Mall building seen as IT center
Wednesday, January 12, 2011

CITY councilors are now studying the possibility of endorsing to the Philippine Economic Zone Authority (Peza) through a Presidential proclamation the existing 6,563-square-meter Cybermall building along R.N. Pelaez Boulevard in Barangay Kauswagan to become an Information Technology (IT) center.

During the regular session of the City Council on Tuesday, city councilors unanimously agreed to further study the application of Peza Deputy Director General Tereso Panga for an adaptation of a resolution, which was supported by Vice Mayor Ceasar Ian Acenas, endorsing the project.

The councilors said the endorsement is necessary to make sure that the project will not be jeopardized by some investors since the existing building has already been occupied by some commercial establishments.

However, Councilor Edgar Cabanlas said if the area will be endorsed to PEZA, the existing business establishments will also be declared as Income Tax Holiday, meaning they will enjoy 100 percent exemption from corporate income tax for the next four years, though he lamented that this would be a "lose" to the city government.

"Peza incentives to IT park developers or operator will have a special five percent Tax on Gross Income and exemption from all National and Local taxes, except for the real property tax on land owned by the IT park developer, Value Added Tax Zero Rating of local purchase and exemption from expanded withholding tax," he said.

He warned of the "zero benefit" that the city would get once the project would push through.

However, Acenas said although there are existing commercial establishments in the building's ground floor, once the project is accepted by PEZA, the second floor will be developed for IT firms and the existing commercial buildings will pay the taxes due them.

Earlier, several IT companies expressed their intention of relocating at the Cybermall once it is proclaimed as an IT Center by President Benigno Aquino.

It was learned that a resolution of the City Council is one of the requirements for the Presidential proclamation.

As a Peza-accredited firm, Acenas said companies will not be totally exempted from paying all local taxes.

Councilor Ian Mark Nacaya favored the endorsement as this will attract additional investments and employment to the residents of the city and even in the nearby provinces.

"But it is wrong to say that it will destroy the finances of the city since much bigger returns will be given that is why we can invite investors," Nacaya said.

Legislators agreed to continue their discussion during the next regular session since they will still have to inspect the building before they will endorse it as a PEZA zone. (Nicole J. Managbanag)

WTG Construction and Development Corporation, a Cebu-based construction firm will be setting up a concrete and asphalt batching plant in a six-hectare area in Zone 1 Camarahan, Barangay Pagatpat, Cagayan de Oro City.
Accordingly, the proposed plant will have a rated capacity of 200 cubic meters per day and will occupy about 1,650 square meters out of the six-hectare area. Construction of the plant is set to start anytime this month and is expected to be finished in time for the Chinese New Year in February.
The setting up of this facility is a manifestation of the construction boom in the city.
For record, WTG is a duly registered construction firm by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) and among its notable pr0jects include the flyover in Banilad, Cebu City and another ongoing flyover project in South Road Properties, also in Cebu.
Could this be in preparation for upcoming flyover projects in the city?

Barangay clearance needed for biz permit applications
Wednesday, January 12, 2011

STARTING Wednesday, the City Government is now requiring business establishments to secure a barangay clearance before they can apply for business permits.

During the regular session of the City Council on Tuesday, city councilors unanimously approved an ordinance amending section (b) of the Cagayan de Oro City Revenue Code of 2003, by including barangay clearance as among the requirements in the renewal of existing business permit.

According to Majority floor leader Councilor Ian Mark Nacaya, the additional requirement for renewal of existing business permits, in consonance with Section 152 of the Local Government Code of the Philippines (Republic Act 7160) would also mean additional income to the barangay.

Section 152 of Local Government Code states that no city or municipality may issue any license or permit for any business or activity where such business or activity is located or conducted for such clearance; the Sanguniang Barangay may impose a reasonable fee.

Nacaya said that all business permits will pass through the barangay where their establishments will be located as this will also monitor establishments operating in their area.

He also said that the new application for renewal of mayor's permit will require previous year's mayor permit, original copy of the annual or quarterly tax payments, original copies of all receipts showing payments of all regulatory fess as provided by the city government code, certificate of tax exemption and the barangay clearance. Pepsi-Cola set to build 2 biomass facilities
By MYRNA M. VELASCO
January 14, 2011, 2:30am
Manila Bulletin

MANILA, Philippines – A three-way goal intersecting on electricity cost reduction, addressing power supply quality, and abating climate change risks has prompted Pepsi-Cola Products Philippines Inc. to construct its own biomass facilities, two of which are targeted for commissioning simultaneously around May or June this year.

The first two projects, according to PCPPI Commercial Director Gabby Gabinete, which will service the electricity needs of the soda company are sited in Rosario, La Union in Luzon and Cagayan de Oro in Mindanao.

“The project is expected to significantly reduce the company’s energy costs, address the power shortage in the country and increasing cost of fuel, and at the same time, promote a carbon emission-free business environment,” the company has noted further in a statement.

The La Union facility, he said, would be able to yield 1.0-megawatt capacity for the company’s use and it commands an investment of $1.4 million.

For the technology being deployed at the facilities, Gabinete noted that they have tapped Indian firm Thermax as systems integrator to ensure that these are all-set for installation once they are shipped into the country.

On the carbon emissions concern which is also being thrown against biomass facilities, Gabinete noted that toxic gases being spewed from biomass facilities are of considerably less amount as compared to oil-fired power plants.

Nevertheless, he stressed that technical studies are currently being undertaken on how to capture the carbon dioxide emissions from their biomass facilities, especially with the proposed use of rice hull as a fuel. The other preferences would be wood chips and other proven and prospective biomass fuel inputs.

Pepsi-Cola said the project is being undertaken with local firm Solutions for Renewable Energy, Inc. (SURE) under a build-operate-transfer agreement.

In a recent visit at the facility’s site, US Ambassador to the Philippines Harry Thomas recognized the value-creating potential of the facility on “additional revenue stream to the agricultural sector undertaking a renewable energy project in Northern Luzon.”

City Hall workers to get 12.5 pay raise
Friday, January 14, 2011

MORE than 3,000 Cagayan de Oro City Hall workers can expect a 12.5 percent salary adjustment starting this month.

The increase covers only regular employees of the City Government.

The City Council on Tuesday approved on third and final reading the 2011 budget for personnel services in which the salary increase for City Government employees was incorporated.

City Councilor Simeon Licayan, chair of the committee on finance, ways and means, said City Hall employees expect the second tranche of the mandated salary increase on the January 15 payday.

He said that based on the Department of Budget Management (DBM) Local Budget Circular 95, dated June 29, 2010, salaries of City Hall employees undergo a 50 percent adjustment in four years.

The first salary adjustment was implemented last year and the third adjustment is due in 2012 until, the fourth adjustment takes effect in 2013.

Licayan said the City Government cannot institute an abrupt adjustment amounting to 50 percent since the city draws its fund for personnel services out the city's projected annual income.

This year, the City Government has appropriated P34.4 million for personal services of its P560-million general public services 2011 annual budget.

According to Councilor Alexander Dacer, chair of the labor committee, the incumbent always see to it that the welfare of its employees is always of utmost priority.

Barangays asked to submit list of policemen
Friday, January 14, 2011

CAGAYAN de Oro City Councilor Ramon Tabor recently reminded all heads of the city's 80 barangays to submit an updated list of their respective pools of village police for 2011.

Tabor, chair of the committee on barangay police development, said every rural barangay must form 20 in every team while the urban areas can form as much as 25 barangay police depending on the size of their areas of responsibility or the size of their barangay.

The restructured committee has pending policies that will also strengthen the safeguarding of peace and order in their respective barangays and above all to give dignity to every barangay police.

Tabor explained that the village police are the basic component of the barangay. As guardians of peace and harmony, they must be given proper training on investigation, intelligence gathering through the National Bureau of Investigation, and rescue from Coast Guard in time for calamity in their respective barangays.

He said the most important factor for every barangay police is to equip them with proper uniform and gears for them to be dignified and gain respect.

The committee, Tabor said, will be studying the clustering of barangays under a police precinct as well as considering the need for more precincts.

"In order to solve petty crimes in the barangay such as vandalism, nuisance, and riots, all the Barangay Police must establish accurate time so all of them will roam around simultaneously," Tabor added.

Tabor also announced the allocation of funds for barangay police aside from the monthly honorarium that the barangay pays them. However, Tabor did specify the exact amount of funds allocated for the purposed.

Aside from additional honorarium, the City Government also plans to provide barangay police insurance since they [barangay police] are prone to danger.

"As we all know, barangay police before are on voluntary basis. They were not given any benefits, but just a little honorarium, not enough for their family. Some benefits must be accorded to them as they are the ones keeping the peace and order in our barangay," Tabor said. (NJM)

Sia eyes buses to ease traffic problem

Cagayan de Oro City Councilor Juan Sia is proposing the immediate shift from public utility jeeneys (PUJs) to buses, if only to ease the worsening traffic situation in the locality.

He said it would take 50 or more PUJs to transport every 1,000 passengers, contrary to only 15 units of 60-seater buses.

He cited his personal experience in China, Hongkong and other countries where traffic is not much of a problem, with the absence of PUJs.

