Bayantel to extend Oro phone services
RESIDENTS of Cagayan de Oro City will soon be able to call their loved ones and friends in Gingoog, Butuan, Agusan and other places in Northern Mindanao for free during the Divisoria Night Cafe.
Mayor Vicente Emano sad Bayantel will set up a free calling station on Fridays and Saturdays in Divisoria for the whole month of March.
He said this will enable Kagay-anons to call their loved ones in other places for free.
The mayor expressed his gratitude to the management of Bayantel for extending such free service to the people.
He said this will benefit the city's poor, who cannot afford to pay long distance bills.
In an interview, Bayantel marketing associate Edward Culta said the free call they offer is in line with the company's commitment to serve the Filipino people.
Bayantel is a subsidiary of the Lopez group of Companies. He said the free calling station at Divisoria is only the first and more will be set u in different parts of the city.
"You will see us kahit sang sulok (in any corner) to give services to the people of the city...," he added.
He said the free calls first covers Northern Mindanao only but may soon be expanded to cover other areas in the country.
Culta said the company considers these as local calls because what is being used is technology with a big capacity and thus can offer services at lower costs.
The free calling services of Bayantel started last night from 8 to 10:30 p.m., according to Culta.
He said the company was able to secure a one month permit for this but will renew it next month so that it can continue serving city residents.
He said this is also aimed at making the public aware that they can now avail of the newest technology in telephone system.
In November, last year Bayantel launched its SPAN system in the city using modern telephone technology from the United States.
Under this technology, subscribers can use the phone for texting and for calls. It also has other features such as caller IDs among others, which had not been available to the city's constituents until now.
The City Government has welcomed this development noting that the improvement of communication system will spur the city's development even as it continues to move towards its vision to be a mega city.

Names for Oro fiesta catchword pouring in
By Danilo V. Adorador III
ENTRIES are now pouring in for the search of a catchword that is to become the official name of Cagayan de Oro's major annual festival.
From the barely-heard ancient references to the day's common lingo, proposed catchwords are flowing from hand-carried entries and the Internet, said Ruben Vegafria, chairman of the Promote CDO Foundation, a private non-stock, non-profit organization which will handle the city's grandest festival this year.
Promote CDO's leading role in this year's festival marks the first time that a private organization handles what has been a largely government-initiated activity.
And the first time that a quest for the festival's permanent name has been launched--as its title has, for years, been morphing from the original "Kagay-an Festival" to the semantically generic "Tsada Kagay-an Festival."
Some have argued, however, that "Tsada"--which generally means "good"--is not a unique Kagay-anon terminology because the word is also used in Dumaguete to mean the same thing.
"This is a community event so it is only proper to have the general public involved in choosing the festival's name," Vegafria told Sun.Star Cagayan de Oro.
One entry bats for the festival to be named "Himologan," a hill-top settlement of early Kagay-anons. Another suggests elevating Lambagohan, a minor river festival, as the dominant fiesta theme. The festival coincides with the Feast of Saint Agustine, the city's patron saint.
Vegafria describes a possible winning entry as "having a rich historical and cultural context," adding each proposed festival name requires an essay "where the proponent lays all the arguments to strengthen his or her proposal."
Promote CDO Foundation reserves the right to come up with the final festival catchword which may be a combination of concepts of the finalists, he said.
Although the August festivity is still months away, he explained that selecting its name this early will give Promote CDO ample time to "package" the festival's new brand name for domestic and international tourists.
Vegafria, the immediate past president of the Oro Chamber, has been actively pushing for a central brand image of the festival, which he said, will make it at par with the major festivals in the country such as Davao's Kadayawan and Cebu's Sinulog.
To further boost tourism, he also proposed the creation of a central body tasked for organizing and handling conventions in the city.

RLC net income up 39% in FY '06

Listed property firm Robinsons Land Corp. on Wednesday said its net profit for the fiscal year ending September 2006 rose 39.5 percent to P1.718 billion from the P1.231 billion recorded in 2005.
Robinsons Land said its gross revenues also improved 29.7 percent to P6.643 billion.
Robinsons Land president and chief operating officer Frederick D. Go said the good performance of the company's ventures in commercial centers, high-rise buildings, housing and land development and hotels was the reason for the healthy income in 2006.
"All our business units performed very well as a result of the strategic initiatives we have pursued in recent years. Each business unit has expansion programs that will grow our investment property portfolio in malls, offices, and hotels as well as increase our real estate sales of condominiums, subdivision land and houses," Go said.
The commercial centers division, which operates Robinsons Land's shopping malls contributed the largest share of revenue with P3.22 billion. As of end-2006, RLC had 18 shopping malls.
Its office and residential buildings division posted a 90-percent growth in revenues at P2.03 billion.
Go said their office buildings have attracted top BPO industry firms while its residential condominiums are selling very well due to strong domestic and international demand.
"Robinsons Cybergate Center 2 is now operational and will contribute to the rental revenue generated by office spaces owned by RLC in Robinsons Cybergate 1, Robinsons Summit Center, Robinsons Equitable Tower, and Galleria Corporate Center. The Company's total office area portfolio in the Buildings Division alone now stands at 120,000 square meters," Go said.
The housing and land development division, on the other hand, reported revenues of P488 million, a nine percent rise from a year earlier.
Among the ongoing projects of Robinsons Homes are Bloomfields Tagaytay, Bloomfields Davao, Richmond Hills and Monte Del Sol both in Cagayan De Oro, Mirado Dos in San Fernando and Costa Verde in Davao City.
Robinsons Land's hotels division revenue spiked 81 percent to P904 million, primarily due to the full operation of the deluxe 260 room Crowne Plaza Hotel within the Galleria Complex last year.
As of September last year, RLC's hotels division had an average occupancy rate of 68 percent. Other hotels operated by the company are Holiday Inn Galleria Manila, Cebu Midtown Hotel; and Robinsons Apartelle. - GMANews.TV (http://www.gmanews.tv/story/28017/RLC-net-income-up-39-in-FY-06)

The Philippine Star 03/12/2007
Robinsons Homes Inc. (RHI), the housing and land development division of Robinsons Land Corp., is launching two more projects in Cagayan De Oro following the success of its first residential subdivision, Hillsborough Pointe.
RHI senior vice-president and general manager Malu M. Alferez said the two new projects are Richmond Hills in Bgy. Camaman-an and Monte del Sol which is located along the Cagayan de Oro-Iligan National Highway.
"The property market in this region remains strong and the demand for homes is steadily growing. At present, we are catering to a wide and diversified market, which ranges from lower income groups for Monte del Sol while the Richmond Hills property is very attractive to the overseas Filipino workers, retirees and the middle income market," said Alferez.
To be sold as "lots only", Monte del Sol and Richmond Hills will be a gated community that will have a park and a playground and a multi-purpose activity center.
"We are going to develop the property to meet the housing needs of the work force population of Cagayan de Oro and the neighboring provinces. The development is located along the National Highway, making it very accessible to those blue-collared workers who are employed in nearby factories," Alferez said.
Just five minutes away, the eight-hectare Richmond Hills is a stone throw away from the commercial and business districts.
Average cuts with option for housing has been pegged at 150 square meters.
RHI has allotted P1 billion for its capital expenditures this year which include the launch of 10 new projects in key areas of Luzon and Mindanao.
Aside from Cagayan de Oro, the company will also build homes in Laoag, Davao, Cebu, Iloilo, Tagaytay, and Pampanga.

Robinsons Land launches
2 subdivision projects in South
By Honey Madrilejos-Reyes

ROBINSONS Homes, Inc. (RHI), the housing and land development division of the Gokongwei-controlled Robinsons Land Corp. (RLC), will do two new subdivision projects in northern Mindanao this year.
In a statement over the weekend, RHI senior vice president and general manager Malu M. Alferez said the company will launch Monte del Sol, a gated community catering to lower-income groups.
Located along the Cagayan de Oro-Iligan National Highway in Misamis Oriental, Monte del Sol will be designed to meet the housing requirements of the workforce population of Cagayan de Oro and neighboring provinces.
“We will make it very accessible to those blue-collared workers who are employed in nearby factories,” Alferez said. “To be sold as lots only, the project will be priced affordably together with amenities like park and playground and a multi-purpose activity center.”
The Richmond Hills, on the other hand, will target the overseas Filipino workers (OFWs), retirees and middle-income markets.
Sitting on top of the nearest hill in Cagayan de Oro, the 8-hectare property is very near the commercial and business districts.
“When fully developed, Richmond Hills will be a beautiful mid-cost residential gated community, complete with tastefully designed entry marker, park and playground facilities with a multi-purpose play court, swimming pool, clubhouse and promenade. Average cuts with option for housing will be pegged at 150 sq. meters,” Alferez said.
The new projects are follow-ups to the Hillsborough Pointe subdivision launched by RHI three years ago in Cagayan de Oro.
“The property market in this region remains strong and the demand for homes is steadily growing,” noted Alferez. She did not mention, though, the cost RHI will be spending to develop the new projects.
RHI is an important segment of RLC, a publicly listed company at the Philippine Stock Exchange (PSE). It is also into the development of residential condominiums, office buildings, shopping malls and hotels all over the country.

Consumers seen to enjoy lower power rates
By Danilo V. Adorador III
SOME good news for a change.
Power end-users will experience a decrease in electricity rates starting in the first quarter of this month, said Cagayan de Oro Councilor Jose Benjamin Benaldo.
Benaldo, who heads the power-consumer advocate Mindanao Power Bloc (MPB), said the drop followed the Energy Regulatory Commission's (ERC) approval of the National Power Corporation's (NPC) petition for rate adjustments on the foreign currency exchange rate fluctuations.
Under the Incremental Currency Exchange Rate Adjustment (Icera), Napocor is allowed to recover the cost for changes in the foreign exhange. The reduction was buoyed by a strong peso in recent months, said Benaldo, who also heads the energy committee in the City Council.
Although he acknowledged it to be minimal, the decrease would go along way in emphasizing what a strong peso can do even to residential users who have been demanding for lower electric rates, Benaldo said.
In two orders dated Feb. 7, 2007, ERC told Napocor to lower down its current rate by P.0430 per kilowatt hour (kwh) for users in Luzon, P0.3151 kwh for those in the Visayas, and P0.0045 kwh for those in Mindanao for the first month of implementation.
Benaldo said the twin ERC decisions were borne out by efforts of MPB, the Freedom from Debt Coalition, and other consumer groups, which earlier petitioned the ERC to lower electric rates based on the appreciating peso.
ERC chairman Rodolfo Alba¤o said the incremental fuel and independent power producer (IPP) costs (commonly known as Gram or Generation Rate Adjustment Mechanism) and foreign exchange rates caused the reductions.
"The public had been expecting a reduction in its rates as the Philippine currency exchange rate gets better; however, the directive does not reflect yet the improvement as it covers earlier billing periods," Alba¤o added.
Deferred fuel and IPP costs refer to the increase or decrease (movements) in the fuel and purchase power costs portion of the approved generation charges for
Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao Grids while deferred foreign exchange fluctuation costs are the changes in currency exchange.
The Napocor said the deferred fuel and foreign exchange adjustments are allowed pass-through charges.
The provisionally approved rates of Napocor will take effect starting with the February 26 to March 25, 2007 billing period, Albaño said, adding that Napocor customers will be charged a lower rate until such period specified in the ERC orders. (With reports from Sunnex)

THERE is no more stopping to the development of what would be one ofthe city’s grandest subdivision projects. Mayor Vicente Emano said the groundbreaking of the Ayala Subdivision project in Upper Macasandig will take place next month. He said after the construction of the subdivision clubhouse, the company will start the development of the 40-hectare high-end housing project. The mayor recently approved the company’s application for development permit. Ayala is one of the country’s giant companies that is pouring in huge investments in the city, noting its promising economic prospects. (LCR)

LEGISLATORS today approved the development permit and locational clearance of another subdivision project. After a thorough scrutiny, the City Council committee on subdivision chaired by Councilor Edgar Cabanlas recommended approval of the application for locational clearance and development permit of Liberty Land for its Bloomingdale Subdivision Phases 1 and 2 project in Iponan.Councilor Cabanlas, however, required the developer to increase the width of the main road of the high-end subdivision project from 12-meter to 16-meter as stipulated in the city ordinance.Councilors Cabanlas and Reynaldo Advincula, together with a technical team from the City Planning and Development Office inspected the site on Friday.Meanwhile, the committee will meet with representatives of the Housing and Land Use Regulatory Board (HLURB) and the Register of Deeds during its meeting this week to tackle matters pertaining to the implementation of socialized housing projects under the Urban Housing and Development Act.Councilor Cabanlas said the socialized housing component of subdivision projects are meant to answer the housing needs of the marginalized group, who cannot afford to pay high monthly amortizations. Thus, he said, developers should fully comply with this. (LCR)

by lcr/city council office
Date Published: 2007-03-12
THE development of Agora market is in the offing. Mayor Vicente Emano said that after long negotiations, an investor has agreed to undertake the project soon. The mayor said the development will include the bus terminal and the vegetable landing area. The Power learned that the proponent yesterday submitted his proposal for the implementation of the P250-million project under the Build-Operate-Transfer scheme for a period of 25 years. "Kon aduna pa lamang unta akoy usa pa ka termino, ang dakbayan mao na lamang usab magtukod sa maong bag-ong public market, imbis ipaagi pa sa BOT ug usab mapadali ang construction sa JR Borja-Carmen Bridge ubos sa Spanish grant," the mayor added.
FrancisXavier March 13th, 2007, 09:47 AM so this will be another multi level modern public market... i dont like the Bus terminal redevelopment idea though.. i guess it's high time that they transfer it somewhere in the east, or expand the Eastbound terminal instead. busses coming from butuan, bukidnon, and davao really cause heavy traffic in that part of the city.

