Virgin Cola

Richard Bransons company originally launched Virgin Cola in 1994 with the intention of rivalling the American giants, even going so far as to drive a tank through New Yorks Time Square in a marketing campaign and launching 'The Pammy', a bottle shape modelled on the body of Pamela Anderson. Although the Virgin brand is well established around the world, Branson admits that cola is one of the less succesful Virgin ventures. Princes have produced, marketed and distributed Virgin Cola under franchise since 2002 in the UK, and relaunched the product in 2004 with the 'great new taste' campaign, in which taste tests were undertaken that showed people preferred Virgin to other leading cola brands. It was admirable of Branson, although probably foolish, to take on Pepsi and Coke, but in comparison to them I prefer Virgin - it's better both in terms of value for money and, more importantly, taste.

It's a sweet tasting cola that lacks the gassiness of the Yankee brands. It is fizzy, but not too much so, which makes it especially good as a mixer, (I'll have a whisky in mine thanks!). For the same reason it's more refreshing to drink if you're thirsty. It does the job of quenching thirst which doesn't happen with drinks that are too sharp and just make you burp if you glug them down too quickly. More differences from other colas are; the lack of aftertaste and lack of icky feeling on your teeth after drinking. That's not to say it isn't full of sugars and other additives, so you shouldn't drink a lot of it, but if you do, be sure to brush your teeth regularly. It also has a tendency to keep you awake due to the caffeine content - this is why drinking whisky and coke is dangerous for me - I feel wide awake and so think I mustn't be drunk! Like most soft drinks it tastes best chilled and it does have a tendency to go flat if left in the bottle for too long.

On average Virgin is cheaper than Coca Cola and Pepsi, (you shouldn't pay more than about £1.35 for a two litre bottle oop north), and it's often on special offer. It's available in regular, diet, vanilla and caffeine free varieties and in the usual varied sizes of cans and bottles in most supermarkets and various independent retailers.

Mayor Jaraula positive of Oro’s potential for more foreign investments, tourists
by Sandra B. Tadeo/City Information Office
Date Published: 2007-10-10

City Mayor Constantino G. Jaraula expressed optimism in Cagayan de Oro’s capacity to attract more foreign investors to put up businesses here in the city.

Earlier in the week as he marked his first 100 days in office, Mayor Jaraula is confident that he has boosted the establishment of an ideal local business climate by as much as 50 percent.

Mayor Jaraula said that in the first 100 days of his administration, he had implemented a continuing drive to clear the streets and sidewalks against illegal vending and structures.

The clearing of sidewalks against vending has received positive feedback from local taxpayers, particularly the members of the Oro Chamber and Promote CDO Foundation who have lauded Mayor Jaraula for his strong political will in enforcing the law against sidewalk vending.

Mayor Jaraula explained that with the clearing operations, taxpayers are encouraged to pay their obligations diligently and promptly as they have seen how the taxes they have paid were put to good use by the city government.

The city chief executive added that as a result of the continuous clearing of streets and sidewalks, more tourists and investors are taking notice of the positive changes that are taking place in the city.

Already, Mayor Jaraula disclosed that over 1,000 hectares of prime real estates investments have been established in several areas in the city at present.

But Mayor Jaraula pointed out that over and above the physical achievements in the earlier days of his administration, it is the unity among all sectors in the city after the May elections which he considered as the most his most significant accomplishment.

Hey guys, tenants and illegal structures are being demolished there inside Floirendo property across Gaisano Mall. According to some of those evicted, SM daw "nagpapahawa sa ila kay napalit na daw sa SM ang lote" (Trans. They're being evicted by SM because they have already bought the lot).---this needs to be verified and confirmed yet. Some talk also said Stephen Gaisano wanted to buy the lot after hearing of earlier news that SM had backed off on the property but was disappointed to know that SM had already bought it.^^ -- still, this info on Gaisano has to be confirmed but the demolition and clearing of structures inside the property is already confirmed. ya, if this Macasandig will be converted to a commercial area, again we have a lot of narrow roads again lol, like dvsoria which I know is a residential area way back years ago and now a commercial area na (roads are design for residential only).

You're right @ph_matrix. But if a Landco Business Park will be pushed through in Macasandig's neighbor, Nazareth and once the construction of Ayala Business Park in Indahag will be finished likewise in the near future, I'm sure Macasandig will be sandwiched with new awesome developments from now.^^

Will somebody pass by that area?

I'll zip my mouth first in regards to that, unless there's a concrete news.^^

Oro joins pact for sustainable agriculture in Mindanao

IN ORDER to make the existing agricultural areas in Mindanao sustainable, the City Government of Cagayan de Oro joined the rest of the 12 other local government beneficiaries in Misamis Oriental in signing the Mindanao Rural Development Program-Adaptable Program Loan 2 (MRDP-APL2) of the Department of Agriculture.

