Great Pianist to play in CdO (http://www.businessweekmindanao.com/2010/11/great-pianist-to-play-in-cdo.html)

It’s a rare treat when great artists come to the provinces for concert. German pianist Peter von Wienhardt will play at Rodelsa Hall as part of their annual series of concerts. Music of Haydn, Piazolla, Liszt and Gershwin will be featured in the programme.

This diverse repertoire allows for a most unique musical experience. Few artists dare to venture to more than three different musical styles. In this case it’s not only varied music, but the best of the representative pieces of their respective styles.
For example, Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue will be featured, along with Liszt’s Mefisto Waltz.

These are indeed the pinnacle of the composer’s output. Interestingly, also featured will be a Piazolla work. It will be recalled how the Trio Con Brio which played in beginning of September this year, introduced some Piazolla in their program.

Piazolla, being an Argentinian Tango composer of the 20th Century, will be arranged for solo piano by Wienhardt himself. This will be a real treat for classical music aficionados and the new audiences.

City To Pursue Privatization Of CdeO’s Garbage Services (http://www.cagayandeoro.gov.ph/?page=news&id=1942)
by Lorebeth C. Requiroso/ City Council Office

THE privatization of garbage collection services in the city is in the offing.

The City Council during its regular session yesterday presided over by Councilor Ian Mark Nacaya adopted a resolution pursuing this and authorizes Mayor Vicente Emano to accept any and all proposals and to negotiate with the proponents for the terms and conditions most advantageous to the city. Councilor Nadya Eman-Elipe, chair of the adhoc committee created by the mayor to study this scheme, favorably recommended the privatization of garbage services in order to improve services to the city’s constituents. Based on the report of the committee, the city is only able to achieve 70-percent collection efficiency. With the privatization move, this can be raised to 99.9 percent, she added. RECOMMENDATIONSThe adhoc committee recommended that garbage collection services be opened to interested private entities that shall introduce and promote garbage segregation and provide necessary collection facilities leaving non-recyclable wastes for disposal. The lady councilor assured that the committee has also recommended that private entities should absorb casual or job order personnel and provide suitable emoluments and benefits to them. It is not only the welfare of the employees that was looked into, she said. Private entities interested to undertake this, should also consider the welfare and livelihood of the waste pickers/informal settlers who live near the dumpsite at Upper Dagong, Calaanan and who are making a living out of the garbage dumped and collected. The privatization plan will only cover garbage collection services. However, for efficient solid waste management, the adhoc committee recommended that the proponent shall also maintain the operate the sanitary landfill. The committee proposed that that the proponent should be open for any recommendation from the city/ CSWMB on matters that will benefit the city with regards to the effective collection and disposal management in line with the mandate of RA 9003, an act providing for an ecological solid waste management program. Councilor Adrian Barba, is the vice-chair of the adhoc body. Members are the City Planning and Development Coordinator, City Treasurer, City Administrator, City Legal Officer and City Public Services Officer. (LCR)

SHAPII - Salay, Misamis Oriental taps MUST extension services for skills training

Cagayan de Oro City (11 November) -- The Salay Handmade Paper Industries Foundation, Incorporated (SHAPII) linked with MUST extension services for its Skills Training Program. The president of SHAPII Foundation, Loreta Rafisura, even plans to establish a training center in Salay, Misamis Oriental soon.

Dr. Vicky Sumanpan, extension director of MUST, affirms that SHAPII Foundation has been MUST's forefront in the implementation of private-sector led programs in the fields of education and youth development in Salay. Since the inception of the extension division, MUST has been sharing knowledge and skills through technology experts, with an end in view of promoting quality life in neighboring communities.

The training program primarily caters to the underprivileged but deserving Filipino youth. They can either be high school or out-of-school youths. The program, however, is also open to other people needing trainings in livelihood and development.

The early batches of trainings with SHAPII were related to computer technology. The College of Engineering and Architecture handled the first batch on November 7, 14, 21 and 28.

Those trainings were specifically on Basic Computer Literacy, which included Basic PC Operation, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Powerpoint and Internet Usage. Their participants were out-of-school youths, LGU personnel, and student and teachers from Salay and other towns.

The participants were happy because the technology learned is aligned with their work today. They are hopeful it can also help them find better opportunities in the future.

Lately, Mrs. Rafisura requested for another MOA to conduct similar trainings in 2011 targeting benefeciaries in the eastern municipalities of Misamis Oriental. (Victoria O. Sumanpan/MUST)

Ayala to open boutique hotel in two years
Business World

PROPERTY giant Ayala Land, Inc. will start commercial operations of its boutique hotel in the sprawling Fort Bonifacio business district in Taguig in 2012.

The Ayala-led firm has broken ground for the first of five boutique hotels that will start a chain of hotels for selected locations and demographics.

“There is a high demand especially from the younger generation of travelers for accommodations that have great accessibility and unique style,” Jose Emmanuel H. Jalandoni, vice-president and group head of Ayala Land Capital and Hotels, said in a statement.

The boutique hotel will have 180 rooms, meeting rooms, communal spaces, a business corner, a gym, a swimming pool, and a rooftop bar facing the Serendra residential complex.

It will be located on 11th street, one of the main roads in Bonifacio Global City.

The boutique hotel will cater to both foreign and local business travellers.

Ayala Land will also launch boutique hotels in Alabang, Muntinlupa, Quezon City, Davao, and Cagayan de Oro.

“The boutique hotels are considered essential elements of Ayala Land’s self-contained mixed-use business centers,” the company said.

Ayala Land’s main business is residential condominium development, malls, and office space.

In October, the property giant formed Ayala Hotels and Resort Corp., a new subsidiary to handle its hotel and resort business. It owns Ayala Hotels, Inc. that owns and operates Hotel Intercontinental in Makati and the Marriott Hotel in Cebu City.