Like Pueblo de Oro Township, Ayala also have 350 hectares of land of their project here. As of now only 40 hectares first they develop into posh subdivision. In their plan, Ayala will also build business district which comprises retail shop, hotels, office buildings, and IT park.

boju March 14th, 2007, 01:46 AM Coming Home: Impressions of a Balikbayan on a Brief Visit to his Hometown
By Roy Gaane, Kagay-anon International
Everytime I come back to Cagayan de Oro, there is always a new hotel or establishment. My stay in Cagayan de Oro was only for a few days, Feb 22 to Mar 4. I stayed at the Grand City hotel. With 400 golfers swarming the city that week, the hotel was full and so were other hotels. I'm glad I booked in advance through DOT-10.
Thanks to a very generous friend I had the use of a car and a driver for the duration of my stay. Grand City also has a pension house and another eatery at the back. Walled inside is a parking lot for its guests. Very convenient.
The Ketkai mall was filled with people. But there was a program in its quadrangle that I did not like. Little girls who looked 7 to 9 years old in skimpy skirts and blouses were gyrating onstage to rock music. I don't what got into the minds of the choreographer and the program director. Of course, those innocent girls did not know what they were performing. I also checked on SM and like Ketkai, there were many shoppers or people taking advantage of the airconditioned mall. Where do all those people come from? I was there on a working and school day.
I checked the Canitoan-Bulua road. We complain of traffic but less people use that road just like the Taguanao bridge. Eventually, I believe people will be using those. Even the JR Borja road that goes to Cugman is not fully utilized. Speaking of traffic, I find the congestion to be lesser compared to last year. Still not ideal but a tiny bit improved.
No genius can improve the Cagayan de Oro traffic with our narrow streets and with more people moving in. The streets have no lines and drivers don't observe traffic rules and common courtesy. Some of the street lights didn't function when I was there. With the 2 bridges soon to open, that should help but the Tomas Saco street in Nazareth would be a nightmare. The City has to relocate City Central school and the provincial high school to the peripheries of the city. And open the streets of Mabini, Montalvan, Kalambagohan, Makambus from Velez to Corrales.
When I was in grade school, the schools served as boundaries of the City poblacion before Corrales was opened. Now they are in the heart of the City.
But I like the restaurants and coffee houses. We have many of those places where we can bring guests with pride. We have Café Laguna, Bigby’s, Sunburst to name a few. I heard that Pine Hills of Bukidnon will soon open in Cagayan. Every time I go to Malaybalay or pass by Malaybalay I always make it a point to stop by Pine Hills. Its simply the best in Northern Mindanao.
The Nite Cafe makes Cagayan de Oro unique. I like the design of the 2 restrooms, one by Bonifacio and the other by Rizal. But I have not checked the inside.
The ATM that I used there was those of Equitable Banking. Safety wise, they are better than the ones I use in the U.S. People behind you don't see the money you are taking out and your card cannot easily be captured by the machine because it is being spit out right after you enter it then all you have to do is follow instructions and enter your pin number.
Its good to see some tourists. When I was at the hotel I would see caucasians going in and out. Of course there are lots of Koreans. Almost a dozen Korean women from Manila to Cagayan were in my flight.
In Indahag, roads were paved. I was told by Ayala. I was also at the A Brown development in Agusan still in the works. It has a breathtaking view of Macajalar Bay.
I have to mention that Kagay-an Resort formerly Lawndale Springs is very much improved thanks to its Manager, Nanette Roa. She has done a wonderful landscape and keeping the place clean. It was alive with picnickers when I was there.

boju March 14th, 2007, 02:00 AM ISSUE REGARDING TO LIMIT OROPORT DEVELOPMENTS IN FAVOR FOR MICT
Mike Banos: Neither Them Nor Us But We
By Mike Baños
I’m honestly perplexed by the tempest in a teapot raised by the Mindanao Economic Development Council’s recent declaration to “limit” further developments at the Cagayan de Oro Baseport “to avoid competition” with the port being operated by Phividec (i.e., the Mindanao Container Terminal or MCT).
For one, the president herself already previously declared that development efforts would henceforth be focused on “key infrastructure projects” of identified Super Regions, which in the case of Mindanao specifically cites the Laguindingan Airport Development Project and the Panguil Bay Bridge Project in Region 10.
Second, I can’t understand why the city council is so upset with Usec. Virgilio Leyrentana’s memo when it’s been a long-standing gripe of local officials from the region how the MEDCo, even during its glory days under FVR, always seemed to be partial to channeling development initiatives such as the BIMP-Eaga towards Davao, in deference to its long-held status as the premier city of Mindanao.
A thousand angels swearing the good undersecretary has the island’s best interests at heart when he signed the memorandum would not change the way this document is perceived by the business and government leaders from this region. The NEDA’s declaration last year that Northern Mindanao is now the biggest economy in Mindanao must have shaken the garbo of a lot of people further down south, so I wouldn’t at all be surprised if this is but the first in a series of “Super Region” initiatives that won’t be going our way in the last four years of the Arroyo administration.
Recall how the late FPJ made ‘tambak’ on her in Misamis Oriental, Cagayan de Oro, Iligan and Lanao del Norte during the 2004 presidential elections, so let’s all stop pointing fingers at each other and take our medicine, bitter though it may be for most of us.
Because that’s the impression I get when most everyone in the city council, and local business and government leaders included, seem to have automatically gone into an “Us vs. Them” mode when discussing the controversial MEDCo directive. I squirm in my seat when I think of how many people from further down south are laughing their heads off at the way we’ve turned their initiative into a virtual turf war between the same “boys in the ‘hood.”
The Growth with Equity in Mindanao (GEM) project of USAID’s Infrastructure Group in a policy paper submitted to the infrastructure committee of the Region X Development Council a few years ago previously recommended the management of Cagayan de Oro Baseport and the MCT in Tagoloan, Misamis Oriental as one port system.
Perhaps too much was made of the recommendation to allow the MCT to focus on handling containerized cargo while the Baseport handled break bulk cargo and passenger traffic, so much so that the basic rationale behind the idea was forgotten in the ensuing brouhaha.
Guys, please seriously reconsider how you’re reacting to that piece of paper from MEDCo. Even if it may have sinister undertones as many of you suspect, I’d still be happy if history would judge it to be the spark, or catalyst, if you will, that finally served to wake up people from Cagayan de Oro and Misamis Oriental to realize that they are all part of the same piece of land called Northern Mindanao and not competitors battling against each other for a piece of the pie.
As things stand, many are already making a big thing about the migration of foreign shipping lines to the MCT resulting in foregone revenues estimated to be P35-40 million last year. Tell me, do you seriously believe the business represented by the three foreign shipping lines is lost to Cagayan de Oro in favor of Misamis Oriental?
Excuse me, I’ve lived here for the past 26 years and for all intents and purposes, we’re talking about the same people living in the same piece of real estate, guys! Cagayan de Oro is as much a part of Misamis Oriental as much as Misamis Oriental is a part of Cagayan de Oro. Or if you want to be really specific, let’s limit ourselves to Tagoloan.
You don’t hear Hizzoner crying about the loss of revenue from Cagayan de Oro going to his hometown, have you? I may not agree with a lot of things the Mayor says and does but in this matter, I think he among our many city officials, government bureaucrats and businessmen has taken the most pragmatic approach by not shooting his mouth off over this trivia (which come to think of it, it is).
So please people, partners in development and progress of Cagayan de Oro and Misamis Oriental, let’s not make a big thing about this “toilet paper” and get back to work. Our region has the biggest economy in Mindanao, attracts the biggest investments and has the biggest exports. Let the people from down south do the catching up while w do the leading.
So what if a shipping line or two moves to the MCT? Doesn’t the business it does there ultimately redound to the benefit of Cagayan de Oro and its people? Isn’t the whole of Cagayan de Oro and Misamis Oriental the better because ships dock at either the Baseport or the MCT, or at the Iligan or Ozamiz ports for that matter rather than Davao, Surigao or Zamboanga?
Let’s not allow ourselves to be unwitting pawns in the game to raise radio and TV ratings and sell newspapers. Neither should we allow ourselves to be used to promote the candidacy of those needing media exposure to prop up their bids for a new term in office.
The time is soon coming when the Misamis Oriental towns of Opol, El Salvador, Alubijid and Laguindingan in the west, and Tagoloan, Villanueva and Jasaan in the east would be considered de facto parts of an expanded, progressive Metro Cagayan de Oro. Let’s start getting used to the idea and consider ourselves as one people belonging to one geo-political entity, neither “them” nor “us” but a big “WE.”

That's right. 14 to 16 storey? If I'm the owner I will make it 25 storey, kaya naman yun... ito na kaya yung 320 rooms hotel? kung hindi pa sana yan nalang ang gawin nila para isahan nalang. Kung tutuusin, yung Mallbery Suites na 120 rooms kung sinabay na dito sa 14 to 16 storey na gagawin nila I'm sure aabot na ng 20 plus storey ang maging resulta.
boju March 15th, 2007, 12:39 AM Health & Wellness Industry Holds Great Potential for Coconut Sugar Farmers
By Mike Baños
Balingasag, Misamis Oriental – Better known these days as the hometown of the present provincial governor Oscar Moreno, natives of this town teeming with coconut trees hope pretty soon they can boast of another moniker as the “Coco Sugar Capital” of Misamis Oriental.
Joy Aster Gamolo, product development consultant of Sphyte Global Enterprises, is at the forefront of that aspiration. She is the moving spirit behind an enterprise whose product the Department of Trade and Industry has chosen as the One Town, One Product (OTOP) for Balingasag.
Coconut sugar is produced from the sweet, watery sap that drips from cut flower buds or infloresence of the coconut tree, better known as the source of tuba.
The sap is collected each morning and afternoon by tappers (known locally as managgete who were tuba gatherers in their previous incarnation) and boiled in huge woks known locally as calja until only the coco sugar remains. Each tapper can produce two to four liters a day per coconut tree and the four under the supervision of Merlyn Padua of the Linabo Coconut Planters Association can produce up to eight gallons of sap daily.
During the latest edition of the Quarterly Review of the Economic Situationer for Region 10 hosted by the National Economic Development Authority March 8 in this city, Philippine Coconut Authority Region 10 Manager Luis G. Cruz said recent tests which show a Glycemic Index (GI) of 35 for coconut sugar holds great potential for coconut farmers and investors who can successfully parlay this finding into a successful marketing campaign in the booming health and wellness industry in the U.S.
Dr. Trinidad P. Trinidad, Scientist II of the Food and Nutrition Research Institute – Department of Science and Technology and her research team said in a recent press conference hosted by the PCA that foods with low GI are good for the proper control and management of diabetes mellitus and have been shown to lower cholesterol. It is also good for weight maintenance. GI is the glucose response of an individual from food relative to a standard glucose solution.
The International Diabetes Federation estimates there are now 194 million people worldwide believed to have diabetes as of 2003.Experts project that by 2030, this figure will more than double. An estimated 50% of people worldwide have diabetes but are now aware they have it, and 85% of these have type-2 diabetes.
The Philippines has the10th highest incidence of diabetes worldwide. An estimated six million Filipinos know they have diabetes and another estimated six million who have diabetes but don’t know they have it. Health experts believe many more have impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) and are prone to diabetes.
Mr. Cruz said coconut sugar has great potential as a natural and cheaper alternative for synthetic sweeteners now in the market such as SplendaEqual and the even more expensive sweeteners such as Shugr and Stevia which claim to have been derived from “natural” ingredients. and
Sugar and corn sweeteners, particularly high fructose corn syrup, continue to dominate the overall sweetener market, accounting for over 95 percent of demand in volume terms and more than 85 percent of dollar demand. However, the market for alternative sweeteners has reached $1.1 billion and continues to increase its share of sweetener consumption.
In Asian markets, coconut sugar is already available in India and Thailand although they are used primarily as confectionery sugar for making sweets and desserts.
Oro Chamber President Elpie Paras believes Ms. Gamolo’s budding enterprise is an ideal project for the chamber’s Creation of Opportunities and Resource Management for Enterprises- Partnership Program for Enterprise and Livelihood (CORE-PROPEL) WHICH aims to implement the Barangay Medium Business Enterprise in at least 12 of Misamis Oriental’s 24 towns by 2006-2007.
At present, a kilogram of coco sugar requires around two gallons of coconut sap while a gallon of the so-called coco honey calls for around seven gallons of sap. Present production output from some two hectares of coconut land owned by her family and planted to around 300 hybrid coconut varieties has reached 3.5 metric tons of coconut sugar and 200 five gallon ‘carboys’ of coconut honey which are all snapped up by a buyer in Manila which exports the entire batch. Another product from the same production area is 200 carboys of coconut vinegar which are used by a domestic processing firm in Manila to wash bangus exported to Filipino expat communities in the Middle East.
Ms. Gamolo says she has been developing the production technology for over four years now, starting from the technology available for the PCA where she is a liaison officer for the Misamis Oriental towns of Balingasag, Lagonglong and Salay.
However, to be able to deliver an increased volume of hygienically acceptable products to her buyers in Manila, Ms. Gamolo has set up a new processing facility in her residence at Old Road, Waterfall in Balingasag. In anticipation of increased demand following the latest PCA findings on the suitability of coconut sugar as a cheaper, natural alternative to more expensive synthetic sweeteners, she is now packaging the coco sugar in easy to use sachets like those available in hotels, restaurants and airlines.
The potential for the product looks great. Ms. Gamolo says there are over 30 farmers associations she can immediately tap to increase production if needed.
Latest figures from the PCA show Misamis Oriental alone has 101,698 has. of coconut plantations with some 9,916,852 bearing trees while Northern Mindanao has almost 300,000 has. of coconut plantations with 29,640,923 bearing trees.