The signing of the Memorandum of Agreement was held recently at the Harbor Lights Hotel and Restaurant where City Councilor Ceasar Ian Acenas, chair of the city council committee on agriculture and fisheries, represented City Mayor Constantino G. Jaraula.

City agriculturist Godofredo Bajas said Cagayan de Oro is among the 252 local government units in Mindanao, which will benefit from the said program.

He said the program covers the hinterland barangays of the city particularly the barangays of Baikingon, San Simon, Pagatpat, Lumbia, Tagpangi, Pagalungan, Taglimao, Tuburan, Pigsag-an, Tumpagon, Bayanga, Mambuaya, Dansolihon, Tignapoloan and Besigan.

The above-mentioned barangays will identify programs that will reduce poverty by improving its income and food security among the rural poor and the indigenous communities.

The program will start this year until 2012 where a US$123.75 Billion amount of projects will be funded by the International Bank for Reconstruction Development for the entire island of Mindanao.

Bajas said the programs, which the barangays will design must be based on the four series of programs set by the national government like Investments for Governance Reform, Rural Infrastructure Sub-projects, Community Fund for Agricultural Development Sub-projects and Natural Resource Management.

He added that upon entering into the agreement, the City Government will then create a Multi-Sectoral Committee, a Revenue Generation Committee and a Planning and Monitoring Committee for the sustainability of the projects.

The city agriculturist will also ask Mayor Jaraula to set aside P500,000 to kick-off the project and to received the loan that will be granted to the city.

Bajas hoped that through this program, the rural poor farmers will improve their income and achieve sustainable food security. (Press release)

Mayor Jaraula orders BORAC traffic system at Carmen bridge
by Sandra B. Tadeo/City Information Office
Date Published: 2007-10-11

City Mayor Constantino G. Jaraula ordered the termination of the old traffic re-routing scheme in bararangay Carmen and the enforcement of Boarding One-Way Road Access (BORAC) system effective immediately.

This after Mayor Jaraula signed Executive Order No. 2007 CGJ-34 which adopted the BORAC system at the Ysalina Bridge, more popularly known as Carmen Bridge in barangay Carmen.

The issuance of the said executive order was a result of a week-long trial termination of the old re-rerouting scheme which elicited positive feedback and comments from the transport sector and the commuters.

Based on a random survey conducted by the Roads and Traffic Administration (RTA) 78 percent of the respondents who represent all sectors of society favored the abolition of the re-rerouting scheme.

The same respondents cited savings in time, fuel consumption, wear and tear of engine parts and minimizing traffic jams as over-riding reasons for their choice of the abolition of the re-rerouting scheme.

Mayor Jaraula explained in his executive order that the BORAC system has been proven effective and has gained acceptance among stake holders in unloading heavy traffic at the Ysalina Bridge.

With the BORAC system, the RTA will enforce an alternating one-way flow of traffic at the Ysalina Bridge from Vamenta Boulevard in Carmen and Gaerlan Street near the city hall area, backed-up by RTA’s mobile units.

Mayor Jaraula also urged the local residents to cooperate in the city government’s intention to address traffic congestion in the city by observing basic traffic rules and regulations.

City earns P112M in September
by Rubelyn B. Yap/City Information Office
Date Published: 2007-10-11

The City Finance Department has earned for the city government a total of P112,624,030.41 in revenues and other fees for the month of September, this year.

City Treasurer Lino Daral said that last month’s collection has increased by P16,831,896.27 compared to city’s collection in September last year which only reached P95,792,134.14.

Daral explained that the intensified house-to-house tax collection campaign his office launched last month played a major factor in the increase of the city’s income in September. He added that the said collection strategy is in response to the call of City Mayor Constantino G. Jaraula to improve tax collection efficiency and generate more funds necessary for better social services to the Cagayanons.

The September collection is composed of
Realty Tax-- P42,513,686.09;
Business Tax-- P7,512,916.92;
Community Tax-- P373,059.72;
Hospital Fees-- P2,179,126.80;
City Economic Enterprise Department-- P2,834,852;
West Bound Public Terminal and Market-- P304,915.31;
East Bound Public Terminal and Market-- P129,420;
Building Permit-- P573,674.35;
and other collection-- P351,300.22.

The city government also got a share of P48,890,172 from the Internal Revenue Allotment and P6,960,907 from Value Added Tax collection. He added that the city’s collection from January to September has reached P898 million which is more than half of the target collection for the year which amounts P1.3 Billion.

Daral hoped to surpass the target collection by the end of the year with their continuous house-to-house campaign which is now held in barangays Bugo, Puerto, Agusan, Tablon, Cugman, Gusa, Lapasan, Macabalan, Puntod, Kauswagan, Patag, Bulua, Iponan, Carmen, Canitoan, Lumbia and Pagatpat.

Meanwhile, Daral disclosed that his office is now preparing for the barangay election after having received early this month, election materials to be distributed to each precincts in the city with the ballot boxes.

The City Finance Department will be working overtime to prepare for the barangay election until October 30.