Shares in Ayala Land -- whose nine-month profit rose by a third to P3.94 billion -- shed 2.35% or P0.40 to P16.60 yesterday.

Sec Robredo keynotes gov’t-private sector conference
Post Published: 11 November 2010
Author: BWM
Found in section: Abraham V. Llera

DILG’s Secretary Jesse M. Robredo will keynote the 1st Gov’t-Private Sector Conference On Our Country’s Economic Prospects Under the Aquino administration on November 18, 2010 at 2:00 PM at the Xavier Sports & Country Club in Cagayan de Oro City.

An estimated 94 mayors and 5 governors together with around 100 business leaders will come together to see how they could work together to hasten the realization of a bold Goldman Sachs prediction: that eleven more countries—in addition to the BRIC (Brazil, Russia, India, and China) will become the world’s largest economies in the 21st century. One of the countries Goldman Sachs identified is the Philippines.

The acronym was coined by Jim O’Neill of Goldman Sachs, a global investment banking and securities firm, and his team of economic researchers, in a paper called “The World Needs Better Economic BRICS.” Former Goldman Sachs employees include Robert Rubin who became Bill Clinton’s Secretary of the Treasury, and Henry Paulson, who occupied the same post under George W. Bush.

In November 2001, Goldman Sachs published its paper where it predicted that Brazil’s, Russia’s, India’s, and China’s combined economies would make the combined economies of the world’s current wealthiest countries in the world look like peanuts. In other words, Jim O’Neill and his team predicted a shift in global economic power away from the developed economies toward the developing world.

More incredibly, Goldman Sachs followed this up with another prediction about the Next Eleven (N-11)–those countries that could potentially have a BRIC-like impact in challenging the G7. Bangladesh, Egypt, Indonesia, Iran, Korea, Mexico, Nigeria, Pakistan,Turkey, Vietnam, and, hold your breath now, the Philippines!

“What are the prospects for the N-11 over the next few decades? Can the N-11 .dream. become a reality? What are the obstacles to success, and what would need to change to make success more likely?” asks Goldman Sachs in its paper, questions which could well be ones that should be asked of the Philippines. Conference speakers Dr. Bernardo M. Villegas and Dr. Rolando Dy will try to answer these questions during the conference.

The event is made possible with the help of BPI Family Savings Bank, United Coconut Planters Bank, Rep. Rufus B. Rodriguez (2nd District, Cagayan de Oro
City), and Rep Maximo B. Rodriguez (ABAMIN). A Brown Co Inc, worked closely with the University of Asia and the Pacific to put flesh into the idea. Dr. Villegas felt strongly that the LGUs should be involved as either the government or the private sector working independently would not be as effective as both working together. Thus it was decided to seek the help of DILG R10, which readily, agreed to help. The Oro Chamber was the final group whose help was tapped.

Invitations have been sent, but anyone who feels he has a contribution to make to the success of the discussions may still get in touch with the Secretariat at858 8937 Dresden Inocian or Mernita Ventura, or leave messages at www.abrownchanginglives.comwhere updates about the event could be had. Or interested parties may text or call 0908 865 9183.

P1.4B for Misamis Oriental 2011 budget
Friday, November 12, 2010

ALLOCATIONS for social services such as health and education will be significantly boosted in the proposed 2011 Misamis Oriental budget.

Vice Governor Norris Babiera said the proposed 2011 budget of P1.4 billion is significantly a "conservative" budget, only 10 percent higher than the 2010 budget.

"We're on 70 percent in our deliberation and so far, we have no problems with the departments that have already submitted their budget," Babiera told Sun.Star Cagayan de Oro.

Of the proposed budget, social services have a bigger share, amounting to P611 billion, or 43.11 percent of the total budget, followed by general public services and economic budget, the three together being the top priority.

Babiera emphasized that the budget is carefully reviewed by the Provincial Council based on the Provincial Government's spending income and expenditure.

"We also checked if the 2010 budget has been complied with because under the local budget memorandum circular, the expenditure should not exceed the income," Babiera said.

Nevertheless, he said, there's no problem with the estimated income and expenditure.

Meanwhile, Babiera said there is nothing wrong with Governor Oscar Moreno's intention of aiming high in his 2011 budget, citing that this would help encourage department heads and everybody to work harder to reach their target.

"Because if he won't aim high, there would be complacency among the employees. They would no longer work hard," he said. (Annabelle L. Ricalde)

Opol receives IAUD 2010 Award

Cagayan de Oro City (11 November) -- The municipality of Opol in Misamis Oriental, together with New Lucena in Iloilo, received the prestigious Grand Award of the International Association for Universal Design Award 2010 as being part of the Non-Handicapping Environment Project of Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) in partnership with the National Council on Disability Affairs (NCDA).

The project was recognized for its outstanding achievement and contribution to the development, delivery and dissemination of Universal Design.

Mayor Dexter B. Yasay received the award during the 3rd International Conference for Universal Design on November 1, 2010 in Hamamatsu, Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan.

The Grand Award was awarded to the most outstanding among the winners of the Excellence Award which were also the result of a rigorous evaluation process of large number of applications coming from both public and private individuals and organizations from all over the world.

The IAUD Award are given to individuals and organizations for their outstanding achievements and contributions towards the realization of a Universal Design society in which many people can enjoy a meaningful and comfortable life free from inconveniences due to differences in ethnic or cultural origin, customs, nationality, sex, age or capacity.

The Non-Handicapping Environment Project which started in October 2008 and will end on September 12, 2012 aims to improve physical and social accessibility through the construction and renovation of public establishments and empowerment of PWDs. Creating physical barrier-free environments is based on the concept of "Universal Design."

Opol, as one of the pioneering municipalities of the project, is determined to create a physically barrier-free municipality. The Local Government of Opol has started rehabilitating public facilities to be accessible to PWDs. In fact, the Municipal Hall has already a ramp with handrail and an accessible toilet.

