Wednesday, December 14, 2011
THE Philippine Institute of Chemical Engineers Inc. (Piche) Cagayan de Oro has expressed its intention to reactivate the bio-reactor in Barangay Lapasan.
Engr. Mary Hazel Abasolo of Piche-Cagayan de Oro said once the bio-reactor is reactivated, solid wastes like cellophanes and plastic bottles can be converted into bricks, pots and chairs.
Abasolo, who appeared before the City Council during its regular session on Tuesday, said those thrown leftover food and dung can also be converted into fertilizer through the “densifier”.

that would usually shift towards north. Many TS pattern starts like this but when it hits the high mountains of Mindanao it shifts towards the north.
if it doesn't shift to the north, then it will break up and dump lots of water in Mindanao. It's a big opportunity for Lolong to escape when there is flooding in its enclosure.
It's a slow TS at about 65kph only. The wind won't be a factor but the water volume will be.
We will find out if the solution they've made since the last flash floods is going to fix the problem.
If ZEALEP hasn't finished their flood control wall then they better be ready now.
And LKK Mall as well. We will find out if they made any improvements on the Bitan-ag creek and the drainage that follows Yacapin St all the way to Cagayan river.

Local government units told to climate-proof land plans
LOCAL GOVERNMENT units (LGUs) are urged to include climate proofing in their land use plans to better prepare for climate change risks, a German development agency said yesterday.
Speaking at a round-table discussion held in Makati City yesterday, Walter Salzer, director and principal adviser for the Environment and Rural Development Program of the Deutsche Gesellschaft fur Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) said LGUs need to climate-proof or consider different scenarios related to climate change in land use plans to see if they are ready to respond to such events.
“It is necessary to include climate risks and scenarios in LGUs’ land use plans since the Philippines is vulnerable to climate change,” Mr. Salzer said.
He added that LGUs need to consider different scenarios such as drought or floods to see whether existing land use plans contain measures that can deal with such risks.
LGUs also have to look at the impact of different climate-related scenarios to economic activities in their area of responsibility to have a better plan.
Mr. Salzer said that to date, only a few LGUs have climate-proof land use plans despite the country’s exposure to climate change risks.
The GIZ, he said, has implemented a project providing technical assistance to the municipal government of Silago in Southern Leyte in coming up with a climate-proof land use plan.
The GIZ is planning to implement a similar project in other areas by next year.
“The plan is to do it [climate-proof land use plans] in other areas like in Regions IV-B (Occidental Mindoro-Oriental Mindoro-Marinduque-Romblon-Palawan), VI (Western Visayas) and VIII (Eastern Visayas) and provinces of Cagayan de Oro and Bukidnon,” Mr. Salzer said.

If TS SENDONG slows down upon landfall, it will dump rain on the watershed of Agusan River, Cagayan de oro River, Kabacan River, Pulangi River and the rest of the Rio Grande de Mindanao River System, since most of them originate from the uplands of the Bukidnon Plateau and the Compostela Valley. Those areas are expected to receive most of the storm's precipitation. But if the rainbands of the storm are still wide enough, all major river systems and waterways along major populated areas should take precaution. Steep slopes of Bukidnon, Misamis Oriental, Agusan Provinces, Surigao Provinces, Compostela Valley and Davao Oriental should also be alerted for possible landslides

daghan naapektohan near the river banks....
agree.... there was no storm in 2009.

Its obvious that since this part of the Philippines is not usually pounded by strong typhoons, the people and the authorities thought, a "mere tropical storm" isn't going to do much harm since CDO and Iligan has seen floods before. Plus the fact that the weather was fine when storm signal # 2 was raised earlier, nobody expected it could get worse. :ohno:

from the pictures, i immediately noticed the deforested mountains in the place, had it been intact, water will slowly find its way through its tributaries and not in a flash as trees and forests are known to hold waters for a period of time and not inundate a large swath of lowlands,..

the eastern city boundary is Bugo. There is a bridge right after Del Monte Cannery, that's the boundary. Tagoloan River is close by which is even bigger and longer than Cagayan River. Electricity has just been coming back so majority were not able to charge their mobile phones. Landline has problems too. No water on most of the city.