Job fair set for call centers
By Farrah Mae J. Nanol
Lourdes College intern

A JOB fair for call centers in Cagayan de Oro City is one of several activities seen to highlight the Oro Best Expo scheduled next week at one of the malls here in the city.

Organizers said call centers like People Support, Link2support, and Arriba Telecontact will be on hand to conduct the job fair that seeks to provide employment to city residents and those outside of Cagayan de Oro.

The activity is being held by the Cagayan de Oro Chamber of Commerce and Industry Foundation Inc. (Oro Chamber) in cooperation with the Philippine Center for Entrepreneurship (PCE).

In tandem with the activities, a series of seminars sponsored under the "Go Negosyo" program focusing on entrepreneurial development for micro and small and medium enterprises will be held in the city.

Go Negosyo executive director Ramon Lopez said they will award the 10 "most inspiring" local business figures on the same day.

Attendance to all business seminars throughout the whole trade fair is free.

[B][FONT="Arial"]Go Negosyo was conceived by the Philippine Center for Entrepreneurship (PCE) to organize business development projects throughout the country.

"We are doing this activity for students and anyone who wants to become an entrepreneur someday so they can have a role model to look up to," Lopez said.

'07 Milolympics, Prisaa get underway next week

THE next week days will be busy for school-based athletes as two important big events will subsequently unfold here.

Arguably the most anticipated in-school meet of the year, the 2007 Milo Little Olympics will open on October 19 at the Don Gregorio Pelaez Sports Center with a dozen number of sports disciplines out to be disputed.

"Dako kini nga competition nga gihulatan sa atong mga estudyante nga atleta sa elementary ug secondary levels kay Mindanao-wide ang scope," said event coordinator Megdonio Llamera.

Schools from as far as Gensan, Cotabato, Iligan and Bukidnon are expected to vie for the top honors in the different sporting competitions such as swimming, athletics, gymnastics, volleyball, taekwondo, chess, table tennis and lawn tennis, among others.

Various field demonstrations will highlight the two-weekend's multifarious meet on Friday's opening ceremony wherein last year's champion Misamis Oriental General Comprehensive High School (MOGCHS) is going to defend its cheer dance title.

The succeeding two weekends will be an exciting rivalry for Mindanao's aspiring young athletes from the private and public school institutions.

"Winning athletes will be treated like no other in Milolympics kay makadawat sila og mga special awards nga sa Nestle-backed event lang nila matilawan," added Llamera.

The Cagayan de Oro Private Schools Athletic Association (Prisaa) Meet will be played almost simultaneously with the Littlelympics on Oct. 23-24 at same venue.

Survivors of the Prisaa Meet will join their counterparts from Cosaa and the Public District Meet, disputing the coveted Regional Palaro berths in the so-called City Triangular Meet. (LLS)

Crafting better future for CdO
By the GO NEGOSYO team
Sunday, October 14, 2007

Cagayan de Oro may not be as popular as other cities in the country but it is certainly headed for progress, having established companies like the Salay Handmade Paper Industries, Inc. (SHAPII) and Limketkai Group of Companies, which provide several jobs to residents in the area.

Starting out as a project that hoped to provide better means of livelihood to the then impoverished town of Salay, SHAPII, a company involved in paper crafting, grew to become a dynamic and vibrant enterprise looked upon by many not only as a source of income, but also as source of pride for the city.

Productively coming up with the original method of using fiber or abaca, leaves of pineapple, and other indigenous materials, Loreta Rafisura, who was initially assisted by eight other civic-minded persons, has gone beyond her original goal of helping town folks. From peddling their products and displaying them on consignment basis at stores in Cagayan de Oro City and even in Manila, Rafisura was able to nurture the motley group of 10 people to its present size of 300.

Despite the challenges it had to face during its course of operation, the company persevered to further improve its network and strengthen its market. Although there were problems like “crab mentality” and sustainability along the way, the company stood firm, guided by the values of transparency, honesty, simplicity, self-reliance and trust in God.

Like Rafisura, Alfonso Lim, the brains behind the remarkable and unprecedented growth of the Limketkai Group, had always desired to contribute to the economic growth of Cagayan de Oro City.

Involved in various sectors such as manufacturing, real estate development, leasing and retailing, Lim is at present pursuing the full execution of the Limketkai Group’s Master Development Plan, which he designed to convert the Limketkai Center into the Central Business District of Cagayan de Oro City.

Once completed, this center will call for the establishment of vertical developments such as high-rise condominiums for offices, financial centers and business process outsourcing or call centers.

Because of his confidence in the city he grew up in and his contributions to its development, Lim is held in high esteem by his townmates.

Rafisura and Lim will each be recognized by Presidential Consultant for Entrepreneurship Jose Concepcion III as an Inspiring CDO Entrepreneur, an award given by the Philippine Center for Entrepreneurship as part of the Go Negosyo sa Cagayan de Oro slated on Oct. 19 at the Atrium, Limketkai Center.