In the area of social awareness, intensive IEC campaigns have been conducted. It has a weekly radio program on NHE/CBR hosted by a PWD. News and information on NHE/CBR are regularly featured in the weekly newsletter. For a and assemblies are also regularly conducted.

The PWD Focal Person provides technical assistance every DAP Association meetings and conducts regular visit to DAP members.

With the kind of support from the LGU, the PWDs are now actively participating in local activities as well as in local development. Executive Order 2009-18 included PWD in the Local Development Council.

"NHE Project activities such as Disability Equality Training, Peer Counseling and Leadership and Advocacy Training helped me recognize and understand my disability," Mary Jane Villanueva, President of the Association of Differently-abled Persons in Opol, said.

"As I gain more self-esteem, I hope that other members will also be more empowered and confident to overcome all the difficulties being faced by the PWDs. Make our community accessible to all,'' she added.

This is also the aspiration of Mayor Dexter B. Yasay.

"The implementation of the project in Opol is in infant stage unlike in cities and municipalities in developed countries which are on the verge of a physically accessible community. To become physically and socially barrier-free community needs budgetary requirement but on our own little way through the help of JICA, the private sector and the PWDs themselves, the creation of a non-handicapping environment is not far to achieve," he said. Site development of Ayala Mall in Cagayan de Oro City is now in full swing. Site preparation, clearing and pile driving are being undertaken at the same time as seen in the latest photos of the site taken just this morning.

About 70% of the 3.2-hectare lot have been cleared already with pile driving and excavation works being focused on the southwest portion, near the proposed site of the hotel component. You can see some piles already driven with more concrete piles being delivered onsite. There’s also an early indication of deep excavation on that portion where the proposed hotel is rumored to be located (I took some photos of the excavation).

There were at least two contractors onsite: UKC Builders (for the site clearing and pile driving); and DDT Konstract, Inc. Personnel of the latter firm were seen along the perimeter doing some excavation works for the perimeter lines.

I took the photos from three (3) vantage points: Gaisano Food Court, Capt. V. Roa Extn. (near Graphics) and Corrales Ave. (near NMMC). Browse over them by clicking each to see full size.

PROJECT WATCH: Gaisano Bulua as of November 12 (http://cagayandeorodev.wordpress.com/2010/11/12/project-watch-gaisano-bulua-as-of-november-12/)

http://cagayandeorodev.files.wordpress.com/2010/11/img_6367.jpg?w=468&h=351

The structural design of the under construction Gaisano Bulua has now taken shape. The commercial undertaking is right across De Oro Pacific Home Plus along busy Bulua Highway.

Without any press release, it’s hard to determine what Mr. Stephen Gaisano has in mind for his latest branch so we’ll just rely on assumption and rumors. As shown below, there’s a large opening on the left side of the building leading to the interior of the compound which I assume to include parking spaces.

http://cagayandeorodev.files.wordpress.com/2010/11/img_6361.jpg?w=468&h=351

You can also try to count the main columns to know the depth of the building from the highway.

http://cagayandeorodev.files.wordpress.com/2010/11/img_6365-copy.jpg?w=468&h=351

Try to compare the usual height of a 2-storey building beside it… Gaisano has a high ceiling.

http://cagayandeorodev.files.wordpress.com/2010/11/img_6368.jpg?w=468&h=351

If I’m not mistaken, I’m assuming this is the irregular shape of the Bulua property. The pictures seen above and below show the main expanse of the small frontage along the highway shown on the map.

http://cagayandeorodev.files.wordpress.com/2010/11/bulualoc.jpg?w=468&h=351

With the above updates, I’m expecting an opening by middle of 2011….

Shares in Ayala Land -- whose nine-month profit rose by a third to P3.94 billion -- shed 2.35% or P0.40 to P16.60 yesterday.

its a good thing that ayala's boutique hotel in cdeo has already started. this would certainly mean that hotel industry is booming in the city.

i went to the courtyard this morning. the agent told me that the courtyards is similar to any high rise condo. they use the terms like leasable lot, inner units and end units. each owner of a unit is not the owner of the lot but a part corporation. in short, dili ka tag-iya sa lote nga gabarog imong unit but kamong tanan sa subd. the model unit's price is around Php5.8M.

Mao gyod na ang concept sa condo, wala gyod kay lote. Gihimo nila nang condo aron pud nga ang mga foreigner pede makpalit ug unit diha. Spot cash ng 5.8M hehe

Mamma Maria’s Pizzeria, known as the “Home of the Biggest Pizza in the Philippines”, has opened its first branch in Cagayan de Oro City along Corrales Avenue corner Archbishop Hayes Street.

The Bacolod-based franchise boasts of a 52-inch diameter pizza. Mamma Maria’s Pizzeria is also making a 63-inch pizza, which comes with four different flavors which also aims to be the biggest pizza in the “Guinness World Book of Records”.

City to transfer Eastbound Terminal back to Agora

http://cagayandeorodev.files.wordpress.com/2010/11/colorful20jeepneys20cagayan20de20oro.jpg?w=468&h=351

The City Government is planning to transfer the eastbound terminal back to its original location in Agora. This after the City Council recently passed an ordinance pushing for the creation of another terminal for eastbound provincial public utility jeepneys and shuttle vans at the New Agora now Market City.

Vice Mayor Ian Acenas said the nearly 5,000 square meter eastbound terminal in Gusa will be given back to its original donor James Giam once abandoned.

The “conditional donation”, records show, was made in 1998 between Giam and the City Hall that paved the way for the P34 million Gusa Terminal’s opening in 2002.

In his letter to the city council, Mayor Vicente Emano said his proposal to transfer the public jeepneys and public vans from Gusa to Agora was based on the “soundness” of the recommendation made by the Roads and Traffic Administration (RTA).

