GearX November 27th, 2007, 01:31 AM Oro's Lariba, youngest to compete in Seag
By Lynde Salgados
LIKE any improved athlete in the locality, 13-year-old table tennis wonder Ian Nietes Lariba is not getting much support from the city government.
But the southpaw netter, who consistently ruled the sport since she learned it at a tender age, is set to become the youngest qualifier in the Philippines to ever show wares in the forthcoming South East Asian Games in Thailand.
A Palarong Pambansa grandslam winner, Lariba's biggest break thus far came after she lorded over in two separate events held in Manila early this year.
Undermining her pocketing of the 13-under and 16-under titles of the Age Group championship, Lariba is the future of Philippine table tennis when she also captured the Women's Open diadem of the Stiga-National Selection tourney at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum.
The Women's Open was indeed full of surprises as Lariba completed an 8-0 sweep of the round robin finals at the expense of the more experienced national players.
Those spectacular shows of enormous talent did not escape the probing eyes of Tatap president Victor Valbuena who confidently laid her a seat in the Philippine team.
"As virtually the only kiddy recruit to the national team, I'm not sure if Ian can win a medal in Thailand SEA Games she will be trading shots on the rectangular table against senior rivals. But it's a dream comes true for every athlete to represent his country in SEA Games competition," Ian's mother, Imelda told Sun.Star Cagayan de Oro.
The young Lariba is actually no stranger to playing abroad.
At 10 years old or a year after being taught by her first coach Aldwin Dacayanan the basic rudiments of the game, the freshman student of Corpus Christi high school went on to bag a silver in doubles event of the 11th SEA Juniors Table Tennis Championships 2005 in Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei Darussalam.
Her mom was quick to add, however, that there's a semblance in the past when Ian took the SEA Juniors challenge as a lass and now as a budding incoming junior posing threat in senior category of a high level contest like SEA Games.
"It's hard to imagine a very young Philippine bet squaring off with the best seniors in SEA Games. Anyway, ni-qualify man siya so grab the opportunity na lang and hope for the better things to come her way," the older Lariba, said.
Lariba is in Manila since November 4 for intensive training with the Philippine team. They will be leaving on December 1 for Thailand in a bid to bring honors to the country persistently wracked by controversies.

GearX November 27th, 2007, 01:56 AM Hanjin investing $2 billion for northern Mindanao shipyard
KOREAN FIRM Hanjin Heavy Industries and Construction Corp. is set to invest $2 billion for the construction of a shipyard complex in Mindanao.
A statement released by the Office of the Press Secretary yesterday said the commitment was made by Hanjin President Jeong Sup Shim during his courtesy call on President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo in Malacañang. Mr. Jeong said the new investment is expected to employ around 30,000 people, mostly engineers, welders, and steel fabricators.
Philippine Veterans Investment Development Corp. (Phividec) Administrator Ninfa Albania, who was present during the courtesy call, said in the same statement that the shipping facility would be established at the 3,000-hectare Phividec Industrial Estate in Tagoloan and Villanueva towns in Misamis Oriental.
Mr. Jeong told Mrs. Arroyo that the construction of the general manufacturing plant of the shipbuilding facility would start early next year.
He added that the plant would start creating ships in 2010, and would export around $1.7 billion worth of shipbuilding parts and vessels by 2012.
Hanjin was established in 1937 at Youngdo, Pusan and claims to be the first shipbuilding company in Korea. In 1968, it built the first steel-framed building in Korea.
The construction firm started to penetrate the country in 1973 when it invested on the construction of the Iligan-Butuan Road.
Last year, it signed an agreement with the Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority for the 50-year lease of around 230 hectares of land in the Subic Bay Freeport, where it is building and operating a $1-billion shipbuilding facility.
In June, the shipping firm said it would invest an additional $684 million or roughly P32 billion in its shipyard to address the increasing number of vessels being ordered from the company.
It is expected to deliver 33 medium-sized container vessels worth almost $3 billion in the next two years, and build 82 large-sized ones from 2009 to 2011. — Alexis Douglas B. Romero