“We can expect a smoother traffic situation in the city once we shift to buses because aside from a reduced number of public conveyances plying our roads, bus drivers are proven to be more adherent to traffic rules and regulations compared to most PUJ drivers, ” Sia stated.

He added that aside from the excessive number of PUJs now plying the city roads, the ‘insufficiently-educated’ traffic enforcers are also contributory to the problem.
“I hope to draw public support for this, amid possible opposition from PUJ operators, who are gravely influential,” Sia concluded.

With the increasing demand for the Internet as a means of communication for both business and personal matters, there are now several places in Cagayan de Oro that one can go to get access to the Web. There are establishments that offer such service for free or with charge, depending on whether they are in a public or private location. Usually, Internet access is for free, provided that you, the customer, order food and drinks or avail of their offers.

Within the Divisoria district, one can get Internet access at Bo’s Coffee Club. The coffee shop is located along Velez Street, right across Sentro 1850 restaurant, between Tilt Bar and Inilog Restaurant. Although the Internet is free, there is a charge of Php20 per hour for those who want to use the outlet to charge their laptops.

Brewberry Café and Restaurant, formerly known as Blueberry Café, is famous for being one of the eating places with the best Adobo, according to the “Search for the Ultimate Pinoy Dish” by Soo Pinoy. Situated along Velez and Chavez Streets, Brewberry, apart from offering budget buffets, also offers free Internet access. Unlike Bo’s, the café does not allow laptop users to use their outlets. When one plans to dine, bring their wireless Internet-ready devices and plan to stay there for more than an hour, it is recommended that he has his device fully charged.

In the Limketkai area, there are several WiFi spots there, particularly those bistros in the Rosario Arcade area. Candy’s, Big Flat Bread or BFB, Bourbon St. Bistro, Sunburst, Bo’s Coffee Club, Yellow Cab, Bigby’s Café, Coffeeworks, and other restaurants and cafes within in the Arcade are the ones that offer free Internet access. Generally, one has to ask for the password from the person in charge to access their connection.

I'd like to see Coca Cola do the same...it's a challenge for them while building a new plant in Mis.Or. at the moment.

The so-called Bonne Hotel under construction along Kauswagan Highway is now officially “N Hotel” as stated in the newly-installed tarpaulin at the main entrance of the hotel.

Work is now concentrated on the main gate and frontage. As a background, the area was once the site of SBC Party Venue before it was closed a couple of years back. The new 3-storey hotel will also have function rooms as well as a pool. The new building is designed by ADA Architects. I wasn’t able to take some pictures inside because of the guard on-duty. :)

Anyway, this hotel will soon be open to the public. Additional accommodations, more jobs, more revenues to the city.

Makro Store located along Kauswagan Highway beside RER Subdivision is now closed for renovation.

SM Investments Corp. which is now the majority owner of all Makro stores in the country has announced over a year ago (read news article I posted last May 5, 2009) that they will be converting all Makro stores nationwide into hypermarkets – outlets combining a supermarket and a department store. It was also stated that SM will analyze how things will develop back then after the initial convertion of 3 Makro stores in Metro Manila.

However, the Makro store in Cagayan de Oro is rumored to be converted into another SM Savemore branch, which would be the 3rd in the city after Savemore Market City and Savemore Capistrano. Lets see how things will develop in the coming weeks.

The one on the side could be the elevator shaft.

Next is the commercial building just across D’Morvie Suites Lapasan shown below. Previous update was last October 22, 2010. They have finished the 3rd floor. I just don’t know if there will be another floor but the steel bars are still going up.

Next is some progress on the rumored Willshire Inn branch along Mortola Street at the back of Ororama Supercenter. Still no press release whatsoever but there were workers onsite. My previous update on this was more than a year ago on August 14, 2009. In fact it was the first “Other construction updates” which has now reached its 28th update including this post. Some changes since 2009 include the roof and partition walls.

Construction of Cagayan de Oro’s first high rise building has now progressed significantly with work now on the 3rd-4th floor. About half of the building or the portion fronting Limketkai Avenue is now going up to the fourth level while the rear portion near the skybridge is just about to start the 2nd level.

You can notice the high ceiling of the ground floor, maybe a good location for a ballroom or any other function. You can also notice some work on the skybridge which connects to the East Concourse.

The proposed 18-storey hotel is expected to be completed in 2 years. The Limketkai Group is implementing a masterplan for the 30-hectare complex which they envisioned to be the main business district in the region.

STEAG partners to pursue coal expansion this year‏ (http://www.pna.gov.ph/index.php?idn=0&nid=3&rid=323734)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

MANILA, Jan. 14 (PNA) - To address the growing demand for electricity in Mindanao, STEAG State Power Inc., operator of a 232-megawatt coal plant at the Phividec Industrial Estate in Villanueva, Misamis Oriental, is targeting to start the plant's expansion in the latter part of the year.

STEAG corporate communications officer Jerome Solvedilla said Friday that the STEAG joint venture partners in the coal facility are pushing through with the target of starting construction this year, as announced in 2010.

"The partners are looking at groundbreaking for the expansion this year, towards the end of the year most likely," Soldevilla said.

Aboitiz Power Corp., Evonik Steag GmbH of Essen, Germany, La Filipina Uy Gongco Corp., partners in the Phividec coal plant, announced last year that they plan to construct a third unit with a capacity of 150 MW adjacent to the existing facility.

A new corporation will be formed for the expansion and the partners agreed to maintain their shareholdings similar to that in STEAG. Evonik will own 51 percent, La Filipina with 15 percent and APC, 34 percent.

The expansion is expected to be completed in 2013.

APC president and CEO Erramon Aboitiz said earlier Mindanao requires more stable baseload capacity and needs to diversify its generation sources to be less dependent on hydroelectric plants.

Mindanao was beset with eight-hour brownouts during the summer season last year due to El Nino weather phenomenon which affected the plant's hydro facilities.

Hydro plants supply more than 50 percent of the region's power needs.

"This addition to STEAG State Power is the logical way to achieve this. This project assures Mindanao of reliable and cost-effective power to fuel its continued economic advancement," Aboitiz said.

The expansion will share certain essential facilities, such as the jetty, coal handling facilities and stockyards and the 138-KV interconnection with the Mindanao grid to reduce project risk and lower investment cost.

Electricity from the expansion will be sold to interested utilities or industries in the form of long-term power sales agreements whereas STEAG State sells its currently offtake to the National Power Corporation.

"Depending on the interest the market demonstrates, the agreement contemplates the possibility of another unit," Aboitiz Power said earlier.

Aboitiz Power and its partners did not disclose the project cost for the 150 MW expansion but construction cost of coal plants is estimated at around $ 1.5 million to $ 2 million per MW.

Aboitiz Power is the holding company for the Aboitiz Group’s investments in power generation, distribution, retail and power services.

Evonik Steag GmbH is Germany’s fifth largest power generator while La Filipina Uygongco is a local company. (PNA)

Cagayan De Oro City Hall puts up satellite collection centers to speed up biz permit renewal, tax payments

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY, Jan. 14 (PIA) --In an effort to give convenience to the taxpaying public, the City Treasurer’s Office has established offsite collection centers to accept tax payments even as the city’s Business One-Stop Shop (BOSS) at City Hall extends its operations on Saturdays and Sundays to process business permits renewal and new applications.

Cagayan de Oro city Treasurer Lino D. Daral said the offsite collection centers are set up inside the four major commercial establishments in the city, namely- SM City Cagayan de Oro, Lim Ket Kai Mall, Gaisano Mall and Ororama Superstore-Cogon.

Daral stressed that the establishment of the four offsite collection centers hopes to unload the number of business permit licensing transactions being processed at the newly-renovated one-stop center at City Hall.

As expected, thousands of applicants trooped to City Hall when the business permit renewal period started on January 5, 2011. The deadline is set on the midnight of January 20, 2011.

To accommodate more clients, the Business One-Stop Shop extends its operations up to 7:00 o’clock in the evening during regular working days until January 19, 2011.

The Business One-Stop Shop at City Hall also opens to the transacting public on Saturday, January 15 and Sunday, January 16, from 8:00 in the morning until 5:00 in the afternoon.

As the deadline of the business permit renewal period draws nearer, Daral is calling on all taxpayers to file their applications as early as they can in order to avoid the rush in beating the deadline.

Even as he appealed for prompt filing of business permit registration, the City Treasurer also reminded the local taxpayers that penalties will be imposed against late filers. (City Information Office/PIA 10)

Her friends and neighbor customers found the pastries so delicious and a distinctive unique taste of the product was noticed by their gourmet taste. It was ‘A Taste of Heaven on Earth’ they say.

Malaybalay farmers get subsidy on seeds, fertilizer from city government
http://www.bworldonline.com/content.php?title=Malaybalay%20farmers%20get%20subsidy%20on%20seeds,%20fertilizer%20from%20city%20government&id=24515
CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY -- Farmers in Malaybalay City in Bukidnon can now avail of certified rice seeds at a fraction of the regular market price. This came about after the city’s government decided to subsidize this year farmers’ acquisition of certified rice seeds under the Rapid Seeds Supply Financing Project under the Department of Agriculture (DA) through the National Food Authority.
A P1,200 bag of certified seeds is now P600 from the 50% subsidy from the DA. This is subsidized further by P300 by the city government putting the buying price from authorized dealers at P300 a bag. However, only 2,844 bags for roughly the same number of farmers as beneficiaries are available through this scheme.