Perhaps, the terminal component of Market City involves not just spaces for buses but also eastbound PUJs and public vans.

Firms to pay 10% amusement tax
Friday, November 12, 2010

CAGAYAN de Oro City Government is requiring establishments in the city that would show Manny Pacquiao's fight live on Sunday, November 14, to pay a 10 percent amusement tax.

City treasurer Lino Daral said malls, bars, restaurants, movie houses and hotels that charge an additional amount for the live showing must pay for amusement taxes for the additional service.

Daral said his team of inspectors will go to every establishment in the city to inform them of the additional tax, which will be paid during the filing of taxes in January next year.

"Establishment owners showing the fight are reminded to pay 10 percent of the gross admission price as amusement tax," Daral said, emphasizing that the amusement tax was based on Section 125 of the Bureau of Internal Revenue, which states that "there shall be collected from the proprietor, lessee or operator of cockpits, cabarets, night or day clubs, boxing exhibitions, professional basketball games, jai-alai and race tracks, a tax equivalent to 18 percent in the case of cockpits, and 18 percent charge to the cabarets, night or day clubs, and 10 percent for any boxing exhibitions."

For the purpose of the amusement tax, he said, the term "gross receipts" embraces all the receipts of the proprietor, lessee or operator of the amusement place, which also includes income from television, radio and motion picture rights, if any.

Daral said the amusement tax, under a local city ordinance, has been reduced to 10 percent from 30 percent.

"Those who fail to pay the amusement tax will pay an additional two percent penalty on the taxable amount per month of delay," Daral said.

He added that the City Government also has the option to prosecute establishments that refuse to pay the appropriate amusement tax despite repeated demands.

The much awaited fight between Pacquiao and Antonio Margarito for the World Boxing Council super-welterweight title will be held on November 13, Saturday (November 14, Sunday in Manila) at the Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

Daral said Mayor Vicente Emano has ordered for a live showing of the fight for the less-fortunate at the Cogon and Carmen public markets. The showing will be free from the 10 percent amusement tax since it is also offered for free. (Nicole J. Managbanag)

Photo above was taken early this morning. The pizza chain was able to create a 52-inch pizza in Bacolod City which is good for about 25 people. I don’t know if they have that one big in their CDO branch.

click to enlarge

Based on the above menu (taken from Cebu outlet), the pizza chain offers different pizza flavors. Sizes for their pizza range from eight inches to as big as 30 inches. Are you going to make a special order for the 52-inch?

Another pizza outlet opens…it’s pizza time once again in CDO.

it seems to me like theres a mall war and pizza war here in cdeo. thats good because this indicates that kagay-anons like to shop and dine. :banana:

SM Digital Theatre comes to Cagayan de Oro with Avatar 3D (http://www.americanchronicle.com/articles/view/198767")

Mike Banos

After a long wait, Cagayan de Oro can finally enjoy digital cinema following SM Cagayan de Oro´s Nov. 12 launch of its SM Digital Theatre at Cinema 1.

And as succinctly and accurately marketed by SM, its digital cinema is "So Clear. So Real."

Roberto Palermo, SM Regional Manager for Cinema Vismin, explained to us during the brief launching program how the digital cinema operates much like your PC and stores its movie in a hard disk instead of the traditional 35mm film in canisters.

And that ain´t all: SM Digital Cinema 1 also has 40 selected moving chairs similar to those in theme parts where you can not only see movie in 3D but experience some movement as well to truly enhance the digital experience.

To make the launching experience complete, SM Digital Cinema chose Avatar 3D, James Cameron´s blockbuster masterpiece which has already overtaken his "Titanic" as the best selling movie of all time, as its opening feature. And this wasn´t just Avatar the best selling 2D version but the "Director´s Cut" in 3D no less, according to Michelle Bitco, SM Cagayan de Oro Digital Theatre manager.

Like my colleague Orwin Austria, the last 3D movie we both saw was a Dracula feature sometime in the late 70s and it wasn´t much of a story, more a showcase for the 3D technology which at that time still used the cardboard specs with questionable hygiene since these were the same specs recycled for the next batch of movie goers.

In this age of the viral sore eyes, SM took pains to stress all its 3D glasses (now made of sturdier plastic and cellophane wrapped to ensure hygiene) were safe and sanitary.

Avatar Director´s Cut 3D is a somewhat longer version of the original theatrical release and includes new spectacular scenes which enhance the 3D experience such as the cow hunting by the Na´vi tribe, scenes of the school where Dr. Grace taught them English and of course, extended fight sequences which have us dodging this way and that to evade the projectiles jumping out of the screen.

At P250 per person, the SM Digital Cinema isn´t cheap at over twice the price of blockbusters in regular cinema. But you get free snacks to go along with your ticket and of course, the digital 3D experience is just light years away from regular cinema, especially when you throw in the jumping chairs and of course, the movie selection SM plans to screen: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (to be released in two parts), The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, TRON: Legacy, to mention a few.

Some others in our wish list we hope SM would also consider: Toy Story 3, Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga´Hoole, Thor, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, and of course, Alice in Wonderland.

Our thanks to Roberto Palermo, Clara Elizaga, Cons Arce, Ivy Guantero and Michelle Bitco, the rest of the SM Cagayan de Oro officers and staff from inviting us to the launching of a new experience. Hangtud sa sunod! Print Email

INFO 1: SM City renovation will begin January 2011.... works to take 9 months (accordingly to be opened ahead of Ayala Mall which is set to be inaugurated in 2012) ... the whole facade will be replaced with aluminum claddings type; dominant color - somewhat fleshy to light yellow; whole ceiling to be replaced... new very large floor tiles to be placed over the old ones) ... all stalls will have new glassy walls ... construction work to be done at night so as not to disrupt mall operations duirng the day.