GearX November 27th, 2007, 02:10 AM Bayan Communications, Philcom, NTC Meet on Interconnection
By Mike Baños
We're happy to hear the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) in Region X is moving ahead with the interconnection of our local carriers. As far as I know, Misortel is still the only local exchange carrier (LEC) serving Cagayan de Oro that's fully interconnected with the other four: Philcom, Bayan, Cruztelco and Telof (what the locals call Italtel, in the same breath they call Misortel Samsung. Why? For the same reason you call a ref a Frigidaire, toothpaste Colgate and a camera Kodak).
During a recent chat, NTC-X Regional Director Ted Buenavista related to me how the biggies of Bayan Communications (formerly Bayantel) and Philcom sat down with the NTC last Nov. 8 to iron out the kinks on interconnection issues between the two LECs. Happily, there was no opposition from either side and it was agreed an interim connection would be set up while the minor kinks were worked out in Manila by the headquarters of both companies.
We asked some friends in the industry how feasible such an "interim interconnection" was and again, there appears to be no barrier technical or engineering wise. Provided both companies could spare an E1 or two from what they have available for long distance calls, the interconnection doesn't even have to be physical but wireless, and could be made operational in less than a day, provided both companies cooperate.
According to my friends, one E1 has a capacity of 30 lines, with each line capable of handling 10 calls, so one E1 can ostensibly handle up to 300 calls at one time originating from either carrier.
Well and good, but what if one of these LECs refuses to interconnect? The sad truth is, there is no law that penalizes a LEC for delaying its interconnection with others or another local carrier. The NTC has to reach back to pre-war days to Commonwealth Act No. 143 which imposes the princely sum of P200 per day to any LEC which refuses to interconnect.
Ah na na na na na! Even a small operator can afford to pay that and interconnection be damned! What are the implications on us subscribers should this sorry state of affairs continue?
So far, we're pretty lucky that 10 years after deregulating the telecoms industry, at least we have one of the major players in the local telecoms industry fully interconnected. Not only that: according to RD Ted, we have the lowest subscription rates for telephones in Mindanao, which should make Promote CDO President Ruben Vegafria very happy now he has one more thing to harp about!
Know how much a residential line costs in Zamboanga City? (that's some time ago while RD Ted was still assigned there). P1,000 a month, amigos! Who's the dominant carrier there? PLDT, of course. The very same PLDT which now controls Philcom, and very soon, another of the local LECs serving Cagayan de Oro and some surrounding areas, once the NTC approves the terms of the sale.
Philcom is now majority controlled by PLDT, which of course controls most of the long distance circuits in the country through its national backbone. Recall how the sky high long distance tolls of PLDT was one of the major reasons why the national government deregulated the telecoms industry, mainly to loosen PLDT's stranglehold in the long lines and encourage people to call each other more, resulting in lower rates and increased revenues for all players instead of only one.
So how is it the monopoly which deregulation sought to dismantle has somehow managed to slowly regain its domineering position by buying in through the local LECs? This is a loophole the NTC and the national government should plug early before it results in lost business opportunities for the community at large like what Philcom has already been doing in effect to Bayan's wireless subscribers in Cagayan de Oro.
Congressmen Rufus Rodriguez, Lando Uy and if possible Congressmen Bambi Emano and Danny Lagbas: perhaps its time for Congress to amend Commonwealth Act 143 and update the sanctions for those LECs refusing to interconnect to something more realistic for these days.
Perhaps even more important, both the Lower House and the Senate should look deeper into and legislate measures against the virtual monopoly that is slowly being resurrected to bring us back to square one in the bad old days of Philippine telecoms before deregulation where a few oligarchs cornered the enormous profits from the telecoms industry for themselves and the people be damned!

Romero

boju2 November 27th, 2007, 04:17 AM Bayan Communications, Philcom, NTC Meet on Interconnection