Unlike regular palay seeds, certified seeds are produced from sources accredited by the government. These seeds are of high quality and are expected to produce more than the normal palay seeds.

Aside from the seeds, the Malaybalay city government also included in its financial subsidy program microbial fertilizers. From P240 per bag, cost has gone down by half to P120.

Andrew T. Bergado, city agriculture officer, said the subsidy program is expected to boost rice crop yield in the city.

Mayor Ignacio W. Zubiri has been encouraging farmers who rely on rainfall for their cropping to avail of certified seeds now so they can start planting ahead of the usual cropping cycle, which is in the second quarter.

Malaybalay City produces roughly 30,000 metric tons of palay annually, from close to 10,000 hectares of rice farms. The city shares at least 10% of Bukidnon’s total rice production, which comprises up to 60% of Northern Mindanao’s rice output. -- Louise G. Dumas

Aboitiz Power is the holding company for the Aboitiz Group’s investments in power generation, distribution, retail and power services.

Evonik Steag GmbH is Germany’s fifth largest power generator while La Filipina Uygongco is a local company. (PNA)

Latest update on the 3rd Bridge Access Road (Igpit-Bayabas Section) shows that the Iponan bridge component has been completed. As shown in the pictures, workers are seen laying out preparations for the bridge approach on the Bulua side.

Below are more photos of the 3rd Iponan Bridge.

A 2-lane concrete road has been completed connecting to the Bulua approach as shown below. This highway will have 4 lanes but as usual, DPWH gives out funds for just the 2 lanes.

From the bridge approach, this road leads to the Bulua Bus Terminal Complex as shown below. Some portions of the road upon approaching Montecarlo Fish Landing are still being cemented.

Photo below shows the junction of the new highway and Bulua Barangay Road. If you turn left or northward, this road will take you the famous stoneware pottery. Along the side is the billboard which states the name of the contractor and the target date of completion which is March 2011. However, history states that the deadline isn’t always followed because the contractor can still hold the construction if the DPWH can’t remit their billings. This project costs Php 334 million more or less.

Now going over to the Bulua Terminal side, the building below at the Montecarlo Fish Landing Complex has been vacated already and could be demolished anytime soon.

http://cagayandeorodev.files.wordpress.com/2011/01/img_7373.jpg?w=468&h=351

Below is the north side of the Bulua Terminal Complex which will connect to the road under construction. Going further east is the newly concreted road leading to Barangay Bayabas.

http://cagayandeorodev.files.wordpress.com/2011/01/img_7363.jpg?w=468&h=351

Meanwhile, this is the intersection at the National Highway in Igpit, Opol. The large billboard will have to be removed. Again, 2 lanes have been concreted already.

http://cagayandeorodev.files.wordpress.com/2011/01/img_7625.jpg?w=468&h=351

http://cagayandeorodev.files.wordpress.com/2011/01/img_7624.jpg?w=468&h=351

http://cagayandeorodev.files.wordpress.com/2011/01/img_7622.jpg?w=468&h=351

Photos below show the road from Barra and the approach to the bridge. A long section have already been cemented. Still, more work is to be done. The end point of this is the large billboard along the highway posted above.

http://cagayandeorodev.files.wordpress.com/2011/01/img_7621.jpg?w=468&h=351

http://cagayandeorodev.files.wordpress.com/2011/01/img_7620.jpg?w=468&h=351

http://cagayandeorodev.files.wordpress.com/2011/01/img_7617.jpg?w=468&h=351

I could see future development on the roadside properties once this new highway will be operational.

HB 3107 provides construction of trans Mindanao superhighway
Saturday, 08 January 2011 00:00
Written by Gold Star Daily

Three Mindanao representatives has joined hands in sponsoring HB 3107 that will soon provide for the construction of a trans Mindanao superhighway connecting the four provincial capitals in the Caraga and the Northern Mindanao regions to the Laguindingan International Airport.

HB-3107 is introduced by Representatives Rufus B Rodriguez of the second district of Cagayan de Oro, Maximo B. Rodriguez, Jr. of the Partylist Abante Mindanao and Philip A. Pichay. The three representatives claim that Mindanao is known as the "Land of Promise" but for it to fulfill all its promises, it has to be fully developed. One step to achieving this development is to link all the provinces in the island.

At present, Agusan Sur and Surigao del Sur are isolated from Western Mindanao due to absence of a East to West Highway. Also, a highway would allow the people from the Caraga Region access to the Laguindingan Airport, with the travel time of four hours from Tandag to the said airport. Given that scenario, people from Caraga would no longer have to travel to Cebu or Manila to have access to airports for their travels within and outside the Philippines.

Once this HB-3107 be approved, The Department of Public Works and Highways shall construct a 240 Kilometers Trans Mindanao superhighway connecting Tandag in Surigao del Sur to the Laguindingan International Airport. This highway would pass thru Prosperidad in Agusan del Sur, Malaybalay and Talakag in Bukidnon which will connect with the Talakag-Barangay Dansolihon highway and the Barangay Dansolihon-Barangay San Simon-Laguindingan Airport highway.

If Laguindingan Airport is just meant to be a domestic airport with international standards, do you think it's practical for these lawmakers to come up with a bill creating a trans superhighway connecting CARAGA region to Laguindingan Airport considering the fact that CARAGA already has two domestic airports? Or is it really because Laguindingan Airport is destined to be an international airport serving Northern Mindanao, CARAGA, and the rest of the neighboring provinces and regions?

when you said income, were you referring to GDP? I've read somewhere that at an average(Philippines), consumer spending accounts for 92-95% of the GDP. Part of the remaining percentage could be attributed to the production output of different industries. Same rates goes for the regional level (northern mindanao). Does it make sense? :)

Living here in the Philippines, a lot of us may have wondered what it would be like to have all four seasons. You’ll have to admit however, that although everyone in this tropical country would like to see and touch real snow, more people are enthralled with the fresh beauty of autumn.

There is one place here in CDO where you can get the closest experience of autumn-in-a-park amidst the unpredictable weather: the Vicente de Lara Park (Capitol Park) in the Capitol Grounds.

Before and Now

Since the beginning of 2010, major developments have been done on the park. Its pathways used to be simple dirt paths lined with short metal fences that could be quite muddy on rainy days. In March 2010, the centerpiece of the park, a giant monument of The Heritage of Misamis Oriental (by Ed Castrillo), was inaugurated. It also signified the start of the landscaping and developments in the entire park.

Ayala, Anflo to build new hotel in Davao

A NEW boutique hotel in Davao City that is likely to redefine the hospitality industry in this booming metropolis was recently launched through ground-breaking ceremonies.

The hotel will be developed through a joint venture between Ayala Hotels and Resorts Corporation (AHRC), an Ayala Land subsidiary, and Anflo Management and Investment Corporation (Anflocor), a leading Mindanao conglomerate.

Greet your friends and families this Sinulog season. Sun.Star covers Sinulog 2011 live!

The new hotel, which aims to provide travelers a cozy but stylish setting, is part of a vibrant, 10-hectare mixed-use development that includes a mall, an office facility designed for business process outsourcing firms and traditional offices, and subsequently a residential tower.

According to Eileen Escobido, project development manager of the hotel, easy accessibility to restaurants and shops, offices and residences of the Ayala Land-developed Abreeza complex located in the city's economic hub will be one of the new hotel's main attractions.

In addition to a great location, the hotel property to be completed in mid-2012 will also be distinguished by its unique contemporary look.

The nine-storey, 148-room project will be designed by C.T. Onglao and Associates, and will highlight local flavor and efficient service.

At the ground breaking of the new hotel, Alex Valoria, Anflocor's president and CEO, mentioned that visitor arrivals in Davao City, which is a center of trade and industry in Southern Mindanao, have been steadily growing. Moreover, a number of BPO firms are scheduled to begin operations in the metropolis which is on top of the Business Processing Association of the Philippines' "Next Wave" cities list for the continuously expanding BPO sector.

"Like Metro Manila and Cebu, Davao needs more hotels to serve the increasing number of tourists and business travelers. We wish to support the city's growth by providing visitors key amenities such as hotels that provide the quality they seek at the price level they most appreciate," he said.

Escobido said the new establishment will cater to a growing market of travelers that are exposed to global standards but at the same time want the best values.

"We're realizing that more travelers put a great premium on accessibility, style and getting their money's worth," she noted.

The new hotel is the second in a series of hotel properties in key cities of the Philippines, which will be operated by an Ayala Land subsidiary.

The first boutique hotel that broke ground will rise in Bonifacio Global City in Metro Manila, also in 2012, and will be a short stroll to the shops, restaurants, bars, and entertainment centers of the fashionable Bonifacio High Street retail strip. Other hotel projects are slated to rise in Cagayan de Oro, Alabang and Quezon City.

All of which will highlight the great convenience of being within a single location that blends together world-class accommodations, a dynamic and vibrant mall, highly-efficient offices and secure residential enclaves.