INFO 2: Digital Theater grand launching this afternoon (invited guests only); to be opened to public tomorow (cost - P250.00)

:cheers:

SM badly needs a renovation. They should come up with something that would turn their mall int'resting, something worth the gas, something worth the fare going to the uptown.

City to transfer Eastbound Terminal back to Agora

So what will happen to the east bound terminal?

^^They will give it back to the donor. I found this one inappropriate action, after investing heavily on putting up terminal building then in just a decade you will abandon it. :) hmmnn business pressure nga naman.

Ba? And that's 30 million ++.. They could have just used the money for the urban poor relocation program. If I were to decide, I would have opted to turn agora entirely into commercial area, then tranfer all east/southbound utilities to Gusa. I think that property in Gusa is big enough to accomodate a WestBoundTerminal-like facility, given also that it's along diversion road. I'm wishing lapasan traffic a good luck once gusa terminal operation has been transfered to Agora.

Rodriguez Brothers File Bills/Res for CdeO Protection (http://themindanaocurrent.blogspot.com/2010/11/rodriguez-brothers-file-billsres-for.html)

The Rodriguez brothers filed bills in congress that are designed to protect and improve the life in the city.

Two of the bills filed recently are the Total Log Ban in the city and the declaration of the city as a Mining Free Zone.

Both bills were originally filed in the fourteenth congress by Representative Rufus B. Rodriguez and had passed the approval of the then committee on Natural Resources. This time, it was refilled with ABAMIN Party List Representative Maximo B. Rodriguez, Jr. as co-author.

In the explanatory note for both bills Congressman Rufus emphasized that the flash floods that affected Cagayan de Oro, and will continue to affect the city, are results of the logging and mining operations in the hinterlands. Logging makes a forest less dense and causes soil erosion. It also degrades watersheds and diminishes the quality of drinking water.

Mining, on the otherhand, has adverse effects both to humans and the environment. Aside from adding toxic chemicals to the ore, it strips-off large areas of top soil of all flora and fauna.

Rodriguez pointed out that just recently, Cagayan de Oro City has suffered flash floods and mining operations in barangays Dansolihon, Mambuaya, Taglimao, Tagpangi, Tuburan and Tumpagon are blamed for such flashfloods. The flashfloods destroyed not just properties but agricultural areas and farm-to-market roads as well. Based on the Progress Reports of the Regional Disaster Coordinating Council of Region 10 based in Cagayan de Oro City, the flashfloods of January 3, 2009 have affected 21,605 persons or 5,223 families in the city and have damaged houses with 141 totally damaged and 1,410 partially damaged in an estimated cost of 1.9 million as of January 8, 2009 only.

In the January 11, 2009 floods that befell Cagayan de Oro City, 37,086 persons or 7,410 families were affected with 94 houses totally damaged and 71 partially damaged. Logging operations were also to blamed for these flashfloods.

The brothers have sought the immediate approval of these Bills.

Another resolution filed by both recently was to urge the committee on transportation to conduct an inquiry, in aid of legislation on the checkpoints put up by the LTO in Cagayan de Oro City which was based on complaints filed by victims of personnel demanding money from motorists. An entrapment operation was set by Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) a few months back resulted in the apprehension of LTO personnel and deputized officers of the agency.

The brothers are hoping that the committee will start the hearing soon.

ABS-CBN made a history by launching a new TV Patrol World with the Philippines' highly respected news anchors Kabayan Noli de Castro, Korina Sanchez, and Ted Failon last November 8, 2010. And that night, the news program ended with a greeting from Korina Sanchez to the City of Cagayan de Oro. This evening, TV Patrol World ended again with a greeting from Korina. This time to the people of Balingasag, Misamis Oriental. :)

White Water Action

White water rafting and kayaking are the newest action sports in the Philippines. For decades, while adventure-hungry travelers flocked to the rivers of Nepal and Borneo, the superb rapids of the Philippines lay undiscovered. But that's changing fast: white water action is now available on half a dozen rivers in the Visayas and Mindanao, and more are being explored.

White Water Adventure Destinations

* Bubunawan/Cagayan de Oro River, Misamis Oriental
* Tibiao River, Panay
* Calbiga River, Samar
* Tacloban
* Chico River, Tuguegarao

Exploring

Caving

Some of the most spectacular sceneries in the Philippines lie deep underground. Almost every island has cave sytems, some accessible to the casual tourist, others challenging the skilled spelunker. Beneath the earth lie rivers and waterfalls, narrow passages, and vaulted chambers filled with a surreal array of limestone and crystal formations. Many caves are totally unexplored, presenting the ultimate thrill in adventure travel: the chance to walk where no human has ever been.

Must explore Philippine caves in:

* Peñablanca, Cagayan
* Boracay, Aklan
* Sagada, Mountain Province
* Bukidnon

Mountain Biking

From the mountains of Baguio to the beaches of Boracay, the Philippines is a perfect place for two-wheeled travel. The fat-tyred bike is a great way to explore remote areas where few vehicles go. There are endless routes available, on roads and on trails, from easy day rides to grueling week-long mountain adventures. Biking is a rapidly growing sport here: clubs of dedicated mountain bikers are springing up in many popular areas, and competitions are common. The local bikers are friendly and accommodating, and always willing to share information and rides along their favorite routes.

Explore challenging biking trails in:

* Baguio City, Benguet
* Boracay, Aklan
* Davao
* Iloilo
* Sagada, Mountain Province
* The Cordillera
* Banaue, Ifugao
* Cagayan de Oro City, Misamis Oriental
* Guimaras
* Mt.Apo, Davao Del Sur
* Samal Island, Davao Del Sur

Sea Kayaking

Sea kayaking is a new sport in the Philippines, but with 7,107 islands offering every conceivable variety of tropical seascape, it is one that is sure to expand quickly. The islands offer thousands of kilometers of superb paddling on crystal-clear water, taking in exotic villages, pristine beaches, coral reefs, and mangrove swamps along the way. The kayak, silent and unobtrusive, is the perfect way to explore these delicate ecosystems without disturbing wildlife or the peace of nature. For those seeking more extreme hills, the rugged east coast provides monster waves and fine rough-water kayaking.