by Rubelyn B. Yap/City Information Office
Date Published: 2007-03-13
Finally, the city government has crafted a law that aims to promote and protect the rights of children in Cagayan de Oro.
This after the City Council approved during its regular session Monday, presided by Vice Mayor Michelle Tagarda-Spiers, Ordinance No. 2007-77, otherwise known as the “Comprehensive Children’s Welfare Code of Cagayan de Oro City”. The passage of the children’s welfare code is in line with the city government’s effort and commitment to make Cagayan de Oro as a child-friendly city. Authored by the city council committee on health and social services chaired by City Councilor Simeon V. Licayan, the local code on children will serve as one of the city government’s gift to the city’s children and their children’s children. The local code on children laid out the city government’s policies and principles which recognize the vital role of children in the city’s holistic development and nation-building as a whole. It also manifested the city government’s commitment to protect the children against all forms of neglect, abuse, cruelty and exploitation, and other condition prejudicial to their development. The salient points of the local code on children are the city government’s assurance to uphold and protect the children’s rights on survival, development, participation and protection. Under the survival and development rights of children, the city government laid down policies to implement primary health care program; make early childhood, elementary and secondary education available and accessible to every child; and establish day care centers and a youth rehabilitation center. The city’s code on children also mandates the representation of children in the City Council for the Protection of Children (CCPC) and the Barangay Council for the Protection of Children (BCPC), and the consultation of national government agencies prior to the implementation of national projects in terms of its impact on children. The new law on children also expressed the city government’s commitment to ensure special protection of children who are sexually exploited and prostituted; victims of child trafficking, child labor and other acts of neglect, abuse, cruelty or exploitation detrimental to the child’s development; children in conflict with the law; street children; and abandoned and neglected children.
boju March 15th, 2007, 12:53 AM Mayor Emano to award land titles to 193 farmers tomorrow
by Sandra B. Tadeo/City Information Office
Date Published: 2007-03-14
City Mayor Vicente Y. Emano and key officials from the regional office of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR)-10 are set award land titles to 193 farmers in barangay Bayanga tomorrow, March 15, 2007.
Engr. Emmanuel Abejuela, City Local Environment and Natural Resources Office (CLENRO) officer-in-charge disclosed that a total of 353 hectares of land situated in Sitios Midkiwan, Balogwa, Monigue and Hawaii, all in Barangay Bayanga will be given to the members of the Integrated Social Forestry Farmers Association tomorrow. Abejuela said that the 193 farmers who will receive their land titles under the Handog Titulo Program have been tilling their land for more than 50 years with some of them inheriting the land from their elders. He added that with the awarding of their respective land titles, the beneficiaries will no longer worry about their security of land tenure and that they would be living at peace in the land that they have been tilling for decades. Meanwhile, Mayor Emano said that the awarding of land titles to the poor farmers in barangay Bayanga tomorrow is inline with the city gpvernment’s thrust to promote social justice among the landless farmers in the city. “No person should be denied of his just share of the land of his birth,” Mayor Emano pointed out. Under the city government’s program to ensure security of land tenure among landless farmers, it has awarded a total of 15, 773 hectares of forest land which assured a total of 3,382 poor farmers security of land tenure for 25 years and renewable every 25 years thereafter. Another 374 farmers were issued stewardship contracts covering a forest land area of 448.5 hectares while another 235 farmers have already received their land titles under the Handog sa Titulo Program covering a total of 285.45 hectares of land.

Emano may declare 'free zone'
By Danilo V. Adorador III
CONFOUNDED with the intricacies of selecting his party's congressional slate, Cagayan de Oro Mayor Vicente Emano said he may break the "standard bearer" rule and declare a sona libre (free-zone).
Opening up free zones for the congressional post will liberate him from the burden of choosing official candidates, whose selection process was made complicated with the slew of "equally qualified" aspirants to select from, Emano said.
Cagayan de Oro's lone district has recently been broken into two--apparently not enough to please PaDayon's half-a-dozen aspirants.
Emano, founder and head of the indigenous Padayon Pilipino party (PaDayon), which is allied with Malacañang, made it clear, however, that his mind was not yet made up on the matter.
He said he was exploring the idea because PaDayon's growing list of congressional aspirants presents a dilemma he has never experienced in his entire political career.
"All of them are qualified and this presents a big headache for me," he said in a dialect during his regular weekly radio program at Bombo Radyo Thursday.
In addition, the mayor is also faced with another political conundrum: PaDayon also has a long list of mayoral hopefuls as Emano is serving his final term.
He did not say, however, if the free zone extends to the mayoral post--if his plan pushes through.
Although PaDayon commands superior machinery, the party's logistical edge would diminish under a free-zone strategy, said several PaDayon members who were interviewed by this paper.
"I think the mayor would stick to just one candidate. Having two or more bets in one position would already stretch our base," said one PaDayon member who requested anonymity lacking clearance to speak on the matter.
Emano himself appeared to favor that idea, saying that a candidate's ability to win would factor much to the selection process. In a periodically updated survey, the mayor said he already know the frontrunners, but declined to name names.
He also said while choosing one over the other would be difficult--saying he equally maintains high esteem to all aspirants--but the recalcitrant were free to walk away from the party.
PaDayon's leading aspirants for the two congressional seats are: Councilors Jose Benjamin Benaldo, Maryanne Enteria, Annie Daba; ex-councilor Ramon Tabor and Carmen Barangay Chairman Rolando Uy. The list includes several unnamed congressional aspirants who attended Wednesday's meeting.
For mayor, the contenders include Vice Mayor Michelle Spiers, Councilors Alexander Dacer, Juan Sia, Reynaldo Advincula and outgoing Representative Constantino Jaraula.
Emano said he was considering between running for vice mayor and retiring from politics at once. He ruled out any possible run in Congress.

Diaz: The myth of Mindanao candidates
By Cris Diaz
MINDANAO is the second largest island in the Philippines. Its area covers more than 36,000 square kilometers.
Divided into five regions, Mindanao comprises 26 provinces to include the island provinces of Camiguin, Saranggani, Basilan and Jolo.
The island is a mixture of ethnic diversity with a population of more than 16 million people. A predominantly Christian island, Islam is also a major religion in few of the island's provinces.
By far, Mindanao is one of the country's major sources of mineral ores, agriculture, marine products and staple food.
Yet, Mindanao is one of the most neglected islands in the country. The other is the island province of Samar, the third largest in the Philippines.
No doubt, people in Mindanao often considered themselves second class citizens of their country.
There is apparent discrimination of Mindanao people than those of people from Luzon. No amount of argument can belie this observation.
Matter of fact, Mindanao's representation with the national government is only a cameo role.
Where is the so-called "Mindanao votes?" Political analyst believed that a solid Mindanao vote is enough to elect a President.
On the contrary, it is sad that Mindanao electorates had been electing the island's candidates who do not sincerely fight for the island's aspirations.
More often than not, elected Mindanao representatives in Congress and the Senate are indifferent to the plight of their own people.
We have witnessed Mindanao solons who never-care-less about the plight of the people in Mindanao.
We have elected some illustrious public officials from Mindanao to the Senate and Congress of the Philippines but, unfortunately, we never feel their presence in our hearts and minds. They're only good at gobbledygook!
It is also very disturbing for Mindanao to be historically overshadowed by a miniature island of Bohol in central Philippines as one of its sons was elected President of the Philippines. Carlos P. Garcia, of Talibon, Bohol was elected President in 1957.
Mindanao almost had its first President when Emmanuel Pelaez was elected Vice President.
But after Pelaez, nothing comes so close than Teofisto Guingona who became Vice President when Gloria Arroyo was catapulted to power in 2001 midway to President Joseph Estrada's six-year term.
This year, the Senatorial and local elections are scheduled in middle of May. Again, we observed a gross misrepresentation from Mindanao's aspiring Senators.
The opposition had "Koko" Pimentel in their line-up. Pimentel, a bar topnotcher, is son of incumbent Senator Aquilino Pimentel who has his roots in Mindanao.
But after having been elected senator, Pimentel is seldom seen in Mindanao particularly in Cagayan de Oro City, his supposed hometown.
The young "Koko" Pimentel is also a stranger in Cagayan de Oro City. In the 2001 local elections where "Koko" ran for mayor in Cagayan de Oro City and lost, people criticized him for his inability to speak the Bisayan vernacular fluently. Koko though finished his law school in a downtown university in Cagayan de Oro City.
The administration has three senatorial candidates, Prospero Pichay of Surigao, Miguel Zubiri of Bukidnon and Sultan Kiram of Jolo, all from Mindanao.
This early, however, these candidates are already known losers!

Palace pushing halt on Oro port expansion
By Danilo V. Adorador III
A GOVERNMENT economic agency denied it was pushing for the curtailment of the Cagayan de Oro Port expansion, saying this was not the agency's brainchild but Malacañang's.
The plan--part of a multi-pronged strategy to create super regions in Mindanao--has raised serious concerns from local officials who said it was bad for the city's economy.
Pinoy Votes: Sun.Star Election 2007 Coverage
It fist came to the City Council's attention when Cagayan de Oro port manager Efren Bollozos requested the body's comment on the plan--detailed in a letter addressed to the Philippine Ports Authority (PPA)--early this month.
Virgilio Leyretana Sr., chairman of the Mindanao Economic Development Council (Medco) who sent the communication, reminded PPA General Manager Oscar Sevilla of the Mindanao Super Region Strategy--which includes, among others, limiting the "interventions on the Cagayan de Oro Port Development Project to port rehabilitation to avoid competition with the port being operated by Phividec."
In a letter to the City Council, Cagayan de Oro port manager Efren B. Bollozos said the plan "could stall" the current port expansion projects and its resulting cost on transport may be inimical to the city's investment mood.
That ruffled feathers among local officials, who said any interference in the current port expansion project could undermine the port's efficiency amid increasing calls and burgeoning cargo traffic.
Councilors Simeon Licayan and Ian Mark Nacaya, heads of the transportation and public utility committees, said the plan violates free enterprise principles and vowed to oppose it.
Nacaya and Licayan said if the bulk of the ports shipping businesses relocate to the Phividec port, the accompanying additional transport cost and other productivity losses would be passed on to the public.
Vice Mayor Michelle Spiers said the plan smacks of unintelligent economics. She said port-users should be given freedom to choose between the two harbors, which has the best service and the least cost to them.
Responding to this, Leyretana in a letter told Bollozos early this week, washed his hands on the issue, saying it was not Medco's move but Malacañang's.
He said the move was "derived from specific directives and guidelines of the President during a cabinet meeting" late last year.
He did not, however, refute the arguments pointing to the plan's negative economic impact to Cagayan de Oro.
The Super Region Strategy calls for the prioritized developments of major transport hubs in Mindanao, including the Laguindingan International Airport and the Mindanao Container Port inside the Phividec industrial zone.

