illegal man gyud ning pirated DVD wala man gyud na solved sa atong guberno ;)

Oro qualifies for int'l chess event
By Lynde Salgados

CAGAYAN de Oro natives Johnnel Balquin and Jerry Nodado made sure they're qualified to play in the open category of the next international chess event the country will be hosting in 2008.

This, after Balquin and Nodado placed second and third behind eventual winner Marlon Ricafort in the challenger's division of the 3rd Pichay Cup International Open concluded last Saturday at the Duty Free Fiesta Mall in Para¤aque City.

In nine-round Swiss, the 27-year-old Balquin yielded just one defeat at the hands of Ricafort (6th round) while being held to a draw by Iligan native, Bengt Largo (8th round) and Tondo pride Edmundo Gatus in the final round.

"With or without support, dinhe makita nga dili gyod gapaka-ulaw atong mga players sa national event kay gabanig `ta sa top-10 among a total of 60 participants," Balquin said.

Another Cagayanon, Christian Arroyo, a college varsity standout of Far Eastern University, tried his best with black but could only produce a draw with Ricafort in the decisive round to share fourth to ninth places with fellow 6.5 pointers Gatus, Largo, Jerry Areque, Noel dela Cruz and Ferdinand Leysa.

$.4-M windfall from Blatter
By Joaquin Henson
Tuesday, December 11, 2007

FIFA (Federation Internationale de Football Association) president Joseph Blatter of Switzerland announced an early Christmas present of $400,000 for the Philippine Football Federation (PFF) in the highlight of a gala dinner celebration of the sport’s 100th anniversary in the country at the Sofitel Philippine Plaza Hotel the other night.

Blatter, 71, was in town for an overnight visit with Asian Football Confederation (AFC) president Mohammed Bin Hammam of Qatar and a traveling staff of six from the FIFA headquarters in Zurich.

Speaking before over 500 guests in a P2,500-a-plate fund-raising event, Blatter called football “the game of the people” as he encouraged more Filipinos to play the game where there are no distinctions of race, culture, religion, social class and physical attributes.

“Football is the most intelligent team sport in the world,” said Blatter, the eighth FIFA president since the organization was founded in Paris in 1904. “It requires a big surface, has 11 players against 11 players sharing one ball with no timeouts. It’s the game for everybody.”

The $400,000 donation is FIFA’s third cash top-up for the PFF aside from its usual subsidy of $250,000 a year. FIFA doles out $1 million every four years to each of its 208 member countries aside from grants under the “goals” program.

Immediate past PFF president Johnny Romualdez said the first $400,000 donation was for the construction of a training center in Barotac Nuevo, Iloilo, and five administration buildings in Prosperidad, Agusan del Sur, Zamboanga City, Bago City, Negros Occidental, Cagayan de Oro and Los Baños, Laguna. The second donation was for the construction of a three-story PFF building, called the House of Football, in Pasig to be inaugurated next month.

Romualdez said newly elected PFF president Jose Mari Martinez will decide with the Board how to use the third donation. Infrastructure is a key priority and a likely option is to lay out a world-class artificial turf in a venue which the PFF can use exclusively and a semi-pro league can call its home.

“FIFA money for local tournaments is out of the question,” said Romualdez. “It’s important that we acquire and maintain a field of international standards. A semi-pro league is a missing component in our program. Without a league, there is no crowd. Without a crowd, there are no stars. Without TV, there is no crowd. Without a league where our best players can play 30 to 40 matches a year, there can never be a strong national team.”

Blatter said he was touched by Philippine Sports Association for the Differently Abled president Mike Barredo’s appeal to include participation of his sector in the 2010 World Cup. Barredo, a former national football player, lost his eyesight in an accident. Blatter also paid tribute to the late PFF secretary-general Chris Monfort, who was killed in a car mishap, and 85-year-old former FIFA referee Fernando Alvarez, a Filipino now based in San Francisco.

Martinez laid out the red carpet for Blatter and vowed to bring Philippine football back on its feet with the support of the 32 provincial associations. “Mr. Blatter’s visit will inspire us to do more for football than ever before,” he said.