He has been making his rounds since Friday night... During that time, they also put up the first rescue command center at the city tourism hall... He later ordered its transfer to the West City Central School after flood waters breeched the city hall's river "protection"... I've seen VYE on national TV since yesterday... :-)

i'd like to see Emano more of that. Also i'd like to see him order a "re-design" of the "river protection" wall because that looks "amateurist" when I first saw it like that. They can start with a Dutch dike builder/company for a start as a consultant.

Skyscraper
Songwriters: Robbins, Lindy / Gad, Toby / Kerli
Skies are crying
I am watching
Catching teardrops in my hands
Only silence as it's ending, like we never had a chance
Do you have to, make me feel like there is nothing left of me?
[Chorus]
You can take everything I have
You can break everything I am
Like I'm made of glass
Like I'm made of paper
Go on and try to tear me down
I will be rising from the ground
Like a skyscraper!
Like a skyscraper!
As the smoke clears
I awaken, and untangle you from me
Would it make you, feel better to watch me while I bleed?
All my windows, still are broken
But I'm standing on my feet
[Chorus]
You can take everything I have
You can break everything I am
Like I'm made of glass
Like I'm made of paper
Go on and try to tear me down
I will be rising from the ground
Like a skyscraper!
Like a skyscraper!
[Bridge]
Go run, run, run
I'm gonna stay right here
Watch you disappear, yeah
Go run, run, run
Yeah it's a long way down
But I am closer to the clouds up here
You can take everything I have
You can break everything I am
Like i'm made of glass
Like i'm made of paper, Ohhh woaah
Go on and try to tear me down
I will be rising from the ground
Like a skyscraper!
Like a skyscraper!
Like a skyscraper!
Like a skyscraper!

really heartbreaking to see all the pictures of the aftermath. people have lost loved ones/ lives and property-- some of them associated with people i know.
never imagined anything like this happening in the area. i lived in CDO for two year (2002-2004) and never experienced anything close to this- the most would be strong rains that did not even have storm proportions.
i understand power is back in most areas. amid the darkness of this night let the Light burn bright, Cagayan!
you will overcome!

you are right, maraming scam na pweding gagamitin sa pangyayaring ito kaya i check n'yong maigi ang mga nagprovide ng nos. like 'yong sa Philippine National Red Cross, you can check from their suggested ways to donate from their site, under DONATE, SMS & G-Cash option.:)

EdmundX December 18th, 2011, 04:10 PM Its really inevitable to have more victims in a calamity like this because our population is rapidly growing and people are living in high risk areas esp in CDO. Before Isla de Oro had less people living because that was an environmentally protected sanctuary but the local govt can't control people dwelling and moving in that area. I would suggest that Isla de Oro will be evacuated and people should be restricted putting on their shanties there. But convert that island into a bird and wildlife sanctuary.
InformaticIAN December 18th, 2011, 05:03 PM oh my....what happened to CDO? i was shocked when i saw yahoo news, kahapon lang nasa 200, kanina 500 ngayon nasa 600 na ang casualties, bakit po umabot ng ganito? i have no idea what you've been through, but my sympathies and prayers are for the people of Mindanao now.
Malacanang directed DSWD and DILG to help people in affected areas... hindi naman masama ang magsaya sa pasko, pero i saw Secretary Dinky Soliman yesterday sa St Francis square at nagshoshopping... hindi bat yesterday or friday ito nangyari? sana mali ako sa nakita ko, and i hope the secretary is doing her job.
yun po bang ilog na malapit sa ginagawang primavera ay umapaw?

While nation mourns Sendong's dead, Aquino partying with actresses in Palace? :bash::bash:

MANILA -- Where was President Benigno S. Aquino III on Sunday evening, as the people of Cagayan de Oro and Iligan cities and several other areas in Visayas and Mindanao grapple with the devastation of tropical storm Sendong? Apparently, drinking with his security personnel in Malacanang, and laughing and exchanging jokes with actresses.
This was according to a post on Twitter by actress Valerie Concepcion on Sunday, the same day the combined death toll in Cagayan de Oro and Iligan climbed to more than 600.
“Done w/ work.. Tnx for having me.. :) It was nice to see Pres. P-Noy laughing at my jokes & enjoying my performance..ü #Malacañang #PSGNight,“ Concepcion said in her tweet that has since been deleted as of posting time.
In her series of tweets, Concepcion said she was performing three songs for the President and was alongside singer Jessa Zaragosa, who was one of the performers.
InterAksyon.com called the Presidential Security Group early Monday and confirmed that the PSG Christmas party was indeed held in Malacanang Sunday night. But the PSG personnel, who refused to be identified, said he was "not authorized to say if the President" was there.
Concepcion’s tweets have caught the ire of many Filipinos on the microblogging site who assailed the president for partying at such a sorrowful time for the country.