Making it at Bigby's
If you are in Iloilo City, you must hie off to Bigby’s Café & Restaurant at the Smallville Business Center and order a Titanic Treat. It’s a magic mountain of ice cream scoops—all 40 of them!—with a sinful smattering of chocolate chips, moist chocolate cake, chocolate cookies and whatever fruits are on hand. A glacial treat! “It’s a great way to melt away hot afternoons,” says pretty Joanna Lim-Yu, one of the three 28-year-olds who run this hot, hot restaurant.
Hot is the word, indeed, and Bigby’s is the place. Who would have known that it would take a tiny restaurant like this to put Northern Mindanao on the country’s cosmopolitan culinary map? The story goes that Glenda Barreto, the doyenne of the Philippine food scene, hied off to Bigby’s and promptly fell in love with the restaurant’s tijuana quesadillas, a fresh, light take on the classic Mexican pica-pica. The flour tortilla is deliciously burnt and crunchy and manageably thin—and perks you up with that wicked mishmash of cheese and garlic, which you may spice up with a dash of salsa. Mama mia!
For his part, gourmand and restaurateur Sandy Daza was so enamored by Bigby’s that he wrote about the restaurant in his Saturday column in the Philippine Daily Inquirer. Now, salad foodies will turn green with envy at the freshness of the offering at Bigby’s: the harvest of the land crisp and plentiful. The house salad is aptly called Bermuda Triangle Salad, but the one you must try is the Mandarin Oriental Salad, a mix of mandarin oranges, a delicious concoction of sweet vegetable mix and topped with crispy vermicelli! And that’s not even the entrees yet.
Most everyone who goes to Bigby’s orders the playfully named Rack-a-Bye-Baby. It’s pork ribs glistening in barbecued perfection. Believe me, it’s fabulous value-for-money. Others go for the Korean Riblets, a sinful bowl of beef ribs tender with sweet and spicy imagining, which I thoroughly enjoy. There are steaks of all sorts—porterhouse, T-bone and rib-eye. Then, there are mischievous chicken and seafood experiments, which are highly successful (Indian Seafood Kebabs and Chix Ahoy, for instance).
May I confess, though, that the entree which keeps me coming back to Bigby’s is the Pescado Al Fresco. To say that it’s “sauteed Cream Dory fillet with pesto in a pool of onion jus” is to miss the point, although it is that exactly—drowned in a crunchy sea of shredded shoestring potato. Because you see, it is more than that.
This simple dish with nuanced flavors swims into your palate as a celebration of joy, of bounty, of good taste, of fine dining, of creative exploration, of companionable bonding: a coming together of spirited intentions.
Bigby’s interiors is of wood panels and clear glass and woodsy tables and chairs, very cozy and comfy, very relaxed. On one wall, is a mask collection; on another, a pin collection and puppets from Bangkok, framed en toto, and stamp collections. It is truly a visual treat!
Bottomless
The best way to wash off such a feast is to order the bottomless, especially brewed house iced tea. It’s a thirst-quencher whose honey-slaking goodness lingers long after the last bite, or burp.
“We made sure our food gives diners a wonderful high,” says sultry Catherine Genabe, who, together with Henrik Yu, completes the young triumvirate running Bigby’s. Cathy, Henrik and Ann were all schoolmates. Even then, Cathy and Ann would bake and sell banana cake, butter cake and carrot cake in school. At the end of the day, they would eat the cakes that were not sold.
Ann studied business management and psychology under the interdisciplinary studies program at the Ateneo de Manila University. Henrik snatched up a degree in economics there, too, while Cathy pursued dentistry studies. “But I found myself enrolling at the Center for Culinary Arts across the road from the Ateneo, and that has made all the difference,” Cathy lets on. Ann enrolled there, too. And the three realized that there was only one way to go: Open their own restaurant. “It had to be hip—a cool hangout for young folks like us,” Cathy recalls. Grins Doy, “The taste of the food had to be outstanding, and the servings had to be impressive.” Says Ann, “We thought the place should be unique, with a character all its own, that will draw people to come back again and again.”
Such a playful, creative team-up makes for the big success that is Bigby’s.
Bigby’s can be found at the Ayala Entertainment Center Cebu, SM City Cagayan de Oro, SM City Davao, Limketkai Center Cagayan de Oro, Gaisano Mall Bacolod and of course, now at the Smallville Business Center, Iloilo City. Tel. No. (033)3211275. Services offered: Free Wifi access, Function room for meetings, Dine-in and Take-out orders, and much, much more.

The reason why the Palace wants to halt Cagayan de Oro's Booming Growth is beyond my comprehension. :bash:
Anyway, no force can ever stop the growth of CDeO, MisOr or Northern Mindanao because demand dictates that these places will serve as the Trade & Services Center for Mindanao:banana:

Agency cites region's gains
LOCAL officials said the country's economy will survive with flying colors, alongside strong growth and social payback to the poor.
"This, as the guarantee of economic and political stability has become much stronger today with the fundamental driving confidence in the Philippines and the full fledged democratic campaign leading to clean and orderly polls in May," Regional Director Myra V. Balandra of the National Economic and Development authority (NEDA)-Northern Mindanao said.
Pinoy Votes: Sun.Star Election 2007 Coverage
Citing some of these social payback projects, Balandra said financial support was made available to various productive activities in the region, last year, as some P196.959 million was released by Quedancor to 4,703 beneficiaries under its different loan programs to augment the income of farmers and fisherfolks.
The Land Bank of the Philippines (LBP), on the other hand, has released Php2.185 billion in various loans under the Small Farmers/Fihserfolks Loan facility.
The Development Bank of the Philippines (DBP) also provided financial support to different sectoral projects, releasing P300 million for Small and Medium Enterprises (SME) and agribusiness projects, P35 million for construction of school buildings, P40 million for transportation networks and P539.6 million for water projects.
Likewise, Balandra said the cooperative sector have also become a strong conduit for financing as 68 percent out of 1,176 operating cooperatives were engaged in micro-financing with a volume of business at Php4.121 billion.
A total of P5.9 billion worth of economic activities that brought about 4,806 jobs was generated by the operating cooperatives all over the region and that out of the top 100 cooperatives nationwide, 11 are from Northern Mindanao.
Revenue
Meanwhile, the region's science and technology (ST) sector continued to make significant impact regionwide with a total of 58 firms given direct assistance under the technology transfer and commercialization program of the Dept. of Science and Technology (Dost).
Balandra said P2.616 million in direct investment, with 32 percent equity from the client cooperators who are mostly from the private sector were generated by technology transfer alone resulting in the employment of about 6,544 man-months and gross revenue of P124.598 million.
Again, some 1,063 trainees were benefited from 36 trainings conducted by DOST while scholarships were provided to 127 qualifiers or 9.3 percent of the 1,371 examinees, she said.
Also, last year, the Department of Education (DepEd) constructed 19 classrooms and repaired 1,712 others in the elementary level while it constructed 24 classrooms and repaired 252 others in the secondary level.
"Aside from government funds, some classrooms were funded by private initiatives such as the overseas Filipino workers (OFW) through the "Classroom Galing sa Mamamayang Filipino Abroad with Camiguin, Lanao del Norte and Misamis Oriental as recipients.
Various programs were implemented for out-of-school youths and adults like the Alternative Learning Program (ALP), Basic Literacy Program (BLP) and the Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET), among others.
As of year-end, over Php29 million was disbursed by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) out of Php35million scholarship funds for the region that benefited more than 5,000 students regionwide.
Likewise, placement and referrals were pursued to ensure employment and productivity among the 6,170 TVET graduates of the region," Balandra added. (Trends)

FINDING the need for the continued development of the city’s port in Macabalan to effectively serve the growing transportation requirements, the City Council committee on public utilities chaired by Councilor Ian Mark Nacaya endorsed the passage of a resolution requesting the Department of Transportation and Communications (DOTC) and the Office of the President supporting moves to upgrade the wharf. The committee on Tuesday invited to a meeting the port management and representatives of the different shipping lines to tackle reports regarding alleged moves to limit the port’s expansion program. OCCUPANCY RATEPort official Noel Tan informed the committee that the port occupancy rate has already reached 72-percent. He explained that this is already way above the 65-percent occupancy rate threshold standards.Tan said the development of the port is necessary to cater to increasing port users. It was lerned that prior to the implementation of the wharf expansion, the last expansion project of the port took place in 1986.The port official noted that it took 20 years for the development to take place even as he expressed concern that any moves to limit programs to port rehabilitation will adversely affect efforts to lure more investors here. Tan pointed out that the opening of the Mindanao Container Terminal at the Phivedec area in Tagoloan, Misamis Oriental did not lessen the occupancy rate at the Macabalan port.He told the committee that although three of its former users are now docking at the MCT, three new shipping lines have replaced these at the port and more are still coming."There are indications that another two foreign shipping vessels will be using the port by May," he explained, saying this will be on top of the 72-percent occupancy rate.Representatives of different shipping lines and shippers also indicated their support for the development and not just rehabilitation of the port.Philippine Shipping Liners Association (PSLA), CDO chapter representative noted that much has yet to be done at the port on the passenger and cargo facilities. Thus, any hindrance to development of the port will result in congestion and forestall economic growth."Limiting development is a narrow foresight over opportunity," one representative added. (LCR)

Noynoy outlines Mindanao programs
By Danilo V. Adorador III
GENUINE Opposition (GO) senatorial candidate Benigno "Noynoy" Aquino was in a whirlwind campaign tour Friday in Cagayan de Oro, where he spelled his development plans for Mindanao.
If elected into office, Aquino, who belongs to the Liberal Party, said he will give emphasis on Mindanao's agricultural development, saying the island's natural resources can be turned into an export powerhouse.
Pinoy Votes: Sun.Star Election 2007 Coverage
Aquino also spoke to college students and urged young voters to support GO candidates, especially young contenders such as Representatives Francis Escudero and Allan Peter Cayetano.
"The growing dissatisfaction over our political system and the clamor for genuine reforms among young Filipinos will determine the winners of this election," he said.
He cited a mock election of the government-run Social Security System (SSS) where young GO candidates emerged as frontrunners.
Speaking to the local media, Aquino laid out his Mindanao platforms, which concentrated on improving the island's economy.
To do this, he said transportation and communications should be developed, while helping the agriculture sector compete in the international markets.
Specifically, Aquino said he will push for the development of the processed coconut oil industry, noting that Mindanao is one of the largest coconut-producing regions in the country.
The fisheries sector, he said, was also one area that should be developed to boost the food processing industry in the island.
Aquino was accompanied by partymate Bukidnon Representative Nereus Acosta who is running against the incumbent Bukidnon Governor Jose Marias Zubiri, and lawyer Bong Montesa who is the Liberal Party's candidate for Cagayan de Oro's first congressional district.

Cagayan De Oro City — A growing number of extreme sports enthusiasts are trooping down south to test their wits and wills against the white water of the Cagayan de Oro River.