Former Rep. Charlie Cojuangco, the Negros Occidental Football Association president, described Blatter as “a good example of what an international politician should be in form and substance.” He added, “Mr. Blatter is essential at this time not only for his leadership but also for his passion for football.”

For his part, Hammam urged the PFF “to restructure the game, clubs, leagues and district associations” in the campaign to make football the No. 1 sport in the country, guaranteeing support from FIFA and AFC in the effort. “The future is Asia ,” said Hamman. “It’s a mandate that we are tasked to do.”

Hammam said the AFC was formed in Manila on May 8, 1954 – his birthday, which is why the Philippines is close to his heart. He credited Blatter for football’s progress as a business and industry. From 2003 to 2006, FIFA earned a net profit of $144 million from revenues of $1.64 billion.

To cap the gala celebration, Blatter and Martinez handed out centennial awards for milestone contributions in the history of Philippine football. The awardees were Nomads, Lions, Blue Guards and the Cheng Hua Tigers (team category), the Armed Forces of the Philippines, Philippine Army, Philippine Air Force, Philippine Navy, University of Santo Tomas, San Beda and Ateneo (outstanding institutions), Sy Peng Sam and Juan Cutillas (outstanding coaches), Alvarez (outstanding referee), Menchu Genato-Henson (outstanding women’s football), Paulino Alcantara (outstanding player, pre-war), Eddie Pacheco (outstanding player, post-war), Lino Castillejo (outstanding volunteerism) and former PFF presidents Rene Adad (for the Coke Go For Goal project) and Romualdez (for the Kasibulan under-19 and 6-12 programs).

The late Alcantara was represented by his great grandnephew Ambassador Juan Rocha. Alcantara, a Filipino-Spanish mestizo from Iloilo, saw action for the Philippine team in 1916-18 and FC Barcelona up to 1927. He is the only Filipino ever to play for a European club and remains Barcelona’s all-time leading scorer.

City government to identify tourist spots in each barangay (http://mwamaarkhh.multiply.com/journal)
By MARK D. FRANCISCO

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY – CAGAYAN de Oro will map out tourism destinations in each of the city’s 80 barangays.

This was the assurance posed by Councilor Alden Bacal, chair of the City Council committee on tourism, in response to the challenge made by Tourism Assistant Secretary Cynthia Carrion to make Cagayan de Oro more tourist-inducing.

Carrion was in the city over the weekend not just to attend the first ever Northern Mindanao-wide wellness exposition but to make her evaluation on current tourism statistics here especially in the field of medical tourism.

Medical tourism was the focus and intent of the wellness exposition and Carrion was the tourism assistant secretary on wellness.

During a news conference, Carrion pointed out that the wellness tourism industry is not just limited to medical tourism but also encompasses spas and retirement centers.

At this point, Catalino Chan, Department of Tourism (DOT) 10 director, told Carrion that plans are now in the pipeline to construct a retirement center for senior citizens – a first in Northern Mindanao – in Malaybalay City , the capital of Bukidnon.

Chan said in the same news conference that Bukidnon is an ideal place for a retirement center for senior citizens because of its conducive cooler climate over the rest of the tropical island of Mindanao .

Carrion also encouraged and exhorted the local tourist industry to construct more spas in the region.

Chan said there are already 83 establishments in the city which offer spa services and these are being regulated by DOT so that ingredients used in their massage and body scrub services are of the utmost quality.

“Some have even used indigenous ingredients such as kalachuchi, jasmine and dama de noche as scented oils,” Chan reported.

To that effect, Carrion assured that DOT had already inked an agreement with the Bureau of Food and Drugs (BFAD) to join together in monitoring that spas use substances only as what are specified in law.

In a separate news conference, Ofelia del Bando, Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) 10 director, said that they had already institutionalized massage therapy as one of the associate courses offered by TESDA-accredited schools.

Carrion welcomed this development, saying that masseurs and masseuses are badly needed in more developed wellness economies abroad.