Abreeza's residential tower is set to break ground by mid-2011. It will offer studios, one- and two-bedroom condominiums.

Junie Jalandoni, vice president and group head of AHRC, said "the Abreeza complex, which will be complemented by this new hotel, will draw from the successes of Ayala Center, the Cebu Business Park and other self-contained Ayala Land developments that provide those who reside and work there a harmonious live-work-play environment."

Envisioned as a home away from home for the stylish, the new boutique hotel will be set apart by well-designed rooms, ample meeting facilities, distinct communal spaces, a business corner, gym and swimming pool.

The entire Abreeza development is a project of Accendo Commercial Corp., a joint venture between Ayala Land, Inc. and the Anflocor Group.

Jalandoni said that the two parties enjoy a special synergy. "Our projects draw from the long experience of Ayala Land in real estate development and from Anflocor Group's intimate knowledge of Mindanao markets."

Jalandoni further stated: "Through this project in Davao City, we hope to offer a new alternative to travelers that puts together style, location, comfort and good prices in one package."

Tap renewable energy to avert power crisis - Angara

MANILA, Jan. 17 (COMSTE/PIA) -- Senator Edgardo J. Angara said that the government should prioritize the swift development and implementation of renewable energy (RE) systems in order to avert a looming power crisis.

The Department of Energy (DOE) recently announced that it is seeking alternative sources to deal with projected power shortages in Luzon and Mindanao.

Angara, Chair of the Congressional Commission on Science Technology and Engineering (COMSTE) said that the RE potential of the country remains largely untapped.

COMSTE reports show that recent studies by the Manila Observatory (MO) have indicated that Mindanao will be drier in the years to come lessening the effectiveness of RE sources like Hydropower, which supplies 70% of the power to the island.

Angara stated that the government should look into alternative ways to develop power sources, specifically through Public Private Partnerships (PPP's). He said that the Cagayan Electric Power and Light Co., Inc. (Cepalco), which already has a 1MW solar plant in Cagayan de Oro, is looking to expand their existing capacity to 4MW in two years.

Angara also said that the growth of the local solar industry will benefit from the first solar testing facility of the Philippines opened recently at the First Philippine Industrial Park in Tanauan, Batangas.

The Facility will test and determine the best engineering options for solar Photovoltaic (PV) deployment in the Philippines. The facility will be testing state of the art arrays and electronics parts (inverters, battery systems, fuel cells, etc). Solar research would also involve collaboration with the Semiconductor and Electronics Industries in the Philippines, Inc. (SEIPI).

The test facility would ideally be a, "clearinghouse of engineering information on price, performance, reliability of state of the art Photovoltaic (PV) components," noted Angara.

Angara said that the solar testing facility marks the beginning of the Renewable Energy Research and Development Institute (RERDI), which is set to promote innovation and expand the Renewable Energy industry of the country.

According to the Department of Energy, the Philippines Energy Mix, solar, wind, and micro-hydro power accounts for less than 1% of the mix, which is dominated by imported oil at 34%. (COMSTE)

RTMI Yacapin aims to be No. 1 again
By Joe del Puerto Felicilda, Editorial Consultant
Post Published: 17 January 2011
Author: BWM

The countdown starts at Rural Transit Mindanao, Incorporated (RTMI) Yacapin Branch, as it aims to become No. 1 again in passenger satisfaction and revenue generation.

This, after the said branch failed to meet management expectations for the past three years, or so.

RTMI belongs to the giant Yanson Group of Bus Companies (YGBC) that also operates Ceres Liner, Incorporated (CLI) in the Visayas; Bachelor Express, Incorporated (BEI) in the eastern half of Mindanao and Ceres Transport Corporation (CTC) in Metro Manila-Batangas route.

Newsly-installed Branch Manager Diosdado Bravo has set the timeline of January to June this year to resurrect the branch’s ‘Yacapin Rules’ stature.

“This may sound crucial, but with everyone of us working hands-in-glove, we will surely see this branch on top again, among the 11 YGBC branches, nationwide ,” Mr. Bravo told his colleagues during the branch’s Christmas fellowship last December.

Mr. Bravo served as branch manager of BEI Butuan for about three years before his transfer to RTMI Yacapin, first week of December last year.

Under his watch, BEI Butuan consistently recorded the highest performance rating in passenger satisfaction and income generation, lowest in the number of accidents and indirect cost per kilometer all over the YGBC structure.

“Such a significant event in the life of BEI-Butuan was not to my own credit alone. It was the unity and commitment of all of us there that severally made the said branch No. 1 ,” Mr. Bravo stressed. He wished the same thing is going to happen at RTMI Yacapin.

Very soon upon taking over Yacapin, he systematized the deployment of bus units within the service area even as he enhanced the strength of line personnel, so as to regain the trust and confidence of the riding public.

The branch covers the cities Cagayan de Oro, Malaybalay, Valencia, Davao, Tacurong and the other parts of Bukidnon, Lanao del Sur, North, North Cotabato and Sultan Kudarat.

“Let’s all strive and work together to reach the goal and eventually share all the glory of being No. 1again,” Mr. Bravo further challenged his colleagues.

PPA to privatize CDO port before 2015

The Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) will privatize the Port of Cagayan de Oro and four other major ports in the next five years, starting this year.

The other four were identified as the ports of Davao, General Santos, Zamboanga and Iloilo.

“We intend to privatize and modernize at least one of this port yearly starting next year and within the next five years. PPA will pursue the full modernization of the Ports of Davao, Cagayan de Oro, General Santos, Zamboanga and Iloilo, while at the same time, attend to the development of smaller but strategic ports in various parts of the country,” PPA general manager Juan Sta. Ana said.

Cargoes handled in Mindanao area includes products such as bananas, pineapples, tuna, agricultural, marine, and other perishable products. They handle bulk of the passengers as well.

Cagayan de Oro has an average of 3.3 mmt cargo volume annually

PPA has allocated capital expenditures for the privatization program.

“We will continue to give priority to the private sector financing channeled through such program considering the enormity of resource requirements to be able to adequately meet the urgent need for the development and delivery of services of these major ports,” Sta. Ana said.

PPA invested a total of P23.915 billion in the last 8 years or about P2.989 billion yearly for the port development.

As of the end September, 33 major infrastructure projects with an estimated cost of P1.53 billion were completed.

I could see future development on the roadside properties once this new highway will be operational.

Aboitiz begins Steag expansion this year (http://www.businessweekmindanao.com/2011/01/aboitiz-begins-steag-expansion-this-year.html)

By NELSON V. CONSTANTINO, Editor-in-Chief

THE expansion of STEAG State Power Inc.’s power plant at the Phividec Industrial Estate in Villanueva, Misamis Oriental pushes through this year and is expected to generate an additional capacity of 150 MW to augment its existing 210 MW facility.

In a press statement, Aboitiz Power Corp. (APC) and its partners said they will proceed as planned with their expansion program for STEAG State Power Inc.’s power plant in northern Mindanao.

The expansion plan, which analysts estimate will reach $600 million, involves adding new capacity to the 232 megawatt coal plant at the Phividec Industrial Estate in Villanueva, Misamis Oriental.

The target of the STEAG consortium is to complete a third power facility next to the existing power plants by 2013.

Jerome R. Solvedilla, spokesman for Steag State Power, Inc., said plant owners were planning to hold groundbreaking ceremonies “towards the end of the year.” The firm is a joint venture among Aboitiz Power Corp., Evonik Steag GmbH, and La Filipina Uy Gongco Corp.

The expansion plan is likely to be carried out within the last quarter of 2011.

“There is a need to put up new capacities in Mindanao and the province should be less dependent on hydroelectric plants,” APC president and CEO Erramon Aboitiz, earlier said.
Last year, Mindanao experienced up to 8-hour brownouts daily as the El Niño weather phenomenon dried up major bodies of water that provide power to hydro facilities.

Hydroelectric plants supply more than 50% of Mindanao’s power needs.

“This addition to STEAG State Power is the logical way to achieve this. This project assures Mindanao of reliable and cost-effective power to fuel its continued economic advancement,” Aboitiz said.

The power to be generated from this proposed power plant will be sold to interested utilities or industries.

Aside from APC, the other members of the STEAG group are: Evonik Steag GmbH of Essen, Germany and La Filipina Uy Gongco Corp.

APC is the holding company for the Aboitiz Group’s investments in power generation, distribution, retail and power services. It is a major producer of renewable energy in the country with several hydroelectric and geothermal assets in its generation portfolio.

Evonik Steag GmbH is Germany ‘s fifth largest power generator while La Filipina Uygongco is a local company.

The group earlier said they are looking at expanding the capacity of the coal-fired facility by 150 megawatt (MW). This will call for the construction of a third unit next to the existing Steag power plants.

Under the proposed expansion plan, the group will create a new company for the third facility. The partners have agreed to maintain their shareholdings in the same proportions: 51% for Evonik, 15% for La Filipina and 34% for APC.