A 65-foot waterfall-river rappel — Photos by the author
As the country’s first and only year-round white-water rafting destination, perhaps it’s only appropriate that this city and the region to which it is a part of lay claim to the title of "The Extreme Sports Capital of the Philippines."
There are three destinations worth mentioning that are within easy reach of the casual visitor or hard core X-sport fanatics.
Adventuresome visitors will do well to take a crack at the Makahambus Adventure Park. Just 25 minutes from the city proper and 10 minutes from the Lumbia airport, Indiana Jones wannabes can cross a 120-meter-long sky bridge 150 feet off the ground spanning centuries-old trees to admire the view of the spectacular Makahambus Gorge from various perspectives.
If that doesn’t get your adrenaline flowing, rappel 120 feet down the gorge or brave the 120-meter "Slide-for-Life" Zip Line for only P500 for the whole package, or P300 for either skybridge and zipline, or rappelling only.
Makahambus Hill has a hallowed place in Philippine history. Here local hero Apolinar Velez led the Mindanao Battalion to victory over the Americans in the Battle of Makahambus Hill on June 4, 1900 — the only Filipino victory over the US forces in Mindanao during the Philippine-American War.
Going down the Maharlika National Highway and turning right through to the Gardens of Malasag Eco-Tourism Village, lies a 2,490-hectare forest reserve developed by the late vice-president Emmanuel Pelaez, a mere 30 minutes away from the city proper. It includes a cattle ranch, a forest reserve and the Mapawa Nature Park.
Your P40 entrance fee will buy you access to the park’s extreme sports attractions which include a six-stage zipline course that costs P250 per head, though you can also limit yourself to the first three stages including a 60-meter zipline, a 25-meter monkey bridge, and 70 ft. zip and 13 ft. rappel for only P125 per person.
Or try the more advanced second stage with a 100-meter zipline and 100-meter zip return for only P100 per head and take your option of a 40-feet rappel at P50 per head or 100-meter zipline and 40-foot rappel for P150. You can also give their trampoline a try — it’s only P25 per head for 10 minutes of totally inane or totally entertaining activity.
Or you can go horseback riding through the 2,000-hectare reforestation area for only P75 per head for a 15-minute trail ride to P175 per head for one hour, free riding instruction included. There’s also a three-hour trail ride to the park’s 55-foot waterfalls or two-hour cowboy trail through the cattle pasture.
You can also coordinate with the management for a variety of team-building activities including greasy pig catching, palo sebo (greased pole climbing), a cattle wrestling show, an ecological trek, an obstacle course, bonfire or camping (day or night). The park has amenities that include view decks, picnic tables, a camping ground where you can pitch your tents (day or night, minimum 12 persons at P100 each), light a bonfire, or go for a dip in the swimming hole.
http://www.bworldonline.com/Weekender031607/photos/tesi.jpg
Senatorial bet Tessie Aquino Oreta tries the monkey bridge.
But for that truly unforgettable Xperience, take their river trekking and canyoneering package, your personal epic saga which starts at 7 a.m. and ends at 3 p.m., for only P950/head (minimum of five persons) inclusive of bottled water, snacks, packed lunch, trek guides, mountaineering equipment and life vests.
That may sound pretty steep but consider the following X-treme Adventure: you start off with a 30-minute ride on a trailer pulled by a farm tractor while being briefed on the reforestation project. At the drop-off, your group takes a 15-minute trek downhill to the river where you all don life vests for a screaming waterslide down a 25-foot natural waterfall, followed by a 30-foot jump from another waterfall and a rappel down a 65-foot waterfall. After lunch, you can either trek back to the trailer or ride back to the park on horseback (this costs extra though). Or you can camp out in the park or stay overnight at the ranch with bed and breakfast, though prior arrangements for this are necessary.
But if all that’s still too tame for you, then it’s the DOME Expedition Tours by Detour you are looking for. This includes the famous Noslek Canopy Walk in Claveria, Misamis Oriental, and an option of spelunking in Kweba de Oro (Cave of Gold) in Barangay Lumbia or Pinoy white-water rafting using lashed salbabidas (inner tubes).
Definitely not for the fainthearted, you start off the first day of your weekend adventure with an hourlong trek from Magbais, Mati in Claveria to reach the access deck where you will be fitted with a safety harness for your walk in the clouds 3,500 feet above the sea level and 24 to 36 meters above ground. Your adventure starts with a 40-meter zipline to the first view deck and it will all be hanging "monkey" bridges from there on in. From your vantage point above the forest canopy, you will have a bird’s eye view of the virgin forest in a watershed that’s been declared an eco-tourism zone. On your way back, you have the option of a cold dip in the pristine waters of a natural pool with a small waterfall or take a walk upriver to see more such pools and waterfalls.
The next day, it’s two hours spent spelunking through the Kweba de Oro, which includes a 110-foot rappel down to the cave entrance and a two-hour trek inside the cave following an underground stream through a cavern festooned with stalagmites and stalactites. After lunch, you get up close and personal with the mighty Cagayan River with Pinoy white-water rafting. It’s all fun, no fear, with rafters as young as two and as old as 70 having previously made the trip. You will navigate 6.4 kilometers of the Cagayan River with 14 rapids decked out with safety helmets and life vests provided by your outfitter.

Hanging by a zipline
The nifty thing about DOME’s Expedition Tours is the convenience of being able to arrive by plane on the first flight from Manila, going to either the canopy walk or spelunking and Pinoy rafting in the afternoon, and having enough time left to make it back home on the last flight around 5:30 p.m.
The canopy walk will set you back P1,933 per head for a minimum of three people, but the rate goes down to P800 per for a group of 10. A half-day of tubing would cost you P900 per head and P1,500 for a full-day. Spelunking at the Kweba de Oro ranges from P1,717 for a group of three to as low as P760 for a group of 10.
Of course, for the ultimate adrenaline rush, few can match the thrill and adventure of a day’s white-water rafting in the Cagayan River.
Most of the six "outfitters" offer two types of runs: the beginners or amateur course runs 12.9 kilometers with 14 Class 2 and 3 rapids and lasts 3.5 hours including side trips, while the advanced or extreme/expert course is longer at 18.6 kilometers and can take up to five hours with 14 Class 2 to 4 rapids.
The beginners course costs P900 per person (minimum of five persons) and includes a cavern side trip, jeepney transfer to the rafting area from the Park Cafe in this city’s Plaza Divisoria, a briefing on rafting, provision of safety and protection equipment, river and rescue guides, and a fresh shower and a change of clothes at the disembarkation point. The longer expert/advanced course costs P1,300 per person, minimum of five in a group, with much of the same amenities.
Rafters are provided with safety and protection equipment including a certified rafting helmet, a life vest certified for white-water sports, a paddle which can also serve as a safety tool in emergencies, and throw bags with ropes with which a dunked passenger can be hauled in from up to 10 meters away by rescuers.
Additional safety measures include the deployment of a rescue raft manned by two experienced river guides with every run, a first aid kit, and an emergency rescue vehicle which can bring any accident victim to the nearest hospital in 20-25 minutes.
Rafters are advised to wear comfortable close fitting shirts, preferably quick-dry; short pants, preferably light and quick drying; and strap-on sandals or aqua shoes. Other mandatory items experienced rafters bring along are extra clothes and underwear, a towel, swimsuit and sunscreen.

tough March 19th, 2007, 03:51 PM Asean Horticulture Produce meet to be held in CDO
by RG Alama
Davao City (19 March) -- The Bureau of Agriculture and Fisheries Product Standards (BAFPS) will be holding its third Meeting of the Task Force on the ASEAN Standards for Horticulture Produce (MASHP) at the Xavier Sports and Country Club, in Cagayan de Oro City on March 20-22, 2007.
The project operates on networking arrangements among the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) countries with the overarching concern of ensuring high-quality horticultural products, protecting consumers, facilitating trade of horticultural commodities and promoting cooperation among ASEAN countries.
This is the last leg of the three-year series where the Philippines was tasked to host. Last year’s meet was held in Cebu City and was participated by various ASEAN countries like Thailand, Vietnam, Myanmar, Malaysia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Singapore, Cambodia and Brunei.
The meet is very timely since the country will be pushing further its international markets for four fruit standards namely in lansium, guava, mangosteen and watermelon.
It is hoped that important issues associated with the harmonization of standards to be discussed will eventually improved product standards that will gain market access locally and also in the ASEAN and other international markets. (PIA)

Council passes women's law
By Danilo V. Adorador III
THE City Council Monday passed the long-awaited codified law that seeks to safeguard women's rights and calls for a mainstream gender development initiative.
In passing the landmark Women's Development Code, Cagayan de Oro joined the ranks of local government units (LGUs) that have enacted specific legislation aimed at addressing women's welfare.
The law, which will come into effect before the month ends, integrates local statutes, provisions in the Republic Act 7192 otherwise known as Women in Development and Nation Building Act, and the United Nations (UN) Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Discrimination Against Women (UNCEDAW).
It calls for a broader participation of women in the city's policy-making bodies, grassroots capability programs to improve women's livelihood and security, creation of shelters and intervention centers for abused women, and promotion of a gender-sensitive media, educational system and working environment.
It also spelled out the acts constituting violence against women, such as trafficking, battering, sexual abuses, domestic violence and pedophilia, and guarantees a woman's rights against forced sterilization and abortion, and protects women in armed conflict situations.
Even acts are punishable under the law, such as "persistent telling" of green jokes, display of lewd photos in the workplace and taunting a woman "with constant talk about sex and sexual intercourse."
Lighter acts such as "staring or leering maliciously," or making offensive hand or body gestures" at a woman are also considered sexual harassment.
Section 22 of the law provides that survivors of cruel acts--such as domestic violence--will be provided with legal and medical services and their cases investigated within 24-hours from the time the offense occurred.
A Gender Development Program Office will be created to implement women-related programs and monitor compliance among government agencies and all sectors in the community.
The passage of the women's code capped years of legislative rigmarole, which saw local women organizations participating in crafting important provisions and lobbying for its eventual approval.
Councilor Maryanne Enteria, one of the ordinance's co-authors, said the women's code hopes to contribute "for a stronger family, a healthy community and the over-all advancement of women's rights."
The law is authored by Councilor Alfonso Goking, chairman of the women's welfare committee.

Fare hike tops regional summit
FARE reduction and other pressing transport issues will be discussed in Wednesday's regional transport summit, the head of the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) in Northern Mindanao said.
LTFRB Chairman Thompson Lantion will grace the event, which will take place at Pryce Plaza, said LTFRB Regional Director Mandangan Darimbang.
Darimbang said the summit was expected to gather around 100 transport stakeholders in Northern Mindanao, in a forum where all issues surrounding the public transport industry will directly be addressed by Lantion himself.
It will also be a venue for LTFRB to explain its regulatory powers to transport entities, including the agency's accomplishments, he said.
Last year, Darimbang said LTFRB-Northern Mindanao garnered awards and accolades having topped nationwide in terms of performance and punctuality in submitting organizational reports.
The year 2006 also saw an increase of the agency's income by as much as 127 percent, or P39,400,793 from the P19,171,444 in 2005.
It also processed 37,624 petitions and applications last year, of which 36,176 were acted.
Lantion was expected to receive the petitions for fare reduction from transport groups in the region, after LTFRB last year approved the provisional 50-centavo fare reduction in the National Capital Region (NCR) and Regions III and IV. (DVAIII and JPN)

boju March 21st, 2007, 02:26 PM http://www.raftingcdo.com/Classification/images/Classification_03.jpg
Whitewater rapids are rated on a scale of one through six, indicating the difficulty of each rapid at "normal" water level. The scale is a subjective one. While rapids are individually classed, rivers are given an overall classification that takes the whole stretch of river into account. As an example, the wilderness section of the Cagayan de Oro River has lots of Class IV rapids, but the overall classification is Class III and III+, indicating that a rafter with strong Class III skills would find the challenges within his/her abilities.
Class I: (very easy) Generally, fast moving water. Waves and riffles are small or nonexistent, passages are clear with few or no obstacles, and little manuevering is required. Lazy floating.
Class II: (easy to moderate) Small-to-medium-sized regular waves with some obstacles. Some manuevering is required but passages are clear. Spashy and fun!
Class III: (moderate to exciting) Numerous waves that are bigger and a bit irregular with currents that can be tricky. Obstacles require maneuvering, but the narrow passages are generally straightforward. Scouting from shore is recommended and usually required. Big splashes and exciting rides!
Class IV: (exciting) Longer rapids with powerful waves and strong currents. The passages are boulder-choked and require precise maneuvering. Scouting from shore is mandatory. Exciting and challenging for all.
Class V: (difficult) Massive waves and violent rapids, often following each otherwithout interruption. Big drops, violent currents, and extemely congested channels that require complex maneuvering. Scouting is mandatory but often difficult. This is maximum intensity rafting! Cagayan de Oro River Tours does not run trips at this level of difficulty.
Class VI: (the limit of navigation) Rarely run, or generally considered unrunnable; a definite hazard to life and limb. Cagayan de Oro River Tours does not run trips at this dangerous level of difficulty.