Go Negosyo sa CDO is part of PCE’s latest campaign, the Go Negosyo Caravan, which aims to bring the Go Negosyo forum and expositions to key cities in the country. The Caravan has already visited Cebu, Bacolod, Baguio, Manila, and Pampanga.

Go Negosyo sa CDO is presented by Philippine Airlines, PAGCOR, Globe, Hyundai, PLDT, Smart, Islands Souvenirs, Philippine Trade and Training Center, DTI-OTOP, and RFM Corp. Other partners of the event include The Philippine STAR, The Philippine Daily Inquirer, The Manila Bulletin, GMA Network Inc., RPN9, NBN4, Aspac-Law, Ideal Minds Corporation, The Master’s Lighthouse Foundation and Full Circle Communications.

City Hall eyes creation of coop office (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/static/cag/2007/10/15/bus/city.hall.eyes.creation.of.coop.office..html)

WITH the city named the cooperative capital of the country, the City Council committee on finance moved for the creation of a cooperative office.

The committee said it is now studying the possibility of incorporating it with the Community Improvement Division (CID) and the Community Affairs Division.

Updates on the Kagay-an Festival 2007

Councilor Simeon Licayan noted that the CID has already been functioning as temporary cooperative office by conducting trainings with the constituents.

The move to create an office that will cater to cooperative concerns was proposed by the Cooperative Development Authority (CDA) last week.

Both the CDA and the City Government are now joining efforts to encourage cooperative development in the locality.

At the meeting Sunday, Councilor Ian Mark Nacaya said the city used to have a cooperative office, created by virtue of an executive order and under the auspices of the Cid.

He said incorporating the proposed coop office and the CID may be feasible.

The creation of a separate cooperative office may not be possible as of this time as City Hall financial czars noted that the city has already exceeded the 45 percent ceiling on personal services and cannot hire more personnel to man the proposed office.

Assistant City Treasurer Dixon Baconga said while economic enterprise is an exception to the rule it is not certain whether the creation of the cooperative office will fall under this exception.

The move comes even as the CDA noted that the city is the bedrock of cooperativism and home to the cooperative trailblazers who have been entered into the cooperative hall of fame.

Licayan said the Office of the Senior Citizens Affairs and the Women's Office might as well be incorporated into the same division.

As this developed, the committee will invite during its next meeting heads of the concerned offices to further discuss the proposed legislation. (The Power)

May iba na naman palang tag name ang CDO, "Cooperative Capital of the Philippines".

Sultans of homegrown innovation
By the GO NEGOSYO team
Saturday, October 13, 2007

When life pitched ominous challenges at the fledgling businesses of Alonzo Chiong and Elpidio “Elpie” Paras, calling it quits seemed to be the safe thing to do.

But Chiong and Paras, both natives of Cagayan de Oro, did not yield. Instead, they focused on what their eyes saw amid the storm: an opening for innovation.

In 1980, Chiong established the Oro Asian Automotive Center. Ironically, it was also the same year in which assembly plants of major labels (Toyota and Ford) closed down due to an alarming decline in sales.

With this, Oro Asian tried to pull things together by keeping vehicles aged 10 years and older on the road. It specialized in restoring conked-out cars and catering to other needs of the automotive market under tight circumstances.

In the heyday of his business, Chiong tripped on the idea to manufacture double-cab pickup conversions as, during that time, “new cars were very expensive and hard to come by.”

This design would soon go down in history as the Aero-D (for Aerodynamic), the only locally branded pickup truck to be manufactured as a “light commercial vehicle” using off-the-shelf components.

Paras, meanwhile, had his own share of misfortunes four years after the establishment of his video-rental business, which was known for introducing first the Sony Betamax VCR in their town.

“It was life-threatening,” recalled Paras. “I suffered fractured arms and an injured pelvis after the ultra light plane I was testing came crashing to the ground.”

That plane accident became the turning point in his life, for the only thing he could do afterwards was tinker with a satellite dish that a friend had brought him. The dish, which came from Wisconsin, was shaped to become a bigger and more efficient dish antenna in the welding section of Paras Machinery, Elpie’s expanded business.

Shortly thereafter, clear pictures of satellite TV programming from CNN, AFRTS, and Indonesian TV began flashing in the TV sets of family friends who wanted to catch the latest news and watch the NBA finals direct from the U.S.

Paras’ satellite, like Chiong’s Aero-D, soon became a historical item because for the first time, satellite technology allowed the world to witness accounts of the first EDSA Revolution. The satellite dish also provided Cagayanons a blow-by-blow account of the bloodless coup.

During Aero-D’s production run, which ended in 1998, as commercial-scale importation of used vehicles from Korea and Japan already claimed the new trend, Oro Asian put together some 500 Aero-Ds, with three models, many of which still operate today.

