seven repeaters also passed.
Data from the Professional Regulations Commission (PRC) showed that Cagayan de Oro College had 25 takers who passed, out of 120 examinees, or a passing average of 21.57 percent; Lourdes College, 23.53 percent, with 12 passers out of 51 examinees; STI College-Cagayan de Oro Campus, 5.88 percent, with one passer out of 17 takers. The figures for other schools were not immediately available.
PRC in Northern Mindanao data, meanwhile, showed that Capitol University got 66.95 percent passing rate for first-time takers, with 306 passers out of 404; 71 repeaters took the exam but 58 failed, translating to a passing rate of 16.90 percent.
Liceo de Cagayan University had 41.4 percent passing rate, with 124 first-time takers passing the exam out of 299.
Didith Goles of PRC-Northern Mindanao said majority of XU's March 2010 graduates did not take NLE for July as they opted to prepare for the December exam.
XU is considered among the top five performing nursing schools in the Philippines with a passing average of 95 percent. It has steadily produced a number of topnotchers since 2006. (Nicole J. Managbanag/Paul John A. Vesagas)

Botoy September 2nd, 2010, 11:20 AM ‘Pro-green’ shoes
Wednesday, August 25, 2010
By Nicole J. Managbanag
DO you know the brand of shoes that “Bella” of the famous Twilight Saga uses in real life and during the duration of the movie?
Actress Kristen Stewart, who plays Bella in the movie, uses Simple Shoes brand that is eco pure and with a pallet mixture made from millions of tiny microbes that are added to the plastic, ethylene venyl acetate (EVA) and rubber mixtures while still in liquid form.
Updates on President Benigno Aquino III's presidency
Ms. Stewart’s choice of shoes greatly shows her being an advocate of the environment.
Eco pure is an additive that is used in EVA and rubber of all bio-D collection midsoles and outsoles and in all plastic shoe hangers and shoe bags.
Adding Eco pure shortens the lifespan of the materials to 20 years in aerobic (compost) or anaerobic (landfill) conditions.
Cherica Caiña, a local distributor of Simple Shoes, said having this kind of shoes helps save Mother Earth as well as minimizes climate change.
Caiña said Simple Shoes has been awarded the first ever Footwear Plus Green Award in 2007 and 2008.
“Simple Shoes have five organic compounds such as recycled plastic, eco-certified leather and suede, recycled car tires, certified organic cotton and hemp fibers to make up with such extraordinary shoes out from the recycled materials that will not stick around in our landfills for as long as one thousand years,” she said.
Caiña started introducing these brands through close friends who love sneakers and are nature lovers, too.
Her shoes became an instant hit since the brand can only be bought through the Internet and at the Trinoma Square and Rustan’s Mall in Manila.
“Simple Shoes have a catchy material that really attracts nature lovers, which is the hemp or Cannabis Sativa,” Caiña said.
A hemp is a plant that grows like a weed in many different climates. It is one of the strongest, most durable and breathable fibers available.
“This is also the kind of hemp our famous national hero Dr. Jose Rizal used to complement his barong apparel during the olden days,” Caiña said.
In modern times, hemp has been used for industrial purposes including paper, textiles, biodegradable plastics, construction, health food, fuel and medical purposes.
“This is not the hemp that the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency goes after,” Caiña emphasized.
What inspired her to sell Simple Shoes is the fact that she does not only earn money but can also promote her advocacy on climate change.
“This is one way of minimizing the continuous distraction of our Mother Nature,” she says.
Though Simple Shoes sell from P3,000 to P4,000 each, which is quite heavy on the pocket, Caiña said “it is worth wearing as it is like saving Mother Earth in your own little way.”
Caiña’s collection of Simple Shoes is being displayed at her residence at the corner of Capistrano-Echem Sts., this city. She accepts orders through 0929-8308836.

Puentevella said the GMA coverage is aimed at promoting Cagayan de Oro at the same time provide entertainment to Kagay-anons.
"For the last three years, GMA has been very consistent in covering the Kagay-an Festival. Every year, we look forward to this activity as we also want to share the beauty of Cagayan de Oro," she said.

PROJECT WATCH: Limketkai Hotel as of August 17
Posted on August 17, 2010 by damarre
http://cagayandeorodev.files.wordpress.com/2010/08/img_4715-copy.jpg
Exactly a little over a month since my last update, Limketkai Hotel is progressing very fast as the main columns of Cagayan de Oro’s first 18-storey hotel are very much visible now even from the outside. The steel columns are now as high as three storeys.
Workers are seen working very early and reports say construction c0ntinues even at night. Most notably, the contractor is slowly installing its tower crane or cranes (I counted at least 2 or perhaps a 3rd one) as seen in the photos below. Maybe in the next few days we’ll now how many t-cranes will be used. These equipment makes construction faster especially in high-rise structures as loading of heavy materials are easily done.
Just browse over the pictures and click for a larger view. I was tempted to take a closer picture at the north side (beside Gateway Tower 1) because they have removed the steel barrier and you can clearly see (just a few feet away) the steel columns being erected. If you pass by the area by just simply walking towards McDonald’s, you can stop by and take a closer look (and take some snapshots). Maybe, Ill do it next time. As of now, just be contented with the following pictures.