Cdeo Nets P50.4m In Tax Payments As Of Jan. 13 (http://www.cagayandeoro.gov.ph/?page=news&id=1976)
by Ian A. Fuentes- City Information Office

The Business One-Stop Shop (BOSS) of Cagayan de Oro City collected P50,438,468 million in tax payments as of January 13, 2011 last week, noting an increase of 19.8 percent as compared to the same period last year, City Treasurer Lino D. Daral said.

In his business tax collection summary report, Daral expressed gladness that the tax payments during the period are more than P10 million over same period in 2010. Retailers topped the collection list with P14,681,751 million followed by service establishments with P4,733,800 million and manufacturing with P4,205,016 million. Rounding up the top 10 categories include tax collections from banks, P3,519,943 million; tax on real estate lessors, estate dealers, P3,176,216 million; wholesalers, dealers, distributors, P2,760,846 million; Mayor’s permit fee, P2,589,560 million; garbage fee, P2,357,850 million; certification fee, P2,149,349 million and occupation permit fee, P1,548,760 million. The City Treasurer expects the city’s tax collection to zoom up as the deadline in the annual renewal of business permit registration draws near on the midnight of January 20, 2011. As thousands of applicants rush to beat the deadline to avoid penalty, the City Treasurer’s Office established offsite collection centers in SM City Cagayan de Oro, Lim Ket Kai Mall, Gaisano Mall and Ororama Superstore-Cogon to accept tax payments and business permit applications. Aside from the establishment of satellite collections centers, the Business One-Stop Shop at City Hall extended its operations up to 7:00 o’clock in the evening during regular working days until January 19, 2011 in order to accommodate more taxpayers and clients. With the extension of its operations until nighttime, the City Treasurer urged all taxpayers to avoid the rush in filing their business permit applications by transacting earlier at the BOSS and offsite collection centers before deadline. As mandated by law, appropriate penalties would be imposed against late filers, Daral reminded. (Ian A. Fuentes/CIO)

Councilor Sia is really proposing the shift of PUJs to buses. maybe this could solve the traffic problem in the city. this way, the LGU will think of widening the road in cdeo

In Sydney, buses are operated by private and public. The state owned buses are NOT free, i.e. passengers still have to pay the same as the privately owned buses...we should do the same.

How about the city of CDO acquire/invest a few buses, get rid of the CBD PUJs, and replace it with buses?

Ticketing will be electronic so no cash is on the hands of the bus driver/conductor. Bus tickets can be purchase from any pharmacy, gov't offices, grocery store, etc.

PUJs will only be available say in East, West, and South bound terminals for the outer barangays/destinations.

Get rid of MOTORELA as well.

AND the most important is GET RID OF SIKAD.

When I was a student, I walk almost every day from MPSC to Licoan. People don't do that anymore because they are spoiled with Sikad.

People are so lazy to walk from end-to-end of DVsoria which is a very short distance to me. People instead catch a motorela/sikad to travel that distance.

Cagayan de Oro is the home of a host of companies and educational institutions. Here, it’s not surprising to find transient laborers, itinerant workers and students originally from different provinces. For this reason, entrepreneurs have built an entire industry around rental accommodation. Rooms for rent, boarding houses, dormitories and bedspaces can be found in just about every corner of the city.

Boarding houses and room rentals are inexpensive choices compared to hotels, pension houses and apartments. They’re also a smart option if you want to live alone or have to send funds to the folks back home.

If you’re looking for a rental property in Cagayan de Oro, there are things that may hamper your search, one of which is the city itself. Of course, it’s hard to search in an unfamiliar territory. Where would you go if you didn’t have a destination?

There are many things to consider when hunting for a place to stay. Keep this guide in mind and you won’t have to exhaustingly scour Cagayan de Oro like how Frodo traveled barefoot all the way from the Shire to Mordor.

Oro expects P200M revenue collection
Tuesday, January 18, 2011
http://www.sunstar.com.ph/cagayan-de-oro/local-news

THE Cagayan de Oro City government has already collected some P70 million in tax payment as of yesterday morning, 20 percent higher compared to last year's P56 million collected during the same period.

According to Lino Daral, City Treasurer, the city government projects some P180- P200 million tax revenue this year, higher than the P170 million revenue collected last year.

Greet your friends and families this Sinulog season. Sun.Star covers Sinulog 2011 live!

He said the city expects more tax as the rise in the number of business establishments will ultimately bring up this year's tax revenue to exceed last year's P10 million.

Daral emphasized that with the one-stop shop installed at the ground floor of City hall, renewing and processing time of business permit registration is only between 15 and 30 minutes.

"Though there is no exact figure yet, retailers topped the collection last week, followed by service establishments and manufacturing," the city treasurer said.

Renewal of business permit will certainly shoot up as deadline on midnight of January 20, 2011, nears, Daral said.

Anticipating the sudden upsurge of applicants, the city treasurer has established offsite collection centers in SM City Cagayan de Oro, Lim Ket Kai Mall, Gaisano Mall and Ororama Superstore-Cogon to accept tax payments and business permit applications.

Aside from the establishment of satellite collections centers, the Business One-Stop Shop at City Hall extended its operations up to 7 p.m. during regular working days until January 19, 2011, in order to accommodate more taxpayers and clients.

With the extension of its operations until nighttime, the City Treasurer urged all taxpayers to avoid the rush in filing their business permit applications by transacting earlier at the one-stop shop and offsite collection centers before deadline.

Daral emphasized that there will be no more extension of deadline, and that as mandated by law, 25 percent surcharge of the gross income and 2 percent monthly interest will be charged to late filers. (Nicole J. Managbanag)

New radio station to go on air
Tuesday, January 18, 2011
http://www.sunstar.com.ph/cagayan-de-oro/local-news

THE sixth AM radio station in Cagayan de Oro is set to go on air in the next few days.

The name of the radio station is not yet known, but the people behind it were former personnel of the "Radio Aguila ng Bayan," who were absorbed by the Ultra Craft Broadcasting Corporation owned by Jun Suan of Carmen.

Greet your friends and families this Sinulog season. Sun.Star covers Sinulog 2011 live!

According to Joy Apolinario, program Director of FM Radio Aguila, Ultra Craft Broadcasting will hold their offices at Suan Arcade, in Masterson St., Ilaya, Carmen.

Eighteen reporters and office staffs from former "Radio Aguila ng Bayan" were absorbed by Ultra Craft Broadcasting to become anchors and reporters in their program that will surely hit the airwaves, Apolinario said.

Recently, the newly hired reporters underwent a three-day seminar and learned the Kapisanan ng mga Broadcaster ng Pilipinas (KBP) rules, as well as the code of ethics and moral values on how to become a good reporter.

The other existing AM radio stations in Cagayan de Oro City are dxCC, dxIF, dxIM, dxCO and dxKO. (NJM)

THE annual “Salo Tabo sa Kapitolyo” or “Tabo sa Umahan” has once again showcased and promoted Misamis Oriental’s key products and tourism hotspots.

The week-long agro-tourism fair, held from January 10 to 15, had been the initiative of the Provincial Government to promote Otop (one Town One Product) of the different municipalities of Misamis Oriental.

One of the bestsellers among the products on display at the provincial capitol grounds is the grilled sweet corn from the Northern Mindanao Vegetable Association (NorMinVeggies), which earned P12,000 per day during the week-long fair.

According to Kayce Eduria, who represented NorMinVeggies, their sweet corn is selling like hotcakes with an average of between 500 to 800 corns sold per day at P20 per piece.

“Sales this year has increased to 30 percent compared last year,” he said.

Eduria said the secret to their in-demand first class sweet corns is that these are picked up at Dahilayan in Bukidnon and cooked right away -- fresh and sweet.

He said since a lot of vendors in Cagayan de Oro cook corns traditionally, which is “boiled,” they decided to cook it in a different way by roasting it like barbecue with margarine and salt, giving costumers two thumbs-up after tasting the product.

Eduria said their roasted sweet corn business started in 2007 and that every year, they always expect from their costumers positive results.

He claimed that one important thing they did during the Salo-Tabo was to help some children earn something by providing them temporary job as helpers.

“We make it a point the kids can eat food that are not common to them. Our sales are not a big deal to us as long as we had fun and had touched other people’s lives by showing them we care,” Eduria said.

This year’s Salo Tabo has shown the province’s best products such as the bibingka of Lugait and Manticao; the ginamos of Libertad and Initao; seaweed health snack and dried fish from Libertad; the Spanish-style sardines from Opol; the blacksmith from Gitagum; bricks and handmade paper from Villanueva; Sinamay of Lagonglong; the buko pie and coco products of Kinuguitan; banig from Binuangan; abaca and handmade paper from Salay; the chicken products of Sugbongcogon; abaca and other high-value crops of Claveria; bangus from Balingasag and the native delicacies and organic coco sugar of Gingoog City.

The province’s tourist destinations were also featured in the fair, which include the Divine Mercy Shrine in El Salvador; Lasang Secret Adventure in Initao; Duka Bay Dive Resort and river boating in Medina; and the Mantianak Park in Sugbongcogon.

Over-all winner of the Salo Tabo was the municipality of Balingasag while in second place is Binuangan and the third is the town of Naawan.