For his efforts in introducing and maintaining the Aero-D, Chiong was honored by the Development Bank of the Philippines (DBP) as a Model Entrepreneur in 1991 and an Outstanding Partner in Progress in 1992. He was cited as the Outstanding Regional Entrepreneur for Northern Mindanao-Automotive Repair during the DBP’s 45th anniversary celebration, which was graced by then President Corazon Aquino.

From his larger-than-life satellite dish, Paras went on with other entrepreneurial quests. He set up Arriba Telecontact, the first homegrown call center in Mindanao, and Paramedix, a medical transcription company. His latest project sets Cagayan de Oro as the spot for the first citywide wireless fidelity (WiFi) Broadband Mesh network in the country.

“In the next three years, when I would be taking a backseat in managing all these ventures and when my children can fully take over, I would like to be on the pilot’s seat and fly to anywhere in the country, land on water when needed and start enjoying the sights that the Philippines’ 7,100 islands have to offer,” said Paras, baptized as the “I.T. Champion of Northern Mindanao.”

On Oct. 19, Chong and Paras will each be recognized by Presidential Consultant for Entrepreneurship Jose Concepcion III as an Inspiring CDO Entrepreneur, an award given by the Philippine Center for Entrepreneurship as part of the Go Negosyo sa Cagayan de Oro slated at the Atrium of the Limketkai Center.

Go Negosyo sa CDO is part of PCE’s latest campaign, the Go Negosyo Caravan, which aims to bring the Go Negosyo forum and expositions in key cities in the country. The Caravan has already visited Cebu, Bacolod, Baguio, Manila, and Pampanga.

Go Negosyo sa Cagayan de Oro is presented by the Philippine Center for Entrepreneurship in partnership with the Cagayan de Oro Chamber of Commerce and Industry. Major partners include PAGCOR, Globe, Hyundai, San Miguel Corp., Splash Corp., STEAG State Power Inc., Limketkai Sons Inc., Unilever, PLDT, Smart, RFM Corp., Concepcion Durables Inc. and Entrepreneurs School of Asia. Media partners include The Philippine STAR, The Philippine Daily Inquirer, Sunstar CDO, GMA Network Inc., RPN9, NBN4, Aspac-Law and Creativoices Productions.

Tinnex’s 100 Days
By Butch D. Enerio

In just one hundred days since the new city administration took office, we now see improvements such as: sidewalks cleared of obstacles; more accessible roads; social problems are looked into; plans of more infrastructures to cater to the needs of the sick and the healthy are on the drawing board; increase in private investments; continuance of laudable projects of the past administration in reaching out to the less privileged members of the community; ensuring the safety and security of the populace; and taking cognizance of the importance of the tourism industry and the environment, among others. All these have been made possible through the efforts of the administration of Mayor Constantino ‘Tinnex’ Jaraula, implemented without political color and where the rule of law suffices, to sustain the development of Cagayan de Oro into a more livable city.

Jaraula, who met with the members of the press at city hall recently, averred that his intentions in governing the city is primarily based on the premise that all are equal within the bounds of the law. The taxpayers must be accorded the benefits due them – the basic services that a government is mandated to deliver to its people - while compelling those who disdain law and order to toe the line.

Mayor Tinnex in a dialogue with members of local media as he lines out his First 100 days in office. Photo by Ed Montalvan/PPA-CdeO

Transparency in governance, which he said on his first day in office, should be maintained at all times for the endeavors of government are solely for the benefits of the constituency it wants to govern.

Jaruala, said that in his one hundred days in office, he was able to reach out to the various sectors of society – political rivals and the skeptics, the religious communities, groups with different persuasions from that of the present government, and succeeded to talk to them into unifying their efforts in developing the city without political color. “For me, politics ends after the campaign period and the elected leaders must deliver the expectations of the general public.”

He envisions a Cagayan de Oro where political peace exists. Politicians will no longer be labeled as pro-administration or -opposition once elected, but rather as majority and minority members of the city council, a cohesive legislative body that is responsive to the development of the city without political or personal motivations.

From the start of his administration in July, an increase of about 30 percent in investments has come to the city, an indication that investors have seen the relatively favorable business climate, “and such gain could further increase if the political harmony prevailing among the city officials is sustained,” Jaraula said.

Jaraula, a veteran lawmaker, having been a councilor, a board member and a congressman, has already come to terms with his present position as the chief executive of the city, a job that does not craft laws and defend them, but rather a job with an enormous responsibility to implement and enforce laws. A job that requires action.

“I was used to crafting laws and policies to aid governance, but now, as chief executive of the city, my responsibility is to abide by those laws and policies to govern and manage the affairs at City Hall,” Jaraula said.

Jaraula expressed optimism in Cagayan de Oro’s capacity to attract more foreign investors to put up businesses here in the city.

In his first 100 days in office, the Mayor is confident that he has boosted the establishment of an ideal local business climate.

He said that in the first 100 days of his administration, he had implemented a continuing drive to clear the streets and sidewalks against illegal vending and structures.