Development of Market City is now on the exterior painting stage. However, much work still to be done on the interiors. The eastern part of the building (fronting La Paz) is where the SM SaveMore will be located. Some fastfood chains will be established near the bus terminal area. Stalls for the old locators will be in the middle part.
Based on the info, the contractor is targeting project completion by the fourth quarter of this year. More photos below.

Posted on August 18, 2010 by damarre
Remember “Reyna del Rio”, the floating restaurant near city hall which was swept away in early 2009 due to the flood? Well, another businessman is planning to construct another floating restaurant along the Cagayan de Oro River.
Vice Mayor Ian Acenas, chair of the City Council’s Committee on Tourism, said entrepreneur Frumencio A. Lao has submitted a request to operate a floating fine dining restaurant.
Accordingly, the floating restaurant would boast two stationary components with three level structures on top of a Catamaran-type boat to be located in front of City Hall. The floating restaurant is said to accommodate about 400 dine-in customers.
Another component of the proposal is a motorized floating restaurant with a Catamaran design, which will cruise the Cagayan River which can accommodate about 50 dine-in customers and will have stopover zones in Barangay 6, Toribio Chaves Sts., Macanhan in Barangay Carmen, Zone 4 Pasil in Kauswagan, Punta Bonbon, and Punta Macabalan with customers giving not only delectable food but a complete view of the river.
In his request, Lao said the floating restaurant will surely make a new tourist attraction in the city with its “design, ambiance, quality of service, array of unique mouth watering native and foreign menu as its outmost priority.”
Lao said part of the business proposal is to help clean the Cagayan de Oro River.
In reviewing the proposal, Acenas said Lao must make sure that the floating restaurant must be very durable to prevent any untoward incident during heavy rains or flood.
“The City Government welcomes this new attraction to our city and is in favor of the proposed restaurant. We are extending our full support to this project as this will give a boost to our city,” Acenas said.
He added the project would help generate local employment in the city and provide a boost to the tourism industry.

Botoy September 2nd, 2010, 12:49 PM Mindanao’s business leaders target P1-billion investments
Posted on September 2, 2010 by damarre
ORGANIZERS of the 19th Mindanao Business Conference this month hope the event will attract P1 billion in investments in the energy, agriculture and mining sectors.
“We hope to [generate] more than P1 billion in investments in three priority sectors — energy, agriculture and mining — as a result of the upcoming business conference,” Jaime Rafael U. Paguio, president of Cagayan de Oro Chamber of Commerce and Industry Foundation, Inc., said in a press conference in Manila yesterday for the event, which will be held in Cagayan de Oro on Sept. 17-18.
Mr. Paguio said Mindanao’s bout with a crippling power shortage amid the dry spell in the first half highlighted the urgency of increasing generation capacity. Even with the onset of rains in late-June that filled up dams that power hydroelectric plants — which provide half of Mindanao’s requirement — the entire island continues to have thin reserves, amounting to just 31 megawatts yesterday, according to the Web site of the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines.
“We’re trying to bring in more investments for energy generation because Mindanao experienced shortage in power supply in the first semester of the year which greatly affected businesses,” Mr. Paguio said.
He said a power shortage is costly, not only due to lost man-hours and disrupted, delayed production — which, in turn, means lost customers — but also because businesses have to pass on the cost of remedial measures. “If we’re talking about generators that some businesses have acquired or will be acquiring, then they would have to recover the cost in the price of their products,” Mr. Paguio said.
Mindanao’s energy security, he added, lies not only in ensuring sufficient capacity, but also in having “a mix of energy sources — hydro, coal, geothermal, solar, etc.”
The conference will also seek investments in agriculture, in order to help push the plan of making Mindanao the country’s food production hub. This thrust, he said, requires “more diversity of crops and establishment of additional mariculture parks.”
Ruben A. Vegafria, conference director, said this thrust also involves building up the island’s processing sector, which will add value to farm products.
Mr. Paguio also cited the need for “additional processing for…mining products” to increase value.
Miguel B. Varela, chairman emeritus of the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry, said in the same briefing that the conference will draw up resolutions that will recommend to President Benigno Simeon C. Aquino III how best to improve the business environment of Mindanao. — KAM