Coffee Works in Cagayan De Oro
Written under Ice Blended, Places

I first saw Coffee Works at the Sky Garden in SM City North EDSA but never really had the chance to try their drinks. That’s why when I went to Cagayan De Oro, I really made sure I’d visit the branch where it all started.

The original Coffee Works in CDO is located at the corner of Rosario Arcade, Limketkai Center. They started in 2005 and is said to be one of the favorite hangouts of Cagayanons.

http://www.thirstyblogger.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/mocha-frappe-coffeeworks.jpg

When I went there, the place was full at 4 o’clock in the afternoon – packed with people inside enjoying their coffee, cakes and the free WiFi.

http://www.thirstyblogger.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/coffeeworks-cdo.jpg

I didn’t know their best sellers so I ordered the coffee shop classic, Mocha Frappe (photo above) while a friend ordered the Hazelnut Frappe, which he said was good – not too sweet and went well with his pie.

My mocha frappe was good as well – not too sweet also and quite refreshing. The mocha taste is very close to Milo actually – which I liked because I love Milo.

http://www.thirstyblogger.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/coffee-works-cdo.jpg

If ever you find yourself in CDO, or perhaps in SM City North EDSA; then why not try Coffee Works. I assure you… you’ll like it there.

Ex-Miss Teen from Oro to celebrate 21st via books drive
Monday, 17 January 2011 00:00
Mindanao Goldstar daily

THE past 20 years in Stephanie Mae Sol's life has been generously showered with blessings and now that she is turning 21, she wants to be able to give back more to others. If in the past three years, she has been organizing birthday fashion shows to push forward her advocacies, now she wants to take it further by translating her advocacies into deeper actions.

In line with her New Year's resolution to concretize her ideals in project form, she aims to organize at least four events that will push her advocacy on education. Reminiscing the year that she won Miss Teen Philippines in 2004, she never forgot the question and answer portion where she was asked, " If you had P100 million to spend for a project for the youth, what will it be and why?" she answered, " I will build reading centers in my barangay until I will be able to put in every part of the country because I believe in the power of education. Education produces knowledge, values, skills and talent to help us grow and prosper. Education is also essential for economic growth and poverty reduction."
Steph may not have P100 million to build the reading centers now but with the passion that she wants to achieve her dreams of 100-percent schooled Filipinos, she is willing to give whatever she can to witness and be a part of making this dream come true.

Thus, her first big step in turning this dream into a reality is organizing a school supply drive and feeding program entitled One Steph At A Time. It is both a fund raising activity and a reducing-reusing-recycling program for the benefit of the students at Pagalungan Elementary School in Lumbia. The goal of the program is to collect the old semi-used and unused school supplies like notebooks, papers and pens to be repacked and given to 285 students at Pagalungan on January 24. On the same day, Steph wants to share with these students a vitamin-rich lunch. In this light, Steph would like to be a partner in helping realize the dreams of our Filipino youth by sharing any amount of cash or in kind (school supplies). Let's make 2011 explosive with blessings! *

CDO folks don’t care about zodiac change
Monday, 17 January 2011 00:00
By Mark Francisco
Mindanao Goldstar Daily

THE recent adjustment of our zodiac signs has Cagayanons not so perplexed. Businessman Titus Velez says, "You make your own fortune." Xavier University singing siren Kisha Manla on the other hand simply ignores it and quips, "It all depends on what kind of astrology you follow." Homegrown filmmaker and once-upon-a-time music radio jock Cloyd Winstanley opines that the myth of astrology has finally been proven. "It just proves that horoscopes are not true!"

Iligan City-based model Mary Jone Alo says, "Who invented zodiac sings, how come people believe more in this things rather than God, these things are unreal and make the people stupid and unable to see the truth, how can you believe what these things tell you if they are like a million of this zodiac guessings." All said, Mary Jone!

Xavier University AB Philosophy dude Philip Robert Jaramillo says, "I was actually appalled by the attention given to these mundane things. People weren't even as mad Zodiac Sign believers when it still didn't change, why the sudden shift of attention? Now everyone is fussing about their new signs and how they wish they were back to belonging to the same Zodiac Sign. People act like they really are affected about it, like they would die knowing that they've been living a lie. No one imposed that thing on your lives!"

US-based Cagayanon Tingting Zaragosa-Rimart says, "I do not rely on Zodiac signs, so I am not a bit bothered by it. This change only strengthens my skepticism. The signs may change, but people don't, unless there is utmost desire to." Bank employee Royce Rodriguez says, "I really don't understand what's the big deal about it. It's just signs. It does not affect HOW/ WHAT or WHO we are... or change who we were. People can still be anyone they want to be.:) Unless they're gonna change your last name, then THAT would be a big deal."

For Culinary Institute of Cagayan de Oro instructor Ivy Carla Banaag, "Never have i believed in Zodiac signs. First of all, life is what you make it. A person becomes who he is because of his choices, and not because of predetermined occurrences. Astronomy has nothing to do with what one will become. It's not even Biblical. I certainly believe that belief in zodiacs will make life more complicated. So there's no use in giving much fuss on these things."

ok ra japon ang bus...mominus na pud dayon ang traffic...grabe sab ning uban jeepney driver ba, murag halos 15 to 30 minute magstandby para mopick-up ug pasahero...5 minutes interval ra unta...magpaugat man pud...dayon naa pay mga labad nga mohunong sa tunga sa dalan para mopick up ug pasahero...

lage , ana sila that jeepneys are already part of our culture .. dili daw dapat i-phase out , maybe lessen the number of jeepneys to minimize the traffic within the city ..

lisod bitaw walaon ang jeepneys pero pwede man nato i-adapt ang mga colors og design sa atong jeepneys og ibutang sa mga buses. like for example, we still allow the TONGUE logo of donsals or the front grill of melcar into the buses. that way, our buses will be like big jeepneys but this time these buses will not be allowed to pick passengers in the middle of the highway or road because theyre big and can be noticed by the RTA immediately. kung mamasayro sila sa tunga sa dalan, dili kaagi ang gasunod og mabadlong dretso kay gaali man. i also agree that jeepneys/buses should be regulated. too many means of transportation mean more traffic to our small roads.

dark_knight_detectve
January 18th, 2011, 02:14 PM

People instead catch a motorela/sikad to travel that distance.

its nice to replace jeepneys with buses so that the traffic in cdeo can be minimized. having an electronic ticketing is not a bad idea but in case there are tourists, currency is still a necessity. these so called "electronic tickets" should be sold in groceries or malls or pharmacies or even small stores just like the way electronic loads are sold. that way "electronic tickets" can be bought easily for the convenience of both the locals and tourists. kung mapalit ang electronic ticket sa mga gagmay nga tindahan parehas sa electronic load, sayon ra kaayo mosakay sa mga buses.

we should definitely get rid of the sikads because they too are part of the root of the traffic. as for the motorela, im not quite sure if they should be taken out of the public's view. gamit ni sila para sa mga interiors where buses are limited. i would rather prefer to get rid of the sikads because they are not properly licensed compared to motorelas. parehas ra ilang purpose nga mahatod sa mga interior ang mga pasahero pero eye sore man gyud tanawon ang mga sikad. please dont get me wrong here.

Seeing hope with PAGASA

by Ben Moses Ebreo

QUZEON CITY, Jan. 18 (PIA) – “Pag-asa” means hope and that’s what we got when we went to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration(PAGASA) on Thursday(January 13) afternoon.

And we hit two birds in one stone is how we further described our one-hour stay at the Public Information Unit(PIU).

Although we failed to interview PAGASA assistant administrator Nathaniel Servando due to his hectic schedule, Venus Valdemoro, PIU’s acting head was there to assist us.

The sudden appearance of Representative Angelo Palmones of AGHAM partylist and author of the proposed modernization act of PAGASA who happened to be one of the lecturers for a group of visitors on an educational trip inside the compound boosted our spirits.T he opportunity came to us naturally.

While the proposed modernization act for the PAGASA has hit a snag in Congress, employees like Valdemoro can only depend on the present status and operations of their agency.

“While the proposed modernization of our agency which has long been pushed remains unacted, we are confident of our forecasting and communication efforts because no matter how accurate the information is, if we do not deliver them on time, then it becomes useless,” she said.

And feeling high from President Benigno Aquino’s praise from their recent forecasting performance, Valdemoro said “their agency is on the right track”.

PAGASA’s budget, according to Valdemoro rose from a mere P700 million in 2009 to P1.8 billion this year and is being supported from funding coming from foreign sources, she added.

Upgrading of equipments, 2010 purchases

Last year alone, PAGASA has acquired high performance computing system used by its forecasting divison -- one Automatic Weather Observation System installed at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport(NAIA) and one wind profiler at its science garden; 40 Automatic Weather Stations deployed nationwide; five Doppler Weather Radars in Subic, Hinatuan, Tampakan, Cebu, and Tagaytay; and two Marine Buoys deployed in Bantayan and Sibuyan islands to detect weather disturbances within and near the country.

Its weather forecasting scheme was also expanded, using a twitter account and its own web page or its hourly tropical cyclone warning updates.

“From this technology upgrade, we now have six-hour weather bulletins compared to only one hour when we were still utilizing our old equipments,” Valdemoro noted.