Hanjin investing $2 billion for northern Mindanao shipyard

Construction to start early 2008

Korean shipbuilding giant Hanjin Heavy Industries and Construction will invest an additional $2 billion in the Philippines for a shipyard complex in Mindanao.
President Arroyo welcomed yesterday Hanjin’s newest investment during a courtesy call by company president Jeong Sup Shim. Also present were Phividec Industrial Authority administrator Ninfa Albania and Presidential Management Staff (PMS) director general Cerge Remonde.
The latest investment is expected to generate 30,000 jobs, a Palace statement said. Mrs. Arroyo earlier visited Isla Pu-ting Bato in Tondo where she said that Hanjin’s new investment would generate thousands of jobs, especially for welders.
Remonde said that in terms of investment, Hanjin’s Mindanao project would be two times bigger than the shipbuilding complex the company is building in Subic, Zambales.
Hanjin’s $1-billion shipbuilding plant in Subic is one of the biggest facilities of its kind in the Asian region.
Albania said Hanjin’s latest facility is being established at the 3,000-hectare Phividec Industrial Estate in Tagoloan and Villanueva towns in Mi-samis Oriental.
Jeong said construction of the general manufacturing plant of the shipbuilding facility would start early next year.
Under Phase 2, Jeong said the plant would start fabricating ships in 2010, and by 2012 the facility is expected to export some $1.7 billion worth of shipbuilding parts and vessels.
Jeong said Hanjin’s Mindanao plant would employ about 30,000 Filipinos, particularly engineers, welders and steel fabricators.
He recalled that Hanjin launched its first investment in the country in Mindanao with the construction of the Iligan-Butuan Road in 1973.

BOB-bXu November 27th, 2007, 05:16 AM Subic's existing Hanjin facility is up for expansion making it one of their biggest..
But their new project in PHIVIDEC costs is much bigger than Subic as it will entail development from raw to a full scale facility..

ph_matrix November 27th, 2007, 12:02 PM Interconnected sla for NDD, no problem kasi pang NDD kasi may bayad per call, yong article is referring to local interconnection so both telco in the same area code can call each other no fee... so bali dalawang klase yong interconnection, local same area code at saka yong NDD.
The case for new telco dyan sla may problema sa local interconnection kasi the older telco which has already a number of subscriber magahi makipag interconnect locally sa new telco which is kunti pa ang subscriber..
A friends of mine from Philcom suffer also this kind of situation years ago nong bago ba ang Philcom. Ang nangyari daw before si Misortel naman ang ayaw makipag interconnect (locally) kay Philcom, so Philcom do a lot of followup for MisorTel to interconnect, and later part na may congestion na yong interconnection and Philcom subscriber out numbered MisOr, si MisOr naman ang makipag negotiate to increase interconnection circuits kay Philcom.
So in short parang ang big telco ayaw makipag interconnect sa new telco until it's start to hurt them :)
Di ba matagal naman yung interconnection law. Dapat interconnected naman ang mga telecom utilities sa lahat ng lugar sa pinas? Just asking...:):):)

cyrusal November 27th, 2007, 04:15 PM Hanjin to build $2-B shipyard in Mindanao
Construction to start early 2008
By Paolo S. Romero
Tuesday, November 27, 2007
He recalled that Hanjin launched its first investment in the country in Mindanao with the construction of the Iligan-Butuan Road in 1973.

yung Camp Philips ay part ng Barangay Agusan Canyon ng Manolo Fortich. If you travel via Sayre Highway (CDO-Davao), you turn right at Alae Junction. Sa dulo makikita mo yung giant pineapple...that's Camp Philips entrance.
yung Baungon, located south of CDO, you pass by Lumbia Airport going to Talakag tapos there's a junction on the left side where the road descends going to Cabula Bridge (near endpoint of whitewater rafting). The other end of this single-lane bridge is Baungon already.

BAYAN is ready to implement the local interconnect, anytime, anywhere. it's the other party that's dribbling it, delaying the inevitable.
on one hand, we've initiated a semblance of local interconnection by waiving all long distance rates for calls from BAYAN to Philcom... you just have to dial "088", small inconvience lang.
on the other hand, if philcom keeps on delaying this, the market will eventually realize that philcom is being unfair to their subs, hence slowly, but surely the same subs will migrate/convert to either MISORTEL, BAYAN, Globe (guys they're in town na)...