“There is a great potential in this industry because it is one worker for one customer; meaning one masseur or one masseuse will service one customer at a time,” Chan added.

During the 1st Northern Mindanao wellness exposition held over the weekend, 38 establishments including spas, beauty centers and those selling organic food, herbal medicine and other health suppliers exhibited their products and services.

Lectures on corresponding topics were also conducted.

Mayor Jaraula Allows Sidewalk Vendors To Sell Inside Cogon, Carmen Mkts. For ‘free’ (http://www.cagayandeoro.gov.ph/?page=news&id=2147483647)
by Rubelyn B. Yap/city Information Office

City Mayor Constantino “Tinnex” Jaraula today allowed an estimated 50 sidewalk vendors to ply their trade at the 2nd floor of Carmen and 3rd floor of Cogon public markets starting Tuesday, December 11 until December 31 this year- free of charge.

Mayor Jaraula made the decision even as he stood firm on his policy not to allow sidewalk vending and instead relocate the vendors inside the city’s two public markets where they can temporarily sell their products within a month with no market rental fees.

In today’s meeting with the leaders of the group of sidewalk vendors, Mayor Jaraula emphasized that the move is in line with the city government’s drive to maintain street sanitation, orderliness and cleanliness.

He asked the group of vendors affected by the intensified sidewalk clearing operations to abide with the law, explaining that he understood their plight by offering them a legal remedy through “free” vending inside the Cogon and Carmen markets for a given period of time. Mayor Jaraula stressed that it would be very hard for him to allow them to continue selling on the sidewalk while compromising legitimate market vendors who are paying space rental fees.

The city mayor asked for understanding from the sidewalk vendors’ group saying that though he felt compassion with their plight, his kind understanding is not limitless citing that the city government is only after for their own welfare and benefit.

Earlier, Mayor Jaraula ordered Cagayan de Oro City Police director Col. Antonio Montalba and Roads and Traffic Administration head P./Supt. Filipino Amoguis to strictly monitor sidewalk vendors plying their trade around the city.

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY - A high school student was reported missing when a hanging bridge snapped and hurled about 100 spectators of a river rafting race into the Cagayan de Oro river Tuesday morning.

The accident occurred around 11:30 a.m. during the first leg of a White Water Rafting Adventure race in Barangay Dansolihan in this city.

Racers who saw the incident immediately rushed to help the victims who clambered onto the floating rafts to avoid being dragged by the river's strong current.

All those who fell were safely rescued except for one, a student of Mambuaya High School.

The student was still missing as of posting time.

A river guide was also slightly injured after several victims fell on him as his raft was crossing under the bridge when it snapped.

Malou Domingo of the Cagayan de Oro White Water Rafting Adventure, one the event's organizers, said that the spectators had crowded on the hanging bridge to get a better look of the celebrities who joined the race.

"As the raft that the celebrities were riding approached the hanging bridge, many of the viewers ran to the bridge to get a good look. That's when the rope supporting one side of the bridge snapped," said Domingo.

"Thank God no one was seriously hurt," said Domingo whose son, Kim, was one of those slightly injured.

Ambulances who were in the area took some of the victims to a nearby hospital.

They were immediately discharged. Rescuers are still searching for the missing student. -

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY – More than 100 spectators watching a river rafting race plummeted into the Cagayan de Oro river Tuesday when a hanging bridge they were using suddenly snapped.

No serious injuries were reported as rescue workers and racers helped the spectators, most of whom were high school students on the lookout for celebrities.

A student of Mambuaya High School who was reported missing has been accounted for, barangay officials said.

The accident happened at around 11:30 a.m. during the first leg of a white water rafting adventure race in Barangay Dansolihan, this city.

kidding aside, they should really hasten it up. otherwise maghinulatay lang, what's the point? if both sees it that there will be a demand, prepare the infrastructure. otherwise, these convention organizers will just choose other cities over cdo.