The clearing of sidewalks against vending has received positive feedback from local taxpayers, particularly the members of the Oro Chamber and Promote CDO Foundation who have lauded the Mayor for his strong political will in enforcing the law against sidewalk vending.

But Jaraula pointed out that over and above the physical achievements in the earlier days of his administration, it is the unity among all sectors in the city after the May elections which he considered as his most significant accomplishment. (with a report from CIO)

Taste of a good venture
By the GO NEGOSYO team
Monday, October 15, 2007

The inclination of Kagayanons for good food is inspired by basic food treats, like Cheding’s Peanuts for starter snacks or popular dips like Suka Pinakurat.

But these successful enterprises, like many others, had arduous beginnings.

Stuart del Rosario, the man behind Suka Pinakurat, initially had a restaurant and a lechon manok business, but these ventures failed, resulting in financial problems.

His financial crisis was compounded by health problems as he underwent a heart bypass operation in 2000. As a result, he had to put up all his possessions for sale to support his medical needs.

After recuperating from the operation, Del Rosario found himself greatly inspired to venture into something that he has always been good at - making dips or sauces.

He had previously been concocting various sauces for Iligan’s most popular dishes as his pastime, but this time around, Del Rosario decided to make vinegar-based dipping sauces for profit. Armed with P28,000 as initial fund, Del Rosario devised a whole new product that he felt would beat all other sauces in their town.

He started his innovation with an Iligan specialty called “pinakurat,” which is made from wild boar meat. He immersed it in a boiling coconut vinegar (or sukang tuba) then mixed it with herbs and spices. Sukang Pinakurat coincidentally launched the commercial value of coconut nectar sap or tuba.

Although at first it was hard to sell a virtually unknown product, Del Rosario’s Suka Pinakurat eventually caught the attention of big retailers that have operations in Cagayan de Oro, Davao and Cebu. Suka Pinakurat even made its way to most Visayas and Mindanao regions that direct buyers and distributors took advantage of the product’s marketability.

The increasing demand for Suka Pinakurat forced Del Rosario to increase his volume of raw materials and suppliers. Sukang Tuba is purchased directly from coconut sap farmers, locally known as the mananguetes, who are considered the poorest farmers because they only depend on sari-sari stores and local markets. When Del Rosario decided to increase their produce, these former less-than-P100-earner mananguetes now earn roughly four to five thousand pesos per week.

Del Rosario also managed to have his 40 mananguetes maintain 50 coconut trees from the initial five to seven trees. He was also able to provide livelihood to the women of their barangay by helping in their daily production.

“Success is neither measured by the material things I could now buy nor the comfort that I enjoy,” Del Rosario said. “It is the benevolent feeling that through entrepreneurship, I have instilled life’s significance to the society by doing business with a heart.”

Indeed, a pinch of love in business always does wonders, like how it also was with Isidra “Cheding” Tan.

Cheding acquired Cheding’s Peanuts from her parents-in-law Ramon Tan Chingto and Lim Kim Tua, who left Amoy, China to start a candle and peanuts business in Iligan in the early 1930s.

Starting up with P36.00 as capital and six sacks of peanuts and candles, the formidable husband-wife team managed to grow their business to what became Cheding’s bread and butter several decades later.

In the beginning, Cheding and her family would wake up at the wee hours of the morning, and prepare and cook the toasted peanuts together. Then they would package it in small paper packs and sell them for five centavos and P2.50 for 100 packs at Iligan’s various movie houses.

Today, Cheding’s Peanuts has 20 employees who help in making the business operations a success. Oftentimes, Cheding would personally take charge of mixing salt, water and peanuts and would oversee the toasting process. Cheding is still hands on with the business as the quality control manager.

Her two sons and a daughter-in-law have been given the task of running the business for distribution and shipping, production and operation, and general marketing and promotions, respectively.

“I believe that hard work, perseverance and genuine care for its employees and the community have made Cheding’s Peanuts worth the bite,” Cheding said.

Because of their exceptional contribution to Cagayan de Oro’s entrepreneurial revolution, Del Rosario and Tan will be hailed by Presidential Consultant for Entrepreneurship Jose Concepcion III as one of the Most Inspiring CDO Entrepreneurs, an award given by the Philippine Center for Entrepreneurship as part of the Go Negosyo sa Cagayan de Oro slated on Oct. 19 at the Atrium, Limketkai Center.

^^Trully such big business magnates like Limketkai started out as part of the SME's. It's good that CDO is recognized for having a huge pool of SME's so that Go Negosyo will promote there.

US delegates to visit Oro expo

CITY Mayor Constantino G. Jaraula expressed optimism that the coming visit of a key official of the US Embassy and other American investors here in Cagayan de Oro this week will boost the city's image as a leading investment and tourism destination in the country.

During the flag raising ceremony at the City Hall Monday morning, Mayor Jaraula disclosed that Deputy Chief of Mission Paul Jones of the US Embassy in Manila is arriving Wednesday this week, to attend the Cagayan de Oro Business Enterprises, Services and Trade Exposition or Oro BEST Expo 2007.