ph_matrix November 28th, 2007, 01:25 PM SM Cagayan de Oro IT Center Proclaimed CDO's 2nd IT Ecozone
By Mike Baños
The local Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) industry takes a new tack with the recent proclamation of the SM Cagayan de Oro (SMCO) IT Center as second IT ecozone by President Gloria Arroyo.
“The SMCO IT Center’s registration as an IT Ecozone was approved by the Philippine Economic Zone Authority through PEZA Board Resolution no. 06-256 dated June 13, 2006 and issued certificate of registration EZ-07-25,” said Bienvenido Paul C. Ferrer III, SM City Cagayan de Oro Mall Manager. “This was formally proclaimed by President Gloria Arroyo on April 24, 2007 through Presidential Proclamation No. 1281.”
The proclamation allows SMCO IT Center to lease out 59,075 square meters (sq.m.) or approximately six hectares of its 83,292 sq.m. total floor area to locators in the ICT industry such as call centers, business process outsourcing firms and software developers. A PEZA registration entitles locators in the SMCO IT Center to PEZA perks such as a five year income tax holiday.
Mr. Ferrer said SMCO IT Center is negotiating with a US-based data collection firm for a 3,500 sq.m. space that will initially house a 300-seat call center which will be expanded to 700 by year end if plans push through. A Swedish call center has also expressed interest in locating in SMCO IT Center for its eventual expansion, he added.
Pueblo de Oro IT Park, which is adjacent to SMCO IT Center, was the first information technology park in Mindanao proclaimed and registered with the PEZA. It is located just beside Pueblo Business Park and SM City Mall and is also close to several residential villages and the Lumbia airport in Uptown Cagayan de Oro.
The park boasts of underground provisions for cables and telecom facilities now used by resident telecom providers for their broadband nodes. In addition, an interconnected electrical distribution system loop is connected to three substations of the local power utility, Cagayan Electric Power and Light Co., ensuring a constant power supply.
At present, Pueblo IT Park hosts Link2Support Inc., the first technical call center in Cagayan de Oro City and the first PEZA-registered call center in Mindanao. It is now constructing an annex to house its expanded operations and is negotiating for a space in the SMCO IT Center for its training center to be operational within the third quarter of this year, Mr. Ferrer said.
Besides the two operational IT ecozones, industry sources report another of the city’s major malls has already filed its application as an IT ecozone with the PEZA and is now only awaiting approval.

Eat your way across the archipelago
By Vangie Baga-Reyes
Inquirer
MANILA, Philippines - You don't have to travel the length of the Philippines to taste wonderful regional dishes. SM Mall of Asia (MOA) houses shops that provide the most dynamic food fare across the regions' from Iloilo's batchoy and Bacolod's chicken inasal to Cagayan de Oro's smoked glazed hams and Pampanga's melt-in-your-mouth halo-halo.
....
Specialty hams
If you want to feel festive, try the Jamon de Cagayan of Slers from Cagayan de Oro City.
The smoked glazed ham is the most popular pasalubong from CDO. That's why the owners put up a kiosk at MOA to make it more accessible to patrons.
It's been more than three decades since the ham was first introduced, and people still patronize the products, says Mercedes "Litlit" Pelaez Mejia, president of Slers Industries, Inc. and daughter of Fely Pelaez, the founder of Slers.
Slers, an acronym of the names of Fely's children Shirley, Litlit, Earl, Rey and Sharon, started as a personal culinary endeavor in 1969, when Fely learned to prepare smoked country ham in her home in Del Monte, Bukidnon. Her husband used to work for the then American-owned Del Monte plant in Bukidnon.
What started as a small hobby became a cottage industry, and later a family corporation. The ham is also sold in Iligan City.
Slers hams are vacuum-packed. Aside from smoked Jamon de Cagayan, which is sold for P590 per kilo, Slers also sells other processed meat products, such as Smoked Pork Loin (P160) and Smoked Country Bacon (P160).
It also has Chicharon Special (with meat) at P100 per 150 g and Regular (without meat) at P35 per 80g.