'RoRo' race opens in Oro (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/static/cag/2007/12/12/life/.roro.race.opens.in.oro.html)
By Stephen Capillas

THE Development Bank of the Philippines (DBP) launched the inter-island race "Ready, Set, RoRo!" in Divisoria, Cagayan de Oro City in simple ceremonies Tuesday.

In an interview with local media last Monday, DBP Regional Head Sisinio Narisma said the launching is the second time for DBP to sponsor an inter-island race, with the first being done in Davao City.

"The event is part of the bank's efforts at promoting the RoRo service of the national government which facilitates the immediate delivery of food produce as well as transport to various points in the country," Narisma told Sun.Star Cagayan de Oro.

Narisma explained the activity, an "Amazing Race" type of event, would help draw public attention on the benefits offered by the RoRo service to the country's food producers and buyers.

Event organizers assured during Monday's briefing with local media that the second edition of the "Ready, Set, RoRo!" event would be more exciting and informative as contestants cross the country's major islands from December 11-15, 2007.

The kick-off point for the 1,157 kilometer race starts in Cagayan de Oro and covers land and sea travel via RoRo through 10 more key RoRo destinations before the finish line at the Market! Market! in Taguig City.

Press statements revealed 10 teams composed of one celebrity and two non-celebrity participants will undergo numerous physical and mental challenges about the RoRo.

The organizers said the event will focus on the key cities/islands the contestants will visit and even the different specialty products of the province.

Among the celebrities who signified their participation and were spotted during last Monday's media briefing are Pinoy Big Brother's Nene Tamayo and Chix Alcala; Sex Bomb dancer Jopay Paguia, actors Ryan Eigenmann and Brad Murdoch; actors Alyssa Alano, Anna Larrucea, Paw Diaz, and Jackie Rivas; stand-up comedian Jayo; and last year's "Ready, Set, RoRo!" runner-up, AJ Dee.

Pabillore and company target 4 golds in Seag karatedo (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/static/cag/2007/12/12/sports/pabillore.and.company.target.4.golds.in.seag.karatedo.html)
By Lynde Salgados

"MAKA-gold lage `ta (We really can hit gold)" were the first words of Joey Pabillore who vowed to give his best as he leads the 15-man Philippine karatedo team to the 24th Southeast Asian (SEA) Games.

The 29-year-old Pabillore and company left for Thailand on Monday with a bright hope that they could nail at least four golds in SEA Games' karatedo competition.

With grandslam winner Gretchen Malalad now taking her job seriously as TV reporter of ABS-CBN and the other female holdover Marna Pabillore exploring a new life in the US, the comebacking Joey is probably the only one left in the roster of RP karatekas with vast experience and colorful past to build confidence.

"Ako ra ang nabilin nga medalist ini nga lineup pero kombate gihapon `ta. (I am the only one left in this lineup, but we will still fight) We're targetting two golds each in male and female divisions of the karatedo event," Joey told Sun.Star Cagayan de Oro.

Although confiding he never had any support from the city government of Cagayan de Oro, the 2001 Malaysia SEA Games gold medalist said he has been excited about the thought of bringing honors again to the country and the poor Filipino people who could better well understand the true meaning of heroism.

"Maningkamot lang `ta nga maka-gold pag-usab. Of course, malipay ta'g dako kon makahunahuna ang siyudad paghatag og incentives sa mga winning athletes. Adtong nagdaug ko sa Malaysia gipahulat-hulat baya mi'g usa ka oras ayha gi-entertain sa City Hall (We will just hope for the best. Of course, we will feel honored if the city would give incentives to the winning athletes. The last time I won a title in Malaysia, we waited for an hour before the City Hall entertained us)," recalled Joey, who also bagged a silver in Vietnam (2003) and settled for a bronze when Mandaue City, Philippines hosted the karatedo SEA Games meet in 2005.

Joey said their previous tune-up bouts in Europe against much bigger and fancied opponents are experiences that would make them confident in their quest for SEA Games glory.

Attention: Children with special needs (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/static/cag/2007/12/12/feat/attention.children.with.special.needs.html)
By Dr. Elizabeth Bagares-Poyogao

IS YOUR child having communication problems? Is your child hyperactive or having difficulty interacting with other children? Is your child unusually exceptional? If yes, then your child may have developmental problems, which include learning disorders, autism, attention-deficit disorder and other behavioral disorders.