To the people of CDO, please be vigilant in continually monitoring the Sea Surface Temperature (SST) in your area.
research show that storms become more dangerously intense (http://www.ouramazingplanet.com/535-hurricanes-may-become-more-intense-climate-change-101110.html) with warmer SST and changes in typhoon tracks (http://journals.ametsoc.org/doi/abs/10.1175/JCLI-D-11-00074.1) are traced to SST warming.
Strengthen and empower yourselves with knowledge and awareness to combat these challenges for your and your loved ones' safety.
Constellation2k December 19th, 2011, 01:28 AM Phoenix to build 100 outlets in ’12

MANILA, Philippines—Independent player Phoenix Petroleum Philippines Inc. is embarking on an aggressive expansion plan that will see the construction of around 100 gas stations in 2012 alone.
In a briefing Friday, Phoenix Petroleum AVP Raymond T. Zorrilla said the company would spend roughly P500 million to put up around 40 gas stations in Luzon next year; 20 in the Visayas; and 40 more in Mindanao, in a bid “to formalize our claim to be the leading independent player.”
“We have a vision to become the leading independent player both in terms of network share and market share,” Zorrilla explained.
Should all the 100 stations be completed within 2012, Phoenix Petroleum would have a total of 320 outlets by the end of next year, from an estimated retail network count of 220 stations by end-2011. The additional 100 stations are expected to further jack up the company’s sales retail volume by 25 percent, and its commercial trade sales by 25 percent, he added.
Zorrilla clarified that the P500 million budget—which would be sourced from internally generated funds or savings and through a loan facility—was meant only for the retail network expansion and would not include other planned capital expenditures of Phoenix Petroleum.
According to Zorrilla, the company also targets to put up next year three more depot terminals in the Visayas alone, to support its growing retail network.
“We’re building additional depots next year. We have three more, which we intend to put up in Iloilo, Bacolod and Cebu. Definitely, we’re also planning expansions of the existing terminals in Davao,” Zorrilla disclosed.
Recently, Phoenix Petroleum opened a depot in Cagayan de Oro. The terminal has a capacity of 37 million liters, which can be expanded by another 13 million liters. This facility will serve as an import terminal to cater to clients in North Mindanao, he said.

KulasKusgan December 19th, 2011, 02:22 AM Davao City convenese special session for financial aid to victims in CDO, Iligan
By Mindanews | Sunday| December 18, 2011 | Filed under: Top Stories
DAVAO CITY (MindaNews/18 December) — Mayor Sara Duterte has called for a special session of the City Council tomorrow (Monday) to pass an ordinance authorizing the release of a portion of the city’s calamity fund for assistance to flood victims in the cities of Cagayan de Oro and Iligan.
Duterte told MindaNews she called for a special session at 10 a.m. on for the immediate release of the financial assistance.
“We are still waiting for the official tally of the Department of Social Welfare and Development before we can compute how much and/or what to give,” she said.
During the special session, the executive department will submit to the City Council the proposed amount for donation.
Davao City, which also suffered from a major flooding in late June still has P87.3 million in calamity funds, inclusive of the augmentation from the newly-approved supplemental budget.
This would be the second time in three months that the city government is extending financial assistance to calamity-stricken local government units.
The City Council on October 5 authorized the mayor to donate P7.4 million for the victims of typhoons Pedring and Quiel.
The financial aid can be utilized for relief operations and provision of emergency assistance to victims of flood such as provision of temporary shelter, distribution of relief goods and commodities, rehabilitation, reconstruction of public facilities and other infrastructure.
Sec. 5 of the Implementing Rules and Regulations of the Local Government Code says the local government unit can “provide financial assistance to other local government units whose area or portion thereof had been declared under state of calamity by its Sanggunian.” (MindaNews)