SLERS PiCA PiCA SIGNS UP ITS’ FIRST FRANCHISE
October 19th, 2007
SLERS began in 1969 when Fely Pelaez prepared delicious smoked country ham, for her family in Del Monte, Bukidnon. What started as a culinary endeavor has become a family corporation. The ham eventually became popular pasalubong item of Cagayan de Oro.
SLERS is a dynamic organization looking to expand present products and markets. In January of 2006, it started chicharon production and started selling chicharon a kiosk style sales outlet around Cagayan de Oro. Seizing an opportunity when it sees a good one, the idea of Franchising became a new focus. Not wanting the stand/kiosk to carry a single product entity has expanded its’ product line to include banana chips.
Today`s Franchise Contract Signing launches theory into practice. It marks another important milestone in the journey of SLERS. With the guidance of Armando (Butz) Bartolome, the Philippine Franchise Guru, this signing ceremony is but a little step in the giant leap towards the brand recognition and market expansion that SLERS hopes to achieve.
PiCA PiCA is a marketing concept developed by SLERS to serve its products to the public at a cheaper price. The commitment of SLERS to quality, nutritious value, food safety, research and development is attested by the company’s long standing relationships with the leading supermarket chains and the continuing consumption by the general public. The operation entails minimal storage where refrigeration, preparation and cooking are not required. Visit their website:www.picapica.biz for more details on franchising.
Franchising as a method of marketing and distribution is part of the development plan created for SLERS by the business advisory project of the Canadian Government, CESO-BAP and CVED. CESO-BAP is a bilateral project between the Philippines and Canada aimed at increasing the operating effectiveness of Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises (SMEs) in the Visayas and Mindanao. Among its programs and services are “Business Advisory Services” to provide technical assistance and business consultancy services to SMEs like SLERS that will enhance their global competitiveness through improved marketing, products, technology, production practices, organization and management systems.

not yet, still being worked on. but we're getting there. we need to complete the local interconnection so that:
1) subscribers are not charged long distance at all;
2) to comply with the NTC mandated local interconnection;
there is a corresponding penalty with regard failure to comply. we will keep you updated.

torvics November 29th, 2007, 11:25 AM Good! im planig to get bayan since di pa rin kinakabit MTI ko.
the beauty of wireless landline is that we don't have to worry about cables being stolen, waiting for the installation crew to come. BWL is activated for local calls (only MISORTEL at this point), hence you get immediate service.
please feel free to visit at Legacy, I will give you personal discount on the unit cost. ;-)
torvics November 29th, 2007, 11:28 AM MagBayan ka nalang FX, baka sa susunod na panahon magmahal pa ng lalo ang Philcom dahil mapressure ng PLDT.
actually, philcom business line is more expensive at P610.00 per month vs a BWL at only P599.00 with all the features and unlimited calls thrown in... :-)
ph_matrix November 29th, 2007, 03:07 PM Actually that's the reason why we give up our cruztelco line in favor of bayan wireless here in butuan, sge kawaton ang cables nla daw so palaging no dialtone yong phone namin, even cruztelco is much cheaper than bayan but i go for bayantel, I can say no downtime so far and ok sya kasi pag my party at yong time ng kasal ng sister ko, dala2x ko yong bayan wireless sa sasakyan ! as in maraming plus points.. however @torvics, I cant connect it to our fax machine, pero ok lang... whos faxing this days.. lol

BOB-bXu November 29th, 2007, 03:33 PM does Philcom enjoy almost the same patronage as MISORTEL there?
Philcom patronage here in Butuan ranks second only to Bayan, almost at par with Cruztel.
BXU and CGY link is "landlined" ...meaning you can make a call at each points WITHOUT any long distance charge...(BAYAN-Misortel link)
I guess no other citylinks, regions apart enjoys that linkage..

Peace forum in Oro (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/static/cag/2007/12/01/news/peace.forum.in.oro.html)
By Danilo V. Adorador III
PEACE educators throughout Mindanao are gathering in Cagayan de Oro for a three-day workshop aimed preparing them for the soon-to-be institutionalized Peace Education curriculum.
Dr. Toh Swee-hin, a UNESCO laureate for peace education, led the "Culture of Peace Workshop" for top-level educators of the Mindanao State University (MSU) system--the first educational institution to adopt a curriculum based on peace context.
MSU President Ricardo de Leon said the Nov.29-Dec. 1 workshop aims to immerse MSU system officials to the Peace Education curriculum, and for them to formulate policies in support of the program.
MSU, which aims to be the first "Peace University" in the country according to Dr. de Leon, will start using the peace-based curriculum next year and is projected to produce its first batch of graduates in 2010.
Initially, Peace Education literacy will be used on civic welfare subject, and will eventually be embedded in other courses as well, said de Leon.
De Leon underscored the advancement of Peace Education initiatives in Mindanao, saying this provides another alternative in the continuing search for a lasting solution of conflict in the island.
Taught with "peace" lessons that also delve on conflict understanding, MSU students can develop productive and peaceful attitude that they can impart on their community after graduation, the MSU president said.
"The MSU system is laboratory for integration, and this is where Peace Education is most needed so that we can teach our younger generation to appreciate their cultural and religious differences and learn from each other," de Leon told this paper.