With early recognition and prompt intervention, the future of these disabilities in your children will look bright. Not only doctors but also parents and caretakers should be motivated to keep an eye on these developmental disorders.

In fact, special education and speech therapy program have been implemented with the emergence of these disorders nowadays.

Special Education focuses on academic enhancement, behavior therapy, self-help skills training, motor development, communication and social skills development.

With this education program, the child will be assessed and evaluated by a Special Education (SPED) teacher to determine the child's level of learning and determine his/her special needs.

Based on the child's assessment, he will have an individualized program to be implemented by the SPED teacher. The child's education program will be discussed thoroughly with the parents or guardians to encourage awareness and involvement on their part not only in goal implementation but also in consistency of behavior modification.

Speech Therapy Program focuses on speech improvement on children with language delay and learning disorders. A speech therapist will evaluate the child and create a program, which will be implemented by the SPED teacher.

A Special Education teacher who has been working for more than 5 years now in a school in Manila but is currently based here in Cagayan de Oro City intends to offer her services to children with special needs. Her services cater to children with Autism, Pervasive Developmental Disorder, Mental Retardation, Attention Deficit/Hyperactive Disorder, Global Developmental Delay and Down syndrome. She also extends her services to children with specific learning disability such as reading problem, writing/spelling difficulty, difficulty in math to name a few. The frequency of her sessions will depend on the result of the child's assessment. The cost per session is reasonable. Therapy and instructional materials are all provided for.

If you are interested, please don't hesitate to contact Teacher Chie @ Cherub Tutorial Clinic, 9-21 St. Nazareth, Cagayan de Oro City or you may text at # 0918-4779852.

Early recognition results in prompt intervention and eventually a bright future for your child.

City Hall to file charges vs Scantel (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/static/cag/2007/12/12/news/city.hall.to.file.charges.vs.scantel.html)
By Danilo V. Adorador III

CAGAYAN de Oro Mayor Constantino Jaruala said City Hall may have to see the erring contractor in court as the deadline for the bungled P49 million Barangay Telephone System Project approaches.

Jaraula has given Supplier Contractor and Networking Telecommunication (Scantel) Inc. until this year-end to complete the rural telephone project, which has been stalled since 2003 despite the P31 million already paid to the contractor.

According to reports, the political opposition agreed to file plunder charges against Vice-Mayor Vicente Emano and other administration officials for various infrastructure projects, supposedly also including the Scantel phone project.

Jaraula vowed to take legal action "if the company won't comply with the deadline to finish the project," but said over a phone interview that he won't include City Hall officials who are involved in the project.

"They have nothing to do with the failures of Scantel. I will not include them (City Hall officials) in the case, if ever one is filed against the contractor," the mayor said.

City Hall has earlier rejected Scantel's proposal for fresh allocations to jumpstart the mothballed project.

Scantel president Francisco Villapando said additional funds were needed to replace communication equipments already reaching obsolescence or needing modifications.

Scantel was willing to shoulder most of the cost, but the city should share the burden, said Villapando.

Jaraula disagreed, saying City Hall would not take part in the contractor's "fault and stupidity."

Jaraula also blamed Scantel for its failure to "put in place the fundamentals of the project, causing massive delays that deprived "beneficiaries of adequate and efficient telephone system."

In its 2006 annual report, the Commission on Audit (COA) pointed out that the project has "incurred substantial delay because of the non-completion of technical requirements needed in the implementation of the project."

Scantel admitted delays have marred the project, but blamed the failure largely to a former company official who Villapando had mismanaged the project. The official has left Scantel, but Villapando did not reveal the reason.

Jaraula said Scantel's problems are its own doing, and that City Hall was only interested at seeing the project finished as agreed in the contract.

Earlier, Emano said factors in the delays in completion of the project include the failure by Scantel to take into consideration the difficulty of installing phone lines over hinterland barangays.