Sea Kayaking Destinations:

* Caramoan Islands, Camarines Sur
* Samar
* Palawan
* Siargao

Surfing

The Philippines offers surf for all levels. La Union on the northwest coast of Luzon, four hours north of Manila, is easy to get to, has good accommodation and food, and offers gentle beach breaks perfect for beginners. Baler and Infanta in Quezon, and Daet in Camarines Norte offer a more adventurous experience, with longer travel and bigger waves. For surfers seeking the extreme edge, the wild east coast is the place to be.

Surfers' Paradise Found Here:

* Baler, Quezon
* Samar
* Infanta, Quezon
* Daet, Camarines Norte
* Catanduanes
* Siargao
* Tandag, Surigao del Sur

Dive

The Philippines is a scuba diver's dream come true. The warm waters surrounding the Philippines 7,107 islands present an underwater wildlife extravaganza, so spectacular that divers return for an average of 10 trips each.

Dive into crystal clear waters underwater visibility of up to 60 meters, discover shipwrecks, cliffs covered with sponges, colorful corals, gorgonians, turtles, sharks, rays, and even the very rarely seen exotic fishes like Spanish Dancer, harlequin ghost-pipefish, camouflaged frogfish and fire gobies. Thanks to the convergence of the nutrient rich waters of the Pacific Ocean, South China Sea and Celebes Sea, you will be a spectator to an aquatic symphony of over 2,000 species of marine fish as well as more than 400 out of the 500 known coral species in the world.

Top Dive Destinations:

* Puerto Galera, Oriental Mindoro
* Anilao, Batangas
* Cabilao Island, Bohol
* Balicasag Island, Bohol
* Apo Island, Negros Oriental
* Malapascua Island, Cebu
* Tubbataha Reef National Park, Palawan
* Sarangani Bay
* Mactan Island, Cebu

Going to the Beach

The Philippines is Asia's Beach Capital

With 7,107 islands, and a coastline twice the length of that of the United States, the Philippines can claim to be Asia's Beach Capital. Enjoy the warm crystal blue waters of both the China Sea and the Pacific Ocean. Mention the Philippines and images of long, white sand beaches and bodies of water blessed with a variety of marine life come to mind.

Top Beaches in the Philippines:

Boracay, Aklan
Pagudpud, Ilocos Norte
Mactan Island, Cebu
Panglao, Bohol
Camiguin
Camiguin, which rhymes with "come again," has been regarded as the most beautiful island in the country. As such, it is also referred to as the Philippines' "Garden of Eden." The presence of a number of majestic waterfalls that create both hot and cold springs is only one of the many attractions of this island-paradise. The topography is unmistakably tropical but the ambience is uniquely occidental. A study in contrast, Camiguin is sure to mesmerize anyone who visits with the itch to be back again soon.
Honda Bay, Palawan
El Nido, Palawan
Pearl Farm, Davao
Pearl Farm is located in the Samal Island off the coast of Davao City, Southern Philippines. The premier beach resort, which lies in the pristine island of Samal, used to be a pearl farm. There thousands of white-lipped oysters, transported form the Sulu Sea, were once cultivated for their pink, white, and gold pearls. Today, beach lovers all over the world visit this world-class beach resort for its white sand and panoramic landscape and seascape, bringing with them the memory of a lifetime — a relaxing private retreat in a tropical paradise.
Siargao
Siargao, located in the province of Surigao del Norte, is renowned for its curling waves that soar from nine to twelve feet high. It is frequented by surfers from all over the world. Besides surfing, the island of Siargao is well-known for its unspoiled beaches and its rural charm.

ALI starts construction of nationwide boutique hotel chain (http://www.mb.com.ph/articles/287534/ali-starts-construction-nationwide-boutique-hotel-chain)
By JAMES A. LOYOLA
November 14, 2010, 12:03pm
MANILA, Philippines – Ayala Land, Inc. (ALI) recently broke ground for its new boutique hotel in Bonifacio Global City – the first in a chain that will soon include Alabang, Quezon City, Davao and Cagayan de Oro.

Certain design features will be carried in each property in line with its brand identity. The boutique hotels are considered essential elements of Ayala Land’s self-contained mixed-use business centers.

As in other Ayala Land properties, this hotel will adopt sustainable design features and operational best practices.

“We are starting a new wave of accommodations that will offer style, location and comfort at good prices. These hotels are key elements of the work and leisure environment provided by Ayala Land’s mixed-use developments,” said ALI vice president and ALI Capital & Hotels Head Junie Jalandoni.

At the recent groundbreaking rites of the first property at Bonifacio Global City, Jalandoni said this will likely set a trend in the industry.

She said these hotel properties are designed for strategic locations and demographics. “There’s a high demand especially from the younger generation of travelers for accommodations that have great accessibility and unique style,” Jalandoni said.

Expected to be operational in 2012, the first boutique hotel draws on Ayala Land’s track record for creating distinctive properties.

It will be located on 11th street, a main thoroughfare in Bonifacio Global City that also intersects the fashionable retail center Bonifacio High Street. It is a short walk to the shops, restaurants, bars, art works and entertainment centers that make up this retail boulevard defined by a strip of green.

“For business travelers, location is very important. Time is precious to them and they want everything within reach. At the same time, they are exposed to global standards and have developed a certain level of sophistication,” said Jalandoni.

Thus, she said the hotel will be business-friendly, stylish but with a warm social atmosphere. “Our boutique hotel is aimed at both foreign and local business travelers looking for an alternative, unique dwelling in an urban hot spot,” Jalandoni added.