Council maps security plan (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/static/cag/2007/12/01/news/council.maps.security.plan.html)
By Lizanilla J. Amarga
THE City Peace and Order Council (CPOC) is now coming out with a one "Public Safety Plan" that would be used to avert any terrorist assault against City Hall.
This developed as intelligence reports revealed that Cagayan de Oro City is still among the primary targets of terrorist group Jemaah Islamiyah and its local ally, the Abu Sayyaf.
Reports disclosed that while the Abu Sayaf in Basilan and Jolo are now being hunted down by authorities after the July 12 beheading incident of Philippine Marines, some of bandits here in Cagayan de Oro are mapping up their next moves to take the pressure off its forces on Basilan and Jolo islands.
Among all key cities in Mindanao, terrorist bombers have so far spared this city from any of their terrorist attacks.
According to City Councilor Ian Mark Nacaya, CPOC-CDO chairman City Mayor Constantino Jaraula is not waiting for such assault to happen.
The city mayor has now ordered the creation of a Public Safety Plan.
The Safety Plan is also a campaign against illegal drugs and other forms of criminalities.

ona December 1st, 2007, 01:55 PM SM Cagayan de Oro IT Center Proclaimed CDO's 2nd IT Ecozone

Farirah December 2nd, 2007, 07:08 AM Hanjin to build $2-B shipyard in Mindanao
Construction to start early 2008
By Paolo S. Romero
Tuesday, November 27, 2007

CdeO asks for IT help
http://themindanaocurrent.blogspot.com/2007/12/cdeo-asks-for-it-help.html
Oro gov’t seeks help from business moguls in setting-up proposed computerization program
With the advent of modern information technology, the city government of Cagayan de Oro is seeking the corporate expertise and management strategies from the city’s top business tycoons, particularly on in-house computerization program.
The move was revealed by City Mayor Constantino “Tinnex” Jaraula during yesterday’s flag raising ceremony at City Hall even as he invites some local business magnate to assist the city on his plan to put-up a City Hall-wide interconnection computerization program.
Noting their tested and proven computer-based management style, Mayor Jaraula said the inputs of the invited businessmen will definitely help the city government in the realization of the proposed computerization program.
The proposed computerization program, which will hopefully connect all departments and offices at City Hall through the internet connection, is part of the city mayor’s thrusts to enhance efficiency and effectiveness on local governance.
Presently, only a few departments and offices of the city government are connected with each other through the so-called ‘information highway’ or internet.
With an inter-department computer networking in place, Mayor Jaraula said that monitoring of the city government’s cash flow that reflects up-to-date figures on the city’s income and expenditures, realty and business taxes, and other vital data and information would be readily accessible to the city officials and the transacting public.
The city chief executive expressed optimism that the City Hall’s full computerization program would mean better and faster delivery of basic services to the people, aside from increasing employees’ productivity and economical use of office supplies and manpower resources.
Mayor Jaraula and the group of businessmen are expected to discuss the matter during a scheduled ‘systems review” tomorrow, November 28, a regular policy-setting, performance evaluation and assessment gathering to be attended by all City Hall department heads and chiefs of office. (CIO)

You're @ph_matrix! The Camaman-an-Indahag-Libona road is already there as what @GearX said, but it needs more concretion, especially the Indahag-Libona portion. Anyway, there is already a plan by the local government to transform the existing road to 2-4 or 2-6 lanes for it to become a new national highway. The good thing about this new national highway is that you can directly go to LKK complex thru the already proposed Luminarias Village, Macajalar road that will connect the existing Sentro Camaman-an road. For this, the Bukidnonons especially from Libona can save time and money when they are about to travel to CDO. ^^

PiCA PiCA is a one-stop-shop that sells packed favorites, such as Chicharon, Banana Chips, Peanuts and Sukang Tuba. The operation entails minimal storage where refrigeration, preparation and cooking are not required.
The mother company of PiCA PiCA is SLERS, which began in 1969, when Fely Pelaez prepared delicious smoked country ham for her family in Del Monte, Bukidnon. The ham was so well-liked that the hobby turned into a corporation.