According to Jaraula, Jones will be joined by 15 other investors from the US who will visit the city to explore possible areas of business partnerships with local businessmen in Cagayan de Oro and the Northern Mindanao region.

The mayor pointed out that the upcoming visit of US guests will surely send a positive signal to the global community on Cagayan de Oro's image as a safe and peaceful place to visit in this part of Mindanao.

This, amidst reported travel advisories made by the Australian and British governments, warning their respective citizens not to come to Mindanao for security reasons.

Particularly, the American guests will be participating in the Oro BEST Expo's Cocktails for USA exhibitors and partners on October 17 and the Doing Business with the USA forum on October 18 where 50 American companies are expected to participate in the exhibit.

The three-day exposition set October 17 to 19, is sponsored by the Cagayan de Oro Chamber of Commerce and Industry Foundation, Inc. (Oro Chamber). (Press release)

Saving Cagayan de Oro's Best: The 'pigok
By Arnil C. Emata, Ph.D.

(First of two parts)

THE mighty river flows through the heart of the Cagayan de Oro City named by its early settlers as Kalambagohan, "a vernacular word that refers to a place by the river where lush lambago trees grew abundantly."

Lambago (Hibiscus tiliaceus) belongs to the Family Malvaceae that only thrives in low altitude areas such as seashores, riverbanks and areas reached by tidal streams.

For several centuries, the river was home to about 13 commercial fish species and several crustaceans.

Among the fishes, pigok (Mesocriptes cancellatus) is the most popular and sought after due to its excellent meat taste and roe which stands out better than the caviar of the world's famous sturgeon fish.

Thus for Cagayanon's pigok is a delicacy and more than just a household name.

The pigok (it's called pigek in Cotabato City) is a member of the Family
Theraponidae, a group of 5 species commonly called the grunts.

Pigok is found in many freshwater bodies not only in the Philippines but also in the Indo-Pacific Region.

The fish is characterized by a slightly compressed body, thick and fleshy lips, and silvery in color.

Four prominent vertical bands are found at the dorsal part of the body while near ventral part has several small bands, that look like broken lines.

A pigok breeder freshly caught from Tagoloan river can be domesticated for the breeding program.

But pigok may almost have seen the best of its time. Overfishing, degradation of the river, and increase in urban population in Cagayan de Oro City may have brought a decline in the catch of pigok nowadays.

One would be lucky enough to see a pigok in the city markets.

Any catch (which normally is not big enough, a few pieces) easily goes to the fisherman's favorite customer or suki, who would not hesitate to pay the exorbitant price as long as it ends up it his or his guest's dinner table.

It's not unusual, therefore, for the price of this fish to go up to P1,500 per kilo, a price comparable to that of mameng (Napoleon's wrasse) or senorita (humpback grouper) that are exported to the Hongkong live reef-fish market.

Compounding the fish's threat to extinction is that most if not all of the fish caught are sexually mature.

While the ovaries may have been a delicacy as salted roe or guinamos in vernacular, this significantly lessens the chances of recruitment by the species.

This alarming scenario, therefore calls for the conservation of the species to prevent its extinction. There should not be anymore postponement of this action but a call that must be heeded now lest the species will vanish before we know it.

The best option calls for the propagation of species. (To be concluded)

D. in Fish Physiology from Louisiana State University, U.S.A. through the Fulbright Scholarship Award. Ties that bind
By the GO NEGOSYO team
Tuesday, October 16, 2007

For Henrik Kelly Yu, Joanna Lim and Catherine Genabe, big dreams come in big servings. Moreover, their friendship that has stood the test of the time became the catalyst for those big dreams to come true.

It was in the middle of 1998 when the three friends decided to put up a restaurant. An Economics graduate from the Ateneo de Manila, Yu initially worked as brand assistant at the Universal Robina Corp., while Lim and Ganabe were busy polishing their cooking skills at the Center of Culinary Arts in Quezon City as they were already stirred by their passion for good food. When Yu resigned and went back to Cagayan de Oro, he invited Lim and Ganabe to join him in his business that aims to cater to the needs of their hometown. Without hesitation, his two friends took the first plane to Cagayan de Oro.

Their initial plan was to subject Yu’s concept of a restaurant to a market study that would determine the kind of food service that the people in their province needed. Yu personally went to banks and left survey questionnaires with the employees, since they had already decided to tap that market. The study showed that their target market focused on taste quality and price compared to other features like availability of parking space, convenience and accessibility of location, among others. They also discovered that their prospective customers were willing to spend more than a hundred bucks for a meal twice or thrice a week.

Taking these observations into account, Yu, Lim and Genabe then proceeded to a series of taste tests. Every week, they would invite family and friends to try out their food because they believe that these are the people who can truly give “objective judgments.” They eventually developed their menu based on these taste tests.