The 180-room hotel, designed by C.T. Onglao and Associates, will have a distinct design, offer local flavor, accessible technology and sharp service’ while giving guests value for their money.

Meanwhile, Ayala Land Premier, the high-end residential unit of Ayala Land Inc., has successfully launched the second of its three tower Park Terraces residential condominium.

According to ALP president Bobby Dy, ALP sold 30 percent of the units of the second building, called Point Tower, in just 24 hours when it was opened a couple of weeks ago.

Dy said sales in one day reached P1.8 billion for the tower which is expected to cost P4 billion to build. In contrast, Tower 1 was 93 percent sold in just 48 hours after it was launched last January.

ALI president Antonino Aquino noted that ALP projects have seen abnormally high take up this year because of the release of demand that was pent up during the 2008 sub-prime crisis.

He explained that ALP usually launches just one building in two years and launching two a year is unprecedented. It took ALP five years to sell its earlier project, The Residences.

ALI residential buildings head Melissa Gil said Point Tower will start construction next year and will be completed by 2016. She added that they will be launching the third tower by next year.

The Point Tower will follow the same design philosophy as the first tower: Generously-sized units, energy-efficient features, refined finished, and select but special amenities.

However, at the Point Tower units are zoned so that all one bedroom units rise from the fifth floor to the 33rd floor, all two bedroom units from the 34th to the 47th and all 3 bedroom units and penthouse units are at the 48th-59th floors.

The Point Tower’s amenities are select but special. Its Club Floors provide residents a variety of recreational options: Courtyard gardens an interactive play area, a fully equipped fitness center and a swimming pool, an air conditioned lounge, and an open air veranda.

A retail area on the ground floor opens up a world of possibilities for residents as well as with provisions for restaurants, cafés, hair salons, and boutiques.

CEPALCO Powers Progress with Microsoft Solutions (http://www.enterprise.ph/?_s=8&_ss=P&P=3&PN=11279&L=S&II=482&ID=S,482,B3,1-16f)
November 14, 2010

Cagayan Electric Power and Light Company, Inc. (CEPALCO), the third largest electric distribution company in the Philippines, has recently chosen and deployed Microsoft solutions to achieve its business objective of “powering progress” by efficient integration, increasing the productivity of its workforce, and ultimately bringing better services to its customers all over Northern Mindanao.

CEPALCO began its operations in 1952, with a client base of only 750 customers. Today, the company has expanded to cover municipalities outside Cagayan de Oro with over 100,000 customers and continues to strive to build the company, increase manpower and facilities, as well as strengthen its expertise.

To complement this growth, the company searched for a combination of solutions that will facilitate more efficient customer servicing with an integrated IT infrastructure, and CEPALCO found that Microsoft is an ideal fit to address these needs. They appointed dB Wizards, a Microsoft Gold Certified Partner that specializes in providing world-class solutions and services to enable its customers achieve their business objectives, maximize return on their IT investments, and accelerate growth.

“Microsoft is committed to help companies achieve their business objectives and reach their full potential through advanced information technology. Our solutions are designed to cater to different needs and provide cost-efficiency by accelerating the deployment of applications, ensuring that systems are always up to speed and data is within reach,” said Femee Cruz, Information Worker Product Manager, Microsoft Philippines.

dB Wizards proceeded to develop a more efficient IT infrastructure for CEPALCO based on a consolidated Microsoft platform, deploying innovations that addressed the organization’s changing business needs, such as Microsoft SharePoint 2007, Microsoft SQL Server 2008 and Microsoft Windows Server 2008.

“CEPALCO is a forward-looking company held back by a manual process that slowed down operations – a challenge that the company had to overcome in order to better serve their customers,” said Francis Rapadas, Project Manager, CEPALCO project. “With Microsoft’s technologies and the partnership with dB Wizards, CEPALCO was able to streamline their process, get the information they need faster and more reliably, as well as realize the potential of their skilled staff and improve customer relations.”

“CEPALCO is a great example of how companies can make the most out of their IT investment, empower its employees, and deliver good customer service,” Cruz added.

“In an electric utility industry, it is important to have an infrastructure that will support our business needs without spending much to avoid affecting service rates,” said Ligaya P. Estopia, DBA – Information and Communications Technology Services Department, CEPALCO. “Microsoft has enabled us to have faster response times for our customer queries, quicker decision making due to better collaboration between the Manila and Cagayan offices which obviously cut down our costs for travel and transportation.”

Prior to the project, CEPALCO struggled with manual tracking and sharing of hardcopy documents that were mostly stored in filing cabinets. This and network bandwidth issues presented a challenge with regards to sharing files across Manila and Cagayan offices. To address this, CEPALCO built a portal using Microsoft SharePoint, allowing each department to have its own site for the speedy and efficient sharing and retrieving of updates and relevant information. They scanned more than a million documents into the system, helping the company create a centralized archive where employees have access to necessary documents through a network specifically designed for the company.

"Monitoring and coordinating the various sub-processes involved in many Engineering Services Division (ESD) projects can become very tedious and time-consuming if done by manually browsing the submitted hard copies of the reports. With the eDMS, accessing data is fast and accurate which can lead to quick and effective decision-making. The ability of ESD decision makers to make quick and effective decisions results to customer satisfaction and improved revenue of the company," says Engr. Cecilio U. Sumaoy, Senior Manager, Head - System Operations Department of Engineering Services Division and Lead Engineer for CEPALCO Photovoltaic Solar Power Plant and Green Building Project.

Through these innovations, employees are now capable of easier collaboration and sharing of files. CEPALCO now benefits from increased productivity and faster response times to customer queries, while saving a huge amount of time and reducing a considerable amount of cost.