Sera March 21st, 2007, 11:53 PM Jeeps to charge P6
THE .50 centavo provisional fare reduction for public utility jeepneys (PUJ) in Northern Mindanao has been approved, but will end on July this year.
Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) Chairman Thompson Lantion said this during the regional transport summit in Cagayan de Oro Wednesday, attended by around a hundred stakeholders of the region's transport industry.
When the provisional decrease--which brings the current PUJ fare to P6 flat--expires on July 31, Lantion said it was up to the transport groups in the region to decide whether an extension was necessary.
Fuel price, he said, remains the barometer for any changes in fare amount.
Virgilio Valmoria, leader of the moderate Transport Federation of Cagayan de Oro (Trafeco), said his group supports extending the deadline, citing no new changes in fuel prices as of press time.
Councilor Ian Mark Nacaya, chairman of the City Council committee on public utility, welcomed the move, but urged LTFRB to assess whether a new round of fare reduction would be possible.
"I think the .50 reduction is fair. However, if the prices of oil continue to decrease, then LTFRB should again consider lowering the fare rate," Nacaya told Sun.Star Cagayan de Oro in a text message.
The councilor recalled that the City Council had asked LTFRB twice to lower PUJ fare rates in response to slowly stabilizing fuel prices in the recent months.
Fare reduction on other transport utilities such as buses and taxicabs would be tackled in the coming days, said LTFRB Northern Mindanao Regional Director Mandangan Darimbang.
The fare reduction also covers the 20 percent discount granted to students and senior citizens, bringing their fare to only P5. (DVA and JPN)

Sacred Heart in strong Palaro showing
TUBOD, Lanao Norte -- Winning by 20 points or more, COAA's basketball teams in elementary and secondary levels come out as the hands-down pick to win the hardcourt showdown in the Regional Palaro at the Mindanao Civic Center.
Xavier University Grade School dribblers made up the biggest bulk of COAA's team in elementary basketball, while Sacred Heart of Jesus Montessori School solidified its secondary cast.
"Sure na kanang duha nato sa basketball. Wala nay makapugong sa ila," said Cosaa frontman Boboy Sabal who came here in his capacity as assistant head of delegation to Fely T. Yu representing the fraction of private schools out from the Prisaa.
The SHJMS wards of coach Boy Dacoco hardly missed the 6-foot-4 presence of Philip Paredes as they made mincemeat of their first three opponents.
Against Iligan Wednesday afternoon, COAA won by 58-31 margin.
"Dili pa gihapon makakumpiyansa kay lig-on sab ang Misor, Misocc and host Lanao sa pikas bracket," said Dacoco.
Paredes was not able to join the team due to a restraining school obligation.
"Our team may not need him here pero sa Palarong Pambansa if ever kami ang madala importante gyod siya," Dacoco said of Paredes.
COAA's team in elementary is composed of Jason Abao, Michael Akut, Raul Coronia, Angelo Galeon, Simon Peter La Victoria, Niel William Malagar, Marc Malferari, Kim Romulo Paza, Jazriel Rhys Vallente, Dan Jason Tubo, Rhys Jefferson Flores, John Sabio and Reoben Daclan.
Comprising the junior team are Philip Pamawagan, Raymund Penalosa, Patrick Sabio, Christopher Gue, Maxam Barillo, Gabriel Nicholas Reyes, Richard Kwong, Roberto Tamparong, Bonn John Orquiza, Felix Emmanuel Pupos and Edgim Lloyd Balabis. (Lynde Salgados)

Sera March 22nd, 2007, 01:33 AM CAGAYAN DE ORO: GATEWAY TO MINDANAO'S BIGGEST ECONOMY
-Cagayan de Oro is the Regional Center of Region X. Northern Mindanao remains to be the biggest regional economy in Mindanao contributing 27 percent to the island's total output in 2006. Northern Mindanao had the biggest GRDP (Gross Regional Domestic Product) in Mindanao for the 3rd year in a row and continues to secure itself as the Trade/Services hub this part of the country. Cagayan de Oro is one of the main components of the Cagayan de Oro-Iligan Corridor and being the Premier City of the Biggest Economy of Mindanao the city is truly at the forefront of Mindanao's Bright Future.

Agency issues nurses review
By Lizanilla J. Amarga
DESPITE contentions that any leakage to the controversial June 2006 Nursing Licensure Exam did not reach Mindanao, thus all successful passers be spared from any retake, the regional office of the Department of Labor and Employment (Dole) said they will administer a special review and voluntary re-take of the equivalent tests here.
A special review will be offered free and paid for by the government while the voluntary re-take examinations are slated for June and December 2007.
The registration for enrollment of review classes to be held at Xavier University-College of Nursing, Cagayan de Oro City shall be from March 21 to April 4, 2007. Review classes will start on April 16 up to June 3, 2007.
Dole regional director Alan Macaraya and his labor information officer Elnie Cagas are now encouraging all interested June 2006 nursing exam passers from Western and Northern Mindanao and the Caraga region to visit them for more details and avail of this re-take and special review.
"Any interested applicant particularly those who want to avail of the special review may file their applications at our office or to any of our provincial offices," the Dole-Northern Mindanao officials said.
Executive Order No. 609 issued on March 12, 2007 provides how the Dole, acting through the Board of Nursing and utilizing the administrative processes of the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC), shall administer a "special voluntary re-take examination." This to nurses licensed under the June 2006 Nursing Licensure Examination.
Cagas said the special voluntary re-take examination shall cover the equivalent of Tests III and V of the June 2006 Nursing Licensure Examination.
This includes Test III, which relates to Care of Clients with Physiologic and Psychosocial Alterations (a) (Medical Surgical Nursing) and Test V relates to Care of Clients with Physiologic and Psychosocial Alterations (c) (Psychiatric Nursing).
"The re-take examination will enhance the employability of nurses licensed under the June 2006 Nursing Licensure Examination," the Dole statement reads.
It added that this is also to qualify the passers for a Visa Screen Certificate of the US Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools (CGFNS).
But Macaraya and Cagas made it clear that the re-take examinations shall be on a "voluntary basis" and shall be offered in the regular Nursing Licensure Examination to be given in June and December 2007.
They said these examinations are "non-licensure in character" and offered for free of charge.
"It will have no effect on the validity of licenses previously issued by the PRC," they said.
Dole officials said the application for the voluntary re-take shall be filed with the PRC under the same processes for the application for examination of regular Nursing Licensure Examination.
But it would be the Board of Nursing, which shall administer the exams under the joint Dole-PRC supervision and that the Dole Secretary, together with the Board of Nursing Chairperson, shall release the names of those who passed the voluntary re-take examinations.
To prepare the examinees for the Dole-initiated voluntary re-take examinations, Macaraya and Cagas announced that a special review shall be conducted.
They said it is the government, which shall provide review assistance at the rate of P 1,200 per enrolled special reviewee.
This is to be paid directly by the Dole to participating schools upon report of the completion of a special review class by the participating school.
"A special reviewee shall be entitled to government review assistance for only one special review," they said.
The government has allocated a total of P20,000,000 for the administration of the special voluntary examination, which shall be chargeable against appropriate funding sources as may be identified by the Secretary of Budget and Management.
The review will be facilitated through selected nursing schools listed as Center of Excellence (COE) Nursing Schools and nursing schools selected by Dole upon recommendation of the COE schools "based on the performance of the selected schools' graduates in past Nursing Licensure Examination and consideration of geographic distribution."
The registration for the special review shall be done online at www.specialnursingreview.dole.gov.ph.
Also, there shall be arrangements for manual filing with the COE and selected schools, as well as with the Dole Regional and Provincial Offices.

PhilHealth inks accord with LTO
IN AN effort to better serve the public, PhilHealth Regional Office (PRO)-Northern Mindanao signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) with the Land Transportation Office (LTO) on March 2, 2007, at the LTO Conference Room.
The MOA allows PhilHealth to conduct a 15-minute orientation during the pre-licensing seminar of LTO and to establish a Members' Assistance Desk inside LTO premises.
With this, PRO personnel are assigned to man the desk to answer queries and collect premium contributions starting March 5, 2007.
"When I was informed about this undertaking, I did not hesitate to give my approval. It is also the aim of LTO to do whatever it takes to better serve the public," LTO Regional Director Sultan Porcawa Dia said.
"This will surely help LTO-Northern Mindanao in its bid for ISO (International Standards Organization) accreditation," he added.
The establishment of the PhilHealth Members' Assistance Desk at the LTO is through the initiative of the Contributions and Premium Accounts Management Section of PRO.
The move, which is the first of its kind amongst PhilHealth Offices nationwide, is part of the agency's strategy in bringing its services closer to the public and to increase its level of collections. (Press release)

The newly-constructed Vista Verde gate with
houses rising in the background.
Vista Verde Village, a new residential project in Cagayan de Oro City, is fast taking shape with the erection and landscaping of its entrance gate and the construction of several houses within. The streets in the village have been paved and already, four of the five model houses have been built. Construction is also ongoing on Vista Verde's clubhouse and other amenities.
Vista Verde Village lies along Masterson Avenue, the major thoroughfare from the airport to downtown Cagayan de Oro and is located right beside the future site of Corpus Christi School on the left and Pueblo Golf Course's Hole No. 16 on the right. Aside from a road from Cluster 6 of the Pueblo Golf Estates, there is a connecting road at the back (Regatta Boulevard Extension) that allows residents to go to SM and the northern portions of the Pueblo de Oro Township without having to pass the highway.
Vista Verde Village is part of the Pueblo de Oro Township, a 360-hectare masterplanned mixed-use community in Cagayan de Oro. Within the Township are the Pueblo de Oro Golf & Country Club, a 72-par all-weather championship golf course designed by Robert Trent Jones II; the Pueblo de Oro Business Park with SM as a major locator; the Pueblo de Oro I.T. Ecozone, the first I.T. Park in Mindanao with Cagayan de Oro's first call center, Link2Support; residential villages; and commercial areas.

boju March 24th, 2007, 12:28 AM Balikbayans Come Home to the Golf Estates
Ervina Imperio Wilkinson was born and raised in Cagayan de Oro. She lived in Hong Kong for many years while husband Harry, an American national, worked there, first in banking, then in shipping. Now that Harry is retired from both jobs, they decided to purchase a home in Ervina's hometown. While the couple also have a home in Seattle, Washington, they like to escape the worst of the winter by basking here in Cagayan de Oro's balmy environs.
Ervina is an avid golfer, and two of their three sons have also taken up the sport, so Pueblo Golf Estates was the obvious choice for them. Harry, on the other hand, is not a golfer, favoring the all-American sports baseball and football. However, he is gamely willing to pick up his wife's sport and has even consented to taking a couple of golf lessons. In the meantime, he has become a familiar sight in his morning jogs around the Golf Estates.
http://www.pueblodeoro.com/images/wilkinson_house.jpg
Some common scene at Golf Estates
The crisp white of the Wilkinson house is a cool complement to the green of the course. Their home was built to take full advantage of the view. French doors and two balconies overlook the fairway. From the bedrooms upstairs, a curving staircase leads down to the living and dining areas. A breakfast nook outside the kitchen connects the house with the backyard.
Ervina's favorite part of the house is her state-of-the-art kitchen. She loves to demonstrate how her stove rises and falls at the touch of a button. Yet the best feature of her kitchen could be the picture window. Overlooking the golf course, the window allows Ervina to revel in her two loves, cooking and golf, all at once.

boju March 24th, 2007, 12:35 AM Building Blocks
A message from PODCs VP & GM RODOLFO L. MEÑES
A decade ago, we set out to build a Township in Cagayan de Oro, a place so complete you can live where you never have to leave. To have a complete Township, we need to have not only a place to live, but also something to do for recreation, a place to work, as well as facilities like school, church, and government. We had to set the building blocks of living in the Pueblo de Oro Township.
Ten years down the line, our first residential subdivision, Morning Mist, is now a bustling village. The residents have an organized Homeowners Association. There is a true sense of community as they really take time to get to know their neighbors. San Agustin Valley Homes, another of our more populous villages, not only has a homeowners association but an active youth group. Philamlife Village and Golden Glow Village are currently in the process of putting together their own organizations.
We are proud that the regions' most prestigious school, Xavier University, has transferred its high school and grade school here in Pueblo. Another top school, Corpus Christi, has also acquired property for its planned expansion.
With a world class championship golf course that has been recognized several times in leading golf publications such as Golfing Philippines and Inquirer Golf, Pueblo de Oro Golf & Country Club is a top draw of the city for tourism. We are set to host the PAL Interclub next year, which is the biggest and most prestigious golf tournament in the country. That we were able to bring the Interclub to Cagayan de Oro (CDO) not just once but three times is something to be proud of.
Our golf course has also caught the attention of the international golfing community. The Koreans, in particular have been so enamoured with our course that they have built within its periphery Hotel Koresco, a luxury hotel. Within the Koresco complex is an annex, and construction is also ongoing on their seven-storey residential condominium.
With our various commercial areas within walking distance of home, it is possible to work where you live. We are proud to have the first I.T. Park in Mindanao - the Pueblo de Oro I.T. Ecozone, which is now home to Link2Support, CDO's first call center. Of course, there is also SM Mall, its presence of which made the city a leading retail center in the country.
What is a community without a bit of greenery? At the Pueblo de Oro Township, we not only provide open spaces and parks within our villages - we have preserved 40 hectares of land as the Pueblo Urban Rainforest.
People are starting to take notice of the boom in Cagayan de Oro's Uptown area. The City has providentially prepared its road network in such a way that four new major roads adjoin the Pueblo de Oro Township. The OROCHAMBER has also broken ground on their Business Development Centre in the 2,800 sq.m. lot we have donated to them along Macapagal Drive.
Other projects in the works are the Northern Mindanao Institute of Good Governance and the church that will rise on the two-hectare plot donated by Pueblo to the Archdiocese of Cagayan. Our building blocks are well in place indeed!