For the overall look and ambiance of the restaurant, Yu, Lim and Genabe settled on a “traveler’s house” atmosphere, even displaying various souvenirs from their personal travels, like Yu’s Indonesian blowpipe, which he got when he was a member of the Philippine rowing team that competed in the 1997 SEA Games; Lim’s collection of ornamental plates from Belgium, France, and the Netherlands; and Genabe’s masks from Thailand and Venice.

To representing the enormous servings of food and other products, Yu, Lim and Genabe christened their venture “Bigby’s Café and Restaurant.”

On Dec. 8, 1998, Bigby’s Café and Restaurant began operations with 35 personnel, providing quality and delectable meals for tourists and native Cagayanos. After six months in the market, three competitors tried to mimic their concept but they were able to overcome the competition as they pushed for stronger promotional campaigns like going to street soirees, costume parties, town fiestas, and other special occasions. By coming to these affairs, Bigby’s managed to also attract the appetite of the younger market.

Today, Bigby’s Café and Restaurant has 7 branches located in SM City Bacolod, Gaisano City Bacolod, SM City Davao, SM City Cagayan de Oro, Ayala Entertainment Center Cebu, Limketkai Center Cagayan de Oro and Smallville Business Center in Iloilo. In December 2007, Bigby’s will open its newest branch in SM City Cebu.

“Even from the start, we learned and instilled in our business the value of giving more to gain more,” Yu shared. “The rewards of compassion, honesty and hard work will always be tenfold.”

As the long-standing friendship of Yu, Lim and Ganabe paved the way for stronger business partnership through the years, it is the value of family that opened the doors for Fely Pelaez to venture into the food business and for her daughter Mercedes to make SLERS what it is today.

In the old town of Del Monte, Bukidnon, Fely Pelaez would cook country style ham as part of their family tradition during Christmas as the main attraction for the noche buena. She would also sell to friends and other family members, and the demand for her ham increased each year. That’s when she decided to make it a profitable business. Armed with only P10 as initial capital, Pelaez opened SLERS, after the initials of her children Shirley, Litlit, Earl, Ray and Sharon.

Pushing for excellent quality and global competitiveness in the food service arena, Pelaez led SLERS in coordinating with the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) and other government agencies to promote conformity with international standards. SLERS also sought valuable assistance from the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) through its program CESO-BAP to continue upgrading quality service at par with the best in the world.

Pelaez’s advocacy was eventually sustained by her daughter Mercedes Mejia, who was appointed as managing director of SLERS in 1987. This time, Mejia decided to innovate on its corporate policies and “to venture to higher grounds with the same vision of creating quality food the way it has been and the way it should be.” With the support of the entire family, Mejia managed to execute ideas for the business and push for new packaging designs, acknowledging gaps in production and distribution and finding new ways to develop the company’s services.

From only two workers, SLERS now employs 100 people while their featured products also grew in variety. Aside from the original Jamon Cagayan de Oro, SLERS products include tocino, longganisa, bacon, and hotdogs. In January 2006, SLERS introduced their own chicharon brand which easily became the favorite pasalubong from Cagayan de Oro. They also established SLERS Express Meals, a quick service restaurant that sells its products as meals in August. Moreover, SLERS also distributes its products through various supermarkets and at seven company-owned outlets called SLERS PiCA PiCA.

“Over the years, my mother’s vision became the guiding force of SLERS,” Mejia said. “We stood by quality and innovation to make sure we remain a force to reckon with in the market.”

For their exemplary entrepreneurial contribution to the province of Cagayan de Oro, Yu, Lim, Genabe and Mejia will be awarded by Presidential Consultant for Entrepreneurship Jose Concepcion III as Inspiring CDO Entrepreneurs, a recognition given by the Philippine Center for Entrepreneurship as part of the Go Negosyo sa Cagayan de Oro slated on Oct. 19 at the Atrium, Limketkai Center.

Go Negosyo sa CDO is part of PCE’s latest campaign, the Go Negosyo Caravan, which aims to bring Go Negosyo forums and expositions to key cities in the country. The Caravan has already visited Cebu, Bacolod, Baguio, Manila, and Pampanga.

Actually, Roadhouse Cafe is from Valencia City, Bukidnon with a pioneering establishment along Sayre Highway within the Monteclaros Family's property who owns the restaurant. It's a popular stop-over by businessmen plying the CDO-Davao route not just because it's located somewhere halfway between the 2 cities but also the good food and the low prices.

Good food? ...yes..Low Price? Nah!!

It was really low price before when they first opened it. Imagine "roast beef with rice" and a soda costs as low as P55.00 back then, when generally the cost for the same recipe in other restos range between P120 and P220. I think it was also a promotional price. But soon they adjusted it in the current price.

By the way, you should try "Pinutos" located along the highway in Cawayanon, Manolo Fortich, Bukidnon. Its cook is the same cook for the Del Monte Clubhouse famous for its Roast Beef. You can buy roast beef with rice at P65 with the same taste of that DMPI Clubhouse.