Lanise, Claveria, Misamis Oriental – The eastern towns in the second congressional district of this town may have been surpassed in the past by their counterparts in the west, but not for long. The completion of the Gingoog-Claveria-Villanueva road in a few months time is expected to harness the potential of the hinterlands especially in the areas traversed by the vital artery.
"This road will cut travel time between Gingoog and Cagayan de Oro by 50 percent," said Gov. Oscar S. Moreno during the opening day of the "Farmers Field Day and Techno-Forum" hosted by the Claveria Experiment Station of the Department of Agriculture (DA).
"Rep. Bambi Emano (1st District, Mis.Or.) and Rep. Danny Lagbas (2nd District, Mis. Or.) have both committed their support to the completion of this vital road which will make the physical integration of these areas with Cagayan de Oro and Bukidnon a reality," he added.
The P114.2-million Palapay Bridge in Barangay Binakalan, Gingoog City was completed May 15, 2007 with the access road scheduled for completion by the end of this year. The project covers the 203-meter long two-lane prestressed concrete bridge with eight spans each mounted on steel H-piles and 200 meters concrete pavement approaches.
During its latest meeting last Nov. 8, the Region 10 Project Monitoring Committee (RPMC) chaired by NEDA-10, the DPWH-10 confirmed that the Gingoog side of the P630-million improvement/concreting of the Gingoog-Claveria-Villanueva road was almost complete.
"The Gingoog side is almost complete except for a 100-meter gap in the second approach which is now being bulldozed," said Engr. Albert Zuleta, DPWH-10. "We are just awaiting the next release of funds for its completion."
Moreno exhorted the farmers present to forget the past and move forward with the physical integration of the province. The Claveria Experiment Station was torched by communist guerrillas in 1985 but revitalized in March 15, 2988.
"It is still not too late for us to rise from the ashes of 1985," Moreno said in the vernacular. "Your future is only limited by your imagination."
Carlota S. Madriaga, CES station superintendent, echoed a similar sentiment as she exhorted the farmers present to take advantage of the value-adding technologies available to them from the station.
Among the technologies developed in-station by the CES and already available for dissemination were green corn production technology which is a native hybrid open pollinated variety(OPV) and non-GMO strain that grows well in a wide range of elevations and soil types and suitable for both human consumption and animal feeds; lettuce production technology for head lettuce suitable for high elevation areas such as iceberg ad butter head types; loose leaf varieties suitable for warmer areas such as wide open/curly and wide open/smooth; carrot production technology which can produce an average yield of 20,000 kgs per hectare and a return of P100,000 @ P5/kg. and organic vegetable production management in hilly land typical of the hinterlands of Misamis Oriental's eastern towns.
The CES also invited resource speakers from outside the station to present their value-adding technologies to farmers during the two-day field day and techno forum.
Technologies presented included "Biocontrol in Crucifers" from the RCPC; "Market Opportunities for Soybean" presented by San Miguel Corp.; demos on value-adding technologies like fruit and vegetables (Institute of Human Ecology and Food Science, Misamis Oriental State College of Agriculture & Technology); bonsai/dish garden (NMOH) and product presentations by participating seed and fertilizer companies.
The Misamis Oriental Eastern Towns or Misoret is a collective term for the towns from Balingasag to Kinoguitan conceived to be the province's food basket. The Gingoog Bay Development Area, lying along Balingoan to Magsaysay also covers mineral deposits, farm products and eco-tourism, in addition to agri-aqua culture and processing.
torvics December 3rd, 2007, 07:36 AM ows? may cellphone service ang bayan??
it's not cellphone... it's wireless landline. uses the area code of landline service and thus is restricted within the locality of the said area code. unlike cellphone which you can bring & use anywhere there's a cell site. but, because Bayan is landline, any calls made to other landline service is not charged long distance. unlike cellphone, calls made to landline is charged at least P8.00 per minute.