One looking for a place to retire in or take a vacation or migrate to would be well advised to look at Cagayan de Oro. Over the last few years, the City has grown in leaps and bounds and has undergone many changes and yet has managed to retain its Old World charm.

St. Augustine Cathedral
The Cagayan de Oro (CDO) of today is a booming trade and tourism center, an education hub, and a population center of over 700,000 people. It is one of the major and fastest growing cities in the Philippines, with all the amenities of a modern city minus the negatives of Metro Manila such as floods, typhoons, and the legendary traffic jams.
http://www.pueblodeoro.com/images/cdo_pots.jpg
Stoneware pottery
Many of its residents, including a good number of non-homegrown Cagay-anons (the City has a large base of migrant population and is a virtual melting pot of people of diverse cultures) attest to the City's being a most ideal place to live in. Aside from its strategic location (it is just an hour and 20 minutes by plane from Manila; Cebu is just half an hour away by plane and a sleep away by fast ferry; Davao is just five hours away; Iligan to the West and Bukidnon to the Southeast are just an hour or so away), the City offers its residents a quality but affordable lifestyle. From food to power to real estate, prices here are relatively lower than Manila or other parts of Luzon or Cebu, enabling one to stretch his spending peso or dollar.
http://www.pueblodeoro.com/images/cdo_salay%20fan.jpg
The City has something to offer everyone. If you prefer nature tripping, the beaches are close by and so are mountain retreats. If you want more adventure, Cagayan de Oro River has the distinction of allowing river rafting experience all-year round, using the normal rafts or the Pinoy-style using tire inner tubes or salbabidas tied together. If you are a golf enthusiast, there is Pueblo de Oro Golf & Country Club which is just a few minutes away from the airport and if you want more golf, there is the classic Del Monte Golf Club nearby which has the distinction of breeding such golf champions as Celestino Tugot and Frankie Miñoza.

CDO has a good number of malls and modern shopping centers, including national brands like SM, Robinsons and Makro along with local brands, Gaisano, LimKetKai and Ororama. In addition, the City has completed the renovation of its major markets, including the Cogon and Carmen Markets, turning these into clean and modern multi-storey buildings, and the construction of the Westbound Market and Transport Terminal. The City also has something for night owls, including the Night Café which is similar to the Boardwalk of the revitalized Manila Bay area.

As an education hub in Northern Mindanao, CDO boasts of 300 private and public schools catering to primary, secondary, vocational and college education. The list of schools includes three universities, including Ateneo de Cagayan (Xavier University) and an International School catering to the educational needs of expatriates' families.

With regard to healthcare, the City has one of the more favorable hospital bed to population ratios (1:474 in 2003, the latest figure available) than most other places in the Philippines, thanks to the presence of at least 12 major and well-equipped hospitals.Other health facilities include a string of barangay health centers, private medical clinics, and modern diagnostic centers and laboratories.
As of last count, there are over 80 private subdivisions in the City, a good number of which, particularly those in Pueblo de Oro, boast of standard amenities and features such as wide roads (CDO is perhaps the only place in the Philippines where the set minimum width requirements for roads exceed national standards), underground drainage, perimeter fence, 24-hour security, and ample open spaces and facilities such as parks, playgrounds, and clubhouses.

In terms of modern day appurtenances such as broadband and the internet, the City does not lag. Proof of this is the proliferation of internet cafes where one can surf for less than P20 per hour (roughly US$0.30). As a further proof that it has the necessary telecom and other needed information technology (IT) infrastructures, the booming call center industry has spread to Cagayan de Oro, with a couple of call center firms and a medical transcription company now in operation and several more expected to locate here soon, particularly in the Pueblo de Oro IT Park, the first such park in Mindanao. As a special economic zone, the park offers tax holidays and other incentives to its investors and locators.

Golden Friendship Park, also referred to as Divisoria
Yes, CDO is in Mindanao but it is, and has always been, one of the most peaceful cities in the Philippines, with a crime rate that is much lower than most other cities. Its history has not been marred by the so-called Mindanao conflict, nor has any incident involving the Abu Sayyaf or some such terrorist group occurred there. It has helped that not only is peace and order a priority of the local government but there is also an inherent harmonious relationship between Christians and Muslims in this predominantly Christian area.
Because of the legendary friendliness and warmth of its people, CDO has always been known as the "City of Golden Friendship." Today, because of the great strides it has made by way of progress, notably in the last few years, City officials want to capture and highlight such progress by adopting another tag line: "A City in Bloom, in Blossom and in Boom." Fittingly, Cagayan de Oro is indeed such a city.

Pinoys told to spend wisely
THE regional office of the National Economic and Development Authority (Neda) in Nothern Mindanao said the issue of hunger cannot be totally attributed to poverty and lack of opportunity but also to the spending patterns of the people.
Neda Regional Director Myra V. Balanda said Filipinos must spend on the basic needs first before the luxuries so children will have enough to eat.
"Fighting hunger is a constant priority of the government and the focus on growing the economy, revitalizing the infrastructure, pushing anti-poverty programs and the overall drive for investments and jobs will help dent the incidence of hunger," she said.
She said the government takes the report of the Social Weather Station that a number of Filipino families go hungry with urgency and is working to pinpoint the specific areas and communities where hunger may be rife so that effective intervention can be mounted.
Balandra said the government has been putting up rolling stores in poor communities, checking on food prices in the markets ad making sure food transport routes are running smoothly from farm to markets.
In the local scene, however, she said, RDC-Northern Mindanao passed a resolution supporting the implementation of the "Garden of Go, Grow and Glow Foods" or G4, a banner project initiated by the Regional Nutrition Committee to serve as a practical strategy to combat malnutrition and alleviate poverty in the region.
She said under the G4 concept, people need not use their money to buy vegetables in the market but grow them in reusable containers in their own backyards.
This to ensure that only organic fertilizers are used or they may plant them in a communal garden, if there is no available space for a garden in their homes, Balandra said.
Balandra is Vice-Chairperson of the Regional Development Council in the region. She said the project is highlighted by the Search for Outstanding G4 gardens in both households and communal categories, implementation of which is highly supported by the local government units.
Meanwhile, in partnership with RDC- Northern Mindanao and the Lanao del Norte Provincial Government, the ACT for Peace Program has agreed to make G4 as an instrument for empowering poor communities and for promoting a culture of peace.
Known as the "Promote, Mobilize, Train and Employ G4" or Promot G4, the project is aimed at making G4 a continuing activity and ensure that it be sustained and institutionalized at all levels.
Conducted in the 3rd quarter of 2006, the project beneficiaries included 10 Peace and Development Communities (PDC) of the province, namely: Pagayawan, Bacolod, Mandulog, Iligan Cty, Delabayan, Kauswagan, Muntay, Kolambugan, Lumbac, Magsaysay, Imburnal, Matungao, Mentring, Maigo, Pindulunan, Munai as well as Small and Big Banisilon, both of Tangkal town.
Among the major components of Promote G4 is the training on Bio-Intensive Vegetable Production and Tilapia/Bangus Culture in Pond and the educational field visits to G4 winners in the other areas of the region, Balandra added.(Press release)

boju March 28th, 2007, 01:19 AM Cabanlas pushes for ‘adopt a squatter area’ program
by Lorebeth C. Requiroso/City Council
WHILE subdivision projects continue to open in the city, Councilor Edgar Cabanlas, chair of the City Council committee on subdivision, said he would soon propose an ‘Adopt A Squatter Area Program’ as an alternative for developers.
At the recent meeting of the committee, Cabanlas said that under RA 7279, otherwise known as the Urban Development and Housing Act of 1992, developers of subdivision projects are required to develop an area for socialized housing equivalent to at least twenty percent (20%) of the totalsubdivision area or total subdivision project cost.Under his proposal, Cabanlas said developers will have the option either to develop a new settlement or upgrade or improve slum areas. The Power learned that the UDHA law likewise gives the developer the option to embark on joint venture projects with local government units or any housing agencies.During the meeting of the committee last week, the Housing and Land Use Regulatory Board expressed support to the proposal, noting that there are a number of slum areas in the city which could be improved by developers. The committee will schedule another meeting with developers and the HLURB to discuss further the proposed ‘Adopt A Squatter Area Program.’The move comes even as the subdivision body is currently monitoring the strict compliance of developers with the UDHA law and to the development permit issued to them by City Hall.Councilor Cabanlas said socialized housing projects are intended for marginalized sector who cannot afford to pay high housing costs, thus the law should be fully complied with.

boju March 28th, 2007, 01:25 AM Mayor Emano urges ‘Handog-Titulo’ beneficiaries to value their lands
by Sandra B. Tadeo/City Information Office
City Mayor Vicente Y. Emano exhorted the farmer beneficiaries of the Handog Titulo Program in barangay Lumbia to treasure and protect the lands that have now legally become their own.
This as Mayor Emano, together with Vice Mayor Michelle T. Spiers and key officials of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR)-10 and the city government distributed a total of 93 land titles to the members of the Lumbia Sitio Leaders Association Federation. The land titles distributed to qualified beneficiaries in Lumbia today covered a total of 63.5585 hectares of land in Sitios Upper Kiam-is and Lower Kiam-is, all of Barangay Lumbia. The said land titles are only a part of the 155 land titles covering a total land area of 116.8 hectares of alienable and disposable lands in barangay Lumbia that are distributed under the “Handog Titulo Program” of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR).
The remaining 62 land titles covering a total land area of 53.2415 hectares in Lumbia will be awarded to the qualified farmer beneficiaries as soon as they shall have complied with the documents required for the processing of their respective land titles.
During the awarding of the land titles in Lumbia today, Mayor Emano exhorted the farmers to treasure their land not only for their own benefit but as a lifetime legacy that they can pass on to their children and the succeeding generations. “With the land titles that you now possess, no one can drive you out from the land that you have been tilling for decades and this will certainly give you security of land tenure,” Mayor Emano pointed out. The city mayor also underscored that the Handog Titulo Program of the DENR is also in consonance with the thrust of the city government to promote social justice among the poor and landless farmers in the city.
To date, a total of 428 farmers in barangays Indahag, Balubal and Bayanga received their land titles under the Handog Titulo Program covering a total land area of 638.45 hectares of alienable and disposable land. Aside from the Handog Titulo Program, the city government also awarded a total of 15, 773 hectares of forest land under the Community-Based Forest Management Agreement (CBFMA) assuring some 3,382 poor farmers, security of land tenure for 25 years and renewable every 25 years thereafter.