“The deployment of these innovative solutions made us realize how much we can benefit from the right choice of technology. At present, we no longer have to spend days going through several piles of papers and spending on reproduction – the portal allows us to download and share files in just minutes. Consequently, we are now faster and more capable to deliver the best service to our clients,” said Estopia. “We can now truly power progress with the help of Microsoft innovation and believe that we have made the right choice.”

On Lapasan traffic. Di ko ka imagine.:ohno:

Uptown Condotel investment scheme seen to lure investors (http://www.businessweekmindanao.com/2010/08/uptown-condotel-investment-scheme-seen-to-lure-investors.html/comment-page-1#comment-56506)

Editor-in-Chief

UPTOWN Condotel, the newest condotel in Cagayan de Oro, is now nearing completion and is expected to revolutionize the industry due to its unique investment scheme that is intended to lure more investors into the city.

The 3-storey 48-units residential building located at the sprawling Business Park of Xavier Estates in Upper Balulang is being developed by Plumbline Development Corporation, a real estate firm newly-established by a consortium of Hawaian-Filipino businessmen.

Mr. Erwin L. Pepino, Plumbline’s corporate secretary and vice-president for public relations, said they are expecting the construction and furnishing to be finished by December.

“By January next year, we’ll start turning over the units to buyers,” Pepino said.

The concept of a condotel follows that of a condominium and hotel lifestyles. It combines the luxury of a full service hotel with a concept of ownership of commercial condominium units.

But apart from its clean, green and peaceful location, what makes Uptown Condotel unique from the rest is the integration of an investment scheme where an investor or buyer of a unit can enjoy the comforts of modern living and, at the same time, earn additional income.

According to Pepino, there are three ways prospective investors can benefit from the new scheme. First, by buying a unit during the pre-construction phase, the buyer can have the potential of earning exponential income due to price appreciation.

Second, by having their unit rented out like regular hotel rooms, the owner can earn up to 15% per annum as return of investment.

And third, by buying a unit at Uptown Condotel, the buyers are not just investing in a single unit but also buying into a prime real estate property since they will then become part owners of common areas within the vicinity of the building.

Mr. Pepino explained that each investor or buyer shall receive an equal sharing of profits or proceeds of rented units. This means, that the owners of un-rented units shall get the same amount with those whose units were rented out.

“We’re bringing in a cutting-edge business concept that would lure investors into the city,” Mr. Pepino said.

“Our aim is not just to provide a hotel-like home atmosphere to our investors, local and foreign, but also give them prime investment opportunities in Cagayan de Oro’s real estate market,” he said.

Pepino added that since Uptown Condotel is Plumbline’s first property development project, the company is determined to make it the finest in the region.

Each unit is a 45 square meter area, bigger than a suite room and has a luxury hotel services such as 24-hour operator assisted telephone service (no need to apply for your own landline), Cable TV & Free Internet Connectivity, and 24-hour House Keeping (Room Service) on Demand. It also provides a 15 sq.m. exclusive parking for each unit.

All hotel units will have kitchen facilities and each unit’s T&B will be fitted with bathtubs. The standard unit price for the residential unit provides for the suite to be fully furnished. Included in the price are the appliances, fixtures, furniture and linen.

Pinoy rafting in Cagayan De Oro, Philippines

ab81tube | November 17, 2010 | 1 likes, 0 dislikes

My cousins Karen and Isis took us on an awesome rafting experience in Cagayan De Oro, Philippines. Pinoy style rafting consists of going down an inner tube - 4 tied together. We went down a 17km river with 21 wickedly fun rapids. We were like little kids riding down the currents - flipping over 2 times each vessel. lol.

Oro to lower amusement tax to 10 percent

THE City Government of Cagayan de Oro is set to implement a reduction in the amusement taxes paid by all movie houses and other related establishments from 30 percent to 10 percent starting January next year.

Councilor Dante Pajo, chairperson of an ad hoc committee created to study Republic Act 9640, said the reduction is stipulated under the law, which, he claims, should be fully enforced in Cagayan de Oro.

Republic Act 9640 is an act amending Section 140 (A) of Republic Act 7160, or the Local Government Code of 1001.

Section 140 (A) states that the "local government may levy an amusement tax to be collected from the proprietors, lessees or operators of theaters, cinemas, concert halls, circuses, boxing stadium and other places of amusement at a rate of not more than 10 percent of the gross receipts from admission fees."

"In order to alleviate the hardships of the industry, there must be a commensurate lowering of the tax burden being imposed. And it is high time that the city government would fully implement RA 96401 for business establishments to enjoy. The law has already been implemented in some cities," Pajo said.

Pajo earlier made a study on the implementation of the law to some movie houses in the city and other stadium and opera owners.

He said he had already met with business establishments and discussed with them the planned reduction of taxes though formal declaration won't be held until December 2.

Pajo said the bill has been amended for the state to promote and support the development and growth of the theater and local film industries as a medium for the dissemination of aesthetic, cultural and social values for the better understanding and appreciation of the Filipino identity.

He added that theaters and movie houses are the primary media through which the output or artistic creation of the local film industry is exhibited.

However, Pajo claimed that the viability of the theater industry is now under threat due to continuous operational losses due to low patronage and high taxation regime.

"Both theater owners and local movie producers are greatly prejudiced by cheaper home movie alternatives like TV and cable programs as well as by rampant film piracy which turns out inexpensive and untaxed films in CD or DVD formats. This severely undercuts the cost of movie tickets at present," Pajo said.

Currently, he said, the entire movie industry is suffering from the collection of two business taxes, each imposed by the national government, which is 10 percent collected through the Bureau of Internal Revenue, and the rest collected by local government units, amounting to 30 percent of gross receipts.

Pajo said that because of this, establishments pay a hefty 40 percent tax which he said is unjust, oppressive and confiscatory. (Nicole J. Managbanag)