PAGASA has also ventured into local climate change trend analyses and modeling scenarios, bridging the gap between climate information users and providers and Global Information Mapping(GIS) of seasonal and monthly rainfall for monitoring, purchase of state-of-the-art telecommunications equipment, and upgrading of its flood forecasting and warning system.

The synchronized upgrading of equipments and training of its employees, Valdemoro said, must be done to properly transform their services as a world-class weather forecasting agency in the country.

At present, PAGASA has five regional forecasting centers such as in Tuguegarao City covering Northern Luzon; Albay province covering Southern Luzon; Cebu City covering the Visayas region; Cagayan de Oro City covering Mindanao region; and at the National Capital Region(NCR).

According to Valdemoro, a community-based multi-hazard mapping in 27 provinces and funded by the AUSAID is going on to identify geologic and hydrometeorologic vulnerabilities in their respective areas.

She said various projects which cover upgrading of equipments, training, and establishment of other weather-forecasting related projects and early warning systems will be pursued this year to fully develop its competence.

Hopes for 2011

Representative Palmones of AGHAM partylist and author of the proposed Modernization Act of PAGASA also expressed optimism this year.

The proposed bill, he said, has been one of the two legislative concerns discussed and approved by the Legislative-Executive Advisory Development Council(LEDAC) last week.

“We hope that it will materialize this year because President Aquino saw its importance and significance,” Palmones stressed.

Palmones’ P6 billion PAGASA modernization act features the upgrading of equipments and training of technical personnel.

He said a Consortium on Meteorological Educational Training(COMET) program has been launched recently in four schools such as in Don Mariano Marcos College(DMMC) in Ilocos sur, Bicol University(BU), Central Luzon State University(CLSU) in Nueva Ecija and the Visayas State University(VSU) in Leyte. It will be open for students taking up engineering, physics and mathematics.

The program which gave scholarship slots for the first batch of 40 students would address the insufficient technical manpower of PAGASA by offering a two-year course on Bachelor of Science in Meteorology and in turn go back to the agency to work including teaching others under the program.

Palmones added that he also filed a bill exempting PAGASA employees from the Salary Standardization Law(SSL) but proposed a hazard pay for them to boost the morale of its employees.

“While we need to lobby for all of these proposed developments, disaster preparedness must always start from the people,” Palmones said.# PIA NVizcaya

Salo-Tabo booth sales reach P3.13M
Tuesday, January 18, 2011

GROSS sales of farm produce on display for five days at the booths of Misamis Oriental's Salo-Tabo around the Provincial Capitol garden reached P3.13 million, said the provincial agricultural office.

Misamis Oriental Governor Oscar Moreno congratulated the provincial agricultural office and other departments, as well as the support of regional government agencies and farmers organizations for the successful holding of the quarterly agricultural fair.

He also thanked all the participating municipal governments and other exhibitors for highlighting the province's best agricultural practices and vast potentials dubbed as "Tabo sa Umahan," which coincides with the province's 81st foundation anniversary celebration.

The P3.13 million sales were generated by the 18 booths that were set up by participating municipalities and other exhibitors, said provincial agriculturist Danilo Maputol.

Farm products on display at the booths include varied types of leafy and fruit vegetables, root crops, fruits, bangus, coco sugar, goat's and cow's milk and processed agricultural products.

Maputol also said that the overall best dressed booth award went to the municipality of Balingasag, while the second and third "best dressed" booth recognitions were bagged by Binuangan and Naawan municipalities.

This, after Balingasag and Naawan booths emerged as "best dressed" for the first and second congressional districts.

Earlier, agriculture undersecretary for operations Joel Rudinas, who graced the agri-fair's opening ceremonies, pointed out that Misamis Oriental's 81st year is also the Bureau of Plant Industry's 81st anniversary, which is on January 20.

Rudinas said the agriculture department under President Benigno Aquino III is seeking to reduce the country's overdependence on rice imports in the next two years despite crop failures in some parts of the country due to the effects of climate change.

"We need to focus on sustainable food production," Rudinas said. (PR)

Barangay Carmen earns P40T a day
By Nicole J. Managbanag
Tuesday, January 18, 2011

BARANGAY Carmen, one of the biggest barangays in Cagayan de Oro with 30,000 voters, is reportedly earning well in terms of issuing barangay certificates (cedula), permits and clearances.

Carmen barangay chairperson Rolando Uy said that at the start of 2011, their remittance to the City Government had reached P40,000 per day compared with last year's P30,000 every other day.

Uy said clients would flock at their office as early as 8 a.m. These clients preferred their state-of-the-art computerized system as it gives fast processing of their request plus personalized pictures for their barangay clearance.

"As Barangay Carmen gets more urbanized and more establishments are rising, we are also earning which we remitted to the City Government for transparency," Uy said.

He added their modernized system has long been realized since his first term as barangay chairman 20 years ago.

"That is why many barangays as far as Dansolihon and Patag prefer our service," Uy said.

He emphasized that their only problem now is the lack of supply of stubs for the official receipts since City Hall only give them a limited five stubs in a week.

"The five stubs are consumed in just one day, which is a big problem on our part since all we want is to be transparent and we don't want to process documents without official receipts," Uy said.

He said that what the barangay earned in a day will be well monitored and remitted on the following day to City Hall for documentation.

Uy also assured the people who visit the barangay hall everyday to be given equal treatment in processing their documents on a first-come first-served basis.

He said Barangay Carmen has long been independent in terms of projects despite the fact that it is earning well compared with other barangays.

"I took the initiative of requesting for projects from my friends in Congress to make Barangay Carmen more progressive," said Uy, who is not allied with the administration of Mayor Vicente Emano.

Both Uy and Emano ran in the mayoralty race in the May 10, 2010 elections.

The barangay is also providing free medicines and vitamins to its indigent residents.

The Company invades SM City
By Nicole J. Managbanag
Tuesday, January 18, 2011

ASIA'S premiere vocal group, The Company, has invaded SM City Cagayan de Oro on January 15 to entertain Kagay-anons with their signature songs at the Atrium.

The multi-talented quintet, composed of Anna Christina Quintos Uy, Vadim "Moy" Villaluz Ortiz, Diohanna "Sweet" Plantado Tiongson, Jay Chan Marquez and Cecile Bautista Reynoso, serenaded the audience with songs from their latest album "Lighthearted" from Viva Records.

Among the most requested song from the crowd is the all-time favorite "Empire State of Mind" from the famous musical comedy-drama television series "Glee", which topped the Billboard charts in 2010 and originally sang by Jay-Z and Alecia Keys.

The quintet also performed "Do You Remember" by Jay Sean; "Thinking of You" by Katy Perry; "One Less Lonely Girl/Boy" by Justin Bieber; "Fireflies" by Owl City; "Half of my Heart" by John Mayer; "Fifteen" by Taylor Swift and "Let's Just Fall In Love Again" by Jason Castro.

They also sang "Lucky" by Jason Mraz and Colbie Caillat; "Smile" by Lily Allen; "You Belong With Me" by Taylor Swift; "Two Is Better Than One" by Boys Like Girls; "Good Girls Go Bad" by Cobra Starship and "Where Are You Now" by Honor Society.

The rains did not dampen the spirit of the quintet as they belted out songs just to entertain the audience who requested for more songs even after the finale.

The Company has been in the music industry for 25 years and until this time, the group's charisma never fades.

After the show, The Company gamely stayed for an autograph signing with their fans who bought their album.

Ivy Guantero, public relations officer of SM City Cagayan de Oro, said bringing local artists to perform at SM is a treat to their loyal customers who have been supporting them through all these years.

Guantero said patronizing original albums is like saying "no" to pirated ones, which is one of the advocacies of the SM chain of malls.

:okay: :okay: :okay:

Got a glimpse of Johndorf Ventures Corporation’s Granvia Square Condominium from The Pueblo Post. As shown, it will only have four (4) floors, a change from early info of having 6 levels. Well, I believe this building will be the first vertical condominium to be completed at Pueblo de Oro’s North Site, well ahead of Primavera.

Pueblo de Oro will soon have an eco-friendly way to bring residents around the Township.
Elena Orpilla, the current shuttle operator, will be purchasing from Manila the Township’s first electronic shuttle. The e-shuttles will be powered with electricity, unlike traditional vehicles which run on gasoline.
The shuttles run from 5:30 in the morning starting at San Agustin Valley Homes and Forest View Homes until 10:00 p.m. If SM has a sale, they operate until 12:00 a.m. The idea came about through Pueblo de Oro’s, SM’s and the operator’s desire to be more eco-friendly.

The Pueblo de Oro Township is emerging as the condominium hub of Cagayan de Oro (CdeO) with the presence of four condominiums in its vicinity.
Hotel Koresco has two condominium buildings in its complex in the Pueblo Golf Estates, catering mainly to their Korean golfer guests. PODC has developed The Courtyards, the city’s first horizontal condominium. Trade Street in the Pueblo Business Park is humming with the construction of two more condominiums.
ItalPinas is ready to go full blast with the construction of their ten-storey Primavera Residences, an eco-friendly building which will be the first green building in Cagayan de Oro. Meanwhile, Johndorf Ventures Corp.’s four-storey Granvia Square condominium is steadily taking shape next to Concentrix.
The condominium boom in Pueblo de Oro only affirms Uptown CdeO’s position as Cagayan de Oro’s new center for growth and development.