Opposition, Team Unity slates file candidacies for Cagayan de Oro, Misamis Oriental
By Mike Baños
The United Opposition slate for Cagayan de Oro and Team Unity for Misamis Oriental filed their full slates with their respective local offices of the Commission of Elections Wednesday morning.
The Partido ng Demokratikong Pilipino (PDP) filed their candidacies first around 9:00am following mass at the St. Augustine Metro Cathedral.
The candidates are former mayor Pablo P. Magtajas, for mayor; former administration councilor Alvin Calingin for vice mayor; former vice mayor Antonio Soriano for congressman, 1st district; former Immigration Commissioner and Erap Lawyer Rufus Rodriguez; and the following as councilors:
First district; Jose Abbu, Benjo Acedera, Roger Abaday, Roy Raagas, Douglas Dabatian, Zaldy Ocon, and Dominador Calunia; second district, Teodulfo Lao, Manuel Ravanera, Pio Baconga, Alejo Olano, Jr., Leon Gan, Carmelito Damo and Raul Aleria.
Mr. Soriano said they two more slots or one each district for councilor are under negotiation and should be completed in time for the deadline Thursday.
Inside sources said the group had to call in PDP Chairman and Founder Aquilino Pimentel, Jr. from Manila Wednesday to help forge a compromise among the various factions of the opposition.
The main bone of contention was reportedly the 1st district congressional seat which was a toss-up between councilor Annie Daba and Mr. Soriano. However, Mr. Magtajas reportedly approved the candidacy of Mr. Soriano with whom he has been estranged for some years now after the latter showed a certificate of endorsement from PDP President Jejomar Binay endorsing Mr. Soriano as the party's official candidate for the first district.
Lawyer Frederico Gapuz, who had earlier sought to unite the opposition into one slate to oppose the administration party headed by his estranged protege and incumbent city mayor Vicente Emano, said he considers his job only 70% successful since the National People's Coalition of Eduardo Cojuangco, Jr. will also be fielding a full slate headed by former Misamis Oriental Governor Antonio Calingin. He also cited that the group was missing former Mayor Manolo Tagarda who has launched his candidacy for the 1st District congressional seat as an independent.
Typical of Cagayan de Oro's opposition streak, progressive party list groups Bayan Muna, Gabriela, and Anak Pawis were very much in evidence carrying placard and streamers in support of the PDP candidates outside the city Comelec office. Other groups present for a show of support included Pilipina, the Black and White Movement with lead convenors Corazon "Dinky" Soliman and Leah Navarro, and KLARO (Koletkibong Liderato Angayan pares sa Reforma sa Oro.
The NPC and the administration ticket of Mr. Emano's PaDayon Pilipino party will file their certificates of candidacies tomorrow, just before the deadline, it was learned.
Meantime, the Team Unity slate for Misamis Oriental province filed their certificates of candidacies together also Wednesday morning at the Comelec office in Antonio Luna St., this city.
Headed by incumbent Gov. Oscar Moreno who has been endorsed by Pres. Gloria Arroyo as Team Unity's standard bearer for the province, the rest of the slate follows: Incumbent Provincial Board Member Norris Babiera, for vice governor; incumbent congressman Danilo Lagbas for the 1st district; Incumbent Tagoloan Mayor Yevgeny Emano, 2nd district; and the following as provincial board members: 1st District- Jaime Caina, Benedict Lagbas, Wayne Militante, Jeremy Pelaez and Peter Unabia; 2nd District - Oliver Actub, Francisco Bade, Emmanuel Mugot, Erlinda Niere, and Santiago Sabal.
The group was accompanied by incumbent Cagayan de Oro Mayor Vicente Emano, who is also the founder and titular head of PaDayon Pilipino. Mr. Emano had earlier been noncommital about his support for Mr. Moreno's candidacy but later endorsed the latter following the President's endorsement.

LOS ANGELES - When you watch “Spider-Man 3” this summer, watch out for the cool basketball moves of Tobey Maguire. He was trained by Filipino American basketball coach, Hernando Planells, also known as “Coach H.”
The 30-year-old Planells, who is the son of Filipina Carmen and Spaniard Hernando, is currently the head basketball coach for the Hollywood Fame team that is in the American Basketball Association (ABA) and is also a basketball scout for Marty Blake who is the director of scouting for the NBA.
As a basketball scout, Planells uses his keen eye for talent to evaluate players for the NBA draft.
“I have helped Marty Blake to provide professional basketball scouting and consulting to the NBA and to other clients around the globe,” Planells pointed out in an exclusive interview with Philippine News.
Aside from Miami Heat assistant coach Eric Spoelstra, Planells may be the only other Filipino American professional basketball coach in the United States.
His experience and background has also allowed him to be a technical advisor for Reelsports Solutions, in motion pictures including “Coach Carter” starring Samuel L. Jackson, “The Longest Yard” starring Adam Sandler, “Rebound” starring Martin Lawrence and “Spider-Man 3”starring Tobey Maguire.
As a technical advisor on movies, he developed basketball choreography, personally trained the actors and coordinated tryouts and casting calls for athletes.
He was also hired to train the athletes of “Extreme Dodgeball,” the highest-rated television show on the Game Show Network.
“Coach H” was named the head coach for the Bouncers on Spike TV's smash hit “SlamBall.”
Born in Los Angeles, Planells lives in Claremont, California with his wife Carmel and their two children, Preston and Gabrielle. We were able to catch up with him and below are excerpts of our interview with Planells.
How did you get involved in Hollywood Fame basketball team?
I had heard an announcement about a new minor league team coming to Los Angeles and it being owned by celebrities. I thought it was interesting and made a call over to them. After some conversations and meetings, they asked me to come on board as the Director of Player Personnel. It certainly helped that I am a scout for Marty Blake, who is the Director of Scouting for the NBA; ownership needed someone who was familiar with players and thought that I would be a much needed addition to the Fame. As the season progressed, I was elevated to Associate Head Coach where I worked under former NBA Head Coach Don Casey. When Coach Casey stepped down I was promoted to head coach and was very thankful for the opportunity.
How is it working with celebrities at Hollywood Fame who owns it (i.e. Nick Lachey, Stacey Keibler and others)?
The ownership group is fantastic. They are heavily involved with the team and the day to day operations. They are committed to making this work in Los Angeles which is a very hard market for minor league sports.
How did you get involved into show business and choreograph the basketball action in such movies as “Coach Carter” and “The Longest Yard”?
In 2001, I returned to Los Angeles after a one-year stint at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas and came across an ad looking for a basketball coach for a TV show called “SlamBall.” I applied, went to the coaches' tryout and was selected to be the head coach for the team called the Bouncers. I was on “SlamBall” for two years and that is where I met Mark Ellis who owns a company called Reelsports. They specialize in sports choreography in movies, TV and commercials. They needed a basketball choreographer for a movie that was going to start in a few months and Mark asked me if I was interested in working with him. I jumped at the opportunity and have been working on sports production ever since. I have worked on “Coach Carter”, “The Longest Yard,” “Rebound,” “Spider-Man 3” among others.
Tell us more about your experiences working with Tobey Maguire (“Spider-Man 3”) and Robin Williams.
Tobey and Robin are tremendous and it was an honor working with them.
Since Tobey already plays basketball, he needed less training from me and more guidance in the choreographing of the basketball scene. We worked together on what he wanted the scene to look like in “Spider-Man 3.” We put it all together and when it was time to shoot, he made it his own and it turned out great.
As for working with Robin, I received a phone call asking me to train Robin for a couple of days so that he can be prepared to do a basketball scene in an upcoming movie “Licensed to Wed.” Robin worked extremely hard (with jokes in between drills!) in our very little time together to make sure that he was prepared. He ran through all the drills, practiced his shooting and his ball-handling. After two days, he remarkably improved.
Any other Hollywood actors you worked with? Please tell us what movies and how it was working with them.
I worked with Samuel L. Jackson on “Coach Carter,” Adam Sandler on “The Longest Yard,” Martin Lawrence on “Rebound” and right now I'm working with Will Ferrell and Woody Harrelson on a basketball movie. Working with all these actors has been a great experience. All of them are really good people who want to make great movies. All of them have been very open to my coaching and training methods because they understand how important it is for them to look like a real athlete on the big screen.
Tell us more about your Filipino descent.
My mom Carmen Pangan Pelaez is from the Cagayan de Oro and my father Hernando is from Spain. They were married in the Philippines and my mother came to the U.S. in 1975. I still have brothers and sisters in the Philippines who I speak to as often as I can. I am very proud to be a Filipino basketball coach in the U.S. Basketball is a sport where you don't see that many Filipinos coaching above the high school level in the United States. I feel blessed to coach at a professional minor league level and to be an NBA scout for Marty Blake. I hope I can be an inspiration to other Filipinos who dream about coaching at a high level.
Have you ever been to the Philippines which is a basketball-crazy country?
I've been to the Philippines twice but I haven't been there in about five years. I loved it over there. Basketball is such a huge sport over there and I have always wanted to coach in the PBA and work with the national team.
What are your future projects?
After I'm done with the season, I will be working on the Will Ferrell basketball movie “Semi-Pro.” I am also coordinating a women's pro basketball showcase that will take place in May. During that time, I will be getting my schedule to start training NBA draft hopefuls at the Home Depot Center in Carson, California.
I am also trying to lay the ground work for a basketball camp/clinic in the Philippines. I have always wanted to go back and put together a clinic where Filipino basketball players can improve their fundamentals and footwork and introduce them to new techniques and ideas.

hindi naman siguro insecure ang davao para magalit sa ganung bagay lang. and waway said its fine, and were not making it up naman eh, its done based on statistics by the NEDA. may kanya kanya lang talagang individual appeal each city. and cdo's strong points just happened to be its vibrant economy. youre not taking the place of the other city naman dahil it has gone a long way na din BUT instead youre giving mindanao a new alternative lang. i asked my officemates opinion regarding cdo since she was able to go on a vacation to both cities, im not gonna post here what she said but i will just say that her comments are pleasantly flattering for cdo.

N. Mindanao contributes 27% to VisMin total output
NORTHERN Mindanao remains to be the biggest regional economy in Mindanao contributing 27 percent to the island's total output in 2006.
This is contained in the State of the Region Report (SRR) delivered by Governor Leo Loreto S. Ocampos of Misamis Occidental, chairperson of the Regional Development Council (RDC) in Northern Mindanao, during its 74th full council meeting on February 27 in Cagayan de Oro City.
"Last year, we laid down in our Medium Term Regional Development Plan (MTRDP), the macroeconomic targets of sustained economic growth and poverty reduction by pursuing job creation and economic growth, social development and direct anti-poverty measures, among others," Ocampos said.
Again for 2006, Northern Mindanao had the 6th largest economy among the 17 regions of the country with a Gross Regional Domestic Product (GRDP) of P58 billion at constant 1985 prices.
With a per capita GRDP of P14,820, we outranked the regions in the Visayas and Mindanao and occupied the 3rd spot trailing only the National Capital Region (NCR) and the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR), he said.
"At constant prices" means the valuation of transactions, wherein the influence of price changes from the base year to the current year have been removed while GRPD means the aggregate of the gross value added or income from each industry or economic activity of the regional economy.
Ocampos said Northern Mindanao's GRDP grew at an average of 3.8 percent in 2005, although lower than the 7.2 percent growth realized in 2004. The relatively slower growth was due mainly to the dry spell during the period, which affected our agricultural production.
Change in prices
Changes in prices of basic goods and services remained within the single digit level. The 6.4 percent average inflation rate registered 1.3 percentage points lower than that of 2005 and the decrease was brought about by the continued easing of prices in most commodities especially in the prices of fuel, light and water, he said.
Meanwhile, Ocampos said efforts to increase the government's ability to finance critical programs and projects also paid off as the region's tax collections went up by 12 percent, from P3.6 billion in 2005 to P4 billion in 2006, most of which came from income taxes that contributed 63 percent while 26 percent were generated from the Value Added Taxes (VAT). This was also augmented by the collection of customs duties, which reached P1.75 billion.
Investments
New investments amounting to P23.8 billion were noted in the region, which represented 24 percent increase compared to the P19.2 billion in 2005 with Misamis Oriental and Cagayan de Oro City leading the growth at 44 percent and contributed 67 percent to the region's total.
About P19.12 million of sales was generated by 619 exhibitors due to their participation in 50 domestic fairs while another P10 million worth of sales was generated by 11 exhibitors for their participation in four international fairs.
The region's One Town One Product Program (OTOP) also generated P107 million investments and created 4,108 jobs while its domestic sales amounted to P60 million and its exports sales US$355,000.
There were 101 Small and Medium Enterprises developed and 201 SME's assisted in the areas of product development, access to credit, marketing and promotions.
"With all these good things happening in our region, let us continue to build on the gains by sustaining our stable peace and order to ensure the continuing growth of our strategic initiatives and big investments," Ocampos further said.

Oro's 5th bridge to be inaugurated by mid-2007
CAGAYAN de Oro City's 5th urban bridge project will soon be inaugurated by middle of this year after the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) released P50 million to the City Government as additional funding intended for the construction of its two approaches.
City planning and development officer Estrella Sagaral said the fund release came after the City Council authorized Mayor Vicente Y. Emano to enter into a Memorandum of Agreement with the DPWH for the release of P49,625,000 as additional funding for the bridge project.
She said the bridge structure is already finished but the approaches on both Macasandig and Carmen sides have to be completed.
In the wake of the P50-million release, the completion and inauguration of the city's 5th bridge that will connect barangays Macasandig and Carmen is expected to happen by middle of this year, she added.
The Carmen-Macasandig bridge project is the 5th bridge that spans the Cagayan de Oro River aside from the existing Ysalina Bridge, Maharlika Bridge, Emmanuel Pelaez Bridge and the soon-to-be finished Puntod-Kauswagan Bridge.
The new bridge is envisioned to help ease the volume of vehicles passing through the two heavily congested bridges (Ysalina and Maharlika), especially during traffic peak hours since these two bridges are located at the center of the city. (CIO)

Iligan's totography is akin to that of CDO- both cities are bordering on the sea on one side and the mountain ridges on the other with the national highway in the middle.