Laguindingan airport project nears completion
Wednesday, 19 January 2011 00:00
Mindanao Goldstar Daily

CONSTRUCTION of the passenger terminal building of the Laguindingan airport in Misamis Oriental is almost 50 percent done. In an 18-page report released last Jan. 7, the Laguindingan Airport Project Management Office of the Department of Transportation and Communications (DOTC) indicated that the control tower building is 37 percent done.

However, acquisition of the air navigation facilities inside the control tower building is still in the bidding stage, the DOTC said. The air navigation facilities consist of two parts: navigation aids facilities to guide planes taking off and landing, and aeronautical ground lighting system for planes taxiing. The navigation aids facilities consist of the instrument landing system (composed of localizer, glide path equipment and distance measuring equipment), DVOR/DME, automated weather observing system, high frequency and VHF system for air traffic communication, testing of equipment and commissioning flight test and operational test run.

The aeronautical ground lighting system consists of underground conduits and cables, airfield lighting system and electrical equipment composed of high and low voltage electrical equipment with cables. Gov. Oscar Moreno said in a press conference last Tuesday that all navigation aids facilities would be acquired with supervision by the International Civil Aviation Organization (Icao). As of December last year, the National Economic Development Authority (Neda) approved the financing of the P755-million air navigation system, with P629-million of the amount shouldered by the Export-Import Bank of Korea, and P126-million will come from Philippine government coffers.

Meanwhile, pavement works for the runway, taxiway and planes parking bay is 63 percent complete and the cargo terminal building is 56 percent complete. Both runway and taxiway are rigid pavement, construction of which is also supervised by the Icao. The runway has a turnaround pad at each end with a 60-meter additional overrun on the east end. It can accommodate an Airbus A320-100 airplane. The parking bay is designed for planes to park in nose-in position. Overall, construction of the Laguindingan airport is 74.97 percent or 3.18 percent ahead of schedule.

Oro designers to hold fashion show
Wednesday, January 19, 2011

THE Oro Fashion Designers Guild (OFDG) is set to hold a fashion show dubbed "Designers 2011" on January 22, 4 p.m. at Limketkai Mall Rotunda.

The show will feature 13 fashion designers of Cagayan de Oro who are members of OFDG and Designers Assembly (DA).

More than 45 ramp models and beauty queens will show off the designers' world-class and extraordinary creations.

"Designers 2011" also hopes to showcase the Kagay-anon stylists as global designers.

The OFDG is composed of senior designers Gil Macaibay, Benjie Manuel, Mark Yaranon, Joshua Guibone, Celeste Magsalay, Alma Mae Roa and Alquin Cap-atan while the DA, which is affiliated with the OFDG, is composed of new designers John Magallanes, Boogie Rivera, Xerxes Maghanoy, Ivy Eugenio, Leode Agustin and Maria Soriano.

The OFDG started in 2006 through the effort of Iponan Barangay Chairperson Gaga Brilleta, with Manuel sitting as president since its inception.

As a prelude to the Saturday event, this paper will feature the 13 fashion designers who will be participating in the fashion show, including their sketches, to be printed in a three-part series.

Ivy Eugenio

Ivy Eugenio is one of the chosen few to join Designers 2011 and it will be her first time to join such show and to put up her collection in the runway.

However, she is already exposed to fashion at an early age and the person who influenced her the most is her grandmother who was the first and the only dressmaker in their town.

Ivy said she is very grateful to Gil Macaibay for giving her her first chance to showcase her creative designs and ideas to fashion and for formally introducing her to the fashion industry, which is one of her wildest dreams.

She is a person who has high regard for a woman's figure, that's why her designs aim to mold and flaunt the wearer's figure and give it some twists at the same time.

Designers like Herve L. Leoux (Herves Leger), Alexander Mcqueen and Vivienne Westwood are some of her great inspirations when it comes to fashion style.

To this date she still lives up to her mantra: "Indulge to the best vice ever invented: Fashion!"

Boogie Musni Rivera

October 20, 1986, when this young man was born and who would think that he could join the circle of the most influential designers in the city!

During his teenage years, Boogie was always seen clutching bunch of papers which amazingly turned out to be great sketches. As a matter of fact, he was the one who designed his sister's wedding dress when he was still in grade school. For him, it's just a no-nonsense sketch but surprisingly, his sister was amazed and decided to wear his design.

For more than a decade now, Boogie has been designing clothes (ball gowns, cocktail dresses, barong tagalong, etc.) inspired by his favorite international designers Oscar dela Renta and Kenneth Cole and their local counterparts Rajo Laurel and Edwin Tan.

Aside from designing, Boogie busies himself with dance choreography, modeling and teaching Personality Development to young adults that shows his versatility that would one day give rise to his life time dream of producing extensive line clothing in the country.

"Designers 2011" would serve as his stepping stone to officially enter the world of fashion and to showcase his three-piece collection, inspired for red carpet gowns that can be used in a promenade event.

The collection is made of simple materials yet done in a creative style. It is simple but with an added touch of headdresses made from horns that would surely look sophisticated in the runway.

Xerxes V. Maghanoy

This 23-year-old young man is the youngest among all the designers who are joining "Designers 2011." However, his talent and passion in the fashion industry is just as equal as those ahead of him.

Xerxes graduated from the Fashion Institute in Manila and was introduced to fashion show competitions at an early age.

In the upcoming Designers 2011, it wouldn't be his first time but this would be the best fashion show for not just three or four but 13 designers in the city who would showcase their talents and designs on their runway.

Inspired by the natural flow and curve of a woman's silhouette, Xerxes's collection aims to marry classic sensuality with modern luxury. It showcases his personal design aesthetic and shows the stiffness of the pleats, fluidity of drapes and femininity of ruffles. A pleated dress gives off a vibe of agricultural class and a draped dress provides flow of movement while highlighting curves and concealing flaws. A ruffled dress shows sensuality with a touch of mystery.

The "Designers 2011" would be a blast, he says.

John Mark T. Magallanes

John Mark Tibaco Magallanes of J. Magallanes Design Studio has been inspired by the fashion culture of the '50s and '60s. In his theme "Flash Forward," the future is shaped by the things and events in the past.

His collection consists of sinuous blend of beautiful garments with graphic undertones, plays on pleating, geometric shape cutouts and body conscious structure done in black, cobalt blue and tomato red. He uses satin, chiffon, Mikapo silk and organza fabric.

John Mark got his BS Degree in Agricultural Engineering at Xavier University in 1998, finished his master in Management major in Management Engineering at Liceo de Cagayan University in 2001 and earned a diploma in Fashion Design at La Salle College International in 2003. He was once a finalist of Philippine Fashion Design Competition in Davao City, Mega Magazine Young Designers' Competition and rated Top Ten Philippine Fashion Design Competition.

His main office is located at the second floor of Magallanes Building in Zone 5, Bulua, Cagayan de Oro City. (Tomorrow's issue would feature designers Benjie Manuel, Alquin Cap-atan, Alma Mae Roa, Gil Macaibay and Mark Yaranon)

Pepsi to use biomass power in Cagayan de Oro facility (http://www.gmanews.tv/story/211067/pepsi-to-use-biomass-power-in-cagayan-de-oro-facility)
01/20/2011 | 05:18 PM

Renewable energy firm PowerSource Energy Services Inc. will develop a 2-megawatt biomass-fired power plant in Pepsi-Cola Products Philippines Inc.'s factory in Cagayan de Oro City.

The power plant, estimated to cost around P200 million, will be wholly financed by PowerSource, Pepsi-Cola said in a statement Thursday.

Pepsi-Cola — maker of softdrinks Pepsi-Cola, 7Up, Mountain Dew, and Mirinda — said that PowerSource will supply its factory with electricity for 15 years.

The beverage firm said the power plant will use coconut shells and husks and other coconut residues as fuel feedstock.

"This will result in additional income and livelihood support to farmers in neighboring districts," Pepsi said.

PowerSource founder and CEO Frederick LaCroix said developing Pepsi-Cola's power plant is one of its "major corporate steps" as the beverage firm is one of the leading manufacturers of soft drinks.

The power company specializes in developing, building, and operating facilities that reduce the carbon footprint and energy expenses of large corporate customers.

Development of the biomass-fired power plant still start next February, Pepsi-Cola commercial director Gabby Gabinete said, adding that the project will spur the growth of environmental entrepreneurship.

"As the demand for biomass materials grows significantly, farmers and environmental advocates will identify new opportunities to convert agricultural wastes to additional income," Gabinete said.

With the use of renewable energy, Pepsi-Cola expects 20 percent average savings in its operating cost, he said.

Pepsi-Cola plans to forge tie-ups with renewable energy developers for the 11- to 15-MW requirement of its 11 manufacturing plants. Gabinete said.

The renewable energy facilities will be located in La Union, Pampanga, Muntinlupa, Naga, Cebu, Bacolod, Leyte, Iloilo, Zamboanga, Davao, and Cagayan de Oro. — With Jesse Edep/VS, GMANews.TV
